Aquis Tour final goes down to the wire The Aquis Champions Tour showjumping event concluded at Elysian Fields at Canungra with a narrow win to rider Merrick Ubank riding Alantinus. He scored the Pryde's EasiFeed Gold Tour Final Ubank by just .35 of a second from Clint Beresford and Emmaville Jitterbug to claim the first prize of $35,000, the richest event on the Australian showjumping calendar. More than 300 of Australia's best showjumpers competed on the Gold Coast in the nine-day program for more than $340,000 in total prize money at the third annual Aquis Champions Tour. Competition manager Michelle McMahon was delighted with the quality of competition at the prestigious event. "Over the course of the program we've seen some spectacular jumping and tough competition with competitors from all Australian states and international entrants from Japan and New Zealand,” she said. "Elysian Fields has been a first-class venue and this has been reflected in the quality of this elite event." The Coolmore Silver Tour was won by Stephen Dingwell riding Cavalier Du Rouet, just .06 of a second ahead of Tom McDermott and Elegance De La Charmille. McDermott had paid double entry fee for

Do I need to rug my horse? For domestic horses the answer is yes, no and maybe! While it is true that wild and free living horses survive without rugs, they roam free and can find their own shelter from bad weather. Domestic horses are kept in confined spaces and are not free to find shelter out of the wind and rain and therefore need artificial shelter and extra warmth in cold wet weather. Some breeds of horses have a very fine skin and coat (such as Thoroughbreds). This means that they feel the wet and cold more than tougher, hardier breeds. In cold, wet weather, a good quality and well-fitting rug can help the horse to maintain condition, as a cold, wet horse will burn a lot of energy keeping warm. As the chill of winter descends upon the paddocks, our thoughts turn to how we can best make our horses warm and comfortable in the cold, wet and often windy conditions. Although some acclimatization occurs, generally horses shiver if the temperature drops below 17ºC and sweat if it rises above 36ºC. This is called the comfort zone. Outside this 20ºC range, shivering and sweating are necessary to maintain body temperature - but both use up body energy and protein stores, leading to stress and loss of condition. Newborn foals have high metabolic rates and tolerate lower temperatures, but because they have little insulation in the form of hair coat or body fat, they rely on shivering, food intake and acitivity to maintain core body temperature. Rugs and hoods warm from the outside - what is the best way to warm horses from the inside? Most body heat is generated by the digestion of food. Heat produced by digestion enables mammals to maintain steady body temperature in the face of changing environmental conditions. By increasing heat produced during digestion we can reduce the amount of shivering. Reducing shivering and weight loss by shifting the 'comfort zone'. During digestion different feeds release different amounts of heat. Of the energy in meadow hay, 66% is converted to heat, in lucerne hay 42%, and oats and corn, 32 and 20% respectively. Heat liberated during digestion makes the horse warm on the inside and hence they can tolerate colder outside temperatures. The graphs show how heat produced during fermentation allows horses to tolerate different temperature ranges. When a horse has not eaten for a while, ongoing metabolic processes produce 30MJ of body heat. This allows the horse to maintain body temperatue when the outside air (ambient) temperature is between 17ºC and 36ºC.
Heat produced during digestion of 3.5 - 4kg of grain yields 10 MJ of body heat, allowing the horse to maintain body temperature, without having to 'top up' by shivering, when ambient temperature is between about 3ºC and32ºC.
The heat generated by hay digestion allows horses to be comfortable from minus 8ºC to 26ºC.
Comfort Zone for Horses Fed 5-6 kg of Hay
From the above graphs, it can be seen that the most efficient way to keep our equine companions warm during winter, is to feed more hay. Concentrates: A balanced concentrate, based on grains, protein meals, vitamins and minerals will supply nutrients not present in hay. As the proportion of hay increases, concentrate intake may drop, so it is important to provide a highly digestible, energy-dense concentrate. The more digestible the concentrate, the lower the amount needed to meet requirements. Page 8
Crushing and cracking do little to improve digestibility and cause oxidation of nutrients; boiling reduces vitamin content - unless the temperature and duration of cooking are carefully controlled and pelleting reduces calcium and magnesium absorption. Pressure-cooking and steam extrusion of feedstuffs combines the timehonoured practices of milling and cooking. It is done under carefully controlled conditions designed to minimise nutrient changes, while maximising digestibility. This increases both energy and protein digestibility, so a smaller amount of extruded feed is required compared to pellets, raw grains and unprocessed feeds - offering cost advantages as well as preventing overfilling of the gut - especially when hay intake increases in cold weather. Energy: Two factors increase energy requirements in winter. Firstly, the digestible energy of winter pastures is low; second, energy requirements increase by about 5% for every 1ºC drop in temperature below 15ºC. If the weather is wet and windy as well as, energy needs increase a further 40 - 50%. To sustain a high metabolic rate without losing condition, horses need more feed or feed with a higher energy-density. There are several ways to increase energy. Adding an extra dipper of oats or corn; adding oil or using a highly digestible feed. When adding extra grain, it is important to have the diet analysed, because high phosphorus and low minerals in grain could unbalance the diet and supplements may be required - especially for young, pregnant or working horses. Increasing the oil in the diet is a safe and effective way of increasing energy, as oils are high in energy and well digested. Steam extrusion improves protein, mineral, fibre and energy digestibility by up to 40% and releases nutrients that were previously unavailable. The untangling of nutrients during steam extrusion allows digestive enzymes in the small intestine to work up to 100 times faster - increasing nutrient availability and reducing acid, heat and gas production. Body condition: Having energy stored in the form of muscle and fat is important. Thin horses have a higher metabolic rate just to maintain body temperature because they lack insulation. A thick hair coat can mask thinness and weight loss, so it is important to run your hands over your horse regularly to pick up condition loss. Horses that are clipped begin to shiver when the temperature is some 10 - 15ºC higher than those that have a thick hair coat. Warm feeds: The warm smell of bran freshly mixed with hot molasses promises comfort and contentment. Whilst high in B-group vitamins bran contains poor quality protein and is only 12% fibre - the same as oats. Meadow hay is 38% fibre and lucerne 28%, making bran a low fibre supplement and expensive for the low level of nutrition it provides. Loose manure the day after a bran mash is due not to a laxative effect, but to the sudden change in diet which induces a low grade digestive upset by irritating the gut wall and compromising the bacteria in the large intestine. Never-the-less, bran is very palatable to horses - especially when suffused with warm molasses - making it a great way to tempt appetite and give horses a treat on cold nights. Bran should be restricted to less than 10% of the diet as it contains 9 times as much phosphorus than calcium. Bran is also high in phytates which bind calcium, preventing absorption. An occasional bran mash is not harmful, but a separate calcium supp1ement may be necessary.

