BOOK REVIEW
APRIL'S BOOK SUGGESTION
co-author and past editor of Simon & Schuster, Greer Hendricks. It goes without saying that The Wife Between Us is a page turner, but it’s more than that. It keeps us on the edge of our seats as the plot thickens and we realize that what we assumed to be true, is shrouded in mystery.

umour has it that The Wife Between Us, will make it to the big screen. It’s no wonder. It has all the qualities of a great psychological thriller: suspense, mystery, drama and romance all in one package. It is the seventh novel by best-selling author Sarah Pekkanen and the first by her
CAPTURINGBETTERPH TOS
Written in the voices of two characters (there’s more to this but I can’t give it away), the book scatters hints throughout, but manages to keep all of its secrets to the end. It had me fooled with its many twists and turns, plots and sub-plots with culprits I hadn’t imagined. Authors Pekkanen and Hendricks have the winning formula for a best seller. If you liked Gone Girl, you’ll like The Wife Between Us.

COMPOSING WITH THIRDS
or centuries visual artists have been aware of the “Rule of Thirds” (which is more of a guideline). An image is divided both horizontally and vertically into thirds (1). Important elements in the picture, such as the horizon or vertical structures, are optimally located on these lines. When taking a photo, it is a natural tendency for the subject to be placed in the middle of the frame, but at the time of editing or while actually taking the photo, the photographer may compose with thirds to enhance the final result. Horizons are the easiest to place along either the upper or lower horizontal third (images 2,3,4). In addition, dominant vertical structures (the tree in 4, the lighthouse in 5) can also be placed along either the right or left vertical third.

DO YOU HAVE THAT WORK PLAY BALANCE? I’ve never worked for anybody, I’ve always worked for me. Today, if my kids are sick, I’m right there. I may have 5 pages to write, but instead I finished the dishes because my wife was up all night with the sick kids. So, you balance everything. It’s about prioritizing.
TELL OUR READERS WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HEALTH RECENTLY. I almost died a year ago. They found out I had colon cancer.
HOW DID THE CANCER DIAGNOSIS CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Article by: Sue London
ANSON WILLIAMS I had the honour of interviewing Anson Williams, also known to millions as Potsie Weber, from the hit TV series, Happy Days. I found Anson to be a personable, outgoing humanitarian. He truly inspired me.
YOU PLAYED POTSIE ON HAPPY DAYS, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY? It’s not a favourite memory, because it wasn’t just playing a character. I was only 23 years old at the time. Now, it’s 40 years later and the cast has contributed to entertainment and social issues. All that was stimulated by Garry Marshall. He inspired all of us to not get in the way of ourselves and to appreciate being on this major movie lot. The show was great, playing Potsie was great, all that was fun, but it actually became a minor part of the experience.
YOU GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU WERE TRULY A FAMILY. DID IT FEEL LIKE YOU WERE? Yeah and also at the beginning, all of us took the opportunity and educated ourselves. I think that’s why we’re still effective in the 10

business because we learned to wear many hats, we saw many other areas that we were interested in and we perused that. We didn’t get lost in the icing of fame.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN? I have five daughters. I have one that is married, two grandsons, four daughters still at home and that’s my focus in life. That’s a lot of work right there. My day is pretty much like everyone else’s as a dad, being a responsible parent.
I IMAGINE YOU’VE GOT A PRETTY BUSY LIFE STYLE. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU? I have been directing since 1985. I have directed and produced over 300 shows. If I haven’t been creating, I’ve brought in people to create problem solving products, within the last 20 years.
Today I am very lucky, cancer free and healthier than I’ve been in 30 years. However, it’s a determination, a mindset and living for more than yourself. I understand the importance of priorities and that was a wakeup call. We need to go back to the garden and go back to the beginning. Find yourself and find who you are. My family was almost poor, like lower level, we had a very small home with one bathroom. Deep down I knew I was something more, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Now that I’m older, I found out how important that tree was in our backyard, I never looked at it enough or appreciated it enough. It took me to go on this huge road in order to get back to the basics. I want to forward that to people and inspire them to think “I am okay” or “that’s where I want to go.”
