Hendra virus fears prompt cancellation of Aberdeen campdraft Fears that thousands of bats may be carrying the deadly hendra virus have forced the cancellation of a Hunter Valley campdraft event. Organisers of the Aberdeen Bushmen's Campdraft say the annual event was scheduled for the last weekend of May but could take place in September instead. Hendra has killed four people and 90 horses since it was discovered in Brisbane in 1994. Event secretary Scott Ryan said organisers will meet in four weeks to determine whether the bats have moved on. "We've got some bat problems up there at the moment, and they look like they're here to stay for a little while," he said. "Just with the hendra virus going around at the moment, more up in the Queensland area, but everyone's a bit worried about putting horses under bats. "You know, they get really sick and have to be put down, and it can also be passed on to vets or

anyone who has come into contact with a horse. "People can die from it as well, so it's pretty scary stuff." Mr Ryan said last month's super storm has been blamed for the bats moving into the area. "There's thousands of bats down there," he said. "Supposedly, they've come from the coast, but because of the recent cyclonic weather on the coast they've come up the Hunter Valley, is what we've been told. "It's down on the river bank, this local government property. "These bats are in all the trees where all the competitors will be camping." A Hunter Valley equine vet is urging Upper Hunter horse owners to make themselves aware of the health impacts flying foxes can have on them and their animals. Managing director of Scone Equine Hospital, Cameron Collins said horse owners should be cautious.

"What this serves to do is bring to people's attention the health hazards with being closely associated with flying foxes," he said. "That's a human health issue and it's an equine health issue. "So, in a situation like this, where the flying foxes are roosting in the trees around the river, we think it's best that people are aware that close contact with flying fox faeces, and any discharge from the flying fox, is a potential health hazard to humans and to horses." Mr Collins said horse owners should think about the benefits

of vaccination, given the current circumstances. "Flying foxes and horses and human health are all an issue together," he said. "There's the bat lyssavirus, which is a problem for humans directly between contact between the bats and humans. "There's also hendra virus, which is an issue between the bats and the horses, and then humans can be contaminated from the horses. "So, we think this is a timely opportunity to remind people that vaccination protects horses and it protects humans."

FLEXIBLE PLASTIC HORSE FENCING Bounce Back ® horse fence is a great fencing option if you are serious about protecting the well-being and value of your livestock. The Bounce Back ® system has been engineered to provide the optimum balance between equine safety and containment. Rails are highly visible and have no sharp edges. Low profile brackets complement its smooth appearance and enhance protective qualities. Unlike traditional fencing systems, this fence will flex and return against low to medium level collision. In the case of severe impacts, Bounce Back ® is designed to reduce danger to livestock by stretching and cushioning impact. Bounce Back ® horse fencing ensures a higher level of safety due to its’ flexible, plastic build. Horses are fast and strong animals, so a less forgiving horse fence can potentially increase your vet bills and injure your animals unnecessarily. This brand of horse fencing does not splinter either, and doesn’t have sharp edges or corners. For DIY installations and contractors Bounce Back ® provides a durable, aesthetically pleasing, easy to install, high quality solution to your horse fencing needs. Bounce Back ® is proudly 100% Australian owned, and has been manufactured in the company’s Western Sydney location for over 34 years. ON-SITE TRAILER BEARING REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT SERVICE With the show season well and truly in the swing of things, many competitors are making long journeys every weekend. It is important to check wheel bearings, suspension and brakes on a regular basis. Imagine having a bearing failure on the way to or home from an event. Usually most competitors travel on freeways - can you imagine seeing your wheel rolling past you and the axle of your float dragging on the road, horses panicking at the noise or the brakes locking on and creating a small fire. These are things that can happen if your wheel bearings fail. Matt Smith from Helensvale on the Gold Coast is offering a mobile on-site bearing repair and replacement service for floats to prevent such misphaps. Endurance race celebrates 50 years Australia’s premier endurance event, the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, will this year be held at the Del Rio Resort on the Hawkesbury River in NSW, only a short distance from the scenic village of Wisemans Ferry. In 2015 the Tom Quilty, held on June 6 and 7, will be celebrating the culmination of 50 years of endurance in Australia as organisers are expecting the 2015 event will be the biggest endurance event ever held in Australia. The course at the Del Rio Resort has already proven to be a winner having hosted the NSW State championships in June last year. This premier event is being hosted by NSWERA. The Tom Quilty Gold Cup is designed to test the skill of horse and rider and the trophy is awarded to the winner of the 160km endurance who could not only complete the gruelling course but whose horse also finished in sound health. The original Tom Quilty gold cup is held in the ‘Stockman’s Hall of Fame’ in Longreach as the inception of the Quilty Cup ride was nurtured by Queenslanders Erica and RM Williams who loved their distance riding and their beloved Arabian horses. RM’s Rockybar Stud was situated in Queensland. The Quilty was named after RM’s old mate Tom Quilty of Spring Vale Station in the

