Countdown is on for Cloncurry Challenge The countdown is now on for the 2018 Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft, one of the greatest horse events in Australia, which will be held at the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre from Wednesday, July 11 to Sunday, July 15. Hundreds will converge in Queensland's Outback for five action packed days of live entertainment, Aussie comradeship and thrilling performance horse competition. The Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft is an elite and prestigious event, attracting competitors from across the country to the heart of the Australian Outback. President of the Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft, Cheyne Williams, said the Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft was a highlight on the calendar for competitors, sponsors and spectators alike. promises to be bigger and better than before," he said. "Visitors will be able to see some of the very best challenge and campdraft competitors and horses in the country put their horsemanship to the test." "Held in the heart of Queensland's North West, the Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft is unique. “The event, the people and the
Outback environment is quintessentially Australian. “It's not surprising that hundreds of people flock to the event for five days of action, culminating in the Challenge Finals on Saturday afternoon, where contenders battle it out for the coveted Quart Pot. "There have been some significant improvements to the Equestrian Centre in the past
few months, including a new ablution block, a retaining wall (doubling as viewing platform), the installation of a permanent wing for spent cattle and improvements to the arena.“ Event secretary Stacey Robertson said plans were well underway for the 2018 event. "The official 2018 program has been finalized, and nominations are now closed," Stacey said. "Returning events include a full campdraft program, open, classic, encouragement and kids challenges, and the crowd thrilling Invitational Open Draft. “The inaugural Invitational Open draft was held in 2017 and is open to all Classic Challenge finalists since the Cloncurry Challenges inception in 1983. This exciting shoot out draft is fast becoming a crowd favorite on the program. "We are also thrilled to welcome the live entertainment for the weekend, Townsville local, and 'The Voice Australia' semifinalist, Trent Bell and friend Jesse Teinaki.” For more information, visit www.currychallenge.com.au

Creating safer places for children in NSW There have been recent legislative changes around the Working With Children Check that impact all people who work with children in both paid and voluntary roles and the organisations employing them. A full list of the changes are available on the Kids Guardian NSW website www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au with an explanation of what the changes will mean. The main changes are: * A requirement for people to keep their personal details up to date or risk a penalty * Employers are required to verify that their child-related workers have a WWCC and keep records or risk a fine * A Working With Children Check is required for all parent volunteers attending overnight kids camps, with their own child. It is important that everyone in your organisation knows the new requirement to keep their personal details up to date. Please be aware that employers (which include organisations using volunteers to work with children) can now be fined if they don't verify that their workers or volunteers have a check or have applied for one. One of the strengths of the NSW system is that it is underpinned by an ongoing, continuous check. By registering and verifying, employers can be contacted by the Office of the Children's Guardian should anyone become barred through the continuous monitoring process. Fines for not verifying will apply to every organisation where people work with kids or volunteer with kids.
Keeping children safe is an important part of organising group activities.
People need to have a check if they are in child-related work. Changes to the legislation clarify that childrelated work is when contact with children is a usual part of the work, and not just incidental. There are some exceptions, so check out the Office of the Children's Guardian's website if you're unsure whether you or your employees need a check. Finally, all parent volunteers on kids' overnight camps with their child now need a check which means whoever is the camp organiser, also needs to verify them.
DO YOU HOLD A
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK ?
The Working With Children Check legally prevents people who pose a risk from working with children but it's not enough on its own. Organisations, through their people, need to build a child safe culture with policies and procedures in place to make their organisation safe for kids. For more information check the website www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au where there is a list of all of the legislative changes with explanations of what each change means and you can also find resources for building a child-safe environment.

