New Hendra case prompts vaccination follow-up call Thousands of Australian horse owners have been urged to give their horses critical follow-up vaccinations against the deadly Hendra virus, which can pass from horses to humans. Since launching in late 2012, more than 80,000 Australian horses have been vaccinated with Equivac® HeV, the most effective way to help protect them against the deadly virus, which remains a threat across the country. The latest call follows a new Hendra virus case in the Bundaberg area. Queensland's Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rick Symons said a private veterinarian had euthanased one horse on the property on March 17 after it become unwell over the weekend, with test results confirming the animal had Hendra virus. "There is one other horse on the property. Tracing and risk assessments are being undertaken on any animals that may have had contact with the infected horse to work out if further testing needs to be done," Dr Symons said. "The property has been quarantined which means restrictions apply to moving horses and horse materials on and off the property. The quarantine will be in place for at least one month." Dr Symons said this case was the first Hendra virus incident in Queensland this year. "Vaccination is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses. It is recommended that horse owners speak to their veterinarian about vaccinating their horses.” In the wake of the latest case, leading equine experts have raised concerns that some owners have not followed up with
To help boost coverage across the equine community, people who vaccinate their horses with Equivac HeV before 30 April will enter a draw to win $300 towards a preventative care check-up with their vet, courtesy of Zoetis. the booster dose required six months after the initial vaccination course, potentially placing their horses back in the firing line of the virus. In addition, failure to vaccinate horses with the six-monthly booster causes horses to lose their Hendra vaccinated status. In some cases, owners have just a matter of weeks remaining before their horses will lapse on the Hendra vaccination registry. “Hendra is a devastating virus, which can strike any time and in any place visited by flying foxes; effectively a huge expanse of Australia,” Dr Frank Condon, President of Equine Veterinarians Australia, said. “Unfortunately, a number of horse owners haven’t followed up with the critical six-month Equivac HeV booster, potentially leaving horses without adequate immunity against this deadly virus. “This is concerning as we have experienced a number of sudden outbreaks over the last few years and while it’s heartening to see so many horses already vaccinated, they could be left at risk without the follow-up booster. Removing mould and mildew from leather (Information supplied by Leffler & Son) Can a leather cleaner remove mould and mildew? Yes, leather cleaners can remove mould and mildew—the photos at left are testamount to that—but it is very important to choose cleaners that don’t ruin your leather in the process or set the scene for future mould and mildew invasions. Leather is made of a tangled mass of fine root-like fibres, and once microscopic mould and mildew spores lodge deeply in this tangle they are very difficult to shift. Anything strong enough to penetrate the fibre tangle and destroy every spore could damage the leather fibres as well, compromising the leather’s structure and strength. Don’t use old time remedies like vinegar, household bleach or alcohol—the concentrations needed to kill mould and mildew spores are also strong enough to damage the internal leather fibres. Also avoid traditional cleaners like saddle soap on already mouldy leather—these contain glycerin, which attracts and holds the very atmospheric moisture mould and mildew thrive on. Rather, use penetrating, pH-neutral products like Leather Therapy, which lubricate leather deep to the core without introducing moisture, and which inhibit future mould and mildew growth. Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner is the only US Environmental Protection Agency tested and approved product that contains ingredients that inhibit growth of mould and mildew. The following procedure will deliver results similar to those shown in the before and after photos:
How to clean mouldy mildewed leather 1.Take the mouldy or mildewed item outside to clean if at all possible—simply touching a mould or mildew patch will release countless numbers of spores into the air and you do not want to spread these inside where they can colonise other leather items. Failing that, remove any small leather items that are nearby and try to work in as well-ventilated an area with as much natural lighting or direct sunlight as possible. 2.Have a supply of old rags you are prepared to throw away. Wipe as much surface contamination as you can with a wet rag, then discard. Repeat with a clean wet rag. Be sure to discard rags in a way that won’t allow spores to spread further. Don’t rinse and reuse the rags. Use an old toothbrush to clean stitching lines and crevices. 3.Next, with all visible surface mould or mildew removed, use a water-based, pH neutral product like Leather Therapy Wash to give a safe, deep clean that removes the embedded dirt and organic residue that aids future mould and mildew growth 4.Allow the leather to dry fully in the sun— not only will evaporating excess moisture from the leather prevent new spores taking hold, but the UV rays of the sunlight will kill any remaining spores 5.Once dry, condition the leather with a pHneutral product such as Leather Therapy Restorer/Conditioner. Apply the conditioner with a sponge, sparingly as leather only absorbs what it needs. The Restorer/Conditioner will soak in and disappear, so there’s no need to wipe off. It will not stay wet or greasy unless you apply too much at once. The conditioner will not alter the colour or the gloss of your leather. But it will
