Greatly facilitated by an outpouring of community support, The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre has successfully relocated. The team is excited about opportunities that our new purpose-built facility presents, as it will enable improved support for the vulnerable served.

A NEW FOREVER FOR THE HOME

By The Compass Advocacy Team

The new location, at 427 Lakeshore Rd East in Port Credit, is on one floor with different areas oriented to facilitate workflow. This should enable the team to offer an even more welcoming atmosphere for clients. I refer to it as a “forever home” in the title as, with renewal options we aim to be there for 25 years or for as long as we are needed. The key point in this notion of “forever” is that we have a stable location which will allow The Compass to plan for the long term. Our landlord at 427 Lakeshore is Indwell. Indwell creates and operates deeply affordable, supportive housing facilities and are well established in several communities in Southern Ontario. Next door to the Compass’s new location, in the same building, at 425 Lakeshore Rd East, Indwell operates Lakeshore Lofts. There are 68 units that are now “forever homes” 6

Compass for persons that were previously experiencing precarious housing situations or no housing at all.

In a comfortable community, such as Lorne Park, many marvel at their blessings; Pleased that the fruits of hard work and good choices have wrought a comfortable existence. To have less must be the result of a sub optimal approach to life and decision making. The notion of precarious housing, or homelessness, seems alien to a well-endowed existence. It is easy to be blind to the fact that there are many among us who experience food insecurity and precarious housing. We do not often see them, nor do we look for them. People experiencing economic hardship do not look different. They are hard to see and typically do not advertise their circumstances. We are all aware, at some level, that there is a housing affordability

issue. The cost of shelter drives food insecurity and precarious housing. Our free-market economy has, overall, netted great gains for society yet the gains have not been equitably shared. This is not the result of any great conspiracy. It is just how things have evolved. Shelter costs are a classic case of a reaction to the realities of supply and demand. There is no single ready-made solution to stimulating the supply side of housing. There needs to be a multi faceted, coordinated response by all levels of government. We are blessed to live in a country where, broadly speaking, the elected officials enact policies and legislation desired by the electorate. The political will to change starts in the hearts and minds of us all. Examine the platforms of political candidates for every level of government office and “Be the Change”. Look for initiatives that address housing that are pragmatic, suitable for a market economy and fair for all. Be a “YIMBY” (Yes in my back yard). Communities of mixed socio-economic strata are vibrant and healthy and desirable places to live. Food for Thought.

Women making a difference in Mississauga Article by Xanthe LeBlanc

Last year, a new chapter of the 100 Who Care Alliance, a global giving collective, launched — 100 Women Who Care Mississauga. Under the guidance and leadership of Christine Hull, owner of Christine Hull and Associates and Founder of the Mississauga and Area Women in Business (MAWB) networking group, and her Steering Team, the group’s goal is to collectively donate $30,000+ to local Mississauga charities every year. 100 Women Who Care Mississauga is a community group with a goal of effecting important change at the community level through what they call the #ThePowerof100. When joining, members each commit to donating $300 a year in increments of $100 donations made three times a year. Members are allowed to nominate their favourite Mississauga8

based charities that have an immediate, specific need, and after careful vetting, three charities are chosen at random to present their need at a Giving Circle meeting. After the charities have presented, the members vote and the charity with the most votes is awarded the entire collective donation. In 2021, as they were building their membership, The

DAM was awarded $9,100, and EveryMind was awarded $9,000. The goal is to donate $10,000 or more at every meeting, with the idea that, while $100 is useful, $10,000 can solve a problem. 100 Women Who Care Mississauga doesn’t collect any money—100% of donations collected go to the chosen charity. 100 Women Who Care Mississauga is currently looking to grow their membership so they can have an even bigger impact with their donations. If you’re interested in becoming a member or learning more, you can find them at 100womenwhocaremississauga.com. If you have questions, you can reach them at info@100womenwhocaremississauga. com. Saturday, March 26th saw the 15th Annual Dancing For The Compass event return to the Port Credit Legion with style and elegance that’s Little Peter and The Elegants, actually. In respect of keeping everyone Covid-safe, only 150 tickets were sold although the venue could easily hold 250 as it has in years past. Everyone was checked at the door for proof of vaccinations and masks were mandated unless you were seated at your table. Dancers could choose to wear masks while dancing or not. With a beautiful raffle table set out and a cash bar, Little Peter and The Elegants took to the stage at 8pm sharp and rocked the house until midnight. Peter Toller, aka Little Peter, opened the festivities with a beautiful monologue asking everyone to note the blue and yellow colourscheme of the tablecloths and decorations, as well as the lettermen sweaters the band wore in support of Ukraine who is still under fire at the time this article was written. Heads were bowed and a very touching moment of silence

took place. Peter introduced some of the Board members and staff from The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre and asked everyone to please check out the raffle table to support The Compass. The Ladies Auxiliary provided four types of single-packaged sandwiches for the attendees to choose from along with bags of chips to munch on. Dancing to the band sure worked up quite an appetite. By the end of the night almost everyone was still on the dance floor until the band said “Adieu” until next time. All proceeds from the event and the raffle were donated to The Compass to help support our neighbours experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. To learn more about Little Peter and The Elegants and see where they’re performing in 2022, please go to their website at www.littlepeterandtheelegants.com To learn more about The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre and what you can do to help, go to www.thecompass.ca. 12
