Obtain evidence based, scientific, diagnosis! By DAVID LOVELL BSVS
Diagnosis of some problems can be a process of elimination.
between a parent and their child, and almost every owner will do anything to provide the best for their horse. Unfortunately, horses are an extremely expensive and resource intensive animal to care for and in many cases, the human simply cannot afford to provide the absolute best. That being said, I am always amazed as to the extent of the sacrifices many people make. If we accept that all owners only want the very best for their horse, then the basic fundamen-

tal that we all have to be aware of, is that if the animal has a problem, there is one way, and one way only, that we can provide the best possible care and that is to be absolutely certain of what the exact problem is. This can only possibly be achieved by obtaining an evidence based, scientific, diagnosis! This is where the problem of finance becomes a factor as this process can be very expensive. In theory, in an ideal world, the person best able to provide this exact diagnosis should be the veterinary surgeon as they have spent five very tough years at university learning everything there is to know about the health, well being, and husbandry of the horse. They have been taught to be "problem solvers" and it is impossible to objectively solve any problem if we do not know what the exact problem is. My training was over 50 years ago. Nothing in the basic fundamentals of how to perform a proper and thorough examination of a situation has changed and today's under-graduates still receive exactly the same principles of problem solving. The first step is to define exactly what the owner's perception of the problem is, and then the examiner goes through the process of obtaining a very detailed and comprehensive history of what has been happening and what has been the management of the animal in the past. In very many situations, this is by far the most important part of the assessment as many clues can be obtained. The next phase is the actual clinical examination of the animal. In this process, the veterinarian has been trained into how to assess each and every body system and how they interact with
Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse
When I went to veterinary school, as we entered our clinical years, it was suggested to us that "80% of everything we look at will almost certainly get better through natural healing powers, 10% will either die or never return to function, and there is a 10% range of cases where veterinary intervention and expertise will make a significant difference ". This is perhaps a little cynical but the reality is that it is really fairly close to the truth. I have been fortunate enough to spend the best part of the last 50 years working in the horse industry as an equine veterinarian, and what a wonderful career path it has been. Over the years I have met many people who own, train, or manage horses and to me, the most gratifying part of being involved is the unbelievable bond that universally develops between the human and the horse. In nearly every case, it could be said that the horse was as important a family member as any. The emotional bond between an owner and their horse is usually as strong as that
each other. Signs and symptoms are assessed and classified as to either being normal or abnormal and eventually a bank of factual information is accumulated. In nearly all cases, these facts can then point to some other forms of much more sophisticated testing modalities, (x-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, laboratory testing, etc.), each providing more and more evidence and facts. Throughout this process, the examiner is formulating a list of possible differentials and gradually eliminating them based on new evidence, until ultimately we arrive at a confirmed diagnosis. So, two important factors come into play. The first, and often most critical, is cost. Now, there is not really one person on the planet who is not looking for the "best price", and the cheapest and simplest way of doing things. This is a fundamental feature of human nature. But it is also very true that "We get what we pay for". The second critical factor is the experience and individual expertise of the person doing the examination, and this can be a very telling reality. Sufficient to say that the selection of who is to perform the examination is critically important, the choice is up to the owner, and the criteria on which to make that selection are obviously wide and varied and I am not going to go into that area. Ultimately, the pathway to follow probably depends on the "seriousness" of the problem. In my opening statement, I claimed that "80% of most problems will probably get better no matter what is done", and it is this fact that has allowed the exponential explosion of the plethora of lay service providers that flourish in the equine industry. They offer an easier, cheaper and far less complicated or invasive "solution' to the horse owner, and because of the 80 rule, has a very high success rate. This success is usually either because there was never a real problem in the first place, or nature and the passage of time solved the issue. Such "success" invariably impresses the owner and word of mouth enhances the reputation of the provider and the cycle perpetuates. That is the way of the world and so be it. Continued page 11

The Horse Report
The Horse Report
Save anxiety and consult an equine health professional From page 10
The horse world is fascinating and I see two very common scenarios that help the proliferation of non evidence based medicine. The first is in racing, and here the simple problem is that the horse simply cannot run fast enough. Everyone lives in hope and so much money, time, and effort is spent attempting to make winners out of cart horses, (I might say the veterinary profession is also often involved in this fruitless exercise). The second is in performance horses and here unfortunately the rider simply does not have the skill level to get the horse to perform. Rather than accept this as reality, most riders will spend an inordinate amount of time and effort attempting to find out what is wrong with the horse that will miraculously solve the issue. Surely a much better and efficient way of dealing with any issue with a horse is to seek the help of a properly trained professional charged with the responsibility of achieving a correct and confirmed diagnosis of exactly what the problem is. This can only be achieved via a comprehensive examination of each animal. We were also made aware at veterinary school of a critical second principle to be very much aware of, and that is "That rare things occur rarely, and common things occur commonly". This should be fundamental in any situation and the examiner should focus on looking for the common cause of a problem rather than wasting a lot of time looking for
Making informed decisions about the welfare of your horse is crucial when it comes to health issues.
some bizarre issue. This is where the experience of the practitioner can be very important and in many cases, the signs and symptoms can lead the examiner to arrive at a "probable" diagnosis based on the balance of probabilities, and in most of the 80% cases, "recovery" will occur. For the other 20%, a more comprehensive and expensive examination is necessary to establish a diagnosis that is beyond reasonable doubt. What I have found really amazing is the incredible turn around that almost universally happens in each situation where we finally arrive at a positive diagnosis. Miraculously the status of the case seems to immediately improve and the animal almost immediately seems "cured". I am sure this is simply the removal of all doubt and the confidence one obtains with
knowledge. I see two situations where a confirmed diagnosis is of unmeasurable value. The first is the unfortunate situation where the problem simply cannot be cured. Unfortunately this situation is relatively common in performance horses, where unlike other species; "usefulness" is dependent on the animal being "sound". At least now, the owner knows and can make informed decisions about the horse. Nowhere is this more important than in lameness cases. Many of these conditions are due to the conformation or biomechanics of the horse, or where there has been tissue degeneration to the point that "cure" will never happen. Many of these cases can be managed, particularly with corrective shoeing or medication, but these treatments are repetitive, expensive, and cannot be stopped as the problem has been determined to be incurable. Again, we can make an informed decision. The second situation is where the results of the examination have determined that there is actually nothing wrong with the horse. In this case, the so called problem is perception by the owner, often behavioural or missmatch of the horse and rider's skills and abilities. I always regard this as a great outcome as once again, we can make informed and rational decisions about the management and future of the horse without endlessly persevering and "living in hope" The single most valuable tool in the management of any problem with a horse is to achieve a proper diagnosis.

