FEI Endurance World Championships

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Longines FEI Endurance World Championships were held in Italy recently, seeing 31 nations contest both team and individual titles.

Australia was represented by Andrea LawsKing riding her horse Heathfield’s Bin Sadaqa (Chip Chase Sadaqa x Shah Dara), with the combination ultimately finishing in 24th place, from a total of 74 starters.

Andrea not only tackled a challenging 160km course, which saw 48 combinations retire prior to completion, she was only able to travel to Italy a few days prior to the competition due to Australia's strict border restrictions.

However, the close call didn't rattle Andrea who relished in the competition environment and enjoyed every moment of the experience.

“It was a superbly organised ride,” Andrea said. “It was a great track and was beautifully marked.

“Bin Sadaqa was bright eyed and forward moving all day and my crew was absolutely amazing.”

The impressive performance delivered by Andrea and Heathfield’s Bin Sadaqa at the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships shows both their resilience and resolve which is made even more impressive considering Andrea bred the bay gelding in 2007.

The venue for the Championships was San Rossore Racecourse, home of Italian racing, and the track consisted of 160km of stunning parkland in the magnificent Parco Naturale Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, one of the largest and most ancient nature parks in Tuscany.

Each combination had to navigate six loops of the course while also passing through six vets’ checks to ensure all horses were fit and healthy to continue.

Andrea is an experienced equestrian and has been riding endurance since 1993 completing 11,857 successful competition kilometres

Andrea had also been chosen to represent Australia in 2012 at the World Endurance Championships which were held at Euston Park, England but unfortunately an accident

prevented her from travelling. However, this time Andrea was not only able to compete but to also finish the Championships competitively against the world's best endurance riders.

Colt sells for $1 million at national sale A colt by I Am Invincible sold for record breaking $1 million at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

Leading Melbourne trainer Ciaron Maher, flanked by the stable's bloodstock manager Will Bourne, went to seven figures to secure the prized lot from the Gilgai Farm draft.

Catalogued as Lot 109, the colt is the first foal of the stakes winning Ocean Park mare Ocean Jewel and is a close relation to Gimcrack Stakes winner Catch Me. "I saw the horse on the farm and it's a farm I've had a lot of success with," Maher said.

"We were hoping we wouldn't have to go that high but with the yearling prices this year going up and up we thought it was a good opportunity.

"That was a yearling price but he was an absolute stand out - out of a good mare and by the right stallion.

"Hopefully he can develop into a good twoyear-old."

Rosemont Stud and bloodstock agent Justin Bahen teamed up to secure the top seller from the Shadwell Stud Australasia Unreserved Dispersal Sale of weanlings.

That partnership went to $700,000 to secure the Zoustar colt from Bulbula, consigned as lot 73.

"You've got to look in all the markets," Mithen said. "We're probably the end user for this colt.

"We bought the yearling half brother for $1.2 million and we've been holding our breath waiting (for this colt).

"The Snitzel (yearling) has broken in well and impressed the team and it's a great pedigree these Shadwell families don't become available except in these sort of extraordinary circumstances.

A colt by I Am Invincible sold for $1 million at the Magic Millions Weanling sale on the Gold Coast.

"We've got a great client of the farm who will race the horse with us - we're searching far and wide for these good colts and hopefully they can turn into stallions for our farm in Victoria."

The Shadwell Stud consignment of weanlings grossed $5.435 million for 20 lots sold at an average price of $271,750.

"It's been a fantastic day of trade," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"Obviously the Shadwell Stud Australasia Dispersal was a huge highlight.

"For an unreserved dispersal there was great bidding all the way through. There's an insatiable thirst for quality across the industry right now and that was evident through the dispersal and also across the day as a whole.

"We were confident that we had a group of

horses that buyers would want to get involved with and it's happened in droves here.

"To have an average well over $100,000, a gross of almost $18 million and a very healthy clearance rate of 84 per cent is fantastic."

The Green lipped mussel is, as the name suggests is a mussel with green lips.

It’s native to New Zealand and its ‘proper’ name is Perna Canaliculus.

The Green lipped mussel has become a popular substance that is being integrated into animal and equine joint supplements, to help support cartilage, bone and joints.

Some people also take green lipped mussel if they have arthritis or joint issues that cause inflammation.

So, how does it ‘work’?