I’M A FIRM BELIEVER THAT EVERYTHING HAPPENS IN OUR LIVES FOR A REASON. CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS ABOUT YOUR LIFE CHANGING CAR ACCIDENT? Many years ago, I was driving outside of Los Angles in the local desert, doing a shoot. It was a very hot and exhausting day. Driving home, I blacked out and the next thing I knew, I was bouncing around in the desert and almost killed myself. I had fallen asleep for like 3 seconds. It was enough to get off the road. I’m so lucky I survived this. I didn’t crash, but it scared me. I called my uncle, Dr. Heimlich, who created the Heimlich Maneuver, he’s actually my second cousin, but I’ve called him my uncle since I was born. I told him my situation and he explained how the body helps the body’s sensory connection and all that, basically natural ways to heal. He was a genius. He explained to me that when I’m having a hard day, I should keep cut up lemons with me. If I start feeling exhausted, to bite into it hard and he explained how the citric acid of the lemon would hit the nerve on top of your tongue. The automatic reflex reaction of the body is adrenaline and then you would feel alert. No caffeine or anything. Just the body working the body. It’s no different than going to the doctor and he has his little rubber mallet and he checks your reflexes. Happy Days Cast
CAN WE GET THESE DROPS IN CANADA? If people go to AlertDrops.com, they can learn all about the product. It’s all natural, so nothing will hurt you. It’s very old science. We just found a way to make it civilized and educate people on how the body can help the body. There’s nothing in your system and nothing to screw up your sleep pattern. You can order them on our website and on Amazon, but there are problems with the shipping. If you go onto AlertDrops.com and write to the info e-mail, which is me, we can figure it out and get it to you.
WHO IS BUYING ALERT DROPS? People have found that construction sites in America have banned energy drinks and similar products and now they are buying alert drops. EMT’s, doctors, nurses and anybody that needs to be alert in their jobs are buying it. Kids are using it in classrooms before tests. Anybody that needs to be alert and clear, it’s great for. It suits your own body and makes it alert. No stimulants, no caffeine, nothing.
WHAT TIME DO YOU FIGURE PEOPLE SHOULD GO TO SLEEP AND HOW MUCH SLEEP SHOULD THEY GET? I don’t know what time to go to bed, but you need 8 hours. Early to bed, early to rise. The other thing is to not eat past 6pm. Get a good breakfast, smaller lunch, tiny dinner, so your body doesn’t have to work.
WHEN YOU SUCK ON THE LEMON, HOW LONG DOES IT WORK FOR YOU? It lasts 30 min to an hour. Everyone is different because everyone’s body is different. If it only lasts 10 min, take another hit, there’s nothing to hurt you. So, I did that for years and I never had the problem again. Then during those years, I had gone into the product business. I loved finding a problem and I loved creating a solution. So, I started researching drowsy driving. In 2012, the National Sleep Foundation did a study and at the time, there were 168 million drowsy drivers a year. Today it’s worse. One out of five people admitted to falling asleep. There are more accidents and deaths from this, than from medicated driving and drunk driving combined. If you lose 2 hours of sleep, it equals 3 beers driving.
THAT’S VERY SCARY. WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT? I called Dr. Heimlich and I said “because of this information you gave me years ago, I have an idea. What do you think?” I said, “what if we get the right amount of citric acid, with the right amount of sour lemon, a little water and a little preserve for shelf life. What if we just put it in a spray gel? What if we just spray the middle of your tongue?” He said, “Yes! Anson! That would be twice as effective as biting into the lemon. You’ll save more lives than the Heimlich Maneuver. Absolutely do it.” Then we did. It’s called Alert Drops.
