Safe for SUMMER

H

ello Friends and Neighbours

First off, I would like to extend a warm welcome to residents who have recently connected with me as well as to thank those who continue to interact with my office. We welcome any and all input on issues that are important to you and remain committed to keeping you informed on all city and ward-specific news. At the time of writing this we are still in a lockdown due to the pandemic but are showing signs of hope with case levels dropping on a daily basis.

The vaccination program has so far been successful and it would seem that the Federal government has figured out their earlier supply issues. I was fortunate enough to receive my first vaccine dose recently at Compass Bible Church in Ward 1. A sore right arm for a few days was the only side effect, similar to any

flu shot I have received in the past. I would encourage everyone who is able to get the shot. The medical information that we have been provided with certainly points to the vaccinations’ success at minimizing sickness and death from COVID 19. In addition, the new provincial framework for opening up our economy is dependent on the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated. I am personally eager to open up my business safely as are many more business owners and our economy needs to begin a long re-build. If we all want to get back to somewhat normal operations then we need to encourage as many people as possible to get the vaccine, including our kids age 12-17. Outdoor activities have been the first to finally re-open with golf courses, tennis and several outdoor sports now permitted to open with safety restrictions. I know the city was happy to have the Tyandaga Golf Course re-open as this very popular course was in high demand last year despite a similar lockdown during the early season. We as a family considered ourselves fortunate that the province recently made the decision to open splash pads and we were able to visit 2 of them in our community over the recent long weekend. In addition, we paid a visit to our beautiful local beach and were very impressed with how clean and pristine the sand is this year. Soon to be open are the newly renovated washrooms and boardwalk. Council recently voted to place armour stone and flowers over the pipeline that has been used as spillover parking in the past few years. This should help beautify the beach area. Our family plans to be regular visitors to the Burlington beach this year. Hope to see you there.

IT'S A BIRD! IT'S A PLANE!

IT'S LIL HEROES! By Jason Stacey

Lil Heroes is on a mission to spread the powers of hope, humour and kindness. Over the past year, seeing the world turned upside down by the global COVID-19 pandemic and feeling powerless and saddened by the grim news stories, Oakville resident Celina Ip began searching for something she could do to bolster people's spirits. "In particular, I wanted to brighten the lives of children who have been shuttered in their homes, unable to see their friends and live a normal childhood for over a year," said Ip. Inspired by the idea of the 'superhero' as well as the 'Random Acts of 10

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Kindness' movement, Ip determined to create educational superhero play kits for children. "Ultimately, superheroes are all out to save the world; something most of us wish we could do, especially right now during this global pandemic," Ip said. "But while we can’t fly or time travel or magically heal someone who is sick, we can save the world in other ways. We can do that by using the powers that we are all born with: kindness, hope, humour... to make the world a better place. That’s

where Lil Heroes truly stemmed from, my vision of inspiring the younger generation to channel and hone these innate powers to the best of their ability, to spread more joy and hope in our world." By February 2021, Lil Heroes was launched (online at lilheroes.ca and @lilheroes.ca on Instagram and Facebook) with support from Ip's family and friends, living up to the small business' slogan of 'Greatness From Small Beginnings'.

"We're a small business but we are mighty and we are working hard to make big waves within the local community - Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Mississauga - and reach others coastto-coast," said Ip. "And that's why I chose that slogan for Lil Heroes, to remind our young generation that they might be 'small' but they are mighty.

EVERYONE IS BORN WITH GREAT POWERS AND GREAT POTENTIAL, BUT IT'S UP TO US TO TAKE THAT FIRST SMALL STEP TOWARDS THAT BIG DREAM THAT COULD HAVE SOME IMPACTFUL AND POSITIVE CHANGE." The first Lil Heroes play kits were inspired by the power of kindness, humour and hope. Each play kit includes a handmade felt cape, eye mask and a few special tools (such as Kindness Cards) that Ip hopes will instill kids with the confidence to be real-world superheroes, ready to spread some positivity among their family, friends and neighbours. "By putting on their superhero cape and mask, having their super sidekick (a stuffed animal or a pet!) tag along and using the tools in their kit, kids can begin spreading positivity (hope, humour, kindness) in the world — to make someone smile, make someone laugh and brighten someone's day!" said Ip.

THIS JUNE, LIL HEROES WILL BE RELEASING A NEW CANADIANA-THEMED PLAY KIT IN ANTICIPATION OF CANADA DAY. "This kit will focus on promoting 'Pride' — to teach kids about the importance of being proud of one's roots, proud of one's history, and being proud to be Canadian," Ip said. You can check out Lil Heroes on Facebook and Instagram at @lilheroes.ca and on the web, where you can place an order, at lilheroes.ca. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Q: INTERESTING. WHAT WAS YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE LIKE WITH "BUSHY" HAIR?

We recently sat down with award-winning author, Peta-Gaye Nash to discuss family, writing and her latest story, Bushyhead, available on Amazon. Q: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BOOK, BUSHYHEAD. TALK TO US ABOUT THE BOOK AND WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WRITE THIS STORY? Thank you very much. I’m passionate about this story and the important messages in it. I believe the story helps instill self-esteem and a sense of self-worth in children. Children need to know they are valuable people just as they are. A few years ago my father nicknamed 12

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

my youngest daughter Bushyhead when she went to Jamaica one summer. She was running in the garden with her wild, curly hair fanning out in all directions. We thought her hair was simply glorious and I wanted to ensure that my daughter had a completely different experience with her hair than I did growing up.

