Barberetta Hair’s COVID Coif Project spent the day giving FREE OUTDOOR HAIRCUTS to Trillium Frontline Workers at Dixie Outlet Mall on Oct 17th. In COVID-safe fashion, Frontline Workers signed up at www.BarberettaHair.com and were designated an appointment window to maintain social distancing. Guests checked in at the cleaver hospital-like triage booth to show their ID and have a thorough health check before being sent to their own private haircutting tent - separated by partition, but open to the breeze. Each hospital employee enjoyed a fresh haircut by one of Barberetta Hair’s talented stylists. The COVID Coif Project donated $10 per online booking leading up to the event for COVID relief. In partnership with those keeping our community safe, Barberetta Hair offers 10% off all mobile services to frontline workers and their families. To book an appointment, call 647-261-1860 or visit www.barberettahair.com.

These uncertain times have not detered Imran Hasan, in fact, they’ve inspired him not only with his business ideas but also with helping his community. As Covid was shutting businesses down, Imran was finding a way for his business to be part of the solution. Think Modular Networks is a Mississauga based leading smart technologies integrator that has been collaborating with stakeholders including governments, institutions and businesses by deploying Thermal Temperature Screening technology, ensuring safer working and learning spaces. The Government of Canada mandated Thermal Temperature Screening at airports as an additional layer of protection for travellers. To learn more about these scanners visit www.ThinkModular.ca. Imran has also been working tirelessly to support many local charities and developed an initiative called #HoodStrong. #HoodStrong is designed to promote local businesses through the online sale of gift certificates while supporting The Mississauga Food Bank. Launched at the beginning of May, the purchaser receives 100% of the value while 80% of the funds from each transaction are transferred directly to the merchant and 20% of the proceeds benefit The Mississauga Food Bank. C OM O F OUND AT ION D ON AT E S $ 5 M ILLION
TO TRILLIUM HEALTH PARTNERS FOUNDATION PRESS RELEASE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN GIBBINS
When the pandemic hit, Max Cucchiella and his wife, Sarah Veinot, along with their family, gathered around the kitchen table in their Port Credit home to help their community. They started making non-medical masks with a clear vinyl insert in the centre, so that those who are deaf or hard of hearing and rely on lipreading could rejoin the conversation during COVID-19. The lip-reading lens mask, called My Access Mask, is continually evolving with a commitment to quality, innovation and design.
Demand took off and the family launched the Como Foundation, which today is announcing a $5 million gift to Trillium Health Partners Foundation with proceeds from mask sales. The generous donation will be used to support the redevelopment and expansion of Mississauga Hospital. The gift is the result of local innovation, benefitting not just those who are deaf or hard of hearing and Trillium Health Partners (THP), but also McRae Imaging, a local medium-sized business hurt by lost revenue as a result of COVID19. McRae is now producing these novel masks at a commercial volume in Ontario and is listed on the province’s Workplace PPE Supplier Directory. “I want to thank Max, Sarah, and the Como Foundation for their incredible generosity and leadership,” said the Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. “It’s selfless actions like today’s donation that show the true Ontario spirit and help bring people together in support of the community and our frontline heroes at Trillium Health Partners.”

THP is the largest community academic hospital in Canada, with over 1.75 million patient visits last year, including some of the highest numbers for births, emergency visits and surgeries. Over the next 20 years, THP will experience more demand for care than any other hospital in the province, as the area population rises and the number of seniors triples in the next 10 years. “Hospitals play a key role in keeping our community healthy in ordinary times, but during a pandemic it takes a whole community. Gifts like this one help us fight COVID-19, while also building for our future,” said Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO of THP. “Our deepest thanks to Max and Sarah, as well as their family and the Como Foundation for their generous gift.” Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of the THP Foundation, remarked, “We are thrilled and grateful to receive this gift from the Como Foundation to support our Mississauga Hospital. I hope other community members are inspired by their example of innovation, entrepreneurship and generosity.” While THP cared for one of the highest volumes of COVID-19 patients in the province, staff had to work harder because of the age
of Mississauga Hospital, which opened in 1958. A new kind of health care requires new infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology within a more complete, efficient and inclusive system. To help achieve that vision, the larger, modern Mississauga Hospital will boast significantly more capacity to care for patients while reflecting the best of today’s standards. The hospital’s expanded emergency, surgical and ICU capacity will ensure THP can continue to provide high quality, accessible and sustainable care in the face of rising demand. “As the mother of a child with special needs, I understand the benefit of these masks, and I’m truly delighted that they also allow us to give back to THP, where I have received life-saving care,” said Sarah Veinot. Her husband, Max, added, “It really just started at our kitchen table, where I kept trying to improve a mask for those with hearing and communications challenges. We all get the importance of excellent local hospitals, especially now, and I’m so proud to be able to give back during a time of heightened need.” To order masks, please visit www.thecomofoundation.ca

Halloween Harvest
AT B R A D L E Y M U S E UM Story and Photos by Peeter Poldre
Halloween Harvest at the Bradley Museum, sponsored by HollyFrontier and organized by the Museums of Mississauga, provided pre-registered family groups with a safe, outdoor educational experience. Each group was guided by a friendly Museums of Mississauga staff member as old-fashion Halloween and harvest traditions were enthusiastically demonstrated throughout the tour. Displays included harvest vegetables, old Halloween traditions, apple recipes and a display of honeybees. The tour concluded with a drink of warm apple cider.  A not-so-wicked witch gave each group a special activity bag filled with crafts and treats to take home. The grounds of the Bradley Museum were decorated with jack o’lanterns as well as the beauty of the autumn tree leaves.