How Do I Clean Leather Gloves? Leather gloves can be washed on your hands or in a washing machine! For best results, wash before they become too soiled. White gloves must not be washed with coloured articles. Coloured gloves may be washed with other articles of a similar colour. Washing Leather Gloves by Hand put gloves on to restore shape and softness
Before
After penetrate deep into the centre of the leather, nourishing and lubricating the fibres without introducing the moisture that allows mould and mildew to take hold. And being pH neutral means it won’t interfere with the natural acidic environment of leather but will increase its life. 6.We suggest you repeat this process with Wash and Restorer/Conditioner every three months to add years of life to your leather. Wash keeps the leather clean on the outside while Restorer/Conditioner nourishes and protects the leather from mould and mildew from the inside 7.Wash and Restorer/Conditioner are all you need for basic ongoing leather care and protection. However, you may wish to go a little further and use Leather Therapy Finish to give your precious leather a beautiful new shine while providing a protective shield from the elements. 8.A final treatment with Leather Therapy Water Repellant will give even more protection from water, wine, tea, coffee, dirt, mud and salt. Unlike Finish, the repellant will not make the leather look shiny. If anything it tends to give the leather a more matt finish so is best not used on anything you want to look glossy.

Looking after heritage wild horses The Guy Fawkes River National Park, in the New England area of northern NSW, is regarded as a "biodiversity hotspot" with over 40 different vegetation communities, 28 threatened plant species, 24 threatened fauna species and significant areas of old growth forest protected within the reserve. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has a legislative responsibility to protect all native habitats and wildlife within its reserves, this includes the Guy Fawkes River National Park. It also has a responsibility to minimise the impact of introduced species, including horses. Horses have been bred on lands in the vicinity of the GFRNP since the 1830s and have been present in a wild state since 1890s. Management of wild horse numbers in the park began in the early 1990s, with capture and removal programs focused on removing horses from river flats. In an effort to quickly reduce the large numbers of horses in the park, an aerial cull of horse was planned and in October of 2000, over 600 horses in the Guy Fawkes were slaughtered from helicopters. Media coverage of the cull reached every corner of the world and the Australian Government was pressured to 'Please explain'! In response, the Minister for the Environment, Bob Debus, commissioned a study into the heritage value of horses in the park and indicated that, should the horses be found to have genuine heritage significance, they would be humanely removed from the park so that they can be managed properly in another location by people with an interest in their heritage value. In February 2002, the final report by the Heritage Working Party found that these horses had significant historical, military and cultural value. They are direct descendants of

Australia's wartime cavalry horses, known as Walers, and are the only group of Australian wild horse to have proven heritage value. In 2003, as a result of the findings, the GFHHA (formerly known as the Guy Fawkes Wild Horse Management Association Inc) was developed. The GFHHA maintain objectives of managing the horses from the GFRNP once they have removed. Not only does the Association take possesion of horses passively removed from the GFRNP and offer them for sale to the public, but it also manages the horses to maintain their inherent characteristics and to preserve the unique genetics of these wild horses. A formal register and stud book has been established for these purposes. The GFHHA also actively promotes the GF horse versatility by sponsoring classes held at local ag shows and encouraging horse owners to participate in all disciplines. The Association is self-funded. Monies are raised through the sale of horses, donations and fundraising events. It has taken several years to progress this far with wild horse management. The Association has encountered many setbacks however it is
finally making a difference and is confident that its methods will set the standards for the future control of wild horses in Australia. The history of the horses from the Guy Fawkes River National Park spans to nearly 200 years. The wild horses of the Guy Fawkes River National Park, now known as Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses come from an incredibly beautiful area. The Guy Fawkes River National Park is beautiful, rugged and covers more than 62,700 hectares (approximately 155,000 acres) of
