Tips for feeding our senior horses By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM There is little more precious than the old horse around the place. These senior horses are often the dependable ones that look after a novice rider or give a young horse some confidence when out on the trails. Because they are so valuable and literally have a lifetime of experience under their ‘girth’, we want to do our best to keep them around as long as possible. While good veterinary, farrier and dental care are important for maintaining the longterm health of your geriatrics, their health care should always be based on a solid foundation of good nutrition and feeding practices. As horses age, they go through several physiological changes that affect how and what you should feed to keep them as healthy as possible. Detailed below are four of the most important of these changes and how you can best manage them from a feeding and nutrition perspective. 1. Teeth wear As a horse gets older, its teeth eventually stop growing and will gradually start to wear down until chewing becomes difficult or ineffective. Worn incisors (upper and lower front teeth) make it difficult for senior horses to graze as the top and bottom incisors need to make good contact in order to shear the pasture

Page 4

There are four steps to take to ensure the health of your horse as it ages. off cleanly. If a horse has worn or damaged incisors, but its molars used for grinding feed are still in good condition, feeding hay will allow the horse to readily get the forage into its mouth simply using its lips and tongue (no need for incisors). Once it is in the mouth the horse can use its molars to grind the forage as normal. Worn or damaged molars mean grinding feed also becomes difficult, so feeding hay is not a good idea as the horse can’t chew it

enough to be swallowed and digested. Feed forage that has already been extensively chopped up or processed. Forages like short-chopped chaff or soaked hay cubes and pellets are good alternate forages for horses with no effective molars. Fibres like sugarbeet pulp and soybean hulls may also be used to increase an old horse’s fibre intake when they are no longer able to graze or eat hay.

Feed high quality protein to older horses  From page 4

So, the key to feeding protein to older horses is to use high quality protein from lucerne/alfalfa, soybean, lupins, canola meal or faba beans to satisfy without oversupplying their requirements.

If you are feeding grains, the grains should always be well processed (boiled, extruded, or pelleted) before being fed so the grain can still be digested even if they are not effectively chewed. Never feed whole grains to senior horses that can’t chew very well. 2. Hindgut loses some function It is thought that as horses age their hindgut loses some of its ability to ferment fibre. This is likely due to changing populations of bacteria in the hindgut associated with ageing. A reduction in fibre fermentation means that older horses get less of the goodness out of forage (which partly explains why old horses need to be fed more to maintain their bodyweight). Because the hindgut is not as effective at fermenting fibre, there should be a focus on feeding high quality forages with fibre that is easy to ferment. Lucerne/alfalfa hay and good quality, soft meadow/pasture hays are preferable to stemmy and mature hays that have tougher fibre to ferment. High energy ‘super fibres’ like sugarbeet pulp and soybean hulls are also excellent sources of fibre for older horses as they are very easy to ferment in the hindgut. Some yeast-based pre-biotics (which are used in many different feeds and supplements) have been shown to improve the digestion of fibre in the hindgut, so they may make a useful contribution to the diet of aged horses. It is also likely that the hindgut of older horses doesn’t support the production of B-vitamins as

As your horse ages you will need to adjust feeding accordingly.

well as a younger horse’s gut does. Thus, it may be necessary to supply more B-vitamins in the diet. FeedXL takes this into account and has raised B-vitamin requirements for aged horses. The production of biotin may also be reduced in older horses so it may need to be added to the diet of older horses. For more information on supplementing with biotin, read our post ‘Biotin – should you supplement?’. As horses age, they also find it harder to absorb phosphorous from the hindgut. Again, FeedXL takes this into account and has raised phosphorous requirements for aged horses. 3. Small intestine loses some function In studies we conducted at The University of New England, we found that an older horse had much lower concentrations of carbohydrate digesting enzymes in its small intestine than younger horses had.

While it was a limited study with small horse numbers, it is likely that as horses age their ability to digest carbohydrates like starch in their small intestine is reduced. This means digesting feeds like grains becomes difficult (which also contributes to older horses needing to be fed more to hold their bodyweight). So, aged horses should always be fed cooked grains that have been boiled, extruded, pelleted, micronised or steam flaked so that the starch they contain is easy to digest. If you suspect your horse has difficulty digesting grains look for a feed that has added starch digesting enzymes or use a supplement that contains enzymes like amylase and amyloglucosidase to help with the digestion of the grains. Older horses also find it harder to digest protein in the small intestine and some with reduced liver and kidney function can also find it difficult to excrete waste products associated with eating too much protein.

4. Mobility is reduced Perhaps the most obvious change in an older horse is some loss of mobility. Because they can’t get around so easily, try to have them in pastures that have the feed and water sources reasonably close together, so they don’t have to travel long distances for feed or water. You will also probably find that if they are kept in a herd, they will slowly fall down the pecking order as they become easier to boss around. If this happens you should feed your old horse separately to avoid him having all his feed pinched by the younger horses higher in the order. Take home message: If you keep in mind the physiological changes occurring in your horse as he ages it will help you to adjust feeding accordingly. Feeding forages that are easy to chew and digest, grains that have been well cooked, increasing the intake of nutrients like phosphorous and B-vitamins, providing good quality protein, and being aware of any mobility issues that may affect feed intake will help keep your oldies happy and healthy for years to come.