The Horse Report
Treatment for the coughing horse By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Coughing horses are extremely frustrating to treat due to the complex factors involved in the cause of the disease. Therefore, a simple "cure" is difficult to obtain. The problem usually begins with a sudden explosive onset of coughing, nasal discharge and a temperature. The horse is usually sick - dull, depressed and off their food. This presentation is due to an acute infection either with a respiratory virus or a primary or secondary bacterial infection. This phase of the disease process can be treated with specific antibacterial agents and a favourable response anticipated. Unfortunately, these acute episodes often cause significant tissue damage to the mucosa lining the upper and lower respiratory tract. It is this damage that may perpetuate an acute infection into a chronic cough. In order to understand how this damage results in chronic coughing, it is necessary to look at the normal defence mechanism of the respiratory tract. With every breath the horse takes, 8-12 litres of air passes through the nostrils, upper airways then into the lower airways and lungs. This air is contaminated with dust particles, pollen, environmental pollutants, fungal spores (moulds) and bacteria. Naturally, these contaminants must be filtered and removed from the body before the air enters the lower airways. Given that the horse breathes at 16-20 times per minute, there is a large quantity of contaminants that must be removed. The normal horse has billions of tiny hairs (cilia) lining the internal surface of the airways. Coated with mucous, these act as a trap to catch, filter out and collect the tiny foreign particles inhaled. The cilia then expel the mucous and contained particles up the tract and into the throat using a wave-like motion. From the throat the mucous is expelled either through the mouth or the nostrils. However, should this filtration process fail, contaminants are carried into the lower airways with every breath and establish infection or disease. Contamination material also act as a foreign body in the lower airways, irritating the tissues and provoking an intense inflammatory reaction. These factors result in constriction of the bronchioles in the lower airway which potentiates the chronic cough situation. The cough is the physical attempt by the animal to get rid of this discharge. There is also an immune component to the lower airway defence mechanism. This involves both a cellular defence mechanism and specific antibody production. The cellular defence consists of certain types of white blood cells that engulf the foreign particles and or infectious agents. Other white blood cells produce antibodies that combat foreign particles and infectious agents. Should the physical filtration and immune defences fail the net result is the development of chronic lower airway disease and chronic coughing. However, of more significance than an absence of immune reaction is the development of immune over - reaction or hypersensitivity. Many horses become sensitised to some of the particles inhaled including pollens, fungal spores and dust. Page 8
Successful treatment of a coughing horse can combine two ket factors - elimination of casual factors and repair of the body’s defence mechanisms. They become allergic to the actual material deposited in their airways. The allergic reaction to the dust or pollens further results in an inflammatory reaction potentiates the coughing. The final problem in low airway inflammatory disease is the development of secondary bacterial infections in the material accumulating in the lower respiratory system. This infection continues to exacerbate the inflammation and coughing. Successful treatment of the coughing horse is extremely difficult and can result from a combination of two factors: 1) Elimination of the causal factors 2) Repair of the body defence mechanisms Elimination of the casual factors is very difficult. Chronic coughing is rarely due to a primary infection. Therefore treatment with antibiotics will not cure the disease unless the other contributing factors are eliminated or controlled. The problem is that the horse is continually inhaling particles that challenge the already damaged defence system. The best we can do is attempt to reduce the levels of contaminating material in the air. Therefore avoidance of dust is essential. This is extremely difficult during dry periods of the year as paddocks and work areas are extremely dust. Arenas should be sprayed with water before working the horse. The housing of the horse is very important and if the horse has to be confined stables must be well-ventilated. Ideally the horse should be kept outdoors. Similarly, enclosure in floats and trucks will increase exposure to airway contamination. Allowing the horse to stop and graze every couple of hours on long trips is recommended to allow clearance of airways. Feed material is also a common source of dust and fungal spores. Therefore the quality and type of feed must be considered. Feed should also be dampened. Feeding the horse on the ground and allowing the horse to graze pasture is a very important aid as stretching the neck downwards encourages drainage and expulsion of exudates and contaminants from the airways. All aspects of the horse's environment must be evaluated. Thought should also be given to other possible sources of particulate material that the horse may be allergic to.
