The Magic Millions National Broodmare sale on the Gold Coast in JUne offers some outstanding mares of international standing.
National broodmare sale offers trio of international class The catalogue for Australia's number one breeding stock sale has been enhanced further with three outstanding prospects with global appeal added to June's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. The three exciting mares to be offered for sale on the Gold Coast have all been covered by superstar international stallions. Admire Moon mare Vamoose, a lightly raced half sister to Caulfield Cup winner Admire Rakti, will be presented by Swettenham Stud after being covered for the first time in September by record breaker Lord Kanaloa - a Shadai Stallion Station based sire. Lord Kanaloa retired with earnings of over A$10 million after a spectacular racing career with 13 wins from 19 starts including six at Group One level. He was crowned Horse of the Year in Japan in 2013 and Champion Sprinter/Miler in Japan in both 2012 and 2013. In 2013 Lord Kanaloa was rated equal with Black Caviar on international ratings. Two unique prospects forming part of a stellar draft from Newgate Farm will go under the hammer after being covered by America's hottest sire, the champion Tapit. The mares, Morning Fix and Exclusive Love, are both group performed multiple winners with impressive international pedigrees. Tapit is the current standout sire of North America. The National Weanling Sale will precede the National Broodmare, Yearling and Racehorse Sales. Over recent seasons the National Weanling Sale has produced many stars – whether in the sale ring at yearling or two-year-old sales or on the track at the elite level. The 2016 National Weanling Sale has attracted a catalogue of 400 lots including the Bellview Park Stud Unreserved Dispersal and the Bell River Thoroughbreds Dispersal. The National Broodmare Sale has produced subsequent group winning stars including Cinque Cento, Russeting, Sister Madly and Miracles of Life and has sold the dams of countless future Group One winners. This year’s catalogue includes an outstanding line up of entries – hundreds of maiden race fillies and mares including the likes of Bounding, Fontiton and Perignon, Dalziel Racing’s Bring Me the Maid, and Triple Crown’s Group One winning juvenile Peggy Jean served in her first season by I Am Invincible. Over 450 yearlings will be catalogued in 2016 and Magic Millions is pleased to announce a select session for the first time. For more information on the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale please contact Bloodstock Manager Barry Bowditch on 07 5504 1200 or email bloodstock@magicmillions.com.au.

The Horse Report
Equestrian workplace safety in the spotlight Australians identify with horses. It is a horse race that stops the country on the first Tuesday in November, just as it was a rearing horse that opened the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. As a nation, we love our horses, but at what personal price? In a recent survey undertaken by the Australian Horse Industry Council, of 3017 respondents, 38% had received an injury serious enough to require hospitalisation. Would other industries ignore these statistics? Horse SA, a non-profit association, is organising the People.Horses.Culture Conference at Royal Randwick Racecourse this month in an effort to draw attention to the issues, and work being done in the field of workplace safety and horse welfare as it relates to the working environment and breadth of culture found amongst horse enterprises and activities. “Human safety and horse welfare are the two biggest challenges of our time for the horse industry and participants,” Horse SA Executive Officer and conference organiser, Julie Fiedler said. “We have to step back and take a new look at the historical way in which we interact with horses in the workplace.”
Page 4
A conference in Sydney this month will deal with workplace safety in the equestrian world. Horse welfare and human safety are intrinsically linked. If a horse feels threatened or their safety compromised, there is the increased risk that the horse will be unable to respond to cues which were ultimately applied to keep the rider or handler safe.
This event targets managers, supervisors, coaches and committee members associated with equine workplaces, including traditional stables, non-profit community events, vocational training courses, agistment centres, venues where contractors (such as farriers
& vets) work, showgrounds, transport and coaching businesses. Issues planned to be discussed at this event include SafeWork NSW update on the development of a Code of Practice for new and inexperienced persons interacting with horses and recommendations from a recent national review into equine training organisations. Also to be considered are aspects relating to horse industry cultural attitudes, beliefs and traditional practices, along with how people identify themselves with animals and as such, their willingness to consider their own safety. The People.Horses.Culture Conference is open to anyone who is interested in safer workplaces involving horses, horse welfare (as it relates to the workplace) and the cultural dimensions that facilitate, or inhibit, the uptake of safer work practices. The People.Horses.Culture Conference will be held from 8.45 am to 4.30 pm on Friday, May 13 at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Full registration is $190 or for Horse SA members $155 inc. Whether you ride for pleasure or competition, our joint supplements can provide the additional support that your horse may need to assist them in performing at their best.
GLUCOSAMINE Repetitive joint stress, ageing and physical injury all contribute to cartilage losing its resilience. As cartilage production is disrupted and the cartilage degenerates, osteoarthritis – characterised by pain, inflammation and joint stiffness - sets in. Supplementing with glucosamine provides one of the most important raw materials for the synthesis and healing of cartilage.
DEVILS CLAW Used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, it is useful for treating pain in a range of joint and muscular problems. The bitter action of Devils Claw stimulates and tones the digestive system. As it is thought that most arthritic conditions are associated with poor digestion and absorption of food, Devils Claw has a stimulant effect on the stomach and gall bladder which contributes to its use as an anti-arthritic remedy.