Research varies depending on what you read, but green lipped mussel is high in omega 3 fatty acids which can support joint health and condition, as well as the heart, eyes, brain and skin.

They also contain minerals and other ingredients that can support joint health…but the key one in green lipped mussel seems to be omega 3.

And if this is combined with other joint supporting ingredients, like glucosamine and chondroitin, for example, you have a pretty impressive supplement!

Feeding tips for horses in winter

By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Even a small feeding or horse husbandry change can provide significant health benefits to your horse this winter.

Respiratory Problems Avoid feeding dusty or mouldy hay as these can exacerbate respiratory problems and cause digestive and toxicity issues.

Wherever possible it is best to provide feed at ground level so that the horse can eat with a natural posture (they were designed to graze from the ground).

Steaming or soaking hay for a few minutes can be useful for minimising dust. (If you are feeding an overweight or laminitic horse and wish to reduce the starch and sugar content of the hay, you need to soak hay for half an hour in hot water or one to four hours in cold water but beware of leaving it wet too long and growing mould).

Feeding to prevent diarrhea Accute (sudden, severe) diarrhea can be caused by bacterial or fungal toxins in mouldy hay, some pasture species or old or poorly stored grain; by feeding too much grain; by sudden changes in diet; or stress and use of painkillers.

Chronic (ongoing) diarrhea can be caused by sand in the digestive tract, intestinal worms or starch overload. If your vet is unable to diagnose the cause, try the following: - feed on a mat to limit sand intake; encourage drinking, implement a deworming program as advised by your vet; reduce starch and increase dietary fibre; try changing hay but make all feed changes gradually over three to four weeks.

Use probiotics and prebiotics, provide B group vitamins, including a high dose of B1 (thiamin). Toxin binders containing yeast cell walls or aluminosilicates are also worth a try especially if you suspect mould in your feed or mycotoxins in the pasture.

Keep up the water intake Some horses don't drink enough water during colder weather, which isn't good for their health. You can encourage drinking by always providing fresh clean water that is not too hot or too cold. Keeping water under

cover can help keep it clean and manage temperature fluctuations. Empty and clean the water trough every few days to avoid algae, bird droppings, dead insects and the like building up in the water. Feed approximately 10g of salt per 100 kg of horse bodyweight to encourage healthy levels of water intake. Remember to include the salt content of pre-mixed hard feeds when calculating how much to add.

A nice warm bran mash?

As humans we love the smell of a nice warm bran but we're not doing our horses any favours by feeding these occasionally because the hindgut microbes can't adapt for a once-a-week feed.

Make dietary changes very gradually (take two thew three weeks to introduce a new feed) and a few days to introduce a new supplement. In addition, bran has an inverted calcium to phosphorous ratio so if you do choose to feed it, make it part of a daily ration with added calcium to balance the mineral ratios correctly.

A nice warm stable?

Stabling and confinement increases the risk of ulcers, enteroliths and colic. Horses need frequent movement to be relaxed and for their gut to function properly. If you need to stable, ensure your horse never has an empty haynet. If you are stabling to keep a horse under lights for a show coat, consider an extra rug and letting him out of the stable when you turn the lights out.

Feed roughage for mental and physical health Many horses do not get enough roughage in our man-made environments. This is particularly true for horses kept in stables and small yards as well as during drought or winter if your pasture growth becomes very slow. Horses need to be able to eat hay, chaff or grass approximately 23 hours every day.

When they go without food for hours, horses become very stressed and unsettled leading to behavioural problems, ulcers, colic and bolting feed.

Omega 3 oil can assist immune system From page 10 Most horses need to eat a total of 2% of their bodyweight in dry matter.

Dry matter is the weight of a feed if you put it in the oven on low heat to dry out all the moisture it contains.

Fresh grass is low in dry matter and high in water (15 - 30% dry matter; 70 - 85% water) compared to hay (85% dry matter) and grain or pellets which are high in dry matter (90%) and low in water (10%).

So if you have a 500 kg horse, you need to provide 10 kg of dry matter from food.

This can mean as much as half to two thirds of a bale of grassy hay a day or free access to a large bale of hay when pasture is poor or not available.

Of course, if your horse is working hard and needs the extra energy provided by grain or pellets, less hay may be required but total intake can increase to 2.5% of bodyweight. (e.g. 2 kg pellets and 9.5 kg grassy hay to provide the 10 kg of dry matter necessary).