Once environmental factors have been considered, medical treatments for chronic coughing must be discussed. Appropriate antibiotic therapy is necessary in the initial stages to target the secondary bacterial infection present. As mentioned earlier, if the inflammatory response is overlooked this will result in only temporary or no relief of symptoms. Other products outlined below are available to modify and temper the exaggerated and severe inflammatory reaction. This results in a reduction in contamination and discharge present and creates a healthier environment in the lower airways. This allows the body's natural repair systems to restore the restore the normal respiratory defence mechanisms. Treatment must continue long enough to allow proper healing to take place. It will only be successful if the body is able to repair the tissues. In most cases the time period may be prolonged and the course of treatment can be very expensive. 1) ANTIBIOTICS - Appropriate courses of antibiotics are necessary initially to control the secondary bacterial infection. 2) BRONCHODILATORS - These are drugs that relax the spasm of the smooth muscle in the walls of the lower airways and prevent constriction. The airways are opened up and there is better movement and elimination of inflammatory discharges. This relaxation also counteracts some of the local irritation in the tissues and reduces the inflammatory response. The best example of this mechanism of action is the use of ventolin for human asthmatics. 3) MUCOLYTICS - These drugs break down, liquefy, and dissolve the exudates and accumulated material and allow it to be expelled easily. 4) ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES - These drugs are very important as they temper the severity of the inflammatory response. The amount of discharge and reaction that occurs is reduced and eventually a more favourable environment for healing is created. They also counteract the effects of allergy. Treatment and management of horses with chronic coughs is, therefore, very difficult and the likelihood of an initial and complete cure is not high. Owners should contact their veterinarian for a thorough examination and evaluation of the horse.

Leather cleaning and inhibiting mould During winter, mould and mildew are one of the most frustrating problems in leather care. Generically, mould and mildew are fungi and as the tiny `fruiting bodies’ at their tips mature, they bloom and burst to spew billions of microscopic spores into the air. Rub a patch of mould or mildew and you send those spores forth to multiply throughout everything in your tack room. Once mould and mildew spores get into leather fibres, it is almost impossible to completely destroy them without destroying the leather too. Inhibiting their growth takes diligent care with the right products. If mould and mildew invade your tack room, take these steps to limit its damage: Take mouldy leather out of the tack room and clean it outdoors. That way, you’ll avoid filling the air in the tack room with mould spores that will simply infect other items in the confined space. Have a supply of old rags that you’re willing to throw out. Start wiping away any surface mould with a wet rag. Wipe and capture as much of the mould as you can then throw the rag away. Don’t rinse and reuse your rags. That only spreads the mould spores.
Use an old toothbrush to clean stitching lines and crevices. Finish cleaning the leather using a water-based, pH neutral product to float away any remaining organic surface dirt that support mould and mildew growth. Dry the tack in the sun to allow the water to evaporate and to take advantage of the disinfectant properties of the sun’s ultraviolet light. Some traditional leather cleaners, notably those translucent bars of saddle soap that smell so good, are not good choices for mouldy leather. Instead of using saddle soap, condition your leather with a penetrating, pH-neutral product that will lubricate the leather without introducing moisture and which will inhibit mould and mildew growth. Leather Therapy Restorer and
Conditioner is a good option. If mould and mildew have invaded saddle pads, blankets or other washables, thoroughly clean these items in hot, soapy water. Add household bleach to the wash water if the items are colourfast. Dry everything thoroughly before returning the items to storage. Non-washable fabrics may need to be dry cleaned, sponged with a disinfectant solution. Discard them if they are mildewed. Wipe down the insides of storage trunks or closets with a solution of water, detergent and 10 percent household bleach to disinfect them and allow them to dry completely before filling them back up again. A light bulb left on in a closet may provide just the right amount of drying heat. Place bags of desiccant materials
inside large trunks and renew them periodically according to the manufacturer’s directions. Mould and mildew typically thrive where it is dark, warm and damp (they flourish when the humidity ranges from 65 to 85 percent), if your tack room is like that, consider installing a window to provide sunlight and ventilation. Install a dehumidifier, leave a light bulb or two burning. Hang large bags of desiccant and renew them periodically. Be proactive to keep mould and mildew at bay. After each use, clean dirt and sweat off tack and allow the undersides of saddles and headstalls to dry thoroughly before putting them back into the tack room. Dry saddle pads and blankets, preferably in the sun, before folding them and putting them away. Supplied by www.leffler.com.au