Aside from the actual race, there will be a host of activities surrounding the Quilty with a week full of memories of past Quilties including a static display of photographs, saddles, trophies, buckles and past press releases etc. There will also be a camp fire night where guests will be invited to share their recollec-

tions of rides gone past. A coffee table book is being compiled full of Quilty memorabilia from 50 years of tradition. The response to the opening of entries has been unprecedented in the sport of endurance in this country with more than 465 entries and a waiting list of more than 60 riders. Riders and their horses from across Australia, the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa will start at Webbs Creek on the Hawkesbury River in a tribute to the popularity of the event and it first 26 starters in 1966. The TQ15 committee are proud to announce that the 50th anniversary Tom Quilty will be available live through the web streaming broadcaster. This will give viewers the opportunity to find out what happens out on track. There will be five cameras roaming not only the ride base but out on track sending back live images. Knee chips in horses Knee chips are very common in racing horses and are a frequent cause of lameness and loss of form. Interestingly, the problem only occurs at speed and lameness due to knee chips is very rare in slower performance disciplines. This is a critical factor for pleasure horse owners to understand. In the great majority of cases of knee lameness, once the initial trauma settles, it is very unlikely that the knee problems will ever bother the horse again, as long as it does not return to racing. As the biggest pool of potential pleasure horses is retired racehorses, I feel it is important for owners to understand something about “knee chips” Knee chips are a problem for race horses. Simplistically there are two factors responsible for this. Firstly, the speed at which the horse performs. Speed is a factor of stride length and stride frequency. Consequently horses racing at maximum speed tend to have a longer stride than slower performing horses and hence, the foot at impact, is placed well out in front of the horse. As the foot loads, there is a "backward" bending of the limb which tends to pinch or compress the leading edges of the

bones of the knee and fetlock. The actual reality is that the true biomechanics are much more complex than this, particularly in the knee as the joint is made up of a number of small block like bones and they all move relative to each other. In particular, the weight of rider further complicates the natural movement as the jockey is continually changing position and so the weight distribution is constantly changing. Secondly, the fetlock and knee are "hinge" joints that have a huge range of movement which means that flexion and extension move through a wide angle. This further exacerbates the "backward compression" or pinching of the front of the joint. Understanding these principles is crucial to expectations of what the surgery is likely to achieve. The reason the “chip” was there in the first place is because of the particular biomechanics and conformation of the horse. The most important factor for the management of the horse to consider is that "chip fractures" as they are called, are not a one off happening. They are the result of accumulated inflammation and degenerative cycles experienced by the joint from all the previous fast work episodes and training. As the front of the joint is repeat-

Knee Chip on xray ly after a gallop and the joint surfaces are very damaged and inflamed. This is not a good area to further traumatise with surgery and so it is advisable to let the acute inflammation settle down before surgery. The most important element in recovery is time at rest to allow the cartilage to heal. We usually recommend a course of phenylbutazone for a period of time. Phenylbutazone acts as an antiinflammatory agent by "soaking" up the chemical mediators of inflammation. Removal of these agents allows healing to progress. In some cases, those with more severe joint inflammation, a course of injectable hyaluronic acid into the joint may be beneficial. This would normally commence about 4-6 weeks after the surgery and be continued periodically for varying courses as recommended. "Joint Food" products such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, MSM and the injectable polysulphated glycosaminoglycan products (Pentosan, Cartrophen) are certainly beneficial but the effect is marginal in resting horses. Be that as it may, TIME is the most important factor. If the joint has been “cleaned” up by surgery and returned to health with time, if the plan is to return the horse to racing, then it is very important to dramatically modify the training program so that fast gallop work is kept to an absolute minimum. Alternate training methodology is a complex subject on its own Of more importance to potential pleasure horse new owners, is that there is absolutely no need to worry about anything. Obviously this is a very big statement, and proper advice regarding the particular individual circumstance should always be obtained, but in almost all cases, racehorses that have had their career curtailed because of knee chips, will have a very high expectation that they can transition to slower speed disciplines, and be perfectly functional. This applies to cross country work as well, as most of this is performed at three quarter pace, not the supra maximal efforts of racing, and the knee can easily tolerate this.