New year, new horses for sponsored riders Technyflex-sponsored riders take on new horses for the New Year. Para Equestrian Victoria DaviesKoch has recently purchased a new PRE (Pura Raza Espanola) stallion. "A close friend of mine in Spain is an FEI rider of the PRE horse and, like me, has the challenges of rheumatoid, so she knew exactly what was required for my next horse regarding safety, comfort and performance," she said. In early October Victoria collected from quarantine nine-yearold Joyero JF III. "I call him 'Luis' as I can't quite get the Spanish tongue twirl when attempting to pronounce 'Joyero'. "He's a magnificent 17 hh approved PRE stallion and he's stolen my heart. A big teddy bear who's highly intelligent. “He senses when I'm not 'well' and he took to walking next to my mobility scooter like a pig takes to mud! "A good temperament is the uppermost priority, and he certainly has that, but at the same time I wanted to import a stallion of quality to provide mare owners in Australia the opportunity to breed to a quality PRE stallion with all the correct trimmings. “A proven sire with offspring on the ground, high quality bloodlines, correct movement and a proven performance record. "His bloodlines actually consist of the world's most renown PRE
Victoria Davies and PRE (Pura Raza Espanola) stallion Joyera JF III. ancestors which shaped the PRE for dressage. 'Joyero' is closely related to the Olympic legends Fuego de Cardenas and Invasor II. "He's working beautifully at Prix St Georges level with incredible passage and Spanish walk. He's also trained to harness, which might come in handy when deteriorating health stops me from riding. "My aim with 'Joyero' is to campaign him at the highest level of FEI Para Equestrian and in open dressage working my way up

the levels with the help of my coach, Alycia Targa." Brett Parbery’s Grand Prix ride sold in America - three new horses now in training. "The awesome DP Weltmeiser has found a wonderful new home in the US,” Brett said. “Following the World Equestrian Games in Tryon 'Rabbit' stayed with Boyd and Silva Martin in Pennsylvania and has been sold to a delightful amateur rider, Christina Morin. "He was bred in Australia by Susie Duddy and her parents, Brian and Barbara Marheine, and he's the last in a long line of successful horses to come from their Hunter Valley breeding program. “The Duddys and Marheines have been outstanding supporters of Australia dressage, and of me, my family and my business. I'll forever be grateful for their unwavering support. Thank you! "'Rabbit' was an amazing and important horse, and he'll be profoundly missed, but it's very comforting to know he's in such great hands with Christina." In 2017 Parbery relocated his business to Terry Snow's Willinga Park at Bawley Point
NSW. Snow secured three horses for Brett in early October - 'Fusion,' eight-years-old from The Netherlands; 'Theodore', from Germany, another rising Grand Prix gelding, and from Denmark 'Spot On' a five-year-old stallion. "I can't thank Terry enough for entrusting me with such beautiful horses,” he said. “We're all very excited to be starting this journey alongside such a great man." A big thank you from Comvet to all new and existing clients for a very successful EQUITANA 2018.

2018 Northern NSW Off the Track series Off The Track Program In several states of Australia and New Zealand they have an Off the Track program aiming to facilitate the placement of retired thoroughbred racehorses in second careers as performance and pleasure horses and educating the community about the various life after racing options, versatility of use, and the appropriate care and retraining of the thoroughbred. When acquiring horses directly from a racing stable or sale yard, it is important to remember that the horse has been fed a specialist racing diet, exercised regularly and will be accustomed to a racing stable routine. These horses will take time to acclimatise to their new lifestyle and unless you are an experienced rider, it may be better to seek the assistance of a trainer or professional coach who can advise on the suitability of a horse for your riding capabilities and ambitions. On the Northern Rivers in NSW a group of dedicated horse enthusiasts have set up an Off the track show series. Each of the northern rivers agricultural shows have put on their pro-

We are trying to bridge the gap between racing and retraining by providing special ridden classes at our Agricultural Shows. Many local trainers from our NRRA(Northern Rivers Racing Assoc.)as well as Racing Clubs , general racing enthusiasts and horse lovers have contributed towards holding these classes. Our Final Champion of Champions will be held on Saturday 17 November at
Bangalow Show with over $1000 in prizemoney. Other states of Australia especially Victoria are also running these types of classes with Racing Victoria providing support financially In addition to sashes, garlands and equine products, Racing Victoria has provided significant prize money sponsorship, with Open Champions receiving $1000 and Runner Up Champion and Newcomer Champions receiving $500.

