THE 4TH ANNUAL PURPLE GALA was held at the Credit Valley Golf & Country Club on April 2nd in support of Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton. It was an enjoyable and interactive evening with poignant moments. DJ Manifest who is one of Canada’s more experienced and highly regarded radio and club personalities entertained throughout the evening. There was a photo booth, an amazing silent and live auction and raffle draws. The cocktail reception had cosmos as the signature drink and guests enjoyed the fabulous food stations. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Mark McAllister of Global News and Don Stewart was the Live Auctioneer. Ernie and Kathy Cavillin were presented with the H.O.P.E. A GUIDE FOR

GARDENE 8

h

ave you ever wanted to make a salad from vegetables you grew yourself? Or give a bouquet to your loved one made of fresh flowers picked from your own garden? Now is your time to shine and grow like a pro with a few tips to get you started:

ERS

RESEARCH While your first attempt may not be as beautiful as Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, it can certainly serve as inspiration as you begin to visualize how you would like your garden to look. Hop on the web, take a stroll through your neighbourhood or head to your local garden store for some creative inspiration.

TOOLS You'll need to acquire a few essential tools for preparing the soil/space, for planting your seeds and for garden maintenance: GLOVES To protect your hands from prickles, thorns and dirt, make sure to have some sturdy gardening gloves on hand. HAND TROWEL This will act as your best friend when it comes time to plant your seeds, excavate weeds and transport items from pots to your garden.

WHEELBARROW Investing in a wheelbarrow is a must for gardeners. You'll likely need to purchase some gardening soil to mix in with your ground soil. Having a wheelbarrow on hand to help you transport the soil from your vehicle to your garden is gold. >>>

9

outdoor living

GARDENING GEAR To be a true gardener, you'll need a few key items in your wardrobe: OVERALLS There's a reason traditional Carhartt overalls (available at Mark's) have stayed in style for so long. With room for knee pads for extra cushioning and multiple utility pockets, overalls are essential. FOOTWEAR You'll want to wear shoes that are comfortable and functional. A great option are Mark's WindRiver rain boots which come in a shorter profile and are antimicrobial to keep your feet fresh. Not to mention, they're easy to hose off after a day in the dirt. S U N H AT You'll likely be spending quite a bit of time outside so it's best to protect yourself with a wide brimmed hat in addition to wearing sunscreen. THN www.newscanada.com

School Life STREETSVILLE

SECONDARY SCHOOL March has been a busy and exciting month at Streetsville Secondary School. The day before March Break, Streetsville Secondary School had our annual Cops for Cancer Hockey Game, held at the Vic Johnson Arena. When the game started, there was standing room only - as staff, students, police officers and community members packed the stands. Streetsville scored first and held the police at bay until the third period, when Peel’s finest found their groove. They scored 5 unanswered goals and their goalie did an outstanding job of fending off the Tigers, despite many excellent scoring opportunities by the Streetsville squad. In the end, players and fans had a great time, and the event was extremely successful, with $2000 raised to support cancer research. We look forward to next year’s event and thank the Tiger Leadership Council and Peel Police for organizing.

For our parent community, the School Council held the first of a two-part parent information night entitled “Internet Safety, What Parents Need to Know”. The presenter was social media behaviour expert Steve Chapelle. Parents found the night very informative and are looking forward to the second event, which takes place on Thursday, May 12th at 7pm. All are welcome to attend and there is no cost; however, we do ask that children under the age of 16 be left at home, due to the sensitive nature of the material. In March, we also had Mental Health Wellness Week. Our student and staff planning team raised awareness about mental health and had a number of activities that promoted positive mental health. There were Zumba and yoga classes, relaxing adult colouring in the library, mental health awareness games in the cafeteria, and, every day at lunch, St. John Ambulance volunteers brought in therapy dogs for staff and students to enjoy. The week culminated in a presentation by Tammy Whelan from the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Streetsville was also proud to host Gagan Sikand, newly elected Member of Parliament for Mississauga- Streetsville. Presenting to several classes, he shared his experiences, the road he took that led him to politics, and what it is like to work under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mr. Sikand answered many question from students and staff. For more information, please visit the Streetsville Secondary School website, Facebook page, or follow us on Twitter @StreetsvilleSS.

IN CONVERSATION WITH CHARLES PACHTER & MARGARET ATWOOD 02

03

When Margaret Atwood was studying at Harvard, she had a dream about Susanna Moodie, a Canadian writer that focused on her struggles as an early settler. After Atwood’s dream, she started writing poems based on Moodie’s stories. ‘The Journals of Susanna Moodie’ is a book of poetry by Margaret Atwood, first published in 1970. In the book, Atwood adopts the voice of Susanna Moodie and conveys Moodie’s feelings about life in rural Canada in the 19th century.

04

Charles Pachter began illustrating the poems in 1968, when Atwood sent him a first manuscript of her book. The book was later republished in 1997 with a series of illustrations by Charles Pachter. 01: Margaret having a little fun with Charles and Bonnie. 02: Editor-in-Chief Joanne with her crew Eddie, Samuel and Emma. 03: Charles Pachter enjoying a butter tart. 04: Organizers Megan, Kelly & Lyndsay.