Regular forage meals and equine gut health By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM Did you know that the equine stomach never stops secreting gastric acid? So even when your horse is not eating, it is filling the lower part of its stomach up with acidic gastric juices. While the stomach is full, this isn’t an issue as the dense mat of fibre in the gut will stop the acid from splashing around and burning the unprotected lining of the upper section of the stomach. Problems start when horses are off feed for long periods of time and end up with a pool of acid and an empty stomach. Combine that with the movement of being ridden and you get acid splashing up and quite literally burning holes, causing ulcers, in the top part of the stomach. What can you do to help prevent this? - Don’t exercise horses on an empty stomach - Provide a small meal of alfalfa (lucerne) hay before and after exercise. - Provide regular small meals and constant access to hay, especially during times of stress such as trailering. - Provide turnout and grazing time as often as possible Help us to educate people on how a horse’s stomach works so they can understand why forage and horse health go hand-in-hand, plus some very simple things they can do to keep their horse’s stomach healthy.

Provide your horses with regular small meals and constant access to hay to prevent gastric ulcers. Avoiding gastric ulcers in horses Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is a major equine health problem worldwide. Multiple studies have reported an incidence of ulcers in performance horses in excess of 90% of horses training. Ulcers negatively and sometimes severely affect a horse’s ability to perform. They cause pain and discomfort. They may reduce a horse’s appetite which in turn limits its capacity to maintain bodyweight. Gastric ulcers can also possibly lead to the development of vices including windsucking and crib biting. While gastric ulcers in horses have long been

recognised as a major health concern, there is an evident lack of understanding in the horse community about what causes them and how they can be prevented. What are gastric ulcers? Gastric ulcers are lesions that are found in the stomach of horses. The horse’s stomach is made up of 2 major regions, the upper ‘squamous’ area and the lower ‘glandular’ area. Gastric ulcers are categorised by their location in the stomach being either squamous gastric ulcers or glandular gastric ulcers – these are two distinct diseases with different risk factors.  Continued page 9

Tips to help avoiding gastric ulcers in horses  From page 8 Why do gastric ulcers occur in the squamous or upper section of the stomach? The horse evolved as a grazing animal and, when left to their own devices, will eat for 17 hours or more per day. This means they are constantly chewing and salivating, and their stomach is always full. Because of this pattern of eating, their stomach never developed an on-off-switch for gastric acid production. The equine stomach secretes gastric acid 24hours a day, regardless of whether they are actually eating or not. When you think about this from the perspective of our modern-day horses, it is not an ideal situation. Many horses are now stabled with limited access to free choice forage, or they work, compete, and travel, leaving them in situations where they go for extended periods of time without feed. When a horse eats it produces saliva and one of saliva’s roles is to buffer the gastric acid in the stomach. So, when they aren’t eating, they aren’t salivating but they are still secreting gastric acid. This results in a pool of unbuffered (and therefore very acidic) gastric fluid accumulating in the lower section of the horse’s now empty stomach. The lower part of the horse’s stomach was smart enough to protect itself from gastric acids, and, provided it is well-nourished, is able to produce enough sticky mucous to protect itself from its own acid secretions. But the upper part of the stomach doesn’t have this same protection. In a grazing horse, the stomach is always full, so the top of the stomach was never exposed to gastric acid simply because the forage a horse ate stopped the acid from ever splashing up there. However, in modern-day, meal-fed horses, the stomach is often empty, and the upper section of the stomach is left totally exposed to the highly acidic fluids that are allowed to accumulate in empty stomachs. When a horse with an empty stomach trots, canters, gallops, or even simply tenses up its abdominal muscles the gastric fluids are splashed or squeezed up onto the unprotected upper section of the stomach. Simply put, the acid starts to burn holes in the stomach wall lining. If you allow this to occur repeatedly, the horse will eventually develop ulcers. What major factors influence the risk of squamous gastric ulcers? Low forage intake – Not having free access to forage and not being provided with additional forage increases the risk of squamous ulcers. Feeding Frequency – Feed deprivation such as might occur during transport and long periods between meals lowers the pH in the equine stomach and allows the stomach to empty, both of which will increase the risk of gastric ulceration. High starch diet – Horses receiving large

