Olympian backs Brisbane’s bold bid for 2028 Games Athens Olympian Rebel Morrow has thrown her support behind a potential bid for Brisbane to host the Olympic Games in 2028. Brisbane Lord Mayor Grahame Quirk raised the proposal and it's set to be discussed at the next Council of Mayors meeting this month. Ms Morrow said it would be a dream come true to represent her country at an Olympic Games held in her home state of Queensland. "I'm currently making a bid for the Rio Olympics in 2016, and if Brisbane has the Games in 2028‌. I'll be there! It would be amazing to compete against the world’s best riders on home soil," Ms Morrow said. She said the Olympics is an amazing experience. "Whether or not you're competing, the Olympic Games have a way of bringing people together and fostering community spirit, she said. "As an athlete it was indescribable buzz to compete in Athens, a high like no other. And even as a spectator at the Sydney Olympics Games, I remember everyone from the spectators and athletes, to people on the street being in a good mood. The Olympic bid for Brisbane also has the

"The Sydney Olympics did wonders for the sport of eventing, he said. “Not only did the Aussie team take the gold, which inspired riders around the world, but Australia was left with a world class facility at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Macedon Ranges council seeks public comment on planned equestrian centre The Macedon Ranges Shire Council conducted a feasibility study to investigate the possibility of building a state of the art equine centre capable of hosting world-class equine competitions and events in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria. The draft study has found that a centre of this calibre is possible and that draft feasibility study is now on public exhibition and the industry and its participants are invited to have a say by completing the online survey which can be accessed through the Macedon Ranges Shire Council website at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au Comments can also be shared on Facebook at facebook.com/macedonREIN and/or join the social media conversation by using the hashtag #macedonequinecentre. Facilities investigated include: a large indoor arena with a 5000 seat stadium; undercover warm up arenas; outdoor arenas; around 400 stables; yards; exhibition space; veterinary; education and entertainment facilities. The centre would be capable of hosting a whole range of competitions from equestrian (FEI) to western disciplines such as cutting, reining, campdrafting and breed shows; as well as offering educational opportunities. The centre would be a multi-purpose venue designed to facilitate a number of events concurrently and host horse sales, exhibitions, expos, entertainment and livestock shows.

Heal your horse with Flower Remedies Angela Davison was one of Australia's first female jockeys before hanging up her boots and vowing to give back to the horses who had given her such joy. She trained for four years to become a Medical Herbalist and had a mixed human/animal practice for many years before choosing to specialise in horses. Angela pioneered a unique hair assessment service which she integrated into her practice in 1992. This is a non-chemical method of discovery which uncovers the core issues in the individual horse's performance problems or illness/discomfort or imbalance. Once those core issues are understood a six week treatment plan of tailor made medical herbal and Flower Remedy mixtures is given to the horse. These mixtures facilitate a positive and permanent healing change within the body/mind continuum, rather than putting a band aid on the problem. Angela has been working with Flower Remedies for almost 30 years. These little known and understood powerhouses have the potential for huge healing

After 27 years' research and over 10,000 case studies, together with expert collaboration with some of Australia's top vets, trainers and owners, Angela has finally written the definitive guide to Flower Remedies for Horses, Pets and People - a simple, direct, easy to read book chock

full of case histories and brilliant illustrations to help you find the Flower Remedy to help you, your horse or other loved ones, two legged or four! Every stable, home and handbag should have a bottle of 'What a Shock!' - it relieves stress, alleviates fear, releases shock from the body in case of trauma or accident, and can be used to calm and settle fractious children, adults and jumpy horses, frightened dogs or other animals. Flower Remedies for Horses, Pets and People explains what flower remedies are, how you can easily make them at home, where to buy them and which remedy to use for which presenting symptom or lifelong habit or pattern. The book explains how to recognise what type of horse or human you belong to, how to recognise his or her emotional and psychological make-up and how to identify who will benefit from which remedy. Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad assists performance Leading the way in innovation, the Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad was designed to provide effective, easy to use, affordable massage therapy for all horses and ponies. The Equilibrium Therapy Massage Pad is now one of the most talked about products on the British Dressage Members Forum and the Horse & Hound forum. The massage therapy pad is clinically proven to promote relaxation, improve back flexibility and can help to increase stride length. Each massage session lasts for 30 minutes; it strokes, vibrates and oscillates, stimulating the muscles on the horse's back. The Equilibrium Therapy速 Massage Pad is lightweight, portable and easy to use. This massage pad covers the whole of the saddle area and extends back towards the loins, the soft, flexible pad moulds to the horse's shape, ensuring maximum benefit.

