FOUR
BATHROOM BLUNDERS A N D H O W T O AV O I D T H E M By Jessica Cinnamon Design
Y
our bathroom is your refuge, your sanctuary. Yes, there are obvious reasons for this, but biological necessities aside, your bathroom is also your haven to rest, relax and rejuvenate; to engage is some much-needed self-care; to pamper yourself and indulge, because you deserve it. It’s no surprise that we have high expectations for this unique room in our home, and rightfully so. Unfortunately, there are lots of potential pitfalls lurking behind the walls of this complicated and costly renovation. These are four common bathroom renovation mistakes I come across time and time again, and how to avoid them. Bathroom Blunder #1: Doing It Yourself Trust me, you don’t want to do it yourself. A bathroom renovation has a lot of moving parts, from plumbing and electrical, to a million and one design choices. Now, add a delicate schedule or events that need to happen on time. And last but certainly not least comes the cost. You’ll soon learn that a bathroom renovation is expensive, and even more so when you’ve made critical errors that you’ll have to re-do, repair and pay for – again. Unless you’re a professional bathroom designer or renovator, leave this job to the pros. Do your research before hiring your team, seek customer reviews and referrals, and check out their work.
Bathroom Blunder #2: Cutting Corners Okay, we all want to save money where possible, especially given the rising cost of… everything. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. Echoing the point above, don’t try to save money by doing the work yourself. However, while you shouldn’t try to save on the plumber, you can save by keeping your existing plumbing layout intact. If budgetefficiency is one of your goals, set this priority early on in the renovation process and consult your team of pros on cost-effective alternatives that won’t compromise your design, such as tile and countertops, which occupy and huge area and can eat up a good chunk of the budget. Stick to your budget and be realistic about what’s possible with what you have to work with. And trust me, always choose quality over quantity.
Bathroom Blunder #3: Underestimating time-line A bathroom project will take time, so be realistic in how long the work will take, and how big of an inconvenience it will be. If you only have one bathroom, then some extra planning will be required, likely involving alternate accommodations while the work is being done. During your contractor consultations, get a scope of work outlining all the details, and how long it will all take. Keep track of renovation milestones, which are your opportunity to see what’s been completed to date, and correct any issues before moving onto the next step in the process. ▹

HOME DECOR
Bathroom Blunder #4: Overestimating your role Yes, it is your home, but remember that it is their job. By “they,” I’m referring to the team of professionals that you hired. You’ve done your due diligence, by researching renovators. If you’re working with a professional designer, then you’ll enjoy the
dual benefit of having access to their design expertise and experience, as well as their roster of tried-and-true service providers, suppliers and retailers, to ensure top quality is delivered on time and on budget. So, step back and let them do what they do best. Don’t let these mistakes, or any others, drown out your bathroom renovation dreams. For many, a bathroom renovation is a long time coming, and a lot has to come together to make that vision materialize. But with a little planning, patience and professional help, you can ensure your hardsaved money is spent wisely, and that your reno goals culminate into bathroom bliss. ◆

TRUE BLUE
By Bren Petrunick | Photography by Simply White Interiors
Try to hate blue, I dare you! Blue is a universally loved colour, adapting to a wide range of styles, moods and hues with ease. This makes it a go-to for many designers – myself included. But beyond its sheer versatility, many of us are drawn to blue for the positive emotions it stirs. The beauty of blue is in the eye of the beholder, and its various shades are open to interpretation. This begs the question, which blue is the right blue, where should you use it, and how?

THE MANY MOODS OF BLUE Blue evokes a range of different emotions, when we seem to need them most – inspiration, introspection, serenity, stability, relaxation, romance, drama and more. That makes it a great colour family for every room in the home. But there are literally thousands of different blues to choose from, and they’re not all interchangeable. If you’re lost in swatches of Sky, Ocean, Periwinkle, and Midnight, seek inspiration in something beautiful – art, culture, travel, nature, whatever moves you. ▹

IF BLUE IS THE DOMINANT COLOUR IN THE ROOM, PLAN TO FEATURE IT ON ABOUT 60 PER CENT OF SURFACES...
THE RIGHT BLUE
18
A quick visit to your local point store will reveal thousands of different blues – light and dark, muted and vibrant, warm and cool. That’s right, folks! Blue is often mistaken as a cool colour, when this isn’t always the case. Warm blues have a purple bias, and appear to come forward in a room, while cool blues have green undertones and tend to recede. Colour temperature will influence your broader colour palette, whether blue is the dominant hue, a secondary colour or an accent. When choosing your colour palette, your selections should all be the same temperature. Crossing the line will throw your colour scheme – and the room – out of balance.
PUTTING BLUE TO USE Let’s stay on the topic of “balance” for a moment. Balance is incredibly important in interior design. It’s what makes a room light feel just right, without being able to put your finger on it. Balance refers to the distribution of something in a room – colour, size, shape, materials, light, white space, with the goal being balance in everything. This ensures no single element overpowers the others, creating harmony. When it comes to the use of colour refer to the 60-30-10 rule to achieve a balanced colour scheme. If blue is the dominant colour in the room, plan to feature it on about 60 per cent of surfaces – typically background elements, such as the walls and an area rug. The remaining scheme is made up of a secondary colour, which occupies about 30 per cent of surfaces, like furnishings and a feature wall. Last but not least, the accent colour occupies about 10 per cent of your space, typically a small but punchy “pop” to attract the eye, such as accessories, art and the like.
When choosing your palette, the colours should complement one another, and be sure to incorporate some contrast. Thankfully, blue “plays nice” with other hues, from other versions of itself, to red, orange, green, yellow and, of course, white. Blue is a common colour in interiors, so go against the status quo and use it in unexpected ways. Look for opportunities to surprise and design with this classic colour. Be bold in a small space, like a powder room or home office, with a vibrant jewel-tone or a courageous wallpaper choice. Jazz up a traditional space with a blue ceiling and trim work. Look for places to add a pop of blue, to enhance the mood and create a vibe. ◆
