Promising young Queensland rodeo rider Clay Hall will be out to build his points tally at the Cabarita Bull and Bronc Spectacular on the Tweed Coast .

Rodeo by the beach TIME is of the essence when it comes to rodeo and spectators are guaranteed action-packed time when the annual Cabarita Bull and Bronc Spectacular sees the dirt and dust flying at Cabarita on Friday (January 6). The charity event is again be held at the Cabarita Beach Pony Club grounds on Round Mountain Road and will feature some of the country's leading cowboys and cowgirls in action. Event spokeswoman Judy Cartwright said the Cabarita rodeo was part of the National Rodeo Association circuit with competitors hoping to accumulate points in pursuit of the prized champion's buckle. "We returned to the Cabarita ground last year after several years at Kingscliff and the response was fantastic," Ms Cartwright said. "The Tweed event has always been popular with competitors and spectators and this year we are expecting to have some quality stock ready to test the skill and courage of the cowboys. "There will also be barrel racing for the cowgirls which is a race against the clock and really tests horse and rider working as a team." The program will include poddy calf riding for the youngsters, junior novice and open bull riding and saddle bronc riding. "We will have Ian Bostock, the rodeo clown back to provide the laughs in between events and after the action, there will be live music on site," Ms Cartwright

said. The rodeo will be fully catered with food and drinks outlets operating as well as a bar so there is no BYO alcohol. "We are very conscious of making this a family friendly event of all ages so there will be a strong security presence as well." Proceeds from the night will go towards the Cabarita Beach Pony Club which suffered severe damage to its canteen in a recent storm. Gates open from 5pm (NSW) with the action commencing at 6.30pm. Tickets are $20 adults, $10 for pensioners and children under 15 and family passes will also be available. The Horse Report

Life’s a beach for Canadian wild horses By RAE-ANNE LaPLANTE I pinched my arm, waited, and then pinched a bit harder. Nothing happened. I expected to wake up in my bed, but no, my body was actually here. I sat crammed in a little plane, about to land on the beach of the mysterious Sable Island. An island isolated from civilization, with an abundance of wildlife and vegetation and stories of its crusaders buried underneath its sands. Sable Island’s paradoxical beauty is the world’s hidden treasure. I had spent the year prior fundraising, researching, and preparing myself to film an educational documentary about Sable Island and its wild horses. The documentary has been screening on Horse and Country TV and can be viewed through the station’s H& C Play App or website at www.handctv.com.au What had seemed at one point an impossible dream now became my adventure. It became the most worthwhile endeavor I have ever been part of. As our plane narrowed in on the island, I was awed by its natural beauty. Sable Island is a sand bar, with no rocks or trees, yet it is widely colored in greens. The island at most is 1.5 km wide and a mere 42 km long. The sliver of sand, trapped in the Atlantic Ocean of Nova Scotia, looks fragile, ready to disappear at any moment.

Horse and Country television has been screening Canadian documentary maker Rae-Anne LePlante’s unique vision of wild horses on Canada’s remote Sable Island.

But within it is a resilience that has kept the island standing for thousands of years. Despite my tireless efforts, I didn’t see one horse throughout my vogue in the dunes for the first two days. An island with over 500 horses roaming freely, you think I would have at the very least spotted one! On the third day I promised myself I would walk until I saw a horse or my body failed me, whichever came first. I tread along the coast, documenting the overbearing dune system and watching the seals suntan lazily along the beach. I felt a wave of calmness drift over me. Continued Page 7

The Horse Report

Unique island home produces fearless horses From page 6 As if scripted perfectly, a heavy fog begins lifting in the distance, unveiling the shadows of horses! When I reached the herd, an entire society of horses opened up to my view. From all directions horses were flocking to this inlet. A stallion trots past me, completely unaware of my presence. It is as if I don’t exist at all. The dreadlocks from his long mane whisk up towards my face, and I’m immediately intoxicated with his smell—the scent of the ocean ingrained in his thick coat. I am overwhelmed with choices of which horses to videotape first. Cautiously, I approached a small family band of five—a stallion, his wives and their two offspring. The foals perk their ears forward and step a few feet closer to me before retreating behind their mothers. I cannot help but wonder if I am the first human they have ever encountered. These horses are descended from breeds brought to the island during the late 1700s as an attempt to become this dependable livestock supply to later sell off to the mainland. Their ancestors started their journey on Sable supporting the communities that had sprouted up on the island for research and lifesaving operations. Now, the Sable Island horses roam the island freely and are protected and managed under

