Hendra Virus risk is higher in winter North Coast Local Land Services is urging horse owners to be aware that winter 2020 may provide high-risk conditions for Hendra Virus cases in horses after the virus was confirmed in an unvaccinated horse on a NSW property south of Murwillumbah in May. BatOneHealth (batonehealth.org) is a global team of experts who have been studying the complex interactions between climate, land use, flying fox ecology, Hendra Virus dynamics and the concurrent risk to horses and humans. North Coast Local Land Services staff have worked with and supported this group since its inception. This group has recently advised that Winter 2020 represents a period of heightened risk for Hendra Virus spill over into horse populations. General Manager at North Coast Local Land Service, Louise Orr said, “The climatic and ecological conditions leading up to Winter 2011, were very similar. In 2011, North Coast Local Land Services staff and local private veterinarians worked with horses on nine affected properties. The largest numbers of horse cases on record." BatOneHealth’s prediction is for similar climatic conditions and the increased possibility of spillover events from flying foxes to horses this year. In recent weeks the first case for this year has occurred on the Far North Coast of NSW. June to October tends to be a higher risk for Hendra infection in horses, this could be because in winter feed sources are limited and flying foxes may risk feeding on lower branches, placing them in closer to horses. Hendra Virus is a virus carried by flying foxes (who are unaffected by the virus) and can be deadly to both humans and

Page 2

Vaccination remains the single most effective means of protecting horses and their owners against Hendra Virus.

horses. It is transmitted from flying fox to horse, via the ingestion by the horse of flying fox bodily fluids most likely dropped from overhead trees contaminating pasture, feed, water troughs etc. The infection has occasionally been passed onto people who have been in close contact with an infected horse. To protect both your horses and you, it is recommended that measures are taken to reducing the risk at the flying fox - horse interface. Horse owners should provide shelter or stables for horses at night, keep feed and water containers covered and not placed under trees where they could be contaminated from above.

However, vaccination of horses is the single most effective means to empower horse owners to protect both their horses and themselves against Hendra virus infection. Further information is available from NSW DPI ttps://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/animals-andlivestock/horses/health-and-disease/hendra-virus and NSW Health https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious /diseases/Pages/hendra.aspx , For more information about vaccinating your horse against Hendra virus, please contact your North Coast Local Land Services District Veterinarian on 1300 795 299 or your local vet.

The equine pre purchase assesments By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

The age, experience and confidence of the rider are important factors when selecting a horse

At the outset, I would like to categorically state that the two most common problems that purchasers discover with their new horse are lameness and

behaviour. Both of these problems are an absolute disaster as far as the future usefulness of the horse is concerned. Cynically, I would also possibly venture to say that poor behaviour is one of the more common reasons that vendors list a horse for sale. Obviously there are many other factors to consider as to the suitability and "soundness" of the horse but these would be two of the more common encountered. Soundness as such is a very poor term for an assessment of the horse as a horse that is useless for one particular form of equestrian activity may well be perfectly okay for something else and so the phrase "suitability for the intended use" is a more correct way of describing outcomes. Similarly "passing" or "failing" a veterinary examination is poor terminology. The decision to acquire or purchase ultimately has to be seen as a business decision made by the purchaser after due consideration of all the facts and information involved. One final point I would like to make at this stage is in relation to the purchase cost of the horse. Horses are extremely expensive items to own and it costs the same to look after a horse with a problem as it does for the perfect horse and so a little time and expense before committing to ownership can often be a good investment. - m The key consideration is match-

Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse

One of the most common services we perform in our practice is the pre purchase examination of the horse. This is such a critical decision for the potential new owner that it is worth while elaborating on the process that should be followed. The actual veterinary inspection should really be the last point in the chain of decision making. The veterinarian, however, can offer a lot more help to the new owner as an experienced equine veterinary surgeon will probably have been involved in the purchase of more individual horses than anyone else. Instructors are also a valuable source of advice as well as any other acquaintances with an equine background that you can source. Prospective owners should consult their "advisory team" long before any emotional attachment has been made. Many times I have been called to look at a horse that has some obvious problems that the owners tend to ignore because they "have fallen in love with the horse".

ing the horse, the rider, and the intended use for the animal. This really is an exercise in logic and should be the first step in the process. The age, experience, confidence, and horsemanship of the rider are the most important factors in the equation. Obviously a mature, experienced and confident horseperson is going to be able to cope with a much more boisterous horse than a young timid first horse person. Having ridden one or two horses successfully for a couple of years is no background for a rider to take on a green or unschooled horse. To become adept and capable of coping with behavioural and training problems in any horse requires years of experience, and more importantly, experience with large numbers of different animals. The miss-match in this area is the primary reason many new combinations are unsuccessful and it is foolish to "kid" oneself as to your ability to cope with anything and take on a horse that has "issues". An experienced advisor will emphasise this at the outset and provide guidance as to whether is worthwhile progressing on with the examination. One of the most common mistakes made is matching a young horse with a young rider. This is rarely a successful combination. continued page 7

