MAPLE SYRUP FESTIVAL @ BRONTE CREEK Article by: Leslie Styles
The Maple Syrup Festival took place every weekend in March and throughout March Break, at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Trees were tapped on Maple Lane, where interpreters demonstrated sap collection and processing into maple syrup. The tours ended at Spruce Lane Farm, where fresh maple sugar and taffy were offered. Many children also enjoyed a pony ride in the farm yard. It was a great time had by all.

DO YOU HAVE THAT WORK PLAY BALANCE? I’ve never worked for anybody, I’ve always worked for me. Today, if my kids are sick, I’m right there. I may have 5 pages to write, but instead I finished the dishes because my wife was up all night with the sick kids. So, you balance everything. It’s about prioritizing.
TELL OUR READERS WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HEALTH RECENTLY. I almost died a year ago. They found out I had colon cancer.
HOW DID THE CANCER DIAGNOSIS CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Article by: Sue London
ANSON WILLIAMS I had the honour of interviewing Anson Williams, also known to millions as Potsie Weber, from the hit TV series, Happy Days. I found Anson to be a personable, outgoing humanitarian. He truly inspired me.
YOU PLAYED POTSIE ON HAPPY DAYS, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY? It’s not a favourite memory, because it wasn’t just playing a character. I was only 23 years old at the time. Now, it’s 40 years later and the cast has contributed to entertainment and social issues. All that was stimulated by Garry Marshall. He inspired all of us to not get in the way of ourselves and to appreciate being on this major movie lot. The show was great, playing Potsie was great, all that was fun, but it actually became a minor part of the experience.
YOU GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU WERE TRULY A FAMILY. DID IT FEEL LIKE YOU WERE? Yeah and also at the beginning, all of us took the opportunity and educated ourselves. I think that’s why we’re still effective in the 10