Should I clip my horse? As the days grow shorter, the diminishing sunlight triggers your horse to grow a winter coat. One way to cope with a winter coat is to clip it off. A body-clipped horse is easier to groom and cool off after winter exercise, but he’ll need blankets a to avoid getting cold after he has been clipped To decide whether to clip, think about how much work you plan to do in the winter months. If you plan to have a break and just keep your horse in light work, clipping might not be necessary. If you have goals for the winter and want to have your horse in full work and attend competitions, you should consider giving your horse a full body clip. You’ll find that your clipped horse is easier to maintain, a horse with a long coat will sweat up quicker when worked and will take a long time to dry. Also, a wet coat won’t insulate effectively, and if your horse is soaked through with perspiration, a blanket won’t help keep him warm, you would need to dry him completely before rugging. A clipped horse will dry quickly and be ready for rugging immediately thereafter. For full-body clipping, you’ll need large shearing clippers as well as small clippers. The small ones are for the face, ears, and small body parts and areas. It is very important that your horse has been thoroughly washed to remove all
RUG FITTING TIPS It’s important to get the correct fit when buying a rug for your horse. A badly fitting rug will not only be uncomfortable for your horse but can cause shoulder rubbing or injury. Most horse rugs are measured in feet and inches eg: 5ft 9. To find your horse’s size, measure with a flexible tape from the center of your horse’s chest along his side to the point of the buttocks where the cheek meets the tail. This will be his true size

dirt from the coat so as not to blunt the blades on the clippers. It also makes it easier for the clippers to glide through the coat giving a smooth finish. Often a freshly clipped horse can feel a bit itchy, so it's important to keep their coat & skin well-conditioned. You can do this using a variety of different products such as bath oil, conditioner, moisturising sprays and grooming which willimprove blood flow. Remember you horse will require extra rugs once he is clipped to keep him warm. If you think your horse will not tolerate being clipped, don’t get your self hurt, ask a professional to do it for you.