edly pinched and compressed, progressive deterioration of the joint occurs until ultimately the horse becomes lame and radiographs are taken. The problem is biomechanical and is directly related to the use to which the horse is put. It stands to reason that returning the horse to exactly the same program of training and management will inevitably lead to recurrence of the degenerative joint disease. Knee chip surgery does not "cure" the horse's problem. It is, however, extremely valuable in that it removes all the excess and proliferative bone that has developed in the joint. It allows us to assess the quality of the remaining cartilage on the joint surfaces, and to curette and flush out all the accumulated debris and inflammatory mediators in the joint. This is very important as it amounts to "creating a clean slate" for the horse to return to work. Leaving the fragments and debris in place only cascades the inflammation, resulting in permanent and ongoing lameness. During the surgery we assess the condition of the cartilage surfaces in the joint and make recommendations for the length of time and any treatment modalities for the horse while spelling. In general, the more severe the damage the longer the time out. It is essential to provide this time to allow the cartilage to regenerate and heal. It is a slow process but if the cause of the inflammation and degeneration is removed, it will heal eventually. Post operative x-rays are always taken of your horse. It is important to realise that not all the proliferative material in the joint can be removed. Much of the material seen on x-ray is actually situated in the joint capsule and is inaccessible from the joint surface at arthroscopy. Attempting to remove this requires cutting down through the joint capsule and often only serves to make the problem worse. Post-Op x-rays can often be disappointing to the owners because of some of the residual proliferative material. The critical area to evaluate is the actual joint spaces and surfaces, as this is where the degenerated cartilage lives. Surgery curettes and removes all visible unhealthy cartilage. We “cut” back to fresh bleeding healthy bone, removing all the damaged material. This provides a fresh area for healing to occur. It is the removal of this damaged cartilage that provides the real benefit of surgery, not the removal of the “chip” itself. We always advise a “cooling” off period before surgery. Logically, most “chips” are discovered only when the horse becomes lame. This is usual-

Many supplements also contain vitamins, which are feed grade (not fit for human consumption). Many other ingredients used in these supplements are industrial and technical grade, so my advice is always check the quality of ingredients and choose only oral grade, after all don’t our horses deserve the best? Like any other substance your horse ingests, supplements should be treated with respect, so it is important to be aware that they have the potential to do harm, as well as good. My final message I believe it is necessary to regulate equine supplements in a similar way to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for humans, this would ensure quality every time. The APVMA does not accommodate the advancement in legitimate natural products like the TGA. The TGA, since the Pan Pharmaceuticals disaster (many years ago now), requires strict scientific data behind all ingredients used and cited on the TGA list. It's important to talk to your Equine Nutritionist, Herbalist or Veterinarian before making a choice and consider the horse's entire nutritional picture before you add a supplement to his or her diet. It's equally important to feed a supplement according to the product directions and for the length of time specified before you make up your mind as to its benefits or lack thereof. Remember that products made with inferior ingredients, quality control, or labelling might not impart any benefit, and any perceived benefit from a supplement is anecdotal evidence (not necessarily something backed up by peer-reviewed studies).

What is in your feed room currently, are there containers of various herbal concoctions vitamin supplements etc. Supplements have become much more a part of general health care these days, very different to how it was many years ago when horses were just fed oats and hay. It is well worth considering; does your horse really need a supplement and if he or she does then is it the right one? The most endearing feature of supplements is the flexibility of being used in many different ways. Supplements can be beneficial with horses that suffer from joint issues, pain and muscle soreness etc. They can also be used for nervous horses to assist with tenseness, they can be used to assist with weight or help with hormonal imbalances. Certainly they do have their uses and in my profession as an Equine Nutritionist and Medical Herbalist results can be very exciting, but my concern as always is the health of the horse. As horse owners, many of us take supplements every day, like the general population, but in many cases do not know why they are taking them? Glossy magazine ads and TV commercials can be very convincing. There is no doubt that from a scientific point of view certain types of supplements can be enormously beneficial. If a horse is fed a well balanced diet, does the horse require a daily supplement?

The answer is probably yes. Over recent years, research in Australia and overseas has provided more accurate guidelines on the nutritional requirements of horses and how they alter in relation to growth, exercise or reproductive requirement. Analysis of feeds gathered from different localities and climates, has proven that there are low or inadequate levels of certain nutrients, which can affect the health and performance of a horse. In some cases, individual nutrients provided in non-regulated feeds are imbalanced or in excess of needs and, if not corrected, can be detrimental to a horse’s well being. Important note: older horses not working with access to good quality pasture may obtain an adequate intake of major nutrients, minerals and vitamins to meet their needs, but more often than not they may still require some form of supplementation. Important note: Research has proven that soils in Australia that have been constantly producing feed, whether it be hays or grain, have depleted nutrient levels in the soil, leaving produce grown in these areas sadly deficient in many important vitamins and minerals. The salinity level has also risen, and the overuse of pesticides has also contributed to nutrient deficient soils, plus the big one, global warming and its effects on climate change. Is there a risk of over-supplementing? There are many nutritional supplements on the market for horses; the vast majority contain simple minerals (not fit for human consumption), which are poorly absorbed and utilised by the horse and then are required at high levels to provide some support.

