REFLECTIONS apturing an interesting reflection requires a combination of luck and skill. As a first step, reflection photos require some sort of reflecting surface! As the sample photos illustrate, various surfaces can reflect, including water (1&2), glass (3), sunglasses (4), brass instruments (5) and grand piano tops (6). The composition of reflection photos often poses the interesting challenge of how to apply the “rule of thirds”: Should one show more subject? more reflection? or equal amounts of each? There is no correct answer - artistic choices abound!

On May 12th, The Ireland House Caldwell Room was the scene of a Champagne tea party, in honor of Mother’s Day. Premium teas were served from 3Teas, to accompany the traditional menu and afterwards, champagne-infused desserts were offered. This tea party ended with a tour of the historic house, which presents a history of Burlington from the 1830s to the 1920s.

A crowd gathered early at Spencer Smith Park, on May 26th, to register for Community Living’s 38th Annual Walk n’ Roll. This fundraiser supports those in our community with a developmental disability. Both wheelchairs and walkers tackled the route, through the park to the end of the pier. Burlington mayor Rick Goldring, spoke briefly and honored participant Mike Gremmen for the most money raised. It was a great day had by all.

THE MS SOCIETY PRESENTS ESCAPE & EAT BY LESLIE STYLES
On May 27th, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of HamiltonHalton introduced Burlington to “Escape and Eat,” to raise MS awareness and funds to support their many programs, services and national research. Gorgeous weather prevailed for this action-packed event, which included food trucks, an escape room, music, contests, children’s activities and special guest speakers Mayor Rick Goldring and Ward 2 Councillor Marianne Meed Ward. Partial proceeds from food trucks and escape room try-outs were donated to the Hamilton-Halton chapter.

SALAD This salad is a perfect salad to make when you are having a crowd, I often bring this when I’m invited to a pot luck dinner party. It is healthy, filling and CLEAN!
Ingredients • 1 cup uncooked quinoa* • 1 large handful kale, chopped finely* • 1/4 cup finely chopped chives* • 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro* • 1/4 cup finely chopped dill* • 1/4 cup finely chopped mint*
I chop all the herbs, kale and broccoli together in the food processor. I use about 1 handful of each herb. I use the grater blade for the carrot and the slicing blade for the asparagus.
• 2 carrots, shredded* • 8-12 spears of asparagus, ends removed, shaved* • 1/4 cup gogi berries • Handful of broccoli florets, finely chopped*
Directions STEP 01 / Rinse quinoa in a strainer, put
STEP 03 / To make the dressing:
into a small sauce pan with 1 1/2 cups water and 1 tsp salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes, fluff with a fork and let cool with lid off. When the quinoa is cooled carry on with step 2.
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
STEP 02 / In a large mixing bowl mix together cooled quinoa, kale, chives, cilantro, dill, mint, carrot, asparagus, gogi berries, and broccoli.

Linda Loro, owner of the salon and spa at LaSalle Park Retirement Community, found a way to channel unspeakable pain into helping young people. Last October, she lost her son Marcus, to suicide. On May 6th, Linda’s salon hosted a fundraiser to benefit St. Joseph’s Youth Wellness Centre, which offers clinical care to troubled adolescents and young adults. All money raised from haircuts, raffles, the barbecue and bake sale were donated in memory of Marcus. Many loving and supportive friends and coworkers volunteered for a successful outcome.

On May 13th, the Lace Up for Love walk brought crowds to Spencer Smith Park, in support of Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House. It was a day of fun activity for families to raise funds and help improve the lives of those living with cancer in Halton. The children’s 1 km run started first, with the adult walk following minutes later. Pizza, complimentary snacks and refreshments were provided to participants. 02

As a guest at a comparative Australian wine tasting recently, the observation came up that one of the Cabernet Sauvignon wines from down under had a distinctive aroma resembling eucalyptus. The same notes were then attributed to a Napa Valley Cabernet. I always thought it was the proximity of the trees to the vineyards that allowed this to be true, but eucalyptus in California? - Jeanne
THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jeanne,
We are often asked how certain smells come to be associated with specific grapes or wines. A common one for Cabernet Sauvignon is green pepper, this is our first for eucalyptus. Great question! Actually, eucalyptus trees do grow in the Golden State and have for quite some time. It was during the gold rush that the trees were introduced into California either by Australians, or by others who had been to Australia. The question of whether the proximity of the eucalyptus trees to the vineyards might explain the eucalyptus-like, or medicine-like hints in the nose of a wine is one often debated. There are a couple of schools of thought on this. We had the opportunity to interview Chris Hatcher, Chief winemaker of the iconic Wolf Blass wines on our video podcast and posed a similar question. Here’s what Mr. Hatcher had to say,
“Cabernet from Langhorne Creek in South Australia is famous for having a distinct mint/ eucalyptus character. Winemakers have theorized that the character comes from oil expressed from nearby eucalyptus trees on hot days.” Mr. Hatcher went on to explain that the more modern view believes it is more about the specific clones of Cabernet grown in the region, as wines made in other regions from the same 14

clonal vines have a similar character. The same minty character can also be smelt in some wines from California and Bordeaux. It appears, according to the latest research on the topic there is no evidence to conclusively prove a direct link between proximity of eucalyptus trees and the presence of that flavor in the wine.

