The stars are coming to EQUITANA EQUITANA, the Southern Hemisphere’s premier equine spectacular, will present a range of international clinicians that will be both informative and entertaining. Kyra Kyrklund will be delivering the specialist dressage clinic in Melbourne this year and, husband and fellow dressage trainer, Richard White, will be coming with her. Kyra has successfully combined both competing and training students in top international competition for more than 30 years. She has successfully trained and competed 15 horses in international Grand Prix dressage and continues to train many successful international dressage riders, while still competing herself. As a special attraction for Dressage fans, Kyra will also be presenting a demonstration on how to put together a ‘winning KUR’ before the freestyle championships on Saturday, November 17. Richard White has assisted Kyra with training, both at home and at competitions since 1990 and also works with many other international riders. Mary King is a British Olympic equestrian sportswoman whose list of accomplishments is nothing short of astounding. She has represented Great Britain at five Olympics, winning one bronze medal and one silver medal in the team event-

Josh Lyons and Richard Winters will be providing two dedicated horsemanship clinics - and both will be delivered jointly by two of the USA's great equine behaviouralists. Josh Lyon's early life was spent learning from and training with his famous father, John Lyons.

Ali Al Ameri is best known outside the UAE for his problem solving and starting techniques for horses. Ali has worked his magic on horses in the UK, France, Brazil, Argentine, Uruguay, Chile and Australia, where he worked in the Northern Territory, starting a herd of brumbies that had not had any close contact with humans at all. Ali's skill as a horse trainer is also recognised in by film maker, Walt Disney, who has used him in several productions including The young Black Stallion. Hendra virus continues to cause concerns Biosecurity Queensland is working with the operators of a Cairns equestrian centre to manage the latest case of Hendra virus infection which occurred late last month. The centre has been quarantined. Laboratory testing has confirmed that a horse that died on the property was infected with the virus. Queensland Chief Veterinarian Dr Rick Symons said Biosecurity Queensland officers had been on the property assessing how many other horses may have been exposed. “There have been quite a few other horses moving on and off the site in recent weeks,” he said. “We are conducting tracing of these horses and speaking to the owners.” Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said to date, public health experts had identified five people who had contact with the infected horse near Cairns. “Public health staff have con-
ducted thorough assessments today and all contacts have had a low level of exposure to the sick horse,” Dr Young said. “We acknowledge that these are difficult circumstances for these people. “Our public health staff will continue to consult with them to ensure they are provided with all the information and support they require. “I can also confirm that the woman assessed as having a high level of exposure to a horse infected with Hendra virus near Rockhampton, remains in a stable condition. “The patient does not have any symptoms of Hendra virus infection. “ This is the sixth Hendra virus incident in Queensland this year. One property at Rockhampton and two properties near Mackay remain under quarantine after recent confirmed cases of Hendra virus infection. The latest ‘Guidelines for veterinarians handling potential Hendra virus infections in horses’ has been updated and is

