Brumby documentary to premier in Byron The Man from Coxs River - a new Australian feature documentary will have its world premiere at The Byron Bay International Film Festival on Sunday, March 9. Directed by Russell Kilbey, the documentary follows the actions of a fiercely independent horseman and feral control National Parks Ranger who faces a near impossible mission to save a mob of doomed brumbies in an inaccessible wilderness. Along the way, can an understanding be achieved to see the world through each other's eyes? As the budgetary clock ticks, the film investigates wilderness management, heritage and the call of the wild, riding out on an adventure not seen since Banjo Patterson penned his immortal poem. Luke Carlon grew up taking tourists on horse trips along the Coxs River, a place his family has ridden since the 1820s. Everyone came to ride along this pristine valley for up to a week including the rich and famous. All that ended nearly 20 years when the river was declared a wilderness area, the business closed and Luke's father died. After a long history of difficult relations between the National Parks and the Carlons, a thoughtful National Parks Ranger, Chris Banffy has a problem he thinks Luke might be able to solve. A wiley mob of brumbies (wild horses) inhabit the Burragorang valley, a water catchment area sealed off to the general public for over 50 years. Classed as feral pests, National Parks head office needs Chris to remove the animals from Sydney's water supply without any of the outcry that has marred some previous control operations using shooters in helicopters. Unlike any other horse relocation program in Australia the only access to the trap-yards is either by helicopter or horseback. If Luke takes the job he will have to find the horses, get them in the trap then he'll have to break them in enough to lead them a bone crunching five km up to another set of yards with truck access. Can Luke prove himself to the ghosts of his past and lead the horses to safety and a new home with out injuring them or his crew of dedicated stockmen? Can Ranger Chris make Luke stick to the rules? Looking after your horse in cooler weather By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Australia has had a very dry summer. Pasture is limited in many areas, so it has been necessary to feed our horses a higher level than normal. Going into the winter months means we have to prepare our horses by altering our feed programs, changing the way we are rugging our horses and possibly altering our work programs. In some areas of Australia the level of feed has been excessively low due to the dry summer and very low rainfall. We have spent a great deal of time assisting these horse owners in areas where feed has been depleted. High levels of roughage have been extremely important in this situation and continue to be important heading into the colder weather. Because the summer has been so dry there is less pasture around than in previous seasons particularly in the northern parts of Australia. As we have travelled around the country conducting seminars on equine nutrition, we have been told many stories of hardship and difficulties achieving good body condition with horses. With the colder weather our horses’ coats will begin to change adjusting to different circumstances ahead. Many horses are rugged during all months of the year, some horses are stabled and many other horses are not rugged or stabled. Depending on the situa-
tion your horses are located will affect how you will feed your horse in the cooler months. Fortunately we are not like some European winters where it can be freezing cold. For those horses that are used to being rugged, it is important to ensure that you begin using a warmer rug at night when the temperatures begins to drop, this will help to maintain a good body temperature. If your horses are out on pasture for 24 hours and are rugged, this will certainly provide some protection from rain, wind and cold temperatures. However your horse should still have access to windbreaks, shelter beneath trees or a box in the paddock. Make sure you assess your horse’s comfort level during the day if possible. For example is your horse shivering or does he appear to be too warm and is he sweating? You may need to change his rugs from time to time to ensure that none of the above occurs. Most importantly it is the nighttime that your horse will require further warmth, as temperatures around Australia, depending on the area, may drop considerably. It is very common for horses to lose weight at this time of the year. Sometimes the winter coat appears to give more coverage and can be a bit deceiving. Assessing your horse’s body condition throughout the cooler months is essential. Don’t wait for the horse’s body condition to drop too low for you do something about it. It is very common for horses to lose condition in the cooler months no matter how high the body condition is during spring

and summer. You should still be able to feel the last three or four ribs through light pressure. If you need to apply more pressure to feel the ribs it is possible that your horse maybe a little overweight If there is a loss of body condition you need to increase the horse’s feed. This should begin by increasing the roughage component of the feed. It is also very important to check the amount of water that your horse is drinking on a daily basis if possible. If the water is cold this may discourage your horse from consuming a normal amount of water each day. If your horse does not consume a sufficient amount of water the
