Support sort for Dressage Champs Held from Friday 20 until Sunday 22 April 2018 it is a solid three days of dressage that attracts more than 200 competitors travelling regionally and nationally to compete. The Young Dressage Association Inc. was first established in 1974, with the loyal committee and members working very hard to establish a permanent ground at Bendick Murrell (between Young and Cowra NSW) & purposely developed the grounds for dressage. There are 6 sand arenas, a large sand warmup arena, parking area, plenty of shade, wash bays, lunging areas, a dedicated spectator’s area, permanent yards and stables, and camping facilities. Part of the Dressage NSW Regional Dressage Festival Series, the Championships are open to both members of the club & Equestrian Australia. The club is held in high esteem by both competitors and sponsors for being a highly organised & friendly event. To help run this event, we are looking for valued sponsors to come on board and offer cash and prizes. In return for your sponsorship, we offer all businesses: •promotion on our popular website and Facebook page •trade stall opportunities •banner and flyer placement • opportunity to provide items in rider packs •invitation to sponsors afternoon tea on Saturday •announcements on PA •networking and photo opportunities with committee, officials, competitors at presentation ceremonies during the event. This championship event receives media attention, with local radio, television networks, newspapers and equestrian magazines taking an interest. We offer several different sponsorship packages which are mentioned below. If you would like to be involved, please contact: Email: youngdressageassoc@gmail.com Phone: Amba McGoldrick on 0428 486 165

Pony Club NSW State Championships The first Pony Club NSW State Combined Championships for the year were held at the Hawkesbury Showground Clarendon over the Australia Day long weekend. Despite the warm conditions, four days of hotly contested Showriding and Dressage events ran from Thursday 25th - Sunday 28th January. Well over 200 riders took part in the Combined Championship from all over the State, with all judges very impressed with the level of presentation, sportsmanship and performance. Riders with the highest points in each championship were awarded with an Age Champion sash, trophy and wool trophy rug thanks to Horseland. The State Showriding Championships started things off on the Thursday and Friday with events including Rider, Hack, Hunter, Handler, Pony Club Mount and Bareback classes among others. Over the four rings, competition was extremely strong, making it a difficult task for judges Bruce Wright, Jenny Partridge, Rebecca Crosby and Kerrie Meek. At the completion of classes the overall Age Champion and Reserve Champion in each age division were announced during the unmounted presentation. In the Under 9 years, Madeleine Gaden from Dunedoo Pony Club in Zone 6 was the highest point scorer and declared the Age Champion, while Matilda Rae from Cobbitty Pony Club in Zone 10 was the Reserve Champion. Jett Newman from Hills District Pony Club was awarded the 9 & Under 11 Years Age Champion with Ella Fin from Robertson Pony Club in Zone 10 named as the Reserve Champion. The 11 & under 13 years Age group was the largest with 33 riders competing, at the conclusion of events it was Abbey Lonsdale from Salt Ash Pony Club in Zone 25 awarded the Age Champion and Ella Bourke from Matcham Valley in Zone 24 as the Reserve Champion. Molly Best from Rylstone Pony Club in Zone 6 was the highest point scorer in the 13 & under 15 years age group, taking home the Age Champion Sash, Rug and Trophy, with Molly Michell-Smith from Narrabri Pony Club in Zone 5 in the Reserve Champion spot. 15 & under 17 age group competitor Courtney Bowd from Glenorie Pony Club in Zone 26 was the one to beat being declared the Age Champion while Millie Coddington from Dubbo Pony Club in Zone 4 was the Reserve Champion. In the Associates group, Sarah Olsen was the highest point scoring competitor for the day, taking home four 1st placings and being named the Associate Age Champion, while Jessica Craythorn from Wingham Pony Club in Zone 9 was just behind for Reserve Champion. The overall Champion Zone for the State Showriding Championships was awarded to Zone 26 with riders Sarah Olsen, Courtney Bowd, Jett Newman and Tahlia Coleiro scoring the most points for their zone, while Zone 10 was declared the Fitness Check Presentation Award winners. The event continued with the State Dressage Championships on Saturday and Sunday, thanks to the support of Dressage NSW who generously allowed the use of their 3 sand arenas, while nearby Clubs provided another 3 portable dressage arenas in the grassed

