FORGET ME NOT GALA - MAD HATTER’S BALL

An incredible evening was held in support of the Alzheimer Society of Peel with their annual fundraiser. Everyone showed up with very creative hats and some with matching outfits. Guests were welcomed with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the reception hall, then moved into the beautiful white-themed ballroom. Mississauga personality, Randy Persaud, entertained guests - taking selfies with all the gentlemen and then all the ladies. After a delicious meal, the dance floor quickly filled up with live entertainment from Groove Marmalade.

ASK

Dear The Wine Ladies, I’ve heard you talk about enjoying wines with chocolate many times and have dabbled in finding appropriate pairings. I’d love to throw a small party featuring the two but am not really sure where to begin. Could you offer me a couple of suggestions as to how many wines and how many types of chocolate I should offer, as well as the format the evening might take? April - Oakville, ON

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear April, We do love the idea of pairing wine with chocolate, and with Valentines Day around the corner your timing couldn’t be any better. To planning your party, where to begin? 1. THINK ABOUT OFFERING A RANGE OF CHOCOLATES, maybe five or six, with a varying degree of cacao content resulting in different levels of sweetness and pure chocolate strength. Consider too, chocolates that contain nuts or toffee, opening up additional possibilities. 2. NEXT SELECT A RANGE OF WINES, keeping in mind that in general sweeter wines such as icewines, sherry, tawny port or a Banyuls from France pair really well with chocolate. Throw in a fruity Zinfandel too for a different experience... don’t forget, it’s all about personal taste! Many sommeliers and experts love the pairing of dry Cabernets or fruity wines with dark chocolate while others opt for the classic, and romantic chocolate dipped strawberries and Champagne. Charlie Pillitteri, CEO of Pillitteri Estates Winery, N-O-T-L loves the pairing of dark chocolate with his Cabernet Sauvignon. The red berry flavours lend this red Icewine to pair beautifully with chocolate.

A few chocolate tasting tips that we’ve picked up over time include the advice of chocolatiers and connoisseurs. 1. DO NOT BITE INTO THE CHOCOLATE, but rather to allow the chocolate to slowly melt in your mouth maximizing the full range of flavors, texture and finish. 2. SAMPLE THE WINE FIRST ON ITS OWN, and then sample the chocolate. Next taste the wine again along with the chocolate in your mouth. Is the sum of the parts greater than the whole? Notice if certain flavors of either the wine or the chocolate are heightened or perhaps diminished? Share your taste experience and your thoughts with the others.

Another option, making life simple and taking out the guesswork would be to consider the absolutely delicious chocolate on the market called BRIX; the first ever to be crafted specifically to pair with wine. After much trial and error, the founder Dr. Proia an Ohio pulmonologist (who appreciated the antioxidants found in both wine and chocolate) developed three blends of chocolate with their root being of single origin Ghanaian chocolate known for their red fruit tones particularly suited to wine. Each of the four blends, of varying cocoa content come with suggested wine selections for optimal enjoyment. We were so impressed with BRIX that we now offer it in our store on our website.

3. BE SURE TO PROVIDE YOUR GUESTS WITH SEVERAL PALATE CLEANSERS such as fresh bread, simple crackers and pitchers of water. A selection of fresh cheeses accompanied by fresh fruit would round out the evening beautifully! - GEORGIA & SUSANNE

Should I

RENOVATE

BEFORE I SELL?

Should I renovate? Yes or no? And, if yes, how much should I spend? Article by: STEPHANIE HEBB

W

hen considering selling a house, many people ask whether or not they should renovate in order to garner a higher price. There is no one answer to this question as it very much depends on your specific circumstances.

There are two circumstances when it probably does not make sense to renovate and they are at either end of the spectrum. If your house is already the best one on the street, you are probably at the top of the market and won’t recognize any additional benefit. If your house is the worst on the street – in need of both costly repairs and remodeling – it probably makes sense to sell as-is. One technique your REALTOR® might employ is to list slightly below market value, hold off offers until a specific time and try to create a competition that will push the sale price up as high as the market allows.