horse may become dehydrated and this could lead to colic. Always make sure that the water provided to your horse is kept clean, scrubbing out your water trough every 1 to 2 weeks is an ideal way to maintain this. During heavy rain falls in winter horses may ingest mud, dirt and other particles and therefore bacteria, particularly if water has been lying stagnant for a number of days. A good pro and prebiotic treatment is highly recommended should this occur. Feeding your horse the correct diet in the winter months is not difficult to achieve. Always remember that a high roughage diet is the most important part of the management of your horses feed program. Continued page 7

Time to start developing a winter horse management routine From page 6 Providing plenty of good quality hay is essential, this can be in the form of lucerne, oaten, or pasture hay providing it is good quality. Generally speaking our horses are worked less during the cooler months due to inclement weather, unless you are lucky to have an indoor arena. So bearing this in mind, many horse owners tend to turn the horse out during this time. This does not mean that you stop feeding your horse correctly and if you are using a daily supplement it would be advised to continue a low maintenance dose when your horse is turned out. By doing so, when you bring your horse back into work, he will be much better prepared. For those of you, like me, who will be continuing working their horses through the cooler months, feeding your horse will be based on the workload, the type of horse, sex of the horse and many other factors. A good high roughage pellet such as the Johnson’s natural

formula is one that I highly recommend. It is a clean feed with no additives or byproducts. This product is steamed and compressed and the quality of the hays and grains used in this pellet is grade one export. There is a feed to suit any purpose depending on your horse’s workload. For a horse working 4 & ½ hours per week, I will use my own horse as an example to provide you exactly what I would be feeding him during the winter months based on working these hours. Rotsi has four to five 45 minute sessions per week and he is a dressage horse. He receives in the morning 1 kg of the Johnson’s Afalfaplus and 1 kg of Elite and I include 1 topquality biscuit of oaten hay. At night he receives 1 ½ kg of Johnsons Alfalfaplus and 1 kg of Elite and 1 to 2 biscuits of oaten hay. The nutritional value of these feeds is exceptionally high due to the quality provided. I also use a good natural therapy daily supplement, a natural therapy joint supplement and a proand prebiotic. This diet is very simple but will ensure that he maintains good body condition, is able to per-
form his work and is easily adjusted if needed. Raffle to help Aussies go to Games in France Equestrian Australia and Pony Club Australia are combining to offer a unique way for clubs to support the Australian Equestrian Team heading to the 2014 World Equestrian Games in France. The WEG will run from August 23 to September 7 and the EA and PCA have, as part of their major raffle, a visit from members of Australia's team. Leading into WEG, Equestrian Australia is running a series of initiatives to raise money for Australian-based riders which are selected to attend the Games. A monster raffle offering everything from coaching sessions with elite squad riders, to signed memorabilia and VIP tickets to key sporting events, is one way that EA is calling on supporters of the sport to get behind the team. As part of this raffle, anyone who purchases a ticket online will be allocated a ‘horseshoe’ which, during checkout, can be allocated to the club of their choice. At the conclusion of the raffle,
the club which receives the most horseshoes will receive the visit from members of the Australian team. If your club registers for this competition, it will be in the running to host a training day involving members of the Australian Team for the 2014 WEG. Pinpoint the pain using acupuncture By NAOMI MILLER B Bus, Dip Eq Ac OM All riders want satisfaction but sometimes it plays hard to get. They want to be satisfied that they’ve done everything they can to make sure their horses are free from pain. However, it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether reluctance to perform a certain movement has physical or psychological causes. If a rider suspects their horse is in pain or discomfort, diagnosis by a veterinarian is essential. Acupuncture can be used as an adjunct in assessing and treating complaints that are subclinical or non-traditional, such as a horse that is lacking in impulsion or unwilling to change leads. It can also be useful in assessing horses that are not head-nodding lame but are presenting with vague back and hind limb problems that defy veterinary diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound and nerve blocks. Acupuncture can be defined as stimulation of specific predetermined points on the body to achieve a homeostatic or therapeutic effect. Acupuncture points are areas of skin that have increased electrical conductivity or decreased electrical resistance.
Acupuncture can be used to find where the pain is coming from as well as treating it.
