Nutan has helped me twice to date with my real estate needs. First in 2015, she helped me find an unusual place: a work live space on a commercial street with a reno potential to eventually launch my business on the main floor and live with my family upstairs. Clearly not a mainstream search. Recently, Nutan helped me find a good residential tenant for my work live space as my life is taking me elsewhere. That residential element, one more time, was not a mainstream residential offering either: it was designed with high design expectations, led by architects, and implemented with quality materials to provide a long term home for my family. Not your typical rental opportunity on a busy commercial street. It called for a tenant profile with good alignment with my values. Both of my unusual property cycles, to buy a few years ago and to rent recently, required a professional and experienced approach, a solid understanding of clients needs and market knowledge, strong communication back and forth to progress on the road map, and a smooth execution. Nutan had it all. I was particularly grateful for the quality of that partnership. She got my needs every time and was a trusty party to move me forward: very responsive, educating me and keeping me in the know on relevant matters, respecting my time in numerous ways by introducing me only to relevant properties at the time of buying or working with the right team when time to feature my property. She surrounds herself with quality people to work with: top notch photographer/video person, mortgage broker, trade references, etc... and even a top notch cleaning crew! Her interactions with other agents on both transactions were responsive and productive. Nutan got us the results we were after with a very smooth and pleasant process. A warm Merci Nutan!

HEARTY AUTUMN RECIPES THE COLDER MONTHS ARE PERFECT FOR TESTING OUT COZY NEW RECIPES IN THE KITCHEN MADE WITH WHOLESOME, NUTRITIOUS AND HEARTY INGREDIENTS. IT’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO MAKE STEWS AND SOUPS, BUT IF YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS, YOU CAN ALWAYS PUT A NEW SPIN ON CLASSIC FAVOURITES. This soup recipe by Renée Kohlman from the Sweetsugarbean food blog is a fun twist on the traditional mushroom and barley, with quinoa swapped in for the barley and added bacon for a little depth of flavour. Bursting with antioxidants and other important nutrients, not to mention being low in calories, mushrooms are great to use in the winter as they are the only vegetable that contains vitamin D. We’ve used sliced cremini mushrooms here, but feel free to use whatever mushrooms you like.

8

• 2 tbsp butter • 1 large yellow onion, chopped • 1 large carrot, chopped • 1 celery stalk, chopped • 200 g sliced cremini mushrooms • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tsp dried thyme • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp pepper • 1/4 cup sherry • 4 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth • 1 can (19 oz/540 mL) diced tomatoes • 1/2 cup quinoa, rinsed • 2 cups chopped kale, tough centre stems removed • 5 slices cooked bacon, chopped • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce or tamari

DIRECTIONS STEP ONE: Melt butter in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrot and celery. Cook for a few minutes then stir in mushrooms. Sauté for 3 minutes, then stir in garlic. Cook for another minute or two, until the vegetables are tender, and mushrooms have released their juices. STEP T WO: Stir in sherry and cook until vegetables have absorbed the liquid, about 2 minutes. Stir in broth, diced tomatoes and quinoa. Cover, bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to low and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until quinoa is cooked through. STEP THREE: Stir in kale, bacon and soy sauce. Simmer until kale is softened, about 5 to 7 minutes. If you find it too thick, thin with a bit more broth or water. Season to taste with more salt and pepper, if desired. ◆ newscanada.com

BY THE

RULES

By Designer Amanda Shields | Photography by Kiely Ramos

AS A DESIGNER, I’M OFTEN ASKED, “HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IN A ROOM?” WELL, A HOME CAN “WORK” (OR FALL FLAT, FOR THAT MATTER!) DUE TO A NUMBER OF FACTORS. WITH THAT SAID, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT ALL GREAT SPACES HAVE IN COMMON. HERE ARE MY TOP THREE RULES FOR ROOMS THAT “WORK.” ALWAYS PRIORITIZE FUNCTION Coming from a designer, this may sound counter-intuitive, but if a piece has no practical purpose in your life, then it’s just clutter. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a time and place for beautiful objects and in some cases, their express purpose is adornment, but for anything other than art and accessories, consider its functional value first. Ask yourself: Does it work? Does it fit the space? Does it meet a need? Then, layer in aesthetic value and how that this particular item will contribute to the intended look and feel of the room.

MEASURE BEFORE YOU BUY You’re ready to hit the furniture showrooms. Maybe your renovation is finally finished, or your home has been begging for a redesign. Either way, this day has been a long time coming. But before you rush out with your credit card in hand, don’t forget your measuring tape.

12

HERE ARE SOME STANDARD MEASUREMENTS TO KEEP IN YOUR BACK POCKET: • Seating usually sits 18 inches up off the floor. Factor this into your ideal height fort coffee tables and side tables. • The coffee table should be about 2/3 the width of the sofa. • The distance between seats (like a sofa and armchairs) should be between three and 10 feet. • Leave 12 to 24 inches between an area rug and the wall, depending on the room size. • Artwork should sit 56 inches up from the floor (standard eye-level), or six to 12 inches from the top of a sofa, console table or fireplace mantel. • The dining table should allocate at least 24 inches per diner, but ideally 30 inches.

