Christmas is my favorite time of the year. As we get ready for another holiday season, we wanted to give you a jump-start on buying local this year. We know many businesses in the Sioux Empire are run by local families, and we want to help support them. Whoever you are looking to shop for this holiday season, we have lots of local options to choose from. You will notice lots of little ones throughout this issue. We held our largest photo shoot ever with over 20 kids running around. We are thankful to partner with Child’s Play Toys and Julie Prairie Photography to help make the photo shoot a huge success. We are working on some more casting calls, so be sure to follow our Facebook page. A great gift that keeps on giving is an experience, and we have many options available this year. In fact, we may have to start a new tradition in our family! One of my family’s favorite holiday traditions is to go and cut down our Christmas tree each year. We usually think the trees are too small when we look at them, but always find out when we get home that it’s too big! It’s something we have fun doing and look forward to every year. Share with us on our Facebook page, some of your family’s favorite traditions, and be sure to follow us – we have lots of giveaways going this month!

NEXT ISSUE: Busy Working Families: For many of us, we work in the world of working parents. We are busy, on the go and sometimes we’re just trying to get through each day to make it to the next. In our next issue, we’re going to feature some working families who will share their tips and tricks to balancing work, family and life. This is a fun issue you won’t want to miss!

Exercise During Pregnancy:
Is it Safe?
Is exercise during pregnancy helpful or harmful for you and baby? This is one of the many questions expectant mothers can face during pregnancy, and everyone has answers. But the conflicting advice you receive from your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers can make it difficult to know if you’re doing the right thing. Baby, let’s move! According to Kristin Hermanson, M.D., obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Sanford Health, most momsto-be shouldn’t be afraid to exercise. “For healthy women with normal pregnancies, most exercises are safe, but a few changes or adjustments may be necessary,” she adds. “Make sure to discuss plans with your health care provider. Together you can determine what is a safe exercise routine for you and your unborn baby.” Dr. Hermanson generally recommends women be active for about 30 minutes every day. Make sure to keep activity at a moderate or low intensity level. You should be able to carry on a conversation while working out. In the past, many believed if you weren’t already active, pregnancy wasn’t a good time to start. Dr. Hermanson says this is no longer the case.

November 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
“Whether expectant moms are new to exercise or have been active for years, they can reap benefits of exercise during pregnancy,” she says. “Obviously if you don’t have a routine in place, it’s good to start out slowly.” Benefits for you and baby Dr. Hermanson says regular exercise during pregnancy can have a positive impact before and after your baby is born. Benefits may include: • Less back pain and constipation • Healthy weight gain • Less risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia • I mproved overall physical fitness and emotional well-being • P otentially easing or even shortening labor and delivery • Normal, healthy birthweight for baby • A healthier heart for baby
“Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after workouts,” she says. “It’s very important to stay hydrated.” It’s also important to not get overheated. When temperatures get warmer and the humidity increases, make sure to exercise in a temperaturecontrolled room if possible. “Avoid standing still or lying flat on your back as much as possible,” Dr. Hermanson suggests. “Both positions can decrease the amount of blood returning to your heart and may cause your blood pressure to decrease for a short time.”
Exercises to avoid during pregnancy Stay away from activities that increase the chance of getting hurt or becoming overheated. They include: • Basketball • Soccer • Water or snow skiing • Horseback riding • Scuba diving • Hot yoga
pregnancy
Make smart, healthy choices When exercising during pregnancy, Dr. Hermanson says there are some extra precautions to remember.
9
Safe exercises for mom and baby • Walking • Swimming or water workouts • Stationary bicycling • Modified yoga or Pilates If you are an experienced runner or jogger, these are also an option. Remember to discuss any and all activities with your health care professional before beginning. n
THEY PLAY WHILE YOU PLAY With more fitness options than ever before, it’s time to get active with the whole family at the Sanford Wellness Center.