Massage helps enable the horse to perform to the best of his ability. Tension is one of the most common reasons for poor performance in all disciplines, and massage helps by promoting relaxation and increasing back flexibility. Massage helps reduce stiffness caused by injury, chronic conditions or strenuous work. It does this by improving the blood supply to the muscles. It also enhances relaxation, reducing heart rate throughout the massage.

The Therapy Massage Pad has three different modes (stroking, vibrating and pulsing) which it cycles through repeatedly in its 30 minute program, preventing muscles becoming numb to overly repetitive massage. In addition, there are three different settings: Low - To cool down after exercise Medium - To warm muscles prior to exercise High - To help alleviate back problems. The battery lasts for at least six sessions and recharges fully in eight hours, using the portable charger.

will critically evaluate all these factors and evolve an objective analysis of exactly how the lameness developed. We are now in a situation where we can commence remedial processes to achieve a successful outcome, by removing and correcting the factors that led to the horse becoming lame. Certainly a very large component of treatment must lie in adequate rest to allow time for damaged tissue to heal and various drug therapy combinations prescribed to help the natural healing powers gifted by nature, but neither of these removes the cause and if the horse resumes work in exactly the same way, it is inevitable that the lameness will recur. Management of the training methods and patterns of use of the horse are important, but ultimately, changing the way the horse loads the leg is the critical element in effecting a long term recovery and return to function.

lems in the foot is why owners presume it must be higher up. This is in spite of the fact that there is never any sign of any problems in the back, shoulder, or stifle either. It is simply much easier, and hopeful, to believe that some simple manipulation will fix the problem. Fortunately a large number of problems are relatively minor and the animal recovers but the majority of these were going to get better anyway. No success can ever be claimed without a proper diagnosis and any problem that lingers or is not corrected must be properly examined to achieve an exact knowledge of where the horse is actually lame, and allow a factual determination of what is causing the problem. This usually requires a combination of clinical examination, nerve blocks, radiographs and ultrasound. Experience in interpreting the findings of these investigations is usually an essential component in eventually achieving an outcome. This is where podiatry becomes an important factor in equine lameness. Once we have examined the horse and determined exactly where the horse is lame, and then objectively evaluated the site with x-rays and ultrasound to determine what sort of damage has been done, we can begin to understand what has caused the lameness. In by far the greater majority of horse lameness issues, concussion, repetitive strains and overloads are the culprit. Most often, this relates back to the horse’s conformation and bio-mechanics of how the horse uses and loads - m the limb. Experienced clinicians

equine lameness, needs some further explanation. In spite of a general perception amongst horse owners that most lameness issues must be in the shoulder or back and an initial rush for chiropractic intervention, the real facts are that at least 90% of equine lameness originates in the foot. The fact that most of the time there are no obvious signs of change or visual prob-

Lameness is the most common cause of loss of use in the performance horse world and nowhere is the adage “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always had” more applicable. Lameness is frustrating and the perception is that there is not a lot that can be done. This is very far from the truth as in by far the greater majority of situations, there is a lot that can be done to return the horse to function. The field of equine podiatry is rapidly being recognised around the world as being able to provide the most significant contribution to help for the lame horse. The term “podiatry” is often loosely bandied around and applied to many situations but in the medical sense, podiatry means “The science concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders, injuries, and anatomic defects of the foot”. The critical words in the definition are science, diagnosis and treatment. Podiatry, when applied to

