TRANSFORM YOUR OUTSIDE SPACE

into a

PARTY PLACE Whether you're looking to create a family-friendly space for entertaining, a serene poolside retreat or a secret garden that showcases your green thumb, begin by defining your vision. Having a clear idea of how your finished space will look and feel will help you make the best decisions as you begin designing the retreat of your dreams.

reating a perfect outdoor oasis is the first step toward a summer filled with carefree entertaining. This requires careful planning for the entire space. While the arrival of summer is the perfect time to start thinking about landscape elements, don't overlook the finer details, such as the furniture and accessories that truly bring an outdoor space to life.

F URNI TURE THAT F I TS Although tastes and trends may change from one season to the next, selecting the right furniture pieces from the start will let you bring fresh new looks to your outdoor space in other ways. Sectional seating is an attractive option because it allows you to redefine your space in minutes. Hosting a party? Strategically placed sectional seating can open up your space and encourage an evening of mingling. Prefer a more intimate arrangement for poolside conversations or a date-night in? The sectional can be rearranged into a closer configuration.

Look for a versatile collection in neutral colours, such as Pier 1 Imports'

Echo Beach Collection.

This sectional can be arranged in more than 20 different ways, allowing you to arrange and rearrange to your heart's content. To round out your furniture, consider the highly functional but often underrated garden stool. Place one in a quiet corner for meditative moments, pair them to create a one-of-a-kind coffee table or pull one up when you need an extra seat. As an added bonus, when cooler weather returns, you can pull your garden stool indoors for a sweet reminder of summer. Investing in the right pieces will save you time and money in the long run. When you're ready for a new look, you can easily change the feel of your patio with accessories or a new brightly coloured accent piece, such as a tiled bistro table or outdoor Papasan chair. >>>

YOUR STYLE Once your furniture is in place, you've got a blank slate to play with and, most importantly, to accessorize. Accessorizing is where the decorating happens and your personal style shines through. Add pillows, cushions, umbrellas, outdoor rugs and even outdoor curtains to your space, and what started as a dull patio will begin to transform into an extension of your home. To mix patterns like a pro, choose pillows and rugs in the same colour family, vary the scale of your patterns and introduce textures to ensure that they don't compete with each other. Be sure to layer in treasures that are uniquely you - lanterns, wall decor, statues and windchimes to establish a space bursting with personality. Remember, small changes can make a big impact. Refresh last year's patterns with the new trends, or simply add a few new accessories into your existing decor for a budget-friendly way to satisfy your urge to update. GRACE HOSPITAL + SARAH'S PLACE

WALK-A-THON

Families joined on Sunday, May 29th at Lakemount Worship Centre to participate in a Walk-a-Thon and BBQ fundraiser in support of building a pediatric facility in Puerto Plata called Grace Hospital. The girl's ward of the hospital will be dedicated as a living memory of Sarah Tapley. It will be called: Sarah's Place, a place of healing.

The Dominican Republic has been a needy nation for a long time. The poor children suffer due to lack of access to critical health care facilities. Most public health facilities are operated at sub-par standards. In the Puerto Plata region there is one general hospital. Despite the fact that it has seen some improvements due to mission groups investing time and donating some equipment to improve the conditions, the building was officially condemned after the earthquake in 2004. Few government investments have been made to improve

the building, and this hospital does not provide critically needed pediatric care. Due to significant supply shortages, we have sent several containers of medicine and medical supplies over the last few years to help patients who cannot afford the medicine prescribed to them. Additionally, sanitation disciplines are disappointingly in short supply, as patients are only given a vinyl-covered mattress without sheets. Poor disinfection protocols are in place, which leads to the spread of infection and other preventable health risks. Unless families take the role of primary caregiver the patient will receive little to no care. Doctors continue to diagnose and write prescriptions, but the patients are often unable to pay for the prescription required for recovery. Furthermore, we have found little to no pediatric care, so patients have to travel over four hours to the closest pediatric health care facility, which is prohibitive for the average person living in poverty. ›››

We have worked in this region through The Samaritan Foundation (an organization that builds critical infrastructure, such as houses, schools and vocational training centers for the poor), and have found that clinics often cover the cost for patients to travel lengthy distances to provide adequate care for children in need of medical attention.