The current situation in NSW remains stable. Last year, 10 horses on eight properties died due to infection with Hendra virus. These cases occurred between June 30 and August 28. All affected properties were in north eastern NSW. No further cases have occurred in NSW since August 28, 2011.
Nevertheless, horse owners should remain vigilant and continue to take steps to minimise exposure of their horses. The presence of flowering and fruiting trees in or near the paddock in last year’s cases demonstrates the importance of keeping horses out of paddocks in this period, when trees are most attractive to bats. Any fruit lying underneath trees should also be picked up and disposed of once the bats have moved on, before the horses are returned to the paddock. Hendra is a notifiable emergency animal disease. If you suspect your horse has Hendra virus keep everyone away from the horse and call your veterinarian immediately. The vet will notify the local Livestock Health and Pest Authority or an inspector with NSW DPI, if they consider the case highly suspect for Hendra. If they are unavailable, and the illness is progressing rapidly, call the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Be present when your mare foals By GEORGIA KIRBY “We lost our foal last night.” “If we had been there we could have saved it.” These are the words I get greeted with from devastated horse breeders, time and time again over the breeding season. All the planning, nearly a year of waiting and the financial and emotional investment, destroyed within minutes and in many cases it's preventable - just for the sake of being there when your mare foals. I hear many people say, “horses have been foaling by themselves for thousands of years, you should leave them alone to foal”. This is a very naive way of thinking. Yes, wild horses foal alone, very successfully and natural selection culls out those that don't. Once the horse was domesticated, we took that natural selection from them, we placed them in artificial surroundings, we feed artificial feeds, we then cross breed them. All of this leads to increased risk of foaling complications, and it is now our responsibility, to monitor and ensure the well being of our mares and foals. Being a responsible horse breeder means you need to be present when your mare foals, so you are able to get assistance when things go wrong. Situations like, the sack did not break and the foal suffocated. The foal’s shoulders were stuck and the foal was lost and nearly lost the mare as well. The foal was mal presented and both the mare and foal were lost. These are just a few of the complications that occur and in many cases the losses can be prevented. There are products on the market such as foaling alarms and foaling predictor kits, which can help alert you to when your mare will foal. Don't leave it to fate, protect your mare and foal, when they need you most. Dealing with diarrhoea in adult horses By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Diarrhoea in the adult horse can be a very frustrating and difficult issue to deal with. As always, the only way to have any real chance of controlling the problem is to work out what is causing it, and then take steps to manage and cure. Fortunately most cases of diarrhoea are transient and self-curing and many people delude themselves into thinking that the particular magic potion or remedy they used was the ‘cure’ whereas in reality, most cases are simple and due to some minor digestive upset that has quickly been self-remedied. Those that are not so simple can be very serious and extremely frustrating to control. The first essential in dealing with diarrhoea is to have some understanding of the horse's digestive system. The horse has a rather unique hind gut digestive tract and the horse is primarily a herbivore which means they are designed to consume and digest grass, forage, and other plant material. The stomach and small intestine in the horse play a very minor
role in the horse's digestive system and proportionately, are relatively small in comparison to the caecum and large colon of the horse. The large colon is very large and the contents are very liquid and soft. As the food leaves the large colon and enters the relatively short small colon, the ingesta is still very much fluid. Incredibly, in the passage of only a couple of metres of small colon, almost all of this fluid is absorbed by the normal horse and we have the typical dry, well-formed faecal balls as the food enters the very short rectum to be passed out as our expected pile of manure. It only takes some relatively small change in either the efficiency and ability of the small colon to absorb the water, or the speed of transit of the material to result in loose or watery manure. There are a number of very serious degenerative or infiltrative disease processes that can result in a reduced absorptive efficiency, and if your horse is unlucky to develop one of these problems, then a cure can be very unlikely. Fortunately most problems are the result of some increased

The Digestive system of your horse speed of transit and are inflammatory in nature. We have to attempt to work out what is causing the inflammation. The first inclination of most owners is to presume that the horse has developed some ‘infection’ and they expect antibiotics to be able to fix the problem. The fact is that a primary infection is very rarely the cause, and if it is, then the bacteria that is usually responsible, salmonella spp., will almost certainly not be susceptible to the administration of antibiotics. This is not because of resistance, but because the germ lives and hides in the myriad of roughenings and proliferations that exist on the mucosal surface of the inner lining of the intestine and antibiotics cannot get any access to the bugs. Salmonella infection can in fact be an extremely serious and often life threatening disease. This type of infection particularly occurs in horses subjected to some severe form of stress or managerial change such as transport or some other illness or major surgery. These horses require serious intensive care and usually admittance to a hospital for management. Some of these horses that recover from an acute illness can be left with chronic diarrhoea which can be difficult to cure. The infection that causes most diarrhoea is in fact parasite infection. Fortunately the advent of the ivermectin family of wormers has dramatically reduced the incidence of parasitic diarrhoea, but there are still many cases of ‘resistant’ worm infections that require some very aggressive therapy to control. Without doubt, the most common cause of diarrhoea is some type of change in the nutrition, or
feed, that the horse is consuming. The most important thing to understand about the horse is that 90% of the digestion of the food that is eaten is carried out by microbial fermentation of the material in the lumen of the large intestine. Millions of bacteria and protozoa attack the food material as it enters the large bowel and convert it to fatty acid compounds which are absorbed and processed by the horse to produce essential nutrients. This means that all normal horses have a very large population of mixed bacteria always living in their gut. This population has evolved and developed over time to cope and deal with the particular food that the horse is eating. Any change in feed, particularly if sudden, can quickly change the local environmental conditions in the bowel and cause certain bacteria to die and allow other forms to proliferate. It is this sudden change in the make-up of the micro flora of the gut that can result in different chemical composition and can often cause inflammation which results in a quicker passage of food and loose manure. In many of these cases, the new population stabilises, the body becomes used to them, and the inflammation stops. Obviously the task for the management is to analyse the feed and determine any changes. Certainly if the horse has suddenly gained access to some unusual or undesirable food, the fix is to remove it and return the horse to the feed it is used to. Another relatively common cause of diarrhoea is the ingestion of sand. Horses typically spend a large part of each day grazing and foraging around on pasture. Continued Page 13