Joint supplements highly recommended "Technyflex is fantastic for my horses, it keeps them looking and feeling on top form," that’s high praise from three-day-eventer Charlotte Price based in Tamborine, Queensland. "One of my horses doesn't have the best-looking knees on the property as the result of an early injury in her eventing career,” she said. “By keeping her on the Technyflex joint supplement she continues to look and do her best without her knees suffering from inflammation. “Another horse here is a tall lanky stiff thoroughbred and the supplement keeps him feeling so much softer and suppler. "I've had great success with clients' horses on Technyflex turning older ones from feeling a little stiff and scratchy back into competition form and the young ones are on the product for prevention. I highly recommend it for any horse." As well as teaching, training and competing Charlotte is also in the throes of presenting and preparing a major three-dayevent which will be held at

After using the product for a month, all lameness disappeared and he went back to work, often competing in the summer on rock hard ground. "He recovers well and sore muscles are a thing of the past,” said Trish, who regularly uses Technyflex as a preventative. "For a 16-year-old he acts like a youngster. "I now also have two other horses which used to race in Hong Kong and both are receiving the product. “One had a fractured pelvis from his racing days and when the weather turned cold he'd become grumpy and rather unpredictable. “After a fortnight on Technyflex, his nature relaxed and he returned to the way he was before the cold season started. "The other one suffers from Queensland itch and has changes in one hock joint. “His itchy areas are now healing and are no longer raw. “Both these horses are young and have at least 15 years of riding left in them. “To see improvements within two weeks has been great. "I love that Technyflex is all-natural, it's competition safe, and has great anti-inflammatory benefits. "An excellent product - not just for joints but for the whole system."

Getting prepared for foaling season There are many things to consider when preparing for your first foal to be born, one of which is a safe, suitable foaling area. Fencing, ground cover, paddock hazards and shelter are all very important. Foal fencing should reach right to the ground, be strong with no gaps or anything protruding that a foal can be injured on. Repair or replace any areas that a head or hoof can fit through, pay special attention to gateways. Beware of electric fencing, newborns do not have the agility to avoid electric fencing and can become entangled. Introducing a foal to electric fencing should be done under close supervision. Solid fencing lined with strong mesh or shadecloth is ideal. Water troughs and dams are another hazard, wobbly foals often drown in dams, bath tubs and water troughs. Safely and securely cover permanent troughs and tubs, fence off dams and provide water in multiple smaller narrow contain-

ers that a foal cannot fit into and can still drink from. Remove any fallen trees, farm equipment or debris to prevent leg injuries. Protection from rain, wind and sun is very important. Healthy foals are tough and can handle poor weather very well but they still need protection from the elements, especially extreme heat.
Good tree coverage, a shelter shed or lockable walk in, walk out stable are ideal. One of the biggest risks to foals at birth is bacterial infections. If your mare is foaling outside, make sure you have a well rested, grassy paddock or yard. If you’re in drought or flood, have bales of clean rodent free straw ready to spread out as ground cover during foaling,
(only if your mare is unstressed by you being close by). This will reduce the amount of bacteria your foal is exposed to. If you’re foaling down in a stable, make sure it is large enough for your mare to easily move around. Thoroughly clean it with an industrial strength non harmful detergent and keep bedding fresh and clean. The same applies for paddock shelters. Lastly keep dogs and other animals, especially pigs and poultry , well away and even other horses if unsure on how they will react to a newborn foal. Some horses can become very aggressive and kill or steal foals especially when restricted to smaller paddocks, they can also fight through fences and the foals can become injured in the process. Have the paddock prepared in plenty of time before the mare’s due date as not all mares go full term and you don’t want to get caught unprepared. Good luck and happy foaling from the team at FoalGuard

Planing to breed your mare and her foaling date
If you are wanting your foal to be born in early August, you need to breed your mare in the last week of August or the first few weeks in September. Mares are termed “seasonally polyoestrus” which means that they have a well-defined breeding season with multiple heat (oestrus) cycles, as well as a nonbreeding season, or anoestrus, during winter when daylight hours are shortest. Each cycle, or oestrus, lasts an average of 21 days; though in the height of summer the cycle can shorten to 18 days. During each oestrus cycle, the mare will be unreceptive for 16 days (known as dioestrus), and then accept the stallion for the last 4-5 days. This is when she is “on heat”. Ovulation occurs approximately 24 hours before the end of the oestrus cycle. This is the best time to breed the mare either by natural cover or artificial insemination techniques. Veterinarians can check the mare’s ovaries with an ultrasound scan to determine when she is likely to ovulate, and therefore improve the chance of

