WHY WE NEED BEES When we think of bees, honey might be the first thing that comes to mind. But these creatures provide a lot than more just a sticky sweet treat and are incredibly important to the harmony of our ecosystems. Bees make it possible for us to enjoy many of the foods that we eat. One in every three bites of the food we eat is made possible by pollinators like the honey bee. Given how important they are, we need to help keep them healthy. Canada’s agricultural community has always understood the value of pollinators when it comes to feeding our growing population. That’s why farmers across Canada have bee hives on their farmland, so honey bees can be close to nutritious food sources like canola. The agriculture community has made it easy for Canadians to help feed honey bees. There are simple things can do like plant larger and more varied
gardens, with flowers attractive to honey bees; and plant a mix of seeds that will bloom throughout the season for longer flowering. With the launch of a new national program called Buzzing Gardens, Canadians can receive a free pollinator garden
seed kit by visiting www.beesmatter.ca. It’s up to all of us to help feed the honey bee. The Buzzing Garden seed kit is a healthy source of food for bees, and the pre-mixed seed packet is quick and easy to plant. www.newscanada.com

HOW TO MAXIMIZE
NATURAL LIGHT
in Your Home
A
dding daylight to your living space is one of the best things you can do to improve your home. There aren’t many other home adjustments that have the power to change your mood, your health, the style, comfort and design of your home than something as simple as natural light. Here are some smart ways to enhance the natural light that enters your home to make a world of difference.
CAPITALIZE ON WINDOWS Go with light and airy blinds or curtains, instead of dark and heavy textures. Translucent shades provide privacy while still allowing the sun’s natural
brightness to shine through. Even something as simple as remembering to pull back curtains during the day and give your windows a thorough cleaning can make a big impact.
FRESH PAINT COLOUR Choose a soft, bright colour for your walls to help reflect the natural light that comes in. While dark colours tend to consume the brightness of a room and give off a feeling of dullness and lifelessness, light coloured paint can actually radiate natural light that comes through. A great tip to maximize the effectiveness of light paint is to add white paint trim around your windows and an accent wall for a pop of colour.
PUT IN A SUN TUNNEL Sun tunnels offer an exceptional way to bring daylight into indoor spaces. While skylights may not work for the roof details or floor plans of every home, Sun Tunnels are easy to install and extremely effective for bringing light in. They work by capturing light on the roof and directing it downwards into a highly reflective aluminum tube – the light ends up coming through the ceiling of the home distributing light evenly throughout the space. Look for sun tunnels that are designed for reliability and performance like ones from Velux which have an integrated pan and dome assembly to prevent leaks and allow for condensation drainage. The more daylight you can invite indoors the better you’ll feel. Daylight is free, and it’s the ultimate green energy source. These natural light solutions are simple, clean and elegant home improvements that boost the beauty and brightness of your home without raising electricity bills. Visit velux.ca for more details on how a sun tunnel can illuminate your home. www.newscanada.com

PUT YOUR GREEN THUMB TO WORK WITHOUT A SORE BACK Weed out injuries while gardening Gardening has grown into one of Canada’s most popular activities in recent years as a growing number of us discover the pleasures and rewards of a beautiful landscape. But exercising your green thumb does come with some risks. A day of digging, weeding and watering can also lead to injury when proper safety precautions are not followed. Here are some steps to help prevent and treat common gardening injuries: Protect Yourself • Safety goggles and gloves shield eyes and skin from chemicals and pesticides and protect from sharp or motorized equipment. • Several hours spent in the sun can lead to sunburn and increased chances of skin cancer. Choose a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and seek a shade break between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. • While watering your plants, don’t Choose a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and seek a shade break between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
forget to water yourself. Drink plenty of liquids, but avoid alcohol or sugary beverages that can lead to dehydration. • Use lightweight hand tools with rubber handles and ergonomic designs. Tools with offset handles make digging and weeding easier. Keep tools maintained as sharp, clean tools work better and require less effort. Handle extenders and reachers can help reduce the need for bending, reaching and stretching.
Treating common injuries Even when following these precautions gardeners can still feel back and knee pain, bumps, bruises, scrapes and bites during long days of tending to their backyard haven. So it’s a good idea to keep a summer essentials first aid kit on hand to treat common injuries when gardening and for outdoor family activities: • At the first sign of pain or bruising look to a homeopathic topical medicine such as Arnicare gel or cream to help relieve muscle and joint pain and ease resorption of swelling and bruising. Try it for neck, back, shoulder and leg muscle pain, swelling from injuries, and bruising. • For skin irritations, Cicadermine, a homeopathic ointment can help relieve redness and facilitate healing. • For stings and bug bites, try Dapis gel for relief. It’s a non-greasy and paraben-free gel that relieves itching and promotes the healing of insect bites. • Don’t let seasonal allergies dampen your love for flowers. A non-drowsy and antihistamine-free medicine, such as Sabalia, can help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms. Keep in mind, these homeopathic medicines may not be right for everyone, always read and follow the label. By following a few precautions, you can make this gardening season a safe and pleasant one.