From page 12 If the grass is sparse or short, and the soil has a content of sand, then the horse's lips are constantly licking up particles of sand and swallowing it. This accumulates with time in a particular part of the large bowel and builds up, resulting in inflammation, again shortening the transit time, less water is absorbed resulting in loose stools. Examination of the horse can detect this by either finding sand in the manure that is passed, or hearing the very typical and incredible sounds that the accumulated sand makes when listening with the stethoscope (pictured). Treatment obviously is impossible unless the ingestion of sand is stopped. In most cases, simply doing this will result in a cure. Oils and psyllium husks can also be helpful. Drugs can be a cause. Certainly administration of some antibiotics can induce diarrhoea. Fortunately we have a fairly good idea of what can go wrong here and the ‘deadly’ antibiotics

are rarely given nowadays. A very common drug that can result in diarrhoea is phenylbutazone. Some horses can react adversely to this resulting in ulceration and inflammation of the lining of the intestine. Early recognition and withdrawal of the drug usually results in a cure. The drug is very commonly used in the horse and owners should be very observant of their horse to recognise any possible problems. Do not also forget that certain types of salts can cause diarrhoea and some processed feeds can have a relatively large content. Always be aware and assess this. Examination and diagnosis of the problem requires a comprehensive assessment of the horse. Obviously analysis of the diet and history of the horse is critical and can often be the most rewarding. If we are assessing a horse with
diarrhoea, obviously we will perform a full and complete clinical examination. Blood tests should be carried out as they can be an indicator of inflammation, or in one of the very serious forms of diarrhoea, low protein can be a critical indicator. Blood analysis will also assess liver and kidney function. We also usually collect peritoneal fluid from the abdomen of the horse and perform a rectal biopsy which can give indications of some generalised bowel diseases. W e have many therapies and treatments that can be very useful but they must be targeted at the particular problem and so a full and thorough examination and assessment is mandatory. All the old favourites such as anti-ulcer medications, and materials that supposedly ‘line’ and protect the gut such as kaolin, pectin, and charcoal, unfortunately are usually useless in the horse because of the very large surface areas of the large colons and the enormous doses of material that are needed to have any real effect.

Diarrhoea could be a symptom not a cause ERIC TIGHE www.healwithease.com This is a interesting topic to write on - it could be a simple open and shut case that is easy to fix or will clear itself with a change of diet or maybe a worming. But it could be a symptom of something a lot more sinister, only time and working through the process or a good testing process will find the answers. So let’s look at the symptoms for a minute -loose stools that quite often have a smell to them. The severity and how long has the symptoms being running for are things to look at. 1. The diarrhoea is related to a feed change either quainty or quality this is often just a disruption to the program but with a few adjustments will be easy to fix. We do have some basic tools that are great to help at this stage which can quite often speed up the recovery process. Which will minimise the effects on your horse, this is quite important if you are away competing or getting ready for a competition. 2. At this stage it is more of a problem that has been lingering around for a while that is annoying but doesn't seem to effect condition or performance at a level we can recognise. However it can affect the ability of a horse to cope through the training process or as you lift the demands on the horse the diarrhoea will start to take its toll on condition, performance or behaviour. Most of the time a horse has had all the basic changes made in a endeavour to fix this feed ,