Do your homework on horse nutrition By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist Š2018
Horses not getting adequate feed or pasture may need some supplementation. sumption). Many other ingredients used in these supplements are industrial and technical grade, so my advice is always check the quality of ingredients and choose only oral grade, after all don't our horses deserve the best? Like any other substance your horse ingests, supplements should be treated with respect, so it is important to be aware that they have the potential to do harm, as well as good. I believe it is necessary to regulate equine supplements in a similar way to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for humans, this would ensure quality every time. The APVMA does not accommodate the advancement in legitimate natural products like the TGA. The TGA, since the Pan Pharmaceuticals disaster (many years ago now), requires strict scientific data behind all ingredients used and cited on the TGA list. It's important to talk to your Equine Nutritionist, Herbalist or Veterinarian before making a choice and consider the horse's entire nutritional picture before you add a supplement to his or her diet. It's equally important to feed a supplement according to the product directions and for the length of time specified before you make up your mind as to its benefits or lack thereof. Remember that products made with inferior ingredients, quality control, or labelling might not impart any benefit, and any perceived benefit from a supplement is anecdotal evidence

What is in your feed room currently, are there containers of various herbal concoctions, vitamin supplements etc. Supplements have become much more a part of general health care these days, very different to how it was many years ago when horses were just fed oats and hay. It is well worth considering; does your horse really need a supplement and if he or she does then is it the right one? The most endearing feature of supplements is the flexibility of being used in many ways. Supplements can be beneficial with horses that suffer from joint issues, pain and muscle soreness etc. They can also be used for nervous horses to assist with tenseness, they can be used to assist with weight or help with hormonal imbalances. Certainly, they do have their uses and in my profession as an Equine Nutritionist and Medical Herbalist results can be very exciting, but my concern as always is the health of the horse. As horse owners, many of us take supplements every day but in many cases do not know why they are taking them? There is no doubt that from a scientific point of view certain types of supplements can be enormously beneficial. If a horse is fed a well-balanced diet, does the horse require a daily supplement? The answer is probably yes. Over recent years, research in Australia and overseas has provided more accurate guidelines on the nutritional requirements of horses and how they alter in relation to growth, exercise or reproductive requirement. Analysis of feeds gathered from different localities and climates, has proven that there are low or inadequate levels of certain nutrients, which can affect the health and performance of a horse. In some cases, individual nutrients provided in non-regulated feeds are imbalanced or in excess of needs and, if not corrected, can be detrimental to a horse's well being. Important note: Older horses not working with access to excellent quality pasture may obtain an adequate intake of major nutrients, minerals and vitamins to meet their needs, but more often than not they may still require some form of supplementation. Important note: Research has proven that soils in Australia that have been constantly producing feed, whether it be hays or grain, have depleted nutrient levels in the soil, leaving produce grown in these areas sadly deficient in many important vitamins and minerals. The salinity level has also risen, and the overuse of pesticides has also contributed to nutrient deficient soils, plus the big one, global warming and its effects on climate change. Is there a risk of over-supplementing? There are many nutritional supplements on the market for horses; the vast majority contain simple minerals (not fit for human consumption), which are poorly absorbed and utilised by the horse and then are required at high levels to provide some support. Many supplements also contain vitamins, which are feed grade (not fit for human con-