The Horse Report

Supplements From page 14

Many supplements contain oils and fats and in 70-85% of all cases there will always be an improvement in coat condition. If it is simply a shiny coat horse owners are wanting then purchasing some cold pressed sunflower, flax or soy oil may well be all you need to do, but don’t forget that this will not provide your horse with the full amount of vitamins and minerals he or she may require. I feel that products using ingredients that have solid published human data behind them gives the horse owner reassurance that the product they are using will deliver results. I think it is also the responsibility of companies producing supplements to provide a certificate of analysis, specifications and science behind their products. It is also their responsibility to provide details of the form of minerals etc and source. If there is a statement made such as ‘organic vitamin and mineral supplement’ or ‘only organic herbs used’ then this needs to be backed up, because being realistic it is extremely expensive to locate organic products that have been through stringent testing to achieve certification. Having been a product formulator for over 25 years I am very used to the lengths one must go to find and secure organic and genuine natural ingredients. I am very fortunate to have developed long term relationships with suppliers so quality is

always guaranteed. Too many inferior ingredients are used and there is also not sufficient regulations to police this. Too many products only contain a small level of actives, what else is contained in these products? Example of an

grazing good quality pasture

extremely well know and used brand A: Magnesium (as amino acid/protein chelate and oxide) 90g/kg , dl-.alpha.-Tocopheryl acetate 30,000IU/kg, dl-.alpha.Tocopheryl adsorbate 30,000IU/kg and Thiamine hydrochloride 6.66g/kg , the total is just under 149grams/kg, thats not even 15%!. So what else is contained in this product, the MSDS states ‘Blend of vitamins and minerals in a suitable carrier’? I have always believed that ‘if it is good enough for us to consume then it is good enough for our horses too’. The fact that a horse is an animal does not mean there is a licence to feed them a poor, possibly harmful ingredient, or worse a product that is ineffective. Below are some examples of the types of supplements available in the Equine Industry today. Supplements for horses can be divided into a variety of categories. • Joint health • Respiratory health • Anti-inflammatory and pain relief • Antioxidant

• Calming • GI tract health • Electrolytes • Immune system health • Energy boosters Hoof growth and health Insect control • Metabolic issues • Muscle health • Vitamins and minerals • Senior supplements • Skin and coat • Tendon and ligament health For further advice on choosing the right supplement, understanding how to read a label or any advice on equine nutrition, please contact Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Antoinette Foster antoinette@hiform.com.au or phone 03 97756422 all advice is free

Clarence Valley Country Muster honours Anzacs A record crowd is expected to roll up for this year's third annual Clarence Valley Country Muster music festival north-east of Grafton. This year’s music event will take on a very special meaning with a special parade to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. At the official opening of the muster on Friday October 30, a lone piper will lead a parade held to commemorate the ill-fated landing of Anzacs at Gallipoli a century ago. The march, starting at 1pm, will include members of the Clarence Valley's Light Horse ceremonial mounted cavalry, an historic horse-pulled cart carrying a hospital matron in period costume, a horse and carriage containing local dignitaries, a team of Clydesdales, RSL sub-branch members and Glenn Jones - a country music performer and star of the Outback Spectacular show on the Gold Coast. The Anzac parade will move down the boulevard leading to the entertainment, food and display areas. It will pass by 60 trees signifying the number of Clarence Valley Diggers who didn't come home from The Great War, a row of horse shoes with soldiers' names etched into them and an avenue of poppies. Organiser Wendy Gordon, who runs the Clarence Valley event on her property at Calliope, said it was fitting that this year’s muster honoured diggers from World War One. "Their efforts must never be forgotten," she said. "We lost men from this very area, so I for one will feel very proud to recognise their bravery in horrific battles for freedom." She has also organised a contest for established and aspiring poets to come up with a verse about Anzac. The writer of the winning poem receives $500 cash. Heritage is the very theme of the 2015 Clarence Valley Country Muster. Apart from the Anzac tribute, event attractions, beside the music entertainment, will include a selection of historic Ulmarra and district photos from the outstanding collection of custodian Kevin Watkins, blacksmiths forging their products and an enthralling gallery of work by acclaimed equine and

