Over these past many weeks our lives have changed profoundly. Our number one priority is staying well and ensuring we don’t contribute to the spread of COVID-19. Staying home has come to mean staying safe and those who do venture out do so out of necessity, taking an abundance of precautions.

We continue to have deep appreciation for our frontline workers who are enabling us to get through this worldwide pandemic. Our medical professionals, paramedics, PSWs, firefighters, police and those who bravely risk their own health to keep us well have our full support. A new level of appreciation for grocery store, pharmacy, postal, delivery, volunteers and varied essential workers has given us the opportunity to say thank you more often. Many businesses in our communities have felt the economic impact of the pandemic. Buying local has never been so important. Phone and online orders are happily filled, contactless pick up and delivery get the goods to us.

Purchasing a gift card, ordering in for a meal or stopping by an open business to show your support are all valued gestures. These actions will help keep our local businesses afloat until regular business can resume. Whether you are social distancing from seniors, family members and friends, home schooling or working from home, collectively we draw strength from being in this together. Phone calls, texts, emails and zoom help us to feel connected. The creativity and humour being shared at this time helps to lift our spirits. The abundance of acts of generosity, caring and concern speak to our Canadian resiliency and strength. We see healthy days ahead.

Elvis is alive!

Professional vocalist Cameron Caton has entertained for years at local functions and venues. Since Covid-19 has affected so many lives, Cameron has transformed himself into Elvis Presley to help raise money and collect nonperishables for those struggling to put food on the table.

“He’s got all the right moves,” remarked spectator Pat Flanagan as she danced to Cameron’s rendition of ‘Teddy Bear’. The May 30th benefit concert was organized by Burlington resident and Cameron’s long time buddy, Jerry Romano who had handed out flyers throughout his neighbourhood. Approximately 60 guests came to enjoy the show with families spacing themselves out according to social distancing guidelines.

OVER 500 LBS OF FOOD WAS DONATED by neighbours during the hour long benefit concert. Grateful for the outpouring of support, Cameron, who looked and sounded like the real King, announced, “I’m just the spark that gets this fire started but my audience keeps the flames burning. Thank you. Thank you very much.”

Apart from donating to Burlington’s Food Bank, Cameron also contributes to women’s shelters and baskets for Covenant House. Thank you, Cameron. Thank you very much.

BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS DURING ISOLATION

Who would have ever thought we would be planning birthday parties without a gathering? Not me. But with a birthday to celebrate at the end of April, we sat down and put our thinking caps on to come up with ways to make it equally as awesome.

Here are some great ideas for planning a birthday celebration while social distancing. 8

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Start with the Invitation Since the birthday boy or girl can’t physically hand out their party invitations, an e-vite is the next best thing. I suggest using Wish & Give. Their online e-vites encourage attendees to donate to the birthday child’s gift and their charity of choice. If your child has their eyes on that very expensive LEGO set, this is a great way to get them their perfect gift from all of their friends!

Decorate Go all out with the décor. This is no time to scrimp on the streamers! Wait till they’ve gone to bed and watch their surprise in the morning!

Plan a YES Day Have you had a Yes Day before? It’s simple. Anything your child asks, you say Yes to (within reason). “Mom, can I have chocolate for breakfast?” Yes! “Dad,

want to play ball in the yard?” Yes! Other requests, like seeing friends, may need a “Yes, once this is all over”, but this is a sure-fire way to have a positive birthday.

Bring the Movie Theatre Home If your child is a movie fan, they’ll love to stream a movie! There are so many amazing streaming sources to watch movies for free or for a small fee, on-demand. Universal Studios Entertainment is releasing movies that are “still in theatre” to streaming services On Demand. Once the movie is chosen, turn your living room into a theatre by closing your curtains and blinds to make the room dark. Make sure to pop some popcorn or get the real stuff delivered from Film.ca, and of course, don’t forget the candy and drinks. ACTION!

Chalk Art Messages from Friends I loved seeing the creativity of the #chalkyourwalk movement – so use it to display birthday messages! Drive over to a friend’s house and #chalkTHEIRwalk! Send them some birthday love from 6+ feet away on their special day.

Order Take Out/Curbside Dining from their Favourite Local Restaurant Delicious food is always a great way to make a birthday celebration successful. Thankfully, many restaurants are still open and offering delivery and pick up. Go to the restaurant’s website to see if they are open or check out my facebook page with a list of restaurants still open.

Organize the Great Canadian Bake-Off! If your kid loves to bake, or just loves to laugh, why not have a baking challenge with their friends? First, contact the parents to arrange a FaceTime or Zoom party time. Next, drop off all of the cake baking needs and decorations (while maintaining your distance). The party starts with everyone having their naked cake ready to decorate. The mess, the laughter, and the friends will make for some great memories. You can even record the Zoom call! You can also have cookie dough delivered from a local bakery.

Balloons Balloons brighten anyone’s day and Ettridges has kept up their balloon creations and delivery during this time. Daffy Dill The Clown is our favourite balloon twister and she can deliver unicorns, princesses, rainbows and more!