(not necessarily something backed up by peerreviewed studies). Many supplements contain oils and fats and in 70-85% of all cases there will always be an improvement in coat condition. If it is simply a shiny coat horse owners are wanting then purchasing some cold pressed sunflower, flax or soy oil may well be all you need to do, but don't forget that this will not provide your horse with the full amount of vitamins and minerals he or she may require. I feel that products using ingredients that have solid published human data behind them gives the horse owner reassurance that the product they are using will deliver results. I think it is also the responsibility of companies producing supplements to provide a certificate of analysis, specifications and science behind their products. It is also their responsibility to provide details of the form of minerals etc and source. If there is a statement made such as 'organic vitamin and mineral supplement' or 'only organic herbs used' then this needs to be backed up, because being realistic it is expensive to locate organic products that have been through stringent testing to achieve certification. Having been a product formulator for over 29 years I am very used to the lengths one must go to find and secure organic and genuine natural ingredients. I am very fortunate to have developed long term relationships with suppliers, so quality is always guaranteed. Too many inferior ingredients are used and there are also not sufficient regulations to police this. Too many products only contain a small level of actives, what else is contained in these products? Example of an extremely well know and used brand A: Magnesium (as amino acid/protein chelate and oxide) 90g/kg, dl-.alpha.Tocopheryl acetate 30,000IU/kg, dl-.alpha.Tocopheryl adsorbate 30,000IU/kg and Thiamine hydrochloride 6.66g/kg , the total is just under 149grams/kg, that's not even 15%!. So, what else is contained in this product, the MSDS states 'Blend of vitamins and minerals in a suitable carrier'? I have always believed that 'if it is fit for human consumption, then it is good enough for our horses too'. The fact that a horse is an animal does not mean there is a licence to feed them a poor, possibly harmful ingredient, or worse a product that is ineffective. For further advice on choosing the right supplement, understanding how to read a label or any advice on equine nutrition, please contact k Antoinette Foster by email antoinette@hiform.com.au or phone 03 97756422, all advice is free.

ing its formation, the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. “This means that as the Earth takes it annual trip around the Sun, different areas of the planet face the Sun more directly during their daylight hours at different times of the year “The tilt also affects the daily amount of light - without it the whole planet would have 12hour days and nights every day of the year.” Australia has summer at the end of the year when the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun. In summer, days are longer because more hours are spent facing the Sun. And they're hotter because we're facing the Sun more head-on - so we get hit by more rays of sunlight than if we were on an angle. The summer solstice in Australia - about December 22 - is when we have our longest day of the year. On this day the Sun is as far south in the sky as it gets - it passes directly above the Tropic of Capricorn, roughly over Rockhampton. In spring and autumn the planet isn't tilted towards or away from the Sun - it's roughly side-on. And for two days each year the Earth's tilt is exactly side-on to the Sun. The two days are called equinoxes (equal nights), and they fall in the middle of spring and autumn, usually on September 22 and March 22. On an equinox, night and day are equal length everywhere on the planet. Now spring and autumn only happen in mid-latitude areas of

Well horse owners, what is undoubtedly THE most significant day in the life of the horse's year has come and gone and I suspect most of you have not given its significance the slightest thought. (Ah, I suspect most of you thought August 1st as important to the horse as it is the horse's official birthday, even though very few are actually born on that day, but certainly my kids still go around and give each horse a parcel of carrots to mark the occasion!). Notwithstanding, almost all of you have been well aware of the day because of its significance to our own well being but for the horse, the day marks a critical milestone. I am talking about June 22nd, the shortest day of the year. We all note it because it signifies cold and miserable, (particularly if associated with westerly winds), conditions for us. The day is significant for the horse as it marks the critical element that controls the annual life cycle of the species. In our part of the world, we experience the classic four sea-
our planet. It's a different story in the tropics and at the frozen ends of the planet but we do not live there so need not explore that. So, hopefully we have established that there are four important seasonal days of the year. For simplicity, let us proclaim that they all occur on the 22nd day of the month, those months being December, March, June, and September, and these mark summer, autumn, winter, and spring. These seasons are very significant for the wild horse as the different seasons present very different environmental survival requisites, primarily in relation to the availability of feed, but also survival out in the wild where they do not have the benefit of air conditioning and heaters. Darwinian evolution has dictated that the horse has adapted physiologically for survival. Two aspects of this adaptation have become crucial to horse owners as our needs often dictate that we attempt to manipulate what nature has dictated These areas are breeding and hair coat. For the horse to survive out in the cold, he grows a long hair coat to provide insulation from the winter elements. For a foal to survive, it makes sense for it to be born at the time of the year when it is warm and summer rainfall has provided lush grass for nutrition. With a gestation period of 11 months, foals should be born in mid-late summer, therefore being mated November and December. continued page 23