Anson with Dr. Henry Heimlich
CAN YOU SHARE ANY LAST WORDS OF WISDOM? Be everything in life, be in life, don’t be of something and don’t hide behind anything. Take the time to find out who you are. Don’t get brainwashed in constant media. You know yourself best. Find yourself, take some quiet time and learn to meditate. Find who you are, you will find your own direction, you will find yourself and you will find your place. You don’t need all this icing, you need to find the cake. That’s the centre of who you are and what you are about. Dr. Heimlich always said, “we’re all going to die, all of us. The purpose of your living is to leave something behind that doesn’t die.” That’s what he did; he left behind saving lives. Leave behind something more, leave behind something purposeful and make your life meaningful. Make this place just a little better because you were here and let it continue on, to the hearts and minds of everybody you touch. COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA •

BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS 3 DRILLS TO GET THE GOLF BODY MOVING
S
pring is here and it’s time to trade snow shovels for golf clubs. Are you prepared? You may have improved your technique by beating balls at an indoor driving range, mastering a simulator or perhaps graduating from YouTube tutorials to one-on-one lessons with a pro, but what have you done to improve the most important tool in your proverbial golf bag? I’m talking about your body.
Like any athlete, golfers need to train to win. Many TV commentators warn that strength training ruins one’s golf swing, but I’m here to tell you they’re just plain wrong. Taking a few hours out of your week to follow a professionally designed strength training program can only improve your game. As someone with nearly 20 combined years as a strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist, I hope you’ll review the following introduction to golf fitness and make it a part of your game. THREE PHASES OF GOLF FITNESS MOVEMENT Pain and injury are the main reasons people prematurely give up their favourite sport, so before strength training, it’s essential to improve your joint health. Correcting existing injuries and imbalances prevents worsened and new problems, which means more time on the course. STRENGTH Now that you have your foundation, it’s time to build strong muscles through weight-training. This won’t just improve your golf game, but will let you better perform in all areas of your life. POWER Phase three is converting your newly achieved strength into power for greater clubhead speed. This is achieved by training the body to become fast and explosive. MOVEMENT DRILLS I always say “the on-season is for going long and the off-season is for getting strong,” but the truth is, it’s never too late to start a training regime and get in better shape. Getting started is easy, you just have to commit to Phase One and get your body moving. All of my clients perform the following three drills over their training career. They will have you feeling strong and confident when standing over the ball this season.
1. CAT/CAMEL SEGMENTATION You’re only as healthy as your spine. Start in a quadruped position with the 01 shoulders stacked directly above the wrists and the hips above the knees. Move into a dome position (Cat pose) with the head and hips tucked under the torso. From here, the goal is to finish in an extended 02 position (Camel or Cow pose) but doing so segmentally. Starting from the tailbone and moving slow, travel up the spine vertebrae by vertebrae until reaching the neck. The goal is for the spine to move like a wave. Reverse back down the spine returning to cat pose. This is one repetition. Repeat for a total of five repetitions. 2. SIDE LYING WINDMILL This is a great beginner drill to teach the upper and lower body to work together, yet simultaneously independently of each other. Start by lying on your 01 02 right side in a straight line from head to toe. Place a foam roller in front of you, parallel to 03 04 your body. Flex the left hip bringing the thigh to 90 degrees and resting the knee, shin and foot on the roller. Extend 05 both arms out in front on you with palms together. From here, pin the roller down by pushing the lower left leg down into it and reach forward with the top hand. Next, while trying to keep the fingers on the ground, move the arm up and over the head in an arc. Exhale at the top of the arc and continue traveling behind your body, turning the head to look at your hand the entire way. Focus on pulling the left shoulder blade towards the spine/floor and keeping the arm straight throughout the arc. It’s more important for the arm to maintain its rigidness than it is for the fingers to stay in contact with the ground. As you become more mobile, the fingers will stay connected. Once you have created a straight line from hand to hand, return the left arm to the starting position by bringing it across the body. Perform 5 rotations and repeat on the left side. 3. SINGLE LEG GLUTE BRIDGE The glutes are king when it comes to your swing. They’re responsible for generating power as well as stabilizing the pelvis. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet 01 flat on the floor. Tuck the chin and pull the rib cage down towards your belt buckle. This will help flatten the lower back to the ground. From here push the knees forward in front 02 of the toes as this will naturally raise your hips off the ground. Squeeze the glutes and push your hips up further, stopping when you’ve created a straight line from knees to 03 shoulders. Without shifting the hips, extend the right leg while flexing the foot toward the body until both thighs are parallel. Hold for 10-30 seconds and repeat on the other leg. Perform 3 sets on each leg. I hope phase one helps you get your golf season off to a great start. Next time, I’ll talk in depth about building strength on this foundation. HIGH SCHOOL JURIED ART SHOW AT RODMAN HALL Congratulations to the following students for their acceptance into the Rodman Hall Juried Art Exhibition: Jayce Jung, Ireland Vanderkooy, Taylor Goertz, Lauren Alguire, Aidan Zeglinsk, Jazmin Wolff, Catherine Pan and Eden Rikkerink. Opening reception was on Thursday, March 29th.