country near Ebor in the New England area of northern NSW. The Guy Fawkes has not always been a National Park. The area was once inhabited by local graziers and from the early 1800s to the 1940s, horses were specifically bred for the remount trade. The Colony's first exports were war horses and in 1834 the first horses left Australia consigned to the British Army in India. The criteria set down by the army was "the horse be entire, sound in wind and limb, over three years and under seven years, over 14hh and under 15hh, 1/2 Thoroughbred, and able to carry 17 stone". A good horse fitting the above description would fetch the breeder an amount of around 10 pounds, the equivalent of a year’s wages for most farmers. Pastoralists intentionally turned out well-bred stallions and mares in the park and a mixture of bloodlines were introduced to strengthen certain characteristics. Clydesdales were in use in the area for the timber industry and their genetics are clearly evident.  Continued page 7

Festival showcases heritage horses  From page 6 Many bay horses with white blazes and feathers on their feet show their ancestry. A mob of creamy mares, descendants of Saladin, a sire of historical significance for the Australian Stock Horse Society, were introduced and today the buckskins and palominos are still present, representative of these bloodlines. Over 320,000 horses left Australian shores with over 120,000 coming from NSW. The direct links with the horses drafted for use by the Australian Light Horse Brigade of World War 1, has secured the unique heritage value of the Guy Fawkes horses. Their ancestors of the carried the Australian Light Horse Brigade to victory in the great cavalry charge at Beersheba in 1917. In 1972, the main section of the Park was gazetted, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service took over the land. The graziers were forced to move from the area and they took most of their cattle and horses with them but due to the expanse and terrain of the area, the absence of fences, etc, some horses remained. Theses horses were bred to be strong, athletic and to endure the harshness of the Australian bush, and with no local management, it is no surprise that free ranging horses became wild, which resulted in large increases in wild horse populations to the present day. The modern GF Heritage Horse is a solid, sound and well-conformed animal with

straight movement. They show incredible stamina, strength and hardiness. Due to their intelligence, trainability and versatility, they are suitable for many different disciplines and can be seen competing in many arenas. Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses are quickly gaining a reputation as a naturally quiet, brave and level headed breed. Horses from the Guy Fawkes River National Park range in height from a large pony to a small hack (Approx 13hh-15hh). They can be almost any colour including true black, with dilute (palimino and buckskin), double dilute (perlino and cremello) taffy and broken colours often seen. Most commonly, they are bay and any white markings are acceptable. Grey is uncommon however grey has been seen in wild and domestic groups.
On April 20, The Heritage Horse Festival will showcase horses that have been removed from the park through this program at the Dorrigo Show grounds. There will be 10 demonstrations of a variety of activities including mounted archery (pictured below), Light Horse, pony tricks, dressage, cutting and the local Christian school are putting on a musical ride. All of these horses were once wild brumbies in the National Park. There will also be a Grand Parade which will showcase all the different sizes, shapes and colours of the horses that have been removed from the Park. There will be reserve price auctioning a few selected horses that are privately owned and going riding horses, this will happen after lunch immediately before the parade. There will be information stalls, trade stalls and merchandise stall and it will be fully catered. This event has created this Association and all that it does now. Take time when changing a feed regime By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Changing your feed regime should be done over four to five days and should not be done suddenly. By making changes slowly, it will reduce the risk of digestive upsets such as diarrhoea or more serious conditions such as colic. There may be a change in weather conditions and this can include moving into the colder months which is what we are experiencing right now. Temperatures in Victoria, for example where we live, have dropped to less than 9C overnight, we have seen a change in our horses’ coats and there is now a need to consider increasing the warmth during the night. There can often be a direct link to dietary changes and health conditions. This can include laminitis and possibly colic so making changes to your feed regime must be done over a period of time to ensure that there is no negative effect. Recommendations for feed nutritional requirements for horses have often been supplied by the National Research Council’s `Nutrient Requirements for Horses’ publication, however these recommendations generally do not take into consideration each horse’s biochemical uniqueness. It is my preference to use recommended optimal allowances for horses as this gives us the opportunity to make changes according to each horse’s individual requirements. Making changes to feed include alterations to grain, hay, pasture and vitamin and mineral intake. The horse has a very unique digestive system - I often say that whoever designed the horse’s digestive system must have been on drugs because it is a very complicated system and extremely sensitive in particular to changes in diet. It is therefore necessary to make feed changes over at least four to seven days. Making these changes over a number of days will also depend on the type of feed that is currently being fed and how drastic
The horse has a very unique and complex digestive system and sudden dietary changes could have significant repercussions.
