Oceania 2019 Australian teams announced Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce the final teams for the 2019 Oceania Championships, to be held in Taupo, New Zealand from 10-12th May 2019.

This will be the first time that three Australian teams will be competing in the challenge, the largest contingent of Australian athletes to attend the biennial event to date.

The Oceania Championships represent a critical component of the High-Performance programs preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, providing a unique opportunity for athletes to experience the new Olympic format.

Following the training camp the selectors will confirm which of the combinations will form each team of four including the specification of those that will participate as the three team combinations and one individual combination.

For most of the young riders this marks their first time on a team, giving them an opportunity to gain invaluable Championship experience.

This is in alignment with EA’s HighPerformance focus and long-term plan for the development of emerging combinations.

A staging camp will take place in NSW for all team and reserve combinations prior to the championships.

The camp will focus on team culture; competition preparation, and will also give riders the opportunity to train with team coaches Nelson Pessoa, Sam Lyle and Will

Is your horse’s immune system ready for winter?

The modern sport horse is under a fair bit of stress – and all of this takes a toll on its immune systems making it easier for it to succumb to a variety of health problems such as respiratory infections, viruses, travel sickness and gut ulcers.

The best defence any horse can have against all of these, and a few others besides, is a strong and healthy immune system.

After 25 years of healing horses with infections of all kinds and getting their immune systems back afterwards, I always recommend a good herbal boost in Autumn.

The body wards off diseases through two systems of defence - immunity and nonspecific resistance.

The latter offers immediate protection against a variety of invaders, by mechanical barriers such as skin and mucous membranes as well as phagocytosis, inflammation and fever.

Phagocytosis is the engulfment and digestion of bacteria and other foreign particles by macrophages and monocyte cells.

Immunity involves activation of specific lymphocytes that combat a particular pathogen or other foreign substance.

The body system that carries out immune responses is the lymphatic system.

It concentrates invaders such as bacteria, viruses, foreign substances and cancer cells in certain lymphatic organs, circulates lymphocytes through the organs to make contact with the foreign substances, destroys them and eliminates them from the body.

Immunity also involves distinguishing self from non-self molecules and memory for most previously encountered antigens so that future encounters prompt an even more rapid and vigorous response.

The natural immunity of a body, be it man or horse, is a precious possession which requires nurturing, not abuse.

How often is your horse in pain?

Have you ever considered how often your horse may be in pain - once a day, once a week, once a month, once a year?

If the answer was yes to any of these, then you are obviously aware of some pain associated problems.

How many problems can be related to pain?

Horses are like humans when it comes to pain and pain thresholds, some cope with pain quite well, others simply don’t at all.

Pain can create situations that can escalate and make the problem worse.

When we consider that horses are creatures of flight, often their only escape route is fastforward, or upwards, fast.

Horses are not designed for the job for which they are used, as they have a rigid spine, not flexible like a dog, a long neck and a heavy head.

We then add the saddle, bridle and rider and ask our horses to perform, what are in many cases are unnatural tasks.

I don't believe there are very many bad horses, I think that horses that display bad behaviour do this as a way of saying no, I cannot do this because I am in pain.

The logical reasons why horses may react in a certain way needs to be considered, for example, when first mounting your horse and it goes to move off; this is annoying granted, but why does a horse do this?

Sometimes it may be that the horse is a little naughty, but have you considered the horse associates being mounted with pain?

Credit is often not given to the intelligence of horses and certainly some may be smarter than others, however horses often do remember activities or actions associated with pain.

They are creatures of habit which allows us to train by repeating exercises, so the horse will learn.

If a horse has been broken-in correctly then the forward aid should always work.

However, when pain is associated with this some horses will react by balking, rearing or bucking or, in a milder case, not going forward in the trot for example or perhaps giving the rider the feeling of 'sucking-back'.

When your body, mind and legs are asking for forward, the horse should automatically respond, and if that does not happen then you need to check if it is your training method or if it associated to pain.

Pain can impact on so many areas for the performance horse; it can cause behavioural problems, loss of performance and nervousness.

A tense horse creates further pain and this compounds the problems.

For us to think that horses somehow are immune to pain is ridiculous.

So, what can we do to prevent problems from occurring that may cause pain?

We already know that undiagnosed pain can cause problems. What do we do when in pain the day after a hard workout at the gym?

