Australia’s best cowboys and cowgirls will be in action at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre in Caboolture in May for the National Finals Rodeo.

National Finals Rodeo moves to Caboolture THE National Finals Rodeo in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association will be held at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre in Caboolture for the first time this year. Five rounds of the NFR will be held on May 1-4, the first time for almost four decades the major event on the APRA calendar has been held in the corridor between Brisbane and Nambour. APRA general manager Steve Hilton said the NFR was held at Nambour in the mid to late 1970s. “Caboolture will be user friendly for competitors with room for all horses and competition stock in the grounds of the centre,” Mr Hilton said. “The NFR will be more affordable to the public than in the past, particularly the cost of accommodation. “The rodeo is being held in conjunction with the Urban Country Music Festival which will be held for the 11th time next year on the same grounds at Caboolture as the NFR. “The APRA wants to align the NFR with a growing event like the country music.” Events will include the bull ride,

saddle bronc ride, bareback bronc ride, steer wrestling, ladies barrel race and roping. He said the number of cowgirls in the sport was increasing all the time. “The ladies barrel race is one of our most popular events with the fans,” he said. The NFR will be held in an indoor equestrian arena which can seat 3200 fans. The top 15 riders for the season in all APRA championship events will qualify for the NFR. Not only will be top riders compete at Caboolture in May but the best bucking stock in the nation will be in action at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre. Three of the Caboolture competitors in line for the finals are the O’Neill brothers, Lachlan and Jordan, and Rachelle Carlo. Lachlan is currently fourth in APRA standings in steer wrestling and Jordan 13th. Rachelle is in the top 10 in APRA breakaway roping standings after a second place overall at the Warwick Rodeo. In recent years, the NFR has been held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

Equestrian world sets sights on France Celebrated every four years and alternating with the Olympic Games, the World Equestrian Games are undoubtedly the biggest equestrian event in the world. Athletes from more than 60 nations will go against each other in the eight official FEI disciplines. These include dressage, jumping, eventing, driving, reining, endurance, vaulting and paradressage. There will be two exhibition sports - polo and horse ball also in action at the WEG which will be held at Caen in the Normandy region of France from August 23 to September 7. Given the Norman people’s passion for horse and horse sports, it was natural for France and Normandy to want to host the 2014 WEG. In France, more than two million people go horse riding, and over a million of them are regular riders. The French Equestrian Federation boasts over 700,000 license holders and 7,800 clubs,

:it’s the third ranking French Olympic Federation, after those of football and tennis. Since 1990, the Games have been held every four years, between each Olympic Games. They finally united each FEI discipline’s separate World Championship in one event, an idea that had been much discussed and aspired to but which did not come to fruition until the first FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Stockholm in 1990. As in the Olympic Games, the riders are rigorously selected from the top set of athletes from each nation and today the FEI World Equestrian Games™ encompasses every discipline of the sport. Over many successful and innovative years, the competition has found its feet and grown into a prestigious international event. Initially it was held in European venues – Stockholm (SWE), The Hague (NED), Rome (ITA), Jerez de la Frontera (ESP) and Aachen (GER) – but the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2010 were held outside of Europe for

Several Aussies have already taken part in test events in Caen and given the facilities the thumbs up. Increase your horse’s health and save money By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Increasing the health and well being of your horse, improving digestion, improving skin and coat condition, boosting the immune system and slashing your feed bill is not difficult to achieve. In this article we show you how. The Horse’s Digestive System Horses grind their feed very thoroughly to a size less than 20mm so as to prepare it for digestion within the small intestine. Fermentation and the breakdown of fibre do not occur until the feed reaches the hindgut. Horses that tend to eat too quickly or ones with poor teeth will cut down the required process allowing the feed to reach the hindgut not fully digested. This can lead to digestive upsets. Horses take about 1000 jaw, mastication movements to chew 1kg of grain and about 3000 to chew hay, pretty amazing when you think about it, 1kg of grain is a reasonable amount of grain! Routine checks of your horse's teeth is essential to maintain the condition particularly with horses that are fed hard feeds and are working reasonably hard. Sharp edges can develop on the cheek or large pre-molars and molar teeth. The horse has a bottom jaw that is not as wide as the top jaw, sharp points may develop due to the side-to-side action of the jaw, which is required to grind the feed well. What Roles do each part of the Digestive System Play Stomach Mixing food. Emission of gastric juices. Partial digestion of protein Small Intestine Major digestion and absorption of proteins, fats and carbohydrates to glucose. Absorption site for calcium, iron and other minerals, electrolytes and B complex vitamins. Large Intestine Bacterial fermentation of fibre, cellulose and carbohydrates. Bacterial synthesis of vitamins, protein and water absorption. What To Feed? Feeding a diet that is designed for the species is essential; this involves feeding a natural diet. Horses have the most remarkable grinding process within the mouth able to pulverise a handful of whole oats in just seconds. They are the only species in the world that have this particular jaw action and remember that the anatomy and physiology of horses has not changed, but the way we are feeding Page 6