the change is. For example, if your horse is currently on a very basic natural diet and all you are doing is increasing the same feed, then the number of days taken to do so will not be very long. However if you are changing your horse from a diet that is complex to one that is quite simple, then this change will require a lengthy time. Making changes slowly will ensure that your horse will not experience digestive upsets. The horse’s digestive system requires a certain amount of time to adjust to diet changes. Researchers discovered that by adding fat rapidly to a horse’s diet, it can affect the faeces of the horse by making it slimy, however when the fat was added slowly this problem was reduced. The following recommendations will help you to determine how will you will lower or increase your feed. It has been suggested that when you are increasing the grain in a horse’s diet this should be done in small increment amounts of approximately 230 g per day. It is also important to be aware that feeding a high starch diet will also have an effect on how you will make these changes.
This is a broad view as this amount of grain will depend entirely on what you are currently feeding your horse. It is also dependent on what you are trying to achieve. Are you try to increase energy because your horse’s workload has increased or are you simply trying to increase energy because your horse is lazy? Either way part of this process is a little bit experimental. But the most important thing to remember is time - take time to make any change in your feed regime. If you are changing from one particular type of grain to another, say from oats to steamed and rolled barley this should also be done slowly, generally if you replace approximately 25% of the horse’s current diet with your horse’s new diet every second or third day this would be an ideal change over. If you are reducing your grain, it is a similar process only the other way round, reducing the amount of grain by approximately 230 g per day. With hays, once again it is really important to make your changes slowly, if you are changing from one type of hay to another. Continued page 9

The Horse Report
Horse’s dietary needs can be totally unique  From page 8 There are many different types of hays they can be fed to horses this can include alfalfa, cereal hays, rye hays, Clover hays, native pasture hays, barley straw etc. The quality of hay is also variable, so choosing hays is very important because the nutritional content will alter quite dramatically. By simply smelling the hay is an ideal way, if it smells sweet and fresh then chances are it will be good quality. Hays such as alfalfa and oaten will be of a higher nutritional value, some horses simply do not require hays of this quality in particular those who are prone to laminitis. However, horses are perpetual grazers and they require a high percentage of roughage in their diet for their digestive system to function normally. I cannot stress this enough, I have noticed around the world that in many cases horses are not being fed sufficient roughage, horses that are boxed will suffer if we do not provide them with sufficient hays during the day and night. In Australia, we are quite fortunate in that our horses can live a normal lifestyle and this includes grazing. But we have suffered quite severe droughts for a number of years, in many parts of Australia it is far more severe than others so
we must find ways to compensate and good quality hays can be an excellent replacement. For horses that are being stabled and then turned out during the day it is highly recommended if the pasture is quite lush that horses be turned out on a full stomach, this can reduce the horses grass intake and possibly assist with potential digestive issues. If your horse is being moved to a new property and the pasture is quite different from the previous property then it is recommended to limit the horses time grazing for a number of days to ensure that the horse can become accustomed to the new pasture. There are other issues relating to poor pasture in drought areas, horses on poor pas-
ture run the risk of ingesting bacteria, dirt and other foreign bodies this can cause stress to the digestive system. I always recommend for these situations to use a good pro and prebiotic such as Bioequus this will reduce the risk of diarrhoea, ulcers and possibly even colic. There is no guarantee but it will certainly help the situation. If you own a young growing horse naturally the horse’s dietary needs will change progressively so it is important to contact an expert who can provide the correct advice. Young growing horses require a different approach in many ways to feeding. It is important to get this right because if the horse is not provided the correct nutrient intake as a youngster he will not develop normally. So just to recap, please make sure you make your feed changes over a period of time somewhere between four to seven days and even longer if necessary if the feed changes are quite dramatic. Most importantly ensure that your horse is being fed a natural diet that is suited to the species Please contact me for further advice on (03) 9775 6422 or email me enq@hiform.com.au or simply jump on our website and download our free advice form at www.hiform.com.au