Is you horse naughty because he is fresh or is he in pain?

Generally, we may consider walking it off, or performing gentle exercises to keep the body moving, perhaps a massage, but the most important point is that we manage the pain.

We may take something to ease the discomfort, preferably something natural, but very often we reach for the quick fix, a painrelieving drug.

Horse owners must learn to 'read' their horses far more efficiently if they are going to prevent pain issues by putting one or more of the pain-preventive measures in place.

Horses between the age of two and six (still maturing), and horses aged over 12 are more likely to experience pain at a higher level.

As horses age, there is a higher risk of injury and pain related conditions, including degenerative joint disease, hamstring injuries, tendon ligament damage, back pain and muscles soreness, to name a few.

For young horses, the conditions tend to vary somewhat, for example, as the young horses training increases so does the risk of pain caused by the horse being asked to use different muscles.

Tight hamstrings, sore backs and general soreness are very common in young horses.

Managing these pain-related issues is essential to avoid the escalation of other problems.

Every horse should be given assistance to prevent and manage pain.

This can be achieved by regular massage, Bowen, acupuncture, equine tension relief and natural products which may include some herb and plant extracts, such as Curcuma Longa (turmeric).

When at an event I always watch the horses, as there is so much you can learn from their body language, which can be very strong or very subtle.

Many horses at dressage competitions appear to have soreness issues ranging from mild to chronic and, as mentioned earlier in the article, some horses can manage pain better than others.

Just remind yourself that pain is common, and it should be treated seriously, take the pain away no matter how mild and see for yourself how much improvement there is in a happy, pain-free horse.

Confused about chelated calcium and oxalate pastures?

By MALCOLM GREEN EquiFeast Australia Social media is full of babble from suppliers claiming their calcium supplement is better than everyone elses.

Apparently some are: * the most bioavailable - and others * protect the calcium from oxalate best The latest trendy ingredient is chelated calcium and that it is credited with both of those characteristics.

There is one big problem.

At best these characteristics are unimportant. At worst, they simply aren't true.

So am I anti-chelated calcium?

Absolutely not since I own a patent for its use in horses and have been selling it for nearly 25 years.

What I want is for people to buy a real chelated calcium supplement and not one with just token quantities buried in a pile of calcium carbonate.

We are passionate from the trial work that we have done and the feedback from happy customers and some influential vets that chelated calcium does things that traditional calcium supplements can't do.

In fact, we are convinced the explanation that oxalate toxicity is, like Millers disease, a calcium deficiency disease is fundamentally flawed.

In our very successful trials we actually did the opposite of everybody else and took away the calcium supplements.

All horses recovered despite getting much less calcium in their diets.

They even started to pee out excess calcium they no longer needed!

Consider this logical thought process: 1. In oxalate affected horses, the bones sacrifice themselves to maintain the level of calcium in the blood and body fluids.

Blood tests confirm this.

2.So while the bones deteriorate, the rest of the body should be functioning normally until the bones are so depleted they can no longer maintain blood calcium levels.

3.Which leaves a huge question: Why are the first symptoms of oxalate poisoning failures in the muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments?

Under the deficiency theory these organs should be the last to fail not the first.

Chelated calcium molecules are very stable.

They don't give up their calcium to the bloodstream so they are not directly treating a calcium deficiency.

We have tested all the Australian products that claim to contain chelated calcium.

Some appear to have none and the strongest seems to deliver about Âź gram in a single dose.

I simply cannot see how 0.25 grams of calcium can possibly achieve anything in the context of trying to fix a deficiency when the RDA for calcium is 20-

30 grams a day.

Even our 6-12 grams can't work that way.

How do you treat a coughing horse?

There is no quick fix to treating a coughing horse due to the complexity of the reasons behind the cough.

mental pollutants, fungal spores (moulds) and bacteria.

Naturally, these contaminants must be filtered and removed from the body before the air enters the lower airways.

Given that the horse breathes at 16-20 times per minute, there is a large quantity of contaminants that must be removed.

The normal horse has billions of tiny hairs (cilia) lining the internal surface of the airways.

Coated with mucous, these act as a trap to catch, filter out and collect the tiny foreign particles inhaled.

The cilia then expel the mucous and contained particles up the tract and into the throat using a wave-like motion.

