E N VIR O NMENT

By Cindy Wilding

I

call myself a Trash Walker. I do most of my trash walking here in beautiful Port Credit: home of great restaurants, parks, festivals and events. Its waterfront living, treed streets, and walkable neighbourhoods, make it ideal for my family but about two years ago I began to notice an alarming amount of trash on the streets in and around my home. I don’t think that there was a change that lead to an increase in trash, but rather that I opened my eyes and really saw the problem. It bothered me a great deal so I decided it was time to do something more than complain about the problem. I had already participated in, or organized park clean ups as part of Earth Day activities, but I came to understand that a one day clean up was just not enough. That’s how it started. I put on some gardening gloves, grabbed an old bucket, and walked down the street – and I’ve never looked back.

“ I put on some gardening gloves, grabbed an old bucket, and walked down the street – and I’ve never looked back.” I’ve picked up all the usual assortment of garbage: cigarette packaging, candy wrappers, plastic water bottles, coffee cups, dog poop bags and sadly even some syringes. On some days, I take what I call a “dedicated trash walk”, where I go out to a certain street or park specifically to pick up trash. Other days, I pick up at least three pieces of trash that I happen to come across while going about my day, whether it’s dropping my son off at school or heading out for groceries.

“Through our addiction to convenience and disposability, plastic consumption is to reach

“ By using social media, I’m hoping to educate and inspire others to trash walk also.” Almost a year ago I decided to document my trash walks. I set up a Facebook page and a blog, and now post photos and comment on what I’ve picked up. By using social media in this way, I’m hoping to educate and inspire others to trash walk also. It’s a slow process but well worth it on so many levels. Trash walking is great exercise and I’ve discovered that it’s a great way to clear my head. I am simultaneously gaining an audience, finding my voice and learning that there is a worldwide community of people doing just what I do. I’ve connected to many of them through social media and continue to learn through these connections about the severity of the pollution problems our planet faces. One of those issues dear to my heart is plastic pollution. Through our addiction to convenience and disposability, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by this year. We must all do something to help. Pick up that discarded water bottle on the side of the road and put it in a recycle bin. Bring re-useable bags to the grocery store. Bring a re-useable beverage container rather than a single use cup or bottle when you go out, and say no to a plastic straw in our drinks. These actions alone will not save the world but they are a step in the right direction, at least this Trash Walker thinks so. CL

M ENTAL HE ALTH

DEPRESSION IN TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS By G. M. Woods

It was talked about at the Oscars. Depression is becoming a large concern in our teens and also young adults. As society changes and we become more technologically advanced – teens and young adults become more isolated and glued to their electronic devices than at any other time in history. To have 1000 friends on Facebook does not translate into real caring friends. We are losing our personal interactions and connections. Crisis helplines and hospitals are becoming more important, however hospitals are becoming overloaded and anxiety clinics maxed out. I personally know of one adult suffering from major depression who has been on a wait list for an Anxiety Clinic for 2 years and counting.

DO YOU NEED MORE HELP? If you believe a loved one is in danger, don’t hesitate to call 911 or your local crisis line.

HERE ARE SEVERAL RESOURCES FOR MENTAL ILLNESS: • Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division www.ontario.cmha • Mood Disorders Association of Ontario

(Page the Crisis Intervention Team)

Public discussion about Mental Illness is in its infancy, however backlash of discrimination is what makes the dialog even harder. The negative stereotype of this stigma is alive and well, and that is what slams the door on help. The stigma shows itself in how people are treated. Society sees people suffering from Mental Illness as untrustworthy, unproductive, or just dramatic. In teens it is seen as just drama, but teens are dying because of this “drama”. Recognizing depression in young people can be more difficult because they are experiencing so many changes and many of them may not want to talk about their feelings. How can we help? Keep watch. Connect. Make the effort. Be thoughtful.

LOOK FOR SOME OF THE FOLLOWING CHANGES: Changes in Feelings. Sudden mood swings – all teens have mood swings but this will be out of normal character. Changes in Physical Health. Sudden changes in eating habits – too much or refusing to eat or unexpected weight gain or loss. Problems sleeping. Frequent physical pains – back, stomach, headaches. Changes in personal hygiene, neglecting grooming and even changes in dress and style. Changes in Behaviour. A teen could become withdrawn, have a sudden loss of interest in previous passions. For instance the star soccer player now refuses to practice or participate. Schoolwork suffers, skipping classes, failing tests and sudden changes in friendships or breaking away from friends. Changes in Thinking. Low self-esteem, self-dislike or self-blame – for example, they may only talk about themselves negatively. The signs are subtle, but the consequences are unspeakable. Interaction and connection are the tools to help keep our teens safe. If a teen is in trouble there is help out there, start with the family doctor. A mental illness diagnosis is not the end of the world – it is manageable, treatable, and livable. CL

he tulips are blooming, the days are getting longer, and the Easter holidays are just around the corner. Time to banish those winter blues and add festive, Easter-themed touches here, there, and everywhere-just in time for celebrations with family and friends. “Whether you're hosting a brunch, lunch, dinner party, or egg hunt, Easter is a perfect time for families to come together and get creative,” says Shelli Gardner, CEO and cofounder of Stampin' Up!, a leading papercrafting company.

” Sharing what we create is a powerful yet simple way to reach out and strengthen our relationships.” Spring is also a time for renewal, and what better way to bring a fresh, new look to your home décor than with do-it-yourself Easter-themed design ideas from Stampin' Up!?

How about creating a “pin-worthy” table setting for your holiday meal by decorating your table with handmade table place cards, baskets, flowers, and eggs? Easter-themed stamp sets, such as the whimsical For Peeps' Sake Stamp Set, and the colourful Petal Potpourri Stamp Set with the coordinating Flower Medallion Punch, will help bring these fun projects to life.

” Easter is a perfect time for families to come together and get creative.” Once the family has coloured and decorated their Easter eggs, present these wonderful treasures in adorable handmade baskets you can decorate yourself using the Berry Basket Bigz L Die and other themed embellishments. Gardner also suggests that you bring your own style to the holiday by packaging Easter chocolate party favors in handmade boxes or kraft bags that you can decorate with themed stamps, tags, buttons, flowers, paper, and vibrantly coloured ribbons.

Handmade Easter cards are another fun family project that displays everyone's personality and taste. These custom cards made with coloured cardstock and Designer Series Paper can feature themed stamps and embellishments that show loved ones how much you care.

Make sure to celebrate the arrival of spring with special décor touches both indoors and out. Enjoy the long-awaited warmer weather by doing some gardening work and dress your flowers and plants with charming personalized Handpicked Framelits Dies with accompanying From the Garden collection stamps. C AW T H R A PA R K SECONDARY SCHOOL Cawthra Park Secondary is a thriving school community. Our school is well known for the amazing talents that appear on the stage, in the gyms and on the walls – both within the school and in the community. However, our school is a very special place because of the “everyday”. As you walk through the halls on any day, you can see, hear and feel the welcoming, accepting and creative environment. Students can be seen working together on academic work, can be heard rehearsing for artist endeavors and athletics, and you will feel welcomed by the greetings of both students and staff. Our graduates are always our most vocal supporters as they move out into the world, knowing that they have been grounded as strong 21st Century learners. More than technology, this means they have the skills and empathy to work well with others in a creative way.