proportions of grain (or starch) in their diets are at increased risk of squamous ulcers Exercise – As a horse exercises, the pressure inside the stomach increases, which forces the highly acidic gastric contents from the glandular area up into the unprotected squamous area. Horses in training are known to have a higher incidence and more severe gastric ulceration than horses not in work. How can feeding management reduce the risk of squamous ulcers? Some feeding management practices that may help reduce the incidence of squamous ulcers are: Don’t exercise horses on an empty stomach Providing 1-2kg of lucerne hay prior to exercise helps to prevent acidic contents from the lower region of the stomach from splashing up onto the upper region where it can cause squamous ulcers. The saliva created while chewing the hay also helps to buffer the acidity in the stomach. Using lucerne hay has the extra positive benefit with the buffering effect from the high content of protein and calcium in lucerne itself. If you don’t have or feed alfalfa (lucerne) hay, then your horse’s regular hay will also work well. Provide constant access to pasture or hay Allowing the horse to feed continuously during the day and night will help to reduce the likelihood of squamous gastric ulcers developing. However, free access to forage does not always guarantee your horse is eating enough forage. For example, overgrazed pasture (<2.5cm or 1 inch in height) does not provide adequate amounts of fibre to protect the stomach. Likewise, providing free access to a round bale does not guarantee your horse is consuming adequate amounts. This may be due palatability of the hay or an already depressed appetite from gastric ulcers. Horses need to be consuming at least 1.5 to

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

2% bodyweight in forage per day. Providing supplementary hay to horses on pasture and feeding a set amount of hay per day is the easiest way to ensure adequate intake. The importance of constant access to adequate amounts of forage ensures good amounts of saliva being produced by chewing, which has a buffering effect on stomach acid, and fibre’s ability to create a ‘ball’ in the stomach to limit acid splashing. If horses need to go periods without access to forage or having a feed, this should be limited to no more than 5 hours. If you are travelling long distances with your horse, and it is safe to do so, providing hay in a hay net during travel will provide the horse with an opportunity to continue eating during transport. If this is not possible, take regular breaks and provide small forage meals during the trip. Reduce starch in feeds Reducing the amount of starch in the diet by reducing or removing grain-based concentrate from feeds is recommended. Due to the different starch content of various grains and feeds, maximum intakes are based off starch intake. No more than 1 gram of starch per kilogram of bodyweight per meal should be fed and maximum of 2 grams of starch per kilogram of bodyweight per day. For example, barley contains on average 60% starch. For a 500kg horse, the maximum amount of barley which should be fed is 800g per meal or 1.6kg per day split over two meals, which is the equivalent of 480g of starch per meal. For horses requiring a high energy diet, grain-based feeds can be substituted with a combination of high energy fibre such as alfalfa pellets, chaff or alike, beet pulp, soybean hulls, and high fat ingredients such as oilseeds and oils. If your horse already has gastric ulcers, you must treat them. Talk to your veterinarian about the best treatment regime for your horse.

Techniques for working with agitated horses By DR ANGELIQUE BARBARA As a bodyworker you will definitely come across agitated or anxious horses from time to time. In this article, I will give you tips on how to work with them and minimize stress. The first step in calming the horse down is the determine the source of their stress. The main reasons a horse will be agitated and uncooperative during a bodywork are: * They are in pain and they are anticipating that you will cause additional pain. * They are buddy sour and are experiencing separation anxiety from being away from their buddy. * They are in an unfamiliar environment during the session or there is a lot going on in the barn (feeding, horses being tacked/untacked, people and other animals moving around). * There could be a trust factor (who is this new person?). * There could be a dominance factor (who is in charge?). Relaxation techniques Horses are very good at picking up your energy so it is essential to ground yourself before a bodywork session. To ground yourself, take deep breathes, remain calm and focus on what you want to accomplish during the session. Be determined that you will succeed because the horse will pick up on any anxiety you are experiencing. Move the horse to a quieter, more familiar area (such as their stall) and if necessary their buddy stand nearby. If they can see their friend, it will drastically reduce their anxiety. Focus on massaging the TMJ and neck first on both sides. Horses that are anxious will usually have tight necks and reducing the tension there will help them relax. Once they realize you are helping, they will normally relax and learn to trust your hands. Try utilizing essential oils such as Lavender. Put a few drops on your hands and let him smell it. This will often take the edge off and can be relaxing for you as well. Learn about our aromatherapy course. https://holistic-animal-studies-byangels-animalsllc.thinkific.com/courses/equinePage 10

Anxious horses will usually have tight necks and reducing the tension there will help them relax. aromatherapy-certification-course For horses suffering from a lot of pain, do not try to palpate them right away. The horse will feel like you are attacking them and get defensive. Instead tap softly down their topline, neck, withers and back. Continue for a few minutes and then try to softly palpate. You may need to tap again whenever you find a new sore area on their body. Horses who are dominant, and aggressive can be tricky to work with because you do not want to be bit or kicked. Stallions may even try to mount you. You need to establish dominance with these animals to reduce their anxiety (and your own). If a horse tries to bite you, you can poke them quickly with your fingers on the side of their mouth. This mimics the reaction another horse would have to counteract a nip. Many times the horse will lick and chew and settle down after this. Massage along the bladder meridian to relax the horse and prepare them for the bodywork session. You can also conduct Craniosacral Therapy with these horses if you are trained in the technique. Finally, don't give up and be patient. Remaining confident and calm will allow 95% of these horses to relax and enjoy their session. Do keep your safety in mind.

