Be prepared for emergency situations

By TANJA KRAUS I guess we all hope that we won't have to deal with an emergency situation, particularly when it comes to our horses.

They can be flighty, stressed out and seemingly illogical, particularly in the face of danger.

Recently we had to evacuate 10 horses from our property, due to the threat of out of control bush fires.

We were lucky in a lot of ways; 1. We had people that could help drive trailers - one friend had a two horse trailer, another had a stock crate that could take three, we had our own two horse, so this meant we only had to do a couple of trips each.

2. We had somewhere to go. As it turned out once we made this decision, within a few hours of moving them to the new location, we were alerted that this new location was also under threat, as was a few hundred kilometres of the east coast. Upon assessment of the property we had evacuated to, which also had 16 horses, it was deemed to be the best location we could be in, in terms of managing the horses during a fire.

3. The majority of our horses were easy to handle, catch and load. Do they get excited in a stressful situation - of course, they are horses. All of them can be caught easily and all of them load well except two, who will load but just need a little more time due to lack of experience.

All of our horses will also load onto any trailer (straight or angle load, step up or ramp).

This was probably the most important part of the entire operation.

The first two points you could call good fortune or luck, but the third, that's the result of us investing in our horses’ training, from day one.

Investing in your horse's mental health as part of their training helps to keep you and them safe in times like these.

Even our two that weren't 'straight on' loaders took maybe 10 or 15 minutes to get in the trailer confidently and smoothly.

These two horses were only hesitant as they have only been trailered a handful of times.

But what helped is that both of them have done lots of trust-building training, confidence training, and solid citizenship training.

These often overlooked areas of our horses’ training are a huge investment in our horses’ overall mental health, which of course translates into saddle work.

As part of the foundation of my horses’ training, all horses get; Citizenship training - leading, trailering, rugging, pickup feet, and all the things that we do with our horses on a day to day basis.

Confidence training - helping our horses become 'thinking horses' and building their ability to solve problems and find solutions "Action not Reaction" Trust Building - Exposing our horses to 'scary things' and building and preserving their curiosity, helps the horse build trust in humans.

All of these, of course, are reflected in our horses’ day to day behaviour, their riding, and of course when they are under stress.

I noticed that our horses who are usually not really worried when one gets taken away or moved etc were particularly in tune with the entire herd's location and did get stressed when someone was moved beyond the 'safe bound-

ary'.

This is of course because they are aware of the danger, and the way to protect the herd from danger is to 'huddle up' and get closer.

Knowing our horses’ psychology is also vital knowledge for us to have, so we can help to predict their behaviour.

What was particularly noticeable to me was that even though they

were stressed, they did not become dangerous, or difficult to handle, they just got a little 'up' but still responded to their handlers.

This is exactly what I want to happen in my horses if they get stressed - they remain citizens enough that they can be handled.

Wilson Sisters enjoy peace of mind with safe fence system

Any horse owner’s worst nightmare is finding their trusted mount tangled in a fence, cut, bleeding or maybe even dead from an encounter with a fence that has proven far from suitable for keeping them safe and contained.

The Wilson Sisters have given their fences a makeover, choosing to use the highly visible Gallagher Equine Fence Wire and are pleased with the reduction in the number of injuries to their horses.

“We did a lot of research on different fencing options before choosing the Gallagher Equine Fence Wire. It ticked all the boxes for us,” says Kelly.

No-one is more familiar with the risk of injury than Vicki, Kelly and Amanda Wilson.

Well known for their work taming wild horses around the world, the sisters are New Zealand’s most prominent equine siblings and have gained a public following both in New Zealand and internationally.

They also have an enviable show jumping record, claiming many wins at the sport’s highest levels.

Over the years, thousands of horses have been through the Wilson Sisters during camps and clinics, as well as their own team of performance horses.

While accidents are few and far between, the sisters have seen and experienced first-hand far too many encounters with typical high tensile farm fences, as well as accidents in gates and from post and rail fencing. These have included legs caught in fences, wire cuts and scratches and

catching hooves in gates. They are injuries often requiring weeks of intensive nursing to get right.

Thanks to their relationship with Gallagher, the sisters were given the opportunity to have their property re-fenced with Gallagher equine fencing systems, including Equine Fence Wire, insulators and gates all designed specifically with horse’s needs and challenges in mind.

Working with Gallagher and the Fencing Contractors Association of New Zealand, the sisters pulled out the old standard farm fencing around the property and commenced a fencing makeover that has exceeded their original expectations.

“We wouldn’t have considered our original fencing to be that bad, and thought it was pretty typical. Sure we had the occasional injuries but so does every horse owner.

When Gallagher pointed out room for improvement, we saw huge potential to eliminate many of the issues we’d been struggling with over the years. Now we look back and see so many injuries that could have been prevented if we’d put safer fencing in earlier.”

Since installing the Gallagher wire eight months ago they haven’t had any injuries in the newly fenced paddocks and couldn’t be happier.

After a huge storm in their local region, the Wilson Sisters’ local vets tended to a number of fence related accidents.

One equine property had three injured and one dead.

“As a horse owner, the most important thing is keeping our equine partners safe, since changing to Gallagher we’ve noticed the difference and only wish we’d changed

“Our horses came through just fine, not a scratch on them. It’s a huge relief being able to go to bed at night, or away to shows on the weekend, and know the horses will be in their paddocks when we return and safer than ever before.”