has! The onset of fast food for horses with its socalled `time saving’ approach has only complicated the situation, not just for horses but for horse owners as well. Just as fast food in the human world has created a number of health problems, the same has occurred in the horse world. Health concerns include obesity often leading to Laminitis, colic, digestive problems, ulcers, loss of weight temperament changes etc. It is essential for us to consume a healthy diet for our health and well being, it is no different for horses! Horses cannot make life choices where feeding is concerned as their lives are in our hands. Balancing a feed ration to suit the horse's individual needs is not complicated but essential to achieve optimum health. Feeding a diet containing predominantly pre mixed feeds can be unbalanced and incredibly expensive. Most horse owners dampen their feed and in many cases too much, when you ad water to a pelletised feeds they becomes soggy similar to adding milk to Weetbix. Horses consuming soggy feeds are not encouraged to grind the feed efficiently. Even dry pellets have a problem in that once the grinding begins they readily become powdered. We already know that if we consume partially digested food it can lead to health problems. If your horse does not grind the feed correctly two things can happen: 1. The horse does not benefit fully from the nutritional content of the feed 2. Partially digested feed can lead to digestive problems Feeding a natural diet has many advantages and benefits: 1. More suited to the species

2. Easily altered to suit circumstances such as age, workload or disease. 3. Encourages correct digestion. 4. Ease of use and time saving 5. Very cost effective 6. A Legacy of Legends comes to Tamworth A Legacy of Legends - the inaugural Australian event showcases an innovative style of horsemanship advocated by the late celebrated horsemen, Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt. It does so by bringing together a group of professional horse people who studied extensively with them. These “mentors” will work with students during the event in clinics and give a variety of presentations demonstrating their individual approaches to horsemanship, all of which were influenced heavily by their time spent with those two legendary horsemen. Held at Tamworth’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre, (AELEC) January 3 – 5, this event has been a huge success in the USA and is guaranteed to be an event to remember. In addition to being a gathering and demonstration of devoted students of Tom and Ray, A Legacy of Legends goes a step further towards passing the horsemanship torch to future generations. Each year most of the proceeds from the event are used to provide scholarships for young people to go and spend time learning directly from some of the mentors. “What I’d really like to stress is the scholarships and paying this forward to generations to come,” Carolyn Hunt, one of the event’s founders and Ray’s widow, said. “All of these people that are doing the presentations had the opportunity to work with Tom or Ray. “And now it’s their time to pass it on and help other young people that never had that opportunity. “So I just want to focus on the aspect of passing this on to the next generation so it’s not lost, so it’s going to grow and make a better deal for the horse.” The list of event presenters is a like a who’s who in the horse world including : The Legendary Buck Brannaman, Jaton Lord ( a top 30 rider in the NRCHA) and Melanie Smith Taylor (an Olympic Gold medallist in showjumping) all from the USA. Buck Brannaman was born in 1962 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and raised in Montana and Idaho. Brannaman was for many years a disciple of Ray Hunt, one of the founders of Good Horsemanship, and also inspired by Tom and Bill Dorrance. Brannaman now teaches clinics worldwide. About the clinics, he has noted, "the goal for clinics really is to just try to get the human being to understand as much about their horse as I can help them to understand. "I've started horses since I was 12 and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over,” he said. “I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. I started to realize that things Page 8

