OPENPLAN to make
Designing Easy
I 10
ncreasingly, people are foregoing the traditional kind of home they grew up in - a warren of rooms separated by walls - and opting for open-plan homes featuring multi-purpose areas such as great rooms that combine the kitchen, dining room and living room. And, no surprise, decorators are devising new techniques to enhance this most livable style.
• LU X U RY LI S TE D MAG AZINE
So how do you decorate one large space and make it beautiful and workable for all the things you need to do - eat, entertain, help kids with homework, relax and more?
“ The key is continuity. And as some of today’s most talented designers explain, continuity can be produced in a variety of ways,” says Kim Kiner, vice president of design for window fashions company, Hunter Douglas. COLOUR To keep an open-plan interior open, designer Glenn Lawson says: “The number one element for achieving continuity is wall colour. Whether “warm” or “cool” you can use the same one throughout or paint moldings variations of the main colour, from light to dark.” He continues, “Large furnishings such as sofas and area rugs are most successful when they are colour-wise, ‘cousins’ of the walls - three shades of blue, for example. This way the eye keeps travelling around the space and is not interrupted by large disparate areas.”
FLOORING “When you have an open-concept living space,” advises Shea Soucie of Soucie Horner, “it’s important to keep the flooring material consistent so you don’t chop up the flow. You can make it interesting by laying wood planks on the diagonal, for instance, or by setting reclaimed European tiles in a herringbone pattern. Whatever you choose, make it the same throughout. “Then, layer your rugs on top to soften it, warm it and identify ‘rooms’ within it. Rugs are amazingly versatile. No matter what kind you choose, they add personality, colour, texture and style.” ›››

ART & ACCESSORIES All these designers use art to help create a beautiful home. In addition to art, Glenn Lawson likes to use glass, Lucite, polycarbonate and acrylic accessories. “They can provide sculptural interest without blocking anything, which keeps the interior open. Think glass coffee tables and ghost chairs. Their presence is beautiful yet implied, adding form in a subtle fashion.”
FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT
“ How you position the furniture is
crucial when developing beautiful, open-plan interiors,” says Whitney Stewart of Whitney Stewart Interior Design.
“Separate, but equally useful and good-looking ‘zones’ can be as simple as an entry table with a paneled screen behind it or as complex as an entire kitchen.” Even in small spaces, Stewart likes to bring furniture “off the walls” and arrange it “like clouds” for a specific purpose - conversation, reading, dining. She leaves an allée on the periphery to act as a frame, which “produces a feeling of lightness and airiness,” she explains.
WINDOW TREATMENTS “Whatever window treatments you choose, arrange them with an eye toward the long view, that is the entire interior not solely one particular zone, to further unify the space,” counsels Kim Kiner. Making this a no-brainer is the all-new PowerView Motorization system from Hunter Douglas, she adds. Its wireless technology permits operation with more than 36 different styles and configurations of the company’s window fashions for both horizontal and vertical applications. Once reserved for the privileged few who reside in lofts, open-plan homes are now available to everyone. Make the most of the abundant light and space they offer with a thoughtfully crafted design. You’ll never regret it. More information is available at www.hunterdouglas.ca.

WINDOW TREATMENTS can affect your mood
T
he overall ambience of a space sets the tone for how we feel far more than the individual decorative items. According to Kim Kiner, vice president of textile and material design for window treatment company Hunter Douglas, what directly affects that mood might surprise you. More often than not, it’s the lighting coming through the window.
18
• LU X U RY LI S TE D MAG AZINE
With so much at stake at the window here are a few of the popular trends she recommends to get the most out of the window dressings: MOTORIZATION Consumers today want a “connected home” with Internet-ready products that can be operated with the convenience of mobile devices. Have you heard of the Platinum App from Hunter Douglas? It allows users to create personalized scenes from morning light to movie night. You can control all the shades in your home with one click and time a scene with your alarm clock for a refreshing morning. The app is even available with a sunrise/ sunset timer feature that uses GPS data to calculate the exact times for a specific location.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY Everyone wants to live more responsibly. Therefore, products that offer enhanced energy efficiency to keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer are very popular. Energy-efficient window treatments are a smart way to conserve energy in your home. Duette Architella honeycomb shades for example, can help reduce solar heat gain at the window by up to 80 percent and heat loss through windows by up to 40 percent. And, the way the light filters into the room is beautiful. By conserving energy at the window, you can rest assured your cooling and heating systems won’t have to work as hard. The superior UV protection offered by soft, sheer Silhouette window shadings is trending with consumers as well. >>>
“ Whether it’s soft, filtered light or bright sunshine cascading through your shades, the way these rays enter a room can change everything.” - Kim Kiner

SOPHISTICATED TEXTURES Window treatments are not just about function: they make a style statement. And the beauty and sophistication that textures add at the window is getting increased recognition. From natural textures to exquisite textile weaves such as linens and raw silks, they create a distinctive look that transforms an ordinary window to extraordinary. Fabrics for Alustra Vignette Modern Roman Shades, for example, include a grass cloth texture with a subtle sheen. Whether you’re living in a new space and starting from scratch or want to update your window décor, these trends will modernize your home and add unique style. 9 Quick Tips to
PREVENT
FRAUD M
ost people believe that they are immune to becoming a target of fraud. But victims come from all walks of life. Fraudsters are increasingly sophisticated, whether they are operating online, over the phone, or in person - making it more difficult to know who you can and can’t trust.
24
• LU X U RY LI S TE D MAG AZINE
THE COMPETITION BUREAU ADVISES TO KEEP THESE TIPS IN MIND: 1. Beware of offers that seem “too good to be true”.
“ By recognizing, rejecting and reporting scams, consumers can protect themselves and assist in the fight against fraud,” says John Pecman, the Commissioner of Competition.
“During Fraud Prevention Month and throughout the year, the Competition Bureau works with its partners to help Canadians combat fraudulent activity.”
2. Be vigilant when evaluating ads, whether it’s for a job, a product or a service offered online, over the phone or in print. For example, if you see an ad for a job where you need to use your bank account to receive and pass on payments for a foreign company, or a promise that you will receive a percentage commission for each payment you pass on, it’s probably a scam. 3. Be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, emails, text messages or letters from unknown sources. 4. Don’t provide your information in response to unsolicited pop-ups. 5. When it comes to door-to-door sales, do not be rushed. Research the company, the individuals, the product or the offer and verify any contact and company details. You do not have to give them an answer at your door. ›››
LUX URY LI ST E D MAGA ZINE •
25
6. Be sure that you understand all terms and conditions of an offer of service or product before sending money or giving credit card or bank account details. Find the terms and conditions for any “free” trial offer that requires your credit card number. Often these can lead to charges that you didn’t expect. Inform yourself about renewal and cancellation requirements. If this information is difficult to find, think twice before signing up. 7. Shred unneeded documents like receipts, bank statements, old tax returns and even junk mail containing your address, such as credit card preapprovals. All of these documents contain personal information and should be destroyed before they hit the recycling bin. 8. Know that trustworthy businesses almost never contact you or visit your home unannounced to ask for personal details, banking or financial information. They do not do so by email, phone or text message, either. 9. Testimonials can appear quite believable by using socalled “satisfied customers”, “celebrities”, or “experts”. Be aware these can be fake. To report a scam, or to learn more about Fraud Prevention Month, visit the Competition Bureau’s website at www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/fraud, or phone 1-800-348-5358. Another helpful website is the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s at www.antifraudcentre.ca, or they can be reached at 1-888-495-8501. www.newscanada.com