Joint condition and arthritis problems Poor joint condition and arthritis is very common and noticeable in performance horses. Increased inflammation in and around the joints, lameness or unevenness, a shuffling gait, ringbone, sidebone, navicular and tendonitis are all conditions associated with high impact, high performance, endurance and ageing of the joints. As the cold weather of winter sets in symptoms of these conditions will become more noticable. Treating your horse with a high quality supplement, is known to assist in many ways. Equine winter skin problems Some of the skin problems that can be a problem for your horse in winter are lice, mites or ringworm. Lice are mainly a winter problem as warmth and sunshine slow them down and a short coat does not provide a good environment for reproduction. Lice tend to thrive in cold weather and long coats Lice are tiny insects that spend their entire life cycle on the host. The eggs, are laid on the hairs next to the skin. Then there are three nymphal stages before the mature lice emerge to feed on the horse’s skin. Lice can be spread from one horse to another by direct contact or sharing tack, grooming tools, rugs, saddle cloths, etc. Lice from other animals such as cattle will not infest a horse, nor is there any danger of humans getting lice from horses. There are two basic kinds that infest horses: Hematopinus asini (sucking lice) and Damalinia (Bovicola) equi (biting lice). Sucking lice feed on the horse’s blood and in severe infestations can cause anemia due to extensive blood loss. Biting lice cause more skin irritation and itching as they feed on skin cells and secretions from oil glands in the skin. The horse may rub and bite at the affected areas, which may become hairless or raw. Those areas often have greasy skin and heavy dandruff. There are topical treatments available that can help eliminate lice. Follow label directions and treat the horse in an area where there’s no risk for contaminating feed or feeding areas. A second treatment two weeks later is needed to kill lice that hatch after the first treatment. Brushes, blankets, or equipment used on the infested horse also should be treated before being used again.

Mites are tiny parasites that sometimes bother horses, causing skin inflammation (dermatitis), dandruff and hair loss, tiny pustules or bloody crusts. The adults lay eggs, then the hatching nymphs burrow into the skin causing severe irritation and itchiness. Mites can be spread from horse to horse by direct contact or by bedding, saddle pads, grooming tools, etc. Leg mange is caused by a mite that lives in the long hair on the lower legs in winter, causing severe irritation and itchiness. The horse stomps his feet and rubs the backs of his hind pasterns on anything available and may resent having his feet handled. Eventually the skin may become swollen, scabby, cracked and greasy.
Mites are tiny parasites that cause skin inflammation and leg mange. Equine ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection of the skin which can spread rapidly from horse to horse, or from horse to human. The fungus sends out spores, which start new infections when rubbed into the skin. Incubation time for the various types of ringworm fungi can vary from as little as four days to as long as a month. If one horse in a group becomes infected, the fungus can spread to the rest, so take precautions to keep the other horses from getting it. Isolate an affected horse. Treat and disinfect saddle cloths, grooming tools, and anything else that might be used on more than one horse. Treat the affected horse. Some individuals seem more susceptible and get ringworm readily, while other individuals never do. Ringworm is most likely to appear in winter.
Ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection. Sunlight and heat inhibit the fungus. It is important to isolate affected horses kill the fungus and destroy the infective spores Your veterinarian should examine any itchy rashes on a horse and take skin scrapings to observe under a microscope for diagnosis. Mites and lice can be eliminated with several types of sprays and insecticides. The affected horses should be isolated so the problem won’t spread.
Thrush is a very common bacterial infection that occurs in the hoof, specifically in the region around the frog. The bacterium involved is Fusobacterium necrophorum, and occurs naturally in the environment in wet, muddy, or unsanitary conditions, such as an unclean stall and grows best with low oxygen. Symptoms The most obvious sign of thrush is usually the odor that occurs when picking out the feet. Additionally, the infected areas of the hoof will be black in color and will easily break or crumble when scraped with a hoof pick. Most horses do not become lame if infected with thrush. However, if left untreated, the bacteria may migrate deeper into the sensitive parts of the hoof and result in lameness. Treatment and prevention Treatment includes twice-daily picking of the feet and cleaning out the two collateral grooves and the central sulcus, scrubbing clean using a detergent or disinfectant and warm water, and coated with a commercial thrush-treatment product or iodine. For best results kept hooves dry and in a clean environment.