worming , etc. At this level we need to look at the diarrhoea as a symptom not a cause. It could be a emoninal issue that is causing the problem, so once again work with some of the basic tools and start to look at issue with more of a holistic approach in mind. 3. Now this is were it starts to get interesting as all of the first level strategies have been tried, we are at the stage that most people have tried not just one but a couple of different of antibiotics to no avail in fact it seems to be getting worst. The diarrhoea is now visually effecting health and condition. We now have to take care of health at all levels keeping the horse hydrated is of importance. Once again working in a holistic approach we have had some very good results at this stage. 4. At this point things become chronic and if it is a young foal or a older horse you could be quite a bit of trouble. The system has really been compromised and it needs help quickly as to help with hydration and the basics of life there is not much anyone can do. As I have stated, we need to look at diarrhoea in horses as a symptom not a cause so there are many things it could be, from our end we have found it could be any one of the following or a combination that causes diarrhoea in horses. Feed, emotional, stress related, bacterial, viral, chemical, or a genetic predisposition. All of which we can be help with using natural energy remedies along with a sound testing process to identify what is going on.

Understanding what dental vets check By Dr SHANNON LEE BVSc MACVSc Eq Dent So your pony needs a dental. Pony club, it's a great way to spend a Sunday and you can have a lot of fun and learn useful skills, however your ability to attend pony club and have fun with your horse or pony is directly related to their health and wellbeing. Of course there will always be a lot to think about when caring for a horse or pony and there are three key areas that always need to be looked after - feet, food, and teeth. By looking after these areas correctly we ensure that if our pony is otherwise fit and healthy then they are ready to attend pony club and enjoy it as much as we do. In this article we are going to talk about dental vet checks on a horse’s mouth - their teeth and gums. There are some basic points that every horse owner/horse rider should know about their horse’s teeth, this means that mums and dads need to know this stuff to even if they don't actually ride the horse. So what do we need to know? Textbooks on dental care for horses are very large and it isn't possible to cover all of that information here so let’s look at some simple facts and some points to check when choosing someone to examine your horse’s mouth and treat any issues. OK how many teeth does a horse have? The answer varies as not all horses have all teeth but an adult horse will have between 36 to 44 teeth. What kind of teeth do horses have? Most of the teeth a horse has are very different from our teeth, they are called hyposodont teeth and they are very long with most of the tooth being under the gum in the horse’s jaw. As a horse chews it wears down the tooth and eventually the tooth will wear out, for this reason it is very important not to skip a visit from your dental vet as many of the horses and ponies at pony club are older and if problems are left untreated the result is often very bad. Often when the horse sees a dental vet, teeth will need to be removed and things that could have been treated quickly and
simply are now much harder and more expensive to fix than before. So what do I need to do to look after my pony? Horses and ponies who are ridden regularly should receive dental checks from a dental vet at least twice a year. The vet should ask a lot of questions about the horse and how it eats and what it is like to ride. It is a good idea to have your bit and bridle handy for the vet to examine and if you have spent time watching your horse eat it before the vet arrives it will be easier to answer the vet’s questions. After the vet has asked their questions, they will administer some pain relief to your horse, this will also relax the horse and when they ‘wake up’ they won't remember anything unpleasant. The vet does this because they understand that there are sensitive nerves in the teeth, cheeks; gums and tongue of your horse and that your horse would feel pain if the vet didn't give pain relief before beginning to examine your horse’s mouth. The vet should then have a good look and feel of the outside of your horse’s head and examine the lips and front teeth carefully for things like cuts and broken or dead teeth. Next a speculum (a special device to keep the horses mouth open) is placed on the horse and the mouth will be thoroughly rinsed out. The vet needs a very bright light to see all the way back to the back of the mouth. They will also use a mirror and probe, just like your Dentist does to examine all surfaces of your teeth. Once they have finished examining the mouth the will talk to you about your horse and begin correcting any problems they have found. Because horses have Hyposodont teeth (remember) and their top jaw is much wider than their bottom jaw , as they chew they create very sharp
points of enamel ( the hardest substance in the body) on the outside of their upper cheek teeth and on the inside of their lower cheek teeth. These sharp enamel points cause painful ulcers and cuts to the cheeks and tongue, and so a dental vet will remove them (being careful not to do any damage to the nerves of the teeth). Sometimes horses who have missed a dental exam maybe very sore in the mouth because of these ulcers and may be unhappy when pressure is applied to the reins, this makes the situation dangerous as the horse is in pain and the rider has less control over the horse. The more the rider pulls on the reins to control the horse the
more pain they cause the horse. While removing sharp enamel points is a very important part of caring for your horse’s teeth, horses get all the dental problems that people do so there are a lot of other things that commonly occur in horses mouths. Things like broken or missing teeth, loose teeth, gum disease, overgrown teeth, cancer etc. Did you know that the most common disease of horses is gum disease? Around 70 percent of horses are affected so if your not treating your horses for gum disease you should be. Can I tell if my horse needs a dental? Quite simply the answer is no. Some horses will show signs of pain or discomfort when eating or being ridden but many horses in severe pain will show little sign of a problem, so don't be tempted to skip a dental exam. Identifying poisonous plants and grasses KERRY MARSH, B.Ed.,B.Ag.Sc. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis - Equine Nutritional Balancing Recently I was interviewed on ABC radio in Brisbane relating to the 23 horse deaths in Koralbyn. It became quite apparent that there is a lack of education regarding certain poisonous plants and grasses that are fatal to horses. In fact many horse owners were interested in an education campaign. In this article ,I am going to focus on Johnson grass (sorghum halepense)and black nightshade (solanum nigrum) as they are common in paddocks and both are deadly to horses. Many horse owners overlook the necessity of maintaining soil health. Basically this interprets as regular applications of lime and often applying minerals. Soil that becomes acidic allows for the growth of unwanted weeds and grasses that thrive in low pH soils. Paddocks that are overgrazed and over stocked are also targets for dangerous weeds. Generally, it is assumed that horses will not eat grasses/weeds that are toxic. However, when there is little feed in paddocks and horses are hungry, they will often