X-ray analysis is crucial for proper diagnosis From page 10 In most cases, podiatry refers to “corrective shoeing”. In humans, podiatrists usually prescribe various alternative shoes and arch supports, based on their objective analysis. Traditionally farriers have been our equine podiatrists. They have been limited in their abilities by lack of a precise diagnosis and objective factual information as to what has caused the lameness. Most times, they have had to work on intuition and “gut feeling”. In today’s world, no lame horse should be shod without a

X-ray analysis of the horse’s foot and lower leg can be essential in correctly diagnosing lameness. proper diagnosis and x-ray analysis of the horse’s foot. The radiographs allow us to measure the exact parameters of the foot such as sole depth, break-over distance, and palmer angle and enable a shoe to be designed, constructed and applied to the foot to address the issues. Post shoeing radiographs are just as essential to record what has been achieved and monitor the outcomes. I do not wish to imply that all lameness can be cured. The horse represents an extremely

valuable commodity to any owner both in terms of purchase price and emotional attachment, but by far the biggest expense is the time and training input that occurs as the rider develops combinations with the horse and most often many years teaching skills schooling the horse to a desired level of performance. Lameness is devastating and the owner owes it to themselves, and the horse, to at least achieve a proper diagnosis from which an exact analysis of prognosis, treatment regimes, and management protocols. Herbs for ailments after the rain By CATHERINE BIRD* Country Park Animal Herbs With so many areas along the eastern seaboard, north western NSW and Queensland experiencing record rainfall, horses need some special support. If their paddocks have been affected by flood waters or if they are just saturated and muddy certain issues can arise. Depending on the amount of water and the length of time the water has covered the ground, will depend on what issues your horse may experience. Fortunately, a combination of the same herbs in different proportions can help most issues your horse may experience. These include clivers, rosehips, calendula, nettles, vervain, slippery elm, garlic or brewers yeast. Your 'after the rain' kit will not be limited to these herbs, however they will provide you with a good foundation to helping your horse. One of the first annoyances a horse will develop when there is too much water is greasy heel. The primary herb for this condition is clivers closely supported with rosehips. While your horse has greasy heel, you can give clivers and rosehips. If the skin develops scabs or infection then your approach will be adapted to these two herbs and calendula flowers. For those horses whose skin over their topline suffers rainscald, the same three herbs are your friends. However your ratio of feeding will need to be adapted if the skin is broken or damaged and depending on the severity of the scald. This combination will also assist the horse who has been injured by floating debris. If a wound has become infected then you would look at tweaking the ratio between these three herbs. If your horse is an itch sufferer and now dealing with rainscald on top of it, add nettles to the herb mix. For horses whose skin irritations stress them mentally, vervain is one of the more appropriate nervine herbs to support skin problems. While soothing the horses, vervain gently supports the liver and kidneys cleanse the skin. The nasty aspect of floods is if the hoof has been submerged in water for more than 36 hours.

Herbs can help to treat many rain ‘induced’ ailments in horses.

There is the prospect that laminitis will develop. Again clivers and rosehips will be herbs you rely upon and the most useful herb for the hoof is yarrow. The key to dealing with laminitis is little doses of herbs often to assist with gently flushing the body to assist the hoof to repair. In early stages of laminitis your emphasis in your ratio will be on the yarrow, clivers and rosehips. This combination will feed the hoof and with the yarrow, be anti inflammatory while it improves the circulation to the hoof. If your horse is suffering pain that is not managed with the yarrow, the additional herbal approach will vary depending on an assessment of the 'whole horse'. If you require the horse have pain relief recommended by your veterinarian, the yarrow, clivers and rosehips will not interfere and can still be given while you are managing your horse's recovery. Seedy toe is another hoof problem a horse owner can expect if their horse is vulnerable. With this sort of issue you start with the core hoof herbs clivers and rosehips in an equal ratio. Then add additional herbs if further support is needed. The additional herbs are likely to be at one part proportions, even if the clivers and rosehips are in larger proportions. After your horse may have consumed contaminated water or been exposed to bacteria that may have been washed over their pasture and then consumed, you can use a simple