The Horse Report
Aussie show jumpers chase elusive Olympic medal Australian show jumpers Edwina TopsAlexander and Scott Keach have earned early selection on the Rio 2016 Olympic Team. For 51-year-old Keach, Rio is his second Olympics and it comes 28 years since his Olympic debut at the Seoul Games in 1988. He surpasses the Australian record for the longest time between competing at the Games. He has qualified on his horse Fedor while Edwina Tops-Alexander has also done so with her horse Caretina De Joter. Keach was born in Tasmania, grew up in Western Australia, and lived in South Australia when he made his Games debut in the Eventing Team alongside Andrew Hoy, Barry Roycroft and David Green. Although the result of finishing fifth in the Team and 23rd in Individual in 1988 was disappointing he has many fond memories. “I remember the whole Olympic experience and I enjoyed it very much,” Keach recalled. “I remember going to the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony and things like that. We had good horses and riders on our Team but in the end things didn’t quite go our way.” He and Fedor have won a high level four star event and he knows he has a horse that is well suited to the Olympic challenges. “We bought Fedor in Europe three years ago as a fairly inexperienced horse and I’ve produced him up to Grand Prix level,” he said. His journey to get to a second Olympic Team has been relatively unknown compared with Tops-Alexander, who has 200,000 followers on social media and has won some of the most prestigious events in the world. Rio will be the third Olympics for the twotime Global Champions Tour winner (2011, 2012) and she is confident with 99 days until the Opening Ceremony. “Compared to Beijing and London I feel that I have a lot more experience under my belt and I feel more confident,” Tops-Alexander said. Tops-Alexander was Australia's best performed show jumping rider at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games. She will captain the show jumping team for Rio 2016. “I'm thrilled to be selected for the third time

it's a great honour to represent Australia,” Tops-Alexander said “Considering I'm based in Europe I get a real Australian feel whilst competing which definitely gives me a lot of strength.” Tops-Alexander and Keach were both part of the Team that qualified Australia the four spots for the Games last year. She is very pleased to have him named with her as an early selection. The final two show jumping spots will be finalised in late June. Tops-Alexander is very happy with Caretina de Joter. She has been riding her for the past eight months and was watching her for a year before she bought her. “She has recently been in great shape. I'm saving her and making the best plan possible for her to peak at the Olympics. “I'm myself keeping fit and competing every week at 5-star level. I recently won the Global Champions Tour 5 star Grand Prix of Miami on Lintea Tequila, who would be my second choice for the Olympics.” Tops-Alexander from Sydney, trains in the Netherlands with her husband Jan Tops. She moved to Europe in 1999 chasing success.
Australia has never previously won a medal in show jumping at the Games but that could change come August 2016.