Canadian law. The island has certainly shaped who they have become. Sable is a very unforgiving environment. Its soft sands make it incredibly difficult to maneuver through, and the only shelter protecting the horses against the harsh winds and rains are the dunes. Sable Island seems like the worst choice to ship horses to, yet in their 250-year existence here, they have managed to flourish and adapt to their environment. There are no predators here, so they live almost entirely without fear. The sun has bleached most of their manes and their stocky stature no doubt helps keep them alive in the winters. They have an

unparalleled kindness reflected in their soulful eyes. I moved from herd to herd, documenting as much as I can of their behavior and being. Slowly, the horses begin to retreat into the dunes, as if this inlet was a meeting ground, and now they have called for lunch. I am alone on the beach, left standing still, memorized by the beauty of the free. Rae-Anne LaPlante produced “S(t)able Island: The Beauty of the Free,” an educational documentary about Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, to let people experience the island and its mystical wild horses. She hopes to promote an awareness of the isolated island and advocate for its continual preservation. The film is available at www.stableisland.com

Treating plaque build up on horse’s teeth By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Different horses develop plaque at different rates and it can become detrimental to the oral tissue and surrounding structures. This and many other reasons, is why regular dental treatment isn't just about sharp points or whether your horse is demonstrating any symptoms. Poor dental maintenance comes in all shapes and destructive sizes This is a case I saw the other day - a 27year-old Quarterhorse gelding, unknown dental history, with excessive plaque build up on the lower canines. Plaque build up on horse teeth is not just a cosmetic problem - plaque, as with human dental health, can be detrimental to oral health. Plaque is a build up of millions of bacteria that grow and feed in your horse's mouth. Over time, this plaque causes gingivitis and tooth decay and, eventually, tooth loss. However, even with these drastic eventualities, plaque on the teeth isn't a reason to panic. I've had clients call swearing their horse's tooth is days from falling out, outrageously infected and possibly the cause of all said horse's problems. But in actual fact, upon physical examination, it is just a little plaque build up, easily cracked off and maintained. The above mentioned horse was a run-ofthe-mill case in every way except for this incredible hoarding of plaque. He was fed on natural grasses, very good weight and health, no excessive sugars or unusual lifestyle factors - he was just a horse who accumulated plague easily. There is often no rhyme or reason as to why one horse has a propensity for plaque more than another. Feeding liquorice and sweet feed obviously doesn't help, but in a lot of cases paddock mates will differ greatly in the amount of

Plaque needs to be addressed when it is noticed, but it isn't a cause to panic and if you can pick it off with your nails - go for it! If it appears extreme (such as this case) it'll be a job for a qualified equine dentist. Hendra Virus outbreak recorded near Casino NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has quarantined a property near Casino in northern NSW following the death of one horse from Hendra Virus. DPI Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Christine Middlemiss said the property has been placed in quarantine by the Local Land Services district veterinarian and the dead horse is being buried. “The 22-year-old horse died recently following a period of illness and receiving treatment from a private veterinarian,” Dr Middlemiss said. Samples from the horse were sent for laboratory analysis at DPI’s Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) and results from testing at EMAI and the Australian Animal Health Laboratory at Geelong confirmed the Hendra virus. Dr Middlemiss said staff from the LLS, and NSW Health have been working with people who have handled the horse, including the property owners and the veterinarian. These people are being monitored by NSW Health. “The horse had been in a pad-

dock in an area which has regular flying fox activity,” Dr Middlemiss said. The case is the first Hendra case in NSW in 2016. NSW DPI encourages horse owners discuss a Hendra Virus vaccination strategy with their veterinarian. “Vaccination remains the most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses, ” Dr Middlemiss said. “Horses should also be kept away from flowering and fruiting trees that are attractive to bats. Do not place feed and water under trees and cover feed and water containers with a shelter so they cannot be contaminated from above. "If a horse becomes sick, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately. People in contact with horses need to practice good biosecurity and personal hygiene measures even if a horse is vaccinated against Hendra virus.” NSW horse owners and vets are encouraged to download the latest information on Hendra virus at www.dpi.NSW.gov.au