In the Under 11 years Age Group Angelina Thompson from Woodlands Park Pony Club in Zone 26 took home the Age Champion, while Ella Fin from Robertson Pony Club in Zone 10 claimed her second Reserve Champion title for the event. The 11 & Under 13 years age group was the largest of the event with 44 riders competing in the Preliminary 1.2 and 1.3 tests. Charlotte Jacobson from Forbes Pony Club in Zone 11 was named the 11 & Under 13 years Age Champion with Emmersen Mitchell from Denman Pony Club in Zone 7 close behind to claim the Reserve Champion. The 13 & Under 15 years Age Champion was awarded to Chelsea Brown from Woodlands Park Pony Club in Zone 26, followed by Alexander Seppelt from Londonderry Pony Club in Zone 19 in the Reserve spot. Once again Zone 26 was named as the Champion Zone, with riders Chelsea Brown, Courtney Bowd, Sarah Olsen and Angelina Thompson the highest point scoring riders in their zone, while Zone 7 was awarded the Fitness Check Presentation Award. The next Combined State Championship for Pony Club NSW will be the 2018 State Sporting, Campdraft & Team Penning Championships at North Dorrigo Showgrounds from the 14th - 16th April. Holistic Medicine your equine toolbox
.
By TAMARA SHEAD Ridestrong Therapy
Much of the research surrounding Equine Biomechanics leads us to the discussion that in order to reduce the long term effects of injury, behavioural abnormalities and the ultimate break down, anyone training a horse should be aware of the signals a horse gives when they experience pain and fatigue and manage it effectively Knowing what your horse does to express pain is the first step in avoiding damage to the equine body. Some of the common signs therapists see in sore horses are dipping of their back as they transfer weight away from the muscle and onto the skeleton. Head tossing, chomping on the bit or resistance to rider aids. 'Bunny hopping' in canter, poor foot placement in movement and when standing, shifting weight, carrying the tail off to the side. The horse may have trouble maintaining the canter or picking up a correct lead. Some horses have dilation or constriction of the pupils or even squeeze their eyes shut. Horses hold tension in their jaw by clenching or grinding teeth. You may notice that your horse is completely avoiding work,
demonstrating a shorter temper or being aggressive. They may suddenly be girthy or want to buck and rear. They may be over sensitive to touch, restless or anxious. Some horses go off their feed and may loose condition when they are in severe pain. With the growing number of natural therapies available to clients today it is important to be able to make an informed decision about the therapist you are going to use. At Ridestrong we like to tell our clients to view the idea of Holistic Medicine as an equine toolbox. We fill the box with all the best tools that are
available to us for the job we need to do and this includes using conventional medicine. Therapists are not licensed to make a clinical diagnosis but they can work in partnership with your vet to create an appropriate wellness plan. A well-trained therapist will be looking at your horse while they stand and while they move. Always ensure that a qualified and knowledgeable person with adequate experience is working with your horse. Ask around, word of mouth is the most powerful way to find a therapist with proven results. Ridestrong offers highly qualified and experienced therapists who complete a thorough evaluation of your horse. Our services include Massage, Moxabustion, Cupping, Acupressure, Red Light Therapy, Stretching and Acupuncture for the price of a single session. Our treatments come with a follow up program and ongoing support. We expect that owners become active participants in the healing process in order to achieve lasting outcomes. Ticks can be deadly Everyone visiting or living around Australia's coastline and hinterland is (or should be) aware of the dangers of ticks, to themselves, kids and their animals. Ticks are dangerous and can kill people. They carry neurotoxins and can cause severe local and allergic responses as well as spread diseases like scrub typhus. The worst outcome of a tick bite is anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction which in susceptible people is potentially fatal. Most adult local horses have built up a resistance to ticks, but ticks can affect foals and young horses as well as immune-compromised older horses and miniature horses. The major symptoms in horses affected from paralysis tick infestation are weakness or wobbliness, breathing difficulties, falling or lying down, off their feed, or off-colour in any way.. A few years ago, specialist doctors that deal with tick bites and the problems they can cause started to recommend that ticks should be killed in place before removing. And the best way to do that was to freeze them. But how should you freeze a tick? There was no product especially designed to snap freeze ticks. "Peggy Douglass is the inventor of a new product that is just on the market. Trialling and testing various proto-types in the field was conducted on ticks that were on 'Runty' the (very big and very tame) Hereford steer belonging to Peggy's sister, Helen, herself a former vet and GP." "The idea was relatively simple but working through the regulatory aspects, then the commercial requirements like barcodes and packaging, then finding an Australian manufacturer and setting up a website, finding stockists - all were challenges," she says. The development process took several years and culminated in a pocket-sized solution, 'Tick Tox'. It's an aerosol can the size of a small deodorant tube. It kills ticks in place effectively and accurately. Tick Tox is now available at several local stockists. For more information visit www.ticktox.com.au
Tick Tox® "Freeze your ticks off " Tick Tox® is a small and smart aerosol product. Used as directed, Tick Tox® will kill an embedded tick instantly. One can of Tick Tox® is enough to kill more that 40 ticks. A must for your backpack and first aid kit.

Equine Dentisty By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP How often should my horse see the dentist? Horses six years and under should be seen by a dentist every six months. Before this age a horse undergoes a lot of dental changes through which problems can arise and regular check ups can help relieve any issues before they become problematic. Horses older than six years can usually be seen once a year. If regular dental work is maintained annually, problems can be reversed and prevented and the length and quality of life for a horse can be increased greatly. How do I know if my horse needs a dentist? If you can’t remember the last time your horse saw the dentist, or you’ve recently acquired a new horse, it’s recommended you get a

What’s so special about Rose-Hip Vital What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine so special and how does it compare to other rosehip products just about every day? The humble rosehip is a true superfood - a wholefood, a fruit, packed full of eight naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (Omegas 3, 6 and 9), antioxidants and flavonoids. Rosehips, one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C, are typically fed to horses as a feed supplement for immune system support and for a range of other health benefits including hoof health, improved circulation and digestive function to name but a few. So what makes Rose-Hip Vital so different to other rosehip products? The answer is simple - manufacturing processes, effectiveness and scientific research. Patented extraction and drying processes isolate and activate a fatty acid/galactolipid (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) which has powerful clinically proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. It is called active

compound GOPO®. GOPO® is unique to Rose-Hip Vital powder and rosehip products that do not contain GOPO® have not been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties The same patented manufacturing processes result in a bright orange powder containing a high concentration of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals found in carefully selected berries grown in Scandinavia. Backed by more than 30 scientific studies including nine clinical trials on people, dogs and horses, Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically
proven plant-based natural antiinflammatory and immune system support used to treat inflammation, maintain healthy joints, supplement nutrition and improve performance. And Rose-Hip Vital® Equine does not swab. So what are people using RoseHip Vital® Equine for? or exercise • Laminitis, navicular and ringbone • Maintain healthy joints/prevention of joint problems • Immune system support/general health and wellbeing • Coat quality, skin conditions and allergies including Qld Itch • Appetite stimulant • Performance: improved muscle condition, topline, suppleness, movement, jumping scope, agility and endurance without heating For further information visit www.rosehipvitalequine.com.au

horses with the itch, have an allergy of some sort and while ever the source of the allergy is present, the skin condition will persist. Itchy horses are a never-ending source of frustration and you will spend an enormous amount of time, effort, and money in trying to deal with it. Yes, most conditions can be managed, but is it worth it. Itchy horses continually rub and damage themselves, detracting from their attractive appearance and they cost you a fortune in damaged rugs and equipment. Be very wary if buying the horse in winter as this is the time of the year that insects are less common and many horses will improve in coat condition so this is when the vendor takes the opportunity to present the horse for sale.
Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse
(1) NEVER BUY A HORSE THAT IS LAME The "golden" rule, never, never, never, buy a horse that is lame. By lame, I mean clinically lame where it is obvious to anyone that the horse has a lameness problem. There is a difference, many horses have some problems but are not clinically lame, and in many situations, can be managed. You need expert advice as to whether these problems are acceptable and manageable and there are uses and places for most horses. Each different condition is situational and you need careful advice for these sorts of problems. There are only three future possibilities for a lame horse, it will stay the same, get better, or become worse. No one can know for sure. A horse that is obviously lame is useless. Where ever you are, you will be barred from using the horse. Do not pay for, or take possession, of a lame horse. If the horse is lame, and you still insist on pursuing acquisition, you must obtain a precise diagnosis and have it fully evaluated,
(3)NEVER BUY A HORSE THAT HAS BAD FEET Everyone has heard the adage, "No Foot, No Horse". This formula has become a truism for very good reason. Paying strict attention to the size, shape, and quality of a horse's feet is one of the "Big Three" important aspects for potential new horse owners to consider. Yes, nearly every foot problem can be managed, but why buy a problem. At best, it would require regular and expensive farriery.. How do you tell if the horse has bad feet? There is never an answer, and as always, professional and expert advice is essential. Sufficient to say that if you have any questions or doubts about the quality and condition of the horse's feet, be very wary of pursuing the horse.
(4)ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE HORSE AND RIDER "MATCH" By far, the most common mistake people make is to "mis-match" the horse and rider. It happens all the time and invariably ends in disaster. The most common scenario is to pair an inexperienced rider, (usually a younger child), with an inexperienced or untrained horse. There is no hope for success. The horse is certainly one of God's great creatures, but it also one of the most powerful. Horses love to be ridden and trained. They are, however, herd animals and must respond to a leader. In nature, it is the leader of the mob, in ridden situations, it is the rider. If the rider is confident and competent, and knows exactly what is required, then the horse responds magnificently and harmony prevails. However, if the rider is inexperienced, lacks confidence, and in particular, the ability to mentally dominate the horse, chaos is inevitable. The horse has no idea of what it is expected to do, becomes confused and frustrated, and, make no mistake, can become very dangerous. A true "schoolmaster" is one of the most valuable horses on the planet, and well worth a premium. Discussion of matching the horse and rider can go on forever and it is impossible to cover every possibility, suffice to say that it is by far the most important element in selection of a horse to purchase, and, as always, expert advice must be sought. continued page 15