From the throat the mucous is expelled either through the mouth or the nostrils.

However, should this filtration process fail, contaminants are carried into the lower airways with every breath and establish infection or disease.

These factors result in constriction of the bronchioles in the lower airway which potentiates the chronic cough situation.

The cough is the physical attempt by the animal to get rid of this discharge.

There is also an immune component to the lower airway defence mechanism.

This involves both a cellular defence mechanism and specific antibody production.

The cellular defence consists of certain types of white blood cells that engulf the foreign particles and or infectious agents.

Coughing horses are extremely frustrating to treat due to the complex factors involved in the cause of the disease.

Therefore, a simple `cure’ is difficult to obtain.

The problem usually begins with a sudden explosive onset of coughing, nasal discharge and a temperature.

The horse is usually sick – dull, depressed, and off their food.

This presentation is due to an acute infection either with a respiratory virus or a primary or secondary bacterial infection.

This phase of the disease process can be treated with specific antibacterial agents and a favourable response anticipated.

Unfortunately, these acute episodes often cause significant tissue damage to the mucosa lining the upper and lower respiratory tract.

It is this damage that may perpetuate an acute infection into a chronic cough.

In order to understand how this damage results in chronic coughing, it is necessary to look at the normal defence mechanism of the respiratory tract.

Other white blood cells produce antibodies that combat foreign particles and infectious agents.

Should the physical filtration and immune defences fail the net result is the development of chronic lower airway disease and chronic coughing.

However, of more significance than an absence of immune reaction is the development of immune over - reaction or hypersensitivity.

Many horses become sensitised to some of the particles inhaled including pollens, fungal spores and dust.

They become allergic to the actual material deposited in their airways.

The allergic reaction to the dust or pollens further results in an inflammatory reaction potentiates the coughing. The final problem in low airway inflammatory disease is the development of secondary bacterial infections in the material accumulating in the lower respiratory system.

This infection continues to exacerbate the inflammation and coughing.

Successful treatment of the coughing horse is extremely difficult and can result from a combination of two factors: 1) Elimination of the causal factors 2) Repair of the body defence mechanisms Elimination of the casual factors is very difficult.

Chronic coughing is rarely due to a primary infection.

Therefore treatment with antibiotics will not cure the disease unless the other contributing factors are eliminated or controlled.

The problem is that the horse is continually inhaling particles that challenge the already damaged defence system.

The best we can do is attempt to reduce the levels of contaminating material in the air.

Therefore avoidance of dust is essential.

Arenas should be sprayed with water before working the horse.

Once environmental factors have been considered, medical treatments for chronic coughing must be discussed.

Appropriate antibiotic therapy is necessary in the initial stages to target the secondary bacterial infection present.

4) ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES - These drugs are very important as they temper the severity of the inflammatory response. The amount of discharge and reaction that occurs is reduced and eventually a more favourable environment for healing is created. They also counteract the effects of allergy.

chronic coughs is, therefore, very difficult and the likelihood of an initial and complete cure is not high.

Owners should contact their veterinarian for a thorough examination and evaluation of the horse.

This may entail endoscopic examination and possibly sampling of the lower airways.

Equine gut health, what's the big deal?

Supplied by POSEIDON EQUINE As we learn more about the importance of human gut health and the role it plays in our overall health and well-being, we are now slowly turning our efforts to understanding the impact gut health has on our horses too.

However, unlike humans, horses have a highly specialise caecum and large colon, collectively known as the hindgut, and it plays the greatest role in horse health.

How and why we feed our horses has a great deal to do with the hindgut health..

Horses themselves don't have the ability to digest fibre from forage sources like pasture and hay within their diet. This is because they lack the enzymes necessary to breakdown fibre.

However, the hindgut, the site of fibre digestion, houses millions if not billions of microbes (mainly bacteria and fungi) which do have the enzymes necessary to breakdown fibre. So, while the horse provides somewhere warm and moist to live with an endless source of fibrous food, the by-product of this digestion, volatile fatty acids (VFA's) is absorbed and utilised by the horse as a major energy source.

These fibre digesting microbes also produce B-group vitamins like thiamine and biotin, as well as vitamin K. They also keep pathogens under control and stop them taking over and dominating.