Boosting immunity Omega-3 oils help to prevent the formation of damaging free radicals in the body and stabilize the immune system so their inclusion in the feed can improve general health as well as improving joint and skin health, hoof quality and coat shine.

Omega-3 rich sources suitable for horses include green grass, algal meal, linseeds, chia seeds and fish oils.

The recommended feeding rate is 60 g of whole or freshly ground linseeds or 30 ml of stabilized linseed oil per 200 kg of bodyweight or approximately 2 ml of fish oil per 100 kg of bodyweight. Chia seeds are lower in omega-3 and need to be fed at about 30% higher than linseeds.

Marine-derived sources (algal and fish oils) have the advantage of providing the most active forms of omega-3: DHA and EPA. Omega-3 supplementation is particularly important when hay and grains form the majority of the diet, and access to omega-3 rich fresh grass is limited.

Selenium and Vitamin E work together as antioxidants to neutralize free radicals and strengthen the immune system.

When choosing a vitamin supplement, look for one high in Vitamin E because most horses are deficient in this vitamin.

Linseeds are a rich source of Omega 3 Oils

Even the freshest green grass often doesn't contain enough Vitamin E to meet horse requirements, especially for horses in regular work.

Vitamin C, which the horse can produce in its own body is also a powerful antioxidant but sick, aging or stressed horses may require more than the body can make.

Care must be taken to gradually introduce supplementary Vitamin C and wean the horse off it slowly when the extra dietary source is no longer required.

Many Australian soils are selenium deficient, so this mineral is often added to horse feeds.

Be careful not to double dose on selenium through different feed sources as this is one mineral where toxicity levels are relatively low.

A note of caution regarding garlic - although garlic is often promoted as being beneficial for horses, it contains allicin which is good for people but a known toxin to horses.

Garlic's antimicrobial action harms the beneficial microbes in the hindgut.

Feeding garlic long term can cause Heinz body anaemia leading to lowered endurance, energy level and immune function in horses.

Feeding a stable comfined horse

By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS Feeding a horse confined to a stable… it’s a balancing act… give them plenty of feed to keep them occupied but not so much you have them climbing them walls. Here is a little help on how to do it!

Horses are sometimes required to be confined due to illness or injury with no exercise allowed.

It’s certainly not ideal for a horse, but, with some diseases, injuries and surgeries it is critical that a horse does stay confined and calm for long periods of time.

As it does for so many things, nutrition… what you feed and how much, makes a very real difference to how well a horse will cope during confinement.

Horses will express the amount of calories they are being fed in their diet in their behaviour.

So if you feed them a lot of energy (calories) they will give you a lot of energy.

Which means feeding a confined horse needs to walk that fine line of enough calories to hold weight so that healing/recovery can occur but not so much that

behavior becomes a problem… either from your own safety perspective or for their own safety (the last thing you need an injured horse doing is climbing the walls of a box).

eat to keep them occupied and of course we need to keep the stomach full to lower the ever present risk of ulcers.

So it’s a classic catch 22 - how do we feed lots to keep them munching all day without exceeding their calorie requirement?

The answer is in low quality, low calorie hay - if you can find it.

Average quality grassy hay is perfect for these horses because it is low in calories, meaning they can eat a lot of it without blowing their calorie budget.

Plus it’s often stemmy and requires a lot of chewing, so it keeps them busy for long periods and makes them salivate a lot which is great for maintaining the health of their stomach.

And they don’t particularly like it, so they won’t eat it really quickly… a benefit in keeping them busy and preventing ulcers.

Of course you can’t just feed average quality grass hay, there would be deficiencies in the diet everywhere that would hinder recovery and general health.

Bruising in your horses hoof

By David Farmillo Bruising in the hoof wall is often unwittingly excused as selfinflicted injury. ‘Oh he must have stepped on a rock or something’ and ‘He was probably kicking the fence’. Yes these things do happen, but too often bruising is an indicator of hoof related problems leading to lameness.

We are all aware of the pain when we bend a fingernail back, plus it creates a visible blood line in the nail bed. If it hasn’t happened to you, try pressing your fingernail hard against the edge of the table. The same results happen when the toe of the hoof is too long, or if the heels are allowed to flare.

