Dressage festival aiming to offer something for all As the winner of the 2010 and the 2014 Equestrian Queensland Event of the Year Award, this year’s Horseland Queensland Festival of Dressage has high expectations to live up to. Now in its ninth year of bringing a unique and spectacular day full of Dressage education, training and entertainment, organisers guarantee this year will be the biggest event on Australia’s equestrian event calendar. This year, the main arena will feature the Festival Master Class series with guest international coach, Bjarne Elefsen. Presented by Pryde’s Easifeed, Bjarne’s Master Classes will demonstrate the training for starting the dressage horse, through to developing collection and the work for progressing towards FEI and Grand Prix. Keeping your horse cool, happy and hydrated By TIFFANY BENNETT The warmer months will be here soon and I for one am not looking forward to how sweaty and fatigued I get during and after a competition. I always make sure I drink lots of water the morning of competition, pack myself electrolyte drinks to keep hydrated, drink litres of water throughout the day then turn the air-conditioning up on my way home. Sound familiar? If we are this exhausted how are horses feeling and how are they travelling home in the hot metal box (float)? Horses are not nearly as efficient as us in keeping themselves cool. During humid and hot conditions a horse can heat up at a rate more then three times faster then humans. Horses have only 40% of the body surface area to body mass compared to us making their ability to dissipate heat much less efficient. A dehydrated horse in an environment that is hot and humid cannot get rid of generated heat, which can result in heat stroke. This may happen when transporting in poorly ventilated floats, when they do not drink or in overweight or long coated horses. Additionally, horses can sweat up to 20 litres per hour where humans only three litres per hour. To make matters worse for our equine friends, their sweat contains higher levels of electrolytes than us. Even though the hot conditions may not be putting too much stress and strain on us, our horses will be experiencing strain. Electrolyte balance plays an important part

in keeping horses hydrated. Like us, horses have a thirst response, a physiological mechanism that lets them know they need a drink. When large amounts of electrolytes are lost, their system becomes unbalanced and even though they are thirsty they may not drink. But don’t despair or give up your Gatorade, there are some simple strategies to help our horses keep hydrated and allow them to perform to their full potential. Ensure that salt is part of your horse’s daily diet. Horses require a minimum of 25 grams per day and up to 200 grams per day pending on environmental conditions and workload. The best way to ensure your horse is getting enough salt is to allow them to self regulate

by providing a salt block or loose salt adlib. Prepare your horse before you travel or head to your event. As well as ensuring salt is in their diet, provide your electrolyte the day before. Be aware of your horse’s water intake. Horses drink between 25 – 45 litres of water per day. Offer both plain water and the electrolyte supplemented water whilst your horse is under any heat stress Cool your horse down properly, walk your horse until their breathing returns to normal Leaving water on your horse can stop their ability to cool themselves. Ensure you scrape the water off your horse to allow the skin to cool and therefore let more heat escape. This is important in humid conditions. Work towards rehydration through electrolytes given as a drink. Once the horse has drunk sufficient electrolyte solution then other products may be used. Offer an electrolyte-based drink to your horse after any activity such as floating, competition, heavy work that may lead to dehydration. Continue to provide electrolyte supplementation for another 24 hours after your horse returns home. It is important to recognise your horse’s electrolyte requirements may differ depending on the type of activity undertaken. You should discuss your horse and their electrolyte needs with your vet.