It’s here again, the unavoidable cold and flu season. We try to do our best to be good parents, yet the big question remains: “When should I keep my child home from daycare or school?”
an A re Th

#Mo
According to Claire McCarthy, MD of Harvard Health Publishing, there are four major symptoms that should be on your radar and would be good cause to keep your kiddo home: 1. Fever. If your child has a fever of 100.4 or more, keep them home. Fever usually always indicates an infection of some kind or something else happening with the body. Fever reducers may help your child feel better, but it only masks the fact that your child may be contagious. 2. Vomiting or diarrhea. Both of these things can lead to dehydration in a hurry. If your child refuses to eat or drink, this complicates dehydration and could mean a trip to the emergency room. Don’t forget to replace the fluids your child is losing. 3. Severe pain. This is any pain that is more than discomfort. Pain is a good indicator of potential serious problems. If your child has any pain that is more than mild, get it checked out. 4. Persistant coughing or unusual breathing. Labored breathing or wheezing can be concerning. Barking coughs or a cough that causes vomiting is also something that should be taken seriously. Always keep in mind that the common cold can bring on some not so common complications. Ear infections, asthma, sinusitis, or pneumonia can come along for the ride with a cold. Treating the symptoms of a cold is your best bet. Be sure they stay hydrated and rested. Be careful when using over the counter medicines. Watch the dosage so you never give a little body more than it can handle. The problem we often face is that we are too busy for our child to be sick. There is a 10:00 a.m. meeting that can’t be missed, so a dose of medicine will have to do. Off to daycare they go. Four hours later, you receive the call to come get your child because the fever went back up and the cough has returned. Unfortunately, taking your already sick child to a den of germs only complicates things and can potentially make your child sicker. Their weakened immune systems can’t fight anything more than they already are taking on. Try to beat the bugs before they attack. Make sure your child is sleeping well, eating well, drinking plenty of water, taking vitamins, and learning how to wash their hands. n

The square head includes two googly eyes, a smile created with a sharpie pen and a red balloon scrap for the turkey’s snood. You can also paint the beak yellow as shown. Faux leaves were added to the back for the turkey’s feathers. I was able to attach everything using a hot glue gun.
13
Turkeys are an interesting looking animal! Get creative and add orange, yellow, brown and/or red acrylic paint. To create the turkey’s body, use a rectangle scrap of a 2 in. x 4 in. wood piece. For this project we found a small wood square for the head and a round wood circle for the middle. If you don’t have wood scraps around, you could use the same shapes out of paper to create your turkey.
With a sharpie, add “Happy Thanksgiving!” You could also include what you are most thankful for this year! They are too cute not to make one for yourself. Get creative with your crafty turkey! These are great to make with children or adults. n

The holiday season brings the gift-buying season a tradition that spans centuries and, for many, one of the best times of the year. For others, however, gift-giving brings stress and pressure, whether they don’t have enough time to get what they need, or they overthink the entire thing. With a change of perspective — and a framework of simplicity — that pressure can be relieved: instead of focusing on things, focus on time.
Experience gifts build relationships. Simply put, when we spend time together we get to know each other better.
When we look back at our holiday memories, we might remember a gift or two, but more often we recall the time we spent with our loved ones, lounging in pajamas, or eating cinnamon rolls and cookies for breakfast.
While wrapping an experience can be tricky, there are some fun ways to present your gift. Consider a scavenger hunt (which is an experience in itself) or create a handmade coupon or craft to present it.
This may be why “experience gift-giving”, including time-based gifts, has taken off in recent years. In 2017, 40% of shoppers planned to give experience gifts rather than store-bought items, and research shows that interactive experiences like mystery dinner theaters, trips to museums, or even a picnic create longer memories than a material item.

Gift of Experience
15
Experience gifts are all about stopping, getting out of your regular routine and enjoying each other’s company. Not sure what to give? Think playfully! It could be as simple as walking through a nature park, or going on a road trip to a local town. Check out the museums or walk down Main Street. But most importantly, be in the moment. Regardless of how the gift takes shape, there’s one thing we can be sure of: the time we spend together during the holidays is a gift we always remember … especially when breakfast cookies are involved! n