HERBAL TUNE UP WHY YOUR HORSE NEEDS A SEASONAL DETOX By Karyn Campbell Naturopath & Equine Herbalist

W H Y

D E T O X ?

Detoxifying your horse at the start of every season with high-quality herbs can offer several benefits, promoting overall health and well-being. Here are some reasons why this practice might be beneficial: Remove Toxins: Over time, horses can accumulate toxins from various sources such as environmental pollutants, feed additives, and chemicals. Herbal detoxification can help remove these toxins from their bodies. Boost Immune System: Certain herbs can strengthen the immune system, making horses more resilient to seasonal illnesses and infections. Support Liver and Kidney Function:: The liver and kidneys are crucial for filtering out toxins. Herbs like milk thistle and dandelion can support these organs, enhancing their function. Improve Digestion: Seasonal changes can affect a horse’s digestive system. Herbs like peppermint and fennel can aid in digestion and prevent gastrointestinal issues. Enhance Coat and Skin Health: Detoxifying can result in a shinier coat and healthier skin, as toxins can often manifest as skin problems. Increase Energy Levels: Removing toxins and improving organ function can lead to higher energy levels and better overall vitality.

W H Y

D E T O X

Reduce Inflammation: Some herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation and associated pain, particularly beneficial for older horses or those with joint issues. Adapt to Seasonal Changes: As seasons change, so do the demands on a horse’s body. Detoxifying can help them adjust more smoothly to changes in weather, diet, and activity levels. It's essential to use high-quality herbs to ensure the best results and avoid potential contaminants. Consulting with a Equine Herbalist before starting a detox regimen is also recommended to tailor the approach to your horse's specific needs and health conditions.

Feeding supplements to benefit horses By ANTOINETTE FOSTER BSc Nutrition, Medical Herbalist, Nutritional Therapist ©2023 Overfeeding or underfeeding supplements and feeds can lead to deficits in vital substances, which over time may cause various health issues and reduced performance. Standard "complete" horse feeds-such as pellets, muesli, and grains combined with vitamin supplements and good quality roughage-often do not contain adequate levels of these essential nutrients. By adding true pure form supplements such as Hi Form CompletaVite, OxyDane or BreedPlus, you can improve your horse's performance, health, and overall well-being. Always look for supplements that are natural, safe, effective, economical, and easy to use. They provide everything your horse needs

Understand what essential nutrients are in your horse supplements to manage overall health an well-being.

to perform optimally and stay healthy. Research in Australia and abroad has pro-

vided more precise guidelines on the nutritional needs of horses and how these requirements change with growth, exercise, and reproductive states. Feed analysis from various climates has revealed that many commercial feeds lack certain nutrients that are critical for a horse's health and performance. In some cases, the levels of individual nutrients can be imbalanced or excessive, which may negatively impact a horse's well-being. Soil which has been continuously used for feed production (hays or grains), tends to have depleted nutrient levels, resulting in significant deficiencies in the crops produced in these areas. The traps If you are using brand X feed which claims to have all the vitamins and minerals etc based on the recommended feed rate, your horse may well receive a reasonable level of these nutrients, but if you have a horse that does not require the recommended feed rate then there will be a discrepancy and simply topping up with another supplement will then create an imbalance. See photo showing a sample of the type of commercial feeds and ingredients I am referring to. Important note: Older horses that are not in work and have access to good quality pasture may obtain sufficient major nutrients, minerals, and vitamins. However, they often still require a daily additive.  Continued page 15

Be careful of ‘additives’ in supplements  From page 14 Numerous nutritional supplements are available for horses, but many contain simple minerals that are poorly absorbed, requiring excessively high amounts to provide any benefit. Additionally, many of the vitamins included are of feed grade quality and are not fit for human consumption. Some supplements even contain industrial-grade ingredients, additives like colours and flavours, and preservatives. In contrast, Hi Form formulas contain no additives and are made exclusively from oral-grade ingredients (suitable for human consumption). Hi Form's, unique formulas fit into the Natural Therapy category, containing a synergistic blend of nutrients, including mineral tissue salts, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, and certified organic herb extracts, which can yield exceptional results. Take the Hi Form challenge: change your horse's feeding regimen to incorporate one of our daily supplements and a natural diet including a natural feed such as Hi Form Complete FibrePlus or AlphaFibre. Your horse will experience significant benefits. Feeding your horse a natural diet is not only the healthiest choice but also the most cost-effective. Within just 6-8 weeks, you will start to notice positive changes-improvements in your horse's skin and coat condition, as well as more relaxed attitude and temperament. Overall health and well-being will enhance, with further benefits, such as reduced feed requirements, visible within 2-3 months. The anatomy and physiology of horses have not changed; therefore, it makes sense to feed them according to their species. The results will speak for themselves. Do you know your horse’s normal vital signs? NORMAL VITAL SIGNS FOR ADULT HORSES (AT REST): * Heart rate 38-44 beats per minute * Rectal temperature 37-38.5ºC * Respiratory rate 12-20 breaths per minute * Gums should be light pink and moist, and capillary refill time less than 2 seconds * Sounds of the intestines should be heard on both sides of the abdomen * 6-10 manures and 3-4 urinations should be passed every 24 hours * A 500kg horse drinks 20-25 litres in 24 hours How to find your horse’s vital signs: Your horse should always be safely restrained while taking vital signs. Some horses may become fidgety during parts of this examination, so extra care should be taken. Heart Rate (HR): Place the flat side of the stethoscope head behind your horse’s left elbow, in front of where your girth would sit. Count each “lub-dub” sound as one beat. Normal resting heart rate: 38-44 beats/minute Temperature: Lubricate your thermometer (eg with KY Jelly). Stand safely to the side of your horse’s rump. Gently but firmly hold the tail at the base, and lift it to one side. Insert the thermometer into the anus, holding it firmly flat