The Horse Report

Old sport of horse archery is returning in a new age Are you ready for a challenge - a real challenge?? There is a new horse sport in town but it’s not that new. As a matter of fact it’s been around longer than showjumping and even dressage. Actually it’s been around for thousands of years - it’s mounted archery. The Greeks, Mongols, Samurai and many other ancient civilisations had mounted archers. The Romans were rubbish at it so did the Roman thing and employed Parthian mercenaries to fill their ranks with the required skill. The Egyptians where more genteel and shot bows and arrows from chariots. Time and developments in warfare including massed archers on foot who could shoot bows of larger draw weight and thus shoot further and the development of firearms saw the demise of mounted archers. However some countries including Japan and Korea kept the martial skill and made a sport of it and from these countries we have the new sport of horse archery. The sport of Horse Archery which is practiced in many countries including Australia requires a rider to shoot a number of targets whilst mounted in walk, trot and/or canter. Depending on the round being shot the targets may be angled or side on and the number of arrows shot at each target vary as well. Distance from the target is seven metres and is normally done by riding the horse down an alley or fenced off lane. Just how well is your horse really schooled? You may be able to jump 1.3 meters or do a canter half pass but can you control the speed of your horse and or direction without reins? Sort of obvious but to draw a bow you require two hands and must also be able to do so whilst controlling your horse. Archery skills? The bows used are traditional horse archery bows so this normally means a recurve bow. No wheels or cables which in any case would only make the job harder. No sight window which is a modern inno-

Page 24

vation and makes shooting from a moving platform nearly impossible. Just a basic bow designed by various cultures thousands of years ago. This very basic bow is actually the best tool for the job in hand as it has been perfected over a long period for one purpose only, to deliver a killing shot from a horse. Placing the arrow on the string is called nocking and to be able to nock an arrow quickly without referencing the placement of the arrow on the string by looking at the process is probably the most challenging aspect of mounted archery. Most competitors not only practice hitting a target but also the speed of nocking an arrow. The horse. Now one of the great aspects of this sport is that you don’t need a $50k warmblood to be competitive. As a matter of fact that expensive horse with massive ground covering paces is probably at a major disadvantage to the $300 nag you picked up at the doggers. However the horse must be able to handle the sound of the arrow being fired out of the bow and also the odd clout with either an arrow, errant bow or unbalanced archer. This like most things comes down to schooling and compared to a well executed flying change is rather easy, just habituation to the repeated sound. Some horses take weeks to settle to this while others are much easier to habituate. Just be careful. Some of the positives of this sport are that it is fun and is cheap to get into. There are no restrictions on saddle type, horse etc, just the bow and arrows being used. The type of horse as mentioned earlier need not be a Warmblood but a smaller horse with smaller movement is way easier to shoot from. Older and steadier is a plus and the horse you may have retired due to age is probably ideal as you are looking for calm and relaxed horse with not expressive and definitely not explosive movement. How to get into this sport?

Queensland Horse Sports’ John Downs in action doing horse archery.

A number of clubs exist throughout Australia and in South East Queensland, a new club has just started up - Queensland Horse Sports - which includes mounted archery in the equestrian sports that the club is promoting. This new club had its first rally day in May at Runcorn Pony Club on the south side of Brisbane just off the Gateway Arterial motorway. The club’s next rally day is on Sunday, June 28 at the Runcorn venue. Qld Horse Sports is also promoting other equestrian sports include working equitation, Garrotcha, competitive long reining and trick horse training. The club’s motto is cross training for your horse. For the horse archery the club has two insured instructors who not only have horse archery skills but considerable ground archery experience. Fore more information contact John Downes 0429 486839

Check your attitude towards your horse By TANJA KRAUS “Your attitude determines your altitude”. I love this quote! Often I will say at clinics, or when someone is having trouble with their horse, that they need to look to themselves to see if there is an issue causing the issue that they are complaining about. For example, someone might come to me and say that their horse rushes in its gaits, or perhaps it is braced when being ridden. Most of the time I see this reflected in the owner - the owner tilted forward, causing the weight to come down on the horse’s shoulders, causing the horse to lose balance and then rush. Or I see the owner bracing in their own body and I see the horse bracing while being ridden by that person. Body position and riding skill is one thing - but I wanted to take a look at this from another angle - our attitude. What is your attitude like when it comes to your horse? How much of your baggage are you putting on him before you even get started? When I am preparing for a clinic, I always plan for it to be the best clinic that I have ever done. I want everyone to leave a clinic excited, pumped and inspired about the future with their horse. This is an easy mindset for me and it goes a long way towards my attitude when I first walk into that arena at 9am and start coaching. But what about your attitude? I know that a lot of people come to clinics with

A positive and constructive attitude towards your horse will help build a much better and stronger relationship with it. a problem horse or a horse that has a few issues or a horse that they need to work on but their success is quite dependent on their attitude towards the horse and the clinic. Often people are able to tell me how their horse is going to behave at a clinic before they even load up and get there - they will send me a message and say 'he will go crazy', 'he doesn't like other horses', he gets nervous etc etc. Now of course some of these things we say due to past experiences - but your horse isn't bringing those experiences with him to the clinic and so neither should you.