The fence system comprises largely of outriggers to prevent horses talking to each other over the fence, which can be a major cause of injuries with horses previously striking out through the wire.

Below this are one or two hot wires.

Since installation the integrity of the fence system has been pushed to its limits when tasked with containing the sisters’ wild horses they have been training.

However with the new system the paddocks effectively have an invisible barrier that horses are respecting.

“The Equine Wire is highly visible compared to usual fencing wire. There is far less risk that they will canter into it.”

But it is not only the safety of their wild horses that gives peace of mind to the sisters. They have recently taken on some high value show jumping horses, ultimately intended for Olympic campaigns.

“Their owners need to know they are well looked after and safe, and the Gallagher fence system ensures that.”

The Wilsons have had a number of equine colleagues come to look over the fencing, and leave convinced it is the best they have seen for containing horses.

Fencing after fire Taking the humble fence post and turning it on its head to create the Insulated Line Post, Gallagher have provided customers such as Wavalee Laird with an easy to install, safe and reliable option for Permanent Electric Fencing.

Fire burning out half their new property just before moving in was compounded for South-West Victorian couple, Wavalee Laird and partner Jacquie Norris. They had bought the small farm in December 2017, but widespread fires through Gavoc in March 2018 burnt half of "Breezeholme", including all the eastern boundary fencing and two internal fences.

"We had about three weeks to get the new place re-fenced, so we were in a bit of a pinch. I had to get something in the ground pretty much straightaway to get the horses across and safe," Wavealee said.

Consulting her local Gallagher reseller, Wavalee settled on using Gallagher Insulated Line Posts, powering the fence with a Portable Solar Energizer, as a simple solution to her boundary fencing dilemma.

"I was in a big rush to get it up. So even though it was after work and getting dark, I thought 'we'll put a couple in the ground to see how long it's going to take us and how easy it is", said Wavalee.

Ad Standards finds against supplements firm's advertising

By MALCOLM GREEN Research and Marketing Director Calinnova Ltd Honesty in advertising is always an important issue and it has been shown just how important following a recent investigation into a complaint brought to the Ad Standards.

Following an exceedingly thorough and exhaustive examination, the Industry Jury appointed by Ad Standards ruled that Jenquine's promotion of Dr Stewart's Bone Formula Forte misled or deceived with respect to: * The composition of the product - the amount of chelated calcium relative to inorganic calcium * The efficacy of the tiny quantity of chelated calcium in the product * The presence or absence of the amino acid methionine The Industry Jury determined that Jenquine's marketing emphasis on chelated calcium did not reflect that only 1.65% of the calcium the product contains is actually chelated.

Over 98% comes from standard and commonly available inorganic sources, which are barely mentioned in the marketing materials.

Indeed amongst a host of references and claims for chelated calcium, the Industry Jury identified only two, well-buried, mentions of the inorganic calcium the product

The causes and symptoms of Equine Recurrent Uveitis Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU), also known as moon blindness, recurrent iridocyclitis or periodic ophthalmia, is an acute, nongranulomatous inflammation of the uveal tract of the eye, occurring commonly in horses of all breeds, worldwide.

The uveal tract consists of the iris, the ciliary body and the choroid.

These are the vascular (blood vessel) and pigmented structures of the eye.

The cause of Uveitis (pictured) is not known, but several pathogeneses have been suggested and it is the most common cause of blindness in horses.

Several aetiologies are suggested and any combination of these may be present in any given case - Ocular trauma, Vitamin deficiency, viral infection, bacterial infection and or parasitic infection.

The disease has been suggested to be primarily autoimmune in nature, being a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to any of the above agents.

In the acute stage of the disease conjunctivitis is present, with signs of ocular pain, usually blepharospasm, increased lacrimation, and photophobia.

Miosis is also usually present. After a few days, this will progress to a keratitis and iridocyclitis.

SIGNS OF UVEITIS: Common signs of uveitis you may observe include:

- Redness and swelling of the eye - Tearing - Squinting or sensitivity to light - Cloudiness or blue-ish haze to the cornea These are the most common signs that owners usually notice in the beginning stages of the disease.

Signs of uveitis can be very similar to the signs of other eye problems.

Therefore it is very important to consult with your veterinarian whenever you have concerns about your horse’s eyes.

Often it is necessary to sedate the horse and numb the eyelids in order for the veterinarian to fully examine the eye.

Although the signs may be similar, treatment for uveitis is drastically different than treatment for other eye problems, such as corneal ulceration.

el sickness, and salmonella, which are very serious and life threatening, but I am restricting this discussion to the less acute problems.

Most owners, when their horse’s stool becomes loose, immediately demand antibiotics to "control' the infection.

The reality is that bacterial causes of diarrhoea, particularly in adults, are extremely rare.

By far the most common infection causing diarrhoea is worms.

Large burdens of parasites in the gut, or encysted larvae in the wall of the bowel, cause irritation, inflammation, and increased speed of transit and worms should always be the first possibility considered as they are so common.

Most modern wormers are extremely efficient and a rapid cure can be expected, although resistance is now becoming more common and should be assessed.

Most cases of sudden onset acute diarrhoea are the result of some form of "digestive disturbance" whereby the horse ingests or is suddenly exposed to some new or different type of feed.

Obviously sudden changes in pasture would be very common, access to feed sheds or suddenly being given something like bread or carrots can all result in loose manure.

