EXPANDING
Outdoor Living Space
adds value to your home
ven during a challenging economy, the outdoor living trend remains popular as homeowners seek to add lasting value and functional living space under the sky and stars. Whether it’s a do-it-yourself patio or a professionally installed outdoor kitchen, the beauty, usefulness, value and ease of maintenance in outdoor living space is limitless. Extending living space outdoors is as old as time itself. “Creating an outdoor room is a natural extension of your indoor living space,” says landscape architect John Johnson. “By creating a space in the open air and adding elements like fireplaces, pergolas, water features and greenery, you get a very different feel. People want and need that connection to the outdoors.” →
ADDING VALUE Without erecting the traditional four walls and roof, outdoor living space can be easily added to large, small, twin or town homes. Enhancing an outdoor space with hardscapes adds value and can be adapted for multiple uses. “Homeowners continue to embrace the trend of maximizing outdoor living space, whether it’s an outdoor kitchen or patio living room with a fire pit,” says Lonny Sekeres, a landscape designer. “Real estate experts say that for every dollar you invest in landscaping projects, you could see up to a $2 return when you sell your home.” Do-it-yourselfers will find easy-to-install, maintenance-free pavers and segmental retaining wall systems are budget-friendly for patios, walkways, courtyards, raised gardens, fire features and wall projects. New construction should include plans for exterior hardscapes, and remodels can benefit from the advice of design-build professionals or experts from a landscape supplies retailer, says Sekeres. “There are so many solutions to fit any budget and need,” says Sekeres. “Permeable pavers allow rainwater drainage if needed, and retaining walls come in colours that complement any environment.”
AL FRESCO LIVING As a natural extension of the home’s ground floor, a patio expands a family’s living and entertaining space significantly. It provides a perfect gathering spot for guests and family who will be drawn from indoor dining areas to this enticing space. A popular trend is to expand kitchen space with outdoor grilling areas, stone fireplaces for cooking wood-fired pizza, or stone counters around a grill for food preparation. “Because the kitchen is typically the customary gathering place in the home, it’s a natural extension for family and entertaining guests,” Sekeres says.
WARMING ACCENTS A fire feature such as a fireplace, pit, table, pot or ring creates an inviting outdoor focal point as well as a functional spot for entertaining, says Sekeres. A half-circle seat wall or outdoor furniture around a fire pit or table creates a cozy nook, and adding a grill, pub set, chaise or settee can transform a patio into a lounge for gatherings well into the evening and late in the season.

KING LIVING | JUNE 2014
ADDING AMBIANCE Pathways created with pavers, stepping stones and permeable pavers can join both back and front outdoor living spaces. “New homes and older homes make good use of the longstanding porch design,” says Sekeres. “It’s easy to create a paver walkway linking the front and back or an outdoor kitchen to a lounge area.” Lighting installed within steps and along paths can also add a unified ambiance to a home’s hardscape. Adding decor such as pergolas, trellises and arbours covered with natural materials like bamboo or fibre screens is great solutions for privacy, shade or continuity of design. “There’s no limit to the hundreds of ideas to enhance your yard,” says Sekeres. “Many products are easy for the do-it-yourselfer with manufacturer instructions, seminars and other resources. Talk to a landscape professional, visit a home and garden show and landscape supply stores, or search the Internet for inspiration. Take advantage of the outside to easily expand your living space.” KL Courtesy of BPC

hat a pleasant surprise on a Sunday morning after church. A gem hidden in the quaint village of Kettleby—Dorio’s Kettleby Italian Bakery. A setting from the pioneer days with the fragrances of a small bakery somewhere in France or Italy.
Other patrons were coming in for fresh baked bread, pastries, cakes and mouth watering take out. This unique little bakery has a hot table and fresh Paninis (“sandwiches”). Seeing the fulfilled looks of these diners brought me back to simpler days of when I was a child.
The fresh smell of bread being baked and the aroma of espresso. Small town service with a smile, no end to customer care and appreciation. My wife and I ordered cappuccinos and I could not resist one of their decadent desserts.
An experience of tranquility and fine food! If you are in Kettleby, this must be a definite stop. No disappointments here.
Your new home doesn’t come with mortgage advice. I do.