"flexes" the joints of the lower limb. The sheath is a sleeve that surrounds the tendon and enables the tendon to slide up and down. The sheath has a relatively tough outer case, and a "synovial" lining which has cells that secrete fluid which serves as a lubricant. The superficial and deep flexor tendons originate as muscles above the knee and the hock, become tendons at the level of these joints and passage down the back of the leg to attach to the pastern and pedal bones. Obviously at the level of the fetlock, they have to "go round a corner" to continue their progression. Most significantly, everyone has seen videos of horses in motion and can appreciate the tremendous range of motion the fetlock goes through, and in particular how low the back of the fetlock sinks at impact and weight bearing. Obviously this is going to put enormous tension and stress on the tendon structures. Nature has adapted to help protect the tendons by evolving a much thicker and stronger annular ligament structure around the back of the fetlock to help hold the tendons in place and support them as they are stretched. For the same reasons, the synovial sheath is also more thickened and reactive compared to sheaths in other areas of the horse. A very important feature to understand is that the synovial sheath is dynamic and very - m active. The fluid secreted, is not

Splints and windgalls are very common ailments that horses sustain. When owner's first see a swelling on their horse's lower leg, the initial reaction might be to panic - "Oh my god" - what is it, will it take ages to mend, will it cost me a fortune or potentially affect his future? Don't panic. Fortunately the very vast majority of windgalls are of little consequence, other than a cosmetic blemish and will have little effect on the performance of the horse. What are they? A windgall, (technically correct name being tendosynovitis), is swelling of the digital tendon sheath - a sterile fluid-filled sleeve covering the flexor tendons over the back of the fetlock joint. The flexor tendons themselves are extremely critical and sensitive structures and injury to them is serious. A tendon is a structure that starts as a muscle mass which has the ability to contract and transmit forces that move the object to which it is attached. Obviously the horse has very
just a "pool" of stagnant liquid. It is continually being turned over by secretion and absorption, and when all is in balance, the rate of secretion equals the rate of absorption and the normal appearance of the lower limb prevails. If however the rate of secretion increases and exceeds the absorption, extra and excess fluid accumulates and the sheath starts to swell. The rate of secretion increases whenever there is any inflammation in any of the integrated structures. When one appreciates the absolutely enormous forces and stresses applied to the back of the fetlock region by a 500kg animal travelling at often quite high speeds, it does not take much to cause damage or inflammation. Most often, the damage is relatively minor and is associated with vagaries in such thinks as the conformation and balance of the bones and joints, in particular hoof imbalances, and irregular surfaces that the horse invariably has to travel over. Often these deviations are relatively minor but over time, create "wear and tear" to the soft tissue structures, in particular the tendon sheath, and there is a progressive gradual increase in fluid production and an insidious increase in the size of the pouch, eventually resulting in noticeable "windgalls". They are the result of the way the horse moves and individuals are all different. Continued page 19

The Horse Report There are many factors to consider in treating windgalls  From page 18 Some horses are prone, others resistant, to the development of the most common windgall because of their biomechanics of movement. Almost all of these horses are not lame and the blemish is purely cosmetic. There are some more problematic situations that can occur. Damage to either of the tendons in any form will dramatically increase the inflammation resulting in very high volumes of fluid production. The tendon injury may cause lameness, as may the turgidity of the high pressure of the massive secretion in the tight sheath which in itself will cause lameness. A very common development is stretching and tearing of the previously mentioned annular ligament that traverses horizontally across the back of the fetlock. These can be very painful. The synovial sheath and the annular ligament are part and parcel of the same structure and so a lot of fluid is produced, and often the ligament swells and increases in sized, sometimes "pinching" the tendons causing more trouble. An even worse situation is infection in the synovial sheath, usually the result of a puncture wound, and these are devastating, and difficult to deal with requiring urgent veterinary attention. So, what do we do? Hopefully I have already explained the great majority of windgalls are a result of the way the horse uses the leg. Windgalls are very