If your property falls within the two extremes it is more difficult to decide what to do. First, make sure you know your competition. What have homes sold for and in what kind of shape? Would “staging” be sufficient to show your home’s full potential? By staging I mean, fresh paint, de-cluttering, modernizing hardware and lighting fixtures and potentially renting some furnishings for the showings. If you determine that a renovation is necessary, be prudent about it. Set a budget and stick to it. And spend your money wisely. In general, kitchen and bathroom renovations generate the highest ROI so start there. Sometimes inexpensive solutions can go a long way. Replace the kitchen counter, reface cabinets and change hardware, the sink and appliances rather than rebuilding the kitchen from the floor up. In the bathroom, paint a neutral colour, re-glaze the tub, replace the toilet and vanity and change up old lighting fixtures and hardware. If in doubt, a REALTOR® can help you determine what steps to take based on recent sales in your neighbourhood.

How will I get you top dollar for your home? I’ll put my experience to work for you. • Expert negotiation skills • Extensive background in sales and marketing • Trusted by clients for over 20 years • Deep knowledge of the neighbourhood

JULIET MALEVOLENT … AN EVIL TALE BOOK LAUNCH

01

Young and old came out to enjoy a Saturday afternoon at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church for the book launch of PETA-GAYE NASH’S latest children’s book ‘Juliet Malevolent … An Evil Tale. The event featured children’s activities, a short skit and the book signing. Local MP Sven Spengemann and Ward 1 Councillor, Jim Tovey, were on hand with their greetings and helping to cut the cake. The skit was extremely well acted by local children who spent many hours rehearsing. Nash, the 2015 MARTY Emerging Literacy Arts Award Winner, collaborated with Brampton-based illustrator, Colin McClean, who brought to life the character’s emotions perfectly. The book’s positive message is ‘just be yourself’!

CAWTHRA PARK IS HELPING

THOSE IN NEED. AT CAWTHRA PARK we encourage thoughtful engaged citizenship that embodies the Peel Board’s character attributes. One of Cawthra’s staff members, Mr. R. Swyer is taking this to heart and together with several other families are sponsoring a Syrian refugee family who are slated to arrive in March 2016.

In support of this initiative, Cawthra has kicked off an awareness campaign that student groups have clamored to be a part of. It all started earlier this fall when the members of LEAP (Leaders Empowering All People), delivered a lesson to all Grade 10 students teaching them about the outbreak of the conflict in Syria and the perils faced by refugees. Inspired and anxious to help support Mr.

16

• COMMUNITY CAPTURED

Swyer in his goal to raise money for this family, student organizations from across the school became personally involved in this endeavour. A dedicated group of students involved in our community service group SHOUT (Students Helping Out) have raised $500 for the Syrian Refugee Family under the direction of staff sponsor Ms. Bourdon, by hosting a bake sale, selling craft items at Responsible Shopper and holding a raffle during the music department’s ‘Tis the Season concert in December.

Cawthra Park’s Student Activity Council hosted our annual C.O.O.L Conference (Cawthra’s Outlook On Leadership) where students were invited to spend the evening engaging in a series of collaborative leadership building exercises, followed by a keynote address by Canada’s very own Queen of R&B, Jully Black. The Student Activity Council contributed $750 in proceeds from their t-shirt sales to the sponsored family from Syria.