The Snowball Game by Hood Magazine
The perfect game to keep the little ones endlessly occupied during the winter months! Supplies: Cotton balls Straws Small buckets or baskets Painter’s tape Timer To Play: Give each player a straw, a small basket or bucket of counted cotton balls. (Give each player the same number of cotton balls.). Using painter’s tape so you don’t leave any marks on your table, tape off a large square in the middle. The goal is to use your straw to “suck” up a cotton ball and move it to the square. The player who moves the most Snowballs from their bucket in the set time wins! Set your timer for whatever you feel is appropriate for your child’s age. n

Getting in the Holiday Spirit
through Fashion and Photos The holiday shopping season is fast approaching, which means not only is it time to start looking for gifts, but also those perfect holiday outfits for your family. When considering your holiday wardrobe, think classics this year. The kids clothes this year are elegant and timeless, in fact you might want to box them up and keep them to pass down from generation to generation. We partnered with Child’s Play Toys in Sioux Falls and Julie Prairie Photography to showcase some of the hottest winter holiday fashion trends and some pretty cute kids too! You’ll notice floral prints are in this holiday season as well as the traditional plaids. These outfits are sure to get you and your child in the holiday spirit. And don’t forget about the pajamas! Every child loves a new pair of pajamas to wear Christmas morning. As usual the trend with pajamas is that anything goes! You’ll see all kinds of patterns and colors and of course lots of smiles. Even the littlest ones aren’t forgotten when it comes to holiday fashion. Again, basic and timeless are the hottest trend in kids clothes this holiday season. Be sure to take the time to coordinate those outfits and splurge on the pajamas if you can. Even the smallest details are sure to get your little one in the Christmas spirit. n

Give it a shot. Stay up-to-date on immunizations
Vaccines give you the power to protect your family from getting sick at every age.
Vaccines have a low risk of adverse outcomes and the benefits greatly outweigh the risk.
Vaccines can prevent many serious illnesses including polio, diphtheria, measles and even some types of cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes 31,000 cancers in the United States every year, most of which could be prevented with HPV vaccination.*

Many annual checkups and preventive immunizations are covered 100 percent (at no charge) by most health plans. Check with your health insurance carrier to identify what is covered with your plan.

A Gift of a Lifetime
39
I will never forget December 24th, 1984. I was nine-years-old and there was a knock at the door. Upon opening it, I heard two men say “Merry Christmas!”The next thing you know they are wheeling a beautiful console piano into a spot that looked as if our home was built for it. It was a gift from my parents and grandparents to encourage my interest in music. I now had my first piano. Actually the ONLY real piano I’ve owned up until my 40th birthday, when my dream of owning a grand piano became a reality.
Why do I share this? Because that “bigger” gift was with me for the last 34 years of my life. That gift was used nearly every day to improve my talent, but also helped me express my feelings through music. It was a gift that was never shoved into a closet when I became bored with it. It was never a gift that would be “thrown out” because I stopped playing with it. It was a gift that has molded me into who I am today. Consider this before your holiday shopping begins. Before you go out and find the newest gadget, toy, or “gotta have it” gift, think about investing in a gift this holiday season that can have a long-lasting impact on your life, your spouse’s life, or the life of your children. A “legacy” your kids can someday pass onto their children. You never know, 30-35 years from now they may be writing about it. Have a Merry Christmas!!! n