The Horse Report

Selecting the right horse for you  from page 6 I personally believe that it is also a fallacy to hold off purchasing a horse because you are waiting for one that is capable of "going all the way" to the highest level. The reality is that not many riders have the time and commitment necessary to become an elite competitor in horse sports and probably more importantly, the rider is still not at the level necessary to compete at the highest level. It is far more important to actually acquire a horse and get out there competing, gaining invaluable experience, and progressively working yourself up the competition ladder. If your present horse is not quite good enough, then, if he is well schooled and performing, it is easy enough to pass him on and obtain another horse to progress to the next level. Therefore it is often better for the new owner to settle for a horse of a little less potential than to wait for the "super" horse. Herein lies the key to success and it sets up a little "food chain" process where there is a constant turnover of horses from riders looking to upgrade their own circumstances. This is easily the best place to begin looking for a new horse as most of these "cast offs" are more than suitable for the less experienced rider and so providing the step in the chain up the ladder. Be especially wary of the horse that has not been in work for several months. Usually this indicates a problem of some sort, often that the horse is difficult to handle and riding him is not a pleasant experience. At best, you can probably presume that this horse is not going to be one of the better competitors, otherwise he would not be languishing in a paddock.

Purchase a horse that suits your capability

There is no better warranty for a horse than his performance record for the previous six months. If he has been out there regularly competing, then it can be a fair presumption that the horse is "sound" for what he has been doing and there is a better than reasonable possibility that he will continue to perform in the same manner. Temperament and schooling are the two most important factors in determining the value of a horse. Horses that have been "training" at "advanced" but are still in actual fact competing at "novice" are situations to be wary of. You pay for what the horse has actually done, not what hearsay says he is capable of. The actual "suitability" then depends on the discipline in which you wish to compete and so again, it is better to look for a horse that is actually competing in your particular area. Lameness is the other problem that can render a horse useless.

Obviously a horse that is lame at examination is not suitable for purchase, NO MATTER WHAT the explanation is, do not proceed. However, many horses that have some sort of problem at one level are perfectly capable of

being very useful at another level. This is a very subjective assessment and you should consult a very experienced advisor before making a decision to proceed with this horse. For example, a horse with knee or tendon problems from racing will more than likely be perfectly suitable for slow speed equestrian. In some cases, a horse with an arthritic problem with a high profile rider may very often be okay for a junior. These all need careful assessment I have really only touched on the issues to be considered when looking to purchase a horse. Sufficient to say that consultation and advice and a systematic approach to planning the sort of horse you will look for are the starting points and you should not hesitate to talk with your chosen advisors, one of whom should be your veterinarian so that by the time you actually arrive at a point where the veterinary inspection is due, there should be a reasonable chance that the horse will indeed be suitable. I will continue this discussion in another issue in relation to the actual examination process.

Equine diets and feeding healthy hooves By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Farriers often recommend hoof supplements when they think your horse might be lacking the nutrients needed to grow good strong hoof wall. If you are already feeding a wellbalanced diet, doubling up on nutrients with a hoof supplement is unlikely to help. If your horse's diet doesn't provide enough nutrients then you do need to supplement but probably not with a hoof supplement. Why add a supplement just to feed feet when a well-balanced diet will provide everything a horse needs to grow healthy hooves? The added bonus of feeding correctly is that not only will hooves flourish, the diet also provides everything needed to keep the immune system, musculo-skeletal system, respiratory system healthy as well. If your horse's feet aren't as healthy as they should be, check the whole diet for correct balance rather than reaching for a quick solution of a hoof-food supplement. And remember that it takes around nine months for the hoof wall to grow from the coronet band to the weight-bearing surface so taking care of hoof health requires a long-term commitment. It is easy to see the impact of previous changes in nutrition or health status by looking at the 'growth rings' that occur in the hoof wall. Hooves, hair and skin are made from a very strong protein called keratin which comes in hard or soft forms depending on the minerals and amino acids it contains. Keratin production requires the horse to have eaten enough of the right amino acids and to have absorbed adequate vitamins, minerals and fatty acids along with the energy (calories) required to convert these raw ingredients into the

Page 8

Right: The weak hoof has grown out showing the benefits of correct dietary balance. proteins that make hooves healthy and strong. HOW DO YOU FEED FOR HOOF HEALTH? All horses need roughage for gut health, which also provides most of the protein and energy they need to survive. Most diets need minerals added to top up the levels provided by forage to at least daily required minimum levels as well as to balance critical mineral ratios. Some horses need more energy (calories) added to the diet to sustain work loads, growth or maintenance. Some horses need extra protein added, especially for growing horses or those on very poor quality roughage such as straw or very mature tropical grass hays. Some diets also need supplementation with specific essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and threonine. Of these amino acids, methionine is most important for proper hoof

development. Horses also need small amounts of oils with balanced levels of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. QUALITY PROTEIN The diet must supply enough proteins with a good balance of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. For adult horses, the total level of protein necessary is easily provided by the roughage they consume, but it is important to check that the levels of the most commonly limiting amino acids are also present. Generally lysine, threonine and methionine are those that are most frequently limiting in a poor quality diet. Full fat soybean meal and lucerne contain these frequently limiting amino acids and these feeds are often the easiest way to supplement them in a balanced diet. MINERALS Good nutrition supports your horse to grow the best hoof tissue

he or she is genetically programmed to grow. Zinc, copper, sulphur and selenium are microminerals or trace elements necessary for healthy skin, hair and hooves. Scientific research has shown that the horn from hooves containing lower zinc concentrations are not as hard and strong as those with higher levels of zinc. Zinc is used in more than 100 enzymes in the body responsible for a large number of cell functions. These functions include energy metabolism, cell division and keratinization (the growth of hair and hooves). Copper forms an important part of numerous enzymes in the body, including some responsible for connective tissue formation, pigmentation of coat colour, cell respiration and anti-oxidant functions. A balance diet is crucial to well-being  Continued from page 8 Selenium also plays a role in keratin synthesis for hoof and hair production. The concentration of sulphur in keratin is higher than in any other tissue in the body due to the levels of sulphur-rich amino acids such as methionine. Having the correct levels of copper and zinc and the correct ratios between them are necessary to allow the body to make healthy hooves. The levels of copper and zinc also need to be balanced in relation to iron and manganese. Since grass and hay are high in iron, if you add any more iron to the diet it becomes almost impossible to balance the copper and zinc so choose a mineral supplement with no added iron. Selenium levels must also be carefully balanced between the relatively narrow margins of required daily minimum amounts, and toxicity levels. Sulphur deficiency rarely occurs when horses are fed an adequate daily intake of average quality that meets their daily protein requirements. VITAMINS The B-group vitamins B7 (biotin) and B6 (pyridoxine) work together to produce keratin which is important for hoof and hair health. Horses at pasture and leading a life free from stress, illness or hard work will generally produce enough B-group vitamins in conjunction with their gut microbial population. Hard-working, stressed or ill horses may need supplemental vitamin B to meet needs. Biotin supplementation at levels of 15 - 20 mg/day for a 500 kg horse has been demonstrated to improve hoof hardness when compared to diets low in biotin. In one study, diets with very high levels of biotin supplementation

A correctly balanced diet will result in an improvement in the horse’s appearance - hooves, mane and tail and a general improvement in the horse’s overall well-being. Make the most of feeding with a natural diet Blog by VICTORIA FERGUSON* South Australian show horse rider Brianna Duncan and her mother Sue are proud of their magnificent Warmblood gelding Felix (Heathmont Forever After). The picture (right) was taken recently at 3 ½ years of age. Brianna writes, "Felix arrived at our property in June 2017 when he was about seven months old. As soon as he arrived he was put on a natural diet formulated by Victoria for a young growing warmblood. “All our horses are on the VF Natural Diet including my show horse Deevie (Double TT De-Vita) who we have also owned since a weanling. “They are all an absolute picture of health with great body condition, beautiful shiny coats and lovely dispositions. “We have had all our horses on Victoria's diet and for nine years have been guided by her for any health issues with them. "I have really mainly focused in showing in the past with my horses but am looking forward to hitting the dressage arena with Felix, I have recently started training with a dressage instructor to help prepare us for the young dressage horse classes. “We have had some very positive comments about Felix and look forward to his future. “He has grown into a magnificent horse."

Feeding from an equine dentistry perspective By SAMANTHA GUNTER Equine Dentist We all know what it's like when a trend sweeps the horse world. While many of these trends become popular because they are new and improved ways of horse care, a few slip through the net. Recently I've seen many posts on social media advising owners to feed their horses up high to build topline and help with skeletal alignment. From an equine dentistry point of view this is very worrying. In the modern equine world, it is hard to mimic how horses live in the wild. But it is important if we want to maintain happy, healthy horses that we try to replicate their natural habits as closely as possible. This means, among others, providing adequate fibre and forage, allowing herd dynamics, and mimicking their natural movements. Horses are designed to eat with their heads to the ground 90% of the time. They graze up to 20 hours a Page 14

When teeth don’t wear evenly dental malocclusions occur

day if forage is available and majority of their intake comes from grass. This is how their bodies have evolved and how they are naturally designed. The horse's jaw is designed to grind most effectively low to the ground. The jaws move together in a circular motion, with the lower jaw extending beyond the upper jaw during this movement. When a horse is using its jaw correctly, it is able to masticate rough fibres effectively and wear teeth as evenly as possible. Feeding a horse higher than this natural position can result

The horse's jaw is designed to grind most effectively low to the ground

in a multitude of future problems. Not only does colic and choke become a risk if a horse isn't chewing their food effectively, but the cheek teeth will not wear as they are supposed to and dental malocclusions can be created. Without this full circular motion of the jaw, extensions on the first upper molars and the back lower molars may start to form over time. These can be painful for your horse and further limit the jaw's movement, which can then lead to skeletal problems in the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). This domino effect will not

only cause your horse pain and you money, but it can lead to the early development of arthritis and major molar malocclusions that can often result if not addressed early. Wherever possible, refer to the wild horses for your own horse care. While horses occasionally reach for fodder up in the trees, this is rare. They are designed to graze, heads well below wither level and jaws in alignment. If we can mimic this natural position as closely as possible, we will save ourselves a number of problems and have comfortable, healthy horses to boot!

Low starch diet for your horses By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist and ERIN ROMANIN Clinical Nutritionist. ©Hi Form Australia

The question is often asked “should my horse be on a low starch and low sugar diet?” In the case of a low carbohydrate diet it is important for horses to receive the correct type of carbohydrates to support their body, health, and well-being. A low starch/ low sugar diet is not for all horses and it depends entirely on the type of work the horses perform and if they have existing health conditions or naturally carry their weight very easily. When we talk about restricting carbohydrates for humans, it generally means digestible sugars, soluble fibres and starch, however horses really rely on carbohydrates as an essential part of their diet especially soluble and insoluble fibres. There are two categories of carbohydrates found in pasture and hay non-structural and structural carbohydrates. Non-structural carbohydrates or NSC found in roughage are termed as simple sugars and fructans and horses can easily digest and ferment these.. Sugars are building blocks for plant growth and all grasses produce sugar during the daylight hours and they use carbon dioxide water and energy via photosynthesis from the sun. These sugars which are produced during the day are then turned into fibre to support the cell walls and energy and various other life processes. Therefore, it is logical to think that the best time for horses prone to conditions such as laminitis, to graze on pasture is early in the morning. Up until more recently not a great deal of attention has been paid to the sugar content in pasture and hays, but we must be aware of the dangers of high sugar in grasses with horses in particular who are prone to laminitis. It is not just spring where we need to be concerned about grasses it is also winter whereby, we have had a considerable amount of rain and then have some warm days to follow. It is not as drastic as spring grass, but it can have an impact. Horses that really cannot tolerate high sugars and are prone to laminitis should be restricted as far as grazing time is concerned. At the same time, these horses must receive a good level of roughage so Page 16

It is important that horses receive the correct dietary needs

feeding a low sugar and low starch hay, such as teff would be quite useful in these cases. The risk can be reduced with horses who are prone to laminitis by turning them out early in the morning when sugar levels are generally lower. However, to make it more confusing sugar content could possibly be high in the morning if the grass has undergone a degree of stress overnight. This means if there is a frost overnight, the sugar level may still be high in the morning, so just be mindful of this. Many processed and pelletised readymade feeds contain carbohydrates which includes simple sugars and starch. Quite a few grains do contain a high level of NSC these include corn, oats, and seeds. Starches are long chains of sugar molecules. Sugars are broken down through the digestive process and glucose is readily absorbed by the horse. Through a process called hydrolysis most horses will be able to digests and absorbs sugars and starches in the small intestines. The pancreas is then activated by glucose in the blood stream to release insulin, these glucose molecules are then stored as

glycogen in the cells. If the starch content is too high sometimes starch can make its way into the caecum, this is the first part of the hindgut and it is rapidly fermented. Lactic acid is a by-product of this fermentation process and it lowers the pH level in the hindgut which kills the good bacteria that live there. Endotoxins can be released and can contribute to conditions such as colic and laminitis. Starch levels of natural feeds suited to horses Feed Ingredient Starch % Legume hay (besides alfalfa) 1.56 Grass Hay 1.65 Oaten Hay 4.03 Grass Pasture 2.08 Barley 47.50 Oats, Dried 43.96 Alfalfa (Lucerne) Hay 0.8 There is no actual way to describe what is considered as a low starch diet, carbohydrates will include sugars, starches and some roughage so therefore it is not advisable to describe the horses diet as a low carbohydrate diet as we know carbohydrates are essential for all living animals. continued page 17

Look for feeds that meet your horse’s needs  From page 16

Clearly if we were to name a low starch diet as a low carbohydrate diet it would also mean that we would need to lessen the amount of roughage being fed to the horse and this would be extremely unhealthy. It is very important to ensure that we discuss all aspects of what is considered a low starch and a low sugar feed regime for horses. The term, low starch, on a feed label generally refers to the percentage of starch contained in the bag. Low starch generally sits between 10 and 12% or under. There is a recommendation for horses that have EMS which suggests that the diet should not be low in non-structural carbohydrates. NSC means starch and all watersoluble carbohydrates such as sugar and fructans. Many of the processed and pelletised commercial feeds can be quite high in starch and it is interesting to note that many of these feeds do not list the percent of starch or non-structural carbohydrates on the bag. Many of these feeds tend to be quite high in starch - some are what we would term as a medium level which will be somewhere between 20 and 25% but a low starch diet must be generally less than 12% When you are making a selection on the type of feed that you wish to use with your horse, look for feeds that do contain what we term as natural ingredients, this means suited to the species. Put simply, what horses have evolved to consume to support a healthy gut microbiome. As horse owners, we need to ask more questions of feed merchants and feed companies to provide detailed information on what is contained in the feed. Does my horse need a low starch low sugar diet? It may be essential for some horses that have EMS or are prone to laminitis for example to be fed a low starch diet as this will maintain the blood glucose levels.

Horse owners need to ask feed merchants and feed companies to provide detailed information on what is contained in the feed.

There will be variations in how you manage these types of horses due to age, current health, body condition and fitness. Horses who are termed as obese will require a reduction in overall calories and this means not just starches. Hays such as teff are a good option providing it is good quality as it is generally very low in sugar and starch. It may be necessary to supplement with a good nutritional balancer or vitamin and mineral supplement to ensure that the horses daily nutritional requirements are met. Horses who have insulin dysregulation or ID have an increased risk of laminitis as insulin in these horses is not effective in carrying glucose to the cells from the bloodstream, hence both remain at a higher level. These types of horses are highly sensitive to starches and benefit from a very low starch soluble carbohydrate diet. On the other hand, PSSM horses or polysaccharide storage myopathy, which is a muscle disorder tend to have a normal glucose/insulin metabolism. These horses are unable to use the glucose stored in their cells as energy and are more prone to tying up. Laminitis is one of the most common conditions in horses, these horses require a diet that is low in soluble carbohydrates

and starch. High levels of starch can increase hindgut acidosis killing the good microbes. Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction or PPID (Cushing's) generally affects horses over the age of 15. These horses require a low starch diet, this condition develops when neurons in the hypothalamus gland worsen and fail to regulate the pituitary glands par intermedia. Some of these cases also have ID. These horses are sometimes low in weight and therefore require calories added so the diet must be adjusted accordingly. Ulcers are quite common in horses; particularly gastric ulcers and a low starch diet can be quite beneficial in these cases. Supplying plenty of roughage to these types of horses increases the enzymatic action and production of saliva has the potential to reduce acidity. Often horses who have ulcers show signs of irritability, poor performance and sometimes colic symptoms. It is well documented that a high roughage diet supports the gut microbiome and the digestive system. Alfalfa has proven very beneficial in these cases by acting as a hindgut buffer. This helps reduce acidosis. Researchers have also found that horses who tend to be nervous may benefit from a diet that is a little lower in starch but always remember roughage is the key to a healthy horse. Horses with the above conditions will certainly benefit from a low starch diet, but if your horse does fit into any of these categories, then it is not likely that he or she will require a diet that is low in starch. Performance horses benefit from carbohydrates that are readily available particularly horses that are performing short bursts of high intensity training such as racehorses. By not providing sufficient fuel, performance horses will not be able to maintain the energy required of them. If glycogen in the muscles are low horses will not be able to conserve the glycogen. Horses who have a good body score, are healthy and their fitness is at the required level for the work there would be no need to feed a low starch diet. These horses need plenty of fuel to support the workload. If you have a horse that is difficult to maintain weight increasing the amount of roughage and fat component may well be of benefit. As is the case with all changes in feed it is important to make sure you do so on a gradual basis. I tend to suggest a minimum of five to seven days. Making a change quickly can upset the gut microbiome and create issues which could lead to complications with health. Things to consider when breeding your mare There are two general ways to "cover" or breed the mare: Live cover: the mare is brought to the stallion's residence and is covered "live" in the breeding shed. She may also be turned out in a pasture with the stallion for several days to breed naturally ('pasture bred'). The former situation is often preferred, as it provides a more controlled environment, allowing the breeder to ensure that the mare was covered and places the handlers in a position to remove the horses from one another should one attempt to kick or bite the other. Artificial Insemination (AI): the mare is inseminated by a veterinarian or an equine reproduction manager, using either fresh, cooled or frozen semen. It is considered safe to breed a mare to a stallion of much larger size. Because of the mare’s type of placenta and its attachment and blood supply, the foal will be limited in its growth within the uterus to the size of the mare's uterus but will grow to its genetic potential after it is born. Test breedings have been done with draft horse stallions bred to small mares with no increase in the number of difficult births. When breeding live cover, the mare is usually boarded at the stud. She may be "teased" several times with a stallion that will not breed to her, usually with the stallion being presented to the mare over a barrier. Her reaction to the teaser, whether hostile or passive, is noted. A mare that is in heat will generally tolerate a teaser (although this is not always the case), and may present herself to him, holding her tail to the side. A veterinarian may also determine if the mare is ready to be bred, by ultrasound

or palpating daily to determine if ovulation has occurred. Live cover can also be done in liberty on a paddock or on pasture, although due to safety and efficiency concerns, it is not common at professional breeding farms. When it has been determined that the mare is ready, both the mare and intended stud will be cleaned. The mare will then be presented to the stallion, usually with one handler controlling the mare and one or more handlers in charge of the stallion. Multiple handlers are preferred, as the mare and stallion can be easily separated should there be any trouble. Artificial insemination (AI) has several advantages over live cover and has a very similar conception rate. The mare and stallion never have to come in contact with each other, which therefore reduces breeding accidents, such as the mare

kicking the stallion. AI opens up the world to international breeding. A mare also does not have to travel to the stallion, so the process is less stressful on her and if she already has a foal, the foal does not have to travel. AI allows more mares to be bred from one stallion, as the ejaculate may be split between mares. AI reduces the chance of spreading sexually transmitted diseases between mare and stallion. AI allows mares or stallions with health issues, such as sore hocks which may prevent a stallion from mounting, to continue to breed. Frozen semen may be stored and used to breed mares even after the stallion is dead. However, the semen of some stallions does not freeze well. Some breed registries may not permit the registration of foals resulting from the use of frozen semen after the stallion's death, although other large registries accept such usage and provide registrations. The overall trend is toward permitting use of frozen semen after the death of the stallion. A stallion is usually trained to mount a phantom (or dummy) mare, although a live mare may be used, and he is most commonly collected using an artificial vagina (AV) which is heated to simulate the vagina of the mare. The AV has a filter and collection area at one end to capture the semen, which can then be processed in a lab. The semen may be chilled or frozen and shipped to the mare owner or used to breed mares "on-farm". When the mare is in heat, the person inseminating introduces the semen directly into her uterus using a syringe and pipette.

Feeding the pregnant mare By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS Pregnant mares carry your hopes and dreams, be it for the next big champion or just a quiet riding companion. Regardless of what you are breeding, good care of the mare during her various stages of pregnancy has long term impacts on both her and her foal’s long term health and athletic capacity. Here are some tips for feeding pregnant mares to keep them healthy and breeding sound, strong and athletic foals: 1. DON’T LET MARES GET FAT Mares in their early stages of pregnancy don’t need many, if any additional calories than they needed when they weren’t in foal. All mares are different, so to really know how much feed your pregnant mares need you should condition score regularly. Pregnant mares should ideally be maintained at a condition score of six and should not be allowed to exceed a score of seven. Having mares too fat can: - Reduce their milk production when they foal. - Put unnecessary strain on their hooves and joints, making them heavy and uncomfortable. - Lead to difficulty foaling (though this isn’t necessarily proven to occur). - Make it difficult to fall pregnant again, particularly if a mare is forced to lose weight just prior to or immediately following foaling. As mares progress through their pregnancy their requirement for energy and protein does increase, so you may find you need to feed additional

Good nutrition helps keep your mare at her peek.

feed to maintain their body condition score. For more information on Condition Scoring read our FeedXL Newsletter #1. If you are feeding pregnant mares, get in the habit of running your hands over them every time you feed them. Doing this means you will quickly pick up if they are putting on more condition than they need and will allow you to adjust their feed intake accordingly. 2. DON’T LET MARES GET SKINNY A pregnant mare shouldn’t be allowed to drop below a condition score of five. Mares that are any lighter will fall away quickly after foaling, reducing the body energy and protein reserves for milk production and also switching off the reproductive cycles, making it difficult or impossible to get in foal again. Thin mares may also be more susceptible to disease. Again, get in the habit of running your hands over your mares to assess whether they

need more feed to hold them in the desired body condition. If you notice their ribs becoming easier to feel or their topline and rump starting to fall away, you will need to increase the amount of feed they are getting. Because so much room is taken up in the mare’s abdomen late in the pregnancy you will likely need to feed high energy grains (make sure they are cooked—see FeedXL Newsletter #18) or high energy fibre feeds that use ingredients like sugarbeet pulp or soybean hulls to allow them to increase their energy intake enough to hold their body condition. High fat feeds are also useful for late pregnant mares. 3. MAKE SURE MINERAL AND VITAMIN REQUIREMENTS ARE MET Meeting the mineral and vitamin requirements of pregnant mares during early and late pregnancy is crucial to: - Promote the sound development of their foals. - Prevent deficiencies like iodine that can affect the

thriftiness and survival of newborn foals. - Prevent problems in the mares like retained placenta and the associated laminitis. - Maintain a strong immune system in the mare and foal. - Maintain the long-term health and soundness of the mare for future reproduction. While pregnant mares can often be maintained on good quality pasture with little additional feed, without supplementation of minerals, a pasture-only diet will almost certainly have quite dramatic deficiencies of copper and zinc and depending on the geographical location may also be very deficient in calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iodine and selenium. If the mare doesn’t receive the additional minerals she needs to support herself and her growing foetus she will draw them from her own body reserves. However if she is required to do this for many consecutive breeding seasons, it will eventually have implications for both her and her future foal's’ long-term health, soundness and athletic ability. One study has shown that foals born to mares early in her breeding career have less structural problems than foals born later in that mare’s life, which may indicate that over consecutive pregnancies, mares can run out of reserves of minerals that directly impact the sound development of her foals. FeedXL allows you to quickly and easily determine your mare’s requirements for these critical minerals as well as vitamins and helps you make sure the diet you are feeding is meeting her requirements. continued page 21

The mare’s mineral and vitamin needs From page 20 4. FEED HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN During pregnancy, a mare requires high quality protein to meet her own requirements and those of her growing foetus. If the pasture your mare is on is of low quality (for example sub-tropical C4 Type pastures, or pasture that has matured, gone to seed or browned off), add some high quality alfalfa/lucerne hay to raise the quality of protein in the forage component of her diet. If you are using supplementary feeds on lowquality pasture, select feeds that use legumes and oilseeds with quality protein, including soybean, lupins, faba/field beans and canola meal. Low quality protein sources like cottonseed meal shouldn’t be used for pregnant mares. FeedXL will help you make sure you are feeding enough good quality protein to your mares to produce healthy foals and will also stop you from overfeeding protein which will make your mare’s diet very expensive. 5. MAKE THE MOST OF PASTURE IF YOU HAVE IT Pasture is an excellent source of energy and protein. Feeding a diet that relies largely on

Pasture and hay is important in the mare’s diet.

pasture has two main positive effects. The first is it will make for an economical diet, with pasture being one of your cheapest feeds available. Secondly, a high fibre diet will keep your mare’s gastrointestinal tract healthy, reducing the risk of problems like colic . To really know what is in your pasture and what your mare needs in addition for her diet to be balanced, you should have your pasture tested for energy, protein and minerals levels.

