FINANCIAL
POSTRETIREMENT TA X PL ANNING
F O R T H E L I F E S T Y L E Y O U WA N T ost-retirement tax planning is vital to maintaining the retirement lifestyle you want for all the years of your retirement. But even if you’re already past the ‘post’, it’s not too late to implement tax savings strategies that work for you – starting with
these income-protecting objectives: • Always take full advantage of all the direct tax deductions available to you. • Keep your net income and taxable income low enough to avoid such potential pitfalls as the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback or losing out on the age credit and possibly the GST/HST credit.
In keeping with these objectives, here are some other important post-retirement tax-reduction and income-protection strategies: • PLAN REGISTERED RETIREMENT INCOME FUND (RRIF) WITHDRAWALS: Withdrawals
from investments held in your RRIF are fully taxable – so manage your taxable income by withdrawing only amounts that are required.
• REDUCE TAXES THROUGH TAX EFFICIENT ASSET ALLOCATION: Keep fully-taxable,
interest-generating investments inside a tax-deferred Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or RRIF as long as possible while keeping assets that are more tax-efficient – those that generate capital gains or Canadian dividends – outside your registered plans.
• TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF ALL AVAILABLE TAX CREDITS AND DEDUCTIONS: Don’t
forget the age credit for those aged 65 and older, the pension income credit and medical expense credit.
• Ensure that your monthly cash flow is not eroded by increases in the cost of living and that your investments will last a lifetime.
• REDUCE YOUR TAXES BY SHARING CANADA OR QUEBEC PENSION PLAN (CPP/QPP) INCOME WITH YOUR SPOUSE:
When your spouse has a lower CPP/QPP entitlement and is in a lower tax bracket. 08 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
• CONTRIBUTE TO A SPOUSAL RRSP: You
must convert your RRSP to a RRIF no later than December 31 of the year in which the owner attains age 71.
These and other income-protecting and tax saving strategies – like investing in a Monthly Income Portfolio (MIP) that can protect your income against inflation and generate stable and reliable income distribution (outside your RRIF or RRSP) and potentially higher long-term growth – will help ensure that you’ll continue to have the income you need for all your retirement years. Talk to your professional advisor about the post-retirement financial strategies that make the best sense for you. This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc. MAZDA
CX-9
he award winning CX-9 is the most expensive, best equipped new Mazda that you can currently buy with Canadian dollars. All dressed up in its top-line Signature trim, with LED mood welcoming lighting, Bose premium audio, Nappa leather upholstery and genuine rosewood interior accents, this CX-9 effortlessly transitions into a luxury class vehicle.
Voted the Best Large Utility on the market by members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), the 2018 edition of CX-9 now comes with (three row) seating for seven, an impressive new more fuel-efficient (and enviro-friendly) engine and an array of clever active safety features, in addition to Mazda’s exclusive G-Vectoring Control system. 10 LUXURY LISTED ■APRIL 2018
After my first run in CX-9, I was shocked to discover the new engine had just four cylinders. It’s a turbocharged 2.5 litre Skyactiv-G engine that’s engineered to basically mimic the power producing characteristics of a much larger V6 (and fooled me!), yet still retain the miserly fuel use attributes of a smaller four. Low engine speed power is juicy, strong and it reacts immediately to initial gas pedal inputs. There’s also ample power in reserve for those overtaking or merging maneuvers, making it a genuine pleasure to drive. Straight-line stability on the highway is excellent, yet the driver maintains a good sense of connection with the road. The subtle attributes of G-Vectoring are most noticeable when the road ahead gets twisty. The CX-9 has a more precise and stable feel through corners than a large and tall utility deserves to possess. The overall driving experience in a word is “confident”. Inside, the CX-9 was exceptionally quiet at highway speeds. Suspect that there’s some electronic noise cancelation wizardry at work, especially since the Bose audio people are recognised leaders in this technology. The cabin is upscale yet the layout is typically modern Mazda, with a large centre dash multi-function display screen. The driver has a choice of steering wheel switches, a centre console rotary joystick, voice commands or touch-screen control for many functions. The second row seats slide on a rail system that allows the CX-9’s cabin to quickly adapt to various seating or storage configurations. Headroom is tighter in the third-row seats and the entry/exit requires a nimble
maneuver that’s probably best left to the young, or young at heart!
and a superb 12-speaker Bose premium surround sound audio system.
