Pinball WIZARDS By Leslie Styles
Pinball lovers were in their glory at the sold-out ‘Beer and Pinball’ evening of January 10, held at the recently renovated Joseph Brant Museum. The rock-themed, playable pinball machines, on loan from Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, featured the Beatles, Metallica, Kiss, Aerosmith and more. The 55 guests made up a small enough group that each was able to practice and learn the machines, improving their game with each repetition, no coins needed. The evening was all about operating the vintage games, sipping on craft beer from Highlander Brew Co, and socializing over popcorn and chicken wings in the Lakefront Room. Door prizes were given and there was also merchandise and artifacts related to artists and bands.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from your Ward 1 Councillor! I hope everyone had a great holiday season with their families. Yes, those are all of my children in the picture above, so as you can imagine, my holidays were busy but with lots of fun and relaxing moments as well.

Having campaigned on a platform that was very Ward 1 centered, I was soon bombarded by the issues of the entire city of Burlington. Each Councillor is responsible for championing their respective wards, but we are all voting members of council and need to be familiar with the city in its entirety.

Robbie Burns
WEEKEND By Leslie Styles
Each January 25th, all over the world, the Scottish and other haggis lovers celebrate the birthday of Robbie Burns, Scotland’s national poet, with the traditional feast of haggis, tatties (mashed potato) and neeps (turnip). Ye Olde Squire in Aldershot held their annual Burns’ celebration with a bagpiper leading the procession followed by a gentleman bearing the haggis on a silver platter and two tartan-clad ladies who took turns addressing the haggis when it arrived at the bar. Diners’ at Ye Olde Squire had the option of a haggis dinner, steak with a slice of haggis, or black pudding dinner, all served with neeps and tatties.
We can’t always see the future, but we can definitely plan for the best possible outcome.

BURLINGTON’S FIRST 2020
KEY TO THE CITY VETERAN
Gordon Schottlander By Mayor Marianne Meed Ward Photography by Jessica Douglas Photography
On Saturday, January 11th, I had the absolute honour and pleasure to present beloved Burlington veteran Gordon Schottlander with the first Key to the City for 2020. Making the day even more special, it was during a celebration for his 95th birthday. Thank you Gordon, for all that you have done for our community and this city, and for your service to our country. Please see the citation below and learn more about Gordon Schottlander. Mr. Gordon Schottlander was born in England in 1925. On June 6th, 1944, as a commissioned officer, he landed on Juno Beach and fought bravely alongside Canadian soldiers as part of the D-Day invasion that would lead to the successful end of the Second World War. He later came to Canada with his wife Colleen, building a big and wonderful family here that now includes four sons, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He continued his contributions to the community once arriving in Burlington. His many accomplishments include President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Burlington Planning Board, serving with the Knights of Columbus for many years, Chairman of the committee that raised over $1 million for the local YMCA, and being named Burlington’s Citizen of the Year in 1968. He continues to make Burlington his home, living in the downtown core. While celebrating his 95th birthday in January of this year, he was presented with a proclamation and Key to the City for his meaningful and lasting contributions. For more Information, please visit the Key to the City webpage at www.burlington.ca/en/key-to-the-city-program.

2020 CANADIAN TIRE
National Skating FINALS Article and Photography by Peeter Poldre
Three new champions were crowned at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship finals on January 18th. 20-year old Roman Sadovsky landed three quadruple jumps to capture the first national skating title of his career. Ice Dance partners Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier captured their first title after finishing on the podium 7 times prior, but never on the top step. Emily Bausback won a women’s singles event that saw three newcomers climb the podium, while Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro won their second consecutive pairs title.

Spotlight Q& A
What type of clients do you typically work with?
Aldershot
FINANCIAL GROUP www.simplesmartadvice.com
What services does Aldershot Financial Group of ACPI provide? First let us explain that this is a very regulated industry. Under Aldershot Financial Group of ACPI we provide you with investment advice. However, your needs are much more than that. You need the security of knowing your unique financial situation is being considered in a comprehensive manner including not only your investments, but also your insurance, tax, estate planning and more. You need your questions answered! That’s what we do.
What is SimpleSmart Advice™? SimpleSmart Advice™ represents what we do: we simplify complex financial information and help you make smart decisions about your money. It also represents our investment philosophy.

NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
Our clients are regular, hard-working people whose lives are full of the events that most of us go through. That’s often when we first meet – after a life event such as the loss of loved one, pending retirement, the sale of a family home or business, the end of a marriage – when a life event prompts decision making. Whatever the life event – we’ve guided people through this before!
What are the benefits to working with Aldershot Financial Group of ACPI? What makes you unique? Our team of financial advisors include Chartered Accountants and Certified Financial Planner Professionals. We have the expertise beyond what is typical for other financial planners. You want someone who works for you, not for a bank, insurance, or mutual fund company… Canada has about 100,000 “financial planners”, most are trained to sell products, not necessarily provide financial advice. With three decades of working together, we have found a better way, one that absolutely puts your interests first.
WHAT THEIR CLIENT’S SAY... Can I retire? Stan, Age 62
After so many years it’s a little unsettling to give up a regular paycheque. The team at SimpleSmart Advice™ took the time to outline our cashflow for us. We were shown how we would receive our money from the various sources and when it would come in. They even estimated our taxes. It was great making the transition knowing exactly how things would work and that there would be no surprises. Everything went smoothly. With the SimpleSmart Advice™ team’s help we’ve settled into retirement quite comfortably. We’re really enjoying our new life!
Who do we trust? Elizabeth, Age 69
My husband died suddenly and I didn’t know where to start with all the financial decisions I now needed to look after. My lawyer recommended the team at SimpleSmart Advice™. They were able to step in when we needed them most and made sure we had our current finances in order. They helped me with the overwhelming task of gathering up bank accounts, insurance policies and investment information so that they could make an income plan for me. One of the joys of working with the SimpleSmart Advice™ team is their ability to provide calm in situations of chaos.
“The money we manage is not our money - it’s our clients’ past and their future.” - Eduardo Repetto
Walk us through what an introductory meeting is like with Aldershot Financial Group of ACPI? What kind of info are you looking for? We like to call it our “Consideration Meeting”. Consideration of your situation is always the first step. It is the way of giving careful thought to something and a kind and considerate regard for others. Even before any planning or exchange of information begins there are some basic questions to consider: Can we meet your overall goals at a cost you feel is fair? Is there a “meeting of minds”, a level of comfort and confidence that will allow us to work together over time?
With an ever-changing world, what advice would you give to families and individuals looking to make positive changes in their finances for the future?
It is confusing out there. So many choices, so many well meaning “advice-givers” and so much media “noise”. Don’t struggle with your finances and your financial questions. Seek advice. No matter your age or station in life, we can help take away a lot of the confusion surrounding your financial decisions.
What does the future hold for Aldershot Financial Group of ACPI? We plan on meeting more Aldershot residents and finding out their story. If we can help them through, around or over a life event then we will be satisfied. Our SimpleSmart Advice™ team is growing and we’re ready for that first Consideration meeting. Are you?
