This year’s annual Purple Gala went virtual! Held on March 28th, all guests attended this event from the comfort of thier own home.
This year’s signature theme was Dancing Through the Pandemic which included a silent auction and dance lessons from Arthur Murray Dance Studio. The Ballet inspired Henrietta the Hippo was also available for purchase during the evening. All funds raised through this event went directly to their educational programs and counselling services which are offered free of charge to people with epilepsy, their families and caregivers. March 26th was Purple Day and many landmarks all over the world were lit up in purple. Epilepsy South central Ontario has a new home in beautiful Port Credit. Check out their website for information about their next amazing, not to be missed event The Culinary Showdown being held in November www.epilepsysco.org.

Jardine's ETHAN Article by The Compass Food Bank
This month we are thrilled to share a delicious chili recipe submitted for The Compass’s upcoming cookbook by an amazing young Compass client named Ethan, with help from his mom Margaret Hodgson. 7-year-old Ethan is in grade 2 at Riverside Public School in Port Credit, which is where he first tried this yummy chili. School principal, Mr. Jardine shared some of his lunch with Ethan who loved it so much that he asked his mom to make it. She contacted Mr. Jardine who happily shared the recipe.
Ethan’s mom Margaret regularly makes the dish, which they call "Jardine’s Chili" named after Mr. Jardine. Ethan says the secret ingredient is salsa, which makes it taste 'really good' especially with some fresh bread on the side.
MAKES 4-6 Servings
INGREDIENTS • 1 lb Ground Beef • 1 small bag of Carrots, finely chopped • 2 Red Peppers, finely chopped • 1 can Black Beans, drained • 1 can Red Kidney Beans, drained • 1 bag Spinach, chopped • 1-2 tsp Chili Powder • 1 jar PC White Corn & Black Bean salsa
DIRECTIONS
Margaret, along with Ethan and his two siblings, Piper 9 and Landon 6 have been accessing the services of The Compass for five years. All three kids are attending school virtually this year and each Monday on their lunch break they walk together to The Compass to pick up their groceries. They miss the days before COVID when they could come inside to chat with other clients in the café.
STEP 1: Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked.
▶ THE COMPASS COOKBOOK WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS SPRING! Place your orders today by emailing cookbook@thecompass.ca
STEP 3: Simmer until vegetables are tender (about 20 minutes.) Add salt and pepper to taste.

STEP 2: In a pot over medium-low heat, combine all of the ingredients.

FOOD DRIVE Article by Susan Gibbins ■ Photography by Peeter Poldre

There was a steady stream of cars for the first ever SPRING FOOD DRIVE at the Mississauga Food Bank offices on Saturday, April 3rd.
The contactless drive-thru Spring Food Drive complimented the growing season and sponsor Scotts Canada was not only giving out thank you gifts of a growing kit to every supporter but they also matched, dollar or dollar, the first $10,000 donated to provide twice as many meals to hungry neighbours in Mississauga. Shelita helped direct cars to the back of the building where more volunteers were on hand to empty the cars and Ailzeh waved them a grateful goodbye.
THE MISSISSAUGA FOOD BANK SPRING FOOD DRIVE IS HELPING RAISE $200,000 AND 150,000 LBS OF FOOD THIS SPRING SEASON. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA
