Ways toReuse
Household Objects
By Shaina Herrmann, Sioux Falls Frugal Mom
Recycling is good, but reusing is better! Before you attempt to recycle an object, ask yourself if it could be reused instead. Here are some creative ways to get a second use out of several common household objects. • An empty laundry detergent bottle can be used as a watering can. • Extra return address labels can be used to brand anything as yours – books, movies, binders, etc. • Shoe boxes are great for picture filing, organizing office supplies, and storage for small toys.
• Glue a magnet to one side of a clothespin to create a notepad holder for your fridge. Use one to hold your grocery list. • Use shower curtain hooks to hang heavier items, such as purses, in your closet. • Run your junk mail through a shredder to use as packing material or for placing in the bottom of a gift basket. • Make your own plastic bag holder with an empty tissue box. • Store hair ties around an empty toilet paper roll. Toilet paper rolls can also be used for storing extra extension cords. n

‘HOOD ADVICE
FINANCIAL & HOMEOWNER COUNSELING
Summer Learning By Tessa Logan, Communications and Administrative Assistant Youth Enrichement Services Research has shown that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of a summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. How do parents prevent summer learning loss while still allowing their children a much needed summer break? The idea is to find a summer program that features a safe environment that allows your child the freedom to enjoy summer, while continuing to learn and build friendships. The environment that you choose should have balanced educational opportunities as well as activities that are age appropriate for your child. Age appropriate activities allow your child to feel comfortable, have fun, learn, and grow. The best summer programs feature educational activities that are fun and engaging so that children have so much fun that they don’t even realize that they are continuing to learn. Weekly field trips can also be a great learning experience. Taking children to the Washington Pavilion or a Sioux Falls Pheasants baseball game can be a great teaching tool without your children even realizing it. Special opportunities, such as swimming, gardening, karate, and roller skating will also keep your child’s active brain busy while experiencing the full benefits of a summer vacation. Finding a program that encourages continuous learning through the summer is possible! Do some research! Ask some questions! Do children get a balance between social, physical, and structured activites? Are there quiet times where children can brush up on reading and literacy? Having a fun, well-balanced summer may not only help your child succeed this Fall, but may be your child’s most enjoyable summer yet! n

By Greta Stewart Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center After a long Winter, most kids are ready to get outside and let some of that pent up energy loose. With Spring here and Summer just around the corner, there are a variety of athletic camps available through the Avera Sports Institute. “While our traditional training programs are six to eight weeks in length and consist of three 90-minute workouts per week, our staff can develop a training program to meet your needs and fit your schedule,” says Jason Askew, Avera Sports Institute Manager. One of the most popular training programs is The Athletic Republic program, which features off-season, high-intensity, performance-enhancing training for competitive athletes ages 12 through adult. Athletes completing the six to eight week program average improvements of .10 seconds in the 10-yard dash, .15 seconds in the ProAgility run and two inches in vertical jump. The Avera Sports Institute is also home to the SEBA Baseball Academy. This is a development program aimed at Sioux Falls VFW and Legion Baseball players. The academy runs April through July and can help improve skills such as: hitting, throwing, and field work. Key benefits of this program include: • Individually designed programs • Workouts designed specifically for baseball players • Access to the area’s premier indoor hitting, throwing, fielding and strength & conditioning facility. If your child is involved in other sports, Avera Sports Institute can help with those as well! n

Bacon & Egg Quesadillas Ingredients 6 strips of bacon 6-8 eggs 1 cup shredded cheese 8 tortillas salsa Gluten-Free Variation: use GF tortillas or corn tortillas
Directions
Cook bacon, remove and place on paper towel to drain excess fat. Pour most of the fat out of the skillet. Scramble eggs in skillet that you cooked bacon in. Place tortilla on cookie sheet, top with scrambled eggs, bacon strips and cheese on top. Place another tortilla on top. Bake at 300* for 10 minutes, until cheese melts and tortillas are slightly crispy. Remove and slice quesadillas into quarters. Serve with salsa and fruit!
Ingredients
Directions
Roll out each loaf of bread dough into a 10 in square. Spread with butter to within 1/2 in of edges. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over butter. Roll up jelly roll style; pinch seams to seal. Cut each loaf into six slices. For sauce, in a small saucepan, bring the brown sugar, butter, water and molasses to a boil. Pour into a greased 13x9 baking dish. Place rolls, cut side down, in molasses sauce. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Bake at 350* for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in dish for 5 minutes; invert onto a serving platter. Serve warm.
Oatmeal in the Crock Pot Ingredients 1 cup steel cut oats 2 cups water 2 1/2 cups milk 1 Tsp cinnamon Gluten-Free Variation: use GF Bob’s Red Mill oats

Bake for 20 min or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool. Spread each cupcake with frosting.

Paper Plate Projects
The number one preschool and elementary school craft supply we have on hand at our house would have to be paper plates. Here are some easy projects you can do with your little ones using paper plates. Lion & Lamb Paper Plate Project: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, so why not track those weather days with this Lion and Lamb paper plate project! For our lion, we used an orange paper streamer to make this lion’s mane, but you can also use pieces of yarn if you have them. For the lamb my 2 year old had fun helping place these cotton balls around the outside of the plate. This gave our lamb its fuzzy look.

St. Patrick’s Day Projects The end of the rainbow is where the Leprechaun hides with his pot of gold. We made this rainbow with part of a plate, some cotton ball clouds and some water color paint. You could also use crayons or glitter. What fun would a rainbow be without the pot of gold? We made ours with water color paints, crayons and we made the gold coins with school glue and glitter for some added sparkle. 4 paper plates are used to make this Celtic spiral shamrock. We used a green crayon to draw some Celtic spiral shapes and then painted over them with water colors. The stem is cut from a paper plate as well. A little bit of school glue holds it all together. n
Exploring Celiac Disease with
Nick & The Shrinking Inner Spaceship
When her son, Nick, was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Marcia Schmitz was scared. There is currently no cure for Celiac Disease and they knew that their family was embarking on a life changing journey. The more they educated themselves about Celiac Disease and how gluten affected Nick’s body, the less scary the disease seemed. The family wanted to share the same sense of manageable-ness with other families and came up with the idea for Nick & The Shrinking Inner Spaceship. Nick & The Shrinking Inner Spaceship is the story of Nick and his lab rat (aka “little brother Charlie”). Nick has built a spaceship that once an experienced pilot (aka Nick) is driving will shrink and be able to go inside Charlie’s stomach and explore. Nick goes through many of Charlie’s systems while discovering how our body digests food. Nick and his spaceship eventually exit Charlie’s little body (you’ll have to read the book to find out how!) just in time to hear his Mom calling. The book also gives readers four of Nick’s favorite Gluten Free recipes for others to enjoy with their family and friends. The book is currently available at great local retailers such as: Pomegranate Market, Simply Perfect, and East Dakotah Natural Foods Co-op. n March 2011 | thehoodmagazine.com | 29
