On June 8th, families played and learned together at the Grimsby Library’s 6th annual Building Literacy Fair, sponsored by Phelps Homes Ltd. There was seed planting, balloon animals, yummy freezies, crafts, sidewalk chalk, fun literacy games & activities and so much more. Parka the Parks Canada Beaver was there for a fun story time, Speech Services Niagara shared interactive games, Waste Management Niagara taught kids all about recycling and the Play Project Parkour course got them moving as part of the Power Off and Play initiative at the Library. What a way to kick off summer in Grimsby!

THE RAIN rainy day should not be a reason to leave your camera behind. First, protect the camera. Take photographs from a sheltered location, have someone hold an umbrella, or bring out the camera for only the time needed to shoot. Fortunately, most smartphones can resist some moisture. For expensive cameras, rain covers can be improvised or purchased. Second, look for my four “C”s to bring interest to rainy weather photography: Colour such as umbrellas (1), raincoats (2); Close-ups (3); Consequences such as puddles (4), raindrops (5); Courage for the subjects in the rain (6). 6

t was a hot one on Canada Day, but that didn’t stop many of the folks in Grimsby from coming out to the Grimsby Museum and celebrating Canada’s 151st birthday. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment, food, games and the bouncing castles. A special dedication was made to the new Vimy Tree, planted to honour the soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge and other battles of the first World War.

I was Co-Captain of my University basketball team. Helping people reduce or eliminate the need for medications, helping people move without pain or stiffness and helping people lose body fat is always a great achievement of mine.
I’d say, this life is our only at-bat and we need to swing away trying to accomplish everything that makes us happy. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help and at the same time offer as much help to others as possible.
This is a tough question, as I love getting lost in a movie. Gladiator and The Matrix are up at the top of my list, along with Good Will Hunting and the original Point Break.

Q: What makes you laugh? My wife is quite funny. She has always managed to make me fall off my chair in laughter.

Q: Who is your favourite superhero and why? My favourite superhero is Batman because he has no super-human power. However, he does has tremendous courage and fight.

Helping people achieve their goals is great, but helping people realize they can do something they never thought possible gets me out of bed in the morning. Unfortunately, many of us put a limit on what we can achieve but usually it just takes a little shift in mindset to get them believing.
People who overcome adversity inspire me. The measure of a person can be seen in how they react to being dealt an undesirable hand.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given? This is a tough question because I’ve been given lots of great advice by family, friends, mentors, etc. A few mottos I live by are:

- You must put in the work - Have patience and be consistent - Don’t waste time and energy on what’s out of my control, only focus on controlling my own thoughts and reactions.
Q: What does the word community mean to you? I think of community as extended family. We are much more powerful working together than working exclusively on our own.
Q: What is the one thing few people would know about you? I have completely abandoned basketball for golf. I don’t play it (due to injuries) nor do I watch it on television.

NELLES MANOR BY SUE LONDON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATTINA THIRAPONG
elles Manor is the oldest inhabited dwelling between Niagara and Kingston. It was built in the period of 1788 - 1798 by Colonel Robert Nelles. A loyalist from the Mohawk Valley, New York, Nelles and his family were among the first to settle at the Forty, known today as Grimsby, following the American Revolution. The Nelles family were fortunately given land by Joseph Brant, the chief of the Mohawk people. The Nelles family emigrated from Germany to England, to the Mohawk Valley. During the time of the American Revolutionary War, they were forced to flee Mohawk Valley to Upper Canada in 1783. During the US War of Independence, the Nelles family were divided; some supporting the crown and others supporting the new American effort and eventual government. After the war, Robert and his father Henry, who had fought for the British during the American Revolution, were not allowed to return to New York State. Due to their wartime activities, their property and holdings in New York State were confiscated. Some of the remaining Nelles family decided to move to Upper Canada. The Nelles family became what are now known as United Empire Loyalists (UEL). This led directly to the settlement and building of the Nelles House in Grimsby. The Nelles Manor was built after the Nelles’ settled in Grimsby, but well before the American invasions in the war of 1812. The house was fully built and lived in by the Nelles family by the time the Americans declared war on the British. The Niagara Peninsula became a gateway for American fighting forces to work their way from the American frontier on the East side of the Niagara River as they reached for Burlington, York and eventually Kingston. Nelles Manor was occupied by British and local militia during the War, but on at least two occasions, were also occupied by American forces that had moved up from Niagara. Col. Robert Nelles was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the Upper Canadian Legislative Assembly, and Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Lincoln Militia. In addition, he fathered fourteen children, eleven of whom made it to adulthood. The home was lived in by four successive generations of the Nelles family. In 1971, The Coutts bought Nelles Manor off of the widow of Col. Robert’s great-grandson. After the Coutts’ purchase, they slowly restored it back to what it looked like decades ago. Now turned into a museum, Nelles Manor is open to the public for all to experience the history. For Nelles Manor Museum hours, visit nellesmanor.ca