ingest poisonous plants. Hay can often be a source of nightshade or Johnson grass so it is wise to be vigilant and know about the source of your hay.
Black nightshade is easily recognisable by its black berries on the stems.
Black Nightshade Black nightshade is an annual herb that has become more prolific since the drought broke. It is widely spread in Australian and is known to be "a weed of waste spaces and a weed of cultivation" (1). There are many species of nightshades but
the most common in Australia is the black variety. It is easily recognisable due to the small black berries on the stems. A recent example of black nightshade poisoning was when a pony was locked in small yard due to founder. Around the perimeter of this yard were many black nightshade plants. After 24 hours, the pony was found dead and most of the nightshade had been eaten down. The toxins in nightshade are tropane alkaloids. In horses, symptoms range from ‘mild digestive upset, to severe colic, seizures, dilated pupils, tremors, constipation and or hemorrhagic diarrhea’ (2) dependant upon how much nightshade has been ingested. Mortality in horses is usually caused from the colic. Treatment if provided in time is activated oral charcoal and or large doses vitamin C and dolomite. Johnson Grass Johnson grass also known as sorghum is a noxious, vigorous perennial weed which grows abundantly throughout Australia. It is common in many properties, on roadsides and often comes in purchased hay/silage. ď Continued page 17

Common weeds in the paddock can be deadly From page 16 It is characterised by a purplish tint on the seed head. It is a troublesome weed due to the amount of seed it produces. The recent case of 23 horse deaths in Koralbyn is also a dire warning about Johnson grass. I was engaged to conduct hair tissue tests on two of the surviving horses after the relevant authorities failed to provide a definitive finding. Their hair results showed very high levels of manganese which is common in horses on a grass diet. This then prompted a closer look at just what species of grasses was present in the horse's paddock. The horses were moved from a nearby property to a new lush growth paddock and a few days later 23 had died. Eventually it was determined that Johnson grass was indeed present in that paddock and that the horses had the symptoms of cyanide poisoning. Johnson grass is quite a nutritious feed for horses and cattle provided animals are not allowed access to it in the rapid growth stage. Johnson grass has the potential to release

cyanide if the conditions are right. Drought, frosts and wilts result in the plant releasing cyanide. “Leaves are typically higher in cyanide than stalks” (3) which are what the horse prefers to eat. Horses should not be allowed to graze Johnson grass until it is about 60cms in height. Deaths from Johnson grass poisoning are common. Low levels of cyanide are all that is required for death in horses. Unfortunately, cyanide poisoning is very dif-
ficult to detect post mortem in horses. Symptoms of Johnson grass/cyanide poisoning are flaccid tail paralysis, convulsions, urinary and bladder dysfunction, rear end incoordination, ataxia, horse goes down. If found early enough and removed from offending pasture, horse may recover. “The antidote of choice is sodium nitrate with sodium thiosulphate”. (4) Large doses of Vitamin C and dolomite would also benefit. To prevent plant/grass poisonings in your horse, it is essential to observe your paddocks, know where your hay comes from, know your horse's behaviour and maintain soil health. Do not overgraze or overstock your paddocks as where soil is bare, weeds proliferate. Pony clubs show their skills at polocrosse More than 150 competitors converged on the Bi-Centennial Equestrian Park in Camden NSW for the 2012 Bombers Australia State Polocrosse Championships last month. The event, hosted by Pony Club NSW Zone 19, began with a fitness check with team 7, the Advanced Under 17 team from Zone 19 awarded the best presented team of the carnival before entering the round-robin part of the competition. The finals saw team 5 from Zone 26 defeating team 1 from Zone 19 to take out first place in the Under 13's age group. Team 4 from Zone 23 defeated team 3 from Zone 19, five points to four. Team 6, Zone 16 Canberra Riding Club defended their hard won 2011 titles to also take out the 2012 Championship in the Under 17 age division with eight points to six in the final game defeating team 9 from Zone 26. Team 7 from Zone 19 placed third six points to five over team 8 from Zone 20. In the Under 25 age group, team 18 from Zone 20 also the 2011

While in the Under 25 age group Clayton Dodwell from Tumburumba Pony Club, Zone 20 was pleased to win the award. Each winner was presented with a rug courtesy of sponsors Camelot rugs. Mark McInnes was thrilled to win the best and fairest in the Under 17s. Ebony Ramm, Under 13 age group winner of the Best and Fairest award also had a great weekend. Steffen Peters, Olympic and World Equestrian Games medalist and USEF Equestrian of the Year 2011 and Jonah Oliver, a leading sports psychologist, combine to present the Mitavite Ultimate Master Class, an inspiring new three day program that completely overhauls the master class concept. Day One - six horses and riders each present for individual training sessions with Steffen Peters. Combinations are two amateur riders, two professionals and two FEI combinations. All are aiming to finesse their understanding of training with, as Steffen Peters says, a fair and kind approach. Day Two - sees Jonah Oliver join Steffen for the sessions. They work together with the riders on preparing their mindsets to achieve the best outcome, whether from a daily training session or a competition. Day three - sees all six riders ride through a test, suitable for their competition level, and supported by Steffen and Jonah. The audience will be briefed with the highs and lows of the tests, with feedback from the riders themselves, and ways to help improve their performance. Following on from each day's program, Steffen will ride through a training session of his own, giving personal insights into his training methods and techniques and will complete a session with Jonah on mentally preparing for a training session or competition on day two and, on the final day, ride his own test. The Mitavite Ultimate Master Class will be held at the new, state of the art, Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture, from Friday, November 2nd to Sunday, November 4th November. The Master Class is open to anyone interested in observing and learning from a true master of classical horsemanship and an exceptional sports psychologist, as they train horse and rider combinations from ama-