The totally equipped top CX-9 trim levels (Grand Touring and Signature) include features like 20-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display with traffic sign recognition, driver-seat memory functions, an integrated navigation system, window sunshades on the (heated) middle-row seats
It’s not just content that makes the Mazda CX-9 special, its sleek design, attention to detail and quality craftsmanship that elevate this vehicle above its usual competitors. Yes, you certainly could go out there and pay a lot more for a prestigious brand with similar levels of quality, content and technical sophistication, but you don’t need to! MAZDA CX - 9 GT Price as Tested: $47,100 Signature Edition: $50,100 DEFINITION OF “PRESTIGIOUS” Someone or something that is very much respected and admired. DEFINITION OF AN OUTSTANDING LARGE UTILITY VEHICLE The award winning Mazda CX-9!

16 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
C
LEAN CONTEMPORARY & TRUSTED TRADITIONAL
are polar opposites on the design compass. Each has their camps & ardent supporters, but rarely do they agree on the essence of how to best express that “must live“ attitude that pure design indoctrinates in us. So, when a talented challenger dares to combine the old & the new, the vintage with the marvelously modern, eclectic Fusion is born. Romantic, nostalgic, and well travelled, the FUSION ROOM presents design that looks organic & evolved, a process in the making over many years and taste adaptations, for a truly personal perspective as unique as you; a home. The senses are challenged as special pieces are introduced to the commonplace, and the elegant rubs shoulders with the slightly worn. Rather than a manic mash up, the layering of the perfect and the preserved, provides a rich toy box in which to play with design. Remember, live with what you love. Deciding on a unifying colour palette is a must do first step, as the interest must be firmly focused on the individual elements and not on a drama queen colour scheme. Allow strong colour in art and fabric, and even define a wall moment for perspective if architectural support is needed in a weakly made room. To set the scene, add a great wallpaper from Cole & Son’s, I adore the… Strong spaces with original features or industrial character are great supports for FUSION. Exposed brick, raw beams, rough hewn floors are fabulous details that can command control when traditional meets modern. In a classic setting, good mouldings and the romance of hearth and history can easily accommodate the energy of modern furniture and the bold as brass behaviour of abstract art and saturated colours. In all schemes, keep the window treatments to a simple minimum, this avoids a claustrophobic feel and reduce accessories to either a unified collection (silver boxes; crystal candlesticks; action man figures) or an age related support for the prime piece of FUSION Furniture… think cousins, not clones. ▷

TOP LEFT: The Painters Chair, dressed in a rich waxed pulled-up ruby leather, is enhanced with a quilted back and ruby hair on hide highlight. TOP RIGHT: Lamp, Jewel toned agate wrapped in gold leaf. Chelsea House. ABOVE: A brilliant splash of colour, art available in custom sizes, Celadon.
I love the worn look, not shabby chic but rather more shabby sheik, BUT (and this a big “but”), too much “hand me down, thank you Mom, I found it in a garage sale” look can make any FUSION room seem like a consignment store and not the elegant escape of a cultured curator… think Mame and not mom and you should be fine. Keep textures tight and fresh, add high gloss finishes to the warmth of waxed leathers, & always, always mix in a strong metal or stone to round the room and add a little sexy to your seating. Look at your space as if you are photographing for resale; define those special moments in “around the room” vignettes that can stand alone as destination points. Think about your room like you were hosting a cocktail party ala Breakfast At Tiffany’s. If your sardine packed guests can find a talking point in every corner when the conversation lags and the glasses empty, then the FUSION Room is a success; CHEERS!!