Female participation in racing on the rise In just seven years, Magic Millions Racing Women (MMRW) have inspired thousands of women around the world to become actively involved in thoroughbred horse racing and has injected millions of dollars into the industry. Nearly 1000 horses have been registered over seven years for the $500,000 bonus on offer for all-female owned or leased horses in the $2 million 2YO Classic, now conducted on The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday. More than $22 million has been invested alone in the purchase of horses targeting the bonus for this coming January. Introduced in 2012 as a way to encourage greater participation, recognition and development of women in the thoroughbred horse racing industry, Magic Millions coowner Katie Page said the initiative had exceeded all possible expectations. "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the Magic Millions Racing Women effect," Page said. "It seems the lure of a $500,000 bonus was just the trigger many women needed to step into active ownership. “We knew the expertise and passion was always equal to men. “You only have to go to the Magic Millions January Sales to see how well-represented women are behind the scenes. "Zara Phillips MBE signed on as MMRW Patron almost from the start, she had witnessed firsthand the inexplicable thrill that only comes from watching your horse finish first past the post. She was a big part of taking the MMRW message to the UK and Europe. "We're particularly delighted to see the way word has spread and the impact Magic Millions Racing Women is having on the international racing scene. “One of the most successful syndicates, 'It's All About the Girls', brings together 40 women from eight different countries. “This means that these women now have connections to stud farms and trainers around the world and that they are at the cutting edge of developments in world racing. "In the UAE, Phoenix Thoroughbreds has created the first female-only syndicate and Japan now has 'Umajo' - areas exclusively for female customers at racetracks. "The bonus was established in response to the women we knew

Fast Facts about Magic Millions Racing Women The Magic Millions Racing Women incentive has led to: Increased female ownership: 998 2YO thoroughbreds being registered as solely owned (or leased) by women over the seven years the initiative has been in operation. Nearly 50% of the 170 registrations for the 2019 MMRW Bonus have first time owners. Increased sales: $22.6 million worth of yearlings purchased for the Racing Women's Bonus during the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sales Series. Investment that invigorates the breeding and syndication of yearlings. Women competing: A total were already horse-lovers, but what has caught us all by surprise is the growth in participation amongst women with no previous connection to the thoroughbred industry. “Now they're catching up on a regular basis, making decisions about trainers, race schedules, designing colours and enjoying the thrill and fun of a day at the track. "I think if you examined the data
of 30 MMRW eligible 2YOs have competed in the $2 million 2YO Classic, since the 2YO race was first run with the MMRW Bonus on offer in 2013. Women winning: MMRW syndicates have won three of the six $2 million 2YO Classics since inception of the Bonus - Real Surreal (2013), Le Chef (2015) and Sunlight (2018). Each win in turn creating the largest prizemoney payouts in Queensland racing history. More jobs: 70 trainers from across ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and New Zealand have picked up extra work training MMRW horses. in each of the major markets, thoroughbred racing would come close to the fastest growing female participation sport in the world - granted it was coming off a low base." Irishwoman Elaine 'Legs' Lawlor, who runs the Australian investments in 'It's All About the Girls' and is a board member of Ireland's Goffs Bloodstock, is one of the most influential women on the world racing
scene. "Women are brilliant when they get together, they make things happen," Lawlor said. "For so long, women watched their husbands who were involved in the business, but weren't involved themselves. “Those times are changing. When they've invested in their own horse, they bring so much energy, they have so much fun and the friendships we've all formed are just fantastic. "Magic Millions Racing Women is the only incentive anywhere in the world specifically encouraging women to get involved and it has sparked something special in our industry. “Syndication gives more people more access to a horse without costing the world and gets more people involved." Queensland racing identity Linda Huddy is keen to one day claim the MMRW Bonus and joined Katie Page at the official launch of the 2019 The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival. "Magic Millions Racing Women is changing perceptions and changing the industry," Ms Huddy said. "This isn't a man's world, women are very welcome. “I'm noticing the changes in racebooks where there are more women listed as owners, on Racing Australia and at the track.”

Billy Slater saddles up for Magic Millions Recently retired rugby league superstar Billy Slater has signed as an ambassador for the 2019 The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival. Slater, a former trackwork jockey for trainer Gai Waterhouse, will play in the Celebrity v Jockeys game ahead of fellow Magic Millions ambassadors Zara Phillips MBE, international polo legend Nacho Figueras and former leading Australian player Rob Archibald playing in the feature game at Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo on Sunday, 6 January. He'll saddle up again on Tuesday, 8 January to ride in the Thoroughbred beach run ahead of the Barrier Draw for The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday. This is a stunning event that sees Australia's leading jockeys thundering along Surfers Paradise beach from 6am with thousands of people watching on. On Tuesday night, Slater will join the who's who of Australian and international racing at the Magic Millions Launch Party on the Surfers Paradise foreshore and from Wednesday it will all be about business, with Woodside Park Stud presenting a yearling on behalf of Slater Thoroughbreds at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for the first time. Slater joined Magic Millions coowners Katie Page and Gerry Harvey at the official launch of the 2019 Carnival on the Gold Coast with Page saying they wasted no time approaching Billy about becoming an ambassador following his retirement from rugby league. "Billy is the perfect fit for Magic Millions and we're delighted to welcome him as an ambassador for 2019. Billy's life-long love of horses is now his post-footy career. Billy has always read the play, and this could be his best move yet," Page said. "I think many people are aware of Billy's history with the Thoroughbred industry, but few have seen him ride. “We can't wait to see his extraordinary athleticism and instinctive competitiveness kick in when he joins some of the best in the business during the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo and during the beach race at The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Barrier Draw. "We're also thrilled to help kick start his career as a breeder of Thoroughbreds. Gerry and I love the horse business - Billy and