Research* is also suggesting that the gut and microbiome may actually be involved with many clinical diseases in the horse and even impact the joint, soundness, and allergies. (*Tom Schell, D.V.M., CVCH, CVH)

The balance of the bacteria can also impact on behaviour and appetite. When the hindgut becomes stressed and more acidic, there is compromised vitamin B production which can reduce appetite and increase anxious behaviour.

We used to think bacteria was only linked to disease or illness.

As research increases in this area of horse health, we may begin to understand the significant role these little critters play.

We are slowly learning more and more about the need to keep the balance of good and bad bacteria in favour of the good guys.

When diet (high starch/sugars), medications, stress, travel, competition, illness etc potentially change the bacterial balance, then we can get a different set of outcomes.

Other less helpful bacterial strains can become more dominant, restricting the more helpful strains, creating potentially harmful by-products (e.g. lactic acid) that impact health and even impact digestion and/or nutrient uptake.

This can lead to: * Damage to the gut lining (leaky gut) * Laminitis * Colic * Nervous behaviours * Less appetite * Poor weight maintenance * Dull coat * Reduced movement * Loose manure Horses contain 10 times more bacteria than living cells.

What’s the benefit of Condition Scoring?

By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS While many of us look at our horses visually to see if they are too thin or too fat, condition scoring is not something formally done by most horse owners. And yet it is the only way to really know if you are feeding your horse too little or too much.

How much should you feed your horse?

Feeding your horse the right amount of feed is important to: 1.Prevent unwanted weight loss or weight gain 2.Prevent diseases like colic and gastric ulcers 3.Prevent unruly, uncontrolled behavior when being ridden How do you know how much to feed your horse?

The first golden rule of horse feeding is always feed your horse a minimum of 1.5% of its bodyweight per day of forage. So for a 500 kg horse, the absolute minimum amount of hay, pasture and chaff it should have access to per day is 7.5kg. Your horse should preferably be fed around 2% of its bodyweight per day as forage.

Feeding this amount of forage will keep your horse’s gut healthy, keep your horse happy and help prevent colic and gastric ulcers.

Is this amount of forage enough to maintain your horse’s bodyweight?

The only way you can answer this question is by regularly condition scoring your horse.

Condition scoring is a practice used to determine the amount of body fat your horse is carrying and will give you an indication

over time whether your horse is gaining, holding or losing weight.

This in turn helps to fine tune your horse’s diet.

Condition Scoring Condition scoring of horses involves an assessment of certain parts of a horse’s body for ‘fatness’.

The most commonly used sites are the along the neck, along the withers, the loin, tailhead, ribs and behind the shoulder as shown below.

Once an assessment of these areas of the horse’s body is made, a system developed by researchers at the Texas A&M University, USA (Henneke et al.

1983), may be used to assign a ‘score’ to reflect your horse’s level of body fatness.

This condition scoring system presents condition scores on a scale of one to nine, with one being extremely emaciated and nine being extremely fat.

Here’s a description of all the body condition scores (with pictures):

SCORE 1 — POOR - The horse is extremely emaciated. The bone structures of the neck, wither and shoulders are easily visible. The ribs, backbone and tailhead project prominently

SCORE 2 — VERY THIN - The horse is emaciated. The bone structures of the neck, wither and shoulders are faintly discernable. The structure of the ribs, backbone and tailhead are prominent.

SCORE 3 — THIN The structure of the neck, wither and shoulders are accentuated. There is a slight fat cover over the ribs but they remain easy to see. The vertebrae of the backbone are easily discernable and the tailhead is prominent but the bone structure of the tailhead is not obvious

SCORE 4 — MODERATELY THIN - The neck, wither and shoulders are not obviously thin. A faint outline of the ribs is visible, the backbone projects upward slightly and some fat can be felt around the tailhead.

The prominence of the tailhead will depend on the horse’s conformation.

SCORE 5 — MODERATE - The neck and shoulders blend smoothly into the body and the withers are rounded. The ribs cannot be seen but are easily felt, the area over the loin is flat and the fat deposited around the tailhead begins to feel spongy..

SCORE 6 — MODERATELY FLESHY Fat is beginning to be deposited along the neck and withers and behind the shoulder.

The ribs can still be felt but the fat cover over the ribs feels spongy. There may be a slight crease or gutter down the back and the fat around the tailhead feels soft.