Conversations Foster Parents
Should Have Before Christmas If you are a foster parent, you know that including a foster child as part of your family, in big and small ways, helps the child feel cared for and safe. But your extended family may not know this or fully understand the role they can play to bring that message home. As we enter the holiday season, be aware that aunts, uncles, and grandparents may be unsure about “the rules” for how they interact with the child in your care. They may have questions about how to engage the child in family gatherings and gift-giving occasions. The following seven questions will help you and your extended family set expectations for your time together over the holidays: Should we include the foster child in our family photo/Christmas photo cards? Due to confidentiality restrictions, you can’t send Christmas photo cards that show a foster child’s face,
40 |
November 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
and identifying photos cannot be posted on Facebook (you may need to remind family members about this). But in your home, display the child’s photo or photos of the family that include the child. Some children may never have been part of a family photo before, and it would be hurtful to ask the child to step out of the photo so you can get a shot of “just our family.” I saw a Christmas photo card where a foster family used a photo that was taken in such a way that the child’s face wasn’t identifiable, but the child was there in the photo, part of the family. Should we hang a stocking for the child? Yes. If there’s a cultural or religious difference, or if the
biological family has asked you not to, then respect the parents’ wishes. Otherwise, include the child if opening stockings are part of your family tradition.
Should grandparents (and other family members) spend the same amount on a gift
Doing so communicates to the child that the world is a generous place. If she has had a rough childhood and has only known scarcity, it will mean a lot for her to know someone cared about her and sent her a gift. That gesture can form a memory that stays with her into her adult life.
family
Should we incorporate the child’s traditions into our family gathering? Yes. Explain to your extended family that kids in your home may have traditions they want to observe. Ask the child if he has favorite foods or activities he likes to do at Christmas that you could do together as a family. If he always had green Rice Krispy treats on Christmas Eve, incorporate that into how you usually celebrate Christmas Eve. Let extended family members know ahead of time to avoid someone asking, “Why are we doing that? We never do that…” or other questions that might make the child feel as though his tradition isn’t important.
for the foster child as they plan to for the other children in the family? Yes. Try to encourage your family to keep things even among the children. If your family exchanges gifts, encourage them to do the same for the foster child as they would do for the grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc., even if they don’t know the child well or haven’t yet developed a relationship.
41
Holiday gatherings with friends and relatives can reinforce the central message that the child is safe, loved, cared for, and part of the family. Communicate in every way you can, “You belong here.” n

We put the FUN back into FUNdraising
A local organization is giving back to it’s community kids through simple family friendly FUNdraising experiences and grant programs. The holidays are coming! For many of us, this means company parties, family gatherings, shopping, gifting, festive programs and traditions, several occasions of eating one too many of Grandma Mary’s sugar cookies, and hopefully even some service or donations toward charitable organizations and causes. The holidays can bring with them an awareness of how much we have, leaving us with cozy feelings of gratitude and appreciation, and sometimes it reminds us how little others have. This combination of gratitude and mindfulness leaves a gap of possibility for us to make a difference. A local organization, Giving Hope Inc. under the ownership of Neil Hlebichuk, has chosen to bridge that gap within this mission statement: “Our mission is to positively impact the lives of children and families
42 |
November 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
by supporting organizations that serve youth through feeding programs, mentorship, healthcare, clothing, protection, education, or scientific research.” Not only do they sponsor two local elementary schools and offer grant programs that organizations can apply for, but through simple, fundraising events, the whole family (or hopefully a multitude of families) can enjoy a night out without the worry and work of trying to sell things to people. This new concept of fundraising includes a buffet, an evening of State of the Art Bingo in a newly renovated space (Burnside Bingo), and drawings for your group. All this, while raising funds that support any children’s organization including youth sports such as; dance, cheer, hockey, soccer, baseball, football, etc., or any of your local booster clubs!

Organizations pay nothing to schedule their evening of entertainment and fun. While making great memories, they have the potential to raise hundreds and up to thousands of dollars through generous matching incentives, making the event a sure success.

Neil’s goal is to bring families and groups together for a fun social event with a comparable cost to a typical night out, including dinner and entertainment. Kids ages 8 and up are always welcome to partake!

Divorced Parenting and the Holidays: A Survival Guide
Being a divorced or separated co-parent can be especially difficult during the holiday season. Holidays carry with them a host of traditions and memories. It can be difficult to navigate those heightened emotions, along with the concept of being separated from your children during a special time. As you begin to plan for the upcoming holiday season, consider these tips: Put the children first. They deserve to celebrate and enjoy the holiday. Encourage them to enjoy the time they spend with their other parent and extended families.
It’s not a competition. The holidays are not the time to try and out-do your co-parent. Focus on the true meaning of the holiday.
Celebrate the holiday season yourself.
Communicate early, and as openly as you can. Coordinating the schedule in advance will

help work out any conflicts and hopefully avoid last minute disappointment for the children, parents, and extended family.
Accept your new financial reality. A divorce or separation often changes the financial standing of one or both parents. Focus on the gifts you can provide, such as time, attention and creating new traditions.
Celebrate your child’s other parent. If you can celebrate together, great! If you can’t, encourage them to draw a picture, make a card or help with a present for their other parent. It’s important to them, so
it should be important to you, even if it’s difficult to feel generous toward your co-parent.