This brings me to another common measurement mistake: guesstimating furniture size. Remember that your home is very different from the furniture showroom, and the same piece of furniture will look completely different once you bring it home – that is, if it fits through your door. Avoid disappointment by measuring all doorways and hallways, and the area where the piece is intended to “live,” making

note of ceiling height, windows and any other large-scale furnishings or focal points that may affect its positioning. Ensure you also consider traffic patterns and “breathing room” around your furniture.

GIVE YOUR FURNITURE SPACE A fabulous room isn’t just about the furniture in it. The air around your furniture is equally important, both in terms of aesthetics and function. “Negative space” refers to the empty areas in your home. In a designed room, strategic areas are intentionally left empty for a couple of key reasons. From a functional perspective, the area around your furniture allows you to use it with comfort and manoeuvre around it with ease. Negative space also gives your furnishings the required “breathing room” to stand out in the space without competing

focal points. Finally, they give your eye a break. To refresh our homes In the new year ahead some people will lean on the help of a professional designer like myself. Others take the do-ityourself approach. Regardless always keep in mind some decorating rules are there to be followed for good reason and will really help you create the perfect stylish and functional place to call home. ◆

HOME DÉCOR

A BLANK Canvas By Jason Stacey | Photography by Stephani Buchman

An unused space in any home offers an abundance of possibilities. Mention an unused room to an Interior Designer and their eyes light up! It’s the blank canvas that all designers dream about. When Claire Jefford was approached by the homeowners of this older home in a beautiful mature neighbourhood in Aldershot, she was tasked with helping the client bring their vision to life for an inviting living space in an unused area of the home.

16

THE CLIENTS SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH THIS AREA,” REMARKED CLAIRE. “AFTER REVIEWING THE SPACE WITH MY TEAM, IT WAS HARD NOT TO GET EXCITED. WE GOT TO WORK IMMEDIATELY. Claire Jefford’s interior design process always starts with an indepth conversation at their initial consultation meeting with the clients, to help the team understand the client’s lifestyle and precisely assess how they need a space to function for their needs.

“In that initial meeting, we discussed many topics including design styles and preferences for colours,” added Claire. “The clients made it very clear what they were looking for which was fantastic. Understanding the clients wants and needs is crucial to any successful renovation.”

From that meeting, the team including lead designer Karen Dunn, designed two layout options which were presented via 3D renderings so that the client could completely visualise their new space. In order to allow for enough room for everything on their wish list, they all agreed it necessary to tear down a wall to achieve an open floor plan between the kitchen and the new Great Room.

“In discussing the needs and wants for our clients, we thoughtfully designed an entertaining area that the entire family could enjoy. It was important for us to accentuate the great architectural features in this room, such as the tall, slanted ceilings and abundant windows that provided a glorious view to the lush gardens in their backyard.” Because the space was being opened up from the kitchen, see through acrylic panels were used as opposed to railings that can often look busy and create a visual distraction. This seamless design element is a great way to keep the eye moving and was enthusiastically welcomed by the clients. ▹

FOR THE COLOUR PALETTE, CLAIRE ADMITS SHE LOVES BEING INSPIRED BY FABRICS. “Typically, I use one or two swatches that become the ‘jumping off point’ for the entire design,” said Claire. “From there we look at other decorative elements to support the design palette, mixing in some warm tones as well, which you see reflected here in the coffee table and walnut shelf on the media unit. Then we add in more layers such as the area rugs and accent cushions. The wall colour is ‘Gray Owl’ by Benjamin Moore.”

GREAT ROOM The main focus of this project was the addition of the custom media wall unit and new fireplace that was designed using soft white shiplap and a small marble herringbone tile. There was an emphasis on creating a coastal colour palette with nautical hints to complement the new shiplap fireplace. Beautiful dark blue fabrics were used in the conversational seating area, as well as in the other blue tones incorporated into the children’s new crafting area.

CR AFTING AREA The space allowed for the addition of a kid’s crafting area in the corner by the large windows. This area used to house an old hot tub which the clients never used. With the additional sunlight that pours into this room from the skylights above, it was the perfect spot to create a cozy little nook. “The custom bench seat that sits perfectly within the bay window area not only looks great, but the drawers underneath for storage of colouring books, pencils, games and puzzles means that it’s super functional as well,” added Claire. Claire Jefford’s industrious and spirited personality brings something special to each project she works on. Along with her team, their job is most meaningful when client’s trust them to create stunning and functioning spaces for gathering and

making memories. From the colours to the fabrics, the clients were thrilled with the result. Having a space with multiple functions that the whole family can use has made this once unused space into the most popular spot in their home. ◆

Whether she’s guiding a homeowner through colour, fabric or furniture selections, presenting a fully custom 3D design plan, or coaching another interior design professional on how to bring a successful business to life, Claire is untiring in everything she does. Her designs are stunning, tailored and timeless, and her energy is ridiculously contagious. Claire’s work has been featured in Lux Lifestyle Magazine, and Maria Killam’s White e-book and blog. She’s a prominent keynote speaker, and she’s also co-authored an interior design business book. Simply put, Claire Jefford walks the walk. ClaireJefford.com
