Paws Up to Community Love! THIS YEAR’S WOOFEST WAS A BARKING SUCCESS! Woofest raised $5,000 before the event even kicked off and a total of $12,500 thanks in large part to the wonderful local business sponsors eager to show their support for the surrounding community. My team and I (Josie Candito of Master Mechanic High Park) would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community for their support and a special thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time to make this event such a wonderful experience. An additional big thanks to the dedicated sponsors and donors as well as the musicians, Daniel Lanois and Crooked House Road for an amazing show that had everyone rocking out!
THANK YOU!
The festival was held at Master Mechanic in High Park in conjunction with the Dundas West Animal Hospital and included entertainment for dogs and their owners as well as lots of advise from dog trainers and attending vets.
The event also included contests with prizes going to the best dog costume, best dog smile and, of course the best dog trick, to name a few. With the live music and food provided by Barque Smokhouse in Roncesvalles, Woofest packed in over 1,000 guests as well as hundreds of dogs of every breed and size imaginable for a fun filled afternoon. The funds raised will be distrubuted to several local charities including The Mooseonee Puppy Rescue, The Farley Foundation, The Parkdale Food Bank, The Redwood and The Barrhead Animal Rescue. Some of the proceeds will also be going to help animals impacted by the fires in Fort McMurry. Our event also helped 4 puppies find new homes. A last thank you goes out to my event partner Scott Bainbridge of Dundas West Animal Hospital, my supportive husband Danny Candito, business partner Mike Tavares, my shop foreman Rui Silvestre, Service Manager Victor Cole and the rest of my team, especally Furbaby Charlie, for all their work behind the scenes.

Everyone gathered in Beaty Park where Jared Ong started the walk off reviewing the principles of Jane Jacobs’ theories of urban planning – connecting parks and villages and people – and how the Sunnyside Walk modelled these ideas. It turned out to be a perfect day for the 1.5 hour walk with discussions about historical facts of the area. LEARN ABOUT
JAPANESE KNOTWEED
Article by: Karyn Klaire Koski
Japanese Knotweed is an invasive, destructive plant that is banned in Britain. It’s presence through out England, decreases property values and it has now become illegal to deal with its removal on your own, government intervention is actually required.
01
CBC’s the Current & MACLEAN’S magazine have both reported about epic outbreaks in British Columbia. Ontario’s Invading Species organization actually has a hotline to report outbreaks of this tenacious plant that is damaging massive treks of rural areas as it upsets the eco system by overgrowth. It isn’t a native plant. The City of Toronto lists and provides information for residents to identify and eradicate Japanese Knotweed because the plant is capable of growing through building foundations and breaking through concrete and asphalt. Having it near your home can actually affect the resale of your house. RoncyWorks members wish to help inform residents of the Roncesvalles area because it has been spotted throughout the region. Most seasoned gardeners know about it, but every once and awhile a novice gardener will come across it and be charmed by it’s attractiveness. Many people think it is a bamboo of some kind.
02
The best way to get rid of it – is surface removal and destruction from leaf down or the use of herbicides. Digging up the ground and breaking the root system, actually encourages it to regrow into multiple plants. https://roncyworks.wordpress.com/2016/05/12/learnabout-japanese-knotweed/.

Sure to please, this fast and easy recipe courtesy of culinary instructor and former winery chef at Mission Hill Family Estate, Michael Allemeier, showcases a diversity of cultures with a mild but flavourful curry, served on hearty Catelli Ancient Grains Fusilli – all natural pasta with five wholesome ancient grains. This dish is also ideal for vegetarian guests, with the main protein component being queso fresco rather than meat.