The Horse Report
Research can help to prevent wasting time and money from page 14 (5)BUYING A HORSE, WHEN YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT. How much a horse is worth, is the subject of another section, however, one thing is for certain sure, the "cheapest" thing about any horse is what you pay for it. Horses are extremely expensive to keep and maintain and many people do not realise what the on costs of owning a horse are. Do not buy a horse and think it is an investment. The reality is, that you should only pay as much for a horse as you can realistically afford to lose. If your situation is such that you have a very strict budget before acquiring a horse, then you probably should not pursue the dream. This maybe a little harsh, but if you cannot afford to pay for expert advice at the time you are looking to buy, then in most probability, you won't be able to properly care for the horse once you own it and any value that was in the horse when you bought it, will quickly be lost. Again, many situations are manageable but be sure you talk to an experienced advisor before buying the horse. (6)ALWAYS VERIFY THE HORSE'S PERFORMANCE RECORD This is easily one of the simplest and most objective checks or pre purchase assessments that can be made but so often people take on trust what they are told. It was once said to me, "Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see", and this is very good advice. Take the opportunity to confirm and verify the horse's performance record. Do not take it as given what you may be told. How many times do I hear the statement, "The horse is training at medium level, but actually still competes at novice". This is delusional and certainly does not add any value to the horse. Of even more critical importance, is to verify what the horse has actually been doing in the three to six months prior to being offered for sale. The best endorsement or "warranty" that is available for a potential purchaser is to be able to confirm that the horse has actually been in full training and competition in the period immediately prior to purchase. Be particularly wary of the horse that has been spelling, or even worse, turned out in a paddock for an extended period. Almost always this is indicative of some problem, very often tractability or lameness. Be very cautious. (7)NEVER BUY AN OVER-PRICED HORSE What is a horse worth? The reality is that any particular horse is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. Unfortunately, the only objective valuation is what the animal is worth at the meatworks. Anything over this is a premium. Different people perceive "value" in many ways, but the cold hard facts are that there are only three, often very subjective, components to a horse's value: "Soundness", "Suitability", and "Training". Many horses are valued according to their performance record, and or, potential.
Poorly presented horses nearly always mean that the horse has some problem.
Obviously the performance record is objective, certainly can be verified and clearly demonstrates that the horse has been capable of achieving certain results, thereby adding some value, but nothing is ever that simple. (See section on "Buying a Champion"). Potential is valueless and do not be fooled into thinking anything else. What is potential, and who decides what it is worth. By far the majority of horses are sold on the basis of potential and they are grossly overpriced. Be particularly wary of horses from professional trainers or dealers. This is not meant to be disparaging to such people, many of them have been, and still are, long time personal friends of mine and are extremely talented, gifted, and professional. Many of these people acquire horses from various sources, give them some basic training, education, and preparation, and offer them for sale. These horses are being sold on "potential". Therefore, this immediately becomes an oxymoron. Buyers should be very aware that professional trainers only achieve success by competing with superior horses. Rest assured that if the trainer really thought the horse had real potential, then the horse would not be offered for sale. Placing a "real" value on soundness, suitability, and training is each a full subject on its own and full of an infinite number of variables. Once again, potential buyers must consult experts to make an assessment. (8)DO NOT TRY TO BUY A "CHAMPION" I have been very lucky and extremely fortunate to have spent a lifetime working with horses, and, during that time, have been blessed with having been able to have worked with some of the most successful trainers, riders, and horses in the industry, across most of the disciplines, including the racing and performance horse sectors. One cannot help but question what it is that
makes one particular individual more successful than another. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that at least 70 - 80% of the success of a particular horse/trainer combination comes from the superior horsemanship skills, competitive ability, and intuitive instincts of the trainer or rider. Yes, there are superior horses and champions, but a lot of "ordinary" and lesser horses can be made to look very good, and compete very successfully, by a professional horseman. Without a shadow of a doubt, the one skill that separates the better trainers from the next, is the ability to turn horses over. Arrival at the elite level in any discipline as a horse/rider combination, almost always comes from having been able to constantly try out large numbers of individuals. This means that they must be able to move horses on. One of the special requirements to be able to turn horses over, is the ability to be able to sell horses that, in the opinion of the trainer, have reached their potential, and make room for the next prospect. This horse, that is competing successfully, will obviously be expected to achieve a premium price. Aspiring purchasers of horses should well realise that they could well be lucky to even replicate a portion of the performance ability that the professional trainer has been able to coax from the horse. It is a rare situation that the new owner can reach the same level of performance, and even more unlikely that they will improve the horse. That is not to say that individuals should not carry on and purchase a horse if all their analysis and assessments indicate that the particular horse exactly suits their requirements. I am simply saying that a large number of the so called "lemons" that people buy are horses in this category. (9)DO NOT BUY A "SKINNY", OR POORLY PRESENTED, HORSE Purchase of a horse is a major responsibility, and an enormous ongoing expense. Always ensure that the horse you are buying has some value. If the vendor does not think enough of the horse to have it presented in prime condition, what are you really buying? They will always give you a variety of reasons as to why the horse is like it is. These may or may not be correct. Do not take the chance. Once you take possession of the horse, you are stuck with it. Poorly presented horses nearly always mean that the horse has some problem. This may be medical, or temperament, or managerial, or performance ability. Leave it and find another. Sentiment and "feeling sorry" for the horse are grand ideals, but be very certain that you are prepared for the responsibility to improve the horse's lot (10)CHECK ALL THE BASICS Always thoroughly review the basics. Be certain the horse is the correct height if you are going to show in measured classes. Check to see that the horse will load easily and travel comfortably. Avoid "scramblers" at all costs. Evaluate carefully for wind sucking, weaving, stall wetting , and other stable vices. Check registrations and identification.

Summer dust and how to manage it By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Dip. Nut. Š 2017 Although the Australian summer can provide a subtle change from the chilly winter days, the prolonged dry heat can turn those muddy paddocks into arid pens. This may be an aesthetic inconvenience or just a typical part of the Australian summer but beneath the surface it can pose a serious health risk not only to us but for our horses as well. Summer may officially have passed but the weather remains warm, even hot for some time yet. While respiratory diseases are multi-factorial, exposure to dust is well known as an environmental factor in the occurrence and of airway disease and complications. Many studies have shown the relevance of dust exposure in respiratory disease progression in horses. One study, published by the Research in Veterinary Science examined the variance of dust particles in stables throughout the seasons and found an increased level of mould and endotoxins in the summer months in the enclosed space. Clinical signs of dust inhalation can vary from reduced performance to chronic coughs and nasal discharge, like what we experience as humans. In unavoidable dusty situations such as barren regions of Australia or even just taking your horse to and from events, we believe in preventative measure is always beneficial in protecting the horse from potential damage. Our Breathe formula contains a high concentration of therapeutic herbs which have antitussive, anti-inflammatory, mucilaginous and antibacterial properties; these constituents line the respiratory tract and prevent damage and irritation from particle inhalation as well as binding to these particles and clearing them out of their system. So if you find your horse in these situations we highly recommend the use of Hi Form Breathe to protect your horse. As well as dusty paddocks, stable air and feed are other major contributors to chronic airway diseases in horses and humans, Page 16
Dust exposure, especially in warmer months, can lead to respiratory disease in horses. due to the levels of moulds and endotoxins in the dust. This is just exacerbated in summer as the moisture dries up and creates more airborne particles. But how do you feed without the dust? Lightly dampening the feed may work, however moving to a dust free feed is advisable. Such dust free feeds can be found in Hi Form Harry’s Choice range - they are all dust free. How is this possible? Well it is due to the elevated level of cold-compressed, organic oil in the feeds. Not only does it provide a high value nutritional component but it also binds all the components of the feed. Therefore, when you feed your horse their muzzles aren't engulfed in dust particles and they can eat and breathe
comfortably. What about the paddocks and stables? Manure that has been left out in the sun and heat for extensive periods of time can form into small particles and be blown into dust. Studies have found these particles are more readily absorbed into the respiratory tract due to their small size and more likely to contribute to disease due to the bacteria content. We suggest picking up manure which is in communal areas to prevent further dust formation. Good ventilation in barns and stables is vital to reduce the build-up of dust in an enclosed area. Ensuring barns and stables are constructed with good ventilation allowing for airflow will
reduce the growth of moulds and bacteria as well as allow airborne particles to leave the space. Hi Form’s Harry's Choice, named in honour of strong-willed jockey, Harry Coffey will battled Cystic Fibrosis, is proud to be supporting the CF Federation Australia. Allergic reactions in our equine friends Allergies in horses can be caused by many things, including feeds, shampoos and sprays, washing detergents, chemicals, pollens, skin contact with plants, and insect bites. Allergies can be minor and not really bother your horse at all and some reactions can be so severe that the horse may have trouble breathing. Some allergic reactions can cause excessive swelling local to the initial reaction site, or all over the body and consequently, your horse may be very uncomfortable. An allergic reaction may show the following symptoms: Lumps appearing on the neck and/or body Swelling - from insect bite Swelling - around the face Skin abrasions, swelling or lesions caused by rubbing irritated areas Wheezing, excessive coughing and sneezing Excessive fluid from the nostrils due to irritation of the airways Allergic reactions are caused by an overreaction of the immune system when what the body believes an ‘antigen’ is detected. An antigen (a disease carrying protein) is usually neutralised after the horse’s immune system reacts to the antigen’s presence and accordingly, mounts a defense against the perceived threat. It is normal for the body to release chemicals
Allergies can be very itchy and cause loss of hair to assist in neutralising antigens, and these chemicals induce the symptoms that we see which are actually designed to rid the body of the offending antigen in the first place. One of these chemicals is histamine - hence why the use anti-histamines to help to control allergic reactions. Lumps on your horse are usually insect bites and may appear as small, firm and itchy, and are not a serious problem unless there has been an allergic reaction to them. Apply a repellent regularly and an antiseptic cream and monitor the bites. They should go
down within a few days. If there is a severe allergic reaction to the bites, contact your vet. If the bumps are large, flat and puffy, they are most likely hives - for which the most common cause is a food allergy. Itchy skin can be due to a number of allergic reactions, particularly from insect bites or contact with certain types of plants. Depending on whether the skin is broken, cooling the area may help to soothe the itch. If the skin is broken or the horse is constantly rubbing, placing a weather appropriate rug on to cover his skin may help to ease the itch. Be sure to check and treat sores regularly to ensure they are healing and that they are not infected. Allergic reactions to injections can be very, very serious. Sometimes a small swelling may occur at the site of the injection, but that is generally due to the needle not being sterilise before the injection is given - either the site has not been swabbed and contaminants have been able to enter the injection site, or the needle was not sterile. This is not an allergic reaction. A small lump should subside by itself. True allergic reactions to injections and other medications are rare, and typically occur soon after the injection or medication has been administered. Anaphylaxis can occur if the horse is truly allergic to the drug, in which case immediate veterinary treatment is required.