I was surrounded by societal messages that straight hair was better and those messages are still in force today. My hair was chemically straightened by age 11. The message I got was that curly hair needed fixing. It needed to be tamed, straightened. I stopped chemically straightening my hair when I was in my twenties and then I stopped using a flat iron a few years ago. Since releasing Bushyhead and my blog post about why I wrote the story, many women have contacted me about their own struggles with their curly hair and the negative comments people have made. Not long ago, I heard that my nieces were teased at school and told they couldn’t be princesses because princesses didn’t have curly hair, I knew this was going to be a book. When my daughter Meadow was told she had doo doo hair and other negative comments, I felt I had a duty to write this story. The book is about embracing the hair on your head, whatever hair it might be. The character in 'Bushyhead', Miranda May, doesn’t always love her hair. Her bald father keeps telling her to be glad she has hair. The father in the book is based on my husband who is bald who is always saying just that, “be glad you have hair”. Then when my niece Jisele donated her curly hair to make wigs for children, I knew I had the full story. I was really proud when my daughter Meadow also donated her hair. She said the book inspired her to do it.

Q: YOU'VE WRITTEN 7 CHILDREN'S BOOKS TO DATE. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT WRITING AND ABOUT YOURSELF OVER THAT TIME? I’ve learned that I can overcome self-doubt. I wrote these books for a reason: to share valuable lessons with other parents and children. In Essie Wants an Education, Essie the squirrel learns to cross the street safely. My own son ran across the road when he was very young. I thought that other parents could read this story to their kids and the kids would remember Essie the squirrel, how amazed she was when she learned that you have to look both ways and be careful when crossing the road so that they would be careful and be safe. That’s important for all of us parents, to know our children will make wise decisions about their own safety. With my book Juliet Malevolent, Juliet is born into a world where everyone is evil but she wants to be kind and compassionate to her friends. That’s the message right there. The world may be one way, but you can be different. You can be caring, thoughtful and forgiving. Every time I feel reluctant to promote the books, I remind myself that I’m not only doing this for myself and my family, I’m doing this for other parents and children. I’m doing this to make our world better. I love these books and the lessons they teach - about having manners and spending time with family. Learning through stories is one of the best way to learn. I hope kids think my characters are memorable and learn from them.

Q: YOU ARE MARRIED WITH FOUR KIDS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND THE ROLE THEY’VE PLAYED IN YOUR WRITING CAREER? I’m incredibly lucky to be married to someone who supports my writing. Sometimes when I’m writing for over an hour and I hear him doing all the things that need to be done (cooking, laundry, looking after the children), I feel guilty. I feel like I’m not doing my part. I become consumed with this guilt for not being the perfect wife and mother, which becomes a distraction and then I can’t produce. Thankfully, my husband Dominique always reminds me to focus and that all the other stuff can wait. Plus, he’s a fantastic editor, catching both typos and story flow. Without my children, I wouldn’t have these children’s stories. At one time when they were all very young, I used to get frustrated

and think my family life and the demands of being a mother were preventing me from accomplishing my goals as a writer. I’ve since learned that the only person preventing me from anything is myself with those negative thoughts that tell me I can’t do it, it will take too long or it’s not worth the effort. Now I know better. If I have those thoughts, that’s okay but they won’t prevent me from taking action and putting in the time. As a matter of fact, my greatest accomplishment has been the raising of my four children. I’m sure parents out there will agree with me when I say that raising a family is one of the hardest things we’ll ever do. There are challenges at every stage.

About Peta-Gaye Nash Peta-Gaye Nash never imagined herself as a children’s author and it wasn’t until she had children of her own that she began writing stories. Born in Jamaica, she lived and travelled all around the world and now calls Canada home. All of her stories have important messages like road safety, being yourself and the importance of education. In 2015, Peta-Gaye won the Marty Awards for Emerging Literary Art and in 2013, got an honourable mention for the same award. She currently teaches English as a Second Language during the day and writes at night. petagayenash.com NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Watermelon

REFRESHER

FOR A 'SPIKED' RECIPE add an ounce of gin, vodka or St. Germaine elderflower liqueur (my favourite).

DIRECTIONS STEP 1: Cut the watermelon in half, and then take one piece and cut it in half again.

Prep Time: 10 minutes ı Serves: 6

INGREDIENTS 1 small seedless watermelon (pixie is a good variety for this) 7 cups of water 2 tbsp honey (optional) 1 lime Mint sprigs for ganish 14

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

STEP 2: With the quarter pieces, cut away the rind and put the flesh into a blender with the water and add the honey (if using). Blend until liquid is opaque and no chunks remain. STEP 3: Strain into a pitcher, add ice, a few slices of lime and some mint, and serve. NOTE: If you don’t drink it all at once, remove the lime after a few hours, or the bitterness of the rind will seep into your juice.