SCORE 7 — FLESHY - Fat is deposited along the neck, wither and behind the shoulder. Individual ribs can still be felt but there is a noticeable filling of fat between the ribs. There may be a crease or gutter down the back over the loin area and the fat around the tailhead will be soft.

SCORE 8 — FAT - The neck is noticeably thickened with fat, the area along the wither is filled with fat and the area behind the shoulder is flush with the body. It is difficult to feel the ribs, there will likely be a gutter down the horses back and the fat around the tailhead will feel very soft.

SCORE 9 — EXTREMELY FAT - The neck, wither and the area behind the shoulders are bulging with fat. Patchy fat can be seen over the ribs, there is an obvious gutter down the centre of the back and the area around the tailhead bulges with fat.

What condition score should your horse be Depending on what your horse is doing, its optimum condition score will be somewhere between a score of 4 and 7.

The table adjacent gives you an indication of the best condition score for your horse.

If your horse has a lower condition score than it should, you need to feed more. If your horse has a higher condition score than it should have, you need to feed less.

The interpretation is often very poorly understood, the actual technique used incorrectly done and very certainly the results have been responsible for an inordinate amount of waste, anxiety, and loss in the industry, possibly more than any other procedure.

What is a "Flexion test"?

Simply put, it the outcome expressed by an individual when a limb or joint is held in "flexion" for a period of time.

Unfortunately, that definition is exactly what a flexion test is.

Nowhere is it specified just what is meant by "flexion" of a joint, how it should be done, and for just what "period of time".

These variables are subject to individual interpretation and application by each individual practitioner.

There is no "Standard Flexion Test" and this is where most of the problems arise.

At this point, I would be bold enough to state that I do not believe there are very many horses that I could not elicit a "positive" flexion test from if I so wished.

What possible use is that and how can any result be applied across the board?

The outcome of a flexion test can be manipulated by the operator, depending on how it is done.

Each person is going to carry out the test in a slightly different fashion and so what is the use.

I have been working as a veterinarian in the horse industry for the best part of 50 years, (49 to be exact) and could not possibly have enjoyed my time more.

In particular, it is the culture of the people associated with horses that is the most satisfying, be it racing or pleasure horse.

The horse is a remarkable animal that fortunately is very "uncomplicated" in what it takes for it to survive and function effectively, but that said, they are extremely powerful creatures born to roam and graze in the wild, not be enclosed in small yards and enclosures and have humans of varying weights, skills, and ability flop around on their backs asking them to perform un-natural manoeuvres that they really do not understand.

Because of this, the most fascinating think about the industry is the plethora of myths, folklore, old wives tales, customs, and habits that abound in the industry.

dors hate it when a prospective purchaser requests a pre purchase examination as so many, otherwise perfectly functional and useful animals are "failed" because of flexion test outcomes.

Examination of an animal before a sale is essential so that the purchaser can get some expert opinion about the goods they are purchasing as once you take possession of an animal, and find it is not suitable for what you are after, it becomes a real issue.

The critical message here is that prospective purchasers must very carefully select the person they are going to engage to examine and assess the prospect.

It is absolutely essential that the person be very experienced at examinations, (and flexion tests obviously), but that person must also spend a lot of time in discussion with the purchaser establishing just exactly what sort of horse the purchaser really requires.

Many horses that may have some negative flexion outcomes, can still be eminently suitable for the requirements.

So, what exactly is a flexion test?

At my age, I have bad knees.

Any time I drive a reasonable distance in a car, when I try to get out of the car, I find I can hardly stand up.

This is a very positive flexion test.

Why then am I so lame?

It is because, in particular, that the soft tissue structures around the joint are stiff, fibrosed, and have lost their natural elasticity and flexibility.

Granted my knees certainly have a lot of bone damage, but still, once I have straightened up, I am perfectly capable of relatively normal ambulation and walking, despite a "failed" flexion" test.

This is rather an extreme example, and there is no way I could possibly be assessed, (or "passed"), as being suitable for athletic function, but it serves to illustrate a point.

Many horses also have "stiff" or less flexible joint capsules, but have absolutely no clinical signs of arthritis and this is what should be taken into account as part of the assessment of the horse and the result of the flexion test.