Long distance transport is stressful to some horses. Nervy horses shake and tremble, working themselves into a lather, and drip sweat, which can cause fatigue, and dehydration, particularly during hot weather. Travelling in cool weather or early morning reduces the chance of heat stress on horses. It is helpful to ensure that horses are given adequate electrolytes and fluids in hot weather. It is a good idea to check the skin by the “pinch test” to estimate the relative degree of dehydration at least two to three days before travelling. This allows sufficient time for absorption of the electrolytes, as well as the restoration of fluid balance. Ideally, horses should be offered water to drink every two to three hours during long trips in hot weather, and off-loaded every four to six hours for a walk and “green pick”, provided they are quiet and can be held safely on the lead. Alternatively, horses can be given half a biscuit of dampened good quality lucerne hay in a hay net, then this will relieve boredom, settle the horse and provide some additional moisture. Travelling at night is usually much cooler and longer spaces between rest stops can be made, whilst still providing relief from travelling and allow the animal to ‘stretch’ its legs. During hot weather, open the front vents in an enclosed trailer to improve air flow. Intake of dust must be avoided during the trip, as this can increase the risk of respiratory problems, and “travel sickness” on long journeys, particularly after competition. It is useful to provide shavings, sawdust or absorbent material on the floor, to soak up sweat dripped onto the floor and urine and moisture from droppings at the rear end. It will make it less slippery and reduce scrambling on the floor during cornering and stopping. If a horse is a particularly nervy traveller, or under hot conditions, it sweats and dehydrates during the trip, so electrolytes can be given over the tongue in the float before unloading. After trips of two hours or more, it is a good idea to take horses for a walk on a lead for five minutes or so to help them loosen up before stalling them, once settled in the stall, a drink of cool water can be offered to provided.

One horse is particular used to be reluctant to load but now seems altogether happier both loading and travelling – now he actually dozes off. The horses arrive in better condition and more importantly for me, in a good mood! I believe that the ride inside the car is also slightly better. The difference is subtle but I’m sure that the device dampens the effect that the float tends to have on the car as well as vice versa. The Morgan Horse By Beccara Lloyd MHAA President Arguably one of the most versatile breeds of horse is the world! The Morgan horse originated from America around 220 years ago, they can be traced back to one stallion named Figure. In 1789, as legend has it Justin Morgan was given a colt to repay a debt, he grew to be a tough little horse who proved himself time & time again in tests of strength, stamina and endurance, he could out work the best of the heavy horses & outrun the fastest horses who came to challenge him. By the 1850's the Morgan Horse was the chosen mount for both Cavalry & civilian riders. Intelligent, beautiful, bold & proud, they had developed into the most popular breed in the United States, they could work all day on the farm, then be hitched up to the carriage and gracefully take the family into church. The breed have contributed their

genes to many of the newer breeds of toady like the Quarter Horse, American Saddle Horse & Tennessee Walking Horse. The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) holds the stud book for the Morgan breed. Australia's first Morgans arrived over 100 years ago and were imported to improve the trotting breeds. Morgans purposely imported for breeding by Mr & Mrs George Reed arrived in 1974 being a stallion & two mares. Ever since numerous Morgans have been imported to Australia for breeding and we now have around 450 Purebred Morgans & 500 Part-breds. Morgans and a love of the breed By BECCARA LLOYD MHAA President My love of the Morgan breed began many years ago when I was employed to train and campaign a little colt by the name of Tui's Nimrod he had just been started under saddle and imported from NZ. After breeding, riding and training horses of various breeds my whole life, I was kind of blown away by this horse’s presence, honesty and intelligence. I soon worked out that he could be shown something once and simply remembered it. Before long he was quite a well-trained handy little horse for dressage, showing, jumping, trail riding etc - I would think it and he would do it easy! I went on to train many Morgans and part breds and although each horse had their own individual personality, they all seemed to display these same traits. It didn't take me long at all to start thinking of having my own stallion and little stud one day comprising my bloodlines of top show horses with Morgans. I could breed my idea of the perfect Morgan horse pure and part and share them with the world. Having a good eye for conformation, type and temperament, I purchased a lovely black mare. I keep tabs on my favourite Morgan stallion, he was a big black hansom boy by the name of Mt Tawonga King. I could breed my own version of him, train him, show him and breed with him - that was my plan. One grey mare stuck in my mind, she was a Morgan/Arabian mare, Tekarra. She came to me for saddle training and set the bar so high, she was amazing! I sent her home after her training with tears in my eyes. I had heaps of horses but we just clicked. She was not a show horse, she was a mad keen cool sport horse. I would dream at night of this grey mare. She was always in the back of my mind. Years went by, her owner had sold her on to a breeder but she was too much for their young daughter. I could not afford to buy her but kept in contact with her owner. She was just one of those horses 'I thought' was amazing. Pregnant with my daughter, I came home to a message - Tekarra was up for sale due to the drought, she had a foal at foot and had not been ridden since I had started her. My husband new I loved her so we decided to go for it. Months later I finally get to saddle her up and off we went, she remembered everything. My rodeo friends encouraged me to train her up for barrel racing, so we did. She was amazing. I would write articles into the MHAA and tell them about the first Morgan horse in Australia to compete on the rodeo circuit. She never put a foot wrong, she made it onto the Rodeo in Australia magazine barrel racing. My children would ride her, she was my perPage 13