02

For this reason, we have received a number of requests from health care workers to build a small (40 bed) pediatric facility to serve the 400,000 + people in the region of Puerto Plata. The hope and dream for every parent is for their child to receive medical care when they are sick. The poor of the Puerto Plata region are desperate for a place that focus on the health of children. The closest pediatric hospital is over 4 hours away, and not affordable to travel when you can barely afford to feed your family. Grace Children’s Hospital will offer a loving environment and highly trained staff to care for the children. Furthermore, a no-child-turned-away policy will be strictly enforced, to address the regions critical medial needs. Each child will experience bright and clean rooms with comfortable accommodations, state of the art equipment and care delivered with the Love of Christ.

PRESS RELEASE

NIAGARA'S CHALLENGE -

HEALTHY KIDS

In Niagara, 1 in 3 children and youth are overweight and obese and only 20% of youth are meeting the minimum physical activity guidelines of 60 minutes/day. Earlier this month, representatives from Niagara’s municipalities, community organizations, and school boards assembled for a Summit to discuss what can be done to change these statistics. They’re focused on the kind of programming, environments, and policies that could have the biggest positive impacts and reach the most families in need of support. Over the next three years, Niagara’s kids will see the positive effects of a $1,125,000 budget and it’s going to take all of Niagara’s municipalities linking resources and sharing ideas to address this growing crisis. Encouraging kids to RUN, JUMP, and PLAY every day will be the goal of all 12 municipalities over the next five months. Daily physical activity is the first of three themes in The Healthy Kids Community Challenge, a program which is being funded by the Government of Ontario in 45 communities across Ontario. The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is a key component in the Ontario Government’s Healthy Kids Strategy - a cross-government initiative that aims to improve children’s health and well-being by focusing on a healthy start in life, healthy food and healthy active communities.

Each municipality has begun launching their playful, healthy initiatives that will carry into the summer and have a lasting effect on Niagara’s kids. The next two themes are under wraps and the second theme will not be made official until July 2016. Organizers hint it could have something to do with nutrition but they can’t say for sure. School Life BEAMSVILLE DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL

June brings with it the best part of the school year - the BDSS Graduation ceremony - June 29th at 7:00 pm at the school. Mrs. Hoeg and Mrs. Davis work with staff and students to create an amazing celebration of student accomplishment. We take real pride in the achievement of our students, and taking this day to celebrate them is an absolute pleasure. Thank you to all the community partners who have generously donated resources to recognize the accomplishments of our students. BDSS truly is a community school, and our students certainly benefit from being part of such a supportive community. Spring registration is also happening at BDSS this June. Parents are encouraged to stop by the office before the end of the school year to register their students for September and to take advantage of the “early bird” discount for registering now, instead of in August. We are excited about being able to support families by offering this spring registration period - making the potentially hectic back to school routine easier to manage. The last part of the semester always means opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning from the past few months by completing culminating activities, rich tasks, and exams. Students are encouraged to continue to work hard, and ask good questions when they come up, so that their learning from the semester can by captured in these assessments. Our staff will continue to reach out with supports to support all students in achieving to their full potential. Please call the school with any questions, or if you want to discuss this important time of the year with your student’s teachers.

H O S P I TAL ITY PR OGRAM Students in our Tech Foods - Hospitality program have represented BDSS so well all year, and recently have participated in some exceptionally exciting events. Lead by teacher, and chef, Claudio Marchese, BDSS hospitality students have had the opportunity to cater events at BDSS all year - notably the grade 8 Open House in December, and the semester two Awards Banquet. Chef Marchese has also worked with students entering the DSBN Tech Skills competition, and obtaining their Safe Food Handling certificates through the Niagara Region. Recently, students from the program exhibited their talents at the Niagara Nutrition Partners Breakfast Gala - a tie in to their year-long work with the BDSS breakfast program. Chef Marchese has built an incredible program for students, and has worked successfully with the community to incorporate real world experiences into what they do.