The horse's digestive system is actually made up of very large numbers of micro-organisms that are trained to process, break down and digest food and transform it into essential nutrients that are absorbed and nourish the body.

These populations of bacteria and protozoa are very labile and any sudden change in the character of the food can cause chaos within the populations, lead to

The horse's digestive system is remarkable in the fact that horses are "hind gut digesters" in that most of the food material is processed in the large colon.

The large colon and caecum are easily the largest primary organ in the horse and amazingly contain a very large volume of "watery material", amounting to up to 120 litres.

Incredibly, the small colon, which is only three metres long, has to absorb all the water out of the colonic fluid that progresses towards the rectum and eventual expulsion as formed faecal balls.

The normal small colon is unbelievably efficient at absorbing water and fortunately in most horses, little goes wrong.

Two disease processes commonly occur.

Increased speed of passage of abdominal fluid through the small colon exceeding its capacity to absorb, and degenerative

change, and diarrhoea can result.

(Note there are also many extremely serious disease conditions that can result as well).

Fortunately most of these disturbances are transient and as soon as "normality" is re-established, normal manure production resumes.

That being said, probably the most common cause of inflammatory diarrhoea results from the ingestion and accumulation of sand.

This is so common, and yet many people refuse to acknowledge or suspect it.

Horses are habitual grazers and they naturally spend most of their "free" time nibbling and nuzzling around with their head to the ground.

The lips are constantly nibbling and exploring the ground and in particular, if grass and food material are in short supply, the lips ingest dirt and sand like a vacuum cleaner into the horse's mouth which is then swallowed and start to build up in the gut.

It is amazing how much sand material can accumulate in the colon in particular.

This sand is extremely irritating and the resulting irritation results in increased speed of transit and loose faecal material.

Very often, the stool is more so called 'cow pat' rather than watery diarrhoea but all forms can occur and the loose manure is often intermittent, seemingly firming up and then relapsing.

Sand "colic" is not that difficult to diagnose and can often be recognised by a typical "washing machine" intestinal sound heard near the sternum with a stethoscope.

A definitive diagnosis can be made by placing manure in a bucket, flooding with water, mixing, and allowing the sand to sediment out to the bottom.

Sand accumulation is difficult to treat.

The single biggest issue in treatment is preventing any further access to sand.

This is often not easy as I said before, the horse is a constant grazer and will always be nuzzling around on the ground.

Each situation is different and management needs to assess the circumstances and make whatever changes are appropriate.

People rely on addition of psyllium to the feed but this only has limited effect, particularly if in the face of continual and constant ingestion of sand.

Most cases are curable, as long as further intake is ceased.

Over time, the sand already present is slowly passed on and eventually the gut returns to normal.

We have performed quite a few surgeries on horses where findings have been the presence of sand and it is simply incredible how many "buckets" of sand can be removed.

The most serious causes of diarrhoea or soft stools in the horse are the various inflammatory or degenerative bowel diseases that occur.

These are most common in older horses and they usually have a slow insidious onset but the condition is progressive and often results in serious consequences for the horse.

Over the years there have been a plethora of different names for the problems, but these days most are lumped into the syndrome "Inflammatory Bowel Disease".

Diet plays a key role in ensuring a healthy bowel in your horse.

Diagnosis is usually not that difficult as history, clinical presentation and the age of the horse are strongly suggestive.

Blood tests are informative as such horses usually have a low blood albumin and some sort of inflammatory profile. Ultrasonography can detect thickening of the intestinal wall and rectal biopsy can give very useful clues.

Interestingly a lot of these biopsies reveal a high number of eosinophils, (a white blood cell associated with allergy) in the sample. This suggests that the horse has possibility developed a sensitivity to some chemical or feed material in the gut and

has developed an immune reaction over time.

Once again, each case is different and must be analysed.

Certainly it is very important to "chop and change' the feed around and in some cases, stability can be achieved with certain feeds.

The only real therapy is long term treatment with cortisone as this reduces the inflammation and so allows better fluid absorption.

Rarely does this result in a cure, simply management.

In horses with very low albumin, we often try a plasma transfusion which, combined with feed changes and cortisone, can allow a degree of healing and slow the process.

Controlling flies in the dry is vital to reducing infections Hot dry weather produces conditions where flies thrive. By taking some strategic measures, you can reduce the risk of infection or disease.

1. Remove all manure right away. Manure is a magnet for flies. You can help to keep your horse’s eyes safe but swiftly removing all manure in your stable area.

2. Eliminate standing water. Like manure, flies are drawn to dank areas with standing water. If possible, eliminate puddles and other places where water has accumulated to reduce the fly population and keep your horse’s eyes safe.

3. Introduce predatory wasps. A natural way to target the fly population in your area is to introduce predatory wasps. These can usually be obtained from your local feed store. Simply allowing a nest of wasps to accumulate in your area will significantly impact the flies. These wasps are not dangerous to horses.

4. Use flytraps. Finally, a simple way to reduce the number of flies that have access to your horse is to install flytraps in and around your stable. This may include glue strips, insect zappers, or catch and release traps.

5. Ask your veterinarian about a feed through. Your vet may be able to recommend a medication that you can put on top of your horse’s food. Once the medication passes through your horse and ends up in their manure, the flies that land on the manure will die.