Managing and treating club feet By DAVID LOVELL BVSC
Horse owners often ask just how serious is a club foot? There is no correct answer. Each case is different and certainly very many horses with club feet perform perfectly well and never have a day’s problem, and the very best of luck to them. This was very strongly reenforced into my mind in the late 1990s when I was fortunate enough to visit a standardbred breeding farm in New Jersey in the USA where I was privileged to inspect the breeding stallion who at that time was the fastest racehorse of all time. There is a very strong genetic component to the development of a horse with a club foot. The condition is highly heritable and by far the greatest numbers of club footed horses have inherited the problem. Amazingly this horse had a very prominent Grade 3 club foot. Coupled with this was the fact that he was also a cryptorchid, having only one descended testicle. That year, the horse covered
When it comes to defining the effect of a club foot on a horse, there is no clear single answer however an x-ray can show the bone shape in the hoof and possibly identify any other abnormalities.

pact and dense bone mass. It is always very important to xray the foot to assess the bone shape, and also to look for any other abnormalities that may cause problems. Once the horse is semi mature, it is impossible for the actual bone to change size and shape and no matter what happens that foot is always going to be different. The higher bone angle, (for example 50 – 55’ as opposed to 45 – 50”) and the denser more compact bone mean that the hoof wall and capsule will always be a little more contracted and upright, what we call a contracted foot. If the problem is corrected before the horse is mature, the pedal bone has the capability of growing and re-modelling resulting in a more normal looking foot. (I am not going to debate what is normal? - normal relative to what!). As I have said above, the problem is due to a shortening or contraction of the deep flexor tendon – muscle belly unit. This contraction pulls on the bottom of the pedal bone where the tendon attaches, and causes the bone to rotate around its axis and increase the palmer angle. The key to correcting the problem is the inferior check ligament. This is a very firm fibrous ligament that grows out of the top of the cannon bone just below the knee, and runs down the back of the cannon, attaching and merging with the deep flexor tendon about mid cannon.

I have absolutely no doubt that a very high number of horses with a club foot develop lameness issues with that foot, particularly if they are tending towards the higher levels of performance, and I believe possibly more so with dressage, although all disciplines are involved. So much so that if examining a horse for pre purchase, and the buyer has aspirations towards performance, I tend to advise against the horse. As an aside, I would also point out that a club foot is most commonly unilateral, that is one front foot and is caused by some form of over stimulation and contraction of the muscle belly of the deep flexor tendon. For some reason, it would appear that there is a corresponding reflex relaxation of the muscle belly of the opposite front leg and this foot, particularly in thoroughbreds, often has a zero, or negative palmer angle resulting in a very flat foot and the whole range of lameness issues that this syndrome leads to. However, today we will limit our discussion to the club foot. The bottom line is that, club feet are no different to most other equine lameness. In the great majority of cases, they can be managed, not cured. That being said, early intervention, before the foal is past the yearling stage, can offer an excellent prognosis for development of a normal foot. In older horses, the shape and form of the pedal bone is very different to a normal bone. In particular, club feet have a higher bone angle with a more com-

several mares. So much for the club foot! Another very high profile horse that I was fortunate to be involved with went to two Olympics and he had a grade 2 club. As a veterinarian, obviously most of the horses we see have problems of some sort. Particularly I look at a lot of lameness issues, and certainly I tend to see the worst of club feet.