The history of equine acupuncture dates back to 2000-3000 BC. Although no single theory developed by biomedicine can explain all of the effects of acupuncture, essentially it stimulates sensory receptors (e.g. touch, pressure) that stimulate sensory afferent nerves to send a signal through the central nervous system to the hypothalamic-pituitary system. This system then releases neurotransmitters or neurohormones and these have an effect on the body. Acupuncture treatment is based more on ‘where’ the pain is coming from rather than ‘what’ is causing it. When using acupuncture for assessment, syndromes are recognised: if a group of
points is sore when palpated, a predictable anatomical area is involved. Most abnormal issues in the body (inflammation, pain, decrease or increase in circulation, etc) are already mapped out by the central nervous system. This map is reflected onto the body surface through acupuncture channels or meridians. Palpating along these channels can reveal information about pain. Assessment is based on the level of sensitivity to palpation of points that have been found to correspond with specific conditions. For instance, there is a group of points that, if reactive, may indicate pain in the hip region. Causes of pain in this region include soft-tissue injuries around the sacropelvic and gluteal region, subluxation of sacroiliac and coxofemoral joints, and degenerate joint disease. Another group of points is likely to be reactive if a horse has problems with the hocks such as soft-tissue injuries, bog spavin, synovitis and bone-and-cartilage fragments. In one study, 350 working sports horses and racehorses were represented as serviceably sound, but 37% of the horses were lame, and 39% had reactive acupuncture points. Continued page 13

Acupuncture is a useful adjunct to veterinary care From page 12 Comparing the lame horses to the sound horses, 63% of the lame horses reacted abnormally to palpation of acupuncture points and 25% of the sound horses reacted abnormally. Therefore, reactive acupuncture points in the channels were frequently observed and had a close relationship to lameness and, by implication, a relationship to subclinical musculoskeletal pain. Muscle tension can also yield useful information. There are often trigger points or tight bands of muscle distant to the original problem. In human medicine, it has been found that secondary trigger points are frequently present in cases of chronic musculoskeletal pain. These points are found in horses as well. Standard patterns of trigger points may be present due to compensatory movement. For example, if there is a primary problem in the hock, the horse starts to compensate for the problem and then develops

specific patterns of trigger points in the back, neck and contralateral forelimb. A group of acupuncture points known as association points is particularly important in assessing and treating horses with acupuncture. These points are located lateral to the dorsal midline, between the longissimus and iliocostalis muscles. Sensitivity to palpation of an
association point may indicate issues located along the path of the channel relating to that point. For example, BL-25 is the association point for the large intestine channel. Because of the path of this channel, sensitivity to palpation of BL-25 may be present in cases of anterolateral forelimb lameness above the carpus or anteromedial lameness below the carpus. Reactivity to a specific association point may also indicate internal organ problems via a somatovisceral reflex. For example, if a horse has a cough lingering after a cold, it may show sensitivity to palpation of a point known as BL-13, which is ‘associated’ with the lungs. As well as helping to assess a horse, acupuncture may be used as an adjunctive therapy. With lameness, acupuncture is most useful for pain relief, normalization of circulation, myofascial contracture release and normalization of nerve function. Other conditions that may be helped by acupuncture include
chronic pain, laminitis, atrophy, paresis and myofascial pain. Acupuncture is also a useful treatment for chronic back pain in horses. Chronic back pain causes poor performance in horses performing many types of work. One study found that 75% of horses treated for back pain with acupuncture were able to perform at an acceptable level after five to eight treatments. Although acupuncture is useful in treating certain types of pain, prevention of illness and injury has always been central to its practice. Acupuncture can aid in preventing musculoskeletal pain in horses by helping to keep muscles supple and tendons and ligaments flexible. By helping to prevent, assess and treat painful conditions, acupuncture can be a useful adjunct to veterinary care. Developing a female friendly saddle FACT: 90% of riders are women. FACT: Saddles are constructed mostly for the male anatomy. So why, when the first is the latter that saddles seem to be constructed for the minority. The recognition of this fact was actually documented in one of the first articles on this topic, appearing in Equus magazine in 1989, written by Dr. Deb Bennett, Ph.D., entitled "Who's built best to ride?" In it Dr Deb Bennett states "The greatest horse cultures that the world has ever known, including the Comanches, Sioux and Crow... traditionally built different types of saddles for men and women. The different saddle designs reflected...the consistent differences in bony anatomy which exist between men and women." Peter Horobin spoke to The Horse Report about saddles and the newly reinvented Amazone saddle. “When I made the first Amazone back in 2003, I researched a into the male and women pelvic systems and how they can be affected when riding,” he said. The anatomy of a woman including their lower back, pelvis and thighs are constructed differently to a man. Men and women will tend to have different physical difficulties when learning to ride, and it follows that riding techniques which work for men don't always work for women; sometimes causing discomfort and harming women in certain areas. The hip sockets, lower back and seat bones of male and females function differently in the saddle. A man's anatomical construction makes sitting trot and sitting to canter easier for him than for a female rider. So since the majority of saddles are "male" saddles, it then seems that women are at a

disadvantage only due to their own physical attributes and by the features that need to be available that aren’t in a stock standard model of a saddle. Saddles are generally built wider in the crotch area and narrower in the seat, which suit a male pelvis but not a woman’s. A saddle for a woman needs to be narrow in the crotch area and wider in the seat. Peter went on to explain his findings. “ One question I get asked from clients is, ’If all of this is true then why can top female riders have the ability to win gold in a sad-
dle built for men?” Peter said. My answer to this is that, riders who are at that top level of competing can compensate these features with their talent. When it comes to position of the rider, it is easier for a man to rest the inner surface of his thigh flat against the saddle since the hip sockets face more to the front than in women. Women's thighbones tend to slant in from hips to knees. In a saddle built for women, the stirrup bars need to be placed differently to a saddle built for a man. “Taking these factors on board, I invented the Amazone - the first female friendly saddle,” he said. There are now many saddle models out in the market place, however not only do you need the correct saddle for the rider but you also need a saddle that FITS and can be adjusted with competency, knowledge and experience in saddle fitting and saddle manufacturing. Riders are becoming more astute when buying a saddle. They understand more about the horse’s anatomy, read more articles, see more shocking revelations and want to know more about saddles and saddle fitting. Dealing with irritating Queensland Itch By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic This is an extremely difficult condition to manage. It is impossible to ever "cure" the problem as insects are ubiquitous. The problem usually occurs during the summer months ranging from October through April - May, usually become most serious towards the latter part of the season. Co-incidentally, this is when bot fly and horse fly problems also appear. This coincides with the hottest humid part of the year and is worse in a year of unseasonal rainfall. As we move into a more equitable climatic situation the problem will reduce, although not disappear until well into winter. There are several factors to consider. There are three common types of insects. Sandflies, the true cause of Queensland Itch and the insects most likely to "crawl" under the rugs. Mosquitoes that are going to swarm, land, and bite locally. Both these insects are most active in the evening and early morning. Flies are the third and they are a problem during the day. They land and bite all over the body but particularly the legs. All three are a problem and a combination are usually involved, however my feeling is

that flies and mosquitos far exceed sandflies as a cause of distress to the horse. True signs of Queensland Itch usually include mane and tail rub. Local environmental conditions such as vegetation and water can have a major influence on insect populations and sometimes a subtle shift or change in paddocks can help. One of the immediate problems is the high
heat and humidity. This exacerbates the problem enormously as the horse is already uncomfortable. My feeling is that rugs possibly do not help as much as people think, particularly during the heat of the day as they sweat a lot under the rug, rug gets wet, and the local skin environment is immediately unfavourable. Repel Insects to aid in reducing Itch. From page 17 I would consider leaving horses unrugged in the main part of the day after the morning and before any evening insect activity. Obviously this must be monitored but it may help the horse become more comfortable. Admittedly flies will attack the body but they may not be that bad in the paddock during the day, particularly if there is breeze. Discretion must be observed. Obviously it is important to fully rug and cover the horse during insect activity times. Mosquitoes are a real problem and possibly the most common culprit. True sandfly problems usually result in more allergy type reactions. A second management change may be to consider putting the horse inside at night in a more closed stall. Acquisition and use of a high speed fan, either overhead or horizontal, will create a breeze to help discourage insects. Coils, and the ultrasonic "zappers" from the hardware are options to consider but I have no personal experience. Insecticides must be used. The options are Permethrins, Pyrethrins, and "tickicides". Permethrins such as the “Brute” and “Permoxin” are helpful. They must be applied more regularly and even once a day initially, spreading the application times with progress. These "soak" into the hair and are supposed to be residual but the time frame is a bit limited. They are relatively safe but use with discretion. Pyrethrins are the myriad short term applications available. We use “Muscoban” but there are many forms. They have a mixture of chemicals, including citronella which is a good repellent. must be applied, probably twice a day, once when putting out in paddock and again in evening to areas not covered with rugs. Buy in bulk and apply with a hand spray. The tickicides are of limited value and are more toxic. “Barricade” once a week will help as a spray. I have been disappointed with “Sumifly” which has been specifically recommended for this condition. Probably not the drug’s fault, just the overwhelming problem of fly numbers Medical drugs are always requested. Corticosteroids are the most useful and almost essential with true Queensland Itch. Injectable “Depomedrol”, which is a long acting formulation, is commonly used. Mixed responses and again limited more by the overwhelming numbers of insects rather than the drug. There are some limitations and risks, mainly a possibility of laminitis. Continued page 19 Page 18