6. Apply insecticidal repellent. Sprays are available from vets, produce and saddleries.

Natural Therapy means the use of a group of five nutrients and substances with medicinal action, which are found in Nature.

These five groups are vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids and organic herb extracts.

These five groups are also found in animal feed, however in natural therapy these groups are often used in doses or concentrations much higher than that found in food.

Note that feeds like lucerne and red clover are considered as herbs, and that while some herbs have useful medicinal action, other herbs can also be toxic in high doses.

However, one of the major arguments for the advocacy of natural medicine for both animals and humans is the overall safety and low toxicity of natural substances.

Supplements... Feed Nutrient Dosage vs.

Therapeutic Dosage There has been much argument among doctors, vets, dietitians, nutritionists, trainers, etc. regarding the need for vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Some argue that a nutrient dosage as found in a 'good' diet or in a standard 'racing feed regime' is enough because it meets the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) of vitamins and minerals needed for optimal nutrition and health.

At the same time, it is generally accepted for example, that mineral electrolyte supplementation is necessary for horses during and after heavy exercise stress and sweating.

Often horse owners and professionals are using supplements in an unsystematic way, without a clear understanding of their therapeutic uses.

This means that how a nutrient is delivered to the equine’s gut is vital.

It's not just what is ingested that's important, but how well it it is absorbed and utilized after absorption.

For example, iron is difficult to absorb in any form. Often the cheapest available form

This is a wide term that can refer to the metabolic and nervous depletion associated with intense exercise experienced racehorses, or it could refer to the emotional/environmental stress associated with unfamiliar situations, travel, diet and injury.

As mentioned earlier, therapeutic doses of mineral electrolytes and natural sedatives are often very useful for recovery and prevention of both forms of stress.

Injury. In both acute traumatic and chronic inflammatory conditions, wide ranges of therapeutic nutrients are very useful. Usually single nutrient therapy, unlike synthetic drugs, has limited use in therapy.

It has been found that such nutrients are more effective when taken with other complementary substances.

The presence of another specific mineral or group of vitamins often enhances the therapeutic effect of a mineral.

This complementary enhancement of action within a group of nutrients is known as synergy and this is a principle only recently recognized and understood by nutritionists and clinical biochemists.

Naturopaths have long recognized this principle by observation, and use it to explain the usually gentle, safe action of whole herbs compared to the potent action and imbalancing side-effects of isolated, synthesized herbal alkaloids, such as aspirin (originally obtained in a complex from black willow bark), digitalis (originally isolated from the foxglove flower), and quinine (isolated from cinchona bark).

As side effects, Aspirin can cause gastritis, gastroenteritis and stomach ulcers.

Digitalis can cause gastric disturbances and heart arrhythmias, and quinine can cause ringing in the ears, nausea and deafness.

Disease and Infection.

Disease and infection are also stress problems. The body undergoes stress, as increased metabolism is demanded in a local area, as in a wound infection, or throughout the whole body, as in fever.

Increased blood flow is usually demanded by inflammation, together with increased detoxification of pathogens and toxins by white blood cells, accelerated liver function, and perspiration.

In these cases, increased dosage of a combination of therapeutic nutrients is very useful to produce the body's own inflammato-

I recommend the use of natural substances, no synthetic chemical substances, which means that all ingredients can be found in Nature, in the human and animal body, or in food and plants.

This involves achieving optimum nutrition for the individual.

Optimum nutrition means

achieving the right mix and amount of nutrients necessary for peak health and stress prevention. This is an ideal and obviously difficult to access since it varies with the individual and specific circumstances.

However, clinical biochemists are now suggesting some Recommended Optimal Allowances (ROAs) instead of RDA's.

The whole idea of natural therapies is to treat the whole horse not just the ailment and to treat

Feeding horses to survive the drought Supplied by EQUINE PASSION As the drought worsens, coupled with widespread fires and water sources drying up, keeping a horse’s weight on can become increasingly difficult.

Cost of horse feed is skyrocketing, and common feeds are even hard to source at times.

Honest consideration needs to be made if you can sustain feeding long term during the drought, or if you may need to move your beloved horse(s) on to homes that can provide adequately.

Doing so before it becomes a welfare issue may be wise and the kindest thing to do.

Ideally a horse requires 1.7% of its body weight in feed per day to maintain optimal condition.

During extreme times a horse can be managed leaner yet still healthy on 1.5% of body weight in dry weight feed. The minimum body score to be deemed lean but healthy would be a 2.

Daily feed requirement in kg other health issues. Grains include oats, corn, barley, wheat and millet.

Grains are the seeds of grasses hence high in sugar and insoluble carbohydrates (insoluble fibre pass through the entire digestive tract unchanged so little calorie uptake can occur). Cereal grain types of hay & chaff (oaten, wheat, rye) are also high in sugar and NonStructural Carbohydrates, averaging alarmingly between 22% - 39% NSC.

Your horse’s daily diet should at a minimum be 70% grass or hay to provide enough fibre to maintain a healthy gut.

During periods of no available grass, hay should be fed in small amounts and often to ensure the gut is never left empty for hours at a time.

A horse not being fed enough forage throughout the day, will develop gut ulcers and poor gut health.

A horse produces stomach acid all day and night, upwards of 30 litres a day. Leaving the gut empty for hours at a time results in reduced gut pH, allowing the stomach gastric juices to attack the stomach mucosa.