communicating with your co-parent early enough, you should be able to coordinate with your extended family so your children can participate as much as possible.
Make your own traditions. Develop new traditions specifically for you and your children. Things may not be the same, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be just as special. Divorced or separated parents can use any combination of ways to share holiday time with their children. It’s important to allow your children to enjoy the holiday traditions of each parent as much as possible. Holiday schedules should also be part of a court-approved parenting plan. These schedules help avoid disputes. In general, holiday time takes precedence over the regular parenting time schedule, but it’s ideal if each parent can be flexible during the chaos of the holiday season. Some options for splitting holiday time include:
Alternate holidays. Assign specific holidays to each parent for even years and then swap the holidays in odd years. Split the holiday. Split the day of the holiday so that your child spends part of the day with each parent.
Celebrate twice. Schedule time for each parent to celebrate a holiday on different dates, such as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Parents can even determine an alternate date that becomes their traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas celebration, such as the weekend before or the weekend after the traditional dates.
Assign fixed holidays. Many parents have different holidays they think are important, such as Christmas and Hanukkah. Each parent can have those holidays every year. Holidays can be stressful for children of divorced or separated parents. If the parents focus on minimizing tension and planning ahead, they can create happy holiday memories for everyone involved. n

Holiday Shopping on a Budget
The most wonderful time of the year has arrived! This season of generosity and nostalgia brings us innumerable twinkling lights, delightful tastes and smells, and thousands of hustling shoppers seeking out the perfect gifts for their loved ones. The task of coming up with the perfect gifts without overspending can be a struggle. The following tips provide some help on choosing gifts that will stay within your budget! Prepare a budget: Put a little extra money into a ‘Christmas Budget’ each month throughout the year to prevent you from overspending in December. Set a limit on how much you can spend on each person, to create a budget before you begin your shopping. To avoid using credit cards, try to pay in cash for as much as you can. Monthly shopping: Another option is to look for sales throughout the year. Buy one or two gifts each month, then store away in a closet until Christmas. Quality over quantity: Rather than buying a loved one several gifts that they might like, focus on higher quality gifts that they will love. There are many local stores where you can find unique, quality products that will last. Not only will the gift be better appreciated, but it could end up saving you money by preventing you from buying too many gifts. Homemade gifts: Making your own gifts can be a huge money saver! Make gift ornaments, recipe books, reusable bags to replace wrapping paper, soaps, or candles. Multiply gifts: Choose an inexpensive gift that multiple people will enjoy like a photo book, grocery gift cards, coffee mugs, or maybe new sets of hats

and scarves. You may be able to get a discount for purchasing items in bulk. Download store apps: Many stores now have apps that you can download onto your phone. These apps can have coupons and notify you of when items go on sale. Ask for discounts: Don’t be afraid to ask! Occasionally there will be coupons or other discounts available if you just ask the cashier. Print retail coupons: Do a search on a website like RetailMeNot.com to find out if there are any available printable coupons to help you save in all stores you plan to shop in; this includes local stores! Use browser extensions: On your computer, install an extension like “Invisible Hand” onto your internet browser. It will alert you to where you can go to find better deals on the same product you are looking at online. Free shipping day: For all of you procrastinators out there, take advantage of Free Shipping Day! This will take place on December 14th. Hundreds of retailers participate in this event by offering free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas. n

Holiday Shopping Safety for Kids and Families
The holiday season can be a fun and joyful time of year; however it’s also a time of year when we need to be extra-cautious when we are out and about with our kids. So when you are out and about this holiday season enjoying time with your family, here are some tips that will help keep you safer. 1. Talk to your kids before leaving the house and make a rule that there are no electronics while moving through crowds of people. Remind them you must always be able to see them and they must always be able to see you. It may sound simple, but keep reminding them periodically.
2. O nce arriving at your destination make sure to mark your location. Get out of your vehicle and take a picture with your cell phone making sure to have an identifying object in the picture, as one way to help you remember later, especially if you are going to be there for an extended amount of time. If arriving during the day and you know it will be dark before you leave, park close to a light.
3. When entering, make sure to agree on a “meeting place” ahead of time, in case
best meeting places for younger kids in a mall would be a women’s clothing store. Strangers that want to take kids will go to places where they have the highest percentage of finding kids.
4. Never leave your kid(s) alone at video arcades, movie theaters, play areas, or other public places. Predators are known to look for unsupervised kids.
5. Let your kid(s) know that it’s not what a person looks like that makes them unsafe; it’s what they do that makes them unsafe.
6. A simple stranger rule to practice: “If I don’t know you, I can’t go near you, I can’t go with you and I can’t take anything from you.” Kids have been known to leave with a stranger because they seemed nice or maybe didn’t look like a stranger. n