he Victory Ball celebrated the end of the war of 1812. Even though the war ended in 1815, the Victory Ball was not held until three years later on June 4th, 1818. Two hundred years later, Nelles Manor hosted a Victory Ball on June 10th with period-correct refreshments, local entertainment and complimentary tours complete with costumed re-enactors. Nelles Manor is a volunteer run museum, where all money raised is put towards the restoration of the historical home. For future events, visit www.nellesmanor.ca.

Eden placed in every category first or second spot! Eden’s Field Hockey club has grown every year since it’s inception in 2011 and is looking to build on their recent successes this coming fall season! In 2017 we were both Zone and SOSSA Champions and in 2018 we won Zone and narrowly lost in a shootout at the SOSSA final. For the past 6 seasons there have been two teams and this year 52 girls competed, over half of which were new to the sport. Many grade 12’s came out last year as rookies wanting to try a new sport before they graduated, and said “I’m so disappointed I didn’t start playing earlier!” There was also a large group of grade 9 girls, who came out and found it a great way to make new friends as they ventured into high school. Field Hockey is listed as the 3rd most popular sport world-wide behind soccer and cricket but isn’t as well known here in Canada. To most, this is a new sport and NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED to join the team. Field Hockey (called hockey outside North America) uses the positioning of soccer and curved sticks that are hip height. The season starts on the second day of school and our philosophy is that there is a spot for anyone who wants to come out and be active and have fun! 16