Pastures for horses By DPI NSW A good pasture will meet the nutritional needs of most horses. However, the grazing habits of horses require that special consideration is given to the selection and management of the pasture. Because of the wide range of soils and rainfall in Australia, no single pasture species suits all horse properties Recent research has shown that high quality pastures can meet the feed requirements of horses. However, most horse establishments supplementary feed their horses because they are held in confined areas where they can be checked on a regular basis. Supplementary feeding also guarantees feed quality and quantity and counters seasonal fluctuations in pasture supply. Species or varieties do not define a high duality pasture. They are important but the management of the pasture is just as important. Grazing in the early vegetative stages, having a mix of legumes and grasses, applying adequate fertiliser, weed control and maintaining sufficient moisture will affect the quality and value of the pasture. A critical time of the year is July/August when mares heavily in foal have to eat pastures that are frost affected. Frost-affected kikuyu, paspalum and couch are adequate if clovers are in the pasture mix. High quality pasture is essential when a mare foals to ensure that the mare produces enough milk to support her rapidly growing foal. Also, it is important that the mare does not lose condition at this time because she will be mated for next year's foal. Horses have a different digestive system to cows and sheep. Cows and sheep have four stomachs, horses have one stomach and a well developed large intestine. This limits the digestion of low quality feed and increases grazing time for horses. As a general rule, a 500 kg horse will eat less than a 500 kg cow but a horse wastes more pasture. The stocking rate for horses is similar to that of cattle. • Horses are very selective in their grazing habits. They prefer certain pastures and crops and leave species that are unpalatable. These `weeds' can soon dominate more desirable species. Horses prefer short pastures to tall pastures. A paddock stocked with horses will have a short cropped `lawn area' where the horses graze and long rank areas where they defecate. Horses do not like to graze where there is horse manure. Thus, the `lawn area' becomes depleted of nutrients that are moved to areas where the horses prefer not to graze. Only in drought conditions or in overstocked paddocks will horses graze up to manure pats. • Management of pastures, especially the management of manure and application of fertiliser, requires special consideration. Rotation of paddocks is critical with horses. • Select pastures and crops suited to the area, then select from that list the pastures and crops that horses prefer. Suitable species for horse pastures * Prairie grass Prairie grass is very acceptable to horses. Prairie grass performs well on very fertile soils under favourable growing conditions. It will not persist under dry conditions. Some varieties have a longer growing season and are not as prone to go to seed as early as the naturalised strain of prairie grass which starts seeding in August/September. * Ryegrass Ryegrass is a lush, desirable, cool season pasture for horses. It requires high rainfall or irrigation, good soil fertility, and good grazing management to persist. * Phalaris Phalaris sown with white, red and sub clover and/or lucerne is quite acceptable for horses. It must be rotationally grazed to allow seedhead development in spring and good growth after autumn rains. * Fescue Fescue pastures are very acceptable to horses in the first year of growth. The plants tend to become tussocky and coarse and less acceptable to horses in later years. Fescues prefer moist areas. These areas are prone to damage by horses, making management difficult. Fescues and ryegrasses can contain endophytes. They are bred into ryegrass and fescue to improve the plants' tolerance to insects and to improve productivity. Endophytes can affect the acceptability of the pasture, ultimately affecting livestock performance. When selecting ryegrasses and fescues check the endophyte status. continued page 23 www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com - Ph 07 55909721 - mob 0413 733 294 - Email: cobakibob@bigpond.com