However my world crashed that following winter as the last time give her a feed, check her rugs and tell her she is beautiful, the next morning she had died - past away in the night with out a mark on her. Months went by, I was empty but having to carry on with breeding commitments, they led to a young stunning black stallion named Watching Royalty. He was available for breeding, his sire was my favourite stallion King. I told his owner what I am wanting to breed, he started to think of his own health and a few months later offered his stallion for sale to me, wanting to give him the life he could not due to his ill health. Perhaps Tekarra knew there was more in store for me? I like to think so. So with that in mind, Roy was on his way to me. Never did I know what this stallion would do for me, he has worked so hard and won so many titles. Watching Royalty and Beccara - I needed to train him up and turn him into the best horse he could be and do our bit to put the Morgan breed in the spotlight for others to see. So for this he needed to be a dressage horse, so back to training classical dressage and the show ring. I discovered the discipline ‘Working Equitation’. I went off to train to be an accredited trainer and coach for WEA. We have now set up a little stud and private WE school at our farm Makara Park, where we offer quality schooling in dressage horsemanship and equitation. We are lucky enough to train with Portuguese trainer Pedro Neves. We are only a small stud, offering Roy at public stud and breeding our own small numbers for sale. Over the last three years, Roy has featured in that many magazines and calendars, is one of the faces of the MHAA flyers. He has won two Australian National Titles for MHAA Purebred In- Hand Purebred Exhibit of the year, Champion Ridden Exhibit and Grand Champion Ridden Exhibit at the National Morgan Show, he has won three years in a row Supreme Purebred In-Hand

Exhibit at the Royal Melbourne Show, he has won Champion ridden and Supreme Led Purebred horse at the Victorian state show plus many many more supreme championships ribbons, rugs, and trophies. He as featured as a promotional horse on the back cover of a national horse magazine for AIS Horse Insurance and he has gained us sponsorships with some of the biggest equine companies in Australia. We have travelled to Sydney and Melbourne Equitana where he has been a display and demonstrations' horse for the MHAA and Working Equitation. He has done all of this while he is a breeding stallion. He is my general riding horse and at all the events we attend, he never puts a foot wrong. He never lets me down. He steps off the float to see where he is, whether it is at the vets for an AI collection, a show or WE and behaves accordingly. He happily gives people a quiet ride - you can see him click down into 'precious cargo' mode, looking over at me for instruction. He is yet another example of the magnificent Morgan horse. I never take him for granted, I am thankful for every day and every wonderful opportunity he has brought my way. He is amazing and gives me 110% and he has restored my faith. Watching Royalty really has no idea how much he has done for me or that he is my living dream.

