RONCY ROCKS On June 11th Roncesvalles Village saw the return of Roncy Rocks Music & Arts Fest West. From music and fashion to kids activities and 10 hours of live music, this day was filled with something fun for everyone to come and celebrate along the 18 blocks of Roncesvalles Avenue.
The day began at 11:00 am with live music on four different stages offering a wide range of music genres. Roncy’s own The Monkey Bunch was a huge hit with the kids and adults alike especially when they played their own hit “Honk, Honk”. The kids zone was a hot spot where kids could test their speed on the agility course, create a jewelled mask, go fishing, get their face painted to name just a few of the many fun activities.

There was a Juried Art Show and Sale where you could browse and pick up some beautiful pieces from local artists. And of course the food! There was so much incredible smelling food to choose from as I walked along the street and finally settled on the very messy but delicious pulled pork on a bun.
It was the perfect sunny summer day to celebrate local culture, commerce and community spirit. RONCY ROCKS!

East meets grill. Take your backyard to new places. Swap your traditional spices for next-level Japanese, Malaysian, Thai and Korean flavours. If you're up for some experimentation, try this adventurous equation: SWEET + SOY + SPICE = YUM. Heat + tang + smoke. Fresh chilies paired with tangy vinegar and mustard make the ultimate trio. Keep your taste buds guessing bite for bite, with this grilled sandwich.

SAUCE: • • • • • •
2 tsp (10 mL) Grainy mustard 1 cup (250 mL) Prepared guacamole 2 tsp (10 mL) Fresh orange juice 1 tsp (5 mL) Orange zest 2 tbsp (30 mL) Club House La Grille Spicy Pepper Medley Seasoning 1/2 tsp (2 mL) Club House Crushed Red Pepper
D I R E CT I O N S STEP 01 For the chicken, whisk together all marinade ingredients in a bowl until well blended. Reserve 1/4 cup (50 mL) marinade for brushing on chicken during grilling. Place chicken in a large resealable plastic bag or glass dish. Add remaining marinade; turn to coat well. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer for extra flavour.
STEP 02 Meanwhile, for the avocado mustard sauce, combine mustard, guacamole, orange juice, orange zest, pepper medley and red pepper. Mix until well blended. Cover. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
STEP 03 Remove chicken from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade.
STEP 04 Grill chicken over medium-high heat for 4 to 5 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through, brushing with reserved marinade during the last few minutes of cooking. Spread French bread with avocado mustard sauce. Top with lettuce, tomato and chicken. Sprinkle with green onions. HEAT STROKE:
THE HOTTEST TIPS OF THE SEASON ‘Summertime and the living’s easy’ are words to live by for you and your pet after a long winter eagerly anticipating the romps in the park and diving for balls at the lake. It is however, a time that can quickly become dangerous for our furry friends. As the temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, our pets are at higher risk of heat stroke due to a variety of factors, including an inability to dissipate heat quickly (they only sweat through their paws), an ever-present fur coat, an inability to pace themselves, and having extra insulation (about a third of dogs are considered overweight). Some breeds, such as brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, etc), are most at risk for heat stroke due to their anatomical features that predispose them to an inability to take in air appropriately, which makes regulating and reacting to extreme heat much more challenging. It is imperative to know your dog’s limits and recognize the signs of heat exhaustion (the stage prior to heat stroke). These signs include heavy panting, bright red gums/tongue, rapid heart rate and lethargy. Without intervention, heat exhaustion can quickly evolve into heat stroke, characterized by collapsing with an inability to rise, vomiting, explosive diarrhea and potentially muscle tremors/seizures. If a dog shows any of the above signs, this is an emergency situation and immediate steps are needed to alleviate the situation. Firstly, remove the dog from the source of heat and place them in a cool environment, initiate cooling with wet towels and contact your closest veterinarian immediately - even a few minutes can make all the difference in the world. As with most emergency situations, prevention is the key. Keep mid-day walks to a minimum - preferably, take them for walks early
in the morning and late at night, keep them in a cool environment and provide ample cool water to keep them hydrated. The sun and heat introduce several other risks to keep in mind when out and about with your pets. We have all run frantically on tip-toes over a hot deck or have had friends recount the time they fried an egg on the sidewalk - keep this in mind when planning your next outing with your pet. Sidewalks and asphalt can burn up in the sun and can be painful and even lead to footpad injuries for your pet. Walking in the morning/evening and keeping your dog on the grass can be helpful in avoiding any painful run-ins with pavement. Although there has been recent media attention condemning owners who leave animals in cars, it unfortunately continues to happen. Please remember that with heat and humidity, temperatures in cars can exceed 60 degrees celsius within minutes! Be sure to make alternative plans - leave your pets at home, take them in with you or tie them up in the shade to ensure they remain comfortable. While one must be careful during this season (especially with those that are at higher risk), it is not to say that one cannot relish the outdoors. The summer gives us so many opportunities to get out and enjoy our pets (as I was reminded this past weekend, there is nothing better than seeing your pup get the first swim in of the summer). Be sure to make the most of the season for both you and your pet by following these simple tips.

PEACE GARDEN What was once a barren corner at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Roncesvalles has now been transformed into a beautiful, peaceful public garden for all to use and enjoy.

• COMMUNITY CAPTURED
Through many years of collaborations from over twelve community organizations and countless volunteers the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden came into fruition by the passionate FRIENDS of DRPG.
The official grand opening of this amazing space took place on Saturday June 11th. Councillor Gordon Perks was the Master of Ceremonies who helped acknowledged the Land and introduced the many Community Partners who participated in the transformation of the Peace Garden. Toronto’s first indigenous artwork on a signal box artist Aura (Monique Bedard) shared a beautiful poem and explained how her painting represents women on a path and their journey taken.
The DRPG sits on the shared lands of the Mississauga Anishnaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Wendat Indigenous people and is a place of significant heritage. The rich history of this site dates back to 1787 when the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation made treaties for this land.
Located in the heart of Roncessvalles this special place welcomes old and young to come, sit and enjoy the heritage of many that came before us. Speaking to the slogan of the garden “Sharing heritage, we find one humanity.”