Tropical pastures require supplementation from page 22 * Cocksfoot Cocksfoot is more suited to high altitudes. It thrives in the tableland areas of NSW. Cocksfoot dominant pastures in South Africa have caused calcium deficiency in horses. * Kikuyu Kikuyu is the most common coastal NSW horse pasture because of its ability to persist. It contains an oxalate that inhibits the uptake of calcium. This deficiency can be overcome by supplementary feeding a calcium supplement (see below) or by overseeding ryegrass and clover into the kikuyu in autumn. * Couch grass Couch grass has often been regarded as a weed. It is very acceptable to horses, very hardy and capable of tolerating high stocking rates on poorer sandy soils. * Red clover Red clover has always been regarded as a most acceptable clover for horses because of its summer growth habit. Always select a low oestrogen variety as infertility has been reported in broodmares grazing high oestrogen varieties. * Subterranean clover Sub clover is a self-regenerating annual with winter spring growth habit. It is adapted to many horse areas. Horses readily accept subterranean clover. Some older varieties contain high oestrogen levels. * White clover White clovers are not readily accepted. In most cases horses prefer to graze other pasture species and weeds in the paddock. However, white clovers should be included in pasture mixes because they are widely adapted to coastal and milder inland areas. * Lucerne Lucerne is another popular legume for horses, more suited to non-coastal situations. To increase persistence and yield it is important that the plants are not overgrazed. Rotational grazing is especially important when managing lucerne as it allows the plant to build up energy reserves and to persist. Lucerne is susceptible to leaf spot
Horses grazing some tropical grasses for extended periods can suffer `Big Head’.
diseases. Mares grazing lucerne or eating lucerne hay with excessive leaf spot may have fertility problems. Calcium problems associated with pasture species The ideal calcium to phosphorus ratio for horses is 2:1. Most clovers and medics (including lucerne) have ratios in excess of 2:1. Most grasses have calcium to phosphorus ratios of 1:1. However, the lusher a grass is the lower the calcium to phosphorus ratio. In some cases the ratio may be 0.8:1. Pastures that are over-fertilised with effluent run-off and are very lush can be a problem. Including grasses, clovers and medics in the pasture mix will overcome this problem. Horses grazing some tropical grasses for extended periods can suffer `Big Head' disease or Osteodystrophia fibrosa. These grasses are buffel grass, green panic,
setaria, kikuyu, guinea grass, para grass, pangola grass and signal grass. The cause of the problem is a high level of oxalates. Calcium oxalate is insoluble and unavailable to the horse. There needs to be more calcium than oxalate in the pasture for the calcium to be available Mineral supplement mixtures that provide the required amount of calcium to phosphorus should be made available to horses grazing setaria, buffel and kikuyu pastures Rotational grazing is recommended for horses pastures. However, because horses have a pecking order that includes biting and kicking, many horse managers prefer to set stock paddocks with smaller numbers of horses which means that paddocks do not get a rest to recuperate. The rotation of pastures, in conjunction with a good parasite control program, will help to discourage parasites and diseases.

The Horse Report
Providing a safe start to learn about horses The Bonogin Valley Horse Retreat is located at Bonogin in the beautiful scenic Gold Coast Hinterland and only 30 minutes from the heart of the Gold Coast. Offering a unique "horse experience", the retreat is ideal for individuals, groups or families wanting an introduction to horses or those wanting to develop their confidence in a safe controlled environment. It's even a great for a half or full day out with lunch included. Don't be bored sitting on a horse on a trail ride, playing follow the leader, come and have an interactive horse experience in a personalised way with professional staff and at great value. Debbie Burgermeister, inspired by her parents and a wonderful life of growing up with horses on a farm, established the retreat more than 10 years ago. She wanted a venue that offered the balance between country and city living which provided a safe environment for people to learn about horses. Debbie is a horse riding coach with a difference. She has the ability to achieve development through strong attention to body technique drawing from both Western and English riding. Starting with pony club levels and moving into the showring and disciplines such as dressage, jumping, camp-drafting, barrel racing and polocrosse, Debbie can help achieve goals through focused and attentive coaching. Credited with an established riding school for more than 10 years, she has many coaching qualifications including Equestrian Australia coach; Cert III Sports Coaching Equestrian;/ NCAS Level 2 Coach with Australian Institute of Sport; Cert IV Trainer & Assessor; First Aid; Mental Health First Aid & Blue Card; Cert IV in
Debbie established the retreat over 10 years ago to offer a safe start to riding Small Business Management and Advanced Diploma of Customer Contact Management. Deb's life is now completely dedicated to her family, her horses and the charity that she and her husband Mark founded called Giddy Up Gold Coast. This is a not for profit venture aimed at the grassroots of the sport but also promoting the healing aspects of horses for the community. Giddy Up Gold Coast promotes development in confidence, non-verbal communication techniques and emotional control, developing mental and physical strength to handle life's challenges while experiencing the energy, love and freedom horses can provide. Aside from that, the programs offer an escape from technology and an opportunity to get back to nature to unplug and unwind.
Giddy Up Kids offers horse intro classes from six-years-old and private lesson options from three-years-old as well as Horse Play Days in the school holidays for seven-year-old and older. Through the classes and play days, children are introduced to the fundamentals of horse care, handling and horse riding balance. They are a fantastic way to start your horse experience with a low cost, slow paced classes. They offer so much to learn such as safety, communication, catch, tie lead, grooming, mount and dismount, horse parts, saddlery, rugging, hoof care, bandaging, feeding, balanced rider, leg aids and rein control. Through their Giddy Up Kids programs and the Horse Day Out - Ride and Relax programs, the Bonogin Valley Horse Retreat offers a truly unique horse experience for all ages which is both education and rewarding