Foal nutrition is an individual thing By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist Our environment affects us and our horses and over the last 30-45 years we have seen an increase in pollution (at an alarming rate), deforestation, over use of chemicals and land, depletion of the ozone layer, soil deficiency and a rise in salinity levels. Needless to say our horses are trapped in this ever-increasing problem, just as we are. It is important to feed our foals safely and effectively, neither overfeeding nor underfeeding. There are many conditions associated with malnutrition. Often the word malnutrition is used in the wrong way; malnutrition can mean overweight or underweight, which means there is a major shortfall in the supply of nutrients to the body. Limb deformities are quite common in foals, these can be due to the position of the foetus in the uterus, and generally in this case the foal's limbs straighten after a few days and further treatment is not required. Flexural deformity occurs mostly in the forelimbs in one or both legs and most commonly in well-grown yearlings. The fetlock and pastern joints become more upright and the fetlock starts to knuckle over. Angular limb deformity can be caused by a combination of trauma and nutritional imbalances. This means perhaps lunging of foals and yearlings, placing uneven and unnatural pressure on their limbs, long before they are fully matured, this can place pressure on one side of the Physis or growth plate causing one side to grow faster than the other. Through research we have discovered that Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD) which includes OCD (Osteochondrosis), Cervical Vertebral malformation, Angular deformities, Contracted Tendons and Physitis (formally known as Ephyphisitis), can be caused by many factors, such as Genetic predisposition, management practises, disease and dietary influence. It is therefore very wise to seek professional advice before jumping onto any single D.O.D. Bandwagon. OCD (impaired blood supply to cartilage delays conversion of cartilage to bone resulting in abnormal thick cartilage or joint surfaces. The cartilage is therefore only loosely attached to underlying bone and may become detached causing inflammation within joint) and occurs particularly in young rapid growing individuals. Accelerating a horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth by overfeeding may increase the risk of OCD. Generally the stifle and hock joints are effected and clinical signs of the disease usually become obvious in the first two years of

growth. So in the case of OCD correct feeding will probably prevent this disease. Weanlings require almost twice the amount of protein than that of a mature horse. Correct nutrition means supplying your foal with right amount of water, protein, fibre, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins, a shortfall of any of these nutrients could lead to illness. Nutrients provide replacement molecules, provide energy and allow for growth. Our foal's survival depends on the survival of cells. Approximately 70% of the body is water, it is vital, as it is involved in digestion, regulating body temperature, lubrication and metabolism. Water must be readily available. It is important to allow fresh clean water on a daily basis. Sufficient amounts of carbohydrates must be supplied to allow for normal growth rate, athletic ability and resistance to disease. Proteins, (chains of amino acids) are vital for our foal's growth also and the 12 essential amino acids must be supplied by the diet. A deficiency of protein can cause a decrease in food intake, and the condition of the coat may be affected. On the other hand feeding too much protein will mean the excess protein will be utilised

as an energy source far less efficiently than carbohydrates or fat. Minerals and trace elements are also vital for growth and protection, as are vitamins. Feeding your foal is not very complicated, but it is important to remember that every foal and horse is different and they cannot be fed in the same way. Because individuality plays a big role in deciding what you will feed your foal, I do not agree with RDA recommendations, but, like many clinical biochemists and naturopaths I agree with Optimal Daily Allowances. This makes far more sense, when you consider that we as humans do not all require the same nutrient intake, we are all individuals and so are our horses. Supplements such as BreedPlus and GrowthFix are highly recommended for you foals and young growing horses. Also feeds such as the Johnson's Natural Formula Mare and Foal offers a perfectly balanced diet with the inclusion of hays and supplements, easy to feed and very cost effective. Strangles is highly contagious Strangles is one of the oldest known diseases of horses and certainly, along with founder and colic, tended to dominate the earliest text books relating to diseases of the horse. The disease was feared and as the name implies, was responsible for the demise of many horses. Many things have changed since then, but strangles still remains a as scourge of the horse industry. As I said last month, fortunately the incidence of the disease in the general pleasure horse population seems to have markedly diminished over the past 20 years or so but make no mistake, it is certainly still present and is a very serious disease if your horse is unfortunate enough to succumb. Strangles is a very highly contagious infection of all horses but is particularly severe in younger horses that have less innate resistance. The disease is caused by a bacteria, Streptococcus Equii, and primarily affects the upper respiratory tract of the horse. In particular, it has a predilection for the glands and lymph nodes in the throat and sub mandibular region of the head. Initially, in highly susceptible horses, there is a generalised infection