business because we learned to wear many hats, we saw many other areas that we were interested in and we perused that. We didn’t get lost in the icing of fame.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN? I have five daughters. I have one that is married, two grandsons, four daughters still at home and that’s my focus in life. That’s a lot of work right there. My day is pretty much like everyone else’s as a dad, being a responsible parent.
I IMAGINE YOU’VE GOT A PRETTY BUSY LIFE STYLE. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU? I have been directing since 1985. I have directed and produced over 300 shows. If I haven’t been creating, I’ve brought in people to create problem solving products, within the last 20 years.
Today I am very lucky, cancer free and healthier than I’ve been in 30 years. However, it’s a determination, a mindset and living for more than yourself. I understand the importance of priorities and that was a wakeup call. We need to go back to the garden and go back to the beginning. Find yourself and find who you are. My family was almost poor, like lower level, we had a very small home with one bathroom. Deep down I knew I was something more, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Now that I’m older, I found out how important that tree was in our backyard, I never looked at it enough or appreciated it enough. It took me to go on this huge road in order to get back to the basics. I want to forward that to people and inspire them to think “I am okay” or “that’s where I want to go.”
I’M A FIRM BELIEVER THAT EVERYTHING HAPPENS IN OUR LIVES FOR A REASON. CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS ABOUT YOUR LIFE CHANGING CAR ACCIDENT? Many years ago, I was driving outside of Los Angles in the local desert, doing a shoot. It was a very hot and exhausting day. Driving home, I blacked out and the next thing I knew, I was bouncing around in the desert and almost killed myself. I had fallen asleep for like 3 seconds. It was enough to get off the road. I’m so lucky I survived this. I didn’t crash, but it scared me. I called my uncle, Dr. Heimlich, who created the Heimlich Maneuver, he’s actually my second cousin, but I’ve called him my uncle since I was born. I told him my situation and he explained how the body helps the body’s sensory connection and all that, basically natural ways to heal. He was a genius. He explained to me that when I’m having a hard day, I should keep cut up lemons with me. If I start feeling exhausted, to bite into it hard and he explained how the citric acid of the lemon would hit the nerve on top of your tongue. The automatic reflex reaction of the body is adrenaline and then you would feel alert. No caffeine or anything. Just the body working the body. It’s no different than going to the doctor and he has his little rubber mallet and he checks your reflexes. Happy Days Cast
CAN WE GET THESE DROPS IN CANADA? If people go to AlertDrops.com, they can learn all about the product. It’s all natural, so nothing will hurt you. It’s very old science. We just found a way to make it civilized and educate people on how the body can help the body. There’s nothing in your system and nothing to screw up your sleep pattern. You can order them on our website and on Amazon, but there are problems with the shipping. If you go onto AlertDrops.com and write to the info e-mail, which is me, we can figure it out and get it to you.
WHO IS BUYING ALERT DROPS? People have found that construction sites in America have banned energy drinks and similar products and now they are buying alert drops. EMT’s, doctors, nurses and anybody that needs to be alert in their jobs are buying it. Kids are using it in classrooms before tests. Anybody that needs to be alert and clear, it’s great for. It suits your own body and makes it alert. No stimulants, no caffeine, nothing.
WHAT TIME DO YOU FIGURE PEOPLE SHOULD GO TO SLEEP AND HOW MUCH SLEEP SHOULD THEY GET? I don’t know what time to go to bed, but you need 8 hours. Early to bed, early to rise. The other thing is to not eat past 6pm. Get a good breakfast, smaller lunch, tiny dinner, so your body doesn’t have to work.
WHEN YOU SUCK ON THE LEMON, HOW LONG DOES IT WORK FOR YOU? It lasts 30 min to an hour. Everyone is different because everyone’s body is different. If it only lasts 10 min, take another hit, there’s nothing to hurt you. So, I did that for years and I never had the problem again. Then during those years, I had gone into the product business. I loved finding a problem and I loved creating a solution. So, I started researching drowsy driving. In 2012, the National Sleep Foundation did a study and at the time, there were 168 million drowsy drivers a year. Today it’s worse. One out of five people admitted to falling asleep. There are more accidents and deaths from this, than from medicated driving and drunk driving combined. If you lose 2 hours of sleep, it equals 3 beers driving.
THAT’S VERY SCARY. WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT? I called Dr. Heimlich and I said “because of this information you gave me years ago, I have an idea. What do you think?” I said, “what if we get the right amount of citric acid, with the right amount of sour lemon, a little water and a little preserve for shelf life. What if we just put it in a spray gel? What if we just spray the middle of your tongue?” He said, “Yes! Anson! That would be twice as effective as biting into the lemon. You’ll save more lives than the Heimlich Maneuver. Absolutely do it.” Then we did. It’s called Alert Drops.
Anson with Dr. Henry Heimlich
CAN YOU SHARE ANY LAST WORDS OF WISDOM? Be everything in life, be in life, don’t be of something and don’t hide behind anything. Take the time to find out who you are. Don’t get brainwashed in constant media. You know yourself best. Find yourself, take some quiet time and learn to meditate. Find who you are, you will find your own direction, you will find yourself and you will find your place. You don’t need all this icing, you need to find the cake. That’s the centre of who you are and what you are about. Dr. Heimlich always said, “we’re all going to die, all of us. The purpose of your living is to leave something behind that doesn’t die.” That’s what he did; he left behind saving lives. Leave behind something more, leave behind something purposeful and make your life meaningful. Make this place just a little better because you were here and let it continue on, to the hearts and minds of everybody you touch. COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA •

The Bronte BIA hosted its Annual Easter Eggstravaganza in Heritage Waterfront Park, on March 31. Oakville families flocked to the gazebo to celebrate spring and to meet and greet the Easter Bunny. Toddlers had their faces painted. There was music, balloon animals, colouring and more. Recognized by pink and yellow balloons, participating village shops handed out yummy treats all along the bunny trail. For the adults, Denningers Foods supplied a gourmet gift basket for the draw. It was a very egg-citing event!

co-author and past editor of Simon & Schuster, Greer Hendricks. It goes without saying that The Wife Between Us is a page turner, but it’s more than that. It keeps us on the edge of our seats as the plot thickens and we realize that what we assumed to be true, is shrouded in mystery.

Written in the voices of two characters (there’s more to this but I can’t give it away), the book scatters hints throughout, but manages to keep all of its secrets to the end. It had me fooled with its many twists and turns, plots and sub-plots with culprits I hadn’t imagined. Authors Pekkanen and Hendricks have the winning formula for a best seller. If you liked Gone Girl, you’ll like The Wife Between Us.

or centuries visual artists have been aware of the “Rule of Thirds” (which is more of a guideline). An image is divided both horizontally and vertically into thirds (1). Important elements in the picture, such as the horizon or vertical structures, are optimally located on these lines. When taking a photo, it is a natural tendency for the subject to be placed in the middle of the frame, but at the time of editing or while actually taking the photo, the photographer may compose with thirds to enhance the final result. Horizons are the easiest to place along either the upper or lower horizontal third (images 2,3,4). In addition, dominant vertical structures (the tree in 4, the lighthouse in 5) can also be placed along either the right or left vertical third.

MILTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
Recently at MDHS, there has been nothing but adventure, success and community. Positivity and care for others is something we strive for and this past month, we have achieved it! Whether it was around the school or in another country, many of our students have grown as people and as students.
While it’s important to care for oneself as a student, it is also important to be generous and help others at times too. MDHS hosted a Blood Donor Clinic and a OneMatch (bone marrow) registry There’s no doubt that our athletes are spectacular, bringing home several awards and victories. As the winter sports season came to an end, our curling team made it to OFSAA and Hannah Anderson, Katie Coveny, Megan Evans and Hillary Ford were the athletes that brought silver home to MD.
and there was an outstanding number of participants! 55 staff and students joined the OneMatch registry and 34 gave blood. These individuals can help save lives for those who need it. To finish up the month of March, the Mustangs in Blue team members were out in the front foyer, helping some of the messier students clean and organized their binders and backpacks. Lined paper, colorful dividers, hole punchers and new binders were provided to help students remain organized for the rest of the semester. The participating students received a free gift voucher and a neater set of notes for lower anxiety and greater success. So much more is coming next month at MDHS. Our adventure continues as our students continue to grow and give back to the community. Written by: Maija Shea (editor, MDHSnews.ca)
School trips are often local, but once or twice a year, all students embark on a trip across the border. Fourteen students took a 5-day trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and had the time of their lives while also learning a thing or two. They visited a different park each day and participated in 3 programs involving leadership skills and strategies to better themselves in their careers for the rest of their lives. Thanks Ms. Miller and Ms. Nuqui for the awesome trip!

Dear The Wine Ladies,
ASK
My brother-in-law and his wife just returned from a holiday in Provence and brought back a unique wine called “vin cuit.” What exactly is vin cuit? I know “cuit” means “cooked,” but I always thought it was a bad thing if a wine was described as “cooked.” - Chelsea
THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Chelsea,
Yes, you are right in saying if a wine is being described as “cooked” it is definitely not a positive. What is cooked wine? Essentially, wine that has been damaged by heat either during transportation or during its storage. One potential sign of a cooked wine could be a cork possibly pushing itself through
Vin Cuit on the other hand is quite a different story. It is rarely found outside of France and is most commonly available in the south of France in the glorious wine region of Provence, where it originated. After the harvest, usually sometime in October, winemakers begin the annual tradition of making Vin Cuit. Over a fire of oak wood, they place a huge cauldron filled with the juice from select pressed grapes, usually Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. The juice is then cooked for about ten days with a constant watch over so as not to boil. The liquid is reduced by as much as half and leaves a concentrated level of sugar. The juice then ferments, with a majority of the sugar being converted to alcohol but not all resulting in a high sugar as well as fairly high percentage of alcohol in the wine. Final step is the aging of the wine in oak barrels for up to two years. Vin Cuit is considered a dessert wine and apparently pairs beautifully with Roquefort cheese and foie gras. There is only a very small production of Vin Cuit as you can imagine and quite a find.
the capsule after it has expanded due to the heat. If the wine no longer has a fresh fruity flavour, but rather a flavour that seems stewed, baked or burnt, then you have a “cooked” wine.

MORTGAGE INSURANCE:
ARE YOU REALLY
PROTECTED?
There’s nothing more exciting than being a new home owner. If you’re like most Canadians, your home will be at the centre of your family and social life. Given that your home is your most important investment, it makes sense to keep it secure for your family. You may wish to consider mortgage insurance. The challenge is that many Canadians aren’t familiar with how mortgage insurance works or the full extent of its coverage. This often leaves many vulnerable. Home-buyers often first hear about mortgage insurance from their lender, during the mortgage application process. It’s often presented as an easy-to-approve and affordable solution designed to pay off the debt in case of death, allowing your family to remain in your home. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. The problem is that lender employees are not employed as life insurance agents and may not be trained to determine if you are actually qualified for mortgage insurance at the time of your application. They tend to decide this after a claim has been made through a process called post-claim underwriting. If the lender finds any discrepancies on your initial application, which may happen because their employees are not professional life insurance agents fully trained and experienced in all the medical and lifestyle questions, your claim could be denied.