AT HL E TICS Bucs athletes have had an amazingly successful spring sports season students competing in girls and boys soccer, track and field, and Special Olympics soccer have done very well in their respective sports. The Bucs boys and girls soccer teams each had great years - both ending their seasons at the Zone finals. Congrats to all the BDSS soccer players who worked especially hard to continue the tradition of excellence on the pitch. Bucs Track and Field athletes also had a great season, which continues as students move forward through each level of competition. Very notably, grade 9 student Autumn Bigger smashed Zone High Jump records and looks to continue her success through the highest levels. Athletes from our SSTC program will be representing BDSS at the upcoming Special Olympics Provincial Competition in soccer. These inspiring athletes always

do BDSS proud with their hard work, determination and sportsmanship. Thanks to all of the staff and volunteers who coach at BDSS - your support of our students transcends the playing field, allowing students to grow and learn key lessons that will also benefit them in the classroom, and in the rest of their lives.

BLESSED TRINITY

SECONDARY SCHOOL AB O RI G I N A L DAY - May 26, 2016 L ET US REC ON N ECT On Thursday, May 26, 2016 the Niagara Catholic District School Board will be celebrating Aboriginal Day. The theme of this celebration is Let Us Reconnect. The celebration is meant to bridge the two communities together as a form of reconciliation. Linda John is the keynote speaker and the celebration plans to bring drummers, dancers and singers to Blessed Trinity. The students have done much work showcasing Aboriginal Art and commemorating the Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women. As a Catholic school community, we are very proud to show the entire First Nations Metis Inuit community that we care. #letsreconnect

YO U TH & PH I L A N TH RO PY I N I TI ATI VE - May 26, 2016 This year marks are 4th annual YPI celebration at Blessed Trinity. Over the past three years, Blessed Trinity in conjunction with the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative led by the Toskan Casale Foundation has generously given $15,000 to local charities. On top of that, Blessed Trinity has also contributed an additional $1,500 and this year, the Grand Finale features five more groups vying for more monies. We take great pride in this activity and we predicate ourselves in making this Grand Finale the biggest and best in Canada. We thank all of our Grade 10 Civics and Career Studies students for taking the time to research local charities and advocating on their behalf. We also thank these students for taking Civics in the school year period as this is only open to those students and it really responds well to God’s vision and need for continued stewardship. We also thank our Grade 9 audience for being so respectful to their peers and for choosing the charity that they believe most deserves it. This too is a very important link to the Civics curriculum relating to informed and active citizenship. This year, the winner of the $5,000 grant was Community Living in Grimsby and the additional $500 was given to West Niagara Second Stage Housing. Many thanks to everyone who participated as judges Mayor Joyner from West Lincoln and Deputy Mayor Johnson from Grimsby.

S TOTES B U RY C U P REGATTA - May 20, 2016 ROWIN G Blessed Trinity’s Rowing Program has made a splash this season! This winter, five of our rowers competed in the Canadian Indoor Ergometer Championships, all reaching the podium! All of our athletes competed in the Ontario Ergometer Championships, with many landing in the Top 10! After a successful season of winter training, our athletes showed much promise on the water! A great deal of teamwork and mentorship allowed all of our rowers to be successful! At the Mother’s Day Regatta, the podium welcomed many Blessed Trinity Rowers! Elisa Vandersloot won gold in both the Senior Women’s Open Single and Senior Women’s Midweight Single, Abram van Engelen and Andrew Allan also received first place in the Junior Men’s Double, and Lauren Kelly took home gold in the Junior Women’s Single. Two weeks later, the rowing team dispersed