01

Jully Black had a phenomenal time dancing and singing with our students at Cawthra’s “COOL”, Conference and as a result, she recruited Tess Vosper, Aliyah Guthrie, Jenna Harris, and Jim Loc to film her viral music video in collaboration with GoodLife Fitness this past November. Look out for the music video called “Bom Bom”, featuring reggae artist Tanya Stephens! For over 10 years, our “Battle of the Bands” competition, lead by Mr. Brinton, lets Cawthra students hit the stage in front of a live audience, get immediate feedback from industry professionals and most importantly, raise money for incredible causes. Each year they choose a special cause to raise money for through donations and sponsorship. Last year they raised over $2,300 for Bicycles for Africa and are hoping to do the same this year for our Syrian family. Battle of the Bands takes place on Thursday February 4th at Cawthra Park S.S and tickets can be purchased for $10 at the school. Further details can be found at www.cawthrabob.com. Artistic Director and Drama teacher, Stacey Tiller is also getting on board with this endeavour by spearheading a benefit concert on April 1st, 2016 at 7:30 pm where talented singers, dancers and actors will share their passion for the arts and the willingness to help those in need. The concert will feature the talents of both staff and students at Cawthra Park S.S and each act will be carefully created to support the concept of the evening: The Struggle and Triumph of the Human Spirit. Tickets can be purchased in person at Cawthra Park S.S for $20. All proceeds will go directly to our fundraising efforts for our Syrian refugee family. With the help of all these motivated student groups, energetic staff sponsors and the thoughtful organization and compassion of Mr. Swyer, Cawthra Park has proudly raised $3,500 to date and is hopeful of meeting their goal of raising $7,000 by year’s end. If you are interested in making a financial contribution to this cause you can donate online at www.gofundme.com/ep99vrdw.

I have grown personally because I now have a better understanding of what I like as in I know what I would like to do in my future. I learned that there is a lot that you have to learn if you want to become a pet groomer/stylist. You need to know the name of the breeds of dogs that I could be grooming and that there are so many tools that you must have and know how to use properly to be a pet groomer. Additionally, I learned that I love to work with animals. I know now what career path that I will be taking in the future. I learned to bathe, dry and lift the animals, as well as trim/grind dogs’ nails properly and effectively. I also learned how to restrain a cat so that whoever is working on it will be able to do so with the most comfort. What I learned here will help me in the future to become a pet groomer/stylist because I appreciate how to make a dog clean and dry so that the owner can be happy with my work. As well, I have learned that being able to lift heavy dogs is a must because not all dogs are small like a Pug. Many thanks to you Tanya for using your time to help me gain confidence and build skills in my career path, and thank you for your patience and understanding. It has been a pleasure working with you and the rest of the Pooches N’ pals team. I look forward to seeing all of you in the future. here is no better time than now to start taking care of yourself and re-establishing healthy eating habits. The first way to do this is to put down the take-out menu and step in to the kitchen.

A recent survey from Leger and Activia showed that Canadians aren't afraid to stir the pot: An impressive nine in 10 Canadian women say that cooking their own meals at home on a daily basis is their preferred way to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Every grocery list should cover all of the essential food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy. Studies show that most of us don't get Canada Food Guide's daily recommended two to three servings a day. Yogurt is a recognized source of protein that can be incorporated into a recipe for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert. The Activia Challenge is a delicious, simple way to incorporate dairy into your routine – and provide a daily dose of probiotics. Preparing healthy recipes right at home often means no compromise on taste. Mairlyn Smith, professional home economist and cookbook author, recommends an easy way to transform Activia yogurt into a delicious trifle with this simple recipe:

RASPBERRY TRIFLE INGREDIENTS • 4 Lady Finger Cookies • 1 CUP (250 mL) frozen local Raspberries, thawed • 4 - 100G 0% Fat Greek Activia Vanilla Yogurt Each serving includes: 127 Calories ∙ 0.5 g Total Fat ∙ 0 g Saturated Fat ∙ 0 Trans Fat ∙ 9.1 g Protein

DIRECTIONS • Mash the thawed raspberries with a fork, set aside. • Break the lady finger in half and place in the bottom of each of the four bowls. • Spoon 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the mashed raspberries over top. • Open 1-100 g container of the Activia yogurt and spoon over top of the raspberries. Repeat with all four of the desserts. Place in the fridge. To soften the lady finger the dessert needs to set for at least 4 hours or overnight.