Nicole are perfect examples of the fabulous people this industry attracts. "With Billy's involvement, with the record number of lots for the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and with some exciting prospects for the $10 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday it is really shaping up to be one of the best Carnivals yet." This will be Slater's first Carnival and he's looking forward to joining the action. "I've always had two great passions in life - rugby league and horses - and now that my footy career is over, breeding horses has taken over my drive to succeed," Slater said. "I really am so excited to become an ambassador for The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival and my family can't wait to go. "I didn't ride much while playing footy so I'm a bit nervous about getting back in the saddle. “I've got a strong competitive streak, so I'll be fitting in a few lessons before playing in the polo and to prepare for the beach race. "With our first yearling going through the sales I'll also be taking a very keen interest in all the auction ring action - keeping an eye on what prices are and working out our own values."
The Star Gold Coast is naming rights partner of the carnival for the first time in 2019. The Star Entertainment Group Managing Director and CEO Matt Bekier said the foundations are in place for a compelling 10 days. "Magic Millions is a quintessential Gold Coast event, it continues to grow as a major drawcard on the national events calendar and has multiple points of appeal, from the yearling sales to the polo and, of course, The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday on January 12,” he said. "The appointment of an Australian sporting superstar, Billy Slater, as an ambassador will further amplify that popularity. "We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Gold Coast, and to our Broadbeach property, where a range of thrilling and unique experiences will complement the excitement of the carnival." Queensland Minister for Tourism Industry Kate Jones said Magic Millions is a unique event that they are proud to partner. "It's great to see the addition of a great Queenslander, in Billy Slater, to a great Queensland event like the Magic Millions," she said. "This is a festival that not only

boosts the state's racing industry but showcases the Gold Coast's stunning beaches and amazing hinterland. "The Magic Millions is crucial when it comes to growing Queensland's major events calendar which will pump $780m into the state's economy this year and continues to enhance our reputation as Australia's best destination for major events." 2019 The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival Calendar Sunday, 6 January: Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo, Doug Jennings Park, The Spit Tuesday, 8 January: AM The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Barrier Draw, Surfers Paradise foreshore - PM Magic Millions Launch Party (invitation only) Wednesday, 9 January: Opening day of the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale (Book 1) (888 lots), Magic Millions Sale Complex, Bundall Saturday, 12 January: The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday, Gold Coast Turf Club Sunday, 13 January: 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale Book 2 commences (234 lots), Magic Millions Sale Complex, Bundall. Determining how much hay to feed By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Dip. Nut. Š 2017
Page 18
Horses need to eat a minimum of 1-1.5% (on a dry matter basis) of their body weight in roughage per day just to keep their gut happy and healthy.
equine diet and horses really should consume approximately 1.5 to 3% of their body weight on a daily basis, it is recommended that at least half of horse's diet should be roughage in the form of hay or pasture. The equine gastrointestinal system is easily upset and if sudden changes are made in the diet it can definitely increase the risk of colic and other digestive issues. Many parts of Australia experience low rainfall, and subsequently, very poor pasture growth. When the weather gets cooler, we are getting a lot of questions from horse owners with little or no pasture, on how best to replace the grass component of
their horse’s diet. The choice of possible hay types, given the current season, may be more down to availability than any other factors, but where available, good quality pasture/meadow/grass hay is normally a good starting point. No matter what sort of hay you can get (and provided your horse or pony doesn't have any additional issues affecting hay type/consumption), the guidelines around amounts generally follow the same rules. Here is a quick guide to the main questions. How much hay should I feed? Horses need to eat a minimum of 1-1.5% (on a Dry Matter basis) of their body weight in
roughage per day just to keep their gut happy and healthy. Majority of hays contain around 85-90% dry matter. Horses will typically consume between 2-2.5% of their body weight overall each day as a combination of pasture, hay and hard feed (though we have all come across some notable ponies who are out to set the record for more). Ideally, most horses and ponies should receive 70% roughage (or more) as part of their daily diet. To obtain individualised diet advice for your horse, please feel free to contact us via email on science@hiform.com.au or phone our office on 1300HIFORM
www.hiform.com.au
The question 'what is the right amount of hay for my horse and how should I feed it?' is often asked. Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage, within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse's digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. We suggest feeding a feed that is not wet or soaked because this does not encourage the normal process at the point of the mouth and the mouth is the first contact your horse makes with his feed. If you are using supplements you will be required to dampen the feed but this means damp bordering on dry, not wet or soaked. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. Take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a Safeway or Coles shopping bag, not very big. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45 L. We know quite a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract and it does seem a little bit out of whack. But in the wild as nature had intended, the horse will survive extremely well because he or she is not expected to ingest large amounts of feed at one time but rather is out grazing continually moving around stopping to rest when required, to drink and sleep. Roughage is undoubtedly the most important basis of the