NSW Code of Practice aims to reduce horse injuries among novices and beginner riders A new Code of Practice to help reduce horse-related injuries and fatalities among novice and beginner riders has been introduced in NSW. In welcoming the announcement, the Member for Golburn, Pru Goward (pictured)said the new Code of Practice is the first of its kind in Australia and is designed to assist employers and workers in the horse industry reduce injuries and meet their workplace safety responsibilities. Of the 133 fatalities that occurred Australia-wide between 2000 and 2014, 18 per cent involved people under the age of 20. "The Code will help prevent horse-related injuries and fatalities among beginner and inexperienced riders and aims to ensure that the temperament of the horse and the experience of the rider are adequately matched," Ms Goward said. "The Code has been developed

following extensive consultation with more than 100 responses to calls for comment from key industry groups and individuals. "Numerous businesses across the state offer horse-related activities and this Code will provide them with the practical tools they need to ensure they are complying with their obligations and prevent injuries and fatalities. "The NSW Government is committed to improving safety for inexperienced and novice horse riders, such as those participating in pony clubs, at jackaroo and jillaroo schools and trail riding schools." The Code includes practical tools such as a checklist for riders and a checklist for horses, to evaluate the level and skill of the rider and also to help assess the suitability of the horse for the activity being undertaken. The Code of Practice will come into effect on 1 February 2017. The Code of Practice is available from www.safework.nsw.gov.au

Admiring advances in equine medicine By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

Dr David Lovell has seen considerable advancements in the world of equine medicine over the past 50 years as a veterinarian and looks forward to future advancements in the field.

My role in the industry has been in the veterinary medicine and surgical aspects, and yes, back when I started, a very large part of what we did was based on pretty shaky “scientific” evidence. Fortunately all of that in my industry has now changed and

we are governed by very strict rules and legislation that dictates that to maintain our job, we have to adhere to the very best practice of evidence based medicine. During the course of my tenure, my belief is that there have been three “Game Changing” developments that have irrevocably changed the way we do things and provided enormous benefit to the most important stakeholder in the overall process, our patients, the horse The first of these was the discovery and introduction of the “Ivermectin” family of parasitic anthelmintics. This happy event occurred in the early 90s and this forever changed the nature of veterinary equine medicine. Up until this point, damage caused by the so called “Blood Worm”, strongylus vulgaris, dominated the problem list of equine diseases. The introduction of ivermectin to horses was the equivalent of the discovery of penicillin in human medicine. The blood worm infected the horse by ingestion of eggs from the pasture. The eggs hatched in the stomach and the larvae invaded the blood vessels and spent an interminable nine months or so, encysted in the walls of the blood vessels, causing incredible reactions and damage. These encysted larvae were resistant to medications and nothing seemed to eliminate

I am fortunate enough to have now spent 50 years with the best job on the planet. It is actually not a job; it has been a labour of love as I eagerly look forward to each and every day spent within the horse industry. Yes, the horse industry fraternity is easily the most collegiate and fascinating group on this earth. There are unbelievable characters, extremely skilled trainers and competitors, an enormous population of passionate, dedicated and committed owners, trainers and handlers, shysters and conmen, all pulled together by an incredible devotion and passion to the one common element across the cohort, the love of the horse. One of the most fascinating elements of the industry is the seemingly endless underlying folklore, myths, and in most cases, completely unsubstantiated bank of so called knowledge that still seems to drive many of the management and husbandry habits that prevail.