herbal approach to gently clean the gut and restore its ability to uptake and utilise the contents of the feed. Slippery elm bark is a gentle demulcent that is reputed to draw unwanted toxins from the lower gut. This supported with calendula to further cleanse and rosehips to restore tone to the gut. In one or two feeds you can add slippery elm, rosehips and calendula flowers. With added moisture everywhere, mosquitoes and other biting bugs tend to be an issue. Traditionally garlic is given to make horse's blood less tasty to bugs. However, you do have to be careful with your use of garlic. If your horse is being treated with antibiotics or other medications for any infections, please do not give garlic during this time. The garlic and drugs actions are at odds with each other and set up an antagonistic response in the body, which if it goes on long enough, can have the garlic then create sensitivities. What you may find later, is your horse may develop skin or gut issues after longer use of the garlic. So keep the garlic aside through veterinary treatment and then use it when your horse is off medications and well on the path to recovery.

If your horse has a sensitive gut, you can use brewers yeast as an alternative to the garlic as it also changes the taste of your horse's blood to those biting insects. Topically, it is difficult to find repellents that keep bugs away more than a few minutes. But if you do have rainscald that attracts flies, you can apply calendula ointment to cover the area with a layer that will assist with the repair of the skin. If after the water begins to recede and you think your horse is not his usual self, using a combination of the above herbs will help him get back to being healthier and happier again. Keep your approach simple as that will give you flexibility as to how you adapt your approach and room to add another herb if your horse shows other signs of distress. After a traumatic experience such as the recent floods and continuous rain, give the herbs you choose for two to three months to help bring his wellbeing into a balance. * Catherine Bird – author of A Healthy Horse the Natural Way Copyright © Country Park Animal Herbs 2012 For correct dosage rates on the herbs mentioned in this article please contact Carol or Ruth at Country Park online at www.countrypark.com.au

Carlos Tabernaberri Clinic Well-known trainer, Carlos Tabernaberri is passionate at developing a horse through a good foundation and not through the force of a bit to make him look the part. He believes there are no problems in either the horse or rider, just a lack of communication, understanding and trust. That's why he uses this gentle method, whether introducing a horse to the saddle for the first time or correcting an existing behavioural problem. It ensures improved performance and versatility, regardless of your preferred discipline, age or experience level. Carlos will be covering a broad range of areas, both on the ground and under saddle in his upcoming Moggill clinics. Riders and horses of all ages, disciplines and levels are welcome. Very limited spaces with horses available and fencesitters are also welcome. For more information or to book a space please contact Nicole on 0414 320 974 or email firefly2376@yahoo.com.au

THE HORSE

THAT TALKS Did you know that horses talk? You only need to listen to the signs they show you to understand what they’re saying. They could talk to you by hanging the tongue out, getting the tongue over the bit or rolling the tongue back. These are all signs of bit pain and are their way of telling you. Those aren’t the only signs: many may chew, grind, grab or chomp on the bit because they are trying to hold the bit pressure off their tongue. Some will lean on the rein, hang on one rein bad, pull the reins through your hands, head toss, run through the bit, or bolt, while others will rear and buck to get rid of the pain or the rider at the end of the reins. Horses will open their mouth to give them more room, enabling them to roll their tongue back or hang it out to escape the bit pain. Others will rub their face on their leg or the rider at the end of the ride - this is them saying “Please get the bit out of my mouth! It has hurt me!” There is extensive research behind the Winning Tongue Plate Bit, and combined with input from leading trainers and riders the design of the bits has helped to overcome these problems. These riders have stated it’s like having power steering and the difference the WTP bit makes is comparable to wearing comfortable slippers all day instead of high heels.