A horse eating regularly produces enough saliva (a high concentration of bicarbonate and mucus) to buffer this attack. Slow feeder hay nets are a perfect option to prolong feeding time and increase saliva production to buffer and protect the gut lining.

Providing smaller hay nets 2 to 3 times a day is ideal to ensure sufficient forage is consumed over adequate periods of time.

The balance of the daily dry weight feed can be made up of hard feeds to include balanced vitamins and minerals to further ensure optimal health is maintained.

Why you should NOT feed grains Grains have been the go-to for 100s of years. Research is now able to explain why this is likely to increase gastric ulcer incidents and

During the grain digestive process, both sugars and starches are turned into sugar. Horses have a limited capacity to digest substantial amounts of sugar and starch in the stomach and small intestine.

The excess supply of sugar and starch travels through the small intestines and on into the hindgut where the trouble begins. An increase of sugar fermentation creates lactic acid. Lactic acid lowers the pH causing an acidic environment, this in turn kills off the good microbes. The dead microbes give off endotoxins that now enter the blood stream, this chain reaction often culminates in poor gut health, ill thrift and potentially laminitis.

Most commercially prepared complete horse feeds contain grains or grain biproducts, read the label and ask if unsure.

Suitable base feeds for a healthy gut Copra, beet pulp and lupins are rich sources of ‘super fibre’ type of polysaccharides.

These super fibres have a high water-binding capacity (viscosity increases from the presence of fibrous polysaccharides).

The fibres carry volumes of water and nutrients un-digested through the small intestines and on into the hindgut (large intestine) to release their nutrients and feed the good microbes such as Clostridium, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Enterobacter and Escherichia hence stimulating colonization of intestinal microflora.

Fibre types of polysaccharides provide sustainable energy (slow release energy) and help stabilize blood sugar levels (reduction in glycaemic response).

Polysaccharides fibre have also been claimed to increase the amount of feel-good chemicals in the brain, decrease gastric emptying, increase satiety, improve immune system health and assist liver function.

Soybean base feeds can be fed short term in preference to grains.

It should be noted soybean is relatively high in phytate.

The behaviour of phytate is to bind to calcium-magnesium and/or to proteins.

Phytic acid has also been implicated in decreased availability of other minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium and copper.

Soybean contain isoflavones, there are 12 isomers of isoflavones in soybean. These compounds have been implicated in reproduction issues in animals fed diets containing large amounts of soybean meal.

Other studies attest to the estrogenic effect attributed to the consumption of soybean biproducts.

Managing equine diets  From page 20 Oils Recent research findings are now showing horses should only be fed coconut oil, hemp oil, flaxseed oil or fish oil.

Coconut oil is very good for gut health and microbial activity.

Unrefined Coconut Oil is 92% saturated fat. Two-thirds of the saturated fat is in the form of medianchain fatty acids.

Of particular interest is lauric acid, found in large quantities in coconut oil (also found in human breast milk). This fatty acid has strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties.The issue with most polyunsaturated oils (rice bran, canola, safflower, sunflower, vegetable oil) is the Omega 3:6 ratio.

Too much Omega 6 • Is pro inflammatory (increase joint pain and allergy symptoms) • increases prostaglandin formation • predisposes a horse to degenerative joint disease • predisposes to laminitis • affects coat hair quality • can lead to arthritis • can lead to obesity • can lead to mood disorders – depression • can lead to osteoporosis • can hasten growth of cancer cells Health benefits of correct Omega 3 supply include: • reduction of inflammation • reduced prostaglandin (smooth muscles contraction, help control bleeding, enable clotting after injury) • improved coat colour and lustre • reduces risk of laminitis • improves blood clot formation • essential for cell functioning – maintaining cell membrane structure • assist central nervous system development • improve sperm shape, motility and concentration • likely strong positive connection with the mare’s reproductive system • improved content of Omega 3 in lactating mare’s milk – resulting in foals with stronger immune systems • boost immune system Premixed horse feeds are typically a combination of grains (wheat, oats, barley or rice), contain added sunflower seeds and vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower or canola oils) contain sugars (maltodextrin - sugars extracted from grains).

All these inputs will increase Omega 6 in your horse’s diet to dangerous levels. Short term the results may look like quick weight gain and a temporary shiny coat (from supply of added minerals and high fat and protein content), but over time these results may inverse, and the opposite occur –

along with many other potential health issues.

Choosing base feeds selectively based on their Omega 3:6 profiles and fortifying with a feed supplement much higher in Omega 3 to 6 (hemp, fish or cod liver oil) will help improve the imbalances from hard feeding in general.

Flaxseed (linseed) has long been a favourite Omega 3 rich add-on feed supplement, however flaxseed’s ALA must be converted first by a limited supply of enzymes into usable EPA and DHA. As a result, only a small fraction of its ALA, between 10-15% can be utilized.

The remaining value of ALA gets burned up as energy or metabolized in other ways. Quantities of Flaxseed thus must be higher than using hemp, fish or cod liver oil.

Preferred hay option Having the luxury to afford and source the preferred hay choice may not be possible during a severe drought, finding some forage is more important than going without, to ensure the gut is never left empty for long periods of time.

If you have the luxury to choose what hay to feed, we recommend lucerne.

Lucerne has been recommended as preferable after comparing the content of non-structural carbohydrates or NSC of alternative hay types. Carbohydrates also include starch, water-soluble sugar, and fructan. Of note lucerne hay does not contain appreciable levels of fructan carbohydrate when compared to other types of hay. It has been shown when lucerne is baled later in the growing season with a stalkier appearance, the sugar content will be at its lowest.