them, until ivermectin. Almost overnight, these larvae were eliminated and the curse of “verminous arteritis” all but disappeared. Unfortunately, the effect was so dramatic, that complacency has developed among owners and managers and their worming programs have begun to become erratic allowing some resistance to ivermectins to emerge. We are “on to it” now and management is responding with more accurate worming returning to the norm. The second innovation has been the evolution of so called “keyhole” surgery. Lameness has always been a curse for horse owners, and a very large number of problems were related to joints and damage within. Back in the old days, the only way we could attempt to deal with them was by a large primary incision that provided extremely limited exposure and access, and worst of all, healed with major scar formation to the point that I am sorry to say, sometimes the “cure” was worse than the disease. (Incredible to believe that when I first graduated, portable x-ray machines were in their infancy and rare, and we could not even diagnose many of the joint problems). Arthroscopy has changed all this and now we explore almost every joint, get amazing exposure, and have almost no scar or healing reaction. There has been an incredible development and joint surgery, although still a major intervention has become almost routine. The third evolution, and without doubt the most amazing in my opinion, has been the understanding of biomechanics and its relationship to the underlying cause of the great majority of lameness. Lameness is devastating and the horse can be rendered useless as a competitor or performance unit. Fundamentally there are three “causes” of lameness. Infections, for example septic joints and sheaths, and the ubiquitous hoof abscess’s, direct trauma such as fractures and injuries, and the overwhelmingly majority cause, degenerative changes in the tissues.

The Horse Report

Knowledge brings bold new treatments From page 14

Degenerative changes are obviously associated with age, but they are accelerated, exacerbated, and become dominate by the repetitive low grade trauma caused by “bruising” of tissues from the loads imposed by the use of the horse. This is what biomechanics is about. A study of the way the horse uses its legs and the loads and stresses imposed by its action. For example, racehorses are subject to damage in the so called high motion joints such as knees and fetlocks. “Carthorses” have a lot of problems in their hind legs, the hocks in particular, from pulling the load. Ninety percent of the lameness in performance horses occurs in the feet and again result from stresses and strains imposed by the conformation of the animal. Never forget that the definition of insanity, is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different outcome. Obviously if the reason the horse is lame, is mechanical, and we keep doing the same thing, in spite of spending a fortune on medications and the like, then the lameness is never going to improve. Often it may mean that high speed horses have to retire and embark on a slower speed discipline, which immediately solves the problem, but when we come to performance horses with lameness issues, as stated earlier

Increasing opportunities to treat horses have made David Lovell’s love of his job even more enjoyable.

almost always in the feet, there are not many options for a change of use. What is unbelievably exciting are the rapidly emerging field of podiatry and an understanding of the mechanical loads and forces that are sustained in the feet. Here we now have a remarkable way of

being able to change through the application of trimming and shoeing methodology designed to complement and relieve many of the stresses. This field is still in its relative infancy at this time and struggling to gain universal acceptance as it requires a lot of time and commitment, but the results achieved, and the understanding of the underlying causes and steps that can be taken to improve, is without doubt the way of the future. What an unbelievable era of evolution. I have been very fortunate to have been able to be a part of it and look forward to hopefully more exciting times. Certainly the horse is the major beneficiary with the long suffering owners coming a close second as expectations of outcomes have improved immensely. Not withstanding these undeniable benefits, I believe that we as horse vets have also benefited because there is nothing more satisfying than being able to practice quality medicine and surgery, with ever increasing opportunities and expectations of good outcomes for owner and animal. A far cry from many of the questionable practices we were guilty of 50 years ago, but, as I have said earlier, a large part of the fascination and colour of the industry are the myths, witchcraft, and outlandish folklore that is part of the culture. I suspect this will never disappear. Onward and upward!

The Horse Report

Understanding dietary needs avoids problems By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist and Product Formulator Š2016

Introduction to a change in a horse’s diet must be done slowly so as to get the gut use to any differences and not compromising the bacterial balance essential for good health.

must be done slowly not quickly, the reason for this is that it can compromise the gut bacteria population. If these bacteria start dying off there is an increased risk of colic and the horse would not be receiving the correct nutritional intake. We already know that the horse's gastrointestinal tract must be treated with great respect. For those of you who have experienced a horse with colic you will know that it is a very distressing time for both the horse and the horse owner. So preventative measures are always the best option, in the management of your horse's health. There are other triggers that can cre-

ate digestive upsets in horses; this can include feeding a horse a high carbohydrate diet that is lacking in roughage. For example, feeding a horse a high grain diet, as is often the case with stabled horses and insufficient roughage might mean that the small intestine may not be able to process the feed efficiently prior to it reaching the hindgut. The possible result could be that when carbohydrates reach the fermentation process in the caecum that there could be a lactic acid build up. A lactic acid build up can influence hindgut pH level this can make it difficult for bacteria to survive.