The Sell: Homeowner of 270 Bennet Drive sells her The Homeowner: The Home:
$14,000 home for a little more. Shirley Ormsby, 85 years young.
A 1,395 square foot bungalow with a garage and loft addition on a 75 by 136 foot lot on Bennet in King City backing onto the King City High School football field.
The History:
Shirley and her late husband Chuck purchased this home in 1958 from the builder at a price of $14,000. They raised their family here and were very involved in the community.
Going to Mark et:
Shirley decided that she did not want to go to a retirement residence. She wanted to stay independent but realized she could not maintain her home and property any longer. As such, she decided to purchase a condo on the condition of selling her home.
Offer Day:
There were a total of 7 (seven) offers. The home was offered at $599,900 with the intention of selling in one weekend. The winner was a young family; they won the lottery at $755,000. It was a bittersweet moment for Shirley who has spent a lifetime in the home and her community involvement will be missed by her many friends and neighbours. Shirley wishes the new homeowners as much enjoyment as she has had in this home. Sad news for King City to be losing Shirley but great news for Schomberg to have such a wonderful addition to the community.

Lighter, Brighter
Summer Eating It makes sense to eat lighter in the summer. Simple, fresh and delicious - that's summertime eating at its best. Less time in the kitchen means more time to enjoy the bright delicious flavours of justpicked berries, peaches, greens and other vegetables. Chef Tillinghast got together with Chef Jeffrey Floyd, culinary academic director at The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, to offer these five tips for enjoying summer’s gastronomic delights.

Use that grill
Grill eggplant, zucchini, onions and peppers. Brush with olive or walnut oil if you like. Put veggies directly on the grill, use a griddle or wrap in a single layer in foil. Grilled peach halves and pineapple rings are also delicious.
Process produce as little as possible
The fresher the produce, the less preparation needed. "The longer the time between preparation and consumption, the more flavour is lost," says Chef Tillinghast. Try cutting up peaches and a honeydew melon, add fresh blueberries and a squeeze of lemon or lime. Serve immediately for an instant refreshing dessert. Cook veggies quickly by stir frying. Cut vegetables small. Cook briefly with olive oil in a wok or large sautÊ pan over medium-high heat (or put the wok on your grill). Add a little coarse salt and freshly ground pepper - it's the perfect side dish for a simple roast chicken, grilled steak or swordfish. →

Keep flavours simple
Allow the flavour of fresh summer produce to shine. Cut zucchini into matchstick strips. Combine with wedges of ripe tomato, finely sliced fresh basil, thin slices of sweet or green onion. Add a splash of red wine vinegar and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and serve on a bed of lettuce, spinach or other greens. Add feta or bleu cheese crumbles if you like.
Buy local and seasonal or grow it yourself
Summer brings locally grown specialties - berries of all types, melons, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, sweet onions and more. Visit farmers' markets and ask what's in season and nothing tastes better than tomatoes from your own garden.
Soup is for summer, too
For a delicious cold soup, peel and chop pears and apricots (or hull and cut up strawberries). Add a sprinkling of sugar and perhaps a little cinnamon or cardamom. Mash lightly with a fork and add sour cream or yogurt, half and half or milk - even champagne. Beat the heat with lighter, simpler meals - you'll feel better and have more time for summertime fun. rapes are in abundant supply throughout the summer, which is welcome news for those seeking a healthy, refreshing snack. They’re also a boon to the home cook: grapes provide bright colour, a sweet-tart flavour and a refreshing burst of juice to warm-weather dishes. Grapes also complement, enhance and balance many flavours, including salty, hot-spicy, herbaceous, sweet (such as honey and maple syrup), citrus, vinaigrettetart and many more. Their juicy and crisp qualities work well with other textures, too. Grapes are always ripe and ready to use - in a word, dependable. Added bonus: grapes are a natural source of antioxidants and other polyphenols, which may contribute to heart health.