AUTHOR VISIT Kristen Ciccarelli visited Eden High School’s library Book Club, on Wednesday, March 7th. Kristen is the author of the newest and hottest young adult fiction book “The Last Namsara,” published by Harper Collins. This book has been picked as a staff favourite at Chapters. Kristen graduated from Eden and grew up in the Niagara Peninsula on her grandfather’s grape farm, where she spent her childhood running wild with her cousins and dreaming of dragons. She was thrilled with the wonderful response and questions from the students at Eden High School. She stated it was such a joy to walk the halls of Eden once more and see both old and new faces, plus answer the many students questions.
@EDENHIGHARTS The Arts Department has begun an Artist Spotlight feature, where students from 3 disciplines (Visual Arts, Drama and Music) are highlighted regularly to recognize their efforts and creativity. Our first inductees are Amy Hopman for music, Catharine Pan for visual arts and Aidyn Kasper for drama. You can find these, as well as other happenings, in our classes and department through our Instagram @edenhigharts. Upon returning from March break, 5 Arts classes (125+ students) gathered over the period of 1 week to launch a huge collaborative project. In the interest of innovating arts education and invigorating creative thought processes, students were given a theme or concept and had to interpret the theme to create something that incorporates the skills of the students in their groups.
CARDBOARD BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS On March 8th, Gabe Masaluk, Tyler Bush, Bennet Warkentine and Capt Ben Busca took gold in the Provincial Cardboard Boat Championships in Waterloo. They had a top weight score of 762 lbs and scored a personal best time of 15.2 seconds.
EDEN PARTICIPATES IN SCIENCE DAY AT BROCK On February 23rd, a group of 23 Grade 12 science students spent a day at Brock University for “Science Day at Brock.” The day included a presentation from Co-op, Career and Experiential Education at Brock University about hands-on opportunities for students in the Sciences. We were also excited to hear from an Eden grad, who is in her final year of the Med Plus program, talk about her experiences there. Students sat in a University Chemistry lecture, participated in either a chemistry lab activity synthesizing alum or a biochemistry lab, involving DNA extraction and fingerprinting of their own DNA. The day concluded with a pizza lunch and a brief campus tour. Students loved their stimulating educational experience and were thrilled to “do science” in university labs.

GIRLS HOCKEY FIRST TEAM The girls had a fantastic season and went an unbelievable 14-3-1 capturing the zone 4 championship by defeating Grimsby in the NRHSAA final and then defeating Holy Cross in the zone 4 final, securing a berth to SOSSA. Unfortunately, we lost at SOSSA and did not advance to OFSAA. Shout out to the athletes that are graduating; Chiara Aceti, Brooke Switzer, Val Langbroek, Sheilagh Troup, Mackenzie Blake and Jenna Vanderhoeven.
JUST KEEP SWIMMING Eden’s swim team swam away with three bronze medals at the OFSAA swim competition in Windsor this past month. Reese Doucett won two bronze medals for her 50m and 100m freestyle for the para category. In addition, Brandon Bigger won bronze for the 100m para freestyle in a dramatic finish. Noah Schouten and Grace Coveney also had strong performances in their individual events.

Individual spring sports are also starting up with athletes competing in track and field, rowing and badminton. Collectively these programs are supported by 14 Eden staff and at least 6 committed community volunteers. GRIMSBY
SECONDARY SCHOOL Spring has sprung! Mid-semester brings plenty of learning in the classroom and outside. It’s been an exciting few weeks at Grimsby Secondary School (GSS).