Our Handcock & Moore Room manages to touch the FUSION hot spot with a bold use of colour over classic mouldings, to create a sensitive yet sensational backdrop to a true classic, The Chesterfield. The romance of Arched light, the lusciousness of deep shade and the explosive expression of modern art in all its abstraction, forms a dialogue that is firmly schooled in the classics, but cheekily well read in the modern beat of “of the now” rhythm. It’s theatre, baby and you’re centre stage. By repurposing a traditional furniture shape, the modern palette seems more mature and the hide rug becomes a classic staple far removed from the dorm room or ranch. Mixed metals offer low key bling to this little black dress of a room, and the art: bold, frenzied and free, provides the unexpected youth that drags this classic kicking it’s heals firmly into the present and definitely into 18 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
your future. Finish off the look with natural textures like linen, leather, hide and fur for a relaxed, unmatched, “we don’t by suites” appeal. Remember to layer your task and ambient lighting to create a perfect balance between shadow and light and accessorize with much loved books, throws and pillows, pillows pillows: yes boys, we really do need all those #@*+ pillows…

FITNESS
BACK IN THE
SWING OF THINGS 3 DRILLS TO GET THE GOLF BODY MOVING pring is here and it’s time to trade snow shovels for golf clubs. Are you prepared? You may have improved your technique by beating balls at an indoor driving range, mastering a simulator or perhaps graduating from YouTube tutorials to one-on-one lessons with a pro. But what have you done to improve the most important tool in your proverbial golf bag? I’m talking about your body.
A chain of joints travelling up the body alternating between stability and mobility. GOLFERS ARE ATHLETES Like any athlete, golfers need to train to win. Many TV commentators warn that strength training ruins one’s golf swing, but I’m here to tell you they’re just plain wrong. Taking a few hours out of your week to follow a professionally designed strength training program can only improve your game. As someone with nearly 20 combined years as a strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist, I hope you’ll review the following introduction to golf fitness and make it a part of your game.
THREE PHASES OF GOLF FITNESS 1/ MOVEMENT Pain and injury are the main reasons people prematurely give up their favourite sport, so before strength training, it’s essential to improve your joint health. Correcting existing injuries and imbalances prevents worsened and new problems, which means more time on the course. 20 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
2/ STRENGTH Now that you have your foundation, it’s time to build strong muscles through weighttraining. This won’t just improve your golf game but will let you better perform in all areas of your life. 3/ POWER Phase three is converting your newly achieved strength into power for greater clubhead speed. This is achieved by training the body to become fast and explosive. MOVEMENT DRILLS
I always say “the on-season is for going long and the offseason is for getting strong.” but the truth is, it’s never too late to start a training regime and get in better shape. Getting started is easy, you just have to commit to Phase One and get your body moving. All of my clients perform the following three drills over their training career. They will have you feeling strong and confident when standing over the ball this season.
1// CAT/CAMEL SEGMENTATION YOU’RE ONLY AS HEALTHY AS YOUR SPINE.
Start in a quadruped position with the shoulders stacked directly above the wrists and the hips above the knees. Move into a dome position (Cat pose) with the head and hips tucked under the torso. From here, the goal is to finish in an extended position (Camel or Cow pose) but doing so segmentally. Starting from the tailbone and moving slow, travel up the spine vertebrae by vertebrae until reaching the neck. The goal is for the spine to move like a wave. Reverse back down the spine returning to cat pose. This is one repetition. Repeat for a total of five repetitions.
more mobile, the fingers will stay connected. Once you have created a straight line from hand to hand, return the left arm to the starting position by bringing it across the body. Perform 5 rotations and repeat on the left side.
3// SINGLE LEG GLUTE BRIDGE THE GLUTES ARE KING WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR SWING. THEY’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR GENERATING POWER AS WELL AS STABILIZING THE PELVIS.
Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tuck the chin and pull the rib cage down towards your belt buckle. This will help flatten the lower back to the ground. From here push the knees forward in front of the toes as this will naturally raise your hips off the ground. Squeeze the glutes and push your hips up further, stopping when you’ve created a straight line from knees to shoulders. Without shifting the hips, extend the right leg while flexing the foot toward the body until both thighs are
2// SIDE LYING WINDMILL THIS IS A GREAT BEGINNER DRILL TO TEACH THE UPPER AND LOWER BODY TO WORK TOGETHER, YET SIMULTANEOUSLY INDEPENDENTLY OF EACH OTHER.
Start by lying on your right side in a straight line from head to toe. Place a foam roller in front of you, parallel to your body. Flex the left hip bringing the thigh to 90 degrees and resting the knee, shin and foot on the roller. Extend both arms out in front on you with palms together. From here, pin the roller down by pushing the lower left leg down into it and reach forward with the top hand. Next, while trying to keep the fingers on the ground, move the arm up and over the head in an arc. Exhale at the top of the arc and continue traveling behind your body, turning the head to look at your hand the entire way. Focus on pulling the left shoulder blade towards the spine/floor and keeping the arm straight throughout the arc. It’s more important for the arm to maintain its rigidness than it is for the fingers to stay in contact with the ground. As you become
parallel. Hold for 10-30 seconds and repeat on the other leg. Perform 3 sets on each leg. I hope phase one helps you get your golf season off to a great start. Next month, I’ll talk in depth about building strength on this foundation.

Q +A
ANSON WILLIAMS WITH
had the honour of interviewing Anson Williams, also known to millions as Potsie Weber, from the hit TV series, Happy Days. I found Anson to be a personable, outgoing humanitarian. He truly inspired me. - SUE LONDON
Q: YOU PLAYED POTSIE ON HAPPY DAYS, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY?
It’s not a favourite memory, because it wasn’t just playing a character. I was only 23 years old at the time. Now, it’s 40 years later and the cast has contributed to entertainment and social issues. All that was stimulated by Garry Marshall. He inspired all of us to not get in the way of ourselves and to appreciate being on this major movie lot. The show was great, playing Potsie was great, all that was fun, but it actually became a minor part of the experience. Q: YOU GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU WERE TRULY A FAMILY. DID IT FEEL LIKE YOU WERE?
Yeah and also at the beginning, all of us took the opportunity and educated ourselves. I think that’s 22 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
why we’re still effective in the business because we learned to wear many hats, we saw many other areas that we were interested in and we perused that. We didn’t get lost in the icing of fame.
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN?
I have five daughters. I have one that is married, two grandsons, four daughters still at home and that’s my focus in life. That’s a lot of work right there. My day is pretty much like everyone else’s as a dad, being a responsible parent. Q: WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?
I have been directing since 1985. I have directed and produced over 300 shows. If I haven’t been creating, I’ve brought in people to create problem solving products, within the last 20 years.
Q: DO YOU HAVE THAT WORK/PLAY BALANCE?
Q: WHEN YOU SUCK ON THE LEMON, HOW LONG DOES IT WORK FOR YOU?
I’ve never worked for anybody, I’ve always worked for me. Today, if my kids are sick, I’m right there. I may have 5 pages to write, but instead I finished the dishes because my wife was up all night with the sick kids. So, you balance everything. It’s about prioritizing.
It lasts 30 min to an hour. Everyone is different because everyone’s body is different. If it only lasts 10 min, take another hit, there’s nothing to hurt you. So, I did that for years and I never had the problem again. Then during those years, I had gone into the product business. I loved finding a problem and I loved creating a solution. So, I started researching drowsy driving. In 2012, the National Sleep Foundation did a study and at the time,
Q: WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HEALTH RECENTLY.
I almost died a year ago. I found out I had colon cancer.
Cast of Happy Days.
