Endurance champion beats conditions to take title It was one of Imbil's coldest nights as over 150 riders competed in the Queensland Endurance Riders Association State Championships in July at the Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex in Imbil in the Mary Valley. Those participating in the 160km event set off in icy conditions at midnight on the Friday night and it took Matthew Gadsby 11 hours and 48 minutes on horseback to cross the finish line and be named the 2018 QERA State Champion for the second year in a row. Gadsby, from Tweed Heads, and his horse Maximus Ra averaged about 13.5 kilometres per hour and in addition to the state title, also took out Best Conditioned Heavyweight accolades, while second place went to Rod Field from Kenilworth and Paul Roosen from Cedar Creek. In the middleweight category Kenilworth local Brook Sample riding Brookleigh Dylan completed the ride in 12 hours 36 minutes ahead of Keiran Sirett from Stockleigh and Leah Robertson from Nobby who

crossed the line in third. In the lightweight, Annette Chamberlain took line honours and was followed by Shelley Chapman from Kilkivan and Essy Mountford from Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast. Matthew Sample, owner Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex which hosted the event, said despite the cold, the weekend was a great success

and congratulated all of those who completed the rides. "This event presented an excellent opportunity for riders to experience the forestry tracks around Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex which will host the 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup, Australia's most prestigious endurance ride," Mr Sample said. "We were delighted that

amongst those competing were several 11-year-olds who qualified to ride in next year's Tom Quilty by completing their first 160km ride. “Setting out at midnight with around 20 hours ahead of you is no small feat when you're an adult, never mind when you are 11 and it's freezing outside!" Two of the 11-year-olds Noah Hoogland from Upper Brookfield in Brisbane and Zac Sample from Kenilworth crossed the line together after 12 hours 37 minutes to take out the junior title, followed by Louis Ryan from Pullenvale. "It's great to see Brook and his son Zac both achieve first place in their respective divisions this weekend, it's a fantastic achievement for these two riders and I couldn't be prouder," Mr Sample said of his brother and nephew. Jan Rohweder from Riverview took out first place in the 80km race which also took place on the weekend and with Wade Burgess from Tara coming second and Stephanie Malmborg from Silverdale coming third. New training sensor provides ‘onboard’ data Family-owned Victorian equine business Show Horse Supplies has secured an exclusive deal with international equine technology company Equestic to bring their products to the Australian market. "Show Horse Supplies are proud to announce that we are bringing yet another first to the Australian and New Zealand equine markets though an exclusive deal with Equestic to bring you the award winning SaddleClip,” Show Horse Supplies owner Karl McKinlay said. “Adding this to our great range of products, our motto is to bring you products from around the world to both improve and inhance you horses and their wellbeing. “The Equestic SaddleClip definitely falls into this category." ‘Healthier horses through better riding’ is the approach behind this device which is one of the world’s most user-friendly training sensor which is finding its way into equestrian sports. For a long time now, the jogger or cyclist's training app has been a valuable aid in checking the daily training schedule down to the last detail. With the Equestic SaddleClip, there is finally a training app on the market that allows all dressage, jumping and eventing riders, professionals or amateurs a simple and uncomplicated check of their training sessions. Simply attach the SaddleClip to the left-hand saddle blade, connect via Bluetooth to the mobile app, select the horse to ride on and off

you go. The Equestic SaddleClip records not only the time, gaits and directions during the ride, but also the number of transitions from gait to gait, as well as the clock purity of the gears, the force of the impression and the symmetry within each gait. During the jumping training it is also recorded how many jumps were made, how many were made out of the left or right turn. The perfect control for a balanced training, which are represented by simple graphics on the phone. The analysis of the individual rides not only informs the rider about the balance of his

training, but also the trainer, vet or farrier, because all rides can be shared with the one who has the free app installed on his mobile phone. Many celebrity riders already use the Equestic SaddleClip as a daily training orientation. The entire Dutch national team already train with the clip. And also German Olympic champion Sandra Auffarth do not want to miss out on this informative app. “I find it particularly exciting that this small sensor immediately records every irregularity,” she said. “The SaddleClip has no mercy and shows me relentlessly how I trained.” The health of horses is very important to Leon Rutten, the versatile inventor of the Equestic SaddleClip. "Riding with the Equestic SaddleClip will, in any case, sensitize the senses for one's own training," Leon said. “And better riding means a healthier horse." A concern that should be a matter of the heart for every horse owner and rider. "Show Horse Supplies are our dealers on the Australian and New Zealand market and we are very excited to be working with Karl and the Show Horse Supplies team to launch the Equestic SaddleClip in Australia and New Zealand," Equestic’s Arjen Wierikx said. The purchase price of this useful training sensor is $430 and is now available at Show Horse Supplies. Visit the website at www.showhorsesupplies.com.au