Jam COOKIES Ingredients • 2 cups plain flour • 1/3 cup sugar • 1.5 cups butter, softened • 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh lemon zest (from 1 large lemon) • 4 egg yolks • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • Raspberry or strawberry jam, for filling • Icing sugar (confectioners’), for dusting
Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Sift the flour into a large bowl or electric food mixer and add the
sugar, butter, finely grated lemon zest, egg yolks, and vanilla extract. Mix until it all comes together to a dough. Remove from the bowl and flatten to a round with the palm of your hand or with a rolling pin to about 3/4-inch thick and chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface until it is about 1/4-inch thick, then, using a 2 1/2-inch round plain cutter, cut the dough into disks. Take 1/2 the disks and, using either the plain or flower shaped 1 1/4-inches cutter, cut holes out of the center of each. Bring the discarded scraps together and
make more disks and cut holes in the center of these. You want to end up with about 35 whole disks and about 35 disks with the centers cut out. Place the disks on several baking trays and bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes until golden. Allow to stand for a couple minutes, then remove the cookies from the trays and transfer to wire racks to cool. When the disks are cool, spread 1/2 to 1 teaspoon jam on the whole disks and top with the disks with the hole in them so that you can see the jam through the little windows. Dust with icing sugar (confectioners’) and serve.

Old World Bread for the Win! 5 Reasons for Going Back to Artisan Bread
1. U ncompromised purity: Our bodies are bombarded by so many non-food products and environmental toxins that aggravate our healthy processes. A typical store-bought bread loaf can contain preservatives, dough conditioners, artificial colors/flavors, and high fructose corn syrup! For many of us, bread is a staple in our diets, so making the switch to Artisan Bread with only wholesome ingredients, is a big move toward better health.
2. Wholesome ingredients: True Artisan Bread contains ONLY those ingredients you would have expected to find in your great grandma’s made-from-scratch bread: Wheat Flour, Salt, Water, and sometimes Yeast (if it wasn’t soured). Specialty flavors sometimes include additional familiar ingredients such as raisins, herbs, honey, or garlic, but THAT’S IT! No preservatives or other strange mystery ingredients needed in this most basic ancient food.
56 |
November 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
3. Hand made product: Each loaf of Artisan Bread is made with LOVE…. hand mixed, fermented, shaped, and baked by a skilled craft baker—No cookie cutter bread loaves here! This assures that each loaf is uniquely artistic and nourishing for you to enjoy.
4. Support for a local business: Remember that old saying that truly embodied the meaning of buying local?—ahh yes, “The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker.” It is a wonderful time to bring that way of life back to your family and the local community by picking your favorite local bakery to buy your weekly supply of Artisan Bread.
5. Meaningful connection: When we visit the specialty bakery and the people who dedicate their lives to making us a wholesome product, we feel connected to the whole process. We smell the hand-made bread, we get to know the faces behind the product, and we see their handiwork in front of us. In a fast paced world like today, this is a simple way to add meaning to our lives. n

What to Do with the Furnace over Winter Vacation
There are many families that travel over the holidays, leaving their home unoccupied during what could be very cold days. As you make your vacation plans you may think that it’s a good idea to turn your heat off while you are gone and save some money, because “why waste heat when there is nobody home to enjoy it?”