As the chill of winter descends upon the paddocks, our thoughts turn to how we can best make our horses warm and comfortable in the cold, wet and often windy conditions. Although some acclimatization occurs, generally horses shiver if the temperature drops below 17ºC and sweat if it rises above 36ºC. This is called the comfort zone. Outside this 20ºC range, shivering and sweating are necessary to maintain body temperature - but both use up body energy and protein stores, leading to stress and loss of condition. Newborn foals have high metabolic rates and tolerate lower temperatures, but because they have little insulation in the form of hair coat or body fat, they rely on shivering, food intake and acitivity to maintain core body temperature. Rugs and hoods warm from the outside - what is the best way to warm horses from the inside? Most body heat is generated by the digestion of food. Heat produced by digestion enables mammals to maintain steady body temperature in the face of changing environmental conditions. By increasing heat produced during digestion we can reduce the amount of shivering. Reducing shivering and weight loss by shifting the 'comfort zone'. During digestion different feeds release different amounts of heat. Of the energy in meadow hay, 66% is converted to heat, in lucerne hay 42%, and oats and corn, 32 and 20% respectively. Heat liberated during digestion makes the horse warm on the inside and hence they can tolerate colder outside temperatures. The graphs show how heat produced during fermentation allows horses to tolerate different temperature ranges. When a horse has not eaten for a while, ongoing metabolic processes produce 30MJ of body heat. This allows the horse to maintain body temperatue when the outside air (ambient) temperature is between 17ºC and 36ºC.
Concentrates: A balanced concentrate, based on grains, protein meals, vitamins and minerals will supply nutrients not present in hay. As the proportion of hay increases, concentrate intake may drop, so it is important to provide a highly digestible, energy-dense concentrate. The more digestible the concentrate, the lower the amount needed to meet requirements. Crushing and cracking do little to improve digestibility and cause oxidation of nutrients; boiling reduces vitamin content - unless the temperature and duration of cooking are carefully controlled and pelleting reduces calcium and magnesium absorption. Fortunately continuing nutrition research is advancing and refining these older feed processing techniques. Pressure-cooking and steam extrusion of feedstuffs combines and finetunes the time-honoured practices of milling and cooking. It is done under carefully controlled conditions designed to minimise nutrient changes, while maximising digestibility. This increases both energy and protein digestibility, so a smaller amount of extruded feed is required compared to pellets, raw grains and unprocessed feeds offering cost advantages as well as preventing overfilling of the gut especially when hay intake increases in cold weather.
Heat produced during digestion of 3.5 - 4kg of grain yields 10 MJ of body heat, allowing the horse to maintain body temperature, without having to 'top up' by shivering, when ambient temperature is between about 3ºC and32ºC.
The heat generated by hay digestion allows horses to be comfortable from minus 8ºC to 26ºC.
Comfort Zone for Horses Fed 5-6 kg of Hay
From the above graphs, it can be seen that the most efficient way to keep our equine athletes and companions warm during winter, is to feed more hay.
Energy: Two factors increase energy requirements in winter. Firstly, the digestible energy of winter pastures is low; second, energy requirements increase by about 5% for every 1ºC drop in temperature below 15ºC. If the weather is wet and windy as well as, energy needs increase a further 40 - 50%. To sustain a high metabolic rate without losing condition, horses must be given more feed or feed with a higher energy-density. There are several ways to increase energy. Adding an extra dipper of oats or corn; adding oil or using a highly digestible feed. When adding extra grain, it is important to have the diet analysed, because high phosphorus and low minerals in grain could unbalance the diet and supplements may be required - especially for young, pregnant or working horses. Increasing the oil in the diet is a safe and effective way of increasing energy, because oils are high in energy and well digested. Steam extrusion improves protein, mineral, fibre and energy digestibility by up to 40% and releases nutrients that were previously unavailable. The untangling of nutrients during steam extrusion allows digestive enzymes in the small intestine to work up to 100 times faster - increasing nutrient availability and reducing acid, heat and gas production. Body condition: Having energy stored in the form of muscle and fat is important. Thin horses have a higher metabolic rate just to maintain body temperature because they lack insulation. A thick hair coat can mask thinness and weight loss, so it is important to run your hands over your horse regularly to pick up condition loss. Horses that are clipped begin to shiver when the temperature is some 10 - 15ºC higher than those that have a thick hair coat.