with a high temperature, usually affecting all the mucus membranes of the respiratory system and copious amounts of purulent nasal discharge, before the bacteria localise in the lymph nodes, which are glands that form part of the primary defence system of the horse. Once there, they tend to form abscesses which are walled off pockets of bacteria that attract a massive influx of body white cells resulting in the accumulation of large volumes of puss, which is contained within the walls of the abscess. The abscess rapidly becomes larger and larger, and then, depending on the exact location, can become big enough to obstruct the air intake passages of the horse which can then subsequently “strangle” and die of asphyxia. Fortunately this is not really that common. The majority of the abscess tend to form in the sub mandibular, (under the jaw between the bones of the lower jaw), or on the side of the head under the ears. The particularly nasty ones form in what we call the “retro pharyngeal” space which is right in the centre of the head, above the larynx, and these can be particularly easy to see from the outside, until they become so large that it is obvious that there is a problem.

Abscesses form in the glands and lymph nodes in the throat resulting in strangles. inflammation, lowers the temperature, and generally makes the horse feel better. The argument against penicillin revolves around the theory that it slows the development of the abscess and hence the ability to drain and resolve the problem. Once the disease settles down, I then stop the antibiotic. The abscess will then reform, develop, and be drained, but the germ is contained within the walls of the abscess. Abscess that form in areas that cannot be drained are difficult. In this case, I use a very long course of antibiotics, (6 – 8 weeks). The walls of the abscess contain an excellent blood supply and obviously any puss immediately adjacent to the wall will be exposed to penicillin. Slowly over time, the perimeters of the purulent material are gradually removed of bacteria and the abscess is slowly resolved by the body. The guttural pouches, are very large cavities forming part of the inner ear, on either side of the head, below the ears. Bacteria commonly live in the non draining depths of these pouches and can result in a number of outcomes. Obviously firstly they can fill with puss and become very large, in which case drainage has to be achieved by a difficult surgical approach via “Viborg’s” triangle which is a portal between some very large arteries and vessels at the bottom of the jaw. Sometimes the puss is not so obvious and it can sit there un-noticed. The fluid can be slowly resorbed from the purulent material leaving cores of solid material that forms what are known as “Kunkers”. Probably more commonly, the bottom of these pouches can retain small amounts of fluid that serve as an excellent medium for the bacteria to survive, and this can result in that particular horse harbouring the germs and becoming a “Non Clinical Carrier” capable of transmitting the disease to new populations of susceptible horses Hopefully what I have said is enough to alert owners to the reality and severity of the disease. Repetitive vaccination is essential.

Because of the position, as the abscess enlarges, it easily obstructs the pharynx and displaces the larynx cutting off the airway. They are relatively easy to diagnose by endoscopy. What I have described to this point constitutes the most severe form of the disease. Another particularly nasty form of the disease is the so called “Bastard Strangles”. In this case, the bacteria, particularly in the initial acute phase, enter the blood stream of the horse and are carried right around the whole horse. In this case, they can then localise out into other lymph nodes, anywhere in the body. (Hence the nick name implying they have not been playing “fair”). These can be particularly severe and devastating, particularly if they form in the lungs or abdominal cavity of the horse where the abscess, although often being quite large, can be very difficult to detect. Fortunately most cases of strangles can be successfully treated if diagnosed correctly and treated aggressively. There is some controversy as to whether antibiotics should be used or not when treating strangles, but, in my opinion, penicillin is a “game breaker” and used correctly, will save most horses. What everyone has to understand is that antibiotics will only work if they are able to establish direct contact with the bacteria. The strangles organism fortunately is very susceptible to penicillin and will die quickly if exposed. As discussed above, strangles tends to result in the formation of abscesses in the tissues. This means that the central core of the abscess is filled with puss and there is no blood supply to this area. Certainly, I have absolutely no argument that the treatment of choice of all abscesses is to surgically open and drain them, after which the lesion quickly heals, and this is what I do. However, I believe that in the early acute stages of the disease, when any abscesses may still be very small, or more importantly, the bacteria is still in the blood stream or attacking the mucus membranes, the antibiotic easily contacts the organism and kills it. I believe this achieves two goals. Firstly it stops the generalised circulation of the organism and thus the formation of remote abscesses, but also, it tends to slow the development of acute abscesses and so make them far less likely to rapidly increase in size and cause respiratory obstruction. Coupled with penicillin, I also use phenylbutazone which reduces the