Surgery can address some lameness  From page 10
The purpose of this ligament is to help transfer some of the load of impact and stance into the bone column of the leg and so protect the muscle from excess force. This ligament is very inelastic and will not stretch to allow the pedal bone to de-rotate, even if the muscle relaxes. Surgical cutting and resection of the check ligament suddenly allows the now free tendon muscle unit to relax and stretch with the bone de-rotating, if all other factors are managed correctly. The severed check ligament eventually heals and “grows back together restoring the force absorption function, but hopefully in the 8 – 12 weeks this takes, the bone has derotated and is now in a more normal palmer angle position. Management is critical. The horse must be not lame so that proper weight bearing and load distribution can occur. Typically club foot lameness occurs in two areas. The high palmer angle drives the weight down through the tip of P3 causing sole pain, particularly in young animals, and severe osteitis, sole thinning, and white line separation can occur. The other source of lameness is the navicular bone. In this case, the upright and tight deep flexor tendon “pushes and “bangs the

navicular bone into the back of the pastern, concussing it, causing degeneration changes, and ligament instability. This form is usually in older animals and can be difficult to deal with. I have absolutely no doubt that cutting the check ligament, particularly in younger animals, is the treatment of choice.
K9 Coat & Eyes Show Body & Condition
After surgery, it is usual to shoe the horse. Firstly to help avoid and sole soreness, and in more severe cases, we design and apply an appropriate “corrective shoe to help ensure some tendon stretching and lengthening. We have a special “leverage shoe we use in the more severe cases which we believe gives very good results. Each case is different and proper examination and assessment is essential. Many cases can be managed with trimming and shoeing, particularly grades 1 and 2. Skilled workmanship, particularly in lower grades, can often greatly improve the appearance, and function, of the foot, although an experienced examiner should always pick the club. More severe cases will have a dish in the dorsal wall and diverging growth rings with a far from ideal foot. Categorically, one thing is for certain sure, lowering the heels on a club foot will not help the problem, and more often than not, the foot will become worse. The fixed length of the tendon – check ligament portion, means that it is impossible for the bone to de-rotate. Lowering the heels can place more pressure on the sole, increasing pain, and stimulating the muscle belly to contract more and the condition to worsen. Always seek proper professional advice.

The Horse Report
Are you getting in your horse’s way? By TANJA KRAUS I see a lot of horses have trouble executing something that their rider has asked them to do. Let’s take something simple like an upwards transition into trot or canter for example - for the sole reason that the horse isn't being allowed to execute the maneuver. Seems crazy doesn't it? In fact some of you are reading this and thinking, don't be ridiculous, if I ask my horse to trot or canter, then I want him to do it. How can you say that I'm not allowing him to do it? To put simply - because I see it alot. And I see it so much, across all levels of horse and rider, that I understand the rider doesn't even know that they are blocking the horse in some way. Coming from a place of fear If the rider has had a bad experience in that particular maneuver, then self preservation is going to kick in and their body is going to try and prevent it , even if they have asked for it. I’ve seen many people ask their
horses to canter and then pull back on the reins either to balance themselves or because subconsciously they don't want the horse to canter (or they want him to canter slowly). This causes more trouble than simply getting the canter because you ask the horse to canter, then you tell him he is wrong for doing it! Most horses are going to react to this negatively. Mistrust Often the rider doesn't believe that the horse is going to do it so they ride through the entire maneuver with pressure which causes brace. Brace means the horse can’t execute the maneuver to a high standard, means the rider rides harder next time - a vicious circle! Ask the horse to do it, then get out of his way! I see this alot in moves like halt to canter, or half pass. The rider tries to ride every stride because they don't think the horse will canter, and if he does, the rider thinks he will stop. So he/she rides him like that. The horse feels constant pressure and is inclined to push
back on it. This makes him focus his energy somewhere else, takes the energy away from the move and the horse breaks gait. Lack of understanding in the mechanics of the maneuver. I might see a rider trying to execute a spin or turnaround on a horse and the rider will be in the horse’s way, without realizing it. When you are working maneuvers, take the time to break them down and figure out where you need to sit, to give Above is Elton. A horse at one of the liberthe horse the best chance of using his body correctly with- ty clinics - pictured here playing with his owner - in full collection! No rider needed. out you blocking him. Forgetting he knows how to do it all! We forget that our horse knows how to do every manoeuvre we ask of him, anytime. He runs around the paddock doing them! We have to build in a cue and we have to build a response to the cue but do we need to teach him how to canter, fly change, spin, piaffe ? No! Next time you are asking your horse for things - take a minute to check if you are in his way - This is Bessie, also at a liberty clinic - 18 it may make all the difference! months old and not started under saddle in full collection - no rider needed.