Wading through a sea of over-information and what they’ve achieved and not just what they can do with their horse but what they’ve been able to have their students achieve. If they can help others to achieve their dreams and goals, there is a good chance they can help you to achieve yours also. You and your horse deserve nothing less.
By MEREDITH RANSLEY How do you tell the difference between sh#@ and shoe polish? Between something of worth and real value or something superficial and of little real use. Between something of substance and experience verses something with no real depth, no proof or past evidence that can stand the test of time? Right now I sit with a group of incredible people. A group of dedicated, knowledgeable, experienced horsemen. People who spend much of their time, effort and energy trying to further not only their skills with horses but also finding ways to better help the horses and humans under their influence and care. In short, Professional Horsemen. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve had people come to me seeking help after wasting many hours, a lot of money and risking injury by taking ‘advice’ and ‘training’ from the myriad so called ‘horsemanship professionals’ who are currently flooding the globe with their questionable skills. Through the advent of social media, it has become incredibly easy to snap a glossy picture or two of you and your horse, write a few wise words and promote yourself from the ranks of amateur to supposed professional. And how is the unsuspecting horse lover, seeking help with their horse, supposed to be able to wade through the ocean of over-information to determine the genuine article from the weekend warrior.
Page 20
Too much information on social media can mask what is useful and valuable to horse owners. Finding a recognised source of information which can be backed up by experience will deliver better results for horse and rider.
I’m very proud to say that every member of the Quantum Savvy Team is a professional horseman. Someone who is genuinely committed to helping others. Between us we have hundreds of thousands of hours of working with all types of horses (and humans!) across the world to create a knowledge bank that is staggering. And each member of the team
wants just one thing….to share their knowledge and skill with as many horse owners and horse lovers as possible. My advice to anyone seeing help with their horse is to do your research, thoroughly. And that means, look beyond the glossy photos and the flashy ads. Get to know the person your dealing with. Ask them about their experience
About the author Shane and Meredith Ransley started Quantum Savvy Horsemanship back in 1996 to share the benefits of their vast experience with horse lovers everywhere. Combining more than 40 years of working with horses between them, Shane and Meredith have travelled Australia and the world, teaching and studying horses and horsemanship, honing their skills and passing on their knowledge to thousands of students world-wide. On their travels they have met with and learned from many good horsemen, from the outback of Australia to the ranches of Montana and have experienced many valuable lessons that are now formatted into one natural horsemanship program. Utilizing the internet and the Quantum Savvy Horsemanship Correspondence Program, participants can learn about natural horsemanship from their own home and be personally coached through assignments by an experienced team of professional horsemanship coaches. The Horse Report
Trust your instincts: Chanel's story By ANGELA DAVISON More and more people are beginning to recognise that the animals in their lives are emotional beings, and the horses in our lives are no different. A horse can be trained, and the processes followed each step of the way correctly, but if the emotional state of our horse changes, we know that the results we get will change as well. We've all had the experience of preparing for a competition and being able to do everything at home, in that safe, well known environment, to perfection, only to arrive somewhere new with new sounds and new surroundings, with the horse's change in emotional response to those new things meaning communication breaks down. Horses are emotional beings, just like us, and they can carry stress and trauma with them through their lives. This is the story of mother and daughter show jumping team Anita and Alison Ostenfeld, and their beautiful 2 ½-year-old filly, Chanel. When they brought her home for the first time it was clear she hadn't been handled much but Anita and Alison worked on gaining her trust through groundwork and gentle handling. They worked carefully and methodically, not rushing or pressuring her, following the steps they had used many times previously with great success with the other horses they have worked with. One day, they found Chanel had run through an electric fence and had ended up in a different paddock nearby. She somehow sustained no physical injuries, thank goodness, so all seemed well from the outside. A week later, Alison found Chanel away from her paddock mate seemingly frozen in a corner of paddock. She'd clearly been there most of the day, and hardly moved for hours. It was perplexing to say the least.
When it comes to looking after your horse, trust your instincts. Another incident occurred where Chanel caught her tail in the electric fencing, panicked, and ran off into the distance, once again pushing through the electric fence. Luckily they found her but she was "frozen" in a the corner of a neighbour's field. Again, no physical injuries were found, nothing obvious to be seen. They moved Chanel to a one-acre plain wire paddock where she either stood in the corner or galloped flat out to the next corner. Until Anita and Alison moved the trough to 'her' corner they had to personally lead her to the water trough so she would drink. Her feed trough was about halfway down the fence line, so she'd bolt to the feed, grab a few bites whilst pawing the ground then bolt back to a corner, her heart racing and looking petrified. The one blessing was that she was happy for Anita or Alison to approach and handle her. The ladies, particularly Alison, were Chanel's safe spot. It was heartbreaking for the two ladies to watch, and they were at their wits' end when they contacted me for help. They took a hair sample, sent it in, and I did a thorough Hair Assessment to find out what was going on. I discovered that while Chanel's adrenal glands and liver were compromised because of the three months of self imposed terror, Chanel's autonomic nervous system had been out of balance for over 18 months.
The root cause of Chanel's imbalances had started before Alison and Anita purchased her (and who knows what had happened to her?) but symptomatically nothing had shown except young horse nerves. Then her first run in with the electric fence gave her another almighty scare quickly followed by the fence seemingly biting her again - all compounding her Autonomic Nervous System imbalance - her flight trigger response went out of her control. Mentally/emotionally she was full of fear and doubted herself which made her feel gloomy and unconfident. The poor thing really was in a state. I made an individually tailored herbal and flower remedy solution for Chanel to start the healing process. Soon after, Alison and Anita sent this feedback to me: "Chanel is doing really well. Within days of starting the treatments she was behaving almost like a normal horse - even more normal than before her fright with the electric fence. "She has stopped racing to and standing in the corner of the paddock completely. She happily grazes anywhere in the paddock and walks up to greet us. She looks happy and relaxed all the time and only bucks and bolts around with excitement (not terror). She has even stopped pawing at her feed trough while eating and has long sleeps sitting down