Dealing with horses who shy By LINDA PARELLI Mother Nature built in the response of shying as a defense mechanism. However, humans see it as a vice. Imagine you are walking through a graveyard after midnight. You're only nine-years-old and you are holding your father's hand. Suddenly, something rustles in the bushes. Your father jumps 10 feet and turns to look with his heart pounding, hand tight on yours, shaking with fright. Then he realizes that it was just a rabbit and seeing that you are still scared, he tries to take you up to the bushes to prove there is nothing to be afraid of. How would you feel? Now consider an alternative scenario. The bush rustles, your father's hand hardly flinches, he never loses the rhythm of his stride or takes his eyes off the path, or tightens his hand on yours. Calmly he says, “those darn rabbits.” Which father would you rather have as your leader taking you
through this scary graveyard in the middle of the night? If you substituted a rider as the father and a horse as the young child, which rider do you think the horse would prefer? In a herd environment, the alpha (or most dominant) horse is the leader. If your horse was following his favorite alpha horse down the trail, his confidence level would be at its highest. He would feel safe and sure about the decisions being made for him, and he wouldn't feel the need to stay alert for danger. All horses know that this is the alpha horse's job. A major key in solving the problem of shying is for you to be perceived as ‘alpha’ by your horse. The most common mistakes that people make with horses that shy are: a) Blaming or punishing the horse for shying b) Losing their focus The best two words I can give you to explore are: Savvy and Focus. Savvy Try to think like a horse rather