would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does." Brannaman is also a skilled trick roper, having performed rope tricks in television commercials since he was six-years-old. For his roping abilities, Brannaman also holds two spots in the Guinness Book of World Records. Though Brannaman has said, "my dad gave us the choice of practicing roping tricks or getting whipped," he still takes pride in his skill, offers roping and cattle working clinics, and retains a close connection to the historic vaquero cowboy tradition of the US. Brannaman was one of the primary individuals who inspired the character of Tom Booker in the Nicholas Evans novel The Horse Whisperer, and was the lead equine consultant for the film of the same name. The publicity from the book and movie, along with Brannaman's approach to treating troubled horses and troubled humans with equal compassion, has helped promote other fields such as therapeutic horseback riding. A documentary about Brannaman called Buck,

directed by Cindy Meehl, won the US Documentary Competition Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. “We are fortunate to also have some of Australia’s finest horsemen including master horseman David Stuart, Brook Hazlet (cutting & campdrafting champion) and Jason Leitch (winner in two Man from Snowy River Challenges, and the prestigious 2010 NCHA Futurity in Tamworth),” Mrs Hunt said. David Stuart has over 20 years of experience from starting young horses and dealing with horses with behavioural issues to teaching people the foundations of horsemanship. With a huge amount of experience working with horses and people all over the world. His relaxed manner, comfortable presence and ease in front of an audience has meant that David s expertise has been showcased throughout the world at international shows and events, including: to the Dubai Royal Family, Burghley Horse Trials (4 star, premier 3 day international event), Horse of the Year Show, Your Horse Live, The British Horse Society s annual spring instructor s conference and Equitana Asia Pacific. David s strengths are the beginnings and the development of a foundation on a horse. Solid Foundation is about the preparation and building blocks for the future, it’s about getting a good start in life to then go on and build a future. With horses it is about getting a horse to where they are self-confident and understanding of the task at hand. Show Horse rule changes in effect from new year Equestrian Australia wishes to advise that changes to the Show Horse rules will come into effect from January 1 this year. 1. As of January 1, 2014, to align with the next re-accreditation period, Show Horse judges will not be able to use dressage seminars for re-accreditation. Show Horse judges are entitled to use dressage seminars for reaccreditation purposes until March 1, 2014. Following this time they must attend an EA Show Horse seminar. This rule change will make it mandatory for States to run a minimum of two Show Horse seminars per year to provide opportunity for judges to gain their re-accreditation. Clinics will cover many relevant topics such as paces, risk management, communication, role of officials etc. 2. Rule 4.2 will change to the following: Horses must be registered with Equestrian Australia Ltd and owned or leased by a current financial member of that State

Rule 4.7 will change to the following: Horses/Ponies must be domiciled in that State (including where appropriate within a 100 km radius of a border) for a total period of three months immediately preceding the date of that State’s Horse of the Year event. However, if the horse has not competed under saddle (with the exception of horse racing) in any state prior to purchase and is registered and eligible/qualified in the state in which it is to compete by closing date of entries it shall be eligible to compete in that respective state’s Horse of the Year event.

Biosecurity workshop aids equestrian clubs The Queensland State Equestrian Centre and Equestrian Queensland invite all equestrian clubs to prepare for the equestrian season by participating in a biosecurity planning workshop to be held at QSEC on February, 22. The workshop will cover topics including what is biosecurity, what are the responsibilities of a club's workers and volunteers, how to prevent a biosecurity incident and what to do should an incident occur. The workshop at Caboolture will include presentations by Trish Coward from Workplace Health and Safety, Fiona Thompson, Alison Crook and Janet Hull from Biosecurity Queensland and Mandy Finnimore, a private veterinarian well known to the equestrian community through her roles with EQ, Equine Influenza and the EA Hendra Virus Advisory Committee. Practical sessions will include how to put on, and remove,