Be prepared know what your horses vital signs are and how to check them

against the wall of the rectum. When the thermometer indicates it has finished reading, remove it and record the reading. Normal temperature: 37-38.5ºC Respiratory Rate (RR): Watch your horse’s flank and rib cage rise and fall as he/she breathes. Count each inhalation (breathe in) and exhalation (breathe out) together as one breath. You can also listen for the respiratory rate with your stethoscope, or watch the flare of the nostrils. Normal resting respiratory rate: 12-20 breaths/minute Oral Mucous Membranes: Lift your horse’s lips to show the gums – what colour are they? If they are any shade of purple, blue or red, if so call your vet. Feel the gums with your finger tip – do they feel moist, or dry? Press your finger firmly

against the gum, then release. You will notice under the pressure of your finger, the gum is almost white but when you remove your finger the colour returns. Watch to see how long the gum colour takes to return to normal. This is known as the capillary refill time (CRT). Normal gums: Light pink colour, and moist. Capillary refill time: Less than 2 seconds Abdominal Sounds: Listen with the stethoscope on each side of your horse’s abdomen, above and below the flank area. The sounds you hear will vary, and can be described as gurgling, rumbling, gaseous etc. Sounds also vary in frequency and loudness, depending on which area you listen to. You should always be able to hear sounds in all quarters if using a stethoscope, however with the naked ear they may be difficult or unable to be heard.

Radiographic proof in clinical results By Dr ANDREW WATTS BVSc Equine Veterinarian BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collagen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callus postinjury. Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs. Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. More information on these products can be found at www.vetgold.com.au

The Horse Report

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

so These significant benefits are also nd enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and n’t “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly an sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can s, also be applied to surface wounds, lp minor cuts and skin abrasions to help cprevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

The Horse Report

Celebrating Virgil: A champion's retirement By JO JENNINGS Equestrian Australia As the sun sets on a remarkable career, the Australian equestrian community gathers to celebrate the retirement of Shane Rose’s beloved horse, Virgil (by Vivant). This extraordinary horse has not only achieved great success in the sport but has also captured the hearts of athletes and fans alike. Virgil’s retirement marks the end of an era, one filled with fantastic performances but also an unbreakable bond with Shane.

Photo by Libby Law Photography Bred by Michelle Hasibar and owned by Shane and Niki Rose with Michelle, Virgil is a large, striking horse known for his athleticism. His ability to navigate challenging courses with precision and strength earned him a reputation as a formidable competitor and he has certainly made his mark in the world of Eventing alongside Shane. Throughout his career, Virgil competed in various events with Shane at the helm, the pair achieving excellent results, including top finishes at national and international competitions.

Virgil's recent performance highlights include 20th place in Individual Eventing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, 1st Place in the CCI4*-S, Land Rover Horse of the Year 2024, in New Zealand, 1st Place in the CCI5*-L, Adelaide International Horse Trials 2023 and Team Silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021). Shane says about the now 19year-old Virgil, "He's always had a very good ability to jump and he's a big horse but he's actually put together very well.  Continued page 27

Contributions to Eventing will be remembered  From page 26 “So the fact that he's always found jumping so easy meant that he's been able to stay sound and has competed in the sport within himself, not having to over exert or reach his limits,” Shane said. “He's obviously talented in lots of areas but I think when you've got a horse that you can then keep sound for long periods of time, then you get to see the best of them when they're at their most educated." When asked about his most memorable moment with Virgil, Shane said he thought of Adelaide 3DE a couple of years ago. “It was at that stage going to be his last event until things didn't go to plan and we had to pull him out of retirement a bit early,” he said. “For him to be able to finish a five star on his lowest ever finishing score (28.5) at that age was pretty cool." When asked about what retirement will hold for Virgil, Shane said he will look after the babies. “He's got a couple of yearlings and a couple of two or three two-year-olds at the moment that he hangs out with in a nice big paddock,” he said. “I felt like whilst it would have been nice for him to do a bit more, I didn't want to go down the showjumping route, because in order to do it properly, the horses need to be in more work than I felt he needed to do. “I thought about giving him to a young

Photo by Libby Law Photography rider, but didn't want them missing him into fences. “He's very easy to ride, but he also needs quite a strong rider and I felt the person that would suit him would probably be too good for where he's at in his life.