Q: HOW DID THE CANCER DIAGNOSIS CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
Today I am very lucky, cancer free and healthier than I’ve been in 30 years. However, it’s a determination, a mindset and living for more than yourself. I understand the importance of priorities and that was a wakeup call. We need to go back to the garden and go back to the beginning. Find yourself and find who you are. My family was almost poor, like lower level, we had a very small home with one bathroom. Deep down I knew I was something more, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Now that I’m older, I found out how important that tree was in our backyard, I never looked at it enough or appreciated it enough. It took me going on this huge road in order to get back to the basics.
there were 168 million drowsy drivers a year. Today it’s worse. One out of five people admitted to falling asleep. There are more accidents and deaths from this, than from medicated driving and drunk driving combined. If you lose 2 hours of sleep, it equals 3 beers driving.
Q: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE CHANGING CAR ACCIDENT?
Q: THAT’S VERY SCARY. WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT?
Many years ago, I was driving outside of Los Angles in the local desert, doing a shoot. It was a very hot and exhausting day. Driving home, I blacked out and the next thing I know, I was bouncing around in the desert and almost killed myself. I had fallen asleep for like 3 seconds. It was enough to get off the road. I’m so lucky I survived this. I didn’t crash, but it scared me. I called my second cousin, Dr. Heimlich, who created the Heimlich Maneuver. I told him my situation and he explained how the body helps the body’s sensory connection, basically natural ways to heal. He was a genius. He explained to me that when I’m having a hard day, to keep cut up lemons with me. If I start feeling exhausted, to bite into it hard and he explained how the citric acid would hit the nerve on top of your tongue. The automatic reflex reaction of the body is adrenaline and then you would feel alert. It’s no different than going to the doctor and he has his little rubber mallet and he checks your reflexes.
I called Dr. Heimlich and I said “because of this information you gave me years ago, I have an idea. What do you think?” I said, what if we get the right amount of citric acid, with the right amount of sour lemon, a little water and a little preserve for shelf life. What if we just put it in a spray gel? What if we just spray the middle of your tongue?” He said, “Yes! Anson! That would be twice as effective as biting into the lemon. You’ll save more lives than the Heimlich Maneuver. Absolutely do it.” Then we did. It’s called Alert Drops.

are problems with the shipping. If you go onto AlertDrops.com and write to the info e-mail, which is me, we can figure it out and get it to you. Q: WHO IS BUYING ALERT DROPS?
Q: CAN WE GET THESE DROPS IN CANADA?
If people go to AlertDrops.com, they can learn all about the product. It’s all natural, so nothing will hurt you. It’s very old science. We just found a way to make it civilized and educate people on how the body can help the body. There’s nothing in your system and nothing to screw up your sleep pattern. You can order them on our website and on Amazon, but there 23 LUXURY LISTED ■ APRIL 2018
People have found that construction sites in America have banned energy drinks and similar products and now they are buying alert drops. EMT’s, doctors, nurses and anybody that needs to be alert in their jobs are buying it. Kids are using it in classrooms before tests. Anybody that needs to be alert and clear, it’s great for. It suits your own body and makes it alert. No stimulants, no caffeine, nothing. Q: WHAT TIME DO YOU FIGURE PEOPLE SHOULD GO TO SLEEP AND HOW MUCH SLEEP SHOULD THEY GET?
I don’t know what time to go to bed, but you need 8 hours. Early to bed, early to rise. The other thing is to not eat past 6pm. Get a good breakfast, smaller lunch, tiny dinner, so your body doesn’t have to work. Q: CAN YOU SHARE ANY LAST WORDS OF WISDOM?
Be everything in life, be in life, don’t be of something and don’t hide behind anything. Take the time to find out who you are. Don’t get brainwashed in constant media. You know yourself best. Find yourself, take some quiet time and learn to meditate. Find who you are, you will find your own direction, you will find yourself and you will find your place. You don’t need all this icing, you need to find the cake. That’s the centre of who you are and what you are about. Dr. Heimlich always said, “we’re all going to die, all of us. The purpose of your living is to leave something behind that doesn’t die.” That’s what he did; he left behind saving lives. Leave behind something more, leave behind something purposeful and make your life meaningful. Make this place just a little better because you were here and let it continue on, to the hearts and minds of everybody you touch.