STORM & FIREWORK PHOBIAS IN PETS
A
dmiring displays of fireworks and magnificent thunderstorms can be a time for awe and amazement for most people, unless there is a pet in the home that is terrified of these spectacles. For owners with dogs or cats who have storm or noise phobias, this can be a time of distress both for the pet, and for the owner. These phobias can present with many different symptoms, including panting, pacing, trembling, hiding, and can even lead to destructive behaviour or self-trauma in severe cases. Although the reaction to these sounds can be considered a normal adaptive behaviour to increase survival in the wild, the exact cause for severe phobias seen in some pets is often unknown. In many instances, there are useful methods that can be used to help your pet remain calm during storms or fireworks. Focusing on rewarding calm behaviour year-round for dogs is a good first step to preventing increased reaction and anxiety during stressful occasions. Keeping pets in their most comfortable spot in your home during a storm or fireworks can also be helpful. For a more anxious pet, a ‘ThunderShirt’ can be tried. This is a snug-fitting garment that provides a light pressure over your pet’s body and can help them feel calmer. If you have a new
puppy or kitten in the home, it is a good idea to provide praise and treats during any storms or fireworks to help prevent them from developing noise phobias. Another useful approach involves using a basic behaviour modification technique to help desensitize your pet to the noises that make them anxious. This will allow them to become familiar with the noise so they do not react as intensely when the real noises occur. Start by quietly introducing the sound that causes the anxiety for a few minutes each day (thunderstorm and fireworks sounds can be found on YouTube) while providing their favorite treats and toys to allow them to stay relaxed through the sound. Gradually increase the volume every few days until you are able to play the noise loudly while your pet stays relaxed. In some instances, these techniques may not be effective and having a discussion with your veterinarian may be warranted. In rare cases, medication may be required to help your pet relax. With a little time and patience and by applying some preventive techniques, we hope that both you and your pet will soon be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fireworks show!

THE REVUE’S ANNUAL FUNDRAISER Savoury snacks, French Burgundies and a light-hearted review of the culinary documentary Foodies were enjoyed at The Revue’s Annual Fundraiser on June 1st. Executive Director Aileen MacDonald and Docs in Revue programmer Samantha Hodder created a unique and entertaining community celebration which showcased a stellar team of neighbourhood talent. Highlights of the night were Carolyn Bennett’s stand-up into, host Matthew Foote’s take on the crazy world of fine dining, wine samples by sommelier Lesle Gibson from Mellecey Wine Group, and delectables from local business sponsors Stasis Preserves and Dundas Park Kitchen, and the movie of course.

THE BUDGET IN CHECK Article by: LISA BOGART
F
or those who haven’t entered the delightful world of furniture consignment shopping it can often be confusing. There are many different channels for selling used or vintage furniture and most people do not understand the difference.
The two main types of retail shops for selling used furniture are consignment and thrift, and the most notable difference between the two is the quality and the presentation of the items being sold. Consignment shops hand select their items to be sold and thrift shops typically accept donations or pay a small price and are therefore much less discriminating with merchandise brought in. In addition, consignment shops sell second-hand items on behalf of the original owner who then receives a percentage of the selling price when the item sells. Pricing is typically reduced after the first 30 days and each month thereafter. The items remain the property of the original owner (‘consignor’) until the item is sold or after a specified number of days (general range is from 120-240 days) then the items become the property of the store or are donated to charity. The mantra of every interior designer maintains that with furniture shopping it is critical to buy the best you can afford and strongly recommend consignment. The biggest complaint about mass produced or disposable furniture is that it devalues the second you swipe your credit card. Vintage or quality furniture retains it’s value, has more
character than their new counterparts and most importantly gives a home a unique and contemporary look. OTP Living, a division of ...of Things Past is Toronto’s newest consignment store offering an affordable well-curated array of vintage, contemporary and antique furniture and accessories. Pricing generally ranges from one-half to one-third of what the item would have retailed for originally. Our customers are design savvy and range from people renting their first apartment, designers and to those furnishing a 2nd home. If you haven’t yet discovered the thrill of consignment shopping, it’s a great way to freshen up your space.
T I PS WHEN BUYI N G CON SI GN MEN T 1. If you love it, buy it. The pieces in a consignment store are one-ofa-kind treasures and so often people return for that special piece and are heartbroken because it sold. 2. Measure and know your dimensions. Most consignment stores have a no refund policy 3. Remember most pieces are not new, test out the piece, sit on a chair, open a drawer and reflect on the history – every piece has a story.