Just because your child has one bad day at school - does that mean the rest of the year is going to be terrible? No! Each day is different - and the same goes for your horse. But if you decide that you know how the horse is going to be at a clinic, then that’s the way you will treat him and that’s the way he will be. What about your attitude to the clinic? Are you heading in thinking 'oh I’ve done clinics with this person before, they are all the same, I won’t learn anything new' - of course you won’t! If that’s what you think going in then you aren't even going to be listening for things you don't know (and frankly you are the type of student that will ruin the experience for everyone else with your negativity). How about your attitude to external things that you cant control 'oh I don't like that other student, I'm going to have a bad weekend' or 'oh no its raining / too hot / too cold, that means that I’m not going to learn much at this one', what about 'oh no there are heaps of beginners at this clinic, it will be really basic and I won’t get anything'. Can you see how you choose how much you get out of a clinic or a lesson ? The coach can only 'put it out there' - it’s up to you how much you are going to reach out and take. Every single time I am at a clinic or having a lesson, or event fence sitting at an event I make a conscious decision to learn. It takes a conscious commitment and the right attitude, to be learning consistently. Next time you are heading to your horse - do an 'attitude check' on yourself - it may go a long way. www.tanjakraushorsemanship.wordpress.com/

Ribbleton Attunement - Working in harmony and inspiring responsiveness By PAULETTE EVANS Good feelings in the mind show in the body! An obedient horse will do what it is told to do. A willing horse will embrace what it is asked to do. The way you think about working with your horse and the way you approach your horse will have a big effect on how they respond. Everything we do with horses they will either embrace or exclude us. From leading to riding to ground work to liberty, our goal should be for our horses to embrace working with us. In this article I want to show you some photos to help teach you what to look for in horses embracing their training and then horses bracing against their training and us. 1 - Square halt

3 - Embracing posture.

In the picture at the bottom of the previous column, this horse is making the choice to come up onto the arena for training. Inviting your horse to work with you is a great way to start your training session! 6 - Excluding posture

This horse photo shows an embracing posture. You can see she is curved around the trainer. Her body is round and proud. She looks like she is having a good time. Her ears show she is connected and concentrating on her trainer. 4 - Excluding posture.

This horse is bent away from the trainer as she prepares her for riding. She doesn't look like she wants to be working with the trainer. 7 - Communication

When a horse feels good about it's training they will show this in their bodies. We would all like our horses to do a square halt, but did you know that if a horse feels good then they naturally give you a square halt? When a horse feels proud and confident he puts has his hind legs underneath to give a square halt. 2 - Embracing posture

This mare is not embracing her trainer. You might see a lot of similarities to the first photo, but the big difference is that she is bent away from the trainer. This posture will not make her feel good because it is hard for her to balance. She doesn't look happy. Your horse needs to agree with what you are asking them to do to feel happy. Many horses are taught to be obedient, that means they are taught to do what they are told. You need to be careful not to confuse obedience with the horse agreeing to what you say. Your horse’s body and face will help to tell you if they have a positive attitude to what you are asking! 5 - Positive attitude

When a horse moves with pride it's body becomes alive and the beauty radiates from the inside out. A happy engaged horse is round in it's body, the neck is arched like a swan and they move lightly on their feet. We all like to try and read facial expressions as they tell us a lot about how the horse feels, but we need to combine the face with the body to get the full picture. Let's now compare an embracing posture to an excluding posture. Page 28

This trainer is getting ready to put the bridle on. You can see the horse is there of his own free will and is engaged and interested in the process. Sometimes you might not be sure if the horse saying no to you or are they just unsure? Either way you need to make a change. I always accept a no from a horse unless it is a safety issue. An example of a safety issue would be if we were out on a busy road and I have no choice if I am to keep us safe. If this happens it's important to review that activity before doing it again. Horses can be very subtle when they are telling us how they feel or they can be very obvious. We need to read and respond to the subtle feedback they are giving us so that our horse doesn't need to get loud with us.

Communicating with you horse From page 28

Everything you are learning on the ground with your horse can be applied to riding on the horses back.

SUBTLE COMMUNICATION 8 - Feedback

11 - Embracing posture In the first two riding photos you can see the horses look relaxed, their bodes are round and you can feel that they are happy.

This horse is telling the trainer that he is unsure. We can see this because he is slightly bent away from the trainer and his face looks a little worried. It's important for this trainer to wait and give the horse some time. 9 - No

This horse is saying no to engaging because she is walking away from the trainer.