everyday. We have even noticed her lying out flat!" Thank goodness this lovely mare had such compassionate, and understanding owners to look out for her. Chanel is almost at the end of our 15 week treatment program, and continues to improve. When we retested her halfway through, it was clear to me that her mental/emotional balance had improved enormously. No longer was she holding onto all that fear. She indicated that she loved her environment, her humans, ridden work and free jumping. These are super shifts in such a short space of time. We've all had experiences with the horses in our lives where we have felt that there was just something not quite right. Even when on paper we may have ticked all the right boxes, followed all the steps and done all the right things, that little feeling in your gut tells you that there's something missing. Trust that instinct. Don't dismiss your feelings. You know your horse better than anyone. You horse should not simply be alive and surviving, they could be emotionally, mentally and physically well, balanced and thriving. I've seen the proof of that over the last three decades of my work with horses and people from across this country, and it humbles me every day. About the author Angela Davison had a thriving mixed human & horse herbal practise for 12 years until the year 2000 when she was ready to specialise in horses. Award-Winning Angled Safety Stirrups From the designers of Toe Stoppers and WTP bits, comes a revolutionary new safety stirrup irons. STS "Space Technology Safety" irons are the only irons in the world to win an Australian international design award for safety. With their unique design, they provide better foot support and balance. The improved foot tread helps prevent foot slipping forward. By preventing the rider’s feet slipping forward into the iron, in the event a rider falls, the bar formation and the rubber post prevent the rider’s boot being hooked up in the iron and dragged, greatly reducing the risk of injury or death to the rider. Judges’ comments: "This is a great idea with the potential to significantly improve health and safety in the professional horse-riding industry. The safety irons are well-made and finished and the safety feature is a true innovation that will help save lives of riders and horses." The STS irons have been approved for use by Equestrian Australia, Riding for the disabled, Australian Pony Clubs and the racing industry and feature a unique angled foot support to ensure a correct foot position with heels down, and
The STS irons are approved by Equestrian Australia, RDA, Pony Clubs and the racing industry a very strong foot grip to prevent feet slipping, even when jumping big fences. The rider will remain balanced and on the ball of the foot with their heels down. In addition, the centre and outer bar prevents the feet from slipping forward. Riders have stated the extended platform also reduces stress to the knees, legs, ankles and feet. The unique features also reduce the risks of a fall, and the flexible rubber post allows the boot to come out, which can prevent a rider being hooked up and dragged.
Riders statements: Kerrie Bowman - elite eventing rider "These irons are amazing, I came off and they worked perfectly." Naomi Burton - "Brilliant, keeps your feet in the correct position, everyone should be eventing in them." Judy Fasher EA - "From a coach’s view point, the rider finds a balance and maintains it better because their weight is distributed evenly on the ball of each foot, an excellent product." Aussies win at Cowboy Dressage World Finals Australia's Tanja Kraus has returned to Australia as the Cowboy Dressage World Finals and Gathering 2018 Top Hand Champion. Tanja was the Cowboy Dressage Top Hand Champion for 2018, and Phil Monaghan has come home the Reserve Champion High Point Vaquero Division and the Soft Feel Champion in the Vaquero Division. By TANJA KRAUS I thought I would share once again the story that has led us to this point in time. Phil and I first headed out to the United States in 2014, to meet Deb and Eitan Beth Halachmy, the founders of Cowboy Dressage, in person. Phil and I had been interested in Cowboy Dressage, and working on getting it started in Australia, for a couple of years, and we thought that meeting 8 (Eitan) & Deb in person was the next step. Eitan started posting on Facebook about the next World Final Gathering, and how they would be introducing a new event called Top Hand. Here is an excerpt from the Cowboy Dressage website which explains a bit about Top Hand. "In the tradition of the Cowboy
Tanja Kraus and Phil Monaghan- flying the flag for Australia at the Cowboy Dressage World Finals. and the ranches of the west, there is no higher compliment than being christened the top hand. “All cowboys worth their salt strive to be worthy of such a title. It is not a title given lightly nor one that is awarded to a man that hasn't put in their time. It is a title of honor and respect. While the cowboy needed to be a man of many skills, including some of the dirtier ground crew work, the highest skill of the cowboy and the one most respected was the horseman. “In all the skills the Top Hand had mastered, it was his skill as a horseman that most earned him
the title. “Creating that partnership and relationship with a horse requires a rider that is dedicated to the goal of soft feel. While it takes time to develop a true partnership in a horse, a rider that embodies soft feel can cultivate partnership in any horse that he mounts. “A true horseman can quickly adapt to communicate with each horse that he comes into contact with. You might say the rider that has embraced the principles of soft feel and partnership in Cowboy Dressage is worthy of being called a Top Hand." Eitan was promoting the event
worldwide, and Phil made a comment 'would love to be there' and 8 wrote back "come on over and we will find you horses". So the decision was made for us to head back in 2015, to compete in both the Top Hand Event and the World Finals Show. There were a few hiccups, and when Phil and I arrived in late October 2015 we had no horses to ride in the event. We decided to just attend the event to watch, and we began to make our way from LA up the coast, and enjoy the trip up to Rancho Murieta where the event was to be held. Eitan was sharing parts of our journey, and we received a message from Kerrin from City Limits Ranch, who said: "you are in our area, would you like to come and visit our ranch". We thought it would be pretty cool to see a ranch in California, so we said yes, and we were invited to stay for dinner. Over dinner, the conversation turned to Top Hand, and we admitted that we didn't actually have horses to ride as they had fallen through. "we will get you horses was the reply. “We will make some calls, come back tomorrow morning at 9, and we will let you know how it went".  Continued page 28

