Victorian Christmas AT B R O N T E C R E E K By Leslie Styles
From late December until January 5th, Friends of Bronte Creek Provincial Park invited the public to take a step back in time to the year 1900 and experience a Victorian Christmas. Henry Breckon’s Spruce Lane farmhouse, built in 1899, was elegantly decked out with wonderful decorations including boughs of pine and sliced oranges. Staff were clad in 1890s garments while creating gingerbread ornaments and cranberry-popcorn garlands. In a nearby barn, traditional games and activities were available including a giant checkers game. Hot chocolate, apple cider and other treats were offered for sale, as well as maple syrup and jams. A few farm animals huddled together outdoors while a huge turkey gobbled, beckoning visitors to check out the chicken coop. The whole experience made for an enjoyable learning experience for young and old.Â

Courage Polar Bear 35TH ANNUAL
in Support of World Vision
“It was a great day at Bronte Beach Park today,” said Todd Courage. “We raised over $120,000 and almost $2 million to date — a fantastic year yet again”. 6
NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
What a way to ring in the New Year! On January 1st, hundreds of brave souls took the plunge into the icy cold waters of Lake Ontario to raise funds for clean water in developing countries through World Vision Canada. A 35 year tradition, the annual Courage Polar Bear Dip was held at a new location, Bronte Beach Park in Oakville, due to unsafe conditions at Coronation Park. Organized by brothers Trent and Todd Courage, there was live music from singer/guitarist Mike Waling, and the ever popular Crazy Costume contest which saw a Raptor, Vikings, Irishmen and even Elvis made an appearance.
Skating the Loop By Leslie Styles
It was a beautiful day for skating at the Ice Loop in Waterdown Rotary Memorial Park. With top 40 hits booming, skaters rounded the loop and took advantage of the outdoor winter venue. One skater, Alf, had driven up from Aldershot to skate with his granddaughter, Roslyn. “I really wish more communities would do something like this,” he commented. “An outdoor loop like this one would be perfect in Aldershot’s Lasalle Park.”

Guilt-Free Pizza with a
FIERY KICK Don’t settle for everyday marinara when saucing your next pizza. Here, we’ve topped a gluten-free cauliflower crust with a fiery curry sauce and tandoori-spiced chicken for an Indian-inspired pie.
Ingredients • 1 pkg (300 g) PC cauliflower pizza crust
Chef's Tip Baking the crust on a rack allows for maximum air circulation while also supporting the weight of the toppings – and avoiding any messy spills in the oven.
• 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs • 1 tsp (5 mL) tandoori spice blend • 2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil • 1 cup (250 mL) lightly packed baby spinach • 1/3 cup (83 mL) tikka masala cooking sauce • 1/4 cup (60 mL) thinly sliced red onion • 1 cup (250 mL) shredded mozzarella cheese
Chicken
Tikka Masala PIZZA Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Serves: 6
Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place crust, bottom (flat) side up, on wire rack set over baking sheet. Bake, flipping crust halfway through, until edges are golden, 20 to 24 minutes. STEP 2. Meanwhile, sprinkle chicken with tandoori spice. Heat oil in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken, turning once, until golden and no longer pink inside; about 8 minutes. Transfer to cutting board; let cool enough to handle. Thinly slice into bitesize pieces. STEP 3. Wipe skillet clean; heat over medium heat. Cook spinach, stirring, until wilted and liquid has evaporated; about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. STEP 4. Spread sauce onto crust, leaving 1/2 inch (1 cm) edge uncovered. Arrange chicken, spinach, onion and cheese over top in even layers. Bake until bubbling and browned; 7 to 8 minutes. Let stand 2 minutes.

Financial
Invest Your TFSA For Growth Many institutions neglect to inform their clients that their TFSA can be invested into the market. Instead, the advice offered is to put the money in the TFSA in a high interest savings plan. If you have the finances to commit your TFSA to longer investing (5 or more years), investing your TFSA to maximize the growth opportunities is the wiser choice.
Every year you change. Every year your plan should change with you. If it hasn’t been updated in the last 2 years, it’s time to update it today.
Updating Your Plan for 2020 Every year, Canadians make new year resolutions. They commit to making their lives healthier through better eating, more exercise, and taking more time for themselves. One area of their lives many people neglect to “healthify” though, are their investments. They assume that what worked for them in the past, will continue to work for them. However, with the addition of new products in the market, changes to the way you are taxed, and contribution limits to registered accounts, last year’s plans might not be up to date.
Here are 4 things you should look at with your investments this January to help your net worth continue to grow in 2020. 10
NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
Pay Outstanding Debt 2019 was a great year in the markets. This means that if you were invested in the market, your savings have hopefully outpaced your yearly expenses. If you have outstanding debt, maybe a mortgage or a line of credit, consider withdrawing some funds from a nonregistered investment to put extra against that debt.
Contribute To Your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) Every year, you are allotted more contribution room in your TFSA. For 2020, an additional $6,000 of TFSA contribution room is allotted to you. Also, you reclaim previously used contribution space for any withdrawals you made in 2019. If possible, transferring any cash or nonregistered investments into your TFSA will give you tax free growth on those investments.
Invest With Taxes In Mind With registered accounts, how they are taxed is pre-defined. With non-registered investments, the tax can be applied in many different forms. And depending on your income level, those different forms generate more tax against you. Using a specific style of investments, (eg. Corporate Class investments), can control how your investments grow which defines how you are taxed. When you invest with taxes in mind, you can possibly reduce the tax generated against you by 50%. If any of these tips have not been part of your planning, we would love to talk with you about your plan to ensure a strong 2020 for you.

CANADA’S L ARGEST
ALL-SANTA By Leslie Styles
12
NeighbourhoodMagazine.ca
Ho Ho Ho! Thousands of Santas ran down the streets of Burlington on December 7th for the iRun Santa Burlington 5K, Canada’s largest all-Santa race! This annual fundraiser is in support of the CHCH Christmas Toy Drive and the Hamilton Food Share.
A holiday tradition, this fun family event was a great way to celebrate the season as participants donned full Santa suits (including a beard!) and ran through the city for this great cause. At the finish line, they were greeted with cheers as well as the live music of Obi, a great local band. Those in attendance graciously donated new unwrapped gift for kids 12 and under, non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations. It was a proud day for Burlington and a great way to bring the community together in the spirit of the season.

ARE YOU DOING ENOUGH? Estate Planning is an ongoing process, it’s never done. Here are some clues that you haven’t done enough:
ONE - You don’t have a Will or Powers of Attorney in place. These legal documents are the foundation of every estate plan. TWO - You’re not thinking about the “Why”. Your legacy is the bigger story about the values and traditions that you are passing on. THREE - You’re relying on dangerous assumptions “We always thought he’d die first.” “The kids will be able to figure it out.” Assumptions like these create blindspots and mean we are not prepared for a wider range of possible outcomes. Brown Lawyers are purposeful planners taking clients on a journey that will last far beyond their own years. Write your own last chapter. CONTACT BROWN LAWYERS TO BOOK A CONSULTATION TODAY!