Consider the many elements of a flexion test  From page 16 (1) Initial clinical examination.

This is a critical part of the assessment.

Obviously examining each joint for swelling, enlargement or effusion, and what happens with passive flexion, ie flexing the joint at rest as examining looking for range of flexion and any pain reaction. I call this passive flexion.

(2) Initial lameness examination - I feel this is probably the most important part of the examination. If there is absolutely no lameness present when the horse is examined in motion, then any so called "positive" flexion test result must be viewed very critically as to its significance (3) The flexion test itself - I feel there are three important elements Firstly, how hard do we flex the joint?

This is very important, and as I said earlier, I believe I can make almost any horse lame after flexion if I want to. The correct degree of flexion is to just flex the joint maximally, but with minimal force so that the joint is just held snug, not with any undue pressure.

Secondly, how long to hold in flexion?

This is variable as obviously the longer flexion is maintained, the more likely there to be some reaction.

It is very important to do each test the same so an operator is measuring results against the same criteria each time.

Thirdly, interpretation of what happens when we trot the horse off.

Is it lame at all? Is it lame for just a few steps

Lunging to help determine the degree of lameness found in flexion testing.

and then not lame? Does the horse remain lame for some time, (several laps at the lunge)?

These interpretations are very important and for me, I only regard it as positive if the horse remains lame for some considerable time, particularly in the front legs.

(4) A very important fourth element is to be sure we are applying flexion only to a specific joint. In the front, the coffin joint and fetlock joint must be done individually.

Knees rarely give a positive but if they do, it is probably significant.

In the hind legs, the hock and stifle have to be done together because of the reciprocal apparatus.

Interestingly, in the old days, flexion tests behind were referred to as "spavin" tests implying the hock.

This is really fallacious as the hock has four separate joints.

Bone spavin only usually occurs in the bottom two joints which have almost no range of flexion and so the test does not relate.

In the hind leg, it is very important, and a little difficult to avoid applying a lot of pressure to the fetlock and coffin joint as the horse tends to lean heavily on the operator and so care must be taken.

So to date, I have probably been quite negative about flexion tests as I believe far too many horses are rejected as a result of what I consider incorrect technique or interpretation. I still perform the tests all the time, and consider them to be very valuable in the assessment of the horse.

Obviously in an arthritic joint, positive flexions can help localise the problem.

I still consider the information useful even in the joint that has no pathology as I believe it gives some indication as to the flexibility of the joint, and the horse as a whole.

The standard I apply here is that if the required future for the horse is to progress through to the highest levels, then joint flexibility should be critical, but the reality is that very, very, few horses are going to go that far, and many of those with some reduced flexibility can still be quality performers and to fail a horse just on this outcome seems extreme to me.

There are so many other variables applying to the eventual suitability of an animal for the purchaser that to fail an animal just on this parameter seems ridiculous.

Tenterfield and New England Region The New England region of New South Wales is an area of contrasts; from gorges and rushing rivers in the mountainous country to the east to the fertile agricultural plains of the west; from the heat of the summer sun to the chill of a winter's day on the top of the ranges; from the area's rich Aboriginal history to its murky past as the haunt of bushrangers.

It is a fossicker's paradise, with many precious and semi-precious stones found in the vicinity. There is excellent fishing in the dams, rivers and streams of the area and some of the state's most renowned National Parks and World Heritage areas lie within the New England region.

The region is renowned horse country, no worries from Qld Itch, ticks, bats and no more Bighead, greasy heel or mud fever which is common in coastal regions.

Horses do very well in the temperate climate and they and their humans can enjoy the four seasons.

Ten things to do in 10 minutes or less

Time is such an issue for so many of us with horses. Often we are looking after our horses 'in between' jobs - on the way to work, on the way home, dropping kids here and there.

I have often said that 10 minutes a day makes a difference, and I often get asked what can be done in 10 minutes. So here is a list of 10 things, that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will improve your relationship with your horse, improve your horses flexibility, strength or confidence. Ten minutes a day can also improve your knowledge and skills.

1. Improve on your ground exercises. In my TKH curriculum there is 10 exercises. You could choose to focus on just 1 of these for an entire week to improve the quality and response time - building to a 'world champion level lateral bend' for example.