Turn the manure heap into pasture resource Where there is a horse - there is manure and what to do with it has been a problem since man first yarded the horse. Manure management is also an integral part of a healthy farm but getting it out of the stable and then what to do with it is the problem. Traditionally, the solution is to dump it into the "manure heap" and pretend it's not there or bag it up and try and sell it ‌‌ at a loss! It is well proven that nutrients contained in manure will improve pasture productivity. The effects of manure returning to the pasture will increase growth, cover and quality of forage. Most horse farms whether it be one or two horses or large-scale stud farm with 400 horses have a manure problem that in fact is a resource in disguise. ABI Attachments has made manure management (pasture improvement) accessible and simple to all horse owners with the ABI Classic Spreader. These compact manure spreaders can be loaded straight out of the stable while mucking or direct from the

existing manure heap. The spreaders will pulverize and break up the manure thrashing it out over the pasture. This will expose the broken-up manure pieces to the UV light and kill off any parasite concerns allowing the manure to

quickly break down and return to the soil. This is what farm manager Tony Hall of the well know Wild Oaks spelling and agistment farm had to say about the ABI Spreaders "We originally purchased two ABI Manure Spreaders. After

some weeks it was evident that the spreader was everything it was said to be. Cleaner, faster and the quality of material and build above expectation. So, we bought two more and placed them all around the farm. Hugely successful in time management, stable and pasture management - highly recommend to any farm, big or small. Far better manure management system than the trailer and manure heap." Designed with very simple operation with two levers to operate - one for engagement and one flow rate. The spreaders sizes start small for mower/quad/ATV pull and work up to 40hp tractor pull. For more details you can visit www.abiattachments.com.au or Ph: 1800 609 669

Methods used to detect if your mare in foal With some mares there is little doubt that they are in foal. But some mares seem to be able to fool their owners into thinking they are indeed in foal when they are not. So what options do owners have? There are several methods available, suitable for different stages of pregnancy. Transrectal palpation: A veterinarian puts a hand in the rectum and feels the uterus for signs of pregnancy. These include uterine tone, the shape of the uterus, and the presence and size of the small sac containing the foetus, called the amnionic vesicle. Ultrasound: A vet places a probe in the rectum of the mare and sound waves are used to generate a picture of the uterus, the foetus and placenta. It can also detect the foetal heartbeat. Ultrasound can be used to detect pregnancy from about day 16, and can even reveal gender from about 55 to 70 days. While transrectal palpation and ultrasound are accurate ways of determining pregnancy, there are many times when the mare is too irritable to be examined, or its rectum is simply too small for a manual examination. Blood testing: Blood samples can be taken from the mare by a veterinarian and sent to a laboratory to be tested for the presence of chemical hormones associated with pregnancy.

Pregnancy can be detected from as early as 16 days post mating

Urine Testing: Urine-based pregnancy testing is also used to detect pregnancy. The Wee-Foal-Checker mare pregnancy test will tell you if your mare is pregnant from 110 days to 300 days post breeding. The pregnancy test works by reading pregnancy hormone levels in your mares urine. The Wee-Foal-Checker analyses a few drops of your mare's urine for the presence of hormones associated with mare pregnancy. The hormones are excreted into urine where it can be detected by the test. This provides the breeder with a non-invasive means of diagnosing pregnancy status

and monitoring foetal viability. Wee-Foal-Checker mare pregnancy test involves just two simple steps. Firstly, dilute a few drops of your mare's urine with the diluting solution provided with the test. Secondly, add a few drops of the diluted urine to the test membrane enclosed in a plastic cassette. Wait five to 10 minutes. If a single red line forms on the test membrane, this indicates that your mare is pregnant. If two red lines form, this indicates that your mare is not pregnant. This Wee-Foal-Checker mare pregnancy test does not suffer the problem of 'false positive' diagnoses, often seen with other biochemical pregnancy tests, where mares that have lost their foal are still diagnosed as pregnant. In the event of foetal loss, production of the estrogenic steroid decreases rapidly to non-pregnant levels, thereby resulting in a 'not pregnant' diagnosis with Wee-FoalChecker. These tests have a 98% accuracy. Now it is easy to monitor the pregnancy status of your mare from 110 days after breeding right through to just before the expected time of foaling. It is prudent that your mare be re-tested five to seven months after first being diagnosed pregnant so that pregnancy status can be verified, and your mare managed accordingly. To order Wee-Foal-Checker you can send an email to or call on (03)5342 2206.

Understanding the process of foaling By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

Allowing a mare to go through the process of foaling naturally is recommended - with unnecessary human intervention.

small window of time to successfully intervene and prevent a tragedy. It is essential to know what is normal and be able to recognise that intervention is necessary. The foaling period is conveniently divided into three phases: Prenatal, Parturition, and Postnatal The Prenatal period includes the six weeks prior to the actual foal-

ing date. The first problem people have is actually when is the mare actually due to foal? The normal gestation period of a mare is a very wide time frame of between 320 and 360 days. Most foalings dates between these intervals are normal and the quoted time of 336 - 340 days is only an average. The normal foal is born when it's uterine development and maturity is determined by internal signals to be optimum for survival. Actually predicting when the mare is going to foal can be very difficult and the owner can only use best practice to guide them. Most mares will commence udder development approximately one month prior to foaling with progressive development and swelling to a large firm udder with "wax" appearing on the ends of the teats 24 - 48 hours prior to birth. The mare’s belly will loosen and "drop" in the week or two prior to foaling and as the actual time approaches, the perineal tissues will also soften and relax and the vulva dilates and becomes flaccid. Most mares will foal in the very early hours of the morning, often just prior to dawn. Some mares, particularly maidens, can be very shy and be upset by owners maintaining a close vigil, and actually delay the event. Give the mare some space and only observe from an unobtrusive distance. The mare should be familiarised and housed in the area that the owner intends her to foal for at least the month prior to birth. This can be a clean open paddock or in a foaling stall, depending on the individual circumstances. Most facilities can be suitable, the

Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse

Without question, the sight of a newly born foal frolicking in the paddock beside it's mother in the first days of life is immensely uplifting and one of the real natural pleasures of nature. Fortunately most mares foal without problems and the experience of breeding your own foal is both rewarding and trouble free. As the pleasure horse industry rapidly expands, more and more people are undertaking the experience of breeding their own foal. To the new and inexperienced owner, the pathway to achieving this goal appears daunting and somewhat intimidating, primarily because of a relative lack of knowledge and understanding of what is normal. The cliche, "Observant Neglect" is the best premise to guide the rookie through the process. The mare manager must know what is normal, observe the birthing process from a very discreet distance, and only intervene if something is going wrong. Much more harm is done by inexperienced lay people attempting to "help" what is mostly a perfectly normal event. However, if something is going wrong, then there is only a very

important point is that the mare should be comfortable and familiar with her surroundings. Certainly, the owner should attempt to provide an area that is easily accessible and provides opportunity for easily locating and checking on the mare during the night close to the foaling time. It is advisable to immunise the mare with a tetanus booster approximately six weeks prior to foaling and I like to last worm the mare no closer than two months using a simple ivermectin based medication. All medicines are drugs and some mares may react to the medication and if the pregnancy is a little unstable, foaling can be prematurely induced and a disaster eventuate. Nevertheless, it is important to ensure the mare is worm free as the new born foal is very susceptible to worm damage and will quickly become infected if the mare is passing eggs. Hendra vaccination is now an issue as the mare requires an annual vaccination to maintain immunity as per the registration. Owners should consider this strategically as, although the vaccine is very safe, some horses can get a mild reaction, as can happen with any medication, and I would prefer not to vaccinate in the last three months. The owner should check to ensure that the mare was not "caslicked" at the breeding farm which is a surgical closing of the lips of the vulva to enhance fertility. If this has been done, the closed vulva should be opened by the veterinarian approximately 4 - 6 weeks prior to the expected foaling date. continued page 15

Observation not interference is best during foaling  From page 14 This is to cover mares that will naturally foal "early", and not allow the tissues to reheal or infection to develop, in those mares that may naturally foal late. If the caslick is not opened and foaling occurs, mares can suffer severe lacerations and the foal may actually asphyxiate. The most common problem that occurs during this prenatal period is excessive udder development with swelling and oedema along the belly as a result of inflammation in the udder. Some mares can become very stiff and uncomfortable and may need medication. A much more serious problem is actual streaming of milk prior to foaling. If this occurs, and particularly at a relatively early time frame in the gestation, it could mean serious problems are occurring with the placenta and veterinary advice must be obtained. Streaming of the milk also results in loss of colostrum and valuable antibodies necessary for the foals immunity. Other problems that can occur relatively commonly are various symptoms of colic and abdominal discomfort, both from the size of the foal and faecal impaction, and more seriously, laminitis. The veterinarian must be contacted immediately. The actual period of parturition also involves three stages. The first stage is the longest and may take up to 12 - 18 hours, usually longer in the maiden mare. During this time, the mare is restless and often uncomfortable and it is the period when the foal is actually being presented and engaged in the pelvis and the placenta is commencing to open and dilate the cervix so that the foal can passage the birth canal. Most mares will still be eating and functioning normally. The owner will notice a distinct change in behaviour and this is usually the best guide to the diligent owner that the time is coming. She should not be spending a lot of time on the ground, sweating excessively, or straining. Again, I must stress that this is what happens with most mares and is not always the case. Some mares, particularly those who have had several foals can exhibit almost no signs during stage one. Stage two, the actual delivery of the foal, is usually very quick and more often than not, the owner will miss it. During this time, the mare will commence extremely vigorous and even violent contractions as uterus expels the foal.

A foal being able to suckle shortly after birth is crucial to its health and wellbeing.