P.P.E. and understanding what to look for at a venue to assist with biosecurity planning. The session will also include working through what is required in a biosecurity plan. The workshop will introduce the standardized template for a biosecurity plan and the horse health declaration developed by the Horse Industry Alliance. It is recommended that clubs attending include a number of representatives, including their Biosecurity Officer and their Stable Warden. With the support of this expert group and the participants clubs should be able to leave with a draft of their biosecurity policy. This will be a full day program and refreshments (including lunch) will be provided. There is no charge for this informative workshop however spots are limited. Bungendore hosts State championship Around 245 competitors and their horses, along with another 300 family and friends, travelled to Bungendore over the weekend of December 7-8 for the last Pony Club NSW State Championship for the year. The 2013 Bungendore Community Bank State Showriding Championship held at Bungendore Showgrounds was hosted by local Pony Club Zone 16. Ellis Brooke from Bungendore Pony Club Zone 16, was the Under 9 Champion. Jorja Power from Walcha Pony Club, Zone 13 was the 9 and Under 11 Champion. Jaime-Lee Burns from Bouddi Pony Club, Zone 24 took out the 11 and Under 13 age group. Sarah Louise Olsen from Hills District Pony Club, Zone 26 was the 13 years champion, while Juliet Sharpe from Cudal Pony Club, Zone 3 was the 14 years champion. In the 15 and Under 17 age group Montana Breust from Griffith Pony Club, Zone 21 won the 15 and Under 17's. While Brodie Howe from Stoney Range Pony Club, Zone 22 was the 17 and Under 25 years' age champion. The Champion Pony Club Zone was Zone 24, while Zone 2 was the best presented Zone. For 17 and Under 25 years age champion, Brodie Howe, this is her fourth State Showriding Championship win and amazingly her seventh State Championship title overall.

The State Campdrafting Championships involve riders demonstrating their skills at cutting a beast out of a mob in an enclosure and then manoeuvring it around a set course. As well as competing Brodie would love to give back to the Pony Club movement and

support the next generation, "I would like to get to pony club a bit more to help instruct the next upcoming stars!" All this, and in her spare time Brodie plans on heading to the Stock Horse Nationals, Sydney Royal and Canberra Royal for open Stock Horse Classes. Brodie has also done her "first break in this year with a yearling stock horse. Can't wait to get her out under saddle next year. Looking forward to bringing up my next rising stars that will hopefully follow in Will Power's footsteps. “We are starting to breed our own Stock Horses, and have our first foal due this year. I am looking forward to building up my own stud and producing my own little champions one day." New technology gives Holly an early Christmas present Horse vets and CSIRO scientists have given a surprise Christmas gift to 10-year-old mare, Holly, who suffers from a chronic hoof disease. Building on their success in developing computer software to design and print horseshoes, Holly took the first steps in her new 3D printed titanium shoes that were custom designed to fit her hoof. They may be the key to stomping out foot disease and lameness in horses. The team of 3D printing experts from CSIRO worked with horse podiatrists to scan Holly's hoof and design the 'horse-thotic' which aims to support the hoof and encourage it to heal, while making Holly comfortable. Holly has spent three years suffering from a debilitating disease called Laminitis. The horse's hoof is similar to a human finger; the hoof wall is like the finger nail and is attached to the bone underneath. Laminitis affects the attachment between the hoof and bone, causing pain and inflammation. Horse vet and farrier, Dr Luke

Wells-Smith from the Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre, said his team saw the 3D-printed shoe CSIRO built for a race horse earlier this year and started to think about using 3D printing to rehabilitate lame horses. "The new shoes will work to redistribute weight away from the painful areas of the laminitic foot and give Holly, and horses like her, the chance to recover," Dr Wells-Smith said. "Many attempts have been made in the past to cure laminitis but

it's the 3D scanning and design part of this process that is so exciting to us. "The future is looking a lot merrier for Holly this year. She should be walking normally and without pain in just a few weeks." CSIRO's 3D printing expert, John Barnes, said scanning the hoof would allow them to manufacture a shoe that is the 'perfect fit' for these complicated hoof diseases, giving the horse the best possible chance for rehabilitation.

