Carmen Corbasson Community Centre Renovation Mississauga.ca
On June 20, 2022, the Carmen Corbasson Community Centre will close to the public for renovations. The closure marks the start of a two-year renovation project for the Ward 1 community centre. Construction is set to begin the first week of July. The project includes renovating and building a new addition that will improve the quality of recreation services, implementing higher accessibility and green building standards to improve energy efficiency and savings, and reducing the City’s carbon footprint. “Renovating Carmen Corbasson Community Centre is part of our efforts to enhance the recreation programs and services that we offer to our community members,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “We’re committed to improving facility sustainability, accessibility and safety features while also providing the top-quality programming that the City of Mississauga has become known for. We look forward to welcoming back residents once renovations are complete.”

The community centre will reopen in fall 2024. Once completed, the renovated facility will include:
• A fitness centre with cardio machines, weights and fitness studio with wood sprung floor • A new aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a warm water therapy pool • A new multi-purpose space • Enhancements to existing multipurpose spaces • Renovations to the indoor arena • Improved connections to the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre • Improved sustainable and accessible design standards “The Carmen Corbasson Community Centre has been a staple in the Ward 1 community for more than 40 years,”
said Stephen Dasko, Ward 1 Councillor. “It’s exciting to see the vision for this beloved facility become a reality as the renovation begins.” This redevelopment was recommended and approved as part of the City’s 2019 Recreation Master plan, which was informed through extensive community consultation. “The Carmen Corbasson Community Centre underwent an extensive renovation about 20 years ago,” said Kristina Zietsma, Director, Recreation. “This much-needed redevelopment project is addressing aging infrastructure and will also offer much more in the way of services, programs and activities for Ward 1 and beyond.” Although the facility closure is scheduled for June 20 many services will continue to be available at community facilities throughout the City. All aquatic programming at Cawthra Park Secondary School will continue as normal through the redevelopment. The Mississauga Seniors’ Centre will remain open. Site access during the renovation will change to allow for the construction zone to be secured. To learn more about the renovation, visit mississauga.ca/carmenredevelop for updates.

DECONSTRUCTED FRUIT TART Prep Time: 1 hour ı Serves: 8
For this recipe you will need a 12” cast iron skillet.
INGREDIENTS • 1 bag (600 g) of mixed frozen fruit (I used the mango, strawberry, peach) • Butter puff pastry (1 sheet) from a 450 g package • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 2/3 cup brown sugar • 1 tsp cinnamon • 2 tbsp milk • 1 tbsp demerara sugar
DIRECTIONS STEP 1: Preheat oven to 425°. Take one roll of pastry from the package. Let it rest at room temperature for about 20 minutes. STEP 2: Meanwhile, combine the frozen fruit in a bowl with the lemon juice, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Stir to combine and then pour into a 10” cast iron skillet. STEP 3: The puff pastry can now be taken out of the package and carefully unrolled. It should still be somewhat frozen and not completely thawed. Once it is unrolled, cut it in half. Place the two halves on top of one another, then cut in half again. Repeat this step two more times. STEP 4: You will need to separate the pastry stacks for easier cutting, but eventually you want to end up with 16 little stacks about 1 ½” square. Place them on top of the fruit in the skillet, randomly in the pan, and careful not to push them too deep into the fruit. STEP 5: Brush a bit of milk on the tops of the pastry and sprinkle with the demerara sugar. STEP 6: Bake on middle rack in preheated 425’ oven for 25 mins, and then reduce heat to 375’ and continue baking for another 20-25 mins, or until pastry has puffed and the edges are looking crisp, and fruit is bubbling. Let cool on a rack for about 10 mins before serving. Option to add a dollop of ice cream! Enjoy!

On April 10th, the Raptors 905 season came to a disappointing end as they fell one win short of making the G League Finals, losing to the Delaware Blue Coats 143-139. Despite the heartbreak, it was a successful season for the Toronto Raptors affiliate as they finished with the best regular season record, with many of their players moving up to the big club throughout the NBA season and making substantial contributions. Despite the on court success, It was a challenging season for the Raptors 905, playing to a nearly empty Paramount Fine Foods Centre for most of the year due to the pandemic. Thankfully, when the restrictions were lifted, the fans returned in full force to cheer on the home team lead by Stripes, the Raptors 905 mascot. When next season begins, bring out the whole family to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre and cheer on the 905 to another first place finish and hopefully a G League championship.

“I am in awe of the amazing work our firefighters do every single day of the year. And over the course of the pandemic, our firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty, helping to administer vaccines and support the city in its fight against COVID19,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Today, I had
the opportunity to visit Station 101 to personally express my gratitude to our firefighters who regularly put themselves at risk to keep all of Mississauga safe.” Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services is comprised of almost 750 fire professionals that responded to over 27,000 emergency calls in 2021.