Collection and Engagement - who, what, when, where, why and how ? By TANJA KRAUS In this issue, I would like to cover Collection and Engagement and some key aspects as part of training. Who All horses should be ridden in collection and engagement as a regular part of their training sessions. Collection and Engagement allow the horse to develop the muscles to carry their rider in an optimum way, increasing their longevity and fitness. Horses that are ridden out of shape (hollow back, on the forehand, etc) tend to break down earlier and develop issues such as arthritis in overused areas of their bodies. I often talk to pleasure riders who may ride only on trails or at the beach, who think because they are pleasure riding they have no need for collection or engagement in their horses. These horses may be doing longer rides and have a higher requirement for endurance and thus need to be collecting and engaging. What Collection and Engagement bantered around in coaches’ language, in the arenas and on the sidelines - but what are they ? Collection is the transfer of the weight to the hindquarters - the horse carrying himself on the hind and lifting the front end. Engagement is the hind leg/s stepping through and deep underneath the horse. Yes you can have one without the other. When Not all the time. Your horse needs time to warm up in each session without being pulled into or asked for collection and engagement. These skills take different muscles than the ones he is using while standing around in the stable or walking around in the paddock. Give him time to begin warming up his muscles before asking for collection and engagement. The time asking for this will vary depending on his fitness level in collection - these are muscles that need to be built, so

increase the amount of time you are asking him to hold a collection or engage, over a period of training sessions. I have heard of people not asking for collection or engagement or laterals for over two years of their horse’s basic training. At the start of his ridden career would be appropriate and whilst I would never ask a young horse to hold a collection, I introduce them to the concept of collection and engagement during the starting under saddle process, and then as they continue their training I would increase the amount collection and engagement drills during a session. Where Anywhere - Collection and Engagement does not have to be kept in the arena. In fact you will often find that it is easier to begin collection and engagement training on the trail, as the horse has a 'forward focus' and you can begin asking the horse to lift in front and transfer the weight to the hind (collection), and step through under deeply with the hind legs (engagement). Why To put it simply, longevity and long term physical health of our horses, but if you need more reason than this - your advance maneuvers are going to need collection and engagement spins, pirouettes, fly changes, half pass, shoulder in - the list goes on. All of these maneuvers become simple when our horses are collected and engaged. How There are many skills and drills we can use to begin to teach our horses collection and engagement. The first step is to find your forward. Collection and Engagement requires suspension in your horse’s gait, which some may call a 'slow down'. However you need to find your forward before you can slow it down, and before you can influence the horse’s weight and steps you need freedom of movement - so find your forward!

CHILD'S ROYAL SHOW HACK 15.3hh 12yo typey TB mare. Great conformation with 3 lovely paces. With her no fuss attitude and low work down requirements, Elle is the ultimate hack for a child, teenager or nervous adult, yet has the quality to be in a royal show line up. In her first season Elle was successfully shown at Northern NSW Hack Champs and QLD Newcomers in Led and Ridden for Runner Up and Top 5 placings. Elle has been only lightly shown in the past couple of years due to owners Uni commitments. She is currently handled and ridden by a 14yo beginner rider. Great to do anything with, shoe, float, clip (no twitch). Has previously been ridden on beaches, roads etc. Elle is regretfully offered for sale due to owners moving overseas for study. Would be an asset to any show, interschool or dressage home. Vet check welcome. Negotiable to right home. 0422 053 440

The Horse Report CRACKIN' CANCER - DAYBORO HORSE TRAIL RIDE There is no doubting the fact that cancer is becoming more and more prevalent. Most families in this country have felt the devastating effects of cancer, first hand, so much so, that we now find ourselves with our backs to the wall. It seems as though we have arrived at a point where we each have a moral obligation to participate in the war against this disgusting, debilitating disease. Thankfully, medical researchers are making inroads into earlier diagnosis, improved treatments and cures, however those medical researchers are in need of more funding. Funding that will allow them to continue to crack more of those elusive cancer codes. Crackin' Cancer has a well established working relationship with the Cancer Council and directs funds from our trail rides, into cancer research, via the Cancer Council. Crackin' Cancer's motto is "Research Is The Answer - Funding Is The Key". How true that is. The two annual weeklong horse trail rides to date, have been the Cumberland Horse Trail Riding Club/Crackin' Cancer ride, which was held at Scone, but has since been relocated to the Megalong Valley, in the Blue Mountains. The other being the Three Waters High Country Holidays trail ride at Glen Innes, which in October Crackin' Cancer has added an extra weeklong horse trail ride to their annual itinerary. That new trail ride will be at Dayboro, which is located in the lower Sunshine Coast hinterland north of Brisbane Crackin' Cancer, 2015 trail rides in order will be:

Riders will traverse the beautiful and versatile country of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Dayboro Showground, Dayboro, April 11 till April 18 Dayboro sits just north of Brisbane. Dayboro is a pleasant town. It somehow resembles those beautiful country towns of a bygone era. The rides will be in the vicinity of twenty five kilometres. Riders will traverse the beautiful and versatile country of the lower Sunshine Coast hinterland. The pleasantness and tranquillity being a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of urban life Official arrival dates for this ride will be Saturday, April 11thand the departure date, Saturday, April the 18th. Rides will take

place on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday will be a "lay day". The rides will average around twenty five kilometres. They will traverse the scenic countryside to the north west of the township. Some of the beautiful scenery encountered on the rides, will no doubt be appreciated by the riders. The cost to each rider will be $200 out of which each rider will receive a "Welcome Dinner" and a "Goodbye Dinner" For further information contact beverley.stanton@crackincancer.org.au or phone 0433 960 332 or visit www.crackincancer.org.au

Homeopathic tips re Hendra Vaccination By ANGELA DAVISON The Horse Herbalist There has been a lot of online controversy about Hendra Vaccinations and I offer this advice, in case you missed it on my Facebook page late last year: Quick Tips regarding the Hendra Vaccination . . . BEFORE vaccination: - Make sure your horse is in good general health. If you suspect they may at all under par then reschedule vaccination date. - Do not ever agree to giving your horse any other vaccination, such as strangles/tetanus at the same time, regardless who is advising you to do so. Do not drench or do your horse's teeth on the same day as vaccinating for Hendra. - Prior to any vaccinations I use homeopathic Thuja 30 and Vitamin C for three days before vaccination and three days afterwards. This should assist the body to counter any ill-effects and assist in the removal of residual toxins. It's cheap as chips and there are no contraindications. This has been used in this way for many years. I was given this by the renowned English homeopathic veterinarian George McLeod.

Give you horse the best chance of a pain and trouble free vaccination Dosage for Thuja 30 is one dose daily three days before and after with four heaped teaspoons of Vitamin C. Source it from your local homoeopath or order from me. AFTER vaccination: Give your horse a few days off after Hendra vaccination. There is a new product 'Spray Pain Away' which I have been formulating over the past few years. Our testers are calling it 'magic in a bottle' as

The simplicity of feeding your horse By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse’s digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. But seriously take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a supermarket shopping bag. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45L. We know quite a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract and it does seem a little bit out of whack. But in the wild as nature had intended, the horse will survive extremely well because he or she is not expected to ingest large amounts of feed at one time but rather is out grazing continually moving around stopping to rest when required, to drink and sleep. Roughage is undoubtedly the most important basis of the equine diet and horses really should consume approximately 1.5 to 3% of their body weight on a daily basis, it is recommended that at least half of horse’s diet should be roughage in the form of hay or pasture. The equine gastrointestinal system is easily upset and if sudden changes are made in the diet it can definitely increase the risk of colic and other digestive issues. So why don’t we take a closer look at how the equine digestive system functions? We will also find the link between the horse’s physiology and his daily nutritional intake. When a horse takes food into his mouth, whether it is grass, hay or grain this time is used to push the feed to the back of the mouth. The horse’s molars then grind the feed and this is where the enzymatic action begins, creating saliva which begins the process of digestion. Even at this point there is the beginning of a breakdown of starch. If you give your horse a handful of whole oats he would chew and grind this very quickly, once chewed the oats will have absorbed its