 Continued page 19

www.hiform.com.au

Let's just clarify the terms wet/soaked verses damp/dry! I have always recommended feeding a damp, bordering on dry feed if you are including powdered supplements, there are however feeds that can be fed dry these include feeds such as Johnsons Natural Formula feeds which are steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellets. The digestive process starts in the mouth. As the food passes through the system it is broken down into a form which can be absorbed and utilised by the body. The horse's sensitive lips with their attendant whiskers are very well adapted to locate, assess, and handle the feed he wishes to eat. The sensitivity, mobility, and power of the lips are extraordinary. The front teeth, together with the lips and tongue, are used to get hold of the food and bring it into the mouth for grinding by the molars, or back teeth. The horse's powerful teeth reflect the coarse grasses he has evolved to eat, which require considerable mastication to break down the tough siliceous fibres. Feeding a wet feed simply does not encourage normal chewing and grinding of feed, in fact it reduces the desire to do so, this is not normal for a horse. Granted, if you own an old horse with poor teeth there is an advantage to feeding a damp feed, but it also needs to be the right type of feed. Feeding a wet feed can increase the risk of digestive conditions such as diarrhoea, ulcers and colic. Because the horse's gastrointestinal tract is very sensitive any change in the horse's diet

The Horse Report

Antioxidants play a key role in horse health From page 18

During this process, there can be a release of endotoxins which can be very harmful for the horse. This can create a hostile environment and will put the horse at risk for colic or laminitis. Feeding small feeds often with plenty of roughage may well be a solution to this type of problem. I am often asked this question “what do I really need to feed my horse?” Well it's simple, it's not rocket science it's just common sense. We need to remind ourselves that horses have evolved to eat only one way and that the anatomy and physiology has not changed. What has changed is man's intervention producing different types of feeds that in many cases are not suitable to feed to our horses. There is a use of by-products in feeds because they are easy to access and can bulk up a feed. However, these types of by-products are simply not suitable to feed to horses. Some will not encourage that normal chewing and grinding process at the point of the mouth. Feeding a feed that is too wet will discourage this process and hence create a lot of the problems. Horses are very simple to feed the most important rule to remember that they should consume around 1.5 to 3% of their own body weight in feed each day. At least half of this but preferably a lot more than half should be roughage. I recently completed a new diploma course which has expanded my knowledge in nutrition and genetics and the way nutrition influences gene expression. Genetics only have a small bearing on disease states in humans and animals, the major influences are the environment, in which the horse lives, toxicity, water quality, quality of feed, and reducing oxidative stress. So, what does your horse need? Your horse requires a well-balanced ration, one that you can alter and adjust when required and one that contains high-quality roughage, possibly some grains depending on the horse's workload, fresh clean water, good quality pasture and good quality hay

Oats are very readily digested and utilised by the horse

Many products require soaking, and many tend to expand

when the pasture is poor. This is when round bale's can be very beneficial. I love alfalfa because it is low in NSC and starch, it is also highly nutritious and value for money. Best of all horses love it. Remember the key to a healthy horse is a good level of roughage this will maintain a healthy digestive system in the long-term. Does your horse require grain? Well if he was a paleo horse, he would not be allowed grain. But all jokes aside grain is necessary in many cases to provide a good level of carbohydrate that otherwise may not be achieved by simply feeding roughage. However, many horses do very well on a simple roughage-based diet. I always recommend using a natural daily supplement but one that has science behind it and purchase from a company that has a transparency about the information provided to customers. Many horses require a high level of carbohydrates to perform the work expected of them. Horses working four to five hours a week for example will possibly need extra grain in their diet. My most favourite grain is always oats because you can feed them whole, they are low in starch and they are the lowest in protein of all the grains. Oats are very readily digested and utilised by the horse. Feeding steamed and rolled

barley is another option but I don't feel you require any other grains apart from these two. Let's face it they are tried and tested and have been used for centuries, they're safe and easy to feed. If you are looking to increase weight with a problematic horse products such as EquiSoy which is a full fat de-bittered soy flour is an ideal option and is only required in small amounts. A daily formula will depend on the performance required from the horse.

