EARTH HOUR IN RONCY
8
• COMMUNITY CAPTURED
TEN YEARS AGO, WWF initiated Earth Hour. It’s a symbolic time held worldwide to encourage the global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world. For one hour on one evening in the month of March, we are all to turn off our lights and reduce our power draw, opting for candlelight instead.
02
04
In December of 2015, Paris hosted the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP 21 in which, 196 representing countries or territorial parties agreed on a global commitment to reducing the effects of climate change. This agreement is intended to become law. This past January, City Councillors Gord Perks & Sarah Doucette (representing Parkdale - High Park) held a “think tank” to get residents to weigh in on how they thought, we could work towards combating climate change. It was a packed house. I was there. Supporting Earth Hour is one of my passions. In 2013 WWF Canada identified me as an Earth Hour Team Captain and I’ve been running with that moniker ever since. My name is Karyn Klaire Koski and my family has lived in Roncesvalles Village for 22 years.
03
Since 2010, I with other RoncyWorks members – and with the support of the BIA, have encouraged groups of Earth Hour Supporters to walk along Roncesvalles Avenue, in solidarity to represent our community’s voice. There are no protests. It’s just an ever increasing number of friends, families and neighbours, who walk together from the top to the bottom of “Roncy” holding lanterns or candles in jars, in the spirit of the occasion. Along the kilometre and a half stretch we pass candlelit restaurants, bistros and bars who signal their participation by turning off or dimming their lights.

R
IS FOR RACCOON ...OR IS IT RABIES?
The threat of Rabies in Ontario. IN DECEMBER 2015, in the back of an animal control van, two dogs got into an altercation with a sick raccoon. This raccoon tested positive for Rabies and was the first reported raccoon Rabies case in a decade in southern Ontario. Since this incident, there have been more than 60 cases of raccoon Rabies, with many more cases expected to be discovered. This startling revelation brings to light the risk for our pets to be exposed to this deadly disease as well as the importance of their protection through Rabies vaccination.
WHAT IS RABIES? Rabies is a virus that is typically transmitted by a bite from a rabid animal. The virus lives in the saliva of the affected mammal and is transferred to the unsuspecting host’s tissues through the bite wound. Once a dog (or person) has been infected, the virus travels from the bite wound to the peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and finally the brain. Essentially, it attacks the central nervous system.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF RABIES? Sudden changes in behavior (including aggression) as well as progressive paralysis are the most reliable signs of Rabies infection, however a pet that is infected may also exhibit: exaggerated reactions to sound, hypersalivation, ataxia (an unsteady gait), difficulty swallowing, and convulsions. It is important to note that the appearance of these clinical signs can take anywhere from weeks to months to develop in an affected animal. Unfortunately, once clinical signs of infection have developed, Rabies is fatal.
HOW MAY MY PET BE EXPOSED? Species that most commonly transmit Rabies are raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes. These animals, if rabid, may exhibit signs such as losing their fear of humans or wandering around during the daytime (if they are normally nocturnal). Activities like hiking, camping, or travelling to the cottage may expose pets and humans to an increased risk for contact with rabid animals. Unfortunately, with our encroachment into their natural habitats, these animals may also walk into our own backyards.
WHAT DO I DO IF MY PET IS EXPOSED TO A RABID ANIMAL? If you know or suspect your pet has been in contact with rabid wildlife, please seek veterinary care immediately. There are regulations, including re-vaccination and quarantine, for pets that may have been exposed to Rabies which should be discussed with your veterinarian.
HOW DO I BEST PROTECT MY PET FROM RABIES? Rabies vaccination, which is required by law, is the best protection for your pet. Not only does it significantly diminish the pet’s risk for Rabies infection, but it also helps prevent spread of the disease. Your pet’s Rabies vaccination should remain up-to-date as any delay in vaccinating or missing a vaccine could put your beloved companion at risk for a severe, untreatable disease. In conclusion, Rabies is a very serious and fatal disease. The risk for exposure is real and, regrettably, rising in Ontario. Please take all of the proper precautions in keeping your dog and cat family members safe.

SAY ‘HELLO’ TO
STELLA
The goal of Black Dog Rescue is to rescue and rehome at risk dogs in Ontario, Quebec and Mexico, with a special emphasis placed on black dogs. Historically, black dogs have been mistreated and overlooked, for superstitious and aesthetic reasons alike. It’s notoriously difficult to take clear, expressive photos of black dogs, and many people are still instinctually afraid of black dogs. Stella sadly falls right into this category.
She is an energetic and smart cuddle monster, who has been in our adoption program for nearly six months! This is far too long for a sweet girl like Stella who deserves a family of her own.

LET’S PLANT TREES Submitted by: KARYN KLAIRE KOSKI by RoncyWorks

Although planting trees won’t stop Climate Change, trees will help to counteract carbon emissions through carbon absorption. Trees serve as the lungs of the planet and of our cities. The whole of Roncesvalles Village has seen an increase in the planting of City trees along our streets and it is hoped that land owners will continue planting trees on their properties. By re-imagining yard spaces as mini forests with trees and native shrubs, we can increase the value of our homes, outdoor pleasures and help contribute to the health of our community. www.roncyworks.wordpress.com 01: Planting bulbs on Roncy. 02: Gearing up for gardening. 03: Forested. 04: Ready for spring.

AT HUGH’S ROOM
A informative discussion of Canada’s refugee system in the context of the unique needs of the Parkdale community was held on Monday April 4th by the Parkdale Intercultural Association (PIA) and Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS). It was a unique opportunity for the representatives from the legal, political, policy and service communities to bring Parkdale specific issues to the forefront. The panelists included.