Here are a few tips on what to do with your furnace while on winter vacation.
1. Turn it down, but please do not turn it off. It certainly makes sense to turn your ther-
2. Work smarter, not harder. If you were to turn off your furnace while you are gone, chances are it’s going to get pretty chilly while you are gone and that means your furnace has to work harder once it’s back on to get to a comfortable temperature. Depending on how old your furnace is, that could put too much strain on it at one time
3. Program it. If you have a programmable thermostat, be sure to take advantage of programming it. That way you can keep it on a more efficient cycle while you are gone and then program it to kick in a little warmer before you arrive back from your trip.
4. Don’t Forget. While you are thinking about
5. Maintenance. It’s a good idea to get your furnace regularly inspected, which can save you a lot of time, money and headaches. It’s never fun to end a vacation coming home to a serious heating issue. A yearly inspection and maintenance can help prevent those issues and keeps your furnace running great while you are away and spending holiday time with your friends and family. The holidays are about spending quality time with the ones you care about most, so following these few tips before you head over the river and through the woods will help you enjoy it even more, as you will not have to worry about your home. n

mostat down while you are gone. While you and your family are comfortable with it being nice and cozy while you are home, it doesn’t need to be that warm while you are gone. What you do not want to do is turn it off though. Even if the temperatures are not going to get below freezing, you risk the potential of frozen pipes while you are gone. Forecasts and temperatures can change dramatically in South Dakota, so you are better off playing it safe by keeping it low and on. Another thing to consider is if you plan on leaving pets home (dogs, cats, fish, birds, etc) or having someone stop in to check on them or keep an eye on the house you will want it to still be comfortable for them. A good rule of thumb would be no more than 6 degrees cooler than what you are comfortable at. I’d recommend never setting it below 60 degrees while you are gone, pets or no pets.

Why a Smart Appliance? What is the driving force behind the increasing production of smart appliances in 2018? How can a smart appliance benefit me in my home today? Let’s see if we can help answer those questions. Smart appliances are appliances with electronic devices integrated in the operating systems of the appliance, that can connect a smart phone, tablet, or computer to all information and more control than ever before. The technology advancement allows you to receive an alert on your smart phone, smart watch or your home computer informing you of things like; your laundry is complete or the cookies are ready to be taken out of the oven. In addition, smart appliances can now send you a notification of when something is going wrong with the affected appliance. It can provide you an alert that informs you that someone left the refrigerator door open, or there is a leak in the washing machine. These features of smart appliances make them more convenient to use, provide additional peace of mind, and at the same time cut down on utility costs and can be a proactive tool in repair and maintenance, preventing potential loss due to failure of your appliance. The convenience of smart appliances can be witnessed by the ability to remotely control them using

the technology of your smart phone, watch, tablet or desk-top computer. You can start the washing machine an hour before you leave work allowing the cycle to be completed about the time you get home. It’s the same concept with the dishwasher. You can also pre-heat the oven so it’s ready to use when you walk in the door. The best part of this is you can do it from anywhere; your office, your car, or across the country. Smart appliances also allow you to increase the control of your home’s utility costs. One example: if you’re gone for an extended time, using your phone, you can put your refrigerator into a low power setting which ends up saving electricity. When the smart appliance sends you an alert or notification that maintenance is needed, or a failure has occurred, you can share that with the servicing agent and fix a repair much quicker and more efficiently. All of these features are elements that benefit you and your family every day. When you’re shopping for your next home appliance, whether it’s a washer or dishwasher, dryer or refrigerator, remember the benefits of the smart appliance and allow it to assist you in saving time and money. n

Put a New Faucet to Work
Over the Holiday Season Treat yourself to a new kitchen faucet - on average, your family uses it 70 times each day! Faucet technology has advanced over the past few years and it’s time to bring these advancements into your home. Touch technology: New touch technology allows you to activate your faucet with a simple touch! Whether your hands are full or dirty, you no longer have to struggle to operate your faucet. Motion sensor: Motion sensor faucets will transform your kitchen. The sensor detects your hand movement to activate water flow. Wave goodbye to dirt and germs and wave hello to hands-free. Shield spray: New shield spray technology makes doing the dishes a breeze! It creates a water dome around the sprayer so there is 90% less splash compared to traditional faucets. This helps to eliminate messes and might also help keep your clothes clean and dry. n