“As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The Horse Report
The simplicity of feeding your horse By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist.
www.hiform.com.au
Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse’s digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. We suggest feeding a feed that is not wet or soaked because this does not encourage the normal process at the point of the mouth and the mouth is the first contact your horse makes with his feed. If you are using supplements you will be required to dampen the feed, but this means damp bordering on dry, not wet or soaked. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. But seriously take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a Safeway or Coles shopping bag, not very big. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45 L. We know quite a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract and it does seem a little bit out of whack. But in the wild as nature had intended the horse will survive extremely well because he or she is not expected to ingest large amounts of feed at one time, but rather is out grazing continually moving around stopping to rest when required, to drink and sleep. Roughage is undoubtedly the most important basis of the equine diet and horses really should consume approximately 1.5 to 3% of their body weight on a daily basis, it is
Page 30
Grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hay will help to ensure a healthy balance in your horse.
recommended that at least half of horse’s diet should be roughage in the form of hay or pasture. The equine gastrointestinal system is easily upset and if sudden changes are made in the diet it can definitely increase the risk of colic and other digestive issues. So why don’t we take a closer look at how the equine digestive system functions? We will also find the link between the horse’s physiology and his daily nutritional intake. When a horse takes food into his mouth, whether it is grass, hay or grain this time is used to push the feed to the back of the mouth. The horse’s molars then grind the feed and this is where the enzymatic action begins, creating saliva which begins the process of digestion. Even at this point there is the beginning of a breakdown of starch. If you give your horse a handful of whole oats he would chew and grind this very quickly, once chewed the oats will have absorbed its own weight in moisture. Hay on the other hand will absorb approxi-
mately four times its own weight. The food is then pushed by the tongue past the soft palate into the pharynx which is the opening to the oesophagus, this is a flexible tube that runs down the neck and into the stomach. There are a number of muscular contractions which push the food along. Because the contractions only move in one direction the feed only goes one-way. Only a small amount of digestion takes place in the stomach, there is a small microbial population which does assist with fermentation and a small amount of enzymatic action, however the food only remains for a short time in the stomach, approximately 15 minutes on average. It then makes its way to the small intestine so there is little time for much breakdown of food. Once the stomach is approximately 2/3 full, it then starts to pass food into the small intestine this process continues as long as the horse is eating and by the time it reaches the small intestine it would have been liquefied by acids in the stomach. Even though the horse’s feed remains in the stomach for a brief time it does have quite a bearing on the horse’s health. The upper and inner portion of the stomach’s lining consists of non-glandular, squamous cell layers; these are very susceptible to hydrochloric acid which the stomach secretes. If there is food contained in the stomach at frequent intervals the acid in the stomach tends to be absorbed. However, horse’s fed only once or twice daily with large feeds have a much higher risk of gastric ulcers and other digestive upsets. Roughage in the form of good quality hays or pasture does the best job of absorbing the stomach acids. So therefore horses on a high roughage diet have less risk of developing ulcers. The Horse Report
Understanding the equine digestive tract From page 30 From here we follow down to the small intestine which is a complicated tube hanging from the loin area by a membrane, shaped similar to a fan which is called the mesentery. The duodenum shaped like a U-turn, is the first part of the small intestine, this shape helps to prevent food been forced back into the stomach should the small intestine become distended. Most of the protein digestion takes place in the small intestine as does the absorption of amino acids; however some grains are processed more efficiently in the small intestine than roughage. The small intestine can hold up to 30% of the gastrointestinal tract’s capacity. Within the small intestine food is broken down by enzymes. Starch which has not already been digested by saliva is then converted into a simple sugar called maltose, other types of complex sugars and carbohydrates