NSW plans equine safety workshops The NSW Government will host a number of safety workshops across the state aimed at reducing horse-related injuries and fatalities among novice and beginner riders. Executive Director of SafeWork NSW, Peter Dunphy, said the NSW Code of Practice for managing risks when new or inexperienced riders or handlers interact with horses in the workplace (COP) had been in place since February 2017, and delivered the most comprehensive and legally enforceable practice document within the horse industry. “This is Australia’s first dedicated Code of Practice to assist employers and workers in the horse industry in reducing injuries and meeting their workplace safety responsibilities,” Mr Dunphy said. “Of the 133 fatalities in Australia between 2000 and 2014 – 42 of which were in NSW, 18 per cent involved people under the age of 20, which is why the code is aimed at novice riders. “One worker is hospitalised every day in Australia due to a horse-related injury. “And for every worker injured, 10 other people are hurt, often at workplaces like riding schools, equestrian centres and trail riding businesses. “And annual workers compensation claims in NSW just in the horse industry total about $5.3

million with the average claim around $7400. “SafeWork NSW is working hard to raise awareness of the COP, and is supporting the equine industry in applying it in the workplace. “SafeWork will conduct a series of targeted public workshops for equine businesses across the state over the coming months. “The workshops will discuss what the COP is and what workers and workplaces it relates to, as well as examining the different safety systems for varying disciplines within the horse
industry. “There will be training sessions to outline the responsibilities of businesses and individuals when new or inexperienced riders or handlers interact with horses in the workplace, and how to manage the associated risks. “The COP itself has been developed after extensive consultation with industry, and we are very keen to continue to work together to see it adopted to help drive down any incidents and help keep workers safe,” Mr Dunphy said.
People who interact with horses are most commonly injured as a result of falls, strikes, bites or kicks. The workshops will address these and how best to prevent such incidents happening in a place of work. For a full list of where events will be held and for further information on the code and to register for a workshop, visit SafeWork.nsw.gov.au You can also contact the local SafeWork office or email horsecode@safework.nsw.gov.au More are expected to be added.

Building the canter and self carriage By TANJA KRAUS When we have a young or green horse, building the canter is something that we need to spend time thinking on, as it often becomes an issue with the young horse, and in turn can become an issue for the rider. What I see happen fairly regularly is the young horse being taken from ‘building the canter’ in his start under saddle, to then being expected to do correct leads and canter circles, without much thought to how we can build this for the horse, and the physical and mental toll on the horse. Here is a timeline on how I build the canter for my horses, so they remain confident in the gait, whilst learning how to carry themselves correctly, with the rider in place. Build the canter cue Firstly, while online, and at liberty, I am going to build a very clear cue that asks the horse to canter. I personally like to use my voice (a smooch / kiss). By building the cue online and at liberty, and not using that cue at anytime other than when I want the horse to canter, from the very beginning I have a clear way of telling the horse what it is that I am wanting, so there isn’t confusion and the horse simply trotting faster when I ask for the canter. The objective: Understanding Build the gait, without the rider Spending time online cantering, allows the horse to ‘find his feet’ in the canter, and introduces the concept of the canter being on a circle. It is important here to note that the smaller the circle, the more difficult it is for the horse to learn to balance, and what we are trying to
Spending time online cantering, allows the horse to ‘find his feet’ in the canter. achieve at this point is the horse’s confidence in the gait. Ideally you would have a good sized roundyard, or teach the horse to canter around you on a long lead (22 ft or above). *Note – only ask the horse to do two or three circles in succession before changing something, you don’t want to promote the horse looking to the outside, falling to the forehand or simply ‘switching off’ in the gait. We want him present and building confidence in the gait at all times. The objective: Confidence. Build the gait, with the rider. When we start to build the canter for our horse that is just getting started under saddle, we ask for a few strides of canter (using our cue), and then reward (by resting or quitting the session). We are only worried about the canter being willing and free – we are not worried about
leads at this point. It is important to note that we do not need the horse to go faster to get into the canter. It is built from a ‘normal’ trotting pace. I generally build the canter in an arena so I can do it on a straight line, as often building the canter in a roundyard, causes its own issue of a lack of balance. We would continue this process for quite some time – each time we may ask for a few more strides, until the horse is confidently cantering with the rider when asked. I can start to introduce a leg to build the concept of asking for the correct lead, but I am not going to punish the horse for taking an incorrect lead. The more room I can give my horse in this the better – if I try to use a smaller circle (even 20 metres is small), or turn corners I am adding an element into the canter early.