Parelli’s The Seven Games program will help you earn your horse’s trust and respect
than a human. Horses, as prey animals, are big chickens. So, don't expect your horse to be the brave one! Punishment will not work for prey animals because they don't understand it. If they are acting out of fear when they shy and suddenly the predator (human) on their back comes to life, it really compounds the problem and the shying will become worse. The answer lies in preparation for a situation. In preparing a horse to be ridden, most people lunge him in mindless circles until the horse is tired enough to behave. In order to prepare your horse mentally, emotionally and physically, it would be better to play The Seven Games (groundwork in Parelli Level 1) prior to riding. The Seven Games are based on what alpha horses do to establish their dominance in the herd and gain another horse's respect and trust. The alpha horse causing the less dominant horse to circle is only one of those games. The other six games include moving him backwards, forwards and sideways, with physical or implied pressure and even causing the other horse to squeeze over, under or through a small space. Becoming your horse's alpha causes him to follow your suggestions without question. If you are calm, he can be calm. If you become scared, he will prepare to flee. From this perspective, your steady emotional state is critical to your horse's confidence. So in preparing your horse to accept you as alpha, deal with him on the ground first, just like another horse would. Play these same seven games in order to gain your horse's respect and trust. Once you have his respect on the ground, have challenged him by sending (not leading) him through, over or under questionable objects such as jumps, logs, tarps, under trees, into trailers, past plastic bags hanging on things, etc. then you can transfer that leader-follower confidence
to the saddle. Focus Focus is the most powerful tool you can have while riding. When your horse is shying he is using his power of focus against you because he feels vulnerable without his alpha horse. The technique I use while riding is to be aware of the things my horse is apt to shy from and focus beyond that point at least 100 yards. This gives the horse a feeling that you, his new alpha, are not concerned, so why should he be? The most common mistake that riders make in this area is they focus on the problem. They try to ride up to the scary thing to show the horse it is not going to hurt him. This is human reasoning not prey animal reasoning! Sometimes the rider just gets surprised from the shying and naturally clamps his legs and hands. Both of these approaches cause the horse to feel that you, his alpha, is very concerned about this ‘thing’, so he should be too. We all want our horses to be calmer, smarter, braver and more athletic but they can't be until we are! FRASER COAST ALLBREEDS SHOW The 2012 annual Fraser Coast Allbreeds show will be held at Maryborough showgrounds Indoor Arena on the 8th and 9th September. They have over $2,500 in prize money on offer as well as sashes, trophies, trophy rugs, an a wonderful selection of prizes. There is 72 breed classes and champion and reserve in every breed. What’s Happening MULLUMBIMBY SHOW The Mullumbimby Show is back and will be held on November 10th and 11th at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds. On Saturday there will be a monster truck show, beef cattle, poultry, talent quest, showgirls, old engines display, vintage motorbikes display, snake man, dog and duck show, pavilion, arts and crafts, cooking, school displays, animal nursery and all the usual side shows and food stalls. What’s Happening THE BEAUDESERT SHOW The Beaudesert Show will be held on September 8th and it will include a ‘Hunter Spectacular’ in this year’s program including saddle and working hunters. Fences for the working classes will be over natural fences and three weeks prior to the show, there will be a practice day held for hunters to jump the fences. On the day there will be $100 