The Horse Report
The Horse Report The pituitary and pineal glands are light responsive  from page 22 Does this interfere with what the horse owner wants. The busiest show/performance time of the year is usually autumn, winter and spring. Long hair is exactly what we do not want. As the official birthday is August 1st, foals born in January are already classified as sixmonths-old the day they are born. Innovatively, humans have devised ways to interfere and alter this natural phenomenon. The physiological cycles of the horse are all controlled by remarkable sensors in the pituitary and pineal glands situated at the base of the brain. These incredible sensors respond to light which is transferred to the brain via the eye, and instruct the pituitary and pineal gland to generate and secrete chemicals, (hormones), that enter the circulation and affect various receptors in other organs causing them in turn to also produce chemical regulators. Importantly, these organs include the adrenal glands, ovaries and testicles, and hair follicle causing them to regulate their respective functions. For hair coat, shortening lengths of daylight stimulate hair follicles to grow more hair, and lengthening daylight causes hair to shed. Reproductively, shortening days shut the organs down, lengthening days stimulate activity so that the stallion and mare become most fertile at the time of the year that fertilisation in the womb should produce a foal in
Longer daylight hours help with fertility
midsummer. Many mares will not come into season in winter and will only actively cycle as spring turns into summer. To alter this, we place the horses under lights to artificially control the environment and fool the horses into thinking the seasons are different. Performance and show horses are placed under lights in late summer, usually February/ March to stop hair growth and encourage shedding. Breeding animals are started in winter so that they think September is actually December and so can be bred to hopefully foal in August. Each situation is a little different and there are many protocols used by different people but the important fact is to understand the principles behind what we are doing and
implement to suit your best interests. As a rule, it will take about 60 days for the body to adapt to the change so timing can be worked out based on that. Ideally, the horse should have 16 hours of light each day to mimic the changes required and so depending on where you are, and the time of year, horses are placed in stables and timers are used to switch the lights on early in the morning, and late into the night, to achieve the desired length of "daylight" hours. Strength of light is obviously important and objectively electricians can prescribe lights that will deliver 10 candle-lights of power. Simplistically again, the rule of thumb is that the owner should be easily able to read a newspaper in the corner of the stall. It is unrealistic to be prescriptive for each and every situation. Hopefully owners can adopt a system, or certainly seek advice and help, to confidently achieve the desired outcome. I am not here to debate whether it is fair to the horse to manipulate, but would like to simply say that I have not seen any undesirable outcomes from these practices in 50 years in the horse industry. An application that is becoming more and more common these days is the situation where horses are transported from one hemisphere to another. This change in daylight length can occur in a matter of days, and I can say that I have seen many instances where horses have arrived in our area from other parts of the world and have taken an extremely long time to adapt.

The Way Of The Horse Challenge EQUITANA Melbourne is bringing back four All-Star trainers for this year's The Way Of The Horse (TWOTH) Challenge, the world famous horse starting competition, which will run from November 15-18 at the Melbourne Showgrounds. To celebrate the 20th year of EQUITANA in Australia, the world-famous horse-starting challenge will feature past champions, making this the ultimate horsemanship competition. This is one that’s not to be missed! The 2018 TWOTH Challenge will showcase the training techniques of four previous winners of the competition: Bruce O'Dell (2014), Ken Faulkner (2012), Adam Sutton (2010) and the first EQUITANA Auckland TWOTH winner, Tui Teka (2017). They will go headto-head across the four days of EQUITANA Melbourne, transforming four unhandled horses from wild to willing, in the hope of being crowned champion of champions. As an added twist, this year will see trainers work with Morgan Horses, thanks to the Mountain Creek Moriesians stud. This relatively uncommon breed of horse will offer a different challenge compared to the traditional Australian Stock Horses used in the past. During the Challenge, the four All-Star trainers will demonstrate their highly personal and specialised methods of connecting with an unbroken horse.