Bruising is not just in white hooved horses – the bruising is jusat not visible in a black hoof.

Bruising is almost always associated with the presence of flares, which cause the hoof wall to bend outwards and become distorted; this in turn stretches the laminae/white line area and results in a bend in the wall about half way up, so now the blood vessels feeding the sensi-

Bruises in those hoof wall – they are simply an indication that there is something going wrong tive laminae begin to rupture and it is this we are seeing as blood colour or bruising on the outer hoof wall.

Lameness occurs not so much because of this visual colour in the hoof wall but because of the flaring which caused it, so to correct this lameness we must first eliminate the flares. I know I sound like a record on replay sometimes, but we have to realize that the three main causes of lameness are: long toes/low heels, high heels/short toes, and the main one is the presence of

flares anywhere in the hoof.

I have so often heard the comment that it is impossible to get correct height clinches on these flared hooves as they’re always low (in fact you can even buy clinching tongs especially for low nails) but if we really look at these hooves we will see that the only problem is the flaring in the bottom of the hoof wall, and by controlling these flares we can now get correct height nail clinches as well as eliminating the lameness.

So lets not ignore the visible

bruises in those hoof wall – they are simply an indication that there is something going wrong with the current hoof maintenance.

The true art of farriery is to provide preventative maintenance, and to do that we must see and understand what we are looking at in the hoof.

The hoof is the blueprint to the behaviour and performance of the horse.

The horse with bruised hooves hates the farrier who generally only adds to its pain instead of resolving it.

When I arrive for my consultation, the horse is being worked hard in the arena, complete with saddle and owner on its back.

Then after it is washed down and is standing there exhausted and sad, I begin to explain to the owner about the flares and bruising present in all four hooves. It’s a really great horse as it turns out, it’s just in a lot of pain from poor hoof care The horse owner and the farrier both have a duty of care to the horse to know what is correct, so lets get it right, for the sake of the horse.

Diagnosing High Suspensory Disease

By DAVID LOVELL BVSC This follows on from the Diagnosis and Treatment article in last month’s issue.

High Suspensory Disease is one of the more common problems that we see in performance horses.

More significantly, it is regarded as one of the most difficult problems to treat and manage, and very often, signals the end of the career for the horse, certainly at the higher end of performance.

The reason it is so difficult to manage, is that the problem is caused by the biomechanics of the movement, or more simply, the way the horse uses its legs.

This movement is inherent in the horse and will always be a factor while ever the horse is being trained and ridden.

Therefore, it stands to reason that even if the original “tear” is one hundred percent healed, the same casual factors will again be applied and re-occurrence is very likely to occur. Therein lies the solution.

As Albert Einstein reportedly said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different outcome!” No where on earth is this adage more applicable and relevant than in the management of lameness in the

Our job as clinicians and managers is to understand the way damaged tissue heals and then to apply treatment modalities that are designed to enhance and aid nature’s natural mechanisms.

The reality is that there are no drugs that actually heal damaged tissue. Everyone is always looking for the magical miracle cure and quick fix, but there is no such thing.

There are many different drugs

Nerve blocks in themselves can be misleading and experience is necessary in their interpretation.

The greatest majority of all lameness will have originated somewhere in the foot, and so the lower leg has to be ruled out in the first instance.

We would normally perform a low block in the pastern, and then another at the level of the fetlock.

If the horse is still lame, then we need to perform what is called a “Low Four Point” block in the lower cannon.

This rules out the fetlock area.

Horse still lame - then we now perform a “High Four Point” block.

If this block is positive, then we can safely say that the lameness must be coming from somewhere in the area between the fetlock and the knee.

This would normally suggest that we either have a splint bone or a suspensory issue as these are the two most common injuries.

Clinical judgement and experience must then be applied to separate the two, but is usually not that difficult to differentiate.

We obviously radiograph and scan each case, but personally I will not accept a diagnosis of high suspensory without precise localising nerve blocks.

Once diagnosis is confirmed, we can now commence treatment. I would expect the program to take about three months.

Firstly, the horse is confined to a stall. As said earlier, it is the movement and action of the horse that causes the disease, so locking him up, immediately reduces the movement.