Once you have had your pasture tested we can enter the results into your FeedXL account so you can see what is in and what is missing from your specific pasture. Then you only need to add what is missing from the mare’s diet. Equi-Analytical can run a full analysis starting at $26 US. It is well-worth the investment. If you rely on hay for your mare’s main source of forage this too can be tested and the results put into FeedXL.

SUMMARY Because it is so often said that a pregnant mare needs little more than a horse at maintenance, it is sometimes mistakenly thought that mares and particularly early pregnant mares can be fed diets of forage only with little or no supplementation. However while a pasture or good quality hay diet may be sufficient to maintain your mare’s bodyweight, it will almost certainly be lacking in critical nutrient including minerals that can determine if your foal is born structurally sound or not. Keeping mares in the correct body condition, making sure you meet mineral and vitamins requirements from day one of the pregnancy, feeding high quality protein and using pasture when you can will help you to breed sound foals that are healthy and full of life when born. It will also mean your mares can remain healthy and able to produce strong foals with good structural soundness year in, year out. Being pregnant may not appear to be hard work, but it will take a toll on your mare’s body if she is not properly cared for. For further information visit www.feedxl.com

Horses helping humans By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan. We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better. It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities. Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area. This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients. This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-

engagement back into school or study. Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with. The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level. (The program is based on professional horsemanship, self regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.) The License includes full business set up, extensive hands on individual training with me at HHH here on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council MP's and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support. Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included. It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

Your Dream Career Starts Here... ™

Become a licensee and facilitator of this internationally renowned horsemanship and life skills program with proven outcomes. It is specifically designed to assist disengaged and at risk youth.

The Horse Report

It is so easy to take things for granted By TANJA KRAUS This morning my coffee arrived with this love heart on top. I stuck my spoon in to stir it and stopped myself just in time. I paused, looked at the heart and took the time to appreciate that someone took the time to adorn my coffee with something. It is so easy to take things for granted on a day to day basis, whether it is simply to appreciate great weather, something in nature, or if it is taking the time to notice when someone has done something nice for you. Most days, I try to take the time to have a mental 'gratitude diary' before I get out of bed, and last thing before I go to sleep. It is basically a list of 10 things that I am grateful for, and I try to go through life with a 'stop and smell the roses' philosophy.

To take a moment to appreciate the small things - a pretty

coffee, the warmth of the sun, a clear blue sky.

It doesn't always happen - we all get 'busy' - too busy to 'be', too busy to 'see'. But, like with any practice, the more I do it, the easier it becomes. The more I notice, the more I appreciate it. And the more I see and appreciate, suddenly, the more blessed I feel and the 'easier' life becomes. Life doesn't really change - just my perspective has. And this spills over into my work with horses. The more I see in them to appreciate, the more there is to appreciate, and the 'better' they become. It's all about perspective. Are you going to 'stop and smell the flowers ' today ? Appreciate what you have, appreciate your horses and appreciate what you have achieved with them. Waiting for Hendra Virus results If your veterinarian considers your horse may have Hendra Virus, he/she will take samples for testing at a state government laboratory. Initial test results are usually available one to two working days later. Although only a few people have ever been infected with Hendra Virus, all of these people caught the infection from horses. So strict precautions must be taken when you are caring for your horses while waiting for Hendra Virus results. Various states have produced fact sheets on what precautions to take, how to reduce the risk of people becoming infected and what Personal Protective Equipment is needed. In NSW go to www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/factsheets In Queensland go to www. daf.qld.gov.au In Victoria go to www.agriculture.vic.gov.au In Western Australia go to www.agric.wa.gov.au While you are waiting for test results: • If possible, avoid going within five metres of the sick horse

Blood tests from suspected Hendra Virus infected horses can be analysed and initial results can be supplied in one to two working days.

until Hendra Virus has been ruled out. • Do not allow children or minors to be within five metres of the sick or dead horse or its body fluids or wastes. • If it is necessary to go within five metres of the sick or dead horse, keep the number of people having contact to a minimum • Move sick horses away from areas that can be accessed by the public. • Isolate the sick horse from other animals if it is safe to. Ideally, leave the sick horse where it is and move other ani-

mals to a different area of the property. • If you need to feed and water the sick horse keep your distance from them. • Notify your veterinarian immediately of any change in the health status of any horse on the property. Managing a carcass: If the horse under investigation dies or is euthanased, avoid contact with the carcass where possible. The owner or person in charge of the horse is responsible for the disposal of the carcass. Have a plan for the method of

disposal of the carcass e.g. deep burial on the property, burning on the property or transport to a disposal site. Restrict access to the carcass until it can be disposed of. Cover with a tarpaulin and tape off surrounding areas. Advise anyone disposing of the carcass that the horse is under investigation for Hendra Virus. Caring for other animals while waiting for Hendra results: Some other species of animals, such as dogs, cats and pigs are known to be susceptible to Hendra Virus infection. Continued page 33