rare in horses that live in the paddock and are never ridden. Things have to change, and there are usually a multitude of factors in the ecosystem around the use and movement of the horse. When I look at a horse for a client with a windgall, the most important part of the assessment is a detailed exploration of all the factors relating to the use of the horse. By far the most useful and common adjustment we can make is in the way the horse is trimmed and shod and almost always there are things we can change and adjust. Each horse is different but most changes will involve improving the balance of the foot, shortening the breakover, and increasing the heel support. The surface the horse works on is also very
important. Very hard surfaces are going to exacerbate the effects of the small imbalances that may be present. Equally, deep sand surfaces can be wrong as the deeper the surface, the more work the tendons have to do to achieve liftoff and breakover. There are so many factors to consider, it is impossible to cover. Suffice to say, everything must be assessed and adjustments considered. Medical therapy can be very useful as it can markedly reduce inflammation. Phenylbutazone, and other anti-inflammatories will all help. In particular, injection of cortisone into the sheath can be dramatic. Cortisone stops the local inflammation and virtually ceases the secretion, absorption continues and the sheath goes down. It is critical to realise that if the factors that caused the windgall in the first place remain, the inflammation will continue as soon as the drugs wear off. Every owner invariably wants to "drain" the fluid. This on its own is a complete waste as the fluid will instantly be re-secreted and the swelling return. Surgery can be very useful in those cases where there is damage to the tendon or annular ligament. Careful ultrasound examination is very important to attempt to determine what damage may be present, and if there appears to be a lot of sonographic change in the tendons and sheath, surgery is very important in removing damaged tissue and allowing healing.

Understanding oxalate poisoning Shifting or intermittent lameness, short striding and grumpy, distracted behaviour are all symptoms of oxalate poisoning. But help is at hand from a revolutionary new direction built on a recent study in Australia. What is Oxalate Poisoning? Oxalate Poisoning or the skeletal deformity known as Big Head in horses, has been known to be connected to the consumption of tropical grasses containing too much calcium oxalate traditionally believed to lead to calcium deficiency. The symptoms and assumed causes have been known for many years but the specific mechanisms involved have been poorly studied. A fresh study has highlighted the non-bone issues of this disease such as poor muscle function, intermittent lameness and difficult behaviour. And, using a revolutionary approach - Chelated calcium (which is completely different from traditional calcium supplements) - dramatic results are being achieved. However, trials held in 2013 clearly demonstrated that when supplemented with chelated cal-