An event held at the Bradley House that celebrated all things Laura Ingalls Wilder from the popular original books “Little House on the Prairie.” Participants were given materials from various stations such as the kitchen, pioneer games room, dress up room, barn and outdoor fire pit, to make a rag doll. School Life CAWTHRA PARK

SECONDARY SCHOOL CAWTH R A PA NTH ER S O N T H E P ROW L ! On Jan 6th, the Cawthra Park boys’ hockey team and the Peel Police met in a grueling hockey match where the in the end Cawthra pulled the goalie to get an extra player and tied the game with minutes remaining. In just moments, they flew across the ice to score the winning goal resulting in an 11 to 10 win for Cawthra. The Officers involved had a great time and plan a rematch where Cawthra students look forward to defending their victory and raising money for an important Peel social organization; the Big Brothers and Sisters of Peel. Thank you to Peel Police for arranging this game and promoting community spirit. At Cawthra, we are proud supporters of the Peel Police. The Panthers participated in 2 tournaments at York University this year and finished as Finalists in both tournaments. GO PANTHERS!

CAWTH R A C ODES Advancing our youth in a competitive field! This year’s Hour of Code was a big success. Students from Visual Arts, Math and English spent one period learning how easy it is to write a computer program. The Hour of Code is an international online event that provides dozens of fun programming activities to introduce students to computer programming. Last year 60 million students participated from every continent. The whole idea is to show students that creating games, apps, and other software is fun and can lead to a successful career in Computer Science in virtually every field of employment. According to the U.S.A. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a Computer Science Major can earn 40% more than the college/university average. The Bureau also predicts that there will be over 1 million computing jobs opening by 2022, in every field of work. According to Workopolis, in an article, from 2014, about the Canadian job market: Nursing, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Engineering, and Human Resources are the five degrees which are most likely to land students a job in their field. They further went on to say that the most lucrative fields for first jobs in Canada are Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Math and Healthcare. Hour of Code activities are available all year long. Why not program Angry Bird, Star Wars or Minecraft? And, if you are up to a bigger challenge, try your hand at C++, Javascript, or Python. Choose Beyond Hour of Code, if you want to keep learning. Maybe you can be the next Mark Zuckerberg.

PORT CREDIT CO-OP AT CAW TH R A Co-operative Education is a four or two credit program that is a blend of in-class learning and authentic workplace experience. It is an opportunity for students to “try on” a career before they spend time and/or money on a post-secondary destination. It is also an opportunity for students to start building their professional network and to develop the skills and work habits required to be successful in the workplace.

SECONDARY SCHOOL Port credit Secondary School is finishing off a very successful semester. Creativity was first on the agenda for January we had our Senior Art Show “Lost in Creation”, it was a huge success. The talent of our students and the mentoring from our teachers was, as always, inspiring.

From restaurants to retail, veterinary hospitals and computer programing, Cawthra students gain incredible work experience. Thank you to all our community sponsors who provide mobile classrooms for our students!

The biggest thing to hit PCSS was our Great Canadian Welcome for Syrian Newcomers to Port Credit. We filled a 5 ton truck with donations of clothing, food, shoes, and house hold items all given to the Salvation Army to be distributed. Supplies came in not only from PCSS but surrounding schools. It was an overwhelming success, and we are proud and in awe of our Port Credit Community for out doing our grandest expectations. A huge thank you to the School Activity Council led by Greg Maule, and School Parent Council for organizing the entire event.

DECA is one of the most popular extracurricular activities, at Graydon, because of its connection to our International Business and Technology Regional Program and staff contributions. Many of the winter sports came to a close during the month of February. The swim team participated in ROPSSAA with all of the students obtaining personal bests in the pool. The team is awaiting final results to see if any of Graydon’s swimmer’s are moving onto the OFSAA competition in March. The boys basketball team is competing in their divisional finals with outcomes soon to be known. The spring season will be starting shortly; after all winter sport competitions are completed.