for all champions and $50 for all reserve champions. A NSW experienced hunter judge will officiate. TOP OF THE RANGE ARABIA SHOW The Downs Arabian Club Inc. is holding the annual Top of the Range Arabian Event for 2012 over the weekend of October 27 and 28 at the Toowoomba Showground. A focus of the event will be the youth feature and Hi Point Youth of the Show along with a range of Amateur classes. The program includes purebred and derivative halter program including Crabbet and Egyptian events. New halter classes have been added this year for derivatives with 50% or more Arabian blood The very popular the Top of the Range Gala Event will again be a feature and the show hunter and bridle path hack have been split into purebred and derivative sections. LOCKYER HORSE EXPO On September 8 and 9, the Gatton Show Grounds will be the host of the first ever Lockyer Horse Expo and Exclusively Equine Welcome Show. This unique concept has caught the attention of Horse Talk TV, an Australian made program that is televised in Australia as well as many overseas countries and they have scheduled the weekend for one of their series three shoots. Exhibitors can become a part of it - organisers are keeping the costs as low as possible and anyone associated in any way with the horse industry is invited to have a 4m by 4m indoor booth for $30 for the Saturday or $50 for both days (limited numbers of these available) or set up their outdoor exhibit for $70 on the Saturday or $100 for both days. The public are allowed in for free and with big numbers expected, this is a way of gaining big exposure for exhibitors for the smallest possible cost. The site is limited to approximately 60 at this stage, so they will be 'first to pay, first to have a site' basis. Exhibitors will need to set up their own display. There is also a car boot sale on the weekend for $20 each day for anyone who has some second hand gear or extra stock to try and move (no animals permitted to be sold or exhibited at the car boot sale). The show on Sunday will be an informal, fun, and friendly, a t-shirt and jeans show; there are big prizes and an entire ring of just walk/trot classes. There are hacking, rider, Dressage and Western classes with prizes all day for people ‘caught being nice’ to others and every competitor gets a ribbon. The aim of the show on Sunday is to encourage more competitors to shows, do more with their horses and promote spending within the industry. The Lockyer Horse Expo and Exclusively Equine Welcome Show is, of course, for all those interested in any way in horses - whether they compete at international level or just liked ponies when they were young. Organisers are hoping individuals, studs and businesses who take part in the Lockyer Horse Expo see it as a great opportunity to 'sell themselves' to the horse industry. The South East Queensland horse industry should have an opportunity like this to present themselves to all horse and pony enthusiasts. Finalising things like invitation/birthday/anniversary or business cards, reports & book covers, ebook graphics, CD & DVD labels/covers, website graphics & images can make the whole process overwhelmingly daunting and possibly even completely down your project. You probably already "have a handle" on how to use a printer and just need the fancy bits done. Perhaps you've already completed the CD/DVD hard work but now you've stalled on the final leg and feel disillusioned. Don't dump the project just yet though ! We can do the graphic design aspects for you even utilizing your own images in the product. You can even send us a sketch of your ideas and we can set up the design and let you see it over the net and finalize any finer details if necessary. If you're not too competent at printing out CD/DVD labels we can print directly on to those and send them to you for recording etc. We do not however do any general printing jobs. There are many printing companies who can do even printing onto T-shirts etc and no doubt you have a local business which would be really keen to help you out.