BA R R E L S B LO O M Anyone walking through downtown Beamsville will notice the incredibly beautiful wine barrel planters throughout the area. These barrels were decorated with designs from local wineries, by BDSS art students and planted with fresh greenery by our Specialist High Skills Major Horticulture students. The project was the result of an amazing collaboration between BDSS, the Beamsville BIA, seven local wineries and the Town of Lincoln - Thanks to Mr. Belding and Ms. Tauro and their students for bringing their talents to the project, which has become the Provincial Flagship Event for Gardens Canada! P O P U P K I TC H E N @ T H E B E A M SV I L L E FA R M E R S M A R K E T BDSS students brought their culinary talents to the Beamsville Farmers Market on June 9th, by creating a pop-up kitchen featuring locally grown ingredients. Under the leadership of Chef Claudio Marchese, our hospitality students created an array of delicious, healthy and locally grown dishes for market patrons to sample. Excellent work! SECONDARY SCHOOL GSS has many high achievers to celebrate this spring! Many of our students have received amazing post-secondary offers and opportunities. This month we are showcasing three of them. M I M I D U N DA Congratulations to Mimi who has accepted a full scholarship to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). The D1-Roos are happy to welcome her to their volleyball team as a Middle Blocker while she earns her degree in Communications, including Film and Media studies. Her hard work with the club team “Halton Hurricanes,” who just won provincials, is paying off. TAY LO R L A N O S K Y Congratulations to Taylor who, among a variety of scholarships, has been awarded the Undergraduate Research Scholarship at the University of Ottawa. With this research scholarship, she moved to Ottawa at the start of July and began her work as part of a world-class scientific research group alongside senior PhD students and professors. This work focuses on cellular and molecular medicine, looking into how genes and biochemical processes control living cells and examines how and when genes are expressed. Taylor will be observing cellular individuality and complex biological phenomena and how it relates
to uncertainty in drug response with the aid of sophisticated mathematical models and computer simulations. Alongside this research group, she will contribute to the construction of synthetic DNA to mimic or control natural gene networks. Not only is Taylor a student scholar, but she is a very athletic and creatively-inclined individual. She plays rugby, is a respected mentor of over 110 girls between the Lincoln Leapers recreational, competitive and performance teams that she coaches (alongside competing herself), loves writing poetry and the dramatic arts, has her hunting license, enjoys fishing and outdoor recreation and is part of various conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited. Taylor’s hard work and determination shows in the accolades she’s been given. Due to her high academic achievement she has also been granted the ORSO Provincial Jump Rope Scholarship, reflecting her athletic accomplishments in the sport. Ever since she was little, Taylor has been a go-getter who reaches for the stars; this motivation and persistence isn’t stopping anytime soon. She hopes to give meaning to her life by helping others whose lives would otherwise be compromised. F E L I C I A M A I O LO Felicia was recently notified by the University of Guelph that she is the recipient of a few scholarships as a result of her outstanding academic achievement. Most notably, she is the recipient of the President’s and Chancellors’ Academic Leadership Scholarship, which is awarded to a student for outstanding academic achievement. She will also receive the Dr. Jack Britney Scholarship, which is awarded to the student entering the University with the highest admission average and the Atkinson Family Scholarship, which is awarded to a student entering a degree program offered by the Ontario Agriculture College with the highest admission average. Felicia will be majoring in Animal Biology. Ultimately, she plans on pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine. These are only three of the many graduates who we celebrated in June! We wish all of our graduates much success in their future, whether it includes, university, college, an apprenticeship or entering the workplace. As another school year comes to a close, plans are in high gear for September, as we prepare to welcome our students and staff for another year of learning together and achieving success in the classroom and beyond. CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL N O N E B U T T H E B R AV E Over the night of May 25th, Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School held a life changing event for staff and students by participating in their 3rd biennial Rankin Rally. This event allowed students, staff and survivors to come together as a community to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Over 400 students at BT were involved in this event. With so many lives being affected by cancer, these students came together to show their support for a good cause. The idea of the event was for students to stay awake for 12 hours and walk the track to understand the struggle cancer patients and survivors endure on a daily basis. The night started with a tree planting ceremony to demonstrate new life. The tree that was planted was a yellow magnolia, which symbolizes strength and new beginnings. As the night progressed, the Rankin committee encouraged students to continue their walk through the use of announcements and around the clock activities. These activities included haircutting ceremonies at 11:00pm, a talent show at 2:00am, constant games, delicious food and movies. Months of planning and dedication went into this life changing event. Grade 12 committee member Kate Barich reflected on the event by saying “Rankin was a lot of hard work, and it was amazing for the community to come together for one cause.”
The success of this event could not have been achieved without the participation and support from all members of BT and the surrounding community. The community played a crucial role in this event through generous donations of food, games and much more. In total, the community donations added up in the thousands of dollars! This, combined with the efforts of the BT community, resulted in over $50,000 for cancer research in the Niagara region. BY KIARA LEBLANC & MACKENZIE BROWNLEE BT F E ST Student Council kicked off the final month of the school year with their main event, BT Fest. This day is put together to celebrate the ending of another school year and to reward students for all their hard work. Completely organized and run by members of Student Council, this event is the result of various fundraising events starting in September with the Thundercard Fundraiser. The day kicked off with the extracurricular and alumni awards assembly, as well as the premiere of the annual all school music video created by Blessed Trinity’s Rolling Thunder Productions Crew. Food trucks, bouncy castles, obstacle courses, music, games, and a dunk tank were enjoyed by students and staff alike. With great weather, great food, and even greater company, BT Fest was a major hit again this year. BY HANNAH WHITELAW YO U N G AU T H O R S The grade 12 Writer’s Craft class offered at Blessed Trinity gave students the opportunity to find their own voice. Throughout the semester, students were given inspiring experiences such as attending the Young Writer’s conference, where they discovered the art of poetry. In addition, the course provided assignments which covered a wide aspect of writing styles, helping individuals to distinguish their own creative presence. By the end of the semester, students walked away with beautiful portfolios filled with their own work, potentially leading to brighter futures. This course fosters creative thinking, allowing young authors to be exposed to the literary world. As they graduate, the grade 12’s will hold on to this memorable experience for a lifetime. It was clear from the tears in their eyes and the smiles on their faces that everyone was truly touched by the event. Grade 11 student Jackson Barnes notes the full impact of the event by saying “Rankin was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience that was definitely a highlight of my high school years.” Many other students found this to be a heartfelt event and mentioned that the magnitude of the event resonated with them on a deeper level.