There is no straight solution for Itch From page 18 Horses in heavy body condition are most at risk. Prednisolone granules are safer and could be used but my feeling is that unless really rubbing or acutely damaged areas occur, probably not necessary. Topical ointments, (“Prednoderm”), to raw or rubbed areas is a real help. When the horse has spreading and multiple areas of crusty dermatitis, we recommend shampooing with a chlorhexidine shampoo, (Chlorhex). Lather the horse, let stand for 15 - 20 minutes, and then wash off. Then spray with chloramine and let dry on. Injectable anti histamines are safe but of limited efficacy and have a very short duration. I feel Apple Cider Vinegar can help some horses. This is given twice daily in the feed. It changes the pH and character of the gut contents a little. This in turn is absorbed into the body fluids and may change the odour of the sweat thereby acting as a repellent. This is not proven but it does seem to help in some horses. There is no "answer". Understanding the problem is

Brumby spotting tour is breathtaking By ANNE WILSON It’s a Sunday morning, the sky is blue, a perfect day for the SEQ Brumby Association Inc brumby spotting tour. I arrive at the designated start point at 8.15am and meet the others also going on the tour. We are a mixed bunch, a mother and daughter, three middle aged girlfriends, an older couple, three travelling on their own, myself and Terry who is the president of the Association and our host for the day. There is a buzz of excitement as we drive through the picturesque Noosa hinterland to get to the forest where the brumbies live. Along the way, Terry informs us about the origins of brumbies in Australia, how they got their name, the difference between Walers and Brumbies and how the association came into being. Upon arrival at the forest, my first impression is how are we going to find any brumbies in this expansive 430sq km pine plantation. As we drive along the dirt forestry tracks everyone's eyes are keenly focussed out the windows, looking through the rows of the tall straight pine trees, trying to be the first to see a brumby. In the first half hour we spot a couple of emus, a huge wedge tailed eagle gliding high above us and a pig but no brumbies. I start to think we might not find any but then Terry turns onto a small track, we drive up a rise and around a corner and there they are - five of them grazing peacefully in a section of forest that has recently been harvested. There is a stallion, a mare and foal, a yearling and another mare, all bays. They aren't aware of our presence and so continue to graze, heads down. We quietly, containing our delight, get out our binoculars to get a better look and of course the cameras to get that elusive perfect photo. Whilst watching them Terry tells us about the Toolara brumbies, how they came to be here, their breeding rates, the average size of

the herds, what the bachelor stallions get up to, and the techniques the trapper, contracted by Forestry Plantation Queensland, would use to passively trap the herd. After a while we get back in the bus. I have totally lost my sense of direction, there are so many tracks throughout the plantation it’s amazing Terry doesn’t get lost. As we drive along we chat amongst ourselves, all about horses, of course. Our chatter stops abruptly and turns into gasps and oohs and aahs as directly in front of us, framed by the pines, are two stallions, heads arched- magnificent. They prance around each other, strike the ground hard and then rear. I’m in awe. As they come down from their rear they immediately turn and stare straight at us perfectly still nostrils flaring, they lift their heads, then spin on their hind quarters, tails up, and take off, disappearing into the thick pines, like they had never been there at all. We drive on and come to an expansively cleared area. In every direction there is a herd of brumbies, some of them are what could be a kilometre away, others are much closer. Terry decides this is a good spot to stop for lunch and we all agree, so we sit down, eat the delicious cold meat and salads with a glass of wine, and watch the brumbies interacting in their own environment. During lunch Terry explains that the brumbies in Toolara forest often get chased by motorbikes and 4WDs and thus have a tendency to run when a vehicle gets too close to them. Fortunately we are far enough away so as