Certainly it is not uncommon to be complete in 20 - 30 minutes. If the contractions and extreme discomfort continue longer than 90 - 120 minutes, there is probably some problem. My rule of thumb is that the owner should be able to notice some progress on a continual scale and if this is happening, leave the mare alone. Normally one foot appears, then the other somewhat behind. Next the nose and slowly the head emerges. Progress to the shoulder stage can take a while, and then all of a sudden, the shoulders pass and the foal is quickly expelled. Do not interfere if this can be seen. Also, the foal normally rotates slightly as it passes the birth canal. Many owners think the foal is coming "crooked" and attempt to straighten the foal. This is normal. What is abnormal is to have only one leg, one leg and the nose, the nose and no leg, or a tail. Any of these situations are a dire emergency and help is urgently required. The third stage of foaling is the expulsion of the afterbirth. This often occurs with the foal, but usually will happen 1 - 4 hours after foaling. The mare can once again experience severe contractions and be down and straining, often stimulated by hormone release as the foal suckles the udder. If the afterbirth has not been expelled by 8 - 12 hours, help should be obtained. Now comes one of the most critical periods in the foal’s life, postnatal, and this is where most problems will occur if things aren't right. It is absolutely essential for the normal foal to quickly progress to the stage of being able to stand and actually suckle the mare’s udder. This is necessary for two primary reasons. Firstly, the foal is born without any natural immunity and must obtain the first milk or colostrum from the mare. This milk is rich in protective antibodies and the foals intestines have a unique

characteristic of the cells being open in a "meshlike" pattern allowing the large antibody molecules to be absorbed intact without being digested, and taken into the foal's bloodstream. Once the sucking stimulus has been recognised by the foal's body, these open cells close and the antibodies can no longer be absorbed. Of even more importance, is the fact that these open cells also allow bacteria to pass and enter the foal's system and the longer the cells remain open, the more bacteria to invade the body and cause disease. It is essential therefore that the foal achieves these milestones quickly and if this occurs, then the likelihood is that the whole

process will be a happy and memorable occasion for all concerned. If this has not occurred, certainly by two hours, then veterinary help should be urgently obtained. This period is one where proper help can make a real difference. The veterinarian will assess the situation and often some simple nursing care, supportive drug therapy milk administration and possibly fluids, will "kickstart" the foal and all will be well. More serious are neonatal problems such as prematurity, dummy foals, septic foals, and foals with contractures. This is where the owner has to make some serious decisions. Certainly referral to one of the intensive care foal units that are available can often turn the process around. But the owner must be fully aware that the prognosis is very often guarded, the process can be extremely expensive, and many heartaches can occur. Probably the single most important event to occur after the foal is drinking is for it to pass it's first manure or meconium. If this does not occur, or the foal starts straining a lot, or even develops colic, then help again must be sought urgently.

Abortions are not infrequent in horses Abortions are not infrequent in horses and while not all abortions are caused by infectious agents, differentiating infectious from noninfectious causes by observation only is generally difficult. Biological material from mares who have aborted is often collected for veterinary examination and testing. It is very important to have good biosecurity to prevent the spread of infectious agents to either people or animals when handling this material. Equine Herpes Virus infection (EHV-1) is the most common cause of infectious abortion in horses throughout the world and has been reported across Australia. While it does not affect people, it is highly contagious and can easily be transmitted to other horses on the hands or clothing of people in contact with the horses or material from the horse such as uterine fluids, placentas or foetuses. There are other less common infectious agents that can also cause abortion in horses and these can also be transmitted to other horses by people or equipment. Chlamydia psittaci, a bacterium most commonly associated with birds, has recently been detected in aborted material from mares at sites around NSW. This organism can cause serious illness in people. In southern NSW, five people who had con-

Biosecurity when handling aborted materials mares

tact with an infected horse placenta developed serious respiratory illness, possibly psittacosis, with some requiring hospitalisation. Leptospirosis is also a rare cause of abortion in mares and may cause a serious influenzalike illness in people. It is important to have good hygiene control when handling biological material from aborted mares. This will reduce the risk of human exposure to infectious agents that also affect people and will make the transfer of infection on clothes, hands or objects such as floats, leads and halters to other horses less likely. To enable veterinary examination of biological material from aborted mares, the material will need to be placed in a leak-proof bag and then submitted to a veterinarian for examination and testing.

* Wash hands with soap and running water for 10 seconds before and after contact. * Always use disposable gloves when han dling biological material. * Cover cuts and abrasions before gloving. * Wear a properly fitted ‘P2’ respirator mask Psittacosis is transmitted by the respiratory route and aerosol droplets are created when tissues are handled and lifted. * Use disposable overalls or a disposable apron and change clothing after handling the tissues. * Double bag all contaminated materials. After bagging is completed and protective equipment removed the face and arms should be washed thoroughly before handling other animals. * Dispose protective equipment safely (i.e. in a sealed bag in normal waste) * Footwear should be disinfected all over including the soles. Taking these precautions may make tasks take a little longer but they will dramatically reduce the risk of spread of infection to people and animals.