Make it easy for your horse to succeed By SUZY MALONEY B.Eq.Sc Here's a good question to ask “When I am with my horse am I making it easy for my horse to succeed or difficult? Sometimes I see people making things difficult for their horse, resulting in stress, reduced learning and health issues due to raised cortisol levels. This can all be fixed with a slight shift in the way we think. When a horse presents with an issue we basically have three choices: 1. We can accept the issue and proceed anyway. 2. We can try and make the horse do it. 3. We can change what we're doing to make it easier for the horse. Sometimes the first option is not available due to work or safety requirements, and the second option results in stress, so I vote for the third option. Recently I observed a woman in a stall with a loose horse repeatedly hounding him to move his hindquarters away. He was a new horse and had yet to find his way in the new environment. The woman had entered the stall and the horse presented his
Don’t overthink what you want your horse to do and how you will get it to achieve what you want - keep it simple.
hindquarters to her. She told me that the horse must never present the hindquarters to a human and must respect her. She continued harassing the horse to yield the hind quarters and face her. The poor horse had his ears back, was showing signs of stress, and had no idea why she was hounding him. She continued doing the same thing over and over with the same result. In her mind this was the way to do it and she wouldn't stop until the horse did exactly what she wanted. In the process the horse presented his hindquarters to

her about 10 times. Someone asked me to demonstrate what I would do in this situation. I went in, walked straight up to him and stood in front, said “hi and held his halter while stroking and scratching his head and sharing time with him. The woman asked me when I was going to start training. I told her I'd already achieved my goal, his head was facing me with the hindquarters away. I'd walked in, gone straight up to him and interacted with his head. Not once did he present his hindquarters to me and I was showing him that humans are good to be with and to have the head toward me. Very quickly there was no need to hold the halter as he was happy to be with me and we started to form a relationship.
When I walked off he followed, head towards me. I left the stall, waited a while, then walked back in and he came towards me, head first, to say hello. He did not present his hindquarters to me once. This is a great example because it's so basic and simple, but two approaches were so different. The woman’s resulted in multiple presentations of the hindquarters creating potential danger, plus stress for the horse. Mine resulted in higher safety levels because not once did I have his hindquarters facing me, and the beginnings of communication and relaxation. It seems simple so why is it so hard? I feel one reason is because people are over thinking. There is so much information on horse training online and peoples heads are filled with rules and regulations, what's right and what's wrong. While thinking is important in learning, when with a horse it seriously gets in the way. We need to come from the heart and stomach, using intuition, not the head. If we come from the head we miss the communications from the horse. Horses don't operate on that level so we can't operate on that level when we're with them. Instead of thinking 'how can I make my horse do it' think 'how can I help my horse do it'.

Horses helping kids to grow stronger Television's famous Mr Ed aside, horses are not known for their conversational skills but they are astute readers of human emotions - not books. "This is why they're so valuable in helping to heal damaged or confused lives, especially young people who have experienced neglect, abuse or other kinds of trauma," Michelle Hyde from St Vincent de Paul Society's Breaking the Barriers (BTB) program said. Funded through Vinnies local shop sales, BTB works with families and communities, including schools, where children are socially disadvantaged or at risk. School breakfast programs are one investment, as is the Horses Helping Humans program run by renowned horsewoman Sue Spence at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast. Sue was a showjumping champion in NZ and came to understand the therapeutic value of horses through her own battle with ADHD. What she did to calm her own stress she now puts into practice with others. The combination of a large

horse and small person may seem an unlikely one, but there's ample proof that a wellmanaged interaction can deliver huge benefits in terms of children's personal wellbeing and social behaviour, often for life. The 'secret' is that horses, despite their size and strength, are prey animals that flee if they feel threatened. Conversely, they behave with amazing warmth when the person approaching them controls their emotions, relaxes any stress, and behaves with what Sue calls "calm assertiveness".