own weight in moisture. Hay on the other hand will absorb approximately four times its own weight. The food is then pushed by the tongue past the soft palate into the pharynx which is the opening to the oesophagus, this is a flexible tube that runs down the neck and into the stomach. There are a number of muscular contractions which push the food along. Because the contractions only move in one direction the feed only goes one-way. Only a small amount of digestion takes place in the stomach, there is a small microbial population which does assist with fermentation and a small amount of enzymatic action, however the food only remains for a short time in the stomach, approximately 15 minutes on average. It then makes its way to the small intestine so there is little time for much breakdown of food. Once the stomach is approximately 2/3 full it then starts to pass food into the small intestine this process continues as long as the horse is eating and by the time it reaches the small intestine it would have been liquefied by acids in the stomach. Even though the horse’s feed remains in the stomach for a brief time it does have quite a bearing on the horse’s health. The upper and inner portion of the stomach’s lining consists of non-glandular, squamous cell layers; these are very susceptible to hydrochloric acid which the stomach secretes. If there is food contained in the stomach at frequent intervals the acid in the stomach tends to be absorbed. However, horse’s fed only once or twice daily with large feeds have a much higher risk of

www.hiform.com.au Page 28

gastric ulcers and other digestive upsets. Roughage in the form of good quality hays or pasture does the best job of absorbing the stomach acids. So therefore horses on a high roughage diet have less risk of developing ulcers. From here we follow down to the small intestine which is a complicated tube hanging from the loin area by a membrane, shaped similar to a fan which is called the mesentery. The duodenum shaped like a U-turn, is the first part of the small intestine, this shape helps to prevent food been forced back into the stomach should the small intestine become distended. Most of the protein digestion takes place in the small intestine as does the absorption of amino acids; however some grains are processed more efficiently in the small intestine than roughage. The small intestine can hold up to 30% of the gastrointestinal tract’s capacity. Within the small intestine food is broken down by enzymes. Starch which has not already been digested by saliva is then converted into a simple sugar called maltose, other types of complex sugars and carbohydrates will then be broken down into a simple form of sugar to enable them to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. They are then transported in the blood and will eventually arrive at the liver which is the horse’s major chemical processing plant. Did you know that the liver is an amazing body organ being able to regenerate almost 75 to 85% of itself it is responsible for many functions within the body and this also includes the association with bowel function. The liver is capable of reorganising and sorting amino acids into protein and is able to bind water-soluble nutrients to their suitable transporters to enable them to be distributed throughout the body. The main location for the digestion and absorption of fats is the small intestine. Most humans and animals use the gallbladder secretions to assist with the breakdown of fats however the horse does not have a gallbladder which is another strange fact, horses however seem use diets containing 10 to 15% fat extremely efficiently in particular for energy and weight gain. Fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K are absorbed in the small intestine as are calcium some phosphorus and B group items . Continued page 29