Once he is confident, start to build correct leads from page 32
Confidence in canter with Rider Build the curve - once we have the horse happily cantering with the rider, we can begin to introduce the concept of the curve and start talking about correct leads. Firstly I am going to ask the horse to canter in his bigger space/ straight line and then I am going to ask the horse to take a curve/corner with me. In the first sessions I am only going to ask for a corner (i.e 1/4 of a circle). We are now introducing the concept of steering to the horse during the gait, and the concept of remaining balanced while turning a corner. As he builds confidence in the curve, we can add in a second curve (for example cantering around the short side of the arena – so a 1/2 20 metre circle). Objective: Receiving messages (turn) in canter, and staying balanced in the curve. Building Correct Leads Once he is confident in the curves, we can start to build correct leads. Firstly when I am asking for leads, I am going to have the horse comfortably doing ‘quarters in’ and ‘shoulder in’ which is part of the young horse starting process – independence of shoulders and hindquarters. Then, I am going to use my body position to set the horse up for a correct lead, and then I am going to ask him to canter off, while heading into a curve – this way he will find it more logical to go on the ‘correct lead’ as he is heading in that direction, but I have used my body to put his body in the correct shape first. For example, I’m trotting down the long side of the arena to the left, I am approaching the end of the arena, and I ask my
horse for a quarters in, then, as we hit the curve, I ask for a canter depart. If the horse does not take the correct lead, I immediately stop the canter and re-ask on the next curve (or I circle back). It is very important to note – we are not stopping him for punishment and we are not chasing him back up into the canter, we are merely setting him back up to take the correct lead. When he takes the correct lead, we reward him by allowing him to travel a short distance in the canter and then stopping to rest. The objective: Understanding body position means a specific lead. Remaining balanced Once the horse is understanding the correct leads, understanding to balance around corners and understanding how to receive messages (cues) in the canter, we can start to ask the horse to remain balanced and consistent in the canter. Circles can cause the horse to lean in the canter, and once this is established, it can be difficult to fix. The way we can build the horse in self carriage, and he can learn how to maintain balance on the circle is to build to full circles. Firstly I build on the work I have already done. Here are the exercises I use, and why. Rectangle I start by asking the horse to canter on the correct lead and then I ride a rectangle. Riding a rectangle provides a curve for the horse to maintain his balance on (the corner) and then gives him a straight to re-establish balance, and so on. The beauty of the rectangle is that you have two long sides (longer rest) and two short sides (higher intensity).
Achieving a confident balanced canter Squares As the horse develops confidence and balance in the rectangles, I start riding squares. Squares offer four even sides, and I can make the square smaller as the horse gains more balance. Generally I start at a 30 metre square, and come down in five metre increments until I can ride a 20 meter square at the canter. Ovals The oval is where I start to build my circle – each end of the oval is a half circle, again I start at around 30 metres, and then come down to 20 metre 1/2 circles at each end. As the horse learns to carry himself, and balance on the circles, I can make the straight lines of the oval shorter until I have developed a circle. Circles. Circles are something we need to have in our horses, however I never get to the point where I only ride circles. I prefer squares and as my horses ability and skill level increases, I will increase the difficulty and intensity level. I hope this info sheet has given you some ideas in how to build the correct leads and balance while preserving the horse’s confidence in the canter under saddle

Ride like a girl, a whole new meaning By ADE BOWDEN
will get a much better result.
When Michelle Payne, won the Melbourne Cup on Prince of Penzance in 2015, suddenly "riding like a girl" took on a whole new meaning. There have always been brilliant female horse riders down through the ages and across a whole range of horse disciplines, but Michelle Payne, impacted on all the other people (non horse riders) as well. Don't get me wrong, this is not a whole women versus men thing or anything like that, it is a recognition that women have lots to offer, we might do it differently to men, but it works. I have thought about this and have broken it down into four key areas, feeling, focus, passion and commitment.
Passion: is defined in the dictionary as "a strong and barely controllable emotion". If you work with horses long enough, they will give you plenty of tests to control your strong emotions, whatever they may be. Be aware, be mindful and be strong enough to walk away if it's all going pear shaped. On the flip side be mindful and strong enough to enjoy the good times as well. Don't be afraid of the passion that horses evoke in us, that's one of the main reasons most of us are drawn to them in the first place.
Feeling: is about the physical feel between you and your horse. Whether it's through a rope, the reins or an energy exchange such as liberty work. It's up to you as your horse's personal trainer to try to improve on this feel and get it lighter and softer each time. It's also about how you feel when everything comes together
As your horse's personal trainer try to improve on the feel and get it lighter and softer each time you ride.
and it's just right and also how you feel when it doesn't. Focus: is about the overall picture and where you are going with your horse and to break that "big picture" down into smaller more achievable tasks and build a training scale for you and your horse that lays down good foundation and
builds on that so you achieve your "big picture". Focus can be as big or as small as you like, but be mindful that the more you break a task down then the more you can focus on that thing. For example, when asking your horse to move forward, focus on each foot in turn instead of just shifting the whole horse, you
Commitment: is about your personal journey with horses and how your life balance fits in with this. It doesn't mean you necessarily have to make big sacrifices (time, money etc) to achieve your goals, but it does mean every time you interact with your horse, make it positive for both of you. I have seen male horse trainers that are totally awesome at feeling, focus, passion & commitment, but if I told them they rode like a girl, they may not appreciate it. Food for thought.

Miniature horses attempt jumping record Miniature horses - like their larger counterparts - each have their own personality however they tend to share a few common characteristics including great intelligence and willingness to please. This makes the horses highly trainable. The growth of dedicated miniature shows as well as miniature classes at agricultural shows, has given the breed greater opportunities to demonstrate their versatility. Along with traditional halter classes, many shows now provide what are broadly termed 'performance' classes. These incorporate lungeline events plus hunter (jumping) and trail classes that are based on Western models. A trail class for instance may see the horse and handler complete 6-8 movements including backing, side passes, pivots, straddles as well as negotiating bridges, cones and gates. It is in the area of showjumping however that miniature horses often surprise even the most seasoned horse lover. Despite their small size, miniature horses can outperform their larger cousins on a horse:jump height ratio. At the 2018 National Championships to be held at Tamworth in April a feature event of the program will be the attempt to break the Gunniess Book of Records - Highest jump by a miniature horse The Guinness Book of Records -

World's Highest Jump will attract some of the Country's best jumping horses and is a fantastic attraction to watch. The event will take approx. ½ - 1 hour to conduct depending on the number of entries for this particular class. This event was last recorded on the 15th March 2015 at Tamworth. The highest jump by a miniature horse is 42.5 inches or 108 cm by 'Castrawes Paleface Orion' owned by Robert Barnes (Australia). This year it is hoped this record will be broken by some of the very talented horses competing at the event.