cium, horses excreted calcium oxalate in their urine. This means the oxalate must have been absorbed. Therefore another explanation for why calcium oxalate causes these problems must be found. Studies on non-oxalate affected horses in Britain strongly suggest that there is a specific role for chelated calcium molecules in cells that use a system called "Calcium Signalling". In calcium signalling, calcium ions (derived from molecules like calcium carbonate) are used to switch a huge range of cells on. It has been assumed that
only this ionised calcium was active biologically. But this may not be the case. There is a rationale that chelated calcium also has a role and, perhaps to support that theory, there are channels inside cells that are specifically capable of managing chelated calcium molecules. Most of the problems that are seen in oxalate poisoning could be explained by an inability of cells to rapidly pump calcium out. This means that nerve cells fire for too long, muscles can't relax and hormones and neurotransmitters continue to be pro-
duced when not needed. Even sweat glands can be affected leading to excessive or inadequate sweat production. And these are the common nonskeletal symptoms shown by horses grazing these tropical grasses - especially after rain. Where traditional solutions often take 9-12 months - by which time the grass will have dried and oxalate levels fallen anyway - chelated calcium seems to produce dramatic improvements in bone structure, muscle, tendon and ligament function and behaviour in less than two months. The horse has evolved primarily as a grazing herbivore, consuming a diet based on roughage which is mostly grasses. al selection and adaptation takes millions of years and I believe it is necessary to look seriously at what we are currently feeding our horses today. Prehistoric dental researchers at the New York College of osteopathic medicine and the American Museum of Natural History completed a new study that suggests the evolutionary path of horse, as we know them today was influenced by the food available to their prehistoric ancestors. The evolution of the horse Equus ferus caballus, has occurred for approximately 55 to 60 million years, this is a very long time. The Equus became extinct in the new world (America) 10,000 years ago but continued in the old world and was domesticated in central Asia about 6000 years ago. These horses were probably like the present day Przwalski's wild horses. The evolutionary changes in equids may have been caused by intense weather changes. The areas where equids were
located may have become drier, developing grasslands and savannas. These ecological changes may have contributed to the variation of equids. They developed not only extended limbs but also rigid vertebral columns, which allow the horses to move fast and carefully. They also developed teeth with an increased capacity to grind grass, these high crowned teeth escalate the intricacy of the grinding surface and molarisation of premolars. The study looked at approximately 6 ½ thousand equids. Fossil horses representing 222 different populations of more than 70 extinct horse species, from 55 million years ago in North America to the extinction at the end of the last ice age. The researchers analysed the amount of tooth wear and later analysed their data alongside records of North American climate changes that would have shifted the diets from rainforest fruits and woody, leafy vegetation to the
more abrasive diets found in grasslands. Strikingly changes in the teeth of ancestral horses, which are closely related to modern horses, took place around 18 million years ago. Climate changes increased the spread of open grasslands which required the horse species to adapt to harsher vegetation, particularly grasses. Grasses contain silica, which is abrasive and causes increased tooth wear, due to this, horses developed longer, high crowned teeth. They also discovered that evolutionary changes in tooth anatomy lag the dietary changes by million years or more, this is highly significant. This study shows that diet change influences the evolution of the horse, so one would presume that how we feed our horses today will influence this process also. As humans we tend to change our horses diets in a more rapid way than climate changes ever did over those millions of years. If adaptation takes more than a million years, we must understand that we are creating problems in our horses when we are feeding diets that are low in roughage and high in concentrates. This practice causes less wear of the teeth. This clearly indicates the importance of feeding a high roughage diet must be at the top of our list. So, have we taken the wrong turn in the way we think about equine nutrition? Are we too obsessed with locating an individual culprit or do we suspect that a specific nutrient may be causing a health problem. Why won't my horse put on condition? Why is my horse to fat? It's no wonder that people are confused about what they should or shouldn't eat but it is also quite confusing for horse owners. There are so many options in the feed industry I have no doubt that one could possibly be very frustrated! Almost every day we hear of some nutritional breakthrough that may or may not assist your horse. But there is also a misunderstanding with what is a healthy weight for a horse and what is not, which is why we have a conditioning score to gauge the correct weight of horses. What really is the best way to feed your horse? I think in many ways there has been quite a lot of confusion created by marketing types of feeds as a healthy option for your horse, but I feel the most important aspect of feeding your horse is to focus on healthy habits. Having our focus on long-term health and well-being should be our number one priority. At the end of the day what we are looking to achieve is a long-term effect that will benefit our horse, reduce the risk of disease, increase immune function and support the horse's performance level. It doesn't matter what type horse you own or what type of discipline you compete in, or even if you are just pleasure riding, your horse requires a certain level of nutrients per day. Granted this will vary depending on the type of horse and the workload. At this point it's interesting to note that many horses may look well covered but may not be very healthy. Let's look at how the horse has evolved. The horse has evolved primarily as a grazing herbivore, consuming a diet based on roughage which is mostly grasses and even some trees and shrubs or other foliage to maintain their dietary requirements. The inclusion of these other types of nutrients will occur when there is a seasonal shortage of pasture. It is quite clear that dietary change has influenced the evolution of the horse and has allowed them to be a little bit more adaptable. But did you realise that this natur-

We also know that research has provided us with an amazing amount of scientific evidence to prove that modern day feeding may just be that culprit. Now is the time to make an informed decision about what you should feed your horse. Taking complete control of your horse's health and well-being is essential when we consider that the horses are 100% reliant on our decisions. They can't make choices on their own. We need to consider what is a suitable diet for our horse, what groups of nutrients does your horse require every day of its life to support long-term health? Have you ever said “he did it for no reason!” By TANJA KRAUS
Has your horse ever done something “for no reason”? This can be one of the greatest challenges for a horse owner, trainer or rider to overcome. When we decide that the horse has done something for no reason, we can alleviate any responsibility on us: - that we could have predicted or prevented an incident that occurred; - that we could have done something to prevent the behaviour; - that we had a 'hole' in our training program; - or any number of things. I read a post just the other day where someone was saying about a horse's poor behavior in the herd "he was just being a bully, he was doing it for no reason". I completely disagree. Horses are not by their very physiolog designed to do anything 'for no reason'. In fact, if the horse was 'wasting energy' (our interpretation) you can almost be certain that he was: - Either doing something he felt he needed to do to protect himself. - He was establishing placement in the herd hierarchy. - He was trying to instigate play (the play is training for fighting techniques), - He was overfed, had too much energy,