2. Grooming time. Spending time simply grooming your horse will improve your bond. Instead of grooming while he is eating, take the time to tie him up, so you both can fully be present in the experience. Doing this each day for a week will improve your bond, and will also improve your horses respect and patience.

3. Online walking. Don't underestimate the benefits of taking your horse for a walk around the paddock, or the local area.

4. Patience. Teaching your horse patience by simply tying him up (safely tying, and only if he has been taught to tie up) for a few minutes a day.

5. Picking up his feet, and cleaning them out. Not only will this bring to your attention any hoof issues he may have, and help in the general care of your horse, the act of picking up each

foot and holding it, is a respect exercise within itself.

6. Spend time with him. Simply sitting the paddock or arena, with him loose allows you to spend time together with no agenda.

Focus on your breathing, and just take the time to relax.

7. Liberty time. Having some fun at liberty, or doing some training exercises adds some cross training to your routine.

8. Observe. Spending time observing your horse in the paddock, or within the herd, without interference from you, can give you a greater understanding of your horse and how he reacts to stimulus and body language.

9. Stretching. Going through a set of stretching exercises with your horse, when done correctly will improve his flexibility, and in turn, his strength.

10. Exploration. Horses love to investigate new areas! If the option is available to you - turn him loose in an area that he doesn't usually get to go in and help him explore - walk around and see the space through his eyes, when the 10 minutes is up, he gets put back in his 'usual' paddock. This 10 minutes of stimulus can go a long way to your horses mental well being.

As I mentioned at the start of the article, the ground exercises are 10 individual exercises, each one that can be done multiple ways, and with multiple variations.

So you should have 30 or 40 things you can do with your horse in 10 minutes or less, if you are familiar with my curriculum.

If you did each one of these each day for a full week, you would have 30 - 40 weeks worth of content - and that’s not even with riding!

Hope this gives you some ideas on how to still be 'doing' things with your horse, when you have less than 10 minutes.

Boy’s accident highlights need for safety Irons When little eight-year-old Joey Donald was injured in a horrific horse riding accident, his future looked bleak.

His horse had dragged him along the ground for 300 metres and his family was distraught fearing they might lose him.

Doctors said he might never breathe on his own again.

He suffered multiple skull fractures, a brain injury, a collapsed lung, a torn liver, a broken nose and elbow, and third-degree abrasions to his back.

Fortunately Joey proved to be a fighter and is on the long, slow road to recovery thanks to the support of his family and the local community.

Imbil gears up to host 2019 Tom Quilty In July this year, Australia's most prestigious endurance horse riding event will come to Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex, expecting to bring over 2,000 visitors to the Imbil area and provide a significant economic benefit for the region.

Over 350 riders and their support crews will converge on Imbil with many expected to stay for five to seven days to best position their horses to complete the challenging 160km ride through the Imbil State Forest.

The economic impact for the region is expected to be close to $2 million based on conservative estimates which do not include the substantial funds being injected into the local economy by event host, Stirling's Crossing Equestrian Complex.

Complex owner and founder of Stirling's Crossing Endurance Club Matthew Sample said he was delighted to be hosting an event that would have such a positive impact for local businesses.

"We want to put Imbil on the map as a premier equestrian hub in Australia - particularly for endurance riding and we don't underestimate the opportunity this provides for local businesses too," Mr Sample said.

"We love this region and want to support those within our community who can help us make our visitors feel welcome and experience the beauty and hospitality of the Mary Valley for themselves.

"This event is steeped in history and recognised internationally by the endurance community.

“Initial indications are that this will be one of the biggest Tom Quilty Gold Cup rides in its 54year history with riders coming from as far as Tasmania and Western Australia, as well as from overseas.

"Those involved in endurance riding are very passionate about their sport and this event is definitely the highlight of the endurance calendar annually.

“Having the opportunity to host it at Stirling's Crossing which is Australia's first purpose-built endurance facility and being located in such a desirable tourist destination is proving to be a winning combination and we've been overwhelmed with enquiries even though we are still a few months out."

The event will be hosted between 11-14 July with the ride commencing at midnight on Friday, 12 July, riding into Saturday.

Riders participating will be aged between 12 and 70 and have 24 hours to complete the course, returning to the ride base several times during the event for vet checks and to replenish their horses.