Caterpillars and abortions in equines Studies at the University of Queensland and field research at the Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre have demonstrated that exposure to hairy Processionary Caterpillars or their nest material can cause abortion and placentitis in pregnant mares. Exposure to the caterpillars results in damage to the tissues of the amnion and umbilical cord of the developing foetus. This tissue damage results in poor development of the foetus and can lead to abortion from mid to late-term pregnancy or the birth of premature and weak, underdeveloped foals. This condition is known as Equine Amnionitis and Foetal Loss Syndrome (EAFL). The species of moths which produce these caterpillars emerge from the ground in late spring (October –November). The moths are short-lived; they mate, lay eggs in nests associated with native trees and die. There are at least three nest types depending on the various type of moth. - Bag-type nests that are dewdrop shaped and appear high in eucalypt trees; - Tree-hugger nests which have a Page 16

Ochrogaster lunifer (processionary caterpillar) can cause allergic reactions in humans and can cause abortion in pregnant mares

similar appearance to the bag nests but are attached to a tree branch or trunk; - Ground-based nests which are attached to the base of the tree trunk and are mainly reported in wattles (acacia species). The caterpillars hatch from the eggs in the nest, feed on the leaves of the tree at night and return to the nest during the day. The nest will grow larger to accommodate their larger size and the nest will also contain accumulated frass (shed exoskeleton and waste). If the caterpillars eat all the foliage on a host tree they will move in

classic head-to-tail processions to another host tree. By about May-June the caterpillars are mature and ready to pupate. They leave the trees and move into adjacent pasture for pupation, lying dormant until they hatch as moths in Oct-Nov. Mares are likely to be exposed to caterpillars while grazing around trees where nests are present, encountering head-totail processions when caterpillars are moving from one tree to another, when mature caterpillars are leaving trees to pupate, and by disturbing old nest material after caterpillars have pupat-

ed. It is currently believed that mares are most likely to be at risk of exposure from about March to June, and beyond that due to exposure to old nest material. Current field studies have shown that there are a significant number of caterpillar nests now appearing on trees. Now is the time to identify the nests and areas of the farm affected. It is likely that removing pregnant mares from paddocks which contain caterpillar nests will be effective in preventing EAFL. Due to the widespread distribution of the nests, it is often impractical to remove mares from affected paddocks. In this case, removal of the nests may be a more practical option. It is important to note that all caterpillar nest material is capable of causing severe itching or allergic reactions in people on contact with skin and may cause severe irritation if material gets into eyes, nose or mouth. Nest material is also very light and can easily be dispersed on the wind. Farms should develop protocols for safe handling of nest material & management of inadvertent human exposure.

Managing feeding in the drought By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist Š2018

www.hiform.com.au

Horses are perpetual grazing animals they move from one area to another selecting certain grasses, clover and herbs. Horses can travel many kilometres in a day and never return to the same area. We are aware that horses do not generally like to graze in areas that have been affected by manure. This also allows them to reduce the risk of contaminated pasture and lowers the parasite risk. There is a reason why and we highly recommend that horses can graze 24/ 7 but over population over many years has reduced the ability for the horse to graze and be in a natural environment. There has been a significant impact from horse owners who stable their horses at night. In many cases the horses are not provided sufficient hay during this extended period when they do not have access to grazing, this can cause digestive health issues. These types of problems have increased more as there has been a demand for a higher usage of land. The amount of access to pasture has a significant effect on the performance of horses overall, the intake of forage which includes selection and the amount of time spent on pasture, including the patterns of defecation makes their grazing behaviour unique. Whilst this is a natural environment for the horse, this behaviour also has increased management issues. Horse sick pasture When a horse selects a certain pasture, he determines the quality by smell, touch and taste, the aroma being the most important aspect. In paddocks where there is limited pasture, overgrazing occurs. This is very common in drought-stricken areas. Overgrazing causes horses to avoid pasture that has been soiled. This is called 'horse sick' pasture. Certain horses have preferences for a certain type of pasture as they have quite perceptive tastes and can distinguish the difference between a sweet pasture versus a bitter pasture. This ability to determine the type of pasture also allows horses to avoid poisonous plants. Touch is also very important when it comes to selecting certain pastures, hairs on the lips of the horse which are like 'touch receptors' allow

Page 18

Managing pastures in drought conditions can be quite challenging and therefore it is important to supply additional roughage and supplementary feeds. the horse to gauge which pasture to graze on and notify the horse how far the nose is from the ground or objects. This ability also reduces the risk of the horse consuming harmful pasture or plants. Horses will spend approximately 18 hours a day grazing if they have access to pasture. The exact amount of time will also depend on the quality of the pasture and if there are supplementary feeds such as a hard feed being fed morning and night or extra hays. Horses have evolved to be highly discerning in what they consume. Faeces are the main cause of horse sick pastures and we know that the sex of horse will determine the different pattern in the way that they defecate. Stallions for example will tend to manure in the same location leaving several piles of manure.