Horse of the Year Email: jazna@picmypony.com SHOW HORSE QLD HORSE OF THE YEAR This year the 2018 Equestrian Australian Show Horse Queensland Horse of the Year will be held over 3 days at Toowoomba Showgrounds from August 31 to September 2. They have a great program of events for both hunter and open horses, child’s classes, leading rein and rider classes with the winner and Runner up qualifying for the Prestigious Equestrian Australian Nationals held in Melbourne in December and the winner, runner up and third place qualifying for the 2019 Southern Cross Show horse Spectacular in Sydney on 12 -13 -14 April 2019. Both the Friday night and Saturday night will have feature events, Friday the EQ cups for Hunter and for open horses and Saturday night the feature event will be the Life after the track (LATT) final. The committee is working to make this show bigger and better than ever before and are working on some new things that they hope will attract large numbers this year. The Horse Report RPSBS QLD STATE SHOW NOW EXPANDED The RPSBS Qld State show for 2018 with be run over two days on October 27 and 28 at Queensland State Equestrain Centre at Caboolture. The new two day program will run in two rings to hopefully avoid class clashes with hunter in one ring and show ponies the other. Saturday will see a full Led and Ridden program, featuring RPSBS Youngstock, Riding Pony Show and Hunter Hacks, Leading Rein, First Ridden & Mini champion, Overheight Show Hacks and Hunters, The 20172018 Newcomer Final, Supreme Led and riddens, the Young Judges competition and an all new Working Hunter program. Sunday will have a great new program that includes Double Registered Riding Pony classses, Led and ridden champions and supremes. DAYBORO SHOW The 63rd Dayboro Show will be held on the 7th and 8th July at the Memorial Showgrounds, 3512 Mt Mee Road, Dayboro. The show offers a full ring program as well as trade displays and pavilion sections and side-show alley all weekend. Ring events will include Show Jumping, Hack and Rider Classes, Breed Classes, Ranch Sorting, Barrel Races, Team Penning. MT GRAVATT SHOW The 2018 Mt Gravatt Show will be held over the weekend of July 28 and 29. The show was awarded "Community Event of the Year 2016" by the Brisbane Lord Mayor in the Australia Day Awards. This year all the horse events, both ring events and showjumping will be held on the Saturday and is shaping up to offer competitors and spectators a great weekend. No sideshows or rides to contend with. There is a full program with a large variety of breed classes with several breeds being divided into Pure and Partbreds, Ridden Breed Classes, Rider and Hack Classes, Show Hunter Hacks, Western Ridden classes, Arabian Costume Class and a Miniature feature program with novelty events and performance. There will be garlands, trophies and sashes up for grabs for the huge aray of Supreme Awards on offer. these include Supreme Led Horse of the Show, Supreme Stallion of the Show, Supreme Mare of the Show, Supreme Gelding of the Show, Supreme Youngstock Exhibit of the Show, Supreme Rider of the Show, Supreme Novice Exhibit of the Show, Supreme Hack of the Show and Supreme Show Hunter Hack of the Show. The Horse Report MUDGEERABA SHOW The 90th Mudgeeraba Show is almost here - 23/24th June. This is a family event not to be missed with all the fun of the fair, along with a huge variety of exhibits that include cuddly miniature goats, curious sheep, gentle cows and an exciting and revised two days of equestrian events. Birds, poultry, camels and racing pigs, Mudgeeraba has them all. Woodchop events, community exhibits along with the wonderful arts and craft displayed in the pavilion too. Come and see what a farrier does? The Mudgeeraba Show has something for everyone - all age groups and interests. There will be great bands along with a huge variety of singers and entertainers. There will be buskers, magicians, dancers and the ever popular grand parade. Feature events at this year show will be the Dinkum Dinosaurs two old ducks cooking show and the fabulous Mr Fireworks and Laser Show. Music for all include the country music star Adam Brand, the legendary Chad Morgan along with a huge variety of entertainers many of whom have already released albums.
