HOW TO AVOID

INJURIES ON THE G O LF

COU R S E

this Summer

(NC) For even the best of us golf can be a frustrating sport. The precision, patience, resiliency, and mental strength required challenges even the most talented and level-headed participants. With that being said golf is one of the most popular Canadian summer past times and is enjoyed by Canadians of all skill levels. While golf will undoubtedly test our mental strength, it can be even more taxing on our bodies. The constant bending over, repetitive swing motion, and hot weather conditions take a physical toll. Here are some tips from the Ontario Chiropractic Association to help prepare your body for a round of golf and avoid injury:

FIND YOUR SWING It is very easy for amateur golfers to injure themselves by repeatedly doing an incorrect swing. Everyone’s swing is different, but it is important to work with a swing that benefits our game and body. Consulting with a professional before hitting the links will help develop our game and avoid injury.

and cushioning. This helps your back in both the short and long term.

PREPARATION Always make sure to stretch your muscles prior to and after a round of golf. We may be in a rush to reach the 19th hole, but it is important to cool our muscles down after a strenuous round.

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Wearing

CARRYING YOUR BAG Lugging your

proper golf attire goes beyond simply looking the part. Your playing partners will be intimidated when they see you strut to the tee box looking like Jordan Spieth; that is until you flub your first drive 20 yards right into the water. Wearing soft spike golf shoes gives you greater shock absorption

golf bag around the course adds a lot of unnecessary stress to your body. Elect to either drive a golf cart or else push your pull your bag using a golf bag cart.

HYDRATE Hydration is fundamental to success and safety in any sport. This is magnified when we are playing an outdoor sport during the summer. Drinking water helps decrease your risk of injury and fatigue when on the golf course. For more information check out www.chiropractic.on.ca.

WEEKEND DIY:

DO A DECK MA KEOV ER

quickly like a Pro ONE WEEKEND

is all you need to transform the look of your backyard (NC) All it takes is one day of work to revive some of the most tired or neglected outdoor spaces. Did you know, for example, that there are a wide variety of do-it-yourself products these days, some of which can make deck restoration so easy? One weekend is all you need to transform the look of your backyard – and it’s true that refinishing your deck can be done in just three simple steps: PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK SPACE

Wet the plant life around the deck then cover to protect against product run-off. Wear old clothes, protective glasses and gloves. Clear the deck of all furniture and decorative items. PREPARE THE SURFACE

It’s important to clean the deck first, according to manufacturers of the Thompson’s WaterSeal products. An effective solution is their Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner, but be sure to follow the usage instructions. These products should be applied with a staining brush and then rinsed with a garden hose or pressure washer. Then repair loose screws or damaged boards on the deck surface. APPLY THE SEALER

Allow the deck to dry from the rinse for a few hours and then you can protect the surface. Another popular DIY product for the job is Thompson’s WaterSeal Advanced Formula. Available in clear, honey gold, nutmeg brown, and natural cedar finishes, it can be easily matched to exterior paint or siding. To prolong the life of your equipment when you are finished, clean it thoroughly with soap and water.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE (NC) Times have changed. Outdoor living has evolved past the solitary picnic table in the shade of a tree, or a couple of folding chairs on a patio slab.

Since no one likes to sit on a wet cushion, consider protecting fabrics before this happens – and applying a quick and innovative spray product can do it. The Thompson’s WaterSeal brand points out, for example, that their Fabric Seal is a popular formula with a UV retardant. It protects many outdoor fabrics from rain and UV rays, including:

Today we live in the age of multi-level decks, sunshades, pergolas, privacy curtains, coffee conversation furniture and outdoor kitchens, all of it creating a warm and inviting area where you can relax and enjoy the warmer months.