We then apply what is called a “Patten” which is a very high heeled shoe that projects out the back of the foot approximately 50 – 60cm. This shoe supports the heel and fetlock and is high enough to take the load off the suspensory. There is rarely any real significant inflammation or swelling in the damaged area and anti-inflammatory drugs usually have very little effect.

Localised injections of plasma into the area can be useful and may do that on two occasions.

Once that has settled down, we will usually utilise a course of three to four treatments with shock wave therapy which are designed to stimulate a healing response in the focal area of injury.

We feel that we have good results in settling down the lameness. The trick then is to return the horse to work applying a corrective shoe to support and stabilise the foot.

Each horse is different and shoeing must be tailored to the situation, but as a general rule, a wide rim egg bar shoe will achieve most of the aims.

available, and many of them have very specific uses but they must be used correctly and more importantly, in the context of being aimed at complementing the natural healing mechanisms that are already in place.

Hopefully we can all now appreciate that there are two elements to dealing with High Suspensory Disease in the horse, (the same applies to pretty well every injury). These are healing the damaged tissue and then taking steps to change the way the horse uses his leg so that the same casual factors are not going to occur.

That being said and realising that this disease is regarded as being one of the more difficult to manage, it seems fundamental that the most important element is in achieving a precise and exact diagnosis and High Suspensory Disease is very difficult to precisely diagnose.

This is primarily because that in the majority of cases, there are no definitive clinical signs. There are no swelling or obvious changes in the area.

A small percentage of cases will show unmistakable x-ray changes, but these are not common. Many people rely on ultrasound a as means of diagnosis, but in my experience, this is very often misleading as so called signs of suspensory tears in the area are more often artifacts as they can be seen in a large number of perfectly normal horses.

There is often some reaction to direct digital palpation in the area, but again this can be very misleading as each and every horse will react to some degree to squeezing the suspensory and so what does that mean?

In our hands, there are two key elements in diagnosis.

National Horse Traceability Working Group

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia are seeking an appropriately credentialed individual with the appropriate interest and skills to represent Equestrian Australia on the National Horse Traceability Working Group.

At the February 2020 Agriculture Minister’s Forum (AGMIN) meeting, Ministers endorsed a paper presented by Queensland and Victorian governments in relation to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee report, The Feasibility of a National Horse Traceability Register for all Horses (the report).

The AGMIN agenda paper recommended that the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (QDAF) and Agriculture Victoria work collaboratively to co-lead the development of the membership and establishment of the working group.

The report provided recommendations for the establish-

ment of a national working group to progress the development and implementation of a national horse traceability register that, at its core, serves a biosecurity function.

The organisations currently represented on the National Horse Traceability Working Group are: Animal Health Australia, Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment Harness Racing Australia,

Racing Australia, Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Australian Horse Industry Council, Equestrian Australia, State and Territory governments, Independent chair.

Since its inception in late 2020, the National Horse Traceability Working Group has been meeting regularly as

required with the intent to provide recommendations for the implementation of a national horse traceability register via AGSOC to AGMIN by late 2021 or early 2022.

Amanda joins the High Performance team at a time when increasing awareness surrounding athlete wellbeing is at the core of the program’s development initiatives.

The program has been working closely with the Australian Institute of Sport to prioritise a holistic approach in preparing athletes for not only success in the competition arena, but also a career with sustained longevity.

No stranger to the EA High Performance environment herself, Amanda has more than 20 years experience competing at elite level Eventing, including representing Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

EA Para-Equestrian Pathways Coordinator, Paralympian and World Equestrian Games bronze medallist Sharon Jarvis has been selected to be part of the inaugural AIS Accelerate Program, which aims to increase career pathway options in sport for women athletes.

The AIS Accelerate Program was launched this year to support women athletes and to progress their leadership skills in sport well beyond their athletic careers.

Minister for Sport, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck said: “These women have proudly

Hands, hackamores, bits a bridles.

By TANJA KRAUS It seems crazy to me that I would endeavor to write about such a controversial topic.

But then again when have I not!

I see a lot of (mis) information, particularly about the vaquero style of riding, horsemanship and specifically gear.

I'll put it right here lest the keyboard warriors get their knickers (panties for my American friends) in a twist (wad for my US friends).

I am not an expert in this field, though my partner is one, and I do consider myself an avid student, and I can make a pretty nice hackamore horse.

So this article is not so much about what you should and shouldn't be doing as much as it is an observation on attitudes, expectations, limitations and responsibilities.