If your horse is unsure you need to listen and make a change. You may need to change the activity or you may need to be clearer. The choice you make depends on two main things: 1. Is there any value in the activity for the horse or is it just you wanting more, perhaps more than the horse is able to give that day and; 2. Are you confusing your horse? It's important for a horses confidence that you make sense. If a horse gets confused they become worried and then won't want to work with you. The two photos below show horses that are unsure. You can compare these photos to the first ones of an embracing horse. You can see that their bodies don't look round and proud, they are not putting their hind legs under themselves very well and their faces look unhappy.

The first horse is walking freely with his head held high and the second is being asking to be rounder in the neck, but in both they are happy with the trainer. 18 - Excluding posture

This horse is also saying no. She is trying to pull away from the trainer. OBVIOUS COMMUNICATION 10 - No reaction This is the same horse in the next two photos. The trainer hasn't listened to her so she now needs to yell to try to get her trainer to listen. She does this by rearing, leaping and kicking up with her hind end.

Compare the first riding photo pf embracing posture to the photo immediately above and you can see a very different posture. Instead of looking round in his body shape, he looks hollow through the back. If you want to learn more about Ribbleton Attunement visit www.ribbleton.com

THE HORSE

THAT TALKS Did you know that horses talk? You only need to listen to the signs they show you to understand what they’re saying. They could talk to you by hanging the tongue out, getting the tongue over the bit or rolling the tongue back. These are all signs of bit pain and are their way of telling you. Those aren’t the only signs: many may chew, grind, grab or chomp on the bit because they are trying to hold the bit pressure off their tongue. Some will lean on the rein, hang on one rein bad, pull the reins through your hands, head toss, run through the bit, or bolt, while others will rear and buck to get rid of the pain or the rider at the end of the reins. Horses will open their mouth to give them more room, enabling them to roll their tongue back or hang it out to escape the bit pain. Others will rub their face on their leg or the rider at the end of the ride - this is them saying “Please get the bit out of my mouth! It has hurt me!” There is extensive research behind the Winning Tongue Plate Bit, and combined with input from leading trainers and riders the design of the bits has helped to overcome these problems. These riders have stated it’s like having power steering and the difference the WTP bit makes is comparable to wearing comfortable slippers all day instead of high heels.

Hard work pays off at NSW pony club championship The Pony Club NSW State Jumping Equitation Championship was held over the weekend of May 16 and 17 at the Hawkesbury Showgrounds, Clarendon. Rachael Temm from Forest Hills Pony Club in Zone 23 was awarded the 17 and under 25 years Age Champion at the event, adding a third Championship win to her name after claiming the recent One Day Event and Dressage Pony Club State titles. "I enjoy catching up with my friends that have been made from all over the state, but the main highlight is being able to showcase all the hard work that I put into my horse Rusty, and receiving such positive comments always makes it so much more valuable, RTachael said. “Many lessons go into my preparation for events like this; riding before or after school in the dark and many hours of cleaning and packing gear, but of course it's all worth it in the end." The Jumping Equitation Championships involve riders being judged both on their riding style and control of the horse whilst completing a jumping course. Around 120 competitors along with their families travelled from all around the state to take part in the event. Congratulations to the following pony club riders who were announced as the 2015 Jumping Equitation Age Champions. Rebecca Groat from Griffith Pony Club in Zone 21 was awarded the Under 13 years Age Champion, and Sasha Maguire from Avondale was named the Reserve Champion. The 13 and under 15 years Age Champion went to Olivia Skye Sylvester from Nundle Pony Club in Zone 5, and Reserve Champion awarded to Lucie

took out the Reserve Champion. Rachel Temm competed alongside her sister Victoria at the Championship who also placed an impressive fifth overall in the Associates Age group. "My sister Victoria and I are extremely grateful to PCA NSW for giving us the wonderful opportunity to compete in such prestigious events; not only to compete in well organised and efficiently run competitions, but also to be in an atmosphere that is both competitive but highly supportive." Zone 23 Pony Clubs including Forest Hills, Dural, Avondale and Arcadia were awarded the most points throughout the competition and were named the 2015 Jumping Equitation Champion Zone.

Rachael Temm added a third State Title to her name after claiming the 17-25 years Jumping Equitation Age Champion at the Pony Club NSW Championships.