Mares however, tend to smell the manure without turning around and therefore the manure patches become increasingly larger. Geldings on the other hand don't care where they manure. On average an adult horse will generate approximately seven kg in dry weight of manure daily, but the level of manure produced is also governed by the amount of feed and in particular roughage that the horse consumes. Overgrazing and exercise such as galloping around the paddock can damage the soil, this is caused by the horse's hooves which causes compaction and makes it quite favourable for weeds to grow, this is very frustrating for horse owners trying to manage paddocks on a consistent basis. In some cases, horse sick paddocks can have up to 50% of the area excluded and in turn there is a reduction in the usage of land. Managing pastures in drought is essential to maintain the quality of the pasture that is available. Collecting manure every 24 hours or harrowing pasture and spreading evenly across the land is a fantastic way to manage these horse sick pastures that have been subjected to drought. This can be quite challenging if the area that you are trying to harrow or collect is not flat. Land that is hilly or sloped can be very challenging to maintain. Rotating from one paddock to another is also a way to manage these types of pastures, but horse owners need to have the land area to do so. It can be quite beneficial to cross graze with sheep or cattle when you have horses. Another way to maintain pasture is to ensure that there is a weed control program. Â continued page 19

The Horse Report

Roughage is the key when feeding horses  from page 18 The most important aspect of managing horses in drought-stricken areas to provide them with plenty of roughage, due to the fact that they do not have normal access to pasture. This can be provided in the form of hays, including legumes such as lucerne and a natural pelletised high roughage feed, which only contains natural forage is also ideal. Sometimes it may be necessary to supplement them oral grade daily formula and perhaps added protein may be of benefit also. Below is a chart on the recommended levels of roughage per day. An excellent source of roughage I am currently recommending is the Harrys Choice range of feeds as this is the only prepared feed on the market today that is truly natural and extremely high in roughage. These feeds do not contain any molasses, by-products, colours, flavours, simply no added nasties. These feeds contain only Australian grown hays and for the performance feeds Australian grown barley and oats, just natural goodness. The company producing the feeds is Moulamein Grain Co-Op is owned and run by farmers. Plus, every bag you purchase 50 cents is donated to Cystic Fibrosis Australia. The added bonus is all the feeds are produced in a certified organic mill. For more information on these amazing feeds go to harryschoice.com.au Maximise pasture by rotating and strip grazing. Look at dividing your paddocks, particularly if you have large paddocks. If you have a small amount of land, like I do, you can still divide your paddocks by creating different sections and closing them off when they are over eaten. A clever idea, is to allow access to a walking track and a quiet, rest-

Round bales in slow feeder nets are an excellent way to increase roughage in your horses diet. ing area so that horses move and then rest in places that aren't full of grass. With small properties make sure you pick up your manure and don't harrow. Try a slow feed net/bin to reduce wastage and increase hay life. If you are lucky enough to have access to round bales invest in a slow hay feeding net which you can secure safely over the round bale. This not only slows your horse's chewing down but also lowers wastage. If you don't have access to a round bale then invest in large hay nets with small holes, or a slow feed bin. This is particularly useful for those managing easy keepers as you can use lucerne and not have them eat it all before it touches the ground Some horses eat dirt or chew bark, this is quite common in domesticated horses and the licking of dirt for example is often a way to increase salt intake. In some studies, types of dirt contain higher levels of iron and copper it is thought that horses seek out this type of dirt and will lick the dirt to uptake these nutrients. We don't really know why horses tend to lick dirt or chew bark but it does

appear that horses behave this way if perhaps their diet is nutrient deficient. I believe the best way to eliminate this type of practice in horses is to ensure that horses have an appropriate level of roughage always. We don't have a good understanding of the horse's ability to selfmedicate however. The secret benefits of feeding Rosehips What makes Rose-Hip Vital® Equine stand alone in the cluttered equine health market? There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature's richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9), antioxidants and flavonoids. You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a range of health benefits including hoof health, improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you're probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special? Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming RoseHip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It's a joint supplement, an anti-inflammatory, a powerful antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing systemic and/or localised inflammation, improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity. Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantbased ant-inflammatory, powerful antioxidant

and rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-based. Unlike anti-inflammatory medication Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the reliance on antiinflammatory and other pain medication. Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly recommend product for anti-inflammatory use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints. How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse? The scientific research supporting Rose-Hip Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of 30 scientific studies including 9 double blind placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focussing on antiinflammatory and antioxidative properties and the unique compound GOPO. To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as

Lifeskills program " HHH received its 3rd business award in Feb this year for " Youth and Family Services " It has been wonderful to see the program grow across different states and receive the great feedback from Youth services in relation to disengaged young people reengaging back into school or study. The program covers communication skills, body language, emotional regulation and personality education all being taught through professional horsemanship groundskills in small groups , not unlike mini horsemanship clinics! It is not Equine Therapy, it is a Lifeskills program to help prepare young people transition to a positive future. All students attend with their own case worker or counsellor, it is designed to open doors of communication for all those involved with the young people attending. Workbooks are provided to case workers so they can reinforce the techniques taught through the courses. Licensees all receive extensive training with Sue Spence and must have a high level of natural horsemanship ground skills, excellent communication skills and ideal facilities to present the program for their local communities. Media launches with each opening are also provided with many Youth Services booking as soon a new center opens. Licensees become an important well respected role model in their communities liaising with all youth and family services. The opportunity to present the program at a corporate level is also available. Please see the website www.horseshelpinghumansaustralia.com or email suespence101@gmail.com for further information. the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body's antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent damage to cellular structures. Scientific research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage. Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to 'clean' an in?amed joint by destroying the bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic free-radicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause's joint pain and inflammation. The more inflamed a joint becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it - a painful cycle. Scientific research demonstrates GOPO® discourages the accumulation of excess white blood cells from accumulating in the joint, thereby breaking the cycle of joint inflammation and alleviating pain. Scientific research also shows GOPO® protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists. In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antiinflammatory, a powerful antioxidant and a rich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