not to be a threat to the brumbies around us, however that changes very quickly when we start packing up. Without thinking, one of us shakes the rug we’d been sitting on and the wind catches it making it billow. In unison the brumbies’ heads come up, mouths half full of grass they stop chewing, hears pricked in our direction, the stallion prances to the rear of his herd and the lead mare takes steps directly towards us with an intense stare not taking her eyes off us. She’s trying to work out what we are, whether we are a danger or not. She decides she doesn’t like us, snorts, spins and runs towards the cover of the trees with the others following, running as one. The sound of their pounding hoofs is incredible. Before they reach the trees which are quite a distance away, the all stop a couple of times, turn and look at us, and I gaze back at them thinking how stunning they look. After seeing approximately 35 brumbies we drive to the property where the brumbies are cared for and trained. Terry puts on a display showing us the techniques he uses to train the brumbies. We also say hello to GT, a proud, strong, yet surprisingly very gentle brumby stallion who comes up to us of his own accord. It’s great to see the brumbies close up, to actually touch them and learn how they are trained from being wild untouchable brumbies to willing horses able to be caught, brushed, led and ridden. It feels surreal as I step off the bus as only a few hours earlier I was in a pine forest surrounded by wild brumbies and now here I am back in suburbia. Seeing the brumbies was a unique experience and one I will never forget. The next SEQ Brumby Association brumby spotting fundraising tour is scheduled for Saturday, March 29. All about sugar beet By CLARE MACLEOD MSc RNutr Most horse owners have fed sugar beet at some time or another, but usually just as a succulent addition to their horse's dry winter feed. Sugar beet is a much-underused feedstuff for horses and it can do a whole lot more for your horse than simply dampen down his nuts or coarse mix. Technically speaking Sugar beet is a root vegetable that stores its energy as table sugar (sucrose) in it's swollen root, and it may weigh 1-2 kg and contain around 17 % sugar by the time it's harvested. It looks rather like an elongated swede or turnip in its fresh, unprocessed state. The vegetable is grown for its high content of sugar, which is extracted from the flesh, leaving the fibrous root pulp behind, which is used as animal feed. About 10 million tonnes of fresh beet are grown in the UK each year, with about 1.4 million tonnes of sugar and 750,000 tonnes of animal feed made from this. Much of this fibrous root pulp is mixed with molasses to increase its energy and palatability for stock, but fortunately - for horse owners - an unmolassed version is available. This unmolassed sugar beet, compared to other concentrate feeds, is high in fibre (20%), low in sugar (about 5%) and moderately high in energy for horses, being just a couple of megajoules lower than oats per kg of dry matter. Sugar beet pulp contains a high proportion of soluble fibre, mostly pectins, which means its fibre is more easily and quickly digested compared to that found in forage like hay. In addition to being a good source of fibre and energy, sugar beet has a better mineral balance than straight cereals, with much higher levels of calcium and lower levels of phosphorus. Molassed sugar beet (about 25% sugar and 15% fibre) is a useful feed for horses who require a substantial amount of dietary sugar e.g. sick or hard-working animals. The unmolassed version, however, is more useful because it can be fed to all horses, ponies and donkeys and can be fed in relatively high amounts. In scientific trials, researchers have shown no problems with feeding it at 25 % of the total diet e.g. 3 kg to a 500 kg horse, although in practice higher amounts appear to be safe to feed. Soaked sugar beet pulp is very low in fibre and energy per kg because four-fifths of it is water. So to get the full benefit of sugar beet as a 'concentrate' feed, it needs to be weighed/scooped out before soaking. Sugar beet products for horses The sugar beet pulp destined for the horse feed market tends to be pelleted after sugar extraction, although some is left as shreds. The benefit of the shreds over pellets is that they need only 12 hours soaking rather than 24. In the past few years, a more processed sugar beet product has become available,
which takes only about 10 minutes to soak before feeding. Speedi-Beet by British Horse Feeds was the first and now others are available. Speedi-Beet is made from unmolassed British sugar beet which undergoes a patented process, is micronised (a type of cooking) and then flaked. The process retains nutrients but increases the surface area to aid the rate of water absorption; hence making it quick-soak. Plain unmolassed pellets are also available nowadays, although they do require a 24 hour soak like the molassed version. Sugar beet is also used in commercial compound feeds (nuts and coarse mixes). Unmolassed sugar beet is an excellent healthy alternative to starchy grain-based concentrate feeds, and due to its high fibre and low starch level, it does not have the gut-disturbing potential of grain and grainbased feeds, and nor is it at all 'heating' (causing excess exuberance). It is well known that large meals of starchy grain-based feeds cause gut disturbance, and feeding more than about 3 kg per day of such feeds significantly increases the risk of colic in working horses. Research by nutrition experts at Edinburgh and Aberystwyth Universities about a decade ago showed that sugar beet pulp was a more nutritious feed for horses and ponies than previously believed, and led to the development (along with soya hulls) of 'high digestible fibre' feeds. Also in the last decade, researchers have showed no adverse results of replacing cereals with sugar beet in working horse diets, and one researcher showed positive results including higher muscle fuel (glycogen) levels and lowered muscle markers of intense work. In this study, oats were replaced with sugar beet pulp. Another researcher has recently shown a reduced hindgut acidifying effect of barley when fed with molassed sugar beet pulp. Feeding sugar beet to horses Like all horse feeds, sugar beet should be introduced gradually, and increased as necessary. It should be soaked prior to feeding because of the dry, compressed nature of the pulp. Unsoaked, there is a risk of choke due to the beet taking up moisture from saliva and swelling in the throat, or stomach expansion from the same.