to the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia and the South Niagara Regatta in Welland. The Stotesbury Cup is the largest high school regatta in the world, and Elisa Vandersloot made Blessed Trinity incredibly proud by winning Gold in the Senior Women’s Single. Abram van Engelen and Andrew Allan captured Silver at this regatta as well with a nail-biting finish, one second away from the Gold Medal winners. These three athletes will be traveling to Ohio on May 26, to compete in the SRAA championships. At the South Niagara Regatta that same weekend, the rest of the team competed aggressively. The Senior Women’s Four captured 6th place in a close race and the Junior Girls Eight and the Junior and Senior Men’s Quads gained some great racing experience! Lauren Kelly won the Gold Medal for the Junior Women’s Single in the South Niagara Regatta as well. Along with Kelly, Van Engelen and Allan are a part of Rowing Canada’s Junior Development Squad, an invitational monthly monitoring team that works towards “Developing Canada’s Next Gold Medallists”. Kelly, van Engelen, and Allan all have high hopes of donning the Canadian Singlet one day. These three rowers will be competing in the Junior National Team Selection following Schoolboy, the Canadian Championships. Elisa Vandersloot will also be competing in this selection. Vandersloot is a senior at Blessed Trinity and will be rowing at the University of Tulsa this fall. A standout athlete, Vandersloot will be a wonderful representative of Blessed Trinity when she begins her post-secondary education this fall. These achievements could not be done without the hard work and dedication of the wonderful coaches at Blessed Trinity- Drew Edwards, head coach of the program has been with the program for many years, Kelley Mercuri, the team manager does a fabulous job at organizing the team and the events along with many talented community coaches who give such time and dedication to the program. The Blessed Trinity Rowing Team is looking forward to an exciting weekend of racing at Schoolboy on June 3-5, where they hope to collect many medals! GO THUNDER!!

GRIMSBY

SECONDARY SCHOOL The students at Grimsby Secondary School are very fortunate to have so many opportunities to support their learning outside the classroom. In May, students studying History visited the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. Their day began with a discussion about life during World War 2 in Canada where students dressed up as a WWII pilot and a female factory worker. They toured the museum and participated in a number of hands-on activities like building a model airplane wing, putting rivets into a simulated wing, and sending each other messages in Morse Code. A highlight was seeing the famous Lancaster which flew to England last summer to meet up with the only other Lancaster that is still in the air. Their day wrapped up with a lesson on rationing. The students had a great day of learning and experiencing life in Canada during WWII. We work with our community to provide varied learning opportunities for our students. The Grimsby Public Art Gallery works with our Visual Arts teacher to provide drawing classes at the Gallery. Drama students travel to Circus School in Hamilton to learn Circus skills which enhance their Theatre skills. Our Art students love when they can display their work and our community provides that opportunity through the GPAG

Youth Art Exhibit, the DSBN Young Artists Show and Graduate Art Show. Our English students will immerse themselves in Shakespeare when they attend a play at Stratford. The Phys. Ed students take their learning outside as they hike the Niagara Escarpment, play tennis at the Grimsby Tennis Club or Ball Hockey at the Peach King Arena and instructors from the community enhance student learning and overall health through yoga and other wellness activities. Students in our Technology programmes have competed in Skills competitions, videotaped community events, built a dog house to demonstrate their skills and supported the Parade committee by helping to build our float. Students in Health Care classes are working with children in a Day Care Centre and adults at the Senior’s Centre applying their theoretical learning about human growth and development in real life settings. These are just a few examples of the many ways learning extends beyond the walls of the classroom. GSS student Hayden Barker says it well in his Writer’s Club article titled “What is GSS?”. What is it within the halls of Grimsby Secondary that makes it whole? For anyone who has been here, that question is both as simple as two plus two and as complex as the meaning of life itself. Grimsby Secondary is both a simple school and a diverse cultural melting pot, where pride, hard work, and reward twist together, bonding the students and staff alike together in a celebration of diverse passions.

I, for one, think that what makes us a school to be remembered, and a school that truly teaches the values searched for out in the real world, are the extra-curriculars. These groups are the heart and soul of GSS, brave enough to step forward and follow the passions they have within, sharing their abilities with the rest of the student body and community. None of these groups would be possible without the collaboration of student and staff alike. They come together in just the right way to create masterpieces they can all be proud to place their names behind. Those who see high school for what it is - a time to explore who you are - are the most passionate and informed of us all. When one or more of these passionate individuals with a purpose, such as music, writing or art, gather together, the results can be tremendous. Grimsby Secondary has many of these individuals and creates more with each passing year. The environment at the school is one of creativity and support, allowing students with unbridled passion, both infectious and strong, to drive others to let go of insecurities and try out who they want to become in the future. It is this culture of encouragement that assists the faculty in creating the clubs and activities that can be both award winning and engaging for the students.