FOCUS ON LITERACY Goal setting, hard work, confidence and motivation are a few of the many methods of educational success. For almost a century, our staff have been ensuring that students receive quality education, as well as go out of their way to make sure their students educational career is both enjoyable and beneficial. The middle of second semester is approaching, which means for Grade 10 students the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is around the corner. Reading, writing and grammar up to the Grade 9 level are the main focus of this Ontario-wide
standardized test. The completion of the OSSLT is a requirement to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Grade 10 students are invited to join Mr. Harshaw at lunch every Monday to ensure understanding of Grade 9 literature and to gain confidence before writing the test on April 10th, 2018. With the success of students, comes the happiness of not only the students themselves, but the teachers who passed down their knowledge to the future generations. FOCUS ON IMPROV The Grimsby Improv team has just returned home with Gold from their Regional Improv tournament! The team was in Guelph from March 21-24, competing against 19 other teams from all over South Western Ontario, in what is known as the TriCity Regional tournament of the Canadian Improv Games. After a round robin competition of all 20 teams where they ended in first place, the team went on to compete in the finals, where the top 5 teams performed again to a sold-out house, ultimately maintaining their 1st place standing and sending them on to the National Tournament to be held in Ottawa April 18-21st. The team would like to give an improv shout out to their friends at Thorold SS and EL Crossley SS, who also made the Top 5! Grimsby is proud to represent TriCity Improv on the National stage! FOCUS ON ROWING Our rowers have been training all year. Early morning workouts, running the halls before anyone arrives and paying attention to what they are eating, to ensure they are ready for regatta time.

As we head into April, we remind families that Spring (Early) Registration is just around the corner. Keep your eyes out for announcements regarding dates and process for Spring Registration – it’s a convenient way to set things up for your student in the upcoming school year. Semester one at BDSS was exceptionally successful for our students. Way to go, Bucs! Our teaching staff, and student support team are so pleased with your efforts and look to work together with students for even greater levels of achievement in semester two.
OFSAA SWIMMING Our athletes in the regular and para swimming events, achieved at unbelievably high levels in Windsor at this year’s OFSAA swim meet. The follow results show not only the dedication of BDSS athletes, but also of their coach, Kathaleen McNeil and of their families who worked so hard to support them, transport them and encourage them at this exciting event. Congratulations to our Para division team, who won the overall championship in their division making them the top para swimmers in Ontario for a second consecutive year. Amazing job, Bucs!
OFSAA WRESTING While it comes as no surprise that our BDSS Bucs wrestlers achieved at a high level this year, making it out of our region and to SOSSA and OFSSA this year, their hard work and dedication should not be overlooked. At the OFSAA meet, both Jess Tillmanns and Samantha Adams won gold, an incredible achievement for such dedicated student athletes. Reet Cahill also had a strong showing, finishing 5th in Ontario in his first year at OFSAA.
TECH SKILLS CHALLENGE These young athletes have been training hard in preparation for another amazing year of rowing success! In February, the Eagle rowers hosted Rudernkrieg 2018, with competitors from far and wide gathering to compete for a day on the ergs. Finally, the day came when they could get on the water. At the end of March, wearing lots of layers and big smiles, the athletes gathered at the Henley to begin this year’s water training. Can’t wait for the first regatta! Go Eagles!