Warmth comfort & contentment is the key ‰ From page 13 Warm feeds: Water: Impaction colics are more common in winter, partly because mature hay and pasture have a lower water content than young pastures, but also because horses drink less if the water is cold. To encourage drinking, water should be warmed to 2 - 10ºC. A bran mash: The warm smell of bran freshly mixed with hot molasses promises comfort and contentment. Whilst high in B-group vitamins bran contains poor quality protein and is only 12% fibre - the same as oats. Meadow hay is 38% fibre and lucerne 28%, making bran a low fibre supplement and expensive for the low level of nutrition it provides. Loose manure the day after a bran mash is due not to a laxative effect, but to the sudden change in diet which induces a low grade digestive upset by irritating the gut wall and compromising the bacteria in the large intestine. Never-the-less, bran is very palatable to horses - especially when suffused with warm molasses - making it a great way to tempt appetite and give horses a treat on cold nights. Bran should be restricted to less than 10% of the diet as it contains 9 times as much phosphorus than calcium. Bran is also high in phytates which bind calcium, preventing absorption. An occasional bran mash is not harmful, but a separate calcium supp1ement may be necessary. Steam extruded complete feeds, such as Mitavite Economix, Breeda, Munga and Gumnuts are readily softened to a warm mash and because they are balanced, require no supplements. Cooked grains: Horsemen have long known grain must be processed to improve digestion and reduce risk of gastro-intestinal disturbances. The graph below shows how cooking and processing affect digestibility of different feeds. Crushing and cracking oats and corn has little effect on digestibility. The digestibility of barley increases from 21% to 48% with boiling and to 95% when it is micronized. Pressure-cooking and steam extrusion of corn increases digestion from 29% to 92%.
Horses and Ponies: Ponies evolved in the cold, harsh areas of northern Europe and England, while predecessors of modern day Arabian and Thoroughbred horses evolved in North Africa - adapting to hot, dry conditions. Thoroughbred and Arabians have thinner skin, less subcutanoues fat and are less tolerant of winter conditions. Quarter rugs are necessary when working in winter and extra time is required for warming up before and cooling down after exercise. Ponies developed thicker coats, subcutaneous fat and slight differences in metabolism to survive extremes of cold. Altered insulin sensitivity, a hearty appetite and shunting of blood away from the feet favoured evolution in harsh, cold conditions. Today, these traits increase risk of laminitis - which from a veterinary perspective means there are only 2 types of pony in the world - ponies that have foundered and ponies that are going to founder - making it important to prevent excess condition in winter as risk of laminitis (founder) is higher when spring pastures come through. While on the subject of hooves, foot abcesses, white line disease, wall Page 14
cracks and seedy toe occur more in winter and hoof hygiene must be maintained - especially if exercise is limited. To maintain hoof wall strength the diet must contain good quality protein and adequate levels of biotin, zinc and other minerals. Steam extrusion increases protein and mineral digestibility and both veterinary research and field studies consistently demonstrate the benefits of this advanced method of feed processing - for summer and winter feeding.