“So we decided that he could just look after the babies and hang out in the front paddock." Virgil’s contributions to the world of Eventing will be remembered for years to come.

Update to Australian helmet standards By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia (EA) is updating its helmet standards in light of the recent changes to the FEI standards: EN1384:2023 with a quality testing label is now an approved standard and will be added to the list of approved standards and published on the website. VG1 remains approved by the FEI but only with a quality testing label (eg BSI Kitemark). The BSI kitemark (or other similar quality testing labels) indicate that as well as having originally met the specified standard the product must have passed quality testing (quality testing monitors the ongoing quality of the product according to the original standard). EA recognises that members may have purchased products allowable under the previous EA standards list which accepted VG1 without a quality testing label. As lack of ongoing quality testing does not necessarily mean that a product will not meet the original standard, EA will continue to accept existing yellow-tagged helmets and will yellow-tag any as yet untagged helmets with this standard up until 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 a new tag (of a different colour) will be required to indicate compliance with the updated standards and a progressive system of retagging existing helmets that meet the updated standards will be introduced during 2026. More information will be provided prior to the roll out of the new tags. The objective of the helmet standards is to ensure that our members can easily identify helmets that will provide them with the best protection that current research suggests. The tag is to assist event officials in identifying helmets that are manufactured to the correct standard. If you have any concerns or questions, please email safety@equestrian.org.au Page 34

List of the applicable international testing standards for Protective Headgear - Update effective 7 November 2024 Note: the FEI is currently undertaking a full revision of the “FEI List of the applicable international testing standards for Protective Headgear”. During this time, the present version applies. The only change from the previous version is the inclusion of harmonised European standard EN1384:2023.

“Protective headgear” as defined in the FEI General Regulations must comply with at least one of the international testing standards listed below. In addition, the product must have passed quality testing (quality testing monitors the ongoing quality of the product according to the original standard). Products complying with the above are marked and labelled accordingly. x

Accepted international testing standards: - British standard PAS 015 (1998 and any subsequent updates). - Protective headgear carrying a CE mark referencing EN1384:2023 or VG1. - Australian standard AS/NZ 3838 (2006 and any subsequent updates). - Australian standard ARB HS 2012. - American ASTM F1163: 2004a and any subsequent updates. - American Snell E2001 and E20016 (Please note: Snell combines a standard with subsequent quality testing; therefore, no additional quality testing mark is required).

x

Quality testing labels include, but are not limited to:

Important: x Although protective headgear can help to keep a rider/driver as safe as possible, no headgear can prevent serious injury under certain circumstances. x

Perfect fit and the correct adjustment of the retention harness are essential to the performance of protective headgear. Please always try on the product and ideally have it fitted by someone that is qualified to do so. Avoid buying online, even if you bought the same model before, as individual differences may exist.

How to Prepare for the Australian Bush Fire By WWW.RANVET.COM.AU Living in Australia during the summertime does present the high chance of bush fires. There is quite a lot you can do in advance to help make sure that in the event of a bush fire near you or your horses, everyone has the best chance of staying safe. As with your regular bush fire plans, preparation is key. Bush fire safety plan Include your horses (all your animals) in your bush fire safety plan. Know whether you plan to stay or evacuate in a variety a possible situations. Make sure your family are aware of what you have planned well in advance. Have an emergency backup person to help you or that can evacuate in your absence. Have important information handy including property PIC number, vet contact, identification papers (microchip number, brands or photos) of your horse and emergency services phone numbers. Evacuation If you do decide you will evacuate, leave well in advance to avoid entering a period where it is too dangerous to leave. A good idea is to pick the alert level at which you will go. Make arrangements in advance as to where you will go i.e. the local show ground, sale yards, racetrack or friends/family. Consult your local DPI for assistance in emergency livestock evacuation sites in your region. Paddocks Always keep paddocks well-maintained whether you are staying or leaving (you may in a serious situation not get the chance to leave). Keep paddocks mowed/slashed to reduce vegetation, create fire breaks around fence lines. Make sure there is a good water supply, if possible put you horses in the largest paddock that is safe and available, the bigger the better if fire is approaching, or leave internal gates open to allow horses to move freely. If you have the ability invest in a fire fighting pump and a rainwater tank do so, if you are on town water, the supply might be cut during a fire. Also secure hoses and fittings at all available taps. Floating practice Make sure all your horses are educated and

Be well prepared if you may need to evacuate and ensure your horses are able to load on a float.

