DESIGN TRENDS C 10
• LU X U RY LI S TE D MAG AZINE
anadian design enthusiasts have one more thing to look forward to this spring as new outdoor trends emerge. Make your outdoor living area look as good as it makes you feel so you can take advantage of the season, whether you’re relaxing, playing or socializing.
Here, Debbie Travis, Canada’s lifestyle expert, who recently launched an exclusive partnership at Sears Canada, shares her favourite new outdoor trends.
“ No matter how much space we have, it
seems there’s never enough. That’s why it’s important to select versatile, space-saving patio sets,” advises Debbie. SPACE-SAVING PATIOS Multi-functional patio sets that save space are a go-to item this year. “When it comes time to put away the patio set for winter, we want to be able to stow it away easily and use minimal space. Sofas that have all the chairs slotted underneath or coffee tables that sit right on top of the sofa make it easy to cover and pack-up.” Travis suggests her Chelsea Conversation set, designed specifically for Canadian weather, available at Sears Canada.
EUROPEAN INSPIRED PIECES You can rejuvenate their outdoor living spaces by pulling inspiration from Europe. Right now, it’s all about sleek, modern pieces combined with rustic accents. “Canadian barnwood is very cool at the moment and quite popular in Europe. Consider using it to build an outdoor countertop or as flooring on the deck,” says Travis. ›››

MIX AND MATCH Mismatched is trendy, so mix-up accessories like throw pillows or tableware. “Tableware has also come a long way, and now it’s easy to achieve a fun yet sophisticated look with pieces that appear to be ceramic but are shatter resistant.”
“ Combine colourful, vintage
looking pieces with simple, modern whites or greys. It’s not only about mixing colour and pattern, but also old with new,” says Travis.
Travis recommends being adventurous with colour, fabrics and materials. Outdoor furniture made from multiple materials promotes a dynamic fusion between the indoor and outdoor entertaining space. Popular combinations for 2016 are wood and iron, stainless steel and teak or aluminum and wicker. More information and tips are available at www.sears.ca. www.newscanada.com

A worry-free season with THREE
S
ESSENTIAL
pring has sprung and it’s time to get outdoors. Before you rush to get some much-needed sunshine and fresh air, consider the obstacles that might be preventing you from having fun and staying safe this season. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) has some tips to ensure you enjoy a worry-free spring, and it’s as simple as remembering your ABCs.
VITAMINS
So how do you decorate one large space and make it beautiful and workable for all the things you need to do - eat, entertain, help kids with homework, relax and more?
CONTINUE TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN WITH VITAMIN A It’s essential to ensure your skin is healthy year-round. So just because you’ve gotten through the dry winter air doesn’t mean that you can stop taking care of your skin. One way to keep your skin looking and feeling great is to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin A. Did you know that vitamin A is a vital nutrient which promotes skin repair and maintenance? In fact, people with vitamin A deficiencies are more prone to dry, flaky skin. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin A in your diet from foods such as sweet potatoes, spinach and fish oils.
STAY ACTIVE WITH VITAMIN B Spring is the time for adventures and exploring nature. But this means you’ll need enough energy to keep up. “B vitamins” is a term that actually includes eight different vitamins, some of which you may recognize, such as riboflavin and folic acid. They help your body convert the carbohydrates you eat into glucose, fuel for your body. They can be found in a variety of foods, such as almonds, pork, poultry and whole cereals, but because of the variety of different types of B vitamins, it may be difficult to get them all from a few sources. Try a B-complex vitamin to make sure you’re getting the support you need to stay active from sunrise to beyond sunset. ›››

KEEP ALLERGY SYMPTOMS AT BAY WITH VITAMIN C Vitamin C should stand for vitamin “Classic” because every season, vitamin C proves to be a jack-of-all-trades nutrient. You’ve probably been taking it the past few months to lessen the severity of your cold symptoms, but vitamin C is also a natural antihistamine. Histamines are what our body creates when something triggers our allergies, an unfortunate side effect of spring. Vitamin C can decrease your allergy symptoms by minimizing the formation of histamines. Try adding some vitamin C-enriched foods to your picnic basket, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes and leafy greens. When making changes to your diet, remember to keep track of your intake of calories, fats, sodium and other vitamins. If you’re struggling to find a balance, CHFA recommends consulting your health-care practitioner and visiting your local CHFA Member health food store to explore your options. www.newscanada.com

5 Ideas for
BREAKFAST ON THE GRILL W
e tend to associate grilling with weekend cookouts and evening meals, but mornings shouldn’t be left out when it comes to these sizzling, charred flavours. Breaking out the grill for breakfast can result in deliciously toasty breakfast pizzas, perfectly runny eggs and smoky bacon and sausage. ›››

5 Breakfaston-the-Grill IDEAS :
1. Place grilling sheet directly on the hot grill. Then place your bread on the sheet and flip every once in a while to get grill marks and serve. 2. Crack eggs directly onto a Cookina cooking sheet and top with grated Parmesan cheese, fresh herbs, and breadcrumbs. You can add crumbled prosciutto, turkey or bacon on top as an optional ingredient. 3. Cook a fresh piece of salmon fillet on low heat until it flakes easily when pressed with a fork. Serve with cream cheese and bagels that are toasted on the grill as well. 4. Grill asparagus and top with your favourite cheese. Let it all melt on to your cooking sheet. 5. Assemble pineapple chunks, peaches, and nectarines on a bamboo kebab skewer. Brush with coconut milk and dust with cinnamon. High-quality, reusable grilling sheets like Cookina are specially made for barbecue cooking. More information is available online at cookina.co.

Essential TIPS for
BUILDING A
SOAPBOX L
with your
KIDS
ooking for an entertaining and educational project you can do with your kids? Ever heard of a soapbox derby? Back in the day, soapbox derbies were a popular activity among adolescents. The actual soapbox cars were typically made from apple crates and roller-skate wheels. With good construction and the help of gravity, soapbox cars can travel upwards of 45 kilometres per hour, so driving skills are needed.
Founded on the art of creativity and imagination, soapbox cars are a great way to teach your child how to build something from the ground-up.
Here are some ESSENTIAL TIPS to help you build your derby car: FIND A LOCAL RACE Conduct some research to see if there’s an upcoming race in your area that you can participate in. If there isn’t one in your area, rally your neighbours and organize a block race.
MAKE A PLAN Soapbox cars can take some time to build so start by making a plan. Draft up a list of materials you want for your car and start researching where you can get them. Plan to spend a couple days pulling together your desired materials and then... start building.
GET CREATIVE You can use virtually anything including bike tires, wooden crates or a steering wheel from an old toboggan. And the best places to find these items can be your garage, farmers’ markets or garage sales.
SAFETY Before you take your first test ride, make sure you have safety equipment on hand, such as elbow and knee pads, long sleeve shirts and pants, in addition to a bike helmet. ›››

EQUIP YOURSELF WITH THE PROPER CLOTHING You’ll likely be spending quite a bit of time working on your car in your garage or backyard. To combat the fluctuating temperatures during the spring months, make sure to dress appropriately. Try the FarWest Zip Off pant, (available at www.marks.com) which easily transitions from pants to shorts in a matter of one zip. Start your engine and make special memories with your children with this unique project. www.newscanada.com