Studies look at reducing horse-related injuries Meredith Chapman has been a driving force in the Equine Workplace Health and Safety of Australia for some time now and is currently pursuing her PhD. Meredith (pictured) initially commenced her professional career specialising in Vocational Rehabilitation and worked in this arena for more than 17 years. During this time she became passionate about exploring ways to prevent people from being injured and has now refocused her career to Workplace Health and Safety. Meredith is now a Doctor of Philosophy Human Health and Social Science at Central Queensland University and is investigating the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Framework to reduce horserelated human injuries and fatalities in a work and non-work environment. She is conducting three studies. Study 1. (Survey) Aims to investigate why humans are prepared to knowledgeably or naively take risks when interacting with horses. This is a significant component of this larger study as empirical and anecdotal evidence suggests some humans are unaware of the risks when interacting with horses and others accept and take risks knowing they will eventually get injured or possibly killed. Meredith invites the public to participate in this an online survey that will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. To participate in the survey or learn more about it, please visit: www.surveymonkey.com/r/HumanRiskP erceptionSafetyandHorses The closing date is August 27.

Central Queensland University’s Dr Meredith Chapman is conducting studies which will ultimately help in reducing horse-related human injuries and fatalities and is calling on members of the equestrian community to participate.

Study 2. Using access to NCIS database she will analyse horse-related human pre-accident events, identifying WHS system failures that lead to several human fatalities during an interaction with a horse. This will categorize causation trends, assuming if anyone event or a number were changed the outcomes of the incident could have different or even prevented. Study 3. Using the data from Study 1 and 2, it will highlight specific WHS safety improvements within the equestrian industry that can be adopted in a variety of equestrian settings for analysis and moreover, monitored for their effectiveness in mitigating human injury, along with the evaluation of any changes to human risk perception and behaviours. This research is focused on identifying and filling the gaps within the equestrian industry with respect to improving WHS practices and providing guidance for reg-

ulatory processes. Furthermore, this study will provide multiple peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations in improved equestrian risk management and opportunities for cultural change through enhanced risk perception of equestrian riders and handlers. This project has the prospect of providing a significant volume of data which can be used to leverage future funding for additional research to investigate more substantial and regulated risk management processes. This research will enhance education, application and policy development in an industry that has minimal industry specific regulation or monitoring requirements. The bottom line is this research has significant benefits in reducing future horserelated human injuries and fatalities, thus reducing the economic costs of rehabilitation, in a work and non-work related context. Follow this research on ResearchGate or Facebook – Talkinabout Equine Safety

In March 1999 Deniliquin was struggling with a crippling drought, and the main form of income for the town was drying up with it, so something had to be done, a small group of community minded people came together with the aim to start a rural themed festival to bring visitors to Deniliquin, a beautiful vibrant town on the edge of the outback. Deniliquin lay claim to the title of Ute Capital of the World after that first event, and erected a Ute on the Pole in celebration of the Festival’s success, the next year a fabulous vintage ute was stunningly mosaicked. Both of these attractions along with the famous Deni Ute Muster Entrance gates are a must for “selfie” loving tourists. Today, the event annually attracts approx. 20,000 people of all ages to celebrate all things laconically Australian and the icon of the Ute. The Festival has amazing community support; more than 1,000 volunteers mobilise each year to help put on the event and after each event, close to $100,000 is donated back to community groups. Rider motivation - how we can keep it! By TANJA KRAUS I get it - life gets busy, we have demands on our time from family, friends, work and other responsibilities. It easily can become our regular habit to allow our horse time to get skipped. Every day that we skip our horse time, the easier it becomes and before we know it, we are wondering why we even have a horse to begin with. Here are a few tips on motivation, and how you can keep it! 1. Horse time is important! Schedule it into your day as something that is just as important as going to the gym or shopping,or taking the kids to school. If you are going to have a horse, you should be getting the most out of the relationship - and so should he. 2. Progress is the mother of motivation! This is true for both us and our horses. If we feel as though we have hit a stalemate or we are no longer achieving anything 'new' or improving on anything, then our motivation will go down. Try a new sport to keep things a little interesting. 3. Enter a competition in a sport that you are interested in. Deadlines are very handy in causing us to take the time to spend working with our horses. 4. Attend a course, clinic or lesson and do so regularly. Having something to look forward to and then having some exercises to try, or work with, helps to keep us excited and motivated in our training. 5. Have a study buddy. Making time to

ride with friends, whether you are just after an enjoyable ride on the trail, or you want to catch up to review some of the things you learned at the latest clinic, booking time with a friend will motivate you to get out and ride. 6. Ask yourself - WHY? Why are you feeling unmotivated? Have you genuinely lost interest in the horse? Have you put too much pressure on yourself and your horse by entering comps or going on rides before you were ready? Have you turned it into work? Have you got too many horses and you are overwhelmed about which one to work with? Do you simply lack self-discipline? Have you not raised the bar in a long time and now you are bored? 7. Consider your ethical responsibility. Our responsibility of care with our horses goes beyond basic feed and shelter. Mental stimulation and physical health are big considerations and are your responsibility, particularly if your horse is kept alone, or in a small herd and if he is in a small paddock. Keeping him fit, and of sound mental health will be achieved by keeping up the training. 8. Finally, consider your financial commitment. What is the point of feeding, vet bills, hoof care bills, dental bills, rugging, agistment, etc etc if you are not riding? Your financial outlay should get you back on track! I hope this helps you get back on track!