Saddle up for Crackin Cancer Ride The Crackin' Cancer -Three Waters High Country Holidays weeklong horse trail ride is on again. Come along and enjoy a great week with likeminded trail riders in the picturesque New England region of New South Wales at Three Waters High Country Holidays at Glen Innes from October 17th to October 24th this year. Riders will traverse through bush, over open grazing country and across creeks. They will ride where few white men, apart from graziers and their employees, have been. Wild deer, wild goats, wild pigs and native wildlife inhabit this area. Riders will have a great time, both in and out of the saddle. Riders can arrive on Thursday or Friday if they wish. Those who choose to do this, can fossick for sapphires, go fishing or just enjoy the serenity of Three Waters itself. You can even stay on after the ride. It's up to you. Three Waters "High Country' Holidays is on Bullock Mountain Road at Glen Innes. This ride is to help raise much needed funds, which is vital to the continuation of important research into causes and cures of this debilitating disease called cancer. The total cost of the Crackin' Cancer part of the ride is $200. Riders receive two free meals out of this, those being the Welcome Dinner and the Goodbye Dinner. This payment is to Crackin' Cancer, not the Cancer Council or Three Waters High Country Holidays. To secure your place on this annual ride, you need to pay a $25 - non refundable deposit - now - and the balance of your $200 before October 10. The first ride will be on Sunday, October 18th. Riders will ride out at between 8.30 am and 8.45 am each day.

The Crackin Cancer Charity Horse Ride will take participants into some of the most scenic areas around Glen Innes.

Rides will return at approximately 3.30 pm to 4.00 pm each day The second ride will be on Monday - third Tuesday - fourth Thursday - fifth Friday. Wednesday will be a rest day, you can go fossicking for sapphires, fishing, or take a trip into town. For further information on the ride, please email: crackincancer@hotmail.com Marshall fittler at Crackin' Cancer on 02 66 244 879 or 0411 840 797 For further information on Three Waters High Country Holidays: email: stevelangley2013@gmail.com or phone Steve on 02 67 324 863.

The Horse Report

Going on holidays this winter? By LARISSA BILSTON, Nutritionist, Equine Vit&Min As horse owners, we often trust our trusty steeds to the neighbours, local horse loving children or our parents and friends to provide feed and water when we go on holidays. But for the non-horsey carer, some of the horse feeding rules we take for granted can seem just plain strange. So what does a temporary horse carer need to know? • Clean fresh drinking water must be available at all times. Ice may need to be broken on the top of the water trough during frosty weather. There should be enough water in the trough that the horses never run out. • Grass or hay must be available at all times – a horse must never be left without forage to eat. • The type of grass or hay fed must suit the horse’s needs – overweight, laminitic or insulin resistant animals need constant access to low sugar/starch forms of hay. • A small hole/slow feeder haynet can help slow down hay consumption by only allowing the horse to eat a stem or two at a time. This keeps the horse with a constant slow trickle of feed through the stomach which keeps the gut and mind healthy. • Horses are creatures of habit, and like to be fed at approximately the same time each day. • If the horse is to be fed a hard feed (grain, pellets etc) it must be fed the same feed every day – follow the feeding instructions carefully and don’t ever add a new ingredient suddenly. • If a horse is to be rugged/unrugged, this must happen every day and early enough in the day to prevent overheating or becoming too cold. A rugged horse cannot regulate its body temperature as well as an unrugged one. • A horse that does not want to eat dinner when you visit is probably sick , and the owner and/or a vet should be contacted immediately. Before you go away, you will need to do some preparation to make it easier for those caring for your horse. • Buy enough feed ingredients for the time you will be away. It’s a good idea to label your feed storage drums when someone new is to be in charge of making feeds up. • Do not begin to introduce anything new into the diet in the

Pre-planning feed and care for your horses will allow for a more enjoyable holiday away from them.

days before you leave. If you plan to change feeds, begin this gradual process a few weeks before your holiday begins. • Either make up feeds (into plastic bags with the horse’s name on it) or leave a very clear feeding chart in your feed room. Remember to include electrolytes, vitamin and mineral supplements and any other additives or medications on the chart. Make sure your horse’s worming and vaccination schedule is all up to date weeks (not days) before you leave. • Make a few copies of horsefeeding and rugging/stabling instructions – leave one in the feed room, give one to the carer and put a spare in the tackroom. • If you have more than one

horse, it can be useful to draw a map showing where each horse lives, with a brief description (colour, size, rug etc). This can prevent the disastrous outcome which could occur from your laminitic pony accidently being fed the 3kg of grain you intended for your lactating thoroughbred broodmare! • Have your carer over to feed with you a few times in the week before you leave. Try to cover both morning and afternoon routines if possible. It can be a good idea to ask your carer to do the feeding once by themselves before you leave so they can ask for clarification if necessary. • Provide contact phone numbers with your feeding instruction. Numbers to include are:

- yourself - others you may be travelling with - the place you will be staying - a knowledgeable horsey friend who lives nearby - your preferred vet - a couple of alternative vets. • Contact your knowledgeable horsey friend and your vet to let them know you will be away (give them the dates) and ask permission for your carer to contact them with any questions or concerns. Also give them your holiday contact details and your carer’s phone number. • Let your carer know that you’d much rather they contact you/horsey friend/vet if in doubt rather than risk coming home to a very sick horse. Enjoy your holidays!