Answering the Challenge at Cloncurry The 2015 Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge, held on from July 8 12 and celebrated a great weekend of Australian horsemanship. Campdrafting and horsemanship skills were put to the test with more than $60,000 in prizes and prize money on offer. The winner of the prestigious Curley Cattle Transport Classic Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge was Joshua Smith from Rockhampton riding Mr Freckles Chic owned by Kim Huxley. The judges for the Dry Work Phase and the Cattle Work Phase said the standard of competition was exceptional. “The campdraft was highly competitive with some excellent horse and riders on show during the five days of non-stop action,” said Phil Webb, judge of the Dry Work Phase. “The level of competition has changed so much in the past 30 years. The young competitors today are extremely well prepared and everyone wants to compete at Cloncurry. It is a credit to the committee and the event itself.” Joshua Smith also continued to dominate the weekend by winning the Ernst Henry Mining Open Challenge on Playin it Lucky. In the Open Rookie Challenge, Jaye Hall on Eltorrio took out first place, while the Kevin Purcell and Little Biddy Acre won the AJ McDonald Memorial Limited Rookie Challenge. The Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft also hosted the final of the 2015 Stockman’s Challenge Classic Premiership, which was held over the five major challenges in the state, including; Star of the Highlands, Rocky Rush, Horse of the North, Monto Silver Buckle and the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge. This series is for horses aged under 5 years. The winner of the 2015 Stockman’s Challenge Classic Premiership was Joshua Smith on Reys Dual Oak. He said it was a thrill to win both the Curley Cattle Transport Classic Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and the 2015 Stockman’s Challenge Classic Premiership. “To win Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge is definitely the highlight of my career so far,” Joshua said. “I have been competing at Cloncurry for 15 years, and it is something that I have always wanted to win. It was a bonus to win the premiership on my colt Reys Dual Oak.” “It was a great feeling also to bring back the same horse that I rode at Cloncurry in 2003, and win the Open Challenge as well. For us, it is a real family sport.” President of the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft, James Coates, said the 2015 Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge drew some of the best riders and horses in the country to Cloncurry. “This year was one of the biggest Challenges we have hosted,” he said. Developing the ‘dreaded canter’ By TANJA KRAUS When I asked recently what topic people would like to read about, I had a few respond with 'The Dreaded Canter' - how to develop it, the transition and the rider getting the confidence to canter. There are a number of things to consider when we look at the canter and the confidence in the canter. First, we need to consider that the canter can be scary for our horse too. We think about it being scary for us - what if he takes off ? What if he bucks ? etc etc. But we don't consider that cantering under saddle for our horses can be scary for them too, especially if we don't do it very often. So, how do we get both him, and us, confident in the canter ? I’m going to break this into different categories. First, I want to make a note here this article is written from the perspective of a young horse (green broken) or an older horse who may be trained but may not have cantered for a while. I would build the confidence to the canter the same way for both. Category 1 - The rider. Getting yourself confident and prepared for the canter can take a few things. Firstly we need to figure out if it is the canter itself we are worried about, or the canter on our horse. If we are worried about the canter itself, then we can look into that further (have we had a bad experience, etc) and we can start to work on our mental approach. Then we can work on the physical approach - find a well-trained and confident horse, that has a smooth, confident canter and good brakes and practice your canter on it first. This way you can focus on getting you confident in the canter itself without having to worry about the horse. Perhaps you can ride a friend’s horse or a riding school horse but this one has to be 100% solid in the canter, easy to drive and have good brakes. Not just a mate’s horse that says 'oh yeah he is great in the canter', and then he takes off because you are a little off balance or gripping a little with your legs. If we are worried about the canter on our horse, the solution is the same practice your canter on a quiet and confident horse first, and then build the canter on your horse. If you are still not 100% confident in riding the canter on a