Understanding the causes of lameness By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Lameness is common. Very few performance horses do not develop some form of lameness during their career, and undoubtedly, it is the most feared problem for horse owners as it can render their animal useless. Fortunately most cases of lameness are transient and short lived and many more cases are manageable to the point where the horse can perform. Understanding what lameness is, the same as with every other problem, is the key to management. If we know what has made the horse lame, then it stands to reason that if we can eliminate the cause, then a good recovery can be anticipated. Conversely, if the factors that have made the horse lame continue to occur, then the horse is almost certainly going to remain incapacitated Simplistically, there are only three primary causes of lameness, Infection, Trauma, and Degenerative mechanical changes. All of these instigators cause local cell and tissue damage which results in inflammation and it is the inflammation which causes the pain resulting in lameness. Laminitis is also one of the more common causes of lameness, but for the purposes of this discussion, I am leaving it out as it has some very definite causal factors, and more particularly, requires very aggressive and
Infection is probably the most common cause of lameness. specific treatment and management techniques. Immediately we can see how to cure lameness whatever the cause. All we have to do is stop the inflammation. This can be achieved in two ways, medical treatment to alleviate the inflammation and promote healing, or direct measures to eliminate the primary cause of the initial cell damage. In most situations, we are going to use a combination of the two approaches. Infection is probably the most common
cause of lameness, and fortunately, in most cases, is the easiest to treat. Very few horses go through life without developing a hoof abscess at some time. This makes the animal acutely lame but is usually easy to correct by drainage, curettage and medication. Local infections are also common from scratches and puncture wounds to the body and limbs and again these are easily treated. More serious infections involve the joints or tendon sheaths. The Horse Report
Expert to deliver clinic on Western Dressage EQUITANA Australia is pleased to announce that one of the world’s most highly accoladed educators, trainers and judges will be coming to Australia exclusively for EQUITANA Melbourne. Hailing from Florida in the United States, Lynn Palm is a passionate leading lady, and a pioneer across the horse industry. She is regarded as one of the world’s leading clinicians and is unmatched as an all-around trainer, showman, exhibitor and entrepreneur with a first-class reputation. Lynn will deliver a specialist clinic on Western Dressage, as well as three presentations in the general education program. She will also participate in one combined presentation in a forum style session with our other star presenters. Lynn will also treat spectators to a Western Dressage performance at the EQUITANA Australia Open Reining Championships. She has long had a passion for teaching, and for over 30 years has paved the way in educating enthusiasts in horsemanship. Although her performance record is impressive, Lynn said that her primary goal was to educate others on forming correct riding skills and building knowledge to increase the riding longevity of their horses. Her accolades prove her success not just as a successful clinician but also as a competitive horsewoman. She prides herself on performances that include 34 Reserve and World Championships, 4 `Superhorse’ Championships, over 50 special bridle-less exhibitions with the legendary Rugged Lark, including the 1989 World Cup and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. In addition, she was named 2006 AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year and 2000 AQHA Female Equestrian of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation. “I so much appreciated the passion displayed for the horse,” she said. ”I look forward to returning to Australia this year to share my knowledge with horse enthusiasts at EQUITANA.” EQUITANA Australia Event

Acclaimed American horse woman Lynn Palm will be holding a specialist clinic on Western Dressage at EQUITANA Melbourne.
Director Rod Lockwood echoed Palm’s sentiments of educating spectators to the concept of Western Dressage. Also three of Australia’s leading trainers have been selected for the famous The Way of The Horse Challenge (TWOTH) 2014 at EQUITANA Melbourne. The TWOTH Challenge is a three day horsestarting competition, where specially selected trainers will showcase their starting techniques with unbroken horses before a crowd of 3000 spectators. Our finalists this year included colt starter, coach and clinician; Damien Hall from Inverell, NSW; Western rider turned Showjumper; Kane Lamperd from Milawa, Victoria; jack of all trades; Tabatha Moroney from Seaton, Victoria; the cabinet maker turned cowboy Drew Morton from Tyaak, Victoria; and former bronc rider Bruce O’Dell of Maldon Victoria. It was O’Dell and Lamperd who impressed the judges with both displaying years of experience with young horses.Hall was selected as the reserve. Lamperd and O’Dell will join Bianca Gillanders, a previous reserve from 2012, with Hall stepping in if any are unable to perform. EQUITANA Australia will run from November 20-23 at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Campdraft returns home to Tenterfield The first formal campdraft competition was held in Tenterfield at the Tenterfield Show in 1885. The Pony Club Association of NSW is pleased to announce that the 2014 State Sporting and Campdrafting Championship are soon to return home to Tenterfield, where it all began. The Championships are held over the same weekend, Sporting on Saturday 12th April and Campdrafting on Sunday 13th April. The Pony Club NSW State Sporting Championships brings keen competition in Flag and Barrel racing as well as other novelty events. The sport of Campdrafting has its origins in the early days of the Australian stockman, and is believed to have begun in outback Queensland. However the first formal campdrafting competition occurred in Tenterfield. When drovers needed to select individual cattle from a mob to drive them to a separate holding area, the stockman would "cut out" the beast from the mob. A campdraft competition involves riders demonstrating their skills at cutting a beast out of a mob in an enclosure and then manoeuvring it around a set course. This year's championship has attracted entries from all over NSW and QLD. State Sporting has around 180 entries, with
around 130 entries for State Campdrafting. Local host Pony Club Zone 13 have entered around 33 riders in Sporting and 31 riders in Campdrafting. According to Libby Sharpe from Tenterfield Pony Club riders in her zone have been busy preparing for the event. "Last weekend we held a rally day and set the ring up as we have planned for the championships and all the children had a run in each event with Keith Willcocks helping and sharing his invaluable knowledge with the competitors from Tenterfield Pony Club." This will be the first Pony Club Association of NSW State Championship to be delivered according to the Associations mandated Hendra Virus Vaccination Policy. The policy applies to all horses attending PCANSW official events, including State Championships and State Camp from January, 2014. "All horses attending State Championships and State run events (i.e. State Camp) must be fully vaccinated against Hendra virus and applications must include a copy of their current vaccination certificate from the 1st of January 2014," this motion was passed at the Pony Club Association NSW State Council meeting on Tuesday 26th November 2013.