As a winter succulent or mixer for supplements, both molassed or unmolassed beet can be used, and only a cupful or two of soaked beet - literally a sprinkle of dry beet is required. As an alternative to compound concentrate feed e.g. competition or conditioning mix/nuts, the unmolassed version should be used, and fed at a rate of at least 1 kg per meal. A multi-vitamin and mineral supplement powder or pelleted balancer - must also be fed, because sugar beet does not balance the mineral shortages in forages. Adding vegetable oil to this adds even more calories for thin or hard-working horses. For overweight horses and ponies, those prone to laminitis, tying up or with metabolic syndrome (all of whom require a lowsugar diet), the molassed version should be avoided. Sugar beet pulp is a versatile feed because it can be fed in small quantities to overweight horses as a mixer for a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement instead of chaff and in large quantities to a poor doer for weight gain, or a working horse for energy. In conclusion, it is a pity that sugar beet is mostly used in small quantities during winter, when it can form part of, or the sole concentrate ration when fed with forage. Research has shown that it is safe to feed up to 25% of the total diet, so around 3 kg per day to a 500 kg horse eating 9 kg of forage per day. Replacing some or all of a starchy-concentrate provides a higher fibre, lower starch and all in all, healthier meal for horses.

Confidence Is ......Trust By TANJA KRAUS Tanja Kraus Horsemanship I speak to a lot of people about their horses on a weekly basis, and one of the common things we talk about is a confidence issue. Often this issue is not about a particular 'action' by the horse the current owner has most of the time it is due to a previous fall (often off a different horse), or mostly, due to time off after having kids. It is a very common 'phenomenon' if you like and usually is not related to actually taking a break or having time away from riding, but nature stepping in, and kicking those mothering instincts into overdrive - you now have a higher need for self preservation, as you have little people that you need to take care of. I have seen this cause people to give up riding altogether. You may not be able to reclaim the confidence of your teen years soaring over the cross country jumps without a care, jumping on any horse offered, or racing your friends along the beach, but you can reclaim the confidence you need to enjoy your horse once again. In my opinion, confidence is a double sided coin - you need to be able to trust your horse, so you can go for a nice quiet ride, and he needs to be able to trust you so he can give you that ride. Taking a new approach to your horse, and building a set of skills and exercises that you can go through, to allow you the time to read your horses body language - and he yours, can help to establish a happy 'start' to a ride. Knowledge is power, and having the knowledge to read your horse, determine what he needs, execute the exercises and arrive at a good place will set you up for success and confidence.

What if you had the knowledge to run through a set of drills before riding which would allow you to read your horses attitude for that day ? Would that help you be more confident each ride ? If you found that your horse was a little boisterous on a particular day and you had the tools to help fix that, would that help ? I can give you the answer - and thats yes. And I can also tell you that your horse will be happier for it! Can you imagine what it is like for him to be a little fresh, and you arrive at the paddock for a ride, take a look at him, realize he is fresh, lunge him until he's sweaty, and then hop on and grip on for dear life - and here is your horse thinking 'geez, there must be something scary around here, because mum sure is hanging on tight today' - I better prance around to show her i've got the energy to run if she needs it, and Id better look around myself in case she doesn't see it coming. You're smiling right now because that is what happens! Trust is (as per the dictionary) a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something. You need to be able to trust your horse and he needs to be able to trust you! Lets look at those words - reliability - comes through repetition, training and consistency. Truth comes through consistency. Ability comes through training, and strength comes through repetition and consistency. If you knew what your horses reaction to something would be - you could trust him. If you knew what his reaction would be and you didn't like it you could train him to have a different reaction. If you have confidence issues when it comes to your horse or riding take the time to sit for a minute and really think about where the problem lies - has he done something ? Can it be trained out of him ? Does he lack confidence in you as a leader - can that be trained ? Is it you who needs some tools to help with your anxiety or fears ? Is it both of you ? Maybe its worth talking to a professional (counsellor, therapist etc). Some people may think that this is an extreme measure but I don't see a problem with it - If I have a problem with my car, I take it to a mechanic, because I don't know enough about cars - if i've got a problem with anxiety - then I need to talk to an expert in anxiety!