I personally prefer to build the canter on a young horse out on the trail up a hill or up a slight incline in the paddock. The horse naturally wants to use his hindquarter to get up the hill, so the canter seems logical to him at this point. If you are not confident to canter out in a paddock or on the trail the first time you can build the canter in a roundyard. Ensure that the footing is not slippery and that the roundyard is big enough for him to canter in

Get the area right - if you have decided to canter in a roundyard, arena or out on the trail, make sure you are there. Don't change your mind last minute and do it in an open paddock. Finally get yourself and your horse right with the equipment you are going to use. If falling is what you fear then gear yourself up with a helmet, and a vest - whatever it takes to make you feel safe. Get the right saddle - a stock saddle, fender or western saddle may make you feel safer as they 'hold you in' a little better. Fit your saddle out with breakaway or safety stirrups, so if your foot gets stuck it will come out.

What’s Happening NOOSA COUNTRY SHOW The annual Noosa Show will be held at Pomona Showgrounds on September 11 and 12. Ring events will include a separate Hunter ring with lightweight, heavyweight and Working Hunter classes. Harness, breeds, Western, district and open hacks, pony club hacks, new novelties, miniatures and show jumping. Once again there will be the popular show riding mount ring on Friday 11 for all breeds of horses that aren't of Hack type - they may be of any breed. Ponies, Galloways and Hacks will be judged on performance and rideability. This year they offer a special competitor rate two day gate pass. OXENFORD GALA HACK DAY Riders of all ages are preparing their horses and ponies for one of the Gold Coast’s main equestrian events on this year's calendar. The Oxenford Pony Club will host a Gala Hack day on August 30 and the program has Gold Coast equine enthusiasts excited. "Our Gala Hack day has been organised to ensure that successful competitors will qualify to compete at a Royal Show and for this reason alone we expect that the competition will be high," said Oxenford Pony Club chief instructor, Lyn Lynch. "Many pony hack and galloway riders will be keen to compete for a win in an open at our event because if they are successful this will add to the number of open wins they need to compete at any Royal Show," said Mrs. Lynch "I know that riders work very hard throughout the year to prepare their horses and ponies for hack shows and I can guarantee that this event won't disappoint riders," Mrs. Lynch said "I am very proud that we have been able to attract well respected and qualified judges. In doing so we have lifted the level of this event to a day that will make competitors and their supporters proud," she said. "However the program offers a class for almost everyone - from the dedicated Hack rider to the beginner child rider, and if you love to see beautifully turned out horses and ponies spectators are most welcome." Local rider Georgia Robertson says she is looking forward to competing at the event with her horse, Quest. "I am very excited as the program has so much to offer and compete in," she said "I enjoy getting up early on the day and doing my best against other great riders" The Gala Hack Day is on August 30 at the Oxenford Pony Club. What’s Happening “Premier Show” NORTHERN RIVERS ARABIAN SHOW The Northern Rivers Arabian Horse Association Inc will hold the A Class Arabian "Premier Show" at Murwillumbah Showgrounds on September 6. There are many prizes, trophies and sashes to be won and as well this year there is added prizemoney. The very popular Premier Cup events will again be held in both the purebred and derivative rings, where the horses are judged as led as well as under saddle. There is a jam-packed program for Purebreds and Derivatives offering over 30 champions, four supremes and the Premier Cup at the prettiest showground in NSW. The Association has introduced a Grand Champion ridden horse to the show this year where the Supreme Ridden Derivative will verse the Supreme Ridden Purebred and the winner will take home $100 This year there is also an adult program similar to the youth program along with Hi point youth and Hi Point adult. Deni Ute Muster lends a sporting hand Every sporting club in Australia has a chance to give its fundraising a boost, thanks to the Deni Ute Muster. In a special promotion announced recently, $25 from the sale of each adult 2015 Deni Ute Muster ticket will be donated to the sporting club of the purchaser’s choice. But it’s limited to 1000 tickets, so Muster goers need to get in quick. Deni Ute Muster General Manager Kate Pitt said every sporting club in Australia is being given an opportunity to participate and raise money for their organisation. Warialda hosts NSW showjumping championship The Pony Club NSW State Showjumping Championship was held recently at the Warialda Showgrounds, Warialda on July 4-5. Around 120 competitors travelled from Pony Clubs across NSW and also interstate from Queensland to compete in the annual event. Competitors arrived at Warialda with the fitness check held on Friday afternoon. Riders were judged on their presentation during the fitness check with Zone 8 awarded the title for the best presented zone. At the end of competition, it was Zone 24 who was awarded the overall Zone Team Champions, while Queensland claimed the Champion State. Zone 24's Chief Instructor and Assistant Technical Delegate for the Championship Peter Petherbridge, had 15 riders from the zone competing. Mr Petherbridge was thrilled with his riders taking home the Champion Zone Award. "I am really proud of the riders from our Zone. We have eight strong clubs in Zone 24 and we are working hard to develop our rider skills and horsemanship knowledge," he said. This marks the second event this year that Zone 24 have been awarded the Champion Zone, claiming the title at the Pony Club NSW State Dressage Championships earlier in the year also. With just three State