The Horse Report

Understanding the equine digestive track From page 28 It takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half for food which is now liquefied to pass through the length of the small intestine. The ileum is the last part of the small intestine which then leads to the hindgut. This part is made up of the cecum, large (or ascending) colon, small colon, rectum and anus. This is where the hardest work is performed of the whole digestive process. Enzymes do not play the lead role here, due to the fact that the digestion in the hindgut is largely microbial. This is performed by a large population of billions of symbiotic bacteria, that very efficiently break down fibre into smaller components which are called volatile fatty acids. This allows absorption through the gut wall. This is a natural process and is also essential for a healthy digestive system. The cecum, is approximately 1.2 m long and has a capacity of around 30 L this plays a huge role in the first stage of hindgut digestion. The caecum is located high in the horses right flank and extends down and forward towards the diaphragm. Hard to digest molecules and plant fibres composed of cellulose and other molecules travel through the stomach and small intestine and are unaffected by enzymes. However when they reach the fermentation vat of the caecum that huge bacteria population makes short work of them, they are usually broken down within about five hours. The caecum has the ability to slow the passage of food to enable the microbes to perform their work. Partly digestive food then travels from the caecum to the large colon this is where the fermentation continues. It is almost 3.6 m in length and has an incredible volume of approximately 50 to 60 L this is approximately 38% of the gastrointestinal tract’s total capacity. It is in the large colon where food remains for the longest period of time approximately 36 to 48 hours. It has a construction that resembles a series of pouches and is capable of breaking down large volumes of fibrous material; however it can also become a risk factor if the pouches become distended trapping gas during a bout of colic. It is quite apparent that they are almost custom-made for twisting and strangulating their own tissues. The food then moves to the small colon once it has been fully processed which is approximately 3.6 m long, however it is a small diameter approximately 10 cm. Most of the nutrients have been absorbed by this time but whatever is left in the horse’s gut, the horse will be unable to digest. This part of the hindgut is used to reclaim excess moisture from the remaining material. Once the food leaves the small colon it has become solid again and has been formed into faecal balls. Approximately 36 to 72 hours after the horse first consumed his or her food this waste material is expelled as manure Because the horse’s gastrointestinal tract is very sensitive any change in the horse’s diet must be done slowly not quickly, the reason for this is that it can compromise the gut bacteria popula-

tion. If these bacteria start dying off there is an increased risk of colic and the horse would not be receiving the correct nutritional intake. We already know that the horse’s gastrointestinal tract must be treated with great respect. For those of you who have experienced a horse with colic you will know that it is a very distressing time for both the horse and the horse owner. So preventative measures are always the best option in the management of your horse’s health. There are other triggers that can create digestive upsets in horses; this can include feeding a horse a high carbohydrate diet that is lacking in roughage. For example feeding a horse a high grain diet, as is often the case with stabled horses and insufficient roughage might mean that the small intestine may not be able to process the feed efficiently prior to it reaching the hindgut. The possible end result could be that when carbohydrates reach the fermentation process in the caecum that there could be a lactic acid build up. A lactic acid build up can have an effect on hindgut pH level this can make it difficult for bacteria to survive. During this process there can be a release of endotoxins which can be very harmful for the horse. This can create a hostile environment and will put the horse at risk for colic or laminitis. Feeding small feeds often with plenty of roughage may well be a solution to this type of problem. I am often asked this question ‘what do I really need to feed my horse’? We need to remind ourselves that horses have evolved to eat only one way and that the anatomy and physiology has not changed. What has changed is man’s intervention producing different types of feeds that in many cases are not suitable to feed to our horses. The big commercial, moneymaking drive, using by-products in feeds because they are easy to access and cheap to purchase and can bulk up a feed. However these types of by-products are simply

not suitable to feed to horses. By-products will include bran, sugar beet, copra meal, soy hulls, whey powder and in some cases fish products. All of these products are not suitable to feed to your horse. Many of these products require soaking, these product tend to expand but most importantly it does not encourage that normal chewing and grinding process that we talked about at the point of the mouth. Horses are actually very simple to feed the most important rule to remember that they should consume around 1.5 to 3% of their own body weight in feed each day. At least half of this but preferably a lot more than half should be roughage. So what is does horse need? Your horse requires a well-balanced ration, one that you can alter and adjust when required and one that contains high-quality roughage, possibly some grains depending on the horse’s workload, fresh clean water, good quality pasture and good quality hay in particular when the pasture is poor. This is when round bales can be very beneficial and my favourite of all feeding alfalfa (Lucerne ). I love alfalfa because it is low in NSC and starch, it is also highly nutritious and really value for money. Best of all horses love it. Remember the key to a healthy horse is a good level of roughage this will maintain a healthy digestive system in the long-term. If you require any further nutritional advice or information, please do not hesitate to contact me via (03) 9775 6422 or my email antoinette@hiform.com.au You can also request technical data, certificate of analysis and specifications for all products including the horse feeds.