Mini trotters put kids in the driving seat The Queensland Mini Trotting Sporting Association Incorporated (QMTSAI) is a not-for-profit sporting association for children aged 6-16 years. Members of the association compete in racing and exhibition events with ponies under harness. These events are held at registered racetracks at Redcliffe and Albion Park as well as many regional shows. Many previous members of the QMTSAI have gone on to become accomplished harness racing trainers and drivers. Support the club by becoming a member. The club is always looking for new members. Osteoarthritis and its effect on horses By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is a painful, progressive condition with no known cure. The term arthritis refers to an inflammation of the joint. There are different kinds of arthritis, such as septic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. However, the most important arthritis affecting horses is osteoarthritis (OA), which is characterized by the erosion of articular cartilage—the layer of specialized tissue that lines the ends of the bones inside the joint. Osteoarthritis is a major cause of lameness in athletic horses. Recent estimates indicate that 60% of equine lameness problems are OA-related. Osteoarthritis, historically referred to as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a painful, progressive condition with no known cure. Clinical signs of OA include heat, swelling (i.e., joint effusion or a “filled” joint), pain and a reduce range of motion in the affected joint(s). Articular cartilage is a highly specialized body tissue composed of cells (chondrocytes) embedded within an “extracellular matrix” that contains collagen, proteoglycans, and water. Articular cartilage lines the ends of the bones within the joint and permits smooth, frictionless movement. In addition, articular cartilage is shock absorbing and allows for the transfer of

body weight loads during movement. In normal joints the articular cartilage‘s extracellular matrix is continuously “turned over” or remodelled to maintain a healthy, optimally functioning tissue. This means existing extracellular matrix components are degraded and replaced by new molecules synthesized by the chondrocytes. In arthritic joints the balance between the degradation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix is disrupted favouring the destruction of the tissue. This destruction is mediated by various proinflammatory molecules such as cytokines, nitric oxide, free radicals, and prostaglandins and enzymes called matrix metalloproteinase’s. The end result is a physical degeneration of the cartilage that usually occurs in conjunction with changes in the underlying bone (i.e., formation of enthesiophytes and osteophytes) and associated soft tissue structures, primarily the synovial membrane and joint capsule. Osteoarthritis can develop in normal joints without any apparent cause. This form of osteoarthritis is referred to as primary OA. Alternatively, OA can develop secondary to trauma. Undoubtedly the most common cause of OA is low grade repetitive trauma as occurs from loading of the joints during normal locomotion. Obviously horses with poor conformation, inappropriate shoeing, or horses with other

musculoskeletal abnormality such as an untreated osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions will be major contributing factors that can increase the load. Ringbone (involving the first or second phalanx) and bone spavin (in the hock joints, such as the distal intertarsal or tarsometatarsal joints) are both unique examples of OA in the horse that occur in highload-low-motion joints. Knee chips and fetlock disease in race horses are common examples of OA occurring in so called fast motion joints.

Prognosisis variable for Osteoarthritis From page 18 Navicular disease is a particular problem in horses in which OA can be a major component. As well as the significant cartilage damage referred to above, it is becoming more and more obvious that additional serious damage to the subchondral bone further exacerbates the seriousness of OA A full physical examination to rule out there potential causes for the observed lameness (e.g., neurological diseases), a complete lameness examination, the use of nerve and/or joint blocks to assist in localizing the source of the lameness, and a synovial fluid analysis are all important first steps in diagnosing OA. Radiography (X rays) remains the primary means of imaging joints to diagnose osteoarthritis (or other bony abnormalities); however, advances in diagnostic imaging have and continue to occur. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear scintigraphy (a bone scan), and diagnostic arthroscopy can also be employed to assist in diagnosis. Classic signs indicative of OA observed on radiographs include effusion, the formation of osteophytes or enthesiophytes (which are bony changes evident at the margins of the joint that result from remodelling of the joint during the development of OA), sclerosis (increased density), or lysis of the subchondral bone. Joint space narrowing might also be evident. One of the major problems in diagnosing osteoarthritis is there often is a disparity between the observed clinical signs and the degree of changes in the bone and/or soft tissues of the affected joint(s) that are noted on radiographs. Despite aggressive research efforts, there is no cure for osteoarthritis. Instead, the goal for managing OA is to slow the progression of the disease once clinical signs of disease have become evident.