will then be broken down into a simple form of sugar to enable them to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. They are then transported in the blood and will eventually arrive at the liver which is the horse’s major chemical processing plant. The liver is capable of reorganising and sorting amino acids into protein and is able to bind water-soluble nutrients to their suitable transporters to enable them to be distributed throughout the body. The main location for the digestion and absorption of fats is the small intestine. Most humans and animals use the gallbladder secretions to assist with the breakdown of fats however the horse does not have a gallbladder which is another strange fact, horses however seem use diets containing 10 to 15% fat extremely efficiently in particular for energy and weight gain. Fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K are absorbed in the small intestine as are calcium some phosphorus and B group items . It takes approximately one hour to an hour and a half for food which is now liquefied to pass through the length of the small intestine. The ileum is the last part of the small intestine which then leads to the hindgut. This part is made up of the cecum, large (or ascending) colon, small colon, rectum, and anus. This is where the hardest work is performed of the whole digestive process. Enzymes do not play the lead role here, due to the fact that the digestion in the hindgut is largely microbial. This is performed by a large population of billions of symbiotic bacteria, that very efficiently break down fibre into smaller components which are called volatile fatty acids.
The digestive tract of a horse is sensitive to any change in diet.
This allows absorption through the gut wall. This is a natural process and is also essential for a healthy digestive system. The caecum, is approximately 1.2 m long and has a capacity of around 30 L this plays a huge role in the first stage of hindgut digestion. The caecum is located high in the horses right flank and extends down and forward towards the diaphragm. Hard to digest molecules and plant fibres composed of cellulose and other molecules travel through the stomach and small intestine and are unaffected by enzymes. However when they reach the fermentation vat of the caecum that huge bacteria population makes short work of them, they are usually broken down within about five hours. The caecum has the ability to slow the passage of food to enable the microbes to perform their work. Partly digestive food then travels from the caecum to the large colon this is where the fermentation continues. It is almost 3.6 m in length and has an incredible volume of approximately 50 to 60 L this is approximately 38% of the GI tract’s total capacity. It is in the large colon where food remains for the longest period of time approximately 36 to 48 hours. It has a construction that resembles a series of pouches and is capable of breaking down large volumes of fibrous material; however it can also become a risk factor if the pouches become distended trapping gas during a bout of colic. It is quite apparent that they are almost custom-made for twisting and strangulating their own tissues! The food then moves to the small colon once it has been fully processed which is approximately 3.6 m long, however it is a small diameter approximately 10 cm. Most of the nutrients have been absorbed by this time but whatever is left in the horse’s
gut, the horse will be unable to digest. This part of the hindgut is used to reclaim excess moisture from the remaining material. Once the food leaves the small colon it has become solid again and has been formed into faecal balls. Approximately 36 to 72 hours after the horse first consumed his or her food this waste material is expelled as manure Because the horse’s gastrointestinal tract is very sensitive any change in the horse’s diet must be done slowly not quickly, the reason for this is that it can compromise the gut bacteria population. If these bacteria start dying off there is an increased risk of colic and the horse would not be receiving the correct nutritional intake. We already know that the horse’s gastrointestinal tract must be treated with great respect. For those of you who have experienced a horse with colic you will know that it is a very distressing time for both the horse and the horse owner. So preventative measures are always the best option in the management of your horse’s health. In future issues, I will look at these measures and how to best maintain a healthy digestive system in your horse. If you require any advice or information on nutrition or diet for your horse please do not hesitate to contact me via (03) 9775 6422 or my email antoinette@hiform.com.au You can also request technical data, certificate of analysis and specifications for all products including the horse feeds. I have also included a link to our free diet analysis, and yes it is free, there is no charge for this and unlike computer software programs, we advise you on how to feed your horse as an individual, because horses are biochemically unique.
