THE FOSSMOBILE A CANADIAN STORY that needed to be retold
Article by Jason Stacey Photography from Foss Family Archives
If I were to ask you who invented Canada’s first successful automobile with an internal combustion engine, who would you say? If you answered Henry Ford, you’d be wrong. In fact, it was GEORGE FOOTE FOSS, a mechanic, blacksmith, bicycle repairman and inventor from Sherbrooke, Quebec. During a trip to Boston, Massachusetts in early 1896, George developed an interest in automobiles after riding in an early electric powered vehicle. Inspired by his experience and the belief that he could construct a more efficient vehicle, Foss began working on a four-horsepower, single-cylinder automobile. He completed his prototype in the spring of 1897. This automobile, later dubbed the Fossmobile, was the first of its kind to be successfully built in Canada.

Foss drove his car in and around Sherbrooke, Quebec for four years. He later moved to Montreal, Quebec, where the car sat idle for a year before he sold it for $75 in 1902. Foss had previously turned down an offer to partner with Henry Ford who went on to form the Ford Motor Company. He turned down the offer as he believed Ford’s vehicle to be inferior to the Fossmobile. He also turned down financial backing to mass produce the Fossmobile, citing his inexperience to do so.
Now, more than 124 years later, Foss's grandson, Ron Foss, a resident of Burlington, along with Legendary Motorcar Company in Halton Hills, are working to build a tribute replica of the original Fossmobile, thus recognizing his grandfather’s achievement and cementing its place in Canadian automotive history. “It’s a Canadian first that very few Canadians know much about and we felt it was important to get that story told,” remarked Ron. “The build of the tribute car is primarily to help tell that story.” Since the original is lost in the sands of time and no blueprints or technical specifications of it exist, the only references they have are the 19th century photographs to help tell the story which Ron has determined to be enough to reverse engineer the vehicle. “You take what you know,” Foss said. “If there’s a particular measurement you can determine (from photographs), you start with it, and scale with it to the next connecting part.” This project has been a labour of love for Ron. Overseeing the build, researching and investigating potential parts, drumming up publicity and monetary support from a GoFundMe page and corporate sponsorships, it’s basically become a full-time job. Once completed, Ron is working to have it shown in 3 or 4 major venues across Canada, with the ultimate goal of placing it in the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa to “bring to greater light this significant chapter of Canadian history.”

Capturing
THE LIGHT Article by Jason Stacey ◆ Photography by Bill West
@wwestworld
A sunrise. It’s nothing new yet we are always amazed whenever we get the chance to see one. For a photographer, capturing the moment when the sun comes over the horizon, and the light show that ensues, is photography heaven. A good photographer will capture the things seen. A great photographer will show us what we don’t see. Bill West is a great photographer.

“KNOWING THAT EACH SUNRISE HAS NEVER HAPPENED QUITE LIKE THIS BEFORE AND CAPTURING A UNIQUE MOMENT IN TIME TO ME IS FULFILLING ON A SPIRITUAL LEVEL. IT’S MY FAVOURITE THING TO SHOOT.” Bill’s journey into photography began while in his teens with the purchase of a used 1970’s SLR with three lenses. As he explains it, “it was a great way to start learning about photography basics.” Having three lenses allowed him to explore many different avenues including landscape, long exposure, macro and portrait photography.
After his post-secondary schooling was finished, and before an extended trip to Australia, Bill lent the camera to a friend and sadly lost track of it. Time went by and once again he started taking pictures however during this period he was a ‘cell phone photographer’, documenting the growth of his four children. “Over those many years thousands of photographs, categorized by year and season, were taken and when viewed now bring us all great joy and laughter,” remarks Bill. “I had thought for many years about getting a ‘real’ camera again and looking through my old photo albums one day sparked something in me.” So in early 2016 Bill purchased a refurbished Nikon D7100.

“THE CREATIVE RUSH WAS AMAZING. I STARTED TO LOOK AT THINGS DIFFERENTLY IN EVERYDAY LIFE AND WOULD ENVISION THE BEST POSSIBLE COMPOSITION OF THE SCENE AND WHAT SETTINGS I WOULD USE, IF I HAD MY CAMERA.”

From that point, an exciting learning curve ensued and continues to this day within the entire photographic realm. Over the years, Bill has upgraded his gear to include a Nikon full frame D850 and a smaller Sony mirrorless ‘travel’ camera RX100V6—both excellent at what they do and are used equally. Nowadays, anyone with a smartphone has the capability to take photographs but it takes a keen eye and knowhow to bring it to life. That’s where editing comes in and for Bill, that’s just part of the joy. “I personally find the editing portion of the process as intriguing and fulfilling as the actual photography itself,” Bill explains. “It is where the creativity captured is finetuned and brought to life. My true love of photography is the process as a whole—the feeling of excitement when
I’m out with my camera, capturing what I see and bringing it to life in post.” Today, Bill’s interests are very similar to his roots and have expanded to include commercial architectural among other areas. For now, photography remains a hobby but it is Bill’s goal to turn his passion into a second career—one from which he will never retire and one that makes travelling and photographing Europe with his partner a reality. “She reminds me that I need to look with both eyes when behind the lens. This not only makes memories but I honestly believe better photographs. Alan Watts sums it up well...
“THE SOURCE OF ALL LIGHT IS IN THE EYE; IF THERE WERE NO EYES IN THIS WORLD, THE SUN WOULD NOT BE LIGHT. YOU EVOKE LIGHT OUT OF THE UNIVERSE”—AND MY CAMERA CAPTURES IT.” •

The City of Burlington actively submitted an application to the Province of Ontario for the GO-VAXX bus to come to Burlington. The Province of Ontario operates the GO-VAXX mobile vaccination clinics as part of the province’s strategy to get COVID-19 vaccines to Ontarians. The number of available vaccinations at the mobile clinics is determined by the Province of Ontario. The City sought to support vaccination efforts by securing an appropriate local site to host the mobile clinics and share this additional vaccine opportunity with Burlington residents.
THE MOBILE CLINICS ARE ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO GET VACCINATED, but there are many other ways
to do so, including Halton Region clinics, pharmacies, community and paediatric clinics and doctors’ offices. Halton Region COVID-19 vaccination clinic information can be found at Halton – COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics. The City is also working with the Province to bring two walk-in, indoor clinics to our city early in 2022. Further details will be communicated with the public once confirmed.