good to float. The last thing you want during an emergency is a horse that won’t load. Making sure your float and or truck is well maintained and ready to go at a moment’s notice is also a good idea. Emergency kits Have a well-stocked emergency kit, include things such as a torch, radio, wire cutters, extra head collar, towels, water bucket and a first aid kit including electrolytes. Pack enough feed for at least 3 days. If a fire is approaching and you have made the decision to stay, don’t take fire fighters for granted. Monitor conditions Remain calm, monitor the forecast and weather changes, communicate with family and cooperate with authorities. Remove all rugs, synthetic headcollars, bandages and fly masks from your horses. If you do need to use a headcollar try and only use a leather one with a cotton lead which will not melt like plastic/synthetic ones and beware of medal fittings as they will get hot. Do not lock horses in stables or small yards, a horse’s instinct is to run, and they may injure themselves if locked in a confined space, not to mention the structure itself may catch fine. You can write your phone number or PIC number on your horse with specially made grease crayons for marking livestock in case

your horse does get lose. Make sure all external gates are closed so your horses can’t get out on the roads for everyone’s safety. Water/feed If you do have to leave your horses make sure they have enough feed and water for several days in case you can’t get back into your property for a few days. Once the fire has passed and you can go and check your horses Call the vet immediately if your horse has suffered any burns or other injuries and apply first aid whilst waiting for help. Check for hot spots in the paddock before returning your horse to their paddock, hooves and legs can still get burnt after the fire has passed if there are areas still smoldering. Look out for partially burned structures or trees. They may be at risk of falling or obscuring the paddock. Clean and provide fresh water in case of contamination, and good roughage if pasture has been burnt out. Make sure the fencing hasn’t been damaged. If you keep your horse on agistment having a good conversation with the property owner about fire emergency plans is a good idea, it will help you make important decisions when needed. All the same preparation is required whether you agist or own your property.

If you do decide to evacuate, leave well in advance, don’t take fire fighters for granted. www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

Sue Spence – Horses Helping Humans™ By www.horseshelpinghumansaustralia.com

Sue Spence has more than 30 years in health centre management, education and life coaching. As a motivational coach, Sue was sponsored by Nike for her contribution to the fitness industry. Sue’s HELP program, developed to teach instructors how to recognise eating disorders and exercise addiction within the industry, was approved by Fitness Australia to educate fitness professionals. Sue has 40 years equestrian experience in show jumping, eventing, and has specialised in natural horsemanship (horse whispering) for the past 25 years, successfully competing in many natural horsemanship shows. The specialised Horses Helping Humans Program has grown out of the well-known and highly regarded work that Sue Spence has been doing for many years in using horses to help humans learn effective communication skills and body language skills. Demand for the program quickly grew throughout the local youth organisations. Sue Spence is an educator who is known as an outstanding communications coach, a public speaker, workshop facilitator, author, and teaches communication skills to corporate groups, underprivileged youth and other disadvantaged groups using the principles of natural horsemanship. Sue was the first person to identify that different personality profiles exhibited differing

body language when under pressure. Her business Horses Helping Humans™ has been featured in numerous reports, events, programs, newspapers, and magazines. Sue specialises in personality profiling and body language analysis. Her four horses represent a modern adaption of The Four Temperaments theoretical framework, and her unique work demonstrates how choleric, melancholy, sanguine and phlegmatic personality types have their own conditioned responses when under pressure. ‘Horse whispering’ meets ‘people whispering’ within her innovative equine-assisted life coaching program that integrates interpersonal communication skills, body language, emotional intelligence and personality types. Sue says she is “simply making each person-

ality conscious of the body language that is hindering their communication”. When in the arena, Sue and her horses facilitate immediate change in those they help, hence her great demand from youth organisations, support workers and mental health specialists. Meanwhile, global opportunities as a keynote speaker and panel member have allowed her to bring this magic into boardrooms and more communities. Sue works with multi-national companies, psychologists, psychiatrists, small businesses, schools, event organisers, community groups and celebrities. She has unlocked effective communication skills for people ranging from CEOs – to actors – to disadvantaged youth. Sue’s commitment to the program and the community has been recognised through awards such as : 2022 McPherson Community Achiever Award 2021 Gold Coast Women in Business 2018 Heart of Woman Awards 2016 Gold Coast Business Woman of the Year Award winner for ‘Creating Change’ 2014 Gold Coast Women in Business She has been spreading her messages of selfacceptance, anti-bullying, effective body language skills and respect to the world. Currently, Sue works with horses and clients on the Gold Coast, and her vision is to see people trained to deliver the program across Australia and New Zealand.

New Year Challenge - Try new things with your horse By TANJA KRAUS This week I had some time to finally spend some quality time with Saffi, my youngest. Saffi is a 3 year old quarter horse, and even though I have owned her for about 18 months, she has just been 'out growing' in the paddock and I havent done much with her other than the worming, feet trimming and the occasional training session. As we move into 2025 and she will be getting started under saddle, so I took her to our creek for a swim, and it was a great opportunity to get to know her a little better. She was a little worried at times and it was interesting to observe what her reactions were when she got worried or frustrated, and what methods she used to try to communicate with me. This is a fantastic start to our conversations, and gives me some vital information on how she communicates and responds in different situations. When was the last time you did something 'new' with your horse, and used the opportunity to learn a little bit more about them ? That's your challenge for the week - do something new and tell me, what did you discover about your horse?