By EQUESTRIAN QUEENSLAND Congratulations to Waterford Equestrian and Pony Club (WEPC) on rebuilding their grounds after flooding and successfully holding their first EA Eventing competition on 30-31 March, 2019.

Equestrian Queensland is proud to have been able to provide WEPC with funding through Program 1 to support development and growth in Eventing It’s not often eventers in Queensland see a new course open in South East Queensland and Waterford's recent event was well-supported by the eventing community with fantastic feedback on social media from riders "It was a terrific event from start to finish", "Fantastic event! There are two full days of horse events in the main ring. Pavilion, dairy, beef and poultry displays as well as the popular small farmers tent and Flavours of the Farm trade areas. Plenty of free family fun and entertainment to keep everyone entertained.

This year there will be the famous Noah's Racing Pigs attending the show, as well as Australia's Living History and It's Rocket Science.

2019 GLADSTONE SHOW The Gladstone Show horse section for 2019 has been expanded to a two day event to be held on Saturday 15th and Sunday, 16th June.

BOONAH SHOW 2019 "Showcasing our Farmers" is the theme for the 2019 Boonah Show which will be held on Friday, 31st May & Saturday, 1st June. Farmers, who play such a vital role in the community, are going through very tough times at present, battling extreme weather conditions, and an uncertain market for their produce. This year’s show may well be short on displays of their produce and cattle, owing to the drought, however, but what better way to say thank you to the farmers than by gathering around them at the show, appreciate the displays they have been able to bring together despite the conditions, give them encouragement and show appreciation for all they do. Shows serve a vital role of bringing a community together, and Boonah is very good at doing this, and at the same time, extending a warm welcome to visitors.

Boonah Show has fully embraced the digital age this year. Exhibitors can now enter exhibits on line via Showday on Line - just Google Boonah Show. However, for those who still like to do things manually, show schedules are available in hard copy, and competitors can still place entries either at the office, by mail, fax or email, and buy an entry ticket at the gate as usual!

Centre ring at 12.30pm on Saturday will feature a Parade of Champions for Horses followed by the judging of the supreme trophies. Another feature in the horse arena will be the judging of the T1Y Champion of Champions Hack Series.

This year's' Boonah Show will be a full two days and nights show with performance by 200 local kids in The Big Boonah Rumble, the Crackup Sisters, harness racing, historic speed cars, vintage tractors, vehicles and machinery displays, woodchopping and chainsaw races, Noah's Farm Pig Races, great fireworks display , Aussie FMX Kaos, with their breathtaking motorbike stunts, and the ever popular demolition derby will close the Show on Saturday Night. However, the bar and music continues until midnight.

Lifeskills program " HHH received its 3rd business award in Feb this year for " Youth and Family Services " It has been wonderful to see the program grow across different states and receive the great feedback from Youth services in relation to disengaged young people reengaging back into school or study.

The program covers communication skills, body language, emotional regulation and personality education all being taught through professional horsemanship groundskills in small groups , not unlike mini horsemanship clinics!

It is not Equine Therapy, it is a Lifeskills program to help prepare young people transition to a positive future. All students attend with their own case worker or counsellor, it is designed to open doors of communication for all those involved with the young people attending. Workbooks are provided to case workers so they can reinforce the techniques taught through the courses.

Licensees all receive extensive training with Sue Spence and must have a high level of natural horsemanship ground skills, excellent communication skills and ideal facilities to present the program for their local communities.

Media launches with each opening are also provided with many Youth Services booking as soon a new center opens.

Licensees become an important well respected role model in their communities liaising with all youth and family services.

The opportunity to present the program at a corporate level is also available.

Rebel has been a total pleasure to own he has been part of our family for five years. As you can see he is really beautiful and made for the show ring however Dressage is our interest so that’s where his career has predominantly focused.

He is competing successfully at Novice always placing and scoring in the 65% range to many placings to list. He represented WA at the 2018 National Interschool’s in Dressage and Showhorse we drove him over to Victoria and he travelled beautifully finishing top 10 in both his dressage tests. Rebel is also part of the EWA 2019 rising stars team.

We also attend pony club and loves to jump he has competed in a couple of ODE’s as well he really is a great allrounder.

Although well-educated I wouldn’t class him as a beginners pony he is extremely safe however but would be best suited to a competent confident child going on to a 2nd pony.