Here in Australia, interest and riding using vaquero styles and gear is getting very popular, particularly the hackamore.

I ride the majority of my horses in a hackamore, and many of my students ride in the hackamore too.

A lot of the interest in the hack-

in this country, and many competitive sports are now accepting this equipment, they have transitioned to the hackamore.

I personally recommend the hackamore to my students wanting to ride 'bitless' as the feel and life offered by the hackamore is superior to that of a rope halter setup, or a bitless bridle.

I've heard some myths surrounding the hackamore, which is the primary purpose of this article.

Myth #1 The hackamore is designed to be hard.

No. Firstly, one of the hackamore’s purposes was to stay out of the horse’s mouth during primary teething years.

Secondly. The hackamore was developed in an era where nylon rope was not readily available and riders made their own gear.

The use of rawhide was simply due to available materials.

Third. Many reading this may bring up the topic of 'nerve knots' and yes, some hackamores are made with buttons or knots placed.

As with any equipment in our industry - some of it has design elements to cause discomfort, some doesn't. Shop wisely.

Myth #2. Leverage.

This is my favourite.

The hackamore does not have leverage. Due to the hangers’ attachment in the centre (or thereabouts) of the bosal, the hackamore reaches a point where no further pressure can be applied.

This happens quickly due to the action of the bosal on the nose.

The definition of leverage is the

exertion of force by a lever. If you want to see leverage refer to the mechanics of a shank bit (no I'm not anti bit).

Myth 3. You need skilled hands to ride in a hackamore Well this one is kind of true, but I'm going to correct it a little You need skilled hands to ride a horse.

You can inflict pain and discomfort riding in a halter, a hackamore, a snaffle or a bridle.

Don't kid yourself that 'I've got bad hands so bitless is kinder' anymore than 'I've got bad hands so I need to stay in the halter'.

If you've got bad hands - fix your damn hands!

Myth #4 My horse needs to be highly trained to ride in a hackamore.

If you have a horse you think will 'bolt' (for example) in the hackamore, then you have a horse you think will attempt to bolt in the snaffle - you just think you have a better chance of controlling or stopping him.

If you are still thinking in a 'control' mindset then you need to change your mindset.

When I start horses under saddle, I do their first couple of rides in a halter and one rein, after that they go in the hackamore.

In summary, if you are wanting to explore riding in a hackamore (or snaffle, or bridle), don't allow anyone to hold you back, but seek the guidance you need to move forward in the pursuit.

And as always, listen to the horse.

The Committee will carry out the following responsibilities: 1.1 Health & Safety Management (a) advise, formulate and recommend the strategic direction of EA’s health & safety program; (b) provide advice to the EA staff and personnel implementing the health & safety program; (c) general development of health & safety recommendations and policy to promote equestrian health & safety with particular reference to training, coaching, officiating, volunteering and competition; (d) ensure appropriate controls are in place to minimise the health & safety risks in equestrian sport including overseeing the health & safety program; (e) maintenance, revision and amendments of the EA General Regulations and Sport Discipline Rules; (f) preparation of EA’s submissions and responses to health & safety matters with the FEI, EA, State branches and members; and (g) consideration of submissions received from or to be provided to EA’s State Branches, clubs, members, industry and other bodies regarding equestrian health & safety.

The Committee must comprise of at least four members, including at least one Board member of EA and at least three independent expert members appointed by the Board.

Collectively the Committee members must have sufficient skills, knowledge and experience to ensure familiarity with the following: i. Health and safety as it relates to the delivery of community and elite level sport; ii. Developing and monitoring health & safety management frameworks; iii. Evaluating health & safety risk mitigation strategies and controls; iv. FEI and EA Regulations; v. Medical and veterinary practices; and vi. Equestrian Event Management operations.

Technyflex equine news from sponsored riders Supplied by TECHNYFLEX An update from Techmyflex - sposnored rider Victoria Davies-Koch May 2021: And that my friends is the last Tokyo qualifier in Australia done and dusted.

It was held at SIEC, Horsley Park in conjunction with the Sydney International Three-Day-Event.

Now we wait until the team is announced in a few weeks.

I was very excited leading up to this qualifier.

Celere and I have been under the guidance of the National Para coach and former Olympic Danish team rider Lone Jørgensen which has seen Celere and myself step up a level.