The Horse Report Humans and horses in harmony By JODIE KELVEY I established HorseHand in 2007 and wanted to build a place like a doorway into the equine world, where new people to horses could come through that door have experience people `hold their hand’ in the whole process of learning about horses and going on to purchasing their very own horse. It’s also a place where people can learn about their horses and if they want to go onto a particular discipline, they can do that here. In my eyes, a horse is a horse and the riding discipline is an art form of horsemanship. Having travelled around Australia, I have worked with different well-known trainers and believed there was a real need for somewhere that people could get general knowledge about horses rather than be pushed to a certain discipline. The main thing about a horse is that they don’t really care about how much you know until they know how much you care. We encourage people to work harder on themselves than they do on their horses. There is so much personal growth involved in becoming good with horses and your horsemanship is a reflection of that. Our property is set up as a paddock system where the horses are free to graze and play; where the horses are in their own natural environment and we find we have very little health issues. HorseHand boasts 112 acres of lush pasture which is sown to a top quality equine mix. We have two and half kilometres of river frontage a trail that stretches down to the Campaspe River with plenty of shade trees and excellent fencing. We also have excellent agistment packages with large paddocks and some with horse shelters. Our horses are very settled and for this reason, we don’t have any catching problems. In fact our

horses catch us at HorseHand, they are all eager to see us and very happy to cooperate and we encourage this with our young students . When a student comes to our property to learn about horses, they are learning to be a horse person and not just a rider. We want the rider to adapt themselves to the horse and over time we have proven this. We have had fantastic results with our students being able to change to different horses so there is not too much of a problem of horse and rider connecting. It’s all about meeting the horse where he/she is at and not where the handler is at! Once a horse or rider has completed their program of training at HorseHand, they leave here with confidence and a broad knowledge to help them approach any different circumstance or situation that may arise in their future life. Here at HorseHand we cover foundation training for any type of equine discipline as well as liberty and trick training. National centre offers course for horses The National Centre for Equine Education (NCEE) is a specialist training centre established by GOTAFE, one of Victoria’s largest regional TAFEinstitutes. The centre offers student and equine industry training services, incorporating the performance, breeding, health and racing sectors. The horse industry contributes billions of dollars to the Australian economy. NCEE courses are designed to provide an entry point into the equine workforce. The skills and knowledge gained are sought after in Australia and internationally. It offers scholarships for further experience and training, the most notable being with the Irish National Stud in Ireland. Students do their work placement in studs, stables and equine hospitals from southern Victoria through to the Hunter Valley in NSW. It doesn’t matter whether students have years of experience with horses, or none at all. NCEE trainers will talk to you about what you want and provide you with advice to help you get to where you want to be. The centre offers skills recognition, identifying areas you are already competent in through prior learning and on the job experience. That is tailored training to meet student needs and those of industry, whether for work or for pleasure. The NCEE is based at the new Rural Industries Campus at Wangaratta in north east Victoria and is less than 2km
from Wangaratta Racecourse with easy access for students for training. The Cranbourne office is located at the Cranbourne Racecourse and other trainers are located at Gembrook, Seymour and Shepparton. This enables students to participate in the day to day activities, with hands on learning opportunities to develop key skills and capabilities required when working with horses and people. Of course, on-line learning makes accessing your courses easy from where ever you are. First class facilities at the Wangaratta campus provide students with a safe and progressive environment to undertake their workshops. The under cover Olympic size indoor arena provides a riding venue of the highest quality and stud facilities include the stable complex, stallion barn, holding yards, round yard, loading ramp and specialist breeding area for serving, mare procedures and foaling down. Dan Steers on the Road to the Horse International 2014 Australian clinician, Dan Steers of Double Dan Horsemanship, was announced as the first competitor at Road to the Horse 2014. Steers will make his way to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington in the United States from March 14-16 to compete for the World Championship of Colt Starting title representing his homeland of Australia. Both Dan Steers and Dan James are all too familiar with the Road to the Horse phenomenon. Steers’ business partner, James, competed at Road to the Horse 2012 and 2013. James, as one half of the Australian team, took the World Championship title in 2012 by storm. Both years, Steers assisted James outside the round pen as Pen Wrangler. As the other half of Double Dan Horsemanship, Steers entertained crowds with his light-hearted humor and demonstrated his amazing talent performing in horsemanship demonstrations alongside James. Now, Steers leaves behind his position as wrangler to step into the Road to the Horse spotlight as a competitor. Steers received the personal invitation
from Road to the Horse owner and producer Tootie Bland. At the time of the call, Steers was competing at the Australian Stock Horse National Show in Tamworth with Double Image, an Australian Stock Horse stallion. “It is an honor to be invited to compete at Road to the Horse 2014,” he said. “Being able to share my passion for the horse with the thousands of fans at the Kentucky Horse Park is a once in a lifetime opportunity and being chosen to represent my country will be an unbelievable experience.” Steers will be joined by other invited competitors, Antoine Cloux from Switzerland and Jonathan Field from Canada and a wild card contestant, determined by a separate competition before the first round pen session at Road to the Horse 2014.