Championships remaining for the year, Zone 24 will be aiming for the hat trick. "We will have a few riders at State Eventing, but expect a larger team to enter for State Showriding. The State Showjumping Championship was hosted by Pony Clubs located in Zone 8 which includes; Bingara, Collarenebri, Coolatai, Garah Boomi, Gravesend, Gurley, Lightning Ridge, Moree, Mungindi, North Star, Tulloona, Upper Horton and Warialda. Julie Morgan was very pleased with the overall event. "The grounds, equipment, volunteers and the venue were all highly praised by all in attendance,” she said. “It was a very friendly, calm atmosphere and I am extremely proud of Zone 8 and all of its volunteers. We hosted this event as a united zone and all clubs in the zone did their bit towards running a successful event.” Congratulations to the following age champions: In the Under 13 age group, Naomi Crossley riding Toots from Orange Pony Cub in Zone 3 was the Age Champion, with William Wood from Armidale awarded Reserve Champion.

Cameron Moffatt from Qld rode Dolly Varden to win the 13 and under 15 years Age Champion, with fellow Qld team member Christopher Holland claiming the Reserve Champion. Angus Graham also from Qld rode Kings Rhapsody to claim the 15 and under 17 years title, while Kate Johnson from Mangrove Mountain in Zone 24 was awarded the Reserve Champion. In the Associate 17 and under 25 years age group, Hayley Seaton from Toronto Pony Club in Zone 24 rode Perfect Match to claim the highest points for Age Champion and Freya Rushton from Wongarbon Pony Club in Zone 4 was close behind for the Reserve Champion title. "Warialda Pony Club and Zone 8 certainly put on a great show,” Mr Petherbridge said. “The courses were designed to John Vallance's normal high standard and while the fences were more technical than large, there were few eliminations, but double clear rounds were hard to find. I hope John can continue designing our courses well into the future." The next Pony Club NSW State event is the Pony Club NSW State Mounted Games Championship which is to be held at Bungendore from October 10-11.