Common NSC levels in hay/chaff: • Grass hays average of 13.8% • Lucerne average of 11.3% • Oat hay average of 22% • Rye grass average 39.1% • Clover hay average 11-18% Making your own base feed Weigh your chosen base feed ingredients to make up the remaining kilograms necessary to meet the minimum 1.7% of body weight.

Ideally feed cracked lupins, beetpulp and copra (mixed in equal parts or higher lupins ratio to increase good proteins for muscle building). Soak the lupins & beetpulp for at least an hour in 5X volume of water to expand fully (this is essential to avoid colic), combine with equal volume of chaff and The Nude Horse recommends FLOWERS GOLD as a premium quality mineral & vitamin supplement to ensure daily dietary needs are met.

Whip use in equestrian sports

By MELISSA MCGILLOWAY and Equine Guelph Team Whip use in equestrian sports is currently a highly debated topic across the industry.

Two presenters, Jane Williams and Kirstin Spencer, at the 15th Annual International Equitation Science Conference shared insight on whip use and its perception in riding sports.

Previous research has focused mainly on whip usage in the racing industry; however, it is necessary to evaluate all disciplines in order to effectively address whip usage concerns and any welfare issues.

A survey conducted out of the UK revealed 72% of respondents ride regularly with a whip when doing roadwork, hacking, schooling and or lessons.

Nearly 70% of survey participants agreed that whips should only be used by experienced riders.

Additionally, the great majority wanted to see tighter restrictions on whip usage in competitions including warmup.

Those surveyed were asked to share how they use whips.

The majority responded that they are used to reinforce aids, for training and should be used lightly and never continuously out of aggression or frustration.

Dr Williams said “It is encouraging to see most riders believed the whip should be used as a training aid, however when asked how and when to use it in this way, this was not always aligned to how horse’s learn, outlining a need for increased rider education.”

Another study evaluated streamed data recordings of British Show jumping affiliated competitions between August 2018 and January 2019.

This study included 285 horses and riders competing at heights between 0.8m and 1.25m. Statistical analyses were conducted to determine if and how whip usage related to performance.

The findings revealed that approximately 76% of riders carried a whip of which 14% of those riders actually used their whip in competition.

The majority of riders in a UK survey believed a whip should only be used as a training aid.

Additionally, this study found that increased whip usage correlated with decreased performance (increased faults).

These findings compliment previous studies published in 2012 and 2013.

Ms Spencer said observations found whips often being used with poor timing which may reflect rider education issues such as misunderstanding a horse’s cognitive ability and how it learns.

“Potential issues were also recognised within BS regulations, for example, significant use took place whilst riders held their reins and BS technically excludes this type of use.

Initial findings raised further questions as to the efficacy of using a whip to enhance horse performance in BS competition,” she said.

There is an appetite for changes in whip use and training. This will require riders/trainers/coaches etc. to understand how horses learn.

Understanding how horses learn will lead to effective rider decision-making regarding when and how to use a whip if necessary.

More research is needed to better understand how whips are used across the industry and in competition.

Investigating what is currently considered normal will provide insight on how to best establish and change regula-

tions in order to protect the welfare of equine partners and preserve equestrian sports.

EA supports National Safety Conference The peak body for equestrian sports in Australia, Equestrian Australia, is welcomed as a sponsor of the first national safety conference for horse sports in February next year.

Hosted by Pony Club Australia and designed for all those involved in horse sports - decision makers, coaches, officials and participants, the attendees will have the chance to hear about current research and learn what rider and horse safety changes are being made already or are under consideration.

CEO of Equestrian Australia Lucy Warhurst said one of the guest speakers will be Roger Kane, EA's National Safety Officer appointed in 2017.

With Roger's leadership and guidance, EA has been identifying, prioritising and implementing initiatives to improve safety across equestrian sport.

“Equestrian Australia is committed to being a world leader in Equestrian risk management and safety and welcomes the opportunity to support this forum and join with Pony Club Australia and HRCAV to share ideas to achieve that goal,” Ms Warhurst said.

Dr Andrew McLean will be among the guest speakers at first

national safety conference for horse sports in February.

National Safety Conference for horse sports include: Dr Andrew McLean, widely considered one of the leading academic experts on horse training. He has written six books on horse training and co-authored 48 papers for scientific journals.

His competitive career spanned 25 years and he has been an equestrian coach for over 40 years.

Because of his broad knowledge of equine psychology, he has coached some of the world’s greatest riders, coaches and trainers. He is a founding member of the International Society for Equitation Science and a Director of Pony Club Australia.

Denzil O’Brien, CEO of Equestrian Australia for five years. She has worked in epidemiological research in horserelated injury and in spinal cord injury, sports management and

project management, including with the Sixth World Three Day Eventing Championships in Adelaide in 1986.

She has been published online and in print on various topics, including risks in eventing and risks for horses in jumps racing.

She is currently a Management Committee member and Secretary of Horse SA, a community organisation advocating on behalf of the horse industry.

Denzil was previously a Board Member of Vets Beyond Borders.

Rachael Arnold, a partner at Hall and Willcox and an experienced insurance lawyer advising both insurers and corporates.