Ideally, the average horse’s diet should consist of at least 50% roughage.

Lost your mojo - tips on keeping motivated By TANJA KRAUS It’s that time of year - a time for reflection, a time for planning, a time for setting some goals. No matter if you rode as much as you wanted to in 2016 or you are already thinking 'I did not ride as much as I wanted to last year', we all sometimes need that bit of extra motivation. Sometimes we just feel too tired, too busy or it’s too hard when it comes to riding our horses. So I thought we could kick off 2017 with my five tips for keeping motivated. 1. Upcoming Events. I’m not saying everyone should go out and enter a competition but I am saying it would help. Knowing you have a place to be with your horse and a place to be where it is important for him to be at his best, can keep your motivation up. 2. His mental and physical wellbeing. Depending on your paddock situation this may vary but your typical horse in a paddock that’s under five acres and not being used each day is bored! I see it first hand all the time. My horses go nuts if I don't do something to stimulate their minds. Cooper will start tormenting Boogie and chasing her around, he chews fences, starts picking up buckets and throwing them, anything to try to 'do something'. If I head out and do 10 minutes of liberty, or riding, or whatever, it sure helps 'take the edge off'. If I take him on a good training session or trail - even better. 3. Behavioural issues. Does your horse misbehave when you do get the chance to ride ? It

Tanja and her horse Cooper doing some liberty work to keep his mind active, his fitness up and Tanja motivated to interact with him regularly. Photo: TRAPNELL CREATIONS

could be because he is so under stimulated in the paddock, that it comes out when you are riding. If you ride more consistently and keep him stimulated, you may find the 'naughty' behaviour goes away. Phil always used to say “I like to go for a nice quiet ride on Sunday, that’s why I ride my horse from Monday to Saturday”. 4. Fitness - his and yours. You drag your horse out of the paddock for the weekend, head somewhere and Monday rolls round and boy does it hurt! Well, I can assure you your horse is hurting too! Riding your horse during the week allows him to maintain a level of fitness an prevent him from becoming sore. Soreness can lead to behaviour issues as your horse will begin to associate riding with the pain that comes through muscle soreness.

when you rode your horse when you were a kid, just because you wanted to ? How did it turn into such a chore ? "I have to ride my horse", " I need to ride my horse" sounds like jobs - so your brain starts telling you that this is hard. What about "I want to go for a ride". I know the above four motivators are reasons for having to ride your horse, but the best one is truly because its fun and you love it - if you don't, what’s the point ? Don't forget, if you only have 5 or 10 minutes you don't have to 'ride'. Why not do some liberty, ground exercises or just an in-hand walk? Doing something with your horse everyday will make him and you feel great! I hope that this helps in giving you some extra motivation to keep your riding up,

5. To have fun! Remember the good old days

2017 Queensland RIDING PONY Dates

What’s happening RIDING PONY YOUNG JUDGES The Queensland Riding Pony Committee is pleased to announce that a Young Judges Competition has been included in the RPSBS Program at Toowoomba Royal Show for 2017. There will be two classes; 10 – 13 years and 14 – 17 years The Young Judges program is a Riding Pony Qld Committee initiative that aims to encourage young members to look critically and without bias at ponies and horses. Having the knowledge and skills to make those critical judgments is important for all judges. The committee hopes this will create in young members a desire to become future senior judges. ‘Hands on’ experience and having fun are parts of the support program that will be offered to young members who are interested in becoming judges. The program will also be available to young members who want to learn more about what to look for when purchasing ponies or horses for themselves. The RPSBS Standards of Excellence, Show Rules and Conditions of Entry are published on the website. Assessing and comparing the ponies and horses in a class is the main job a Judge does. Managing the ring, horses and safety, the competitors, a timetable, dressing appropriately and being well-mannered at all times are all parts of judging. RPSBS QLD Committee encourages its young members to become part of the Young Judges program. Visit the website www.qldridingpony.com or like the page on Facebook.