Ken Faulkner TWOTH winner 2013 This electrifying horsemanship contest is action-packed right from the start. After choosing their young, unhandled horse from a selection trucked directly from paddock to the venue, the four trainers work simultaneously in separate round pens, giving the public a unique opportunity to compare starting methods and training styles. Contestants will be judged by a respected panel of judges and the overall winner will be announced at the highly anticipated finale on Sunday evening of EQUITANA Melbourne. Tickets to Equitana Melbourne will be on sale from July. For more information visit www.equitana.com.au
Lifeskills program " HHH received its 3rd business award in Feb this year for " Youth and Family Services " It has been wonderful to see the program grow across different states and receive the great feedback from Youth services in relation to disengaged young people reengaging back into school or study. The program covers communication skills, body language, emotional regulation and personality education all being taught through professional horsemanship groundskills in small groups , not unlike mini horsemanship clinics! It is not Equine Therapy, it is a Lifeskills program to help prepare young people transition to a positive future. All students attend with their own case worker or counsellor, it is designed to open doors of communication for all those involved with the young people attending. Workbooks are provided to case workers so they can reinforce the techniques taught through the courses. Licensees all receive extensive training with Sue Spence and must have a high level of natural horsemanship ground skills, excellent communication skills and ideal facilities to present the program for their local communities. Media launches with each opening are also provided with many Youth Services booking as soon a new center opens. Licensees become an important well respected role model in their communities liaising with all youth and family services. The opportunity to present the program at a corporate level is also available. Please see the website www.horseshelpinghumansaustralia.com or email suespence101@gmail.com for further information. Manoeuvres made easy step by step By TANJA KRAUS
As we begin to progress in our training, we want to perform certain manoeuvres - these could be related to our discipline or simply a progression in our communication level and skill level with our horses. In either case, I often talk to people at my clinics, about what the manoeuvre they are trying to perform actually consists of, and how to break it down. Once we get chatting about it, I often discover that the rider hasn't put much thought into how many skills they are asking the horse to combine in order to perform the manoeuvre. Lets take the turn on the haunches for example. If we go and break down the turn on the haunches, bit by bit, how many skills are combining to perform this one manoeuvre. 1. We ask the horse to maintain collection. 2. We ask the horse to laterally flex in the direction of the turn. 3. We ask the horse to respond to the cue we have developed for the cue, so the horse understands what we are asking (for example we lay the rein on the neck). 4. We ask the horse to load his hindquarter, and either anchor the inside hind, the outside hind, switch between each hind, or continue stepping with each hind on the spot (depending on the requirements of the discipline, and the manoeuvre (spin or pirouette).
5. We ask the horse to reach with the leading / inside front leg, and step in front / cross with the outside front leg. 6. We ask the horse to continue this until we say stop, irrespective of fatigue or discomfort (mental self carriage). These are the basic components of a turn on the haunches / spin / pirouette. And yet I see riders asking their horse to perform this move, when the do not have an established cue. Or when they don't have control or an open line of communication of the individual parts of the horse that are being spoken to in this move - mouth, neck, hindquarter, and yet they want to talk to all of these parts as part of one complete move. If we are wanting to perform specific manoeuvres on our horses then we have a responsibility to ensure that we have control of or communication lines with our horses individual body parts required for that manoeuvre. If you are unable to ask for the horse to 'load' his hindquarter on its own, how can you expect that he can do it when being asked to do other things ? If you are teaching a child his numbers, you aren't teaching him maths at the same time, you do one, and then the other. Each move that we teach our horse is built by combining multiple singular moves together.
If you are wanting to teach your horse something, take the time to think about what goes into it, and if you have the ability to ask for each piece individually, and then combine.