She specialises in the defence of public liability and product liability claims, professional indemnity claims and medical negligence claims.

She advises a range of industry groups including sporting clubs, and is a Board Director of

Dr Kirrilly Thompson, has a PhD in Cultural Anthropology.

She has an international reputation for her research into human-animal relations, animal welfare and safety.

Kirrilly has researched risk perception amongst eventers in Australia, showjumpers in Europe and mounted bullfighters in Spain. She has a particular interest in driving behaviour change for animal welfare and identifying meaningful motivations for increasing personal protective behaviours amongst animal owners. Kirrilly is Vice Chair of the Horse Federation of South Australia and the Participation Manager for Pony Club Australia.

Lindsay Nylund, former Olympic gymnast, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, and has expertise in biomechanics, physiology of exercise and sport psychology.

He has qualifications in fitness, training, physical education and advanced accreditation in men's and women's gymnastics.

He has developed a fall safety training program suitable for riders of all disciplines to reduce injury risk in falls and has conducted training over the past four years with riders of all disciplines. He is also undertaking PhD research on jockey and rider safety and reducing injury risk in falls.

Lindsay has published the world’s first reference book on rider fall safety training, and is recognised as a world expert on this subject matter.

Roger Kane was appointed Equestrian Australia’s first National Safety Officer in early 2017. As well as extensive management experience, he has been an event organiser and technical delegate (TD) at FEI and national events across Australia and in Japan. With Roger’s leadership and guidance, EA has been identifying, prioritising and implementing initiatives to improve safety across Equestrian sport and enable Australia to be a leading nation in setting global best practice benchmarks.

Geoff Sinclair is a former chair of Equestrian Australia. In 2018 he was appointed to lead the FEI Eventing Risk Management Steering Group (RMSG), which has the sole aim of reducing horse falls in the sport. Geoff came up through the Pony Club ranks and mainly evented, and now enjoys polo as his main horse sport. He still officiates at many eventing competitions including the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain and 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, as well as acting as the cross country course controller at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. At the 2006 World Equestrian Games he was Chef de Mission for the Australian team.

Bev has produced horses to the highest levels within this country – with horses winning at EA Nationals, SHC Grand Nationals and Royal Shows throughout Australia.

Bev has also judged at many Royals and HOTYs and will be sharing the wealth of knowledge she has accumulated over the years of showing.

This Queensland judges seminar aims to bring you insight of judging show horses not only from the judges’ viewpoint but also from a competitors and spectators perspectives.

PONY CLUB CAMP & GYMKHANA The Murwillumbah Pony Club will be holding their annual three day camp on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 15, 16 and 17.

Instruction will be provided in show jumping, sporting, show riding, dressage, mounted games and getting horse over scary obstacles.

There will also be theory lessons for proficiency certificates, fun with games, trick riding and vaulting and lots more.

To attend the camp, you need to be a financial member of a pony club for 2020, have your own horse and prenominate via the nomination form available on request.

This year, adult riders will be welcome to join in at the camp so long as there are financial riding members of a pony club.

Following the camp, there will be the annual Zone 15 fundraiser Tshirt gymkhana with a program that offers something for riders of all ages and interests from the lead line under eight riders up to associates rider 17 yrs and under 26 yrs.

Events include dressage, best presented, hack, rider, pleasure and bareback classes, showjumping and sporting events.

The club operates out of the Murwillumbah Showgrounds and offers great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members.

New members are welcome to join the club and join in the fun but riders from any club are welcome to come along.

2020 Queensland RIDING PONY Dates

RIDING PONY QLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The RPSBS Qld committee have listened to its members and for 2020 will run the annual State Show with an even bigger and better program at a new venue.

The March date was popular last year so this event will be held on 15 March, 2020 at the Jimboomba Equestrian Centre, 239 Greenridge Road, Jimboomba starting at 8am.

The qualifying performance required for entry to the Champion of Champions is 1st and 2nd in Ridden RPSBS breed classes at RPSBS breed shows, open saddle classes at Royal Shows, open classes at Equestrian Australia and Show Horse Council Shows that are qualifiers for National Events and winners of RPSBS Breed classes at any recognised show. Qualifications for the Young Judges' Final is a 1st ,2nd or 3rd in any RPSBS Young judges competition in 2019.

Champion of Champions final entries will be with your Toowoomba royal entries and close date of entries as per 2020 RASQ Horse Schedule.

Easy Riders saddle up for official comp Club to host first Work Equitation

By JANE CAMENS The development and growth over more than 20 years of Northern Rivers Easy Riders sees this innovative horse riders' club host its first official Working Equitation competition in March 2020.

The event will be open to anyone with an Australian National Working Equitation (ANWE) number.

This comp marks an important landmark for Easy Riders, whose members meet every Wednesday at the Bangalow Showground, either to train in a variety of disciplines with terrific horsemen and women, or just to ride with friends in a safe environment.

The competition is being held on a Saturday, 28 March, 2020 making the event more accessible to more people.

Anyone who doesn't have an ANWE number and would like to have a go at the Working Equitation obstacles, dressage and speed tests can join their nearest ANWE-affiliated club to get a number, or just join Easy Riders.

There's a budget half-year membership offer of just $45, valid until the end of June 2020.

Working Equitation is the logical next step in horsemanship for this club, which has changed dramatically over the years but always focussed on improving horsemanship skills.