ROCCA SISTERS KITE FESTIVAL BY LESLIE STYLES
Hundreds of kites sailed the skies, at Burlington’s Kite Festival, presented by Title Sponsors, The Rocca Sisters Team, on June 3rd. Dragonflies, birds and even a giant Tinkerbell fluttered in the wind above Brant Hills Community Centre. Canadian Olympic swimmer, Colin Russell and the Burlington Teen Tour Band kicked things off at noon, while many participants were still busy constructing their kites. There was tons of action, including a performance by Isabella Hoops and Crash Rhythm, face-painting, balloon animals and much more. The festival coincided with the City of Burlington declaring June as the “Month of Play.”

Youth in Action is excited to announce that our WE Walk for Water event was the most successful fundraising event that YIA has ever had at CKSS. Together, with our incredible CKSS community (that’s YOU) WE raised $7173.50 to bring clean water and sanitation to our WE Village of Namelok, Tanzania. It takes a village to make an event like this happen, and we would like to take a few minutes to show some gratitude for the support that this awesome CKSS community showed for our WE Walk for Water event, our students and for our WE Village in Tanzania. The Leadership course prepares students to offer assistance and leadership to others in their schools and communities. The CK students were tasked with a WOW project. “Cupcakes for Cancer” was run by Mishaal Farooq, Avneet Johal, Taruny Ramamoorthy, Tanisha Batra and Maha Khilji. The class also

ran a candy scavenger hunt and a dodgeball tournament. Funds collected were donated to their chosen charities and a delicious time was had by all. On May 15, CK participated in the annual HDSB Secondary Public Speaking Competition, held at White Oaks S.S. Each school in Halton was invited to send students that are eager to demonstrate their talents for public speaking. Speeches were divided into Junior and Senior categories and students were given creative freedom on topics and delivery strategies. Speeches were judged on: content organization, effectiveness, originality, logic, and evidence; delivery - voice, body language, eye contact, enthusiasm, confidence, and overall impression. You guessed it - CKSS’ own Grade 12 student, Yaser Tasqie won!! CK couldn’t be happier for this awesome young man! On May 10, 15 Business CKSS students traveled to the University of Guelph to participate in the first ever University of Guelph Business Pantheon. Students were put into teams of 4 and competed in five different events. The events included analyzing cases, team building activities, pitching a new product and other challenges that tested their business knowledge. The CKSS Junior team consisting of four Grade 10 Students, Misty Guinn, Shaurya Manocha, Omer Hashmi and Joseph Sadgove came home with two second places finishes and one third place finish. Our varsity cricket team was runner up at the Halton Schools Cricket Championship!! Congratulations players and coaches! A big thank you to Mr. Miranda for taking the team so far. The Mighty Mustang Award is presented to students from any grade who have prevailed through challenges and demonstrated resilience in order to thrive. Sixteen hard-working students achieved this award and were ecstatic about it. This year’s nominees were named earlier in the semester by staff and recipients were thrilled and surprised with an MD sculpture and personal letter. Congratulations to these extraordinary individuals!

Staff are working with students to get them to their chosen destination and are now preparing for our graduation ceremony to be held this year on Wednesday June 27th. This year approximately 50 students from our Milton site and 55 students from our Halton Hills location will potentially graduate. Staff, students and family are always excited to take part in this event each year. This month our alternative students continued with their weekly art sessions by ArtHouse. Students have found this experience very interesting and therapeutic. Our students also visited Sheridan college (Brampton Campus) to explore future educational opportunities and joined our Halton Hills group for an engaging, interactive day hosted by Altitude, a program run by McMaster University staff to explore more experiential learning opportunities and team building activities. The group of students at the Outdoor Education programs: Trailhead and Bronte Creek project are completing their coursework and preparing for their end of year camping trip in Algonquin park in early June. While the school year is coming to a close, it’s prime time for members of the community to be rewarded for their efforts and accomplishments for making MD an even better place to learn and grow. By focusing on wellness and its basis for success of any kind, students and staff have been recognized with a long list of awards in a number of genres. Senior students Ofer Weis and Matthew Wilson won the coveted GOLD in the Video Production category at the Ontario Skills competition, qualifying them for the upcoming Canada Skills competition in
Every year, a Student of Excellence is selected from the graduating class for their outstanding efforts as a student throughout the year and other involvement in the school. MDHS is proud to announce that the Student of Excellence of 2018 is Kira White. Congratulations Kira on your achievement! Students are not the only members of the Mustang community that are recognized. The 44th Annual OSSTF AGM was held recently and Katherine Compton-Morgan and Edel Nuqui, two outstanding MD staff members, received the Inclusive Educator Award for their incredible work at bridging gaps and facilitating connections in multiple aspects of their practice. In addition, Rod Waite, teacher and guidance counselor, also received an INSPIRE award from the HDSB for his work that has motivated others to greater things. From AP to French Immersion to SHSM programs, MD offers an incredible range of experiential opportunities for its students. Some of the Social Justice SHSM team enjoyed leadership training and a zip-lining circuit at the Long Point Eco Adventure facility. This team building experience was the perfect way to plan even greater wellness initiatives and broader outcomes for the next school year. Speaking of outside, many of our students work extremely hard in their personal lives to master a skill - often to a standard of international competence. David Sandro is a perfect example. He recently won four medals in the junior artistic gymnastics individual apparatus finals at the Pacific Rim Championships in Colombia. One of his medals was gold on high bar. There’s no doubt that everyone in the school community could be recognized and rewarded for some aspect of their work and efforts. At Milton District High School, Mustangs strive for their best work, and now that the school year is ending, they deserve this recognition.