BLESSED TRINITY
C AT H O L I C S E C O N D A R Y S C H O O L THE NEW ERA OF THUNDERSTRUCK When Blessed Trinity teachers, John DiPasquale and John Cino, received the Teacher Learning and Leadership Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Education in 2017, they knew that it was going to be a great school year. The teachers were in charge of the Thunderstruck Link Crew Program, which had focused on integrating Grade 9 students into the high school culture through mentorship from older students. As they entered their sixth year with Thunderstruck, DiPasquale and Cino were determined that this year was going to be the best yet. While still keeping with the traditions of the Thunderstruck program, the teaching staff suggested an increase of Mental Health Promotion in a staff survey. Starting the year off, Niagara Region Public Health trained the 60 Thunderstruck mentors in Health Promotion Training, which taught the grade 11 and 12 students how to broach the topics of mental health and mental illness in the classroom. Twenty of these student leaders formed BTMentality, a committee which promotes Mental Fitness, a concept that just like physical fitness, you must train your brain to perform well. The committee launched their Instagram account, @BTMentality, in which students privately message requests for songs to be played over the PA system on Mondays, dubbed Mental Health Mondays. A Spotify playlist tracks these requests and uploads them under the name #BTPositive. Positive messages are delivered over the PA system and on television screens throughout the school, giving wellbeing strategies, personal mantras, as well as staff and students who are trained in SafeTalk, the suicide prevention program. Spreading positivity, students may send in a picture of their friend and a compliment to be posted for the school to see. This has generated much excitement, as students await to see who will be flattered next! To celebrate the momentous landmark of 200 followers on Instagram, BTMentality held a contest where the 200th follower and the one who recommended the follow would receive a BTMentality shirt. The shirt is a simple design; navy blue with the question “What’s wrong with me?” posed on the front. On the back, the answer is “Absolutely nothing!” This phrase reminds students that everyone experiences struggle in some way. This, however, does not discredit the person, nor make anything ‘wrong’ with them. The t-shirts were introduced at the Tailgate, held in the cafeteria with hot dogs given out for the price of a song request or

personal mantra. Songs from the #BTPositive playlist blasted through the cafeteria, revving up school spirit. Up next for the committee of 20 student leaders is the ‘Roadshow,’ which will open the discussion on Mental Fitness to each of the homeroom classes. Not stopping there, the annual Frames of Mind Night will be held on May 3rd, showcasing the artistic talents of our students in an intimate setting. The subcommittee, headed by teachers John DiPasquale and John Cino, as well as Public Health Nurses Jeannie LaRoque and Haley Barton, has made amazing strides to bettering the mental wellness of students at Blessed Trinity. There is, in fact, nothing wrong with us. Written by: Lauren Kelly
B L E SS E D T R I N I T Y G I R L’ S H O C K E Y I S O N F I R E ! NCAA champions for the third year in a row, SOSSA champions, winner of St. Michael’s McDonald’s tournament, the Blessed Trinity girl’s hockey team is taking the ice by storm. This season, the Blessed Trinity girls have been a “very dynamic hockey team that works hard and capitalizes on their chances,” said coach and head of Physical Education, Richard Vrataric. “The incoming class of grade nine girls has really helped the team with scoring and intensity. Hopefully we can continue to show that.” The team won the NCAA Championship this year with a 10-0 winning streak and over the past three years, they accumulated a total of 75 wins. Most recently, the team won the SOSSA Championship, giving themselves a place in OFSAA for the third year in a row. The team has high hopes for OFSAA and are looking to improve their results from last year, hopefully making it to the quarterfinals. “I really want the girls to enjoy their time at Blessed Trinity and leave with some great memories. They have worked hard to get these results over the past 3 seasons,” says Vrataric. Written by: Ashley Giovannini
BT WRESTLING HAS DONE IT AGAIN! Congratulations goes out to the Blessed Trinity Wrestling Team, who dominated the competition at SOSSA this past March. The team took home the Boys’ Team Championship, the Girls’ Team Championship and the overall Team Championship. Special congratulations goes out to Noah Muraca, who won his third straight gold medal at SOSSA and to Stephen Seljan, who won his second gold SOSSA medal. Noah and Stephen were 2 of the 10 gold medalists from Blessed Trinity. The team continued to impress at the OFSAA Wrestling Championship. Huge improvements and accomplishments were made by all wrestlers who demonstrated strength, perseverance, class and grit. After a hard-fought first day, 4 wrestlers moved on to the quarter and semifinals. Making the top ten this year were Jack Reynolds, Jett Mann, and Stephanie Franciosa. Losing only one match, Rebecca Hendriks made it to the finals and won the bronze medal match! Overall, Blessed Trinity ranked an impressive 22nd out of 195 teams! This was the team’s best year yet. The coaches are looking forward to building the wrestling program again for next year. Congratulations BT wrestlers!