Making time to spend with your horse should be apart of your regular daily rou-

EAQ HORSE CARE EXPO Equine Action Queensland is proud to announce the upcoming 2018 EAQ Horse Care Expo on September 16th at the Samford Riding for the Disabled Facility (located in the Samford Show Grounds) Equine Action Qld is a fully registered horse welfare charity run entirely by volunteers based in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Since commencing in 2013, we have raised over $80,000 and we have assisted, rehabilitated and re-homed 22 horses through our foster carers network. We've also helped many horse owners to provide better care for their horses by providing educational resources and supporting educational events. Sadly we turn away many more horses than we can adequately care for (due to limited funds & carers) and as a result we have chosen to take a different approach (i.e. education) to address this unfortunate situation. From humble beginnings in 2016 the inaugural EAQ Horse Care Workshop was held in Samford Farmers Hall with a small but enthusiastic group of presenters & stallholders and was attended by around 130 guests. Due to it's resounding success the "Workshop" has developed into the more comprehensive "Expo" which is held annually at the larger RDA facility at Samford Showgrounds. This years Expo will run from 9.00am - 4.00pm incorporating an extensive range of expert guest presentations, live demos, around 50 trade stalls, a fashion parade, carriage rides, children's activities and food & drinks. It is our vision that this sharing of information will encourage better welfare for horses in the future. As an added bonus some of the RDA horses will benefit by receiving complimentary services/treatments during the live demonstrations. The event is FREE for attendees, includes FREE show-bags for the first 100 guests to arrive (NB: 1 per family) and there will be lots of give-aways and raffle prizes drawn throughout the day. Attendees who register through Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/free-eaq-horse-care-expo-tickets47661596117 will automatically be entered into a unique prize draw however pre-registration is not compulsory so come and join us for what will be an incredible, equine focussed experience. For further information please contact our Event Co-ordinator Melissa Hanwright email: event@eaq.org.au or ph: 0418 439 924

Riders Excel at Pony Club State Championships The 2018 Pony Club NSW State Showjumping & Jumping Equitation Championships were held from Saturday 7th until Tuesday 10th July at the Morisset Showground with 185 young Pony Club riders taking part with exceptional results. Hosted by the Zone 24 Clubs including Cooranbong, Mangrove Mountain, Tall Timbers and more, the State Championship attracted 170 entries in the Showjumping and just shy of 100 entries for the Jumping Equitation. Riders represented their Zones from all over NSW aged between 9 and 26 years old to participate in 4 days of competition. The Championships welcomed world-class course designer John Vallance who carefully crafted four rings of Show jump fences for riders in D, C, B and A Grades. Locals from the Zone 24 Pony Club committee were excellent hosts, providing a sponsored Riders Retreat and canteen for attendees to enjoy. The Showjumping started the Championships off on Saturday & Sunday with competitors taking part in four classes including AM5, Grand Prix and Accumulator events. Overall winners in the Championship grades were presented with the 2018 Age

The Horse Report Three-year licensing for racing trainers gets the go-ahead Queensland's thoroughbred, harness and greyhound trainers are set to benefit from an improved licensing system which will deliver three-year licensing and online licence renewal. Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the changes from the previous annual licensing system were a win for Queensland trainers. "Instead of renewing their licenses each year, Queensland trainers will hold a licence for a period of three years before they're required to renew," he said. "In addition to this extended licence period, thoroughbred trainer licence categories have been simplified to assist in the licensing and renewal process. "These are sensible changes that will reduce the administrative burden for Queensland trainers without sacrificing the integrity of the licence system." Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said the changes were being implemented after a consulta-

tion with the industry and a year-long trial of three-year licensing for stable hands and kennel attendants. "The consultation period resulted in mostly positive feedback from trainers who told us they're happy the administrative burden of licensing would be reduced by this change," he said. "Three-year licensing just makes sense and will make the

licensing process and renewal easier for trainers. "It means trainers will spend less time filling out forms, and

it will free up QRIC resources to give staff more time to deliver other services to our clients." Relevant racing participants will receive information about the changes via email and will be able to follow the link to the relevant online portal on the QRIC website to make their payments when they are due. The new three-year licence changes for all trainers are being implemented from the current licence renewal period. Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound trainers are encouraged to visit the QRIC website. For further licensing and registration information www.qric.com.au or phone 1300 087 021.