At present, a multi-modal approach to managing OA is recommended. Using a combination of therapies instead of relying on only one or two techniques is thought to maximize relief of pain and quality of life. A detailed discussion of treatment options will be the focus of a future article The prognosis for horses diagnosed with OA is highly variable and depends on a number of factors such as the number and location of affected joints, the underlying cause, the rate of disease progression, horse’s age, and response to therapy. In many cases, OA is career-limiting in athletic horses (even young and otherwise healthy horses). In horses that are severely affected, OA is a lifethreatening condition. Osteoarthritis can develop as a primary cause or secondary to other underlying conditions as described above. Since there is no cure for OA, the main goal is to prevent or slow the progression of OA. Limiting repetitive trauma to the joints, addressing underlying joint abnormalities (e.g., removing OCD lesions or articular chip fractures, improving conformation, and having the feet trimmed appropriately) are all important in minimizing the development of osteoarthritis. Some owners and trainers routinely administer oral joint health supplements, or use polysulfated glycosaminoglycans or hyaluronic acid in young, healthy horses, to decrease the chances of developing OA; however, there is no or only a limited amount of evidence that this is effective.

Insurance helps to cover accredited officials Equestrian Australia has acknowledged that there was a gap in the market for EA accredited officials to be covered by insurance if they were earning an income from their officials duties. EA has been working with Gow Gates Insurance Brokers to form a policy for insurance coverage for EA Officials. The new policy will come into effect on January 1 and EA accredited officials will be able to opt to take out additional coverage which will see them covered whilst acting in their capacity as an Equestrian Australia registered official including when earning an income or at events which are not EA affiliated. As a benefit of your Equestrian Australia official affiliation, you

can opt to take out additional insurance which will cover you for: Personal Accident Public & Products Liability Professional Indemnity Whilst undertaking duties as an equestrian official under your EA accreditation, including in an income earning capacity. The initial policy will cover officials from January 1 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; June 30, 2014, after this point the insurance will be taken out on a 12 months basis. Tips for keeping horses cool 1. Choose your turnout times: If your horse has a stable but is turned out for part of the day, do it during the cooler hours. Overnight is ideal, but if that's not possible, turnout as early as possible during the day. 2. Give him shade: If he lives outdoors or must be out during the day, provide relief from the sun. A run-in shed is best. Trees are a source of shade as well. 3. Move that air: Fans are a great way to help keep the air moving in the stable, but use them wisely. Always ensure that your horse can't get a hold of cords and plugs. 4. Mist it: If you are lucky enough to have a system to mist your horse, use it. As the moisture is absorbed from your horse's skin, it will take away some of the heat as well. Frequent misting is more effective at cooling a horse than a single dousing with the hose. 5. Lead him to water: Make sure your horse has plenty of fresh, cool water. A bucket hanging on a fence will get too warm to be appealing to your horse. If you provide clean, cool water and your horse doesn't seem to be drinking, encourage him by providing a salt block. 6. Electrolytes: If your horse is sweating a great deal, water laced with electrolytes can help keep his body in balance. Whenever you offer electrolytes, however, be sure to offer fresh water as well. 7. Slow down the work. Just because your horse has been working intensely in the heat of the day doesn't mean he continue when the temperature soars. If you have to work him in the heat, lighten the work or break it up into a couple of short sessions. 8. Stick to a schedule: Within the parameters of keeping him cool, try to stay as close as possible to his normal schedule. Too much change at one time can be an invitation for colic to develop. 9. White out: Horses, especially white or light-colored horses, can suffer from sunburn. Even those with white socks, blazes, pink noses, or hairless patches can be prone to sunburn. Using a fly sheet can help, and applying sunblock to small, particularly vulnerable areas can also be effective. Staying out of the sun's harmful rays will, of course, be best. 10. Clipping horses: Especially those with longer hair coats is important , especially those with Cushing's disease. While some coat can provide protection from the sun and insulation, a thick coat tends to hold heat in and make it difficult for the horse to cool down.