We were awarded FEI Grade II Champion with solid scores from the international visiting judge backed by positive comments from all, so we'll certainly be staying on this path with our training.

I couldn't do this without amazing support.

Lone did a brilliant job warming up Celere and me from start to finish and not leaving our side.

A huge thank you to Shae Herwig for getting Celere competition-ready each day and being a great supportive friend - being a High Performance groom isn't easy and I'm so thankful I have her on this crazy journey with me.

Gollan's Magic Duo Fly in Kingsford-Smith Cup A late charger and a brave frontrunner have outgunned some of the country's highest rated gallopers to provide trainer Tony Gollan with the quinella in the Group One $700,000 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

Just as star local Jim Byrne aboard reigning Magic Millions Snippets winner Jonker looked set to hold out his rivals, highly regarded stablemate Vega One stormed home for a famous stable one-two.

Superstar South Australian rider Jamie Kah was at her brilliant best, able to weave tight runs between challengers to get her charge home with a stunning late burst.

Vega One, who won last year's Magic Millions Cup on the Gold Coast, was finishing so fast he held a widening half length margin on the line.

"That is just so good," an excited Gollan said. "I'm just so proud of these horses.

"This horse had a major injury last year just after the Stradbroke and he had a long time in rehab.

"It's been a long range mission to get here and then into the Stradbroke with him. This doesn't get any better - this is great!

By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan.

We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better.

It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities.

Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area.

This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients.

This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-

engagement back into school or study.

Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with.

The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level.

(The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.)

The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses.

It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support.

Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included.

It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

Vega One is a son of star interna-

tional sire Lope de Vega and was bred on the famous paddocks of Emirates Park and sold on their behalf by Stockwell Thoroughbreds at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

Just a couple of weeks before Vega One was sold at the Morphettville auction, his half sister One More Honey won the Group Two Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Her trainer John Thompson was quick to snap up Vega One. After a handful of runs in New South Wales, the rising star was transferred to Queensland where he joined the Gollan stable and quickly made his mark as a horse to watch.

Four runs into his Queensland life he won at stakes level and in January last year he provided connections with a huge payday when winning the $1 million Magic Millions Cup. Vega One's dam One Funny Honey has been a great mare for Emirates Park after her purchase for $50,000 at the Patinack Farm Complete Dispersal in 2014.

When Emirates purchased One Funny Honey she had One More Honey at foot and the subsequent Group Two winner's first foal, a colt by Not a Single Doubt, sold for $1.8 million at January's 2021 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Boyd Exell wins at CAI3* Kronenberg Supplied by EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA World Champion Boyd Exell returned to the FEI Driving arena taking part in the CAI3* Kronenberg in the Netherlands, the first Western European FEI Driving competition to be held this year.

The competition also marked Boyd’s first FEI competition since 2020 when he claimed victory at CAI3* Lahden in Germany and the team evidently has not lost their competitive edge.

Boyd and his impressive team not only won the dressage phase of the three day competition at Kronenberg, they also claimed the overall four-in-hand title against some of the world’s best drivers displaying a strong start to the European Driving season.

After a stunning dressage test scoring 30.86 the team went on to finish on a final score of 128.54, more than 5 points clear of second place.

"The boys are soaking up the evening sun after working hard on the weekend,” Boyd said.

Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start?

Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal.

We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months.

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis.

No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care.

WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer.

HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness.

EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime.

To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely.

Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it.

It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue.

Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back.

PONY CLUB CAMP & 2 GYMKHANA’S The Murwillumbah Pony Club will be holding two day camp on Thursday, Friday July 8 & 9 Instruction will be provided in show jumping, sporting, showriding, dressage, games, and Horsemanship.

Following the camp, there will be 2 Gymkhanas run back to back.

Murwillumbah Gymkhana on Saturday 10 and Alstonville Gymkhana on Sunday 11 The program offers something for riders of all ages and interests from the lead line under eight riders up to associates rider 17 yrs and under 26 yrs.

Events include dressage, best presented, hack, rider, pleasure and bareback classes, showjumping and sporting events.

The club operates out of the Murwillumbah Showgrounds and offers great facilities including stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members.

New members are welcome to join the club and join in the fun but riders from any club are welcome to come along.

Nominations are essential to attend both the gymkhana and camp.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