The Horse Report

If you suspect your horse has Hendra From page 32 If they become infected with Hendra Virus they may pose a risk to humans. All pets should be locked up to prevent contact with the sick horse, its carcass or its body fluids and wastes. Always practise strict hygiene when handling any animal, especially those that may have had contact with the infected animal or its body fluids and wastes. Do not approach within five metres of a horse that may be infected with Hendra virus unless it is necessary. If you must closely approach a sick or dead horse and Hendra virus has not been ruled out, always take the following precautions: • Cover cuts and abrasions with a waterresistant dressing. • Put on all personal protective equipment (PPE) as outlined below. • After handling the horse, remove and decontaminate or dispose of the PPE carefully, making sure there is no contact with your face, particularly your eyes, mouth and nose. • Carefully remove any clothing contaminated with a sick horse’s body fluids. • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water and dry them or use hand wipes and waterless hand hygiene solution. If you have handled a sick horse, follow these steps before having contact with other horses: - Wash off any contamination with plenty of soap and water. - Shower and wash your hair. - Change your clothes and footwear. - Disinfect footwear and wash clothes in soapy water. - Arrange your activities so that you handle unaffected horses first and have contact with the sick horse last. Personal protective equipment: Personal protective equipment must be fitted and worn correctly. The following personal protective equipment is required if you need to be within five metres of a horse that may be infected with

Hendra virus: • P2 respiratory protection (mask). People who have beards require specialised respiratory protection provided by powered rebreathing units. • Rubber boots • Protective clothing e.g. disposable overalls with full head protection • Eye protection (non-vented goggles or included in respiratory protection) • Rubber gloves/double gloved. Human health concerns: If you have concerns about a person’s health at any time, seek medical advice. Contact your general practitioner, local hospital emergency department or local public health unit if you have concerns about possible exposure of people to a horse infected with Hendra Virus. In NSW calling 1300 066 055 will direct you to your local Public Health Unit. For updates go to www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/factsheets

The Hendra Virus symptoms in horses Hendra virus can cause a range of symptoms in horses. Usually there is a sudden fever and either respiratory or neurological illness and rapid death. In some cases the onset of illness is gradual . SYMPTOMS CAN INCLUDE: * laboured breathing * frothy &/or blood stained nasal discharge * a temperature (usually but not always higher than 40°C) * Neurological changes, including tilting of the head, loss of vision, abnormal muscle twitching, weakness and loss of balance * Colic like discomfort. Most cases in horses are fatal but occasionally a horse will survive the infection. The reported mortality rate in infected horses is greater than 70%.

The Hendra Virus symptoms in people If you have been in contact with an infected horse please seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms typically develop between five and 21 days after contact with an infectious horse. Fever, cough, sore throat, headache and tiredness are common initial symptoms. Meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) can then develop, causing headache, high fever, and drowsiness, convulsions and coma. Hendra virus infection can be fatal. Glamorvid Lucky Strike Price: $ 12,000. 11.3 hh Grey Gelding Reg: EA, SHC, RPSB Sire: Oakvale Serenade Dam: Bandeeka Cupid The difficult decision has been made to sell our lovely pony. Hokey was purchased for my then 6yo daughter as a leading rein pony-they then transitioned beautifully to riding independently and now all too quickly outgrown. Hokey has competed successfully at Grand National, National, Royal and Ag levels. This ripper little pony has proven his easy going temperament by carrying his rider around safely and also giving consistent workouts. He has easily qualified for Melb the last 3 years ridden solely by his little jockey and I can only assume that last season’s qualifications for 2020 will carry over to 2021 as a result of Covid 19. Hokey also enjoys Pony Club, jumping, swimming in the dam and riding around the farm. He isn't fazed by tractors, excavators, kangaroos, dogs, quad bikes or the kids kicking footballs over his head! He's happy to plod along or if the rider pushes him forward he can really move! A Mother's dream to do absolutely everything with and also perfectly trustworthy for little ones to handle independently-he's just so sweet. I'm very grateful to this pony as he's given my daughter the gift of joy and confidence. Only the best home is deserving of this special pony-sadly outgrown. Contact: Sonja Ph: 0427 851 401

Teddy was bred and broken in by myself and my partner, he is ridden regularly by an adult rider and has been no trouble. Price: $ 32,000. 15.2 hh Reg: EA and AWHA Bay Mare YOB: 2015 Sire: Don Dancier Dam: Avendal Royal Dance

DVP presents this stunning DON DANCIER 5yr old 15.2hh mare out of Avendal Royal Dance by Royal Hit, on behalf of its owner. Bred in the purple, Royal Roxstar is a super type with temperament and trainability combined. Roxy demonstrates wonderful correct paces with a great hind leg giving a big ride feel in a smaller package. She would be perfect for either the show ring with her exceptional looks and height putting her in the ‘small show hunter hack’ classes or into the dressage ring with her big movement. Roxy has had two outings in the hack ring in September 2019, with exceptional results. Winning Champion Warmblood (across all height categories), and 2 x champion Show Hunter Hack (ridden height classes). Super easy to handle, catch, float and trim. Roxy would be an asset to any stable!
