Seeds, the often-overlooked cousins of nuts, can boost nutrition in our modern, nutrient-deficient diets. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, which supports immune and skin health. Hemp seeds are protein-rich; chia and flax seeds introduce soothing soluble fibre and anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids to the diet. “In my 18 years as a personal trainer, I have seen this issue a lot,” says Mike Haddow, Personal Trainer at GoodLife Fitness. “I always tell my clients that what we eat for breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day, both mentally and physically.” Haddow notes that it takes the same amount of time to cook a meal as it does to place an order at a drive-thru.

“ It only takes about

10 minutes to cook a wholesome meal that will give you enough energy to start the day off right,” says Haddow.

Here are some of his tips to help them find time for breakfast each day: Choose high-protein foods that give a long-lasting feeling of fullness and promote muscle growth and repair. Eggs are a great option, and so are leafy greens like spinach and kale. Stock your pantry and fridge with ‘power foods’ like flax, blueberries and chia - add them to muffin batter or sprinkle them on cereal to pack a big nutritious punch quickly. Make recipes ahead of time and store them in the fridge or freezer for a week’s worth of fast breakfast options. Choose real fruit - fresh or frozen - to increase your vitamin and fibre intake for the day. When grocery shopping, bring a list of each meal’s ingredients for the week to increase your chances of making all of your meals at home. ›››

Flourless PANCAKES

with berry compote Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Skill Level: Easy INGREDIENTS • 2 Eggs (free range if possible) • 1 Ripe Banana • 1 cup fresh or frozen Berries of your choice • 1 tbsp Water • 1 tsp Chia Seeds • 2 tsp Butter or Coconut Oil QUICK TIPS • Make the compote ahead of time to save time. It will last for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. • As there is no flour in the batter, it is slightly more fragile than traditional pancake batter. METHOD Batter - In a small blender, puree banana and eggs until smooth. Heat medium sized non-stick pan over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes or until hot. Add ½ of your butter/coconut oil to the pan and let sit for 30 seconds to heat up. Pour in batter slowly and make 4-6 small pancakes per pan. They should be the size of a soup can. Once browned on both sides, transfer to a plate. Compote - In a small pot, add berries, water and chia seeds. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until berries have broken down and the sauce has thickened. Spoon over pancakes and serve. www.newscanada.com

here has been endless conversation around the unprecedented pressure youth feel to excel in sports. Instead of developing athletes at a healthy pace, the focus is now primarily on short-term success and winning. This paradigm shift and the pressure associated with it has taken the fun out of the game and leads youth to think that they are “not good enough” to continue. This feeling of inadequacy ultimately leads to decreased self-esteem and is especially detrimental to young girls, as they already experience a large decline in confidence during their teenage years.


The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity has found that girls become less active as they transition from childhood to adolescence. In their teenage years, 70% of girls are not active enough. What’s more, 60% of girls have quit sports and activities because of how they feel about their physical appearance. The drop-off rates for teenage girls in sports compared to boys is an alarming six to one ratio.

A

lzheimer’s disease is a progressive and degenerative disease of the brain. It was once thought that little could be done to delay or prevent it from running its devastating course. However, according to Dr. Chik Devaraj, an internal medicine specialist and geriatrician at Mississauga Trillium Health Partners, understanding whether you have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is a crucial part of delaying its onset.


REGULAR EXERCISE

“ There are things that can be done including Diet, Exercise and Mental Stimulation that help prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease,” says Dr. Devaraj. “A new test, called Alz-ID, can now identify if someone is at increased risk, which can help people determine the best course of action to help delay the onset.” In addition to being tested, Dr. Deveraj recommends the following for offsetting, or even preventing, the onset the illness:

According to the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation, physical exercise can reduce your risk of developing the disease by up to 50%. It is recommended that people get 30 minutes of exercise, five times per week. Walking, cycling, even gardening, housework, or any other activity that increases your heart rate is recommended. HEALTHY EATING Like your body, your brain needs healthy food to be at its best. Ensure your diet is rich with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats and avoid trans and saturated fats. Smoking and heavy drinking are two of the most preventable risk factors. In fact, smoking increases the odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease by almost 80% for people over the age of 65. ›››