Local rider Shania Koch on Windchester participating in Campdrafting All horses attending the championship have current Hendra Vaccination status and will be scanned for microchip numbers on arrival. Plans for scanning are in place and this is expected to run smoothly. A monster multi draw raffle will be held with tickets being sold locally and over the weekend. Entry is free and spectators are encouraged to attend. "Look forward to seeing you all
here in Tenterfield," Libby Sharpe, Tenterfield Pony Club. The Pony Club NSW State Sporting and Campdrafting Championships are supported by Sport and Recreation a division of Communities NSW, Mitavite official feed partner, Global Entries Online, as well as other local sponsors. Al Fares Dubai exhibition puts equine best on show A love of horses runs in the blood of most Emirates, especially a fondness for Thoroughbreds and the Arabians that have been their companions for centuries. In recent years, this has expanded to horses of all types with the introduction of nationals and expats wanting children to have riding lessons right through to the expansion and development of competition in the Olympic disciplines. Al Fares Dubai 2014 is a biennial exhibition for the Equine Trade and will be held in Dubai on October 29-31 this year. The event is in its 10th year and now attracts over 200 exhibitors from the UK, Europe and America - 20 countries in total. It has grown to become the largest exhibition in Asia and Africa for products and services for horses and riders. The number of Australian manufacturers and providers choosing to exhibit at Al Fares has been growing over the last few years, but this number is about to increase with the appointment of an Australian and New Zealand representative, CV EVENTS. “I am delighted to be able to offer this opportunity for business growth to our part of the world,” CV EVENTS principal, Pip Byrne said. “The UAE now has a very sophisticated horse industry and a very high level of upkeep per animal. “They are keen to advance into the Olympic disciplines and are employing a lot of horse experts from around the world to ensure the very best in training, health and nutrition, equipment, stabling and care. “The annual individual expenditure in the UAE is over $37,000 per horse, which is way above the predicted spend in our part of the world of $10,000.00 per horse annually.” The Sheiks, particularly Dubai’s ruler Sheik Mohammed who is well known for his Darley

Sheik Mohammed is also a respected and successful Endurance rider and runs a team of mostly imported, Purebred Arabians that are kept in training at his Dubai stables. “The stabling and care of these horses is extraordinary” Pip said. “They are hungry for experts of all levels of the industry and for information about products and services that enhance the care level for their horses. “They respect our level of horsemanship and it’s very common to hear an Australian or New Zealand accent in stables throughout the UAE! “Al Fares attracts not only worldwide trade, but also has a VIP invitation list that includes the Sheiks and important members of the equine industry within the region. “Sheik Mohammed is a regular visitor, along with other members of UAE Royal Families.” Considering the level of money spent annually on each horse, attending Al Fares Dubai 2014 will provide enormous opportunities for Australian and New Zealand providers of equine services and products. Many horses of varied breeds are imported to the UAE annually, so Al Fares Dubai also provides an exceptional chance for breeders and suppliers to showcase their stock and make great business contacts.