It began in the mid-1990s by a small group who formed the club under the umbrella of the Northern Horse Action Group (NHAG), a now defunct group which worked to open trails in the area.

NHAG was insured with the Australian Trail Horse Riding Association (ATHRA) and Easy Riders members duly did the necessary ATHRA accreditation courses to become Trail Bosses, Ride Coordinators or Ride Stewards.

Most of the club's founding members were Parelli Natural Horsemanship devotees.

In the early days, the club met just once a month on a Sunday at the Mullumbimby Showground.

They strove to advance through the Parelli levels and organised irregular lessons and camps with Ken Faulkner, who helped build confidence and skills.

Founding member Beate Sommer recalled, “We learnt about hindquarter control, ribs and shoulders and passed the early levels of natural horsemanship”.

The group was keen for more practice.

They started to meet every week on Wednesday at another venue, the Bangalow Showground.

New members joined and, as the founding members moved on, the club grew more diversified. Incoming members tended to be less interested in Parelli.

Beate remembers other teachers from those days.

“Mel Fleming became the popular teacher, with her focus on seat and fluidity and horse psychology,” she said.

“There were fabulous camps at Ebor, Grafton and Bangalow. Mel's focus grew towards horse health issues, including foot health, saddles and past history.”

She also ran a course for people with fear issues handling green horses.

Working equitation attracts a lot on interest from riders on the Northern Rivers. “'The focus on horse psychology and solving problems, especially in fearful situations, was fascinating,”Beate said.

Later, natural horseman Bruce Lee became a monthly fixture at club, helping less experienced riders to build trust and confidence.

As the new generation of riders joined and the old guard of accredited ATHRA officials went their own way, the new club members voted to leave ATHRA and affiliate with Equestrian Australia.

This was a necessary step to secure the required insurance to become an ANWE-associated club.

The change of focus was inspired in part by half a dozen members who had flown to Portugal to train with master horse instructors.

There they were introduced to the likes of Pedro Torres and Working Equitation, the fast growing horse riding discipline that originated in Portugal and Spain.

“The great thing about Working Equitation is that it brings together so many skills,” Easy Riders current president, Astrid Gran-Innes said.

“Now we offer regular training with horsemen and women in a range of disciplines.

“We always have our Working Equitation obstacles set up on the first Wednesday of the month, so everyone can practice. Now we also have a new WE (40x20 metre) arena, which will be set up for WE dressage training.

“But in addition to that, once a month we have stockhorse trainer Deb Curtin come to us, natural horseman Will Hawkins, and showjumper Alex Brown who holds a popular training with poles and sometimes small jumps.”

Training - the art of teaching skills

By SUZY MALONEY B.Eq.Sc Training is the action of teaching a person or animal a particular skill or type of behaviour, according to Google.

The main word in this sentence is ‘teaching’.

Training is not about making a horse behave or perform in a particular way, training is all about teaching.

The two main components required for attaining a skill or behaviour are training and relationship. Both are necessary.

Just training on its own without a relationship will never really work, resulting in slow or no progress, or a horse that does what it's told but is dead inside (Learned Helplessness).

Relationship on its own can work if the horse already has all the skills you require for whatever you want to do.

If you're in this category lucky you! Go out and have fun with your horse and read no further.

If however you're like most of us and there are things you'd like to do with your horse which they don't yet know how to do, then read on.

When you decide to do a 'training' session with your horse, pop on your teacher’s cap.

You are in the role of teacher and mentor.

A mentor models the behaviour they are seeking in their students.

If you want a calm horse, then you need to be calm. If you want your horse to listen to you, then you need to listen to them and so on.

A good teacher wants their students to succeed.

When you're doing a session with your horse, try and always set it up so your horse can succeed at whatever skill you are working on.

Asking them to do something they are not yet prepared for is frustrating for both of you and

Training a horse is more about ‘teaching’ a horse and have it learn what you are after. can result in things going backward not forward.

Break skills down into bite sized chunks, don't try to teach the whole behaviour at once.

For example, I was with a horse who had been throwing her head up when her rider mounted.

She was an Arab and when her rider mounted the head sprung up at high speed (She'd been checked by a chiropractor and was sound, plus had no problems with the riding, just the mounting).

My job was to ask her to lower her head while the human mounted.

We did this in a series of bite size chunks.

First I asked for the head to stay down while weight was put in the stirrup, once she had achieved this without needing to be asked, we moved on to laying over the saddle, continuing until she could do this with the head down without being asked.

By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan.

We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better.

It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities.

Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area.

This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients.

This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with rePage 38

engagement back into school or study.

Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with.

The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level.

(The program is based on professional horsemanship, self regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.)

The License includes full business set up, extensive hands on individual training with me at HHH here on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council MP's and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support.

Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included.

It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

This behaviour was dealt with in 10 minutes by teaching her what we wanted for each tiny step. If it reappears we will repeat the steps, knowing that each time it will take less time.

I always try and remember what it was like when I was at school. Which teachers did I actually like, which did I learn things from, and what were they like? How did they teach?

Without exception it was those teachers who took the time to treat each student as an individual - those that were patient and kind, who listened and communicated with me as an equal.

And remember that every single thing you do is training. From the moment you open the paddock gate you are training, whether you mean to or not.

Horses have no idea that one thing is a training session and another just everyday life. The beauty of this is it means every time you go near your horses you need to be present and in the moment, you can't just 'attend' to horses while thinking about something else.