School Life It is this freedom and inclusion that the Grimsby Secondary environment allows - one in which any student can find a place to be safe, happy, passionate, and productive that result in the many concerts, projects, events, and our community reputation, that are beyond compare. Teachers challenge the students to rise up and do some of the most mature and powerful things that any student could do, becoming a part of something bigger.

As students graduate, we are confident that they have had a broad range of learning experiences and are well-prepared for whichever pathway they choose - university, college, an apprenticeship or the workplace. The Grimsby community generously supports our students as they move beyond secondary school by providing thousands of dollars in scholarships and bursaries. Students obtain these scholarships and bursaries by highlighting their academic and extra-curricular successes supported by the Grimsby Secondary School community. As you can see, diverse learning opportunities abound as we achieve success together!

On Wednesday, June 8, our Cooperative Education students shared and celebrated their learning with fellow students, staff, local employers and community partners at our Co-op Career Showcase. This event featured visual displays and provided attendees with the opportunity to interview Co-op students to learn more about their work placement experiences, the Co-op program, local businesses and career options. We are grateful to the many local employers who support our Cooperative Education program and provide our students with such valuable experiential learning opportunities. We look forward to this celebration of partnership and student success! The Spring Season field action left the Bears very proud of their athletes. The girls’ soccer team found their niche playing in a tournament at Niagara Christian College, playing many games with a 1 or 2 goal spread. Both girls and boys teams finished their season with their heads high, having improved records from the previous season. Integral to the teams’ success was the leadership of Caleb Mote and Cloey Lymburner, team captains and Rylee DeFaria, student assistant coach.

Finishing 2nd at a DSBN tournament, our girls slo-pitch team should be pleased, but they are hungry for the 1st place win next year. Entering a co-ed Ultimate Frisbee tournament for fun, the athletes at South realized another strength, placing third with many rookie players. Many students now have “Ultimate Fever” and our success leaves us with big plans for next year. All of our The Track and Field athletes placed in the top 12 individuals to qualify for Zone. On May 12th 16 of our athletes placed in the top 5 to qualify for SOSSA. At SOSSA, South athletes were competitive but only one placed top 5 in 3 events to qualify for the South Regionals on May 26 and 27th. At publication time, Grace Tennant is expected to move on to OFSAA to compete in Senior Girls Javelin, Discus and Shot Put. In May Sarah Nelles, a grade 10 student was selected to attend the Central Ontario Leadership Seminar at the University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus. The goals of this Camp are to: • Encourage and prepare the next generation of Canada’s civic, social and corporate leaders. • Provide young leaders with forums to learn “how” to think, not “what” to think, by offering independent and interactive opportunities for critical thinking. • Encourage personal growth by promoting positive thinking, goal setting and community involvement. The Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major students enjoyed a reach ahead experience at Brock University early this May where varsity athletes challenged our students to think about performance enhancing substance used during the “Succeed Clean” presentation. After a scavenger hunt tour, they taped and wrapped away, coming home with a Taping and Wrapping Athletic Injuries certification. HealthCare Horizons is a one day career learning opportunity for Grade 10 students to discover occupations in the healthcare field. Students spend an entire day at the St. Catharines Hospital where they will participate in interactive presentations such as a walk through emergency simulation with ER educators. They will also spend time on hands on activities where they will perform medical procedures on human-like manikin patient simulators at Brock University’s own simulation lab. This year Ashley McFayden will have a chance to participate. SLHS Library is a very active place. It has hosted the inaugural WL Youth Bridge Tournament, Reach for the Top Tournaments and the White Pine Reading Club. Open mic occurs every other Friday at lunch. Students can showcase their talent in a welcoming and supportive space. Thirteen students participated in the OLA Forest of Reading Program. They met twice weekly to discuss and foster insight into the books. The students set their own reading goals, entered a photo contest and kept reading logs. At the end of the program, students attended the DSBN’s White Pine celebration, and got to attend various workshops and the books’ authors. Shawn McDonald and Rachael Binns placed first and second in the photo contest.