Among the thousands of people who have visited her over 14 years, Sue fondly remembers the children Vinnies has sponsored to undertake the five-hour program, either on a half-day or three-weekly basis. Take 11-year-old Jake (not his real name) who grew up in a Tweed Valley town, witnessing domestic disputes within his family, eventually leading to violence. His stepfather had alcohol issues and his mother, who had brought other children to the relationship, was taking drugs.
Jake performed poorly at school, often not attending and when he did, being defiant to teachers and aggressive to other students. The school system struggled,Jake was at his third school within two years. ""If you didn't know how horses function you wouldn't believe it possible, but Jake came right out of his shell, parked the latent aggression, and was a changed person," Michelle, also an experienced social worker, said. Vinnies’ BTB program is an important part of many care packages. The young people learn to gently back their horses away from them to create healthy boundaries, how to circle their horses around them on a four-metre lead, encourage them over small jumps and lead them through an agility course. Michelle said as well as the huge personal benefits there's a real financial saving. “In many ways this can be better than more traditional ways of assisting disadvantaged youth into a more productive life," she said. For details contact Vinnies on 02 66215835.
Riding to success on borrowed horses From page 26 So, upon our return the next day, Kerrin and Dink said, you can ride our horses. . So they took us down to the arena, let us loose with their horses, and well you can probably guess the rest of the story. Four years later and we have been every year. I think what I am most proud of, is that we are riding these horses that only see us once per year, for about a week, before we take them to a competition, and really put our relationship to the test. We really are the 'underdogs' as we are competing against people who are riding their own horses. Our horse's aren't Cowboy Dressage horses either. Smoky, the horse that Phil rides, was a beginner roping horse, who got severely injured - Dink and Kerrin got him for the cost of the vet bill. Year round he is part of the City Limits Ranch horsemanship program, which helps troubled and at-risk youth. Triscuit, the spirited little mare that I ride, is a working cow horse, and now goes camping and on trails. The first time we took her to Cowboy Dressage, she couldn't figure out why there were no cows in the arena. Phil and I both ride in the World Final event, and the Top Hand
event each year, and this year Phil had great success at finals, bringing home Reserve Champion High Point Vaquero, and Soft Feel Vaquero. Unfortunately, during the Top Hand event, he could feel that there was something 'not right' with his horse and withdrew midride. I won the Top Hand Championship this year, after having a great qualifying ride on Triscuit, the complete opposite of how she had been performing at finals! On to the next day of competition, and the mystery test, and she still gave me all she had. The mystery test is a challenging test, with a comprehensive list of required maneuvers. The final test in the Top Hand Event, can be daunting, as each rider who is in the Top 5, has to switch horses and ride a fellow competitors horse, after only two minutes to familiarise themselves. We then ride the mystery test on our new mounts. Sparkles, my switch horse was a lovely buckskin mare, and we really had figured each other out by the second half of our test together. Four years ago I rode into that Top Hand arena, with a racing heart asking myself why on earth I was there. This year I tried to simply enjoy my rides.

Murwillumbah Pony Club
Want to join a pony club? Pony Club NSW is a not-for-profit organization invested into the development of horse riding in NSW through targeting grassroots, and elite development programs, competitions and education programs. It exists to encourage horsemanship amongst its members, to provide appropriate coaching and competition, and to raise awareness of sportsmanship and citizenship of its members. The main objectives are: * encourage young people to ride and learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding; * provide instruction on riding and horsemanship and to instill in members proper animal care; * promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, cultivating strength of character and self discipline. So if you are looking at joining pony club in 2019 there are many pony clubs throughout NSW (and around the country) where you can find out more.
One is the Murwillumbah Pony Club based at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. It has great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors, and friendly helpful members. Rally days, clinics or gymkhanas are held most Sundays along with social functions, fundraising events and an end of year trophy presentation. The Murwillumbah Pony Club holds an annual three day camp in January. The kids get to meet new friends from throughout the Northern Rivers, learn valuable skills in all disciplines from instructors, play games not only on horseback but also on foot with their new friends. All meals are catered for and there are stables to keep your horse safe. Bookings and payments are required prior to the event. For further information contact President Glenda Bowkett 0412 491 839 or senior instructor Paula Anthony 0413 733 294
CABARITA BULL & BRONC SPECTACULAR Don't miss the action at the next Cabarita Pony Club Bull & Bronc Spectacular in January 2019. Thrills and spills, bucking bulls and broncs, poddy calf rides and barrel racing will be on the action packed program in the centre arena on Friday, 4 January. Plenty of seating will be available around the arena or take a blanket and be even closer to view the three hour program. Gates open at the Cabarita Beach Pony Club Grounds on the Tweed Coast at 5:30pm NSW time for a 6:30pm start. Plenty of cowboys will be showing off their riding skills on the bulls and broncs, trying to make the eight seconds time, just to get a score. Some of the best bucking stock will be there on the night challenging each rider with twists and turns to unceremoniously dump them in the dirt. Even the young cowboys will have their moment in the spotlight trying to stay on board the poddy calves. Not forgetting the cowboys protectors, the brave bullfighting clowns, using their speed and precision distracting the bull. The cowgirls and their barrel racing horses will be showing off their racing skills, aiming for the fastest times negotiating the three barrel course. Come and cheer them on, the louder the cheers the faster they go. Ian Bostock, the comedy clown, will be providing fun and laughter with his corny jokes and antics with his ever faithful sidekicks. His good old mate "Harry" has survived a round or two up against some of the meanest bulls, but he never complains. Live band performing on stage will entertain with great music to finish the night. Food and licenced booth facilities are available throughout the night. (No alcohol to be conveyed onto the grounds) Police and security will be in attendance. Adults $20, Children & Aged pensioners $10 (under 15yrs), Family $50 (2 Adults & 2 Children under 15yrs) All enquiries, contact Chubby Everingham 0408 113 174 DON’T LET YOUR EVENT BE MISSED PROMOTE IT IN THE HORSE REPORT MAGAZINE COMPLIMENTARY ADVERT DESIGN FREE CALENDAR OF EVENTS LISTING PRINT MAGAZINE, ONLINE MAGAZINE, FACEBOOK AND WEBSITE