Saffi's first swim (with me - swims in the dam on her own all the time!)

Mary Hanna wins Pacific League Final By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA In winning the Pacific League (PAL) World Cup Final, Australian Dressage rider Mary Hanna and Ivanhoe are now eligible to represent the PAL at the FEI Dressage World Cup Final to be held in Basel, Switzerland from 2-6 April 2025. The Pacific League qualifying events were held at Dressage & Jumping with the Stars, Werribee CDI-W in March, Equitana CDI-W in November and the Victorian Dressage Festival, CDI-W – LF held just over a week ago in Werribee. It was a very close competition, with Mary just taking the win from New Zealand competitor Wendi Williamson. When asked about how it felt to win the Pacific League this year, Mary replied, “I was a little bit surprised actually.” “The horse had been going well and was in good form, but there was some pretty stiff competition, so it was a pleasant surprise,” she said. “I was very happy with his test. He was very consistent and really on point. I was really happy. To be honest, I really didn't expect to win." With regards to her plans to travel to the World Cup Final in Switzerland next year Mary said it was definitely her intention to go. “It’s a great honour to represent Australia at these World Cup Finals,” she said.

Mary Hanna on her win of the Pacific League Final with Ivanhoe - Simon Scully Photography “I've done five before, three on Mosaic, one on Sancette and one on Umbro. “I was set to do my sixth one on Calanta and went over there and unfortunately just the week before the event she went lame. So I was terribly disappointed with that." Mary thinks Ivanhoe will be a great horse to take to the finals. “Ivan is really a good horse and suited to doing a World Cup Final,” she said.

“He's got a great temperament. I think he will handle the atmosphere and everything very well." Mary will base with her old coach, Patrik Kittel, in Germany. "That's where I was before the Paris Olympics,” Mary said. “I was training with him and it will be great to be back there." When asked about whether there are plans to do other shows when over there Mary said no because she found that

notrmally didn’t work. “That's the mistake I made with Calanta,” she said. “I went and did another show and then things just started to go wrong. “I find it's best not to unless there is long time before you head off.” EA congratulates Mary on this fantastic win, and wish her all the best for what will be her 6th World Cup Final (having qualified for 7).

Double TT Fantasy

Price: $POA. 15.1 hh Reg: ANSA, PT Welsh, Riding Pony, Pt Arabian, SHC and EA Chestnut Mare Sire: Rathowen Touch of Fame Dam: Double TT Fancy Me This is an extremely hard sale for me. I have had Nancy since she was 7 months and she has never put a foot wrong anywhere therefore I think she is wasted with me and perfect for a teen that is ready for the next step up into a small hack. She has been trained and ridden by Taelar Williams from Select Stables and now has completed her second season with sucess. With little work she can go from the float to the ring with minimal fuss. Nancy has been entered for Led, Ridden and Breed classes at Royal Canberra Show 2025 and with full stabling. She will also be entered for the Sydney Royal 2025. Ideally, Nancy is suited to an experienced child rider or intermediate adult looking to excel in the Show Ring or even dressage. No problems at all to farrier, float, teeth, chiropractor and clip. Nancy is a very pampered horse that has clean legs and a beautiful temperament. Definitely an asset to any stables. Only approved to the best of homes. Vet Check more than welcome. He is an easy pony to handle and no dirt to ride. He does require a small work down at the Royal shows. Has been ridden by my 9 year old and 12 year old daughters but I would say would benefit from an older rider to get the most out of Kenny. Kenny did qualify in the Open large pony for the 2022 Grand Nationals. Kenny is currently in paddock condition which is reflective of the price. Kenny is a high calibre pony that will be highly competitive at the highest of levels. For sale as my daughters cannot give him enough time due to polocrosse, stock horse classes, camp drafting and cheerleading. Contact: Rachael Ph: 0413 139 773

Ollie is a liver chestnut, 14yr old thoroughbred gelding, officially measured at 16.3 ½ hh and is registered with the SHC and has an OTTB passport. Perfect to float, clip, shoe and show prep. He is well behaved off property and loves the show environment. He has had a successful season so far, winning at most outings. Some of his past placings include Runner Up Large Show Hack at the 2024 SHCWA Classic qualifying him for the SHC Grand Nationals. He recently competed at his first Perth Royal Show 2024 winning Novice Hack over 16.2hh and the Open Hack over 16.2hh. Due to his size, he would excel with a confident rider and handler. He will be at the SHC Horse of the Year on the 12th of October should anyone wish to view him out. Please only serious inquiries for Ollie and this is a very hard decision he will only go to the best of homes. He is located in Upper Swan.

Molly has been to working eq training days and to siec and never puts a foot wrong We believe Molly would excel best in the dressage/ show ring as a new comer and an excellent pony club mount as she is great with obstacles and fun games She was broken in by her 12 yr old rider who has unfortunately outgrown her. She’s not your typical five year old she is such an incredible child’s pony. Contact: Amaline Ph: 0490 314 643