Have a Netflix Party Netflix Party is a new way to watch Netflix with friends online. Netflix Party synchronizes video playback and adds a group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. Kids can watch and message the group at the same time. You can even deliver some movie-watching supplies like popcorn, candy and drinks to all the kids in the party. Bonus points for a small pizza!

Our world we live in may be changing, but celebrating people should never go away. Use the many resources out there to make someone’s special day one of the best they ever had.

Active Parents is the leading online resource for families in the GTA and GHA. They connect parents and grandparents to great ways to spend time with their families. In addition, they are the leading online marketing outlet for familyfocused businesses looking to share their services with local parents.

A Springtime

Stroll By Jason Stacey | Photography by Peeter Poldre

WITH THE TREES, BUSHES AND FLOWERS IN BLOOM, springtime is always a great time to get outside to experience the intricate beauty of nature. Accentuated by the soft light of sunrise, THN Media Photographer, Peeter Poldre grabbed his camera and took an early morning walk around his yard to capture the splendour of the season. Using a telephoto lens, Peeter looked for back-lighting and/or a pleasing background to highlight his subjects.

• 4 pieces of marinated and cooked boneless, skinless Chicken Breasts • 2 heads of Romaine Lettuce, washed, trimmed and sliced into quarters or thirds (depending on size) from top to bottom, leaving core on • 4 slices of Precooked Bacon, chopped • 1 cup Croutons • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese, shredded FOR THE MARINADE

Cook's Tip

• • • • • •

1/4 cup Olive Oil 1/8 cup Lemon Juice 1 clove of Garlic, minced 1/2 tsp Salt 1 tsp Dried Oregano 1/4 tsp Pepper

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • • • • • •

2-3 cloves of Garlic, peeled 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 tsp Anchovy Paste 1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce 2 drops Tabasco Sauce 1/2 Lemon Juice 1 Egg Yolk 1/2 cup Olive Oil 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated

+ additional oil for brushing on the romaine

DIRECTIONS STEP 1. Mix together the marinade and put in a Ziploc bag with the chicken in the fridge for at least an hour. STEP 2. Meanwhile, chop the bacon into small pieces and reserve. STEP 3. Combine dressing ingredients and put in a food processor and blitz until smooth, and reserve. STEP 4. Preheat BBQ grill to med-high. STEP 5. Brush the romaine wedges with olive oil and place on grill. Keep an eye on them - it won’t take long to grill. Roughly 2 minutes total. Turn after 30 seconds to a minute, and continue until the leaves are slightly charred, but the lettuce should still be a bit crisp near the core. Reserve on a platter. STEP 6. Once chicken has marinated for an hour, place on the preheated BBQ grill and grill until internal temperature of the chicken is 165°F. STEP 7. Slice each chicken breast across the grain into bite-size pieces and place on top of the grilled romaine platter. STEP 8. Sprinkle the bacon pieces and croutons on over the chicken and romaine, and drizzle the dressing on top. Sprinkle with grated parmesan. NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Burlington Public Library Helps

The Gift of Giving Back

Responding to Joseph Brant Hospital’s ongoing need for personal protective equipment, Burlington Public Library (BPL) delivered their two MakerBot 3D printers, computers, and 3D filament to the Biomedical Engineering team at JBH. To make sure the printers were right for the job, BPL’s former maker-in-residence, Harrison King-McBain, fabricated a prototype based on a design approved by JBH physicians. The hospital received the printers on April 8, along with the Library’s heartfelt thanks to all JBH staff for their tremendous work around the clock to help those in their care.

The Gift of Giving Back recently donated $85,000 to their beneficiaries: the Burlington Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Food for Life, the Compassion Society, Halton Women’s Shelter, and the Carpenter Hospice to help them purchase food for the vulnerable folks they serve. This is, of course, in addition to the almost 1.5 million pounds of food that was collected by young people in Burlington in November including members of the Burlington Eagles, Burlington Barracudas, BOMBA, Burlington Gymnastics Club, and Burlington Soccer, as well as the staff and students of Bateman High School.

#PromIsOn2020 Local Notre Dame secondary school grade 12 student Sophia Divita, who shadowed me for a day last summer, worked hard with her classmates and cohorts around the country to make sure #PromIsOn2020 no matter what! Raising funds for Kids Help Phone in the process, they created a new way to celebrate together virtually in these challenging times and still get dressed up and dance the night away! I wish Sophia and all this year’s graduates a wonderful graduation and sincere congratulations. I know the grads of 2020 will forever be a wonderfully unique bunch with extraordinary shared memories and a very special bond.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MARIANNE MEED WARD As a result of the situation our city faces with COVID-19, many local organizations and businesses

have inspired us by taking action to support our community in new and creative ways. From retooling their manufacturing process to create personal protective equipment, to donating food or supplies to our local hospital, to finding new ways to connect with vulnerable residents and get them the essentials they need, our city has risen to this unique and unprecedented challenge. I have received emails and notifications from many residents, letting me know of the good work that is being done throughout this crisis. I want to take a moment to recognize them here and thank them for inspiring us all with their generosity and innovation. I invite the community to continue to reach out and alert me of additional stories of inspiration via mayor@burlington.ca